A TESTIMONY FROM LOUIS: In October 2010, I was diagnosed with stage IIIB squamous cell lung cancer. It was a big, aggressively growing tumour. OFFICIAL COMMENT: PARK & CANAL Feedback received from Ekurhuleni Municipality in connection with the David Wolff park and Canal. After the report, published in September 10, 2013 issue on page 3 and 4, we received the following feedback from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Communications and Brand Management Department. PARKS The department wishes to state that this is not a park but a yard that has been used by Ekurhuleni Metro Police for training. Parks is therefore not responsible for maintenance of the facility; however the department will liaise with EMPD in order to f ind a solution for the place including the removal of the homeless. CANAL Our team went out to check if there were any blockages alongside the area mentioned below and no blockages were found.
Identified body found at Sparwater dam near Duduza. The naked body of Gilbert Madoda Magola age 34 was found floating in Sparwater dam by an unknown passerby on Sunday September 15, 2013. The cause of death is due to multiple stabbing wounds. A murder case has been opened and the Duduza SAP are investigating the matter. The time of death is uncertain at the time being, pending on the postmortem. No suspects have been apprehended as of yet. Social labour plan Sasol Mining handed over the Fencing of Reservoirs in Greylingstad and Nthoroane project to Dipaleseng Local Municipality. The f irst phase of the agreement that is in place between Dipaleseng Local Municipality and Sasol has been completed. Delegates from Sasol was warmly welcomed by the Executive Mayor of the local Municipality, Cllrs NS Nhlapo and MMC for Local Economic Development, Cllr MD Khanye on September 5. Sasol committed a total of R25,5 million for the period 2012- 2015, with an amount of R500 000 already spent on the Reservoir Fencing projects. Concrete palisade fencing was put up in Nthoroane and Greylingstad, while tangle tape fencing was installed at the reservoir in Willemsdal, in Greylingstad. This project started in 2012 and was completed in March 2013 and created nine local jobs. The Executive Mayor extended her gratitude to Sasol. The second phase is the construction of roads in Nthoroane. A total of R10 million is set aside for this phase. This project is due for completion in 2015.

Matthew 21:12 Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out all the people buying and selling animals for sacrifice. He knocked over the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those selling doves. 13He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be called a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves!” (NLT) In Matthew 21:12 – 17 Jesus sets the standard with regards to what God expects of His children. When Jesus walks into the temple, He finds that instead of it being a place where people spend time with God in prayer and worship, the temple became a place of commerce and cheating. Jesus responds to this by immediately getting rid of everything that does not belong in the house of God. Amazingly, this sets the stage for the manifest presence of God and praise. In today’s time, we know that God does not dwell in buildings anymore but finds His home in His children (1 Corinthians 6:19). Since we are the temples of the Holy Spirit, the things Jesus said about the physical temple also apply to us. God desires of us as individuals and also corporately as the body of Christ, to be people of prayer. In order for this to happen, we need to make sure that we are devoid of everything that could defile or distract from this goal and turn us into ‘a den of thieves’. The moment we become consumed with things such as ‘the deceitfulness of riches’, the ‘cares of the world’, survival or business, our focus shifts from God and prayer to ourselves and the things we whish to accomplish (Matthew 13:18-23). When this happens, prayer and time with God take a second place in our lives and we, as a
result, become our own god. Not praying is living in a space where we arrogantly state that we think we can operate independently from God and work out our own salvation. The fact of the matter is however that we cannot survive without God. We cannot afford not to have time for God. As clearly seen in the history of Israel, abandoning God in pursuit of other things, sets us up for failure every time. In order to become people of prayer, we need to get rid of everything that stands between God as our priority and us. When God becomes the center of our lives, every other thing falls into place. Becoming a house of purity precedes becoming a house of prayer. The antidote to a prayerless life, is true repentance (Psalm 66:16-20; 2 Chronicles 7:14). God always responds to a conscious decision to turn away from sin and turn to Him with forgiveness and healing. Once we walk in purity and prayer, the manifest power of God becomes evident in our lives. A nation, a culture and a city can be changed when God’s children access the supernatural through selfless prayer. Jesus prayed for others consistently. As we put the Kingdom of God f irst, also in our prayers, all our personal needs are also met by God (Matthew 6:33). People of prayer will also be people of power. This in turn, sets a continual stream of praise in motion. When we see the hand of God move and work in the lives of people, it is impossible to remain ungrateful and negative. Prayer makes us aware of our utter and complete dependence on God. People that pray understand that every success, every victory and accomplishment is

“Two” – Step poisoning Dog poisoning is becoming a tragic scene in Nigel and animals are losing their life’s and loved ones a pet. It can happen to your family and will you know what to do, when it strikes you? The last couple of weeks, Nigel have been hit with a wave of dog poisoning from Ferryvale to Noycedale. It is assumed that the culprits are after vehicle mags. The incidents take place around 03:00 in the morning. The poisoning of dogs leads to further crimes such as burglary, robbery, rape etc. On the streets they call it “two-step” – a poison so deadly that animals that consume it manage no more than two paces before falling down dead. It is the black-market version of Bayer CropScience’s pesticide aldicarb, which was intended for use by farmers in the control of worms and aphids. The availability of the dark grey or bluish granules sold on the black-market is widely spread. They come in little packets or straws and are sold on the street markets and spaza shops. This poison is deadlier that an AK-47, an amount the size of the head of a matchstick will kill a full-grown man in 20 minutes say Jan Van Niekerk of the City of Johannesburg’s environmental health department. All poisons are presented to dogs with food. Common presentations include polonies, meat, fish, maize meal, sausages or bread. The food will be rolled in or stuffed with the poison. If your dog has consumed two-step, these are the signs and symptoms to look out for: disorientation, confusion, excessive salivation, coughing up slime, hyperventilation, weakness, convulsions, seizures, diarrhea (may be mucous, may be black), temporary or partial paralysis, partial loss of movement.
If your dog is showing the above signs, contact your vet immediately to get the proper treatment as soon as possible. You can give your dog some milk to drink or activated charcoal (available at pharmacies). Prepare yourself for the worst. If your dog recovers, you can count yourself and your dog lucky. Even if your response time was excellent, there is no guarantee that your dog will survive. You need to report the poisoning to the police and if your dog did not make it, inform the local SPCA to make arrangements for the disposal of the pet. They will either come and collect the pet or might request you to bring it in a plastic bag. Please do not bury your pet in the yard or a nearby field. The poison is highly toxic. You need to clean up. This will be one of the most difficult tasks you’ll ever have to undertake. Not only is it a messy job, it is an emotional one as well. Here is what you need to do: Protect yourself from the poison, remember the poison can be ingested, inhaled and absorbed through the skin. Restrict access to all contaminated areas and collect all remaining poison from the place where the dog was poisoned. Seal it in plastic containers. Take dishwashing liquid soap squeeze it on all the contaminated places and water down the area very well. For precaution measures on grass, cut it with the lawnmower as well. The use of dishwashing liquid neutralizes the poison. Wash yourself properly with soapy water and change your clothes. Let’s protect our animals from this cruel treatment. If your dog barks excessively during the night, go and see what the problem is. Your pet is part of your family.

Rail sleepers thief nabbed After a tip-off, police arrested a male suspect for the possession of stolen goods. Police received information from the farming community about a suspicious white Isuzu bakkie carrying railway sleepers traveling along Poortjie Road. Quick response by Const. Molehen Malahle and stud/Const. Florence Moekoa led to a pursuit. The police manage to stop the bakkie and found 57 railway sleepers with an estimated value of R5 000 on the back. Two suspect fled the scene into nearby bushes and one suspect was caught. The suspect was questioned and his explanation on why he had the sleepers in his possession was unsatisfactory. The arrested suspect will appear before Heidelberg magistrate court.

Media freedom not guranteed Critical Period for fires Media freedom in South Africa is under increasing pressure to yield this constitutional right to special interests of those few who wield power. Freedom of expression is under attack at community level. The Freedom of Expression Institute is shocked by the recent flagrant arson attack on Karabo FM, a community radio station in Sasolburg. This tragic incident is yet another reminder that, almost 20 years into democracy, the right to freedom of expression and specifically media freedom still needs to be protected and advanced. It is reported that armed masked arsonists stormed into the studios of Karabo FM, ordered out per-sonnel from the sta-tion before dousing the studio with pe-trol and then setting the place alight. For-tunately, there was no loss of life but according to the sta-tion manager; the station has been
completely destroy-ed. The importance of community radio stations cannot be over emphasized particularly given that they remain one of the vital sources of local news and information. At this point in South Africa’s democracy, the importance of this role is further heightened as the country draws closer to elections in 2014. Freedom of expression is a facilitative right, upon which all other civil and political rights are based, and increasingly, social and economic rights. If this trend towards the narrowing of spaces available for civic engagement continues, the vital component necessary for sustainable democracy in South Africa would be compromised. The Freedom of Expression Institute will be following this story closely and have offered any needed assistance to the Karabo FM team.
A deep concern rises with the manner in which people start fires in this critical period. Working on f ire (WOF), Gauteng’s general manager Avhasei Maswime is deeply concerned about veld and forest fires. The WOF team has been hard at work since the official commencement of the fire season which is between August 1, to October 31 every year. They urge people not to start fires during fire season as this season is completely a no smoke period as per the National Veld
and Forest Fire act. Land owners are advised to create fire belts and to have the capacity to be able to prevent and fight veld fire. The National Veld and Forest Fire Act recognizes this need. They promote that all land owners, where there is a high and fairly uniform risk of veld f ires, organize themselves into a forum which can become a registered Fire Protection. There was a need to prevent veld and forest fires. In August month alone, WOF teams fought 91 veld and forest f ires across Gauteng Province.

Dream Riders Dream Riders raised over R1 million for Reach For a Dream Foundation. The Dream Riders are a team of passionate and dedicated cyclists who participate in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge to raise funds for the Reach For A Dream Foundation. November 2012 was the 6th year of the Dream riders and proved to be a landmark year for this fundraiser. The team consisted of 488 cyclists from all over the country and they rode in the 40 km Mountain Bike and Road races. During this course they raised over R1 Million for children fighting life threatening illnesses. Reach for a Dream’s Projects and marketing manager Bronwyn Feldwick-Davis said that the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge is one of their biggest fundraising events of the year and enables them to distribute the funds to all of their seven branches. Nedbank sponsored all the hospitality and rider kits, allowing all the money raised by the cyclist to go directly to dreams and projects, without any expenses. Terrence Chowles, a Dream Rider from the East-Rand region is also taking part in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge taking place in North Johannesburg. This is his fourth year competing and he has signed up for both the 55km mountain race and 94,7 km road race. The training involved, is a total lifestyle transformation and he is not looking back, Terrence said. Training time is roughly 6 to 7 hours a week for him and he is certain that he can complete both races. Asking Terrence why he was competing , he answered that he is cycling to make a difference in someone else’s life and to actively

contribute to the cause that helps children reach their dreams. Terrence is a Project manager in the IT industry and resides in Meyersdal, Alberton.
