Hulle is daarna ook gehospitaliseer. 31 Leerders is direk na Suikerbosrand Kliniek geneem en die plaaslike dokter, dr. Lindeque, het 16 leerders behandel waar van 4 na Suikerbosrand Kliniek oorgeplaas is. Die leerders is behandel vir snywonde, beenbreuke en ernstige wonde. Daar is slegs een leerder, Wikus Bodenstein, op die toneel oorlede. Huidig is 11 leerders en mnr. Stadler, die busbestuurder, nog in die hospitaal. Hulle toestand is stabiel. Die hoof, personeel en leerders se harte gaan uit na die ouers van die leerders wat beseer is en in besonder aan Wikus Bodenstein wat oorlede is, se ouers. Die skool is opreg dankbaar vir die hulp van Kierie Krugel en Michelle Herbst wat eerste op die ongelukstoneel was en baie gehelp het. Lammie Smit van Rotek, Girsh Bonga kragstasiebestuurder van Eskom Grootvlei, Arno Cilliers veiligheidsbestuurder van Eskom, Grootvlei Eqstra; Louw Maritz van M en Z Werke; Dr. Lindeque en personeel; Suikerbosrand Kliniek en personeel; Rev. Well done Suikerbosrand Clinic From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess I received the first call just on 17h00 on Wednesday 22 January 2014. “There has been a school bus accident in Balfour, one child had sadly passed away and many injured. All the injured were being taken through to the Life Suikerbosrand Clinic”. A few minutes later I received another call and the person confirmed that the casualty area of the clinic was “swarming with people”. I immediately told my Pastoral Assistant Maggie and my Youth Pastor Israel to go to the hospital and that I would follow shortly. I contacted my wife Elize and asked her to go and help and I got to the hospital about 5 minutes later. There were also a few other ministers/pastors at the hospital helping where they could. That is enough about us – I am just mentioning this to let the public know that Pastoral help is available when needed – you just have to ask. This is about the staff of Suikerbosrand Clinic and not about us. Let us start by stating some facts. The casualty/hospital is not designed to handle an emergency of this magnitude. The casualty area is too small with not enough seating. I do understand that one cannot build an area that will only be used once every 5 years when there is an emergency like this (I hope it never happens again) but I do wonder if a slightly bigger casualty could actual be benef icial during other times (just an accident involving two cars would draw too many people for the casualty area). My second comment is that an emergency plan of action needs to be in place for incidents like this. I am NOT talking about the staff of the hospital – I am talking about helping to manage the people. I have mentioned this before in letters to the newspaper when the Old People’s home in Springs burnt down and it has obviously fallen on deaf ears. This is a plan that could actually be implemented by the hospital (combined with the AG Visser Public Hospital) where a task team (not the hospital) could be ready to help in

emergencies. But one fact that I would like to mention and emphasize is this. The entire staff of the Suikerbosrand Clinicdid a FANTASTIC job. Yes there was chaos with all the people and all the injured children but there was still some sort of order. Where tempers could have flown there was peace and calm with everyone (doctors, sisters, nursing staff, helpers and administrative staff) all focusing on the problem (the injured) and not on the awkwardness of trying to work in a confined place with too many people. It was amazing and pleasant to see how the doctors and staff understood the panic of the parents and friends and took time to answer so many questions. It was a blessing to me and my staff to be able to ask questions on behalf of concerned parents and friends and to get answers given to us instead of being brushed aside without the necessary answer needed to help pastorally in trying to comfort those traumatized. What a blessing to see that there was never a question of “who will be paying” – this was arranged by the School and the hospital accommodated accordingly. What a blessing and great idea to have the hospital set up a point where the folk could get a free juice. Then came Thursday morning and it was back to the hospital to visit the injured. Again I say thank you to Suikerbosrand Clinic. As I arrived at the hospital I found parents and friends everywhere (obviously getting in the way) but not once did I hear the staff complain. They understood the trauma and accommodated the needs of the people. What a blessing to be asked by some of the Sisters and staff to please speak to some of the patients as they felt that they “needed some help” – yes folk the staff ARE human and the staff DO care beyond their job. Thank you Life Suikerbosrand Clinic, doctors, sisters, nursing staff, helpers and admin staff – YOU DID HEIDELBERG PROUD.

Illegal dogfighting Animal fighting is a contest in which people urge two or more animals to fight for the purpose of human entertainment. In organized dogfighting cases, two dogs are placed into a ring or a pit to fight until one cannot continue or dies. In street fighting cases the level of organization is lacking and may occur in secluded spots, alleys or similar locations. Trainers ruthlessly acquire animals to use as live bait during these f ights. They fraudulently acquire dogs or cats from shelters, websites like Gum-Tree, by steeling them and at “free to a good home”

ads. The bait animals are often attacked and torn apart during training and fights. Most common bait animals that are being used are Fox terriers, Maltese, Jack Russell’s and puppies as well. The dogs that are being used in these fights are bred to f ight. They seldom receive proper veterinary care for their injuries and often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration and exhaustion. Trainers often give mind-altering drugs to the dogs to numb the pain and to perform better. If a dog does not perform to the trainers standard or refuses to f ight they are viciously killed. Animal fighting activities attracts other serious crimes, such as gambling, drug dealings, weapons offenses and money laundering. Children are commonly present at these events. The NSPCA is urging people to come forward with any crimes related against animals. They assure the public that whistleblowers and witnesses will be protected by the NSPCA. Illegal dogfighting case has moved to Nigel Court. On November 4, 2013 eighteen suspects were arrested in connection with a dog fighting syndicate in Tsakane. Two of these suspects where under aged. Four of them received bail. The matter was postponed and moved to the Nigel Regional Court. The NSPCA was pleased with the decision to transfer the case. Upon conviction an individual may then be sentenced to a fine not exceeding R300 000 or a term of imprisonment not exceeding 15 years. The accused suspects appeared in the Nigel

court on Monday, January 20. A warrant of arrest was issued when one suspect did not put in an appearance during the court procedures. There were no legal representation for the 17 accused and the case was postponed until February 3, 2014. Members of CLAW came together at the front of the courthouse in support of crime against animals. They came all over the Gauteng area to show their support and were displaying posters. According to Cora Baily al the dogs rescued at Tsakane had to be humanly euthanized due to injuries received during the fight.

Illicit cigarettes seized Heidelberg Police arrested a 30 year old male Pakistani National for Possession of Illicit cigarettes. On Thursday January 23, members of the SAPS were working on a tip-off of illicit cigarettes. The cigarettes are being sold timeously. When visiting the shop, 15 cartoons of cigarettes were found. The

cigarettes were found displayed on shelves in his shop at cnr. Meyer & Vlok str., Rensburg in Heidelberg. The Suspect was arrested and the cigarettes were seized. A Custom Excise Act case docket was opened as well as possession of illicit cigarettes. The suspect will appear before Heidelberg Magistrate Court.

Dangerous In terms of the new act it is a criminal offence to possess a dangerous weapon with the intention of committing an unlawful act. If the possession of a dangerous weapon raises a reasonable suspicion that the person intends to use the dangerous weapon to commit an unlawful act, the person may be found guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine or to be imprisoned for a period not exceeding three years. The Dangerous Weapons Act has been promulgated to address the possession of weapons during public gatherings and mass demonstrations, officially came into force on January 2, 2014. As of January 2, 2014 it is a criminal offence for a person to possess during a gathering or demonstration, any dangerous weapon, any airgun, firearm, imitation firearm and that is likely to be mistaken for a firearm, any harmful and sharp object or any other object capable of causing death or inflicting serious bodily harm, if it were to be used for an unlawful purpose. Other examples of dangerous weapons includes: knife such as gravity knife, switchblade, sword, dagger, blackjack, brass knuckles, ballistic knife, spear, tomahawk, knobkerrie, crowbar, nunchaku and hammer. The mere possession of a dangerous weapon during a gathering or demonstration constitutes an offence, but possession of dangerous weapons will not necessarily lead to arrest, due to the pursuit of any lawful employment, duty or activity, during participation in any religious or cultural activities, law sport, recreation or entertainment, and for legitimate collection, display or exhibition of weapons. Heidelberg Police opened an armed robbery case docket after Ellerines Furniture shop was robbed of electrical appliances. This incident happened in Heidelberg along Voortrekker street on Wednesday, January 23 about 10:00. It is alleged that the Store Manager and the Staff were in the shop when people entered the shop in groups, as customers. All of a sudden, two suspects went to the Credit Controller who was in her office. She was confronted by an unknown young male suspect who was demanding new cell phones and safe keys. She was forced to open the cupboard when a firearm was pointed at her. The suspects took cell phones. It is alleged that they also went to the other work colleague and she was forced to open the safe. There were six perpetrators and they helped themselves with one Samsung Galaxy S3 mini, two Nokia Asha 201, 84cm Samsung LCD flat screen tv and a microwave. Continued theft and vandalism condemned The Lesedi Local Municipality continues to be plagued by theft and vandalism of electrical transformers and substations which leads to interruption in delivery of services. These acts of criminality are mainly happening in Ratanda and have reached unacceptable levels. In this week alone a transformer and substation have been stolen and vandalized in Ratanda resulting to interruption in electricity supply which leaves residents without electricity for days because this is specialized equipment that is not always readily available in the municipality’s stores. It is also very important to point out that replacing and fixing this equipment is very costly to the municipality. This has a negative effect on municipal finances and other services have to be compromised in order to fund these repairs. Community members also suffer losses amounting to thousands due to their food that get spoiled in their fridges when there are power failures as a result of criminal acts. These criminal activities happen in our communities and there should be people with information that can help put an end to this crime. The municipality is appealing to residents to report these criminals to police so that they can face the full might of the law. This is crime against residents and our people should assist in protection of municipal assets. We need to work together to prevent a standoff between the municipality and residents over something caused by criminals. The municipality has engaged with the South African Police Services (SAPS) and they have committed to working together with the municipality and the community to arrest those responsible. Residents are requested to contact police and report any suspicious or criminal activities:

Repair water leaks South Africa is a water scarce country and the preservation of water is important for local authorities such as the City of Ekurhuleni. In this regard, the municipality has launched a programme to repair water leaks to curb water wastage in several areas. According to the Water Demand Management Analysis, about 43 000 residential areas in Tsakane, Langaville and Geluksdal have high volumes of water wastage. The municipality‘s water Conservation Leak Repair Project is currently underway in these areas and the project is expected to run until January 2016. The repairing work involves conducting leak free tests in each property, f ixing or replacing leaking plumbing items such as toilet cisterns and associated pipework. “This includes refurbishment of underground pipes and yard connections, fixing sink taps, baths, showers, outdoor taps, condition rating of underground pipes, and installation of meters on properties,” metro’s spokesperson Themba Gadebe said. About 27 schools in Tsakane, Langaville and Geluksdal will also have their leaks repaired. Residents must be at ease as the workers will be clearly identif iable by their EPWP orange working suits and some will be wearing reflec-ting vests bearing the Ekurhuleni logo. What this means is that the public must get to know their neigbours. If your dogs bark, switch on your lights and blow your whistle. If you hear anything suspicious outside, switch on your lights and blow your whistle. If you hear your neighbours blow their whistle then you need to call the police an blow your whistle to let your neighbours know help is on the way. Heidelberg Police arrested two male suspects age 26 and 37 three times within six days for two house breakings, theft and possession of suspected stolen properties in Heidelberg. On Saturday, January 18, at about 14:00 suspects were seen jumping over a fence. Three suspects were arrested and appeared before Heidelberg Magistrate Court on Tuesday, January 21. The case was withdrawn. The same day, two of the suspects were traced. They were in possession of suspected stolen properties and were arrested. A case docket was opened at Ratanda Police Station. Police seized a black Wii game machine, foreign currencies, Xbox machine 360 and Afrikaans music CD’s with estimated value of R5 000-00. The suspects

appeared before Heidelberg Magistrate Court on Wednesday. The case was withdrawn again. That same night, these suspects were spotted at Heidelberg Hospital jumping over the fence. Computers were stolen from Roman Catholic Church at Cnr. Begeman and Hospital Street at 01:00. The value of items stolen is estimated at R25 000-00. Heidelberg se eie Protea Plaaslike planteDie Heidelberg Protea wat groei in Heidelin Heidelberg berg omgewing voorkom. bekoor die VLU Rensburg tak. Die VLU dames het op 15 Januarie hul eerste byeenkoms vir die jaar gehou by die Suikerbosrand NG Gemeente te Heidelberg. Na die lang vakansie was die vrouens baie plesierig en het talle staaltjies vertel wat gebeur het tydens die feesseisoen. Die gasspreker vir die dag was plaaslike plantkenner George Fritz. Hy het ‘n skyfie vertoning gehou oor al die vetplante wat in en rondom Heidelberg te sien is. Daar is verskeie spesies gewys en George het kortliks aan die dames verduidelik waar hulle gevind kan word en wat is die kenmerke van elkeen. Een van die spesies wat uitgewys is, was die Heidelberg Protea wat in Heidelberg self voorkom en waarna Suikerbosrand vernoem is. Die dames het heerlik saam gesels en belangstellend vrae gevra. ‘n Mens is nooit te oud om iets te leer nie en dit was ‘n heerlike middag wat afgesluit was met verversings. Volgende vergadering vind plaas op 19 Februarie by die Suikerbosrand NG Gemeente in Heidelberg. Oggend van vermaak Sunf ield Fortuna besoek Nigel VLU tydens eerste vergadering van die jaar. Nigel VLU het die nuwe jaar afgeskop op Donderdag 16 Januarie met ‘n kuiertjie deur lede van Sunfield Fortuna tehuis. Brenda Gouws die bestuurder van die tehuis het die dames meer oor die bestuur en daaglikse gebeurlikhede vertel. Daarna het die lede van die tehuis die VLU vermaak met sang, dans en mimiek. Bejaardes bederf Weldoener maak Nigel Tuiste vir Bejaardes haar Kersprojek vir 2013. Alhoewel Donelle de Vos ‘n inwoner van Bryanston, Johannesburg is, het dit haar nie gekeer om haar te ontferm oor Nigel Tuiste vir Bejaardes nie. Sy het die besonderhede van die tuiste gekry by Theresa Scholtz en eposse verwissel met Mona van Heerden. Donelle was verbaas om uit te vind dat die inwoners van Nigel Tuiste vir Bejaardes nie vir luukshede vra nie, maar net vir die basiese benodighede wat ons almal so vanselfsprekend daagliks in ons eie huise het. Sy het van voor af besef hoe dankbaar sy moet wees vir alles wat sy het en dat sy ‘n geseënde vrou is. Haar dryfveer agter die projek was om

Suikerbos Butchery se ruim vertoonlokaal Plaaslike slaghuis in Heidelberg trek ‘n nuwe baadjie aan. Suikerbos Butchery het sy deure geopen in die vroeë 1980’s en is bestuur as ‘n familie besigheid. Eienaar Carlos Neto het laas jaar besluit dat die slaghuis ‘n nuwe voorkoms nodig het en het ‘n nuwe perseel langs die eertydse slaghuis opgerig. Die rede vir die besluit was om klante wat die winkel kom besoek net die beste diens en kwaliteit produkte te kan bied. Hulle het die deure van die nuwe Suikerbos Butchery oopgemaak op 15 Desember 2013. Stap jy binne die slaghuis, sien jy dadelik die skoon, netjies en moderne voorkoms raak. Oral is vriendelike personeel wat uiters fluks en behulpsaam is, reg om die kliënt te dien. Die bestuurder van die winkel is Josè Ribeiro. Lus vir ‘n vleisie braai? By Suikerbos sal jy al daardie heerlike snitte kry om op die kole te gooi. Soek nie verder nie, hier is hout, houtskool en brikette beskikbaar om daardie vuurtjie te maak. Carlos spog dat sy kaaswors die beste in die omgewing is en dat hulle tot “macon” maak vir die wat nie vark eet nie. Macon is gerookte beesvleis wat in die selfde snit as bacon gesny is. Gemarineerde sosaties en tjoppies, seekosse, verskillende soort speserye, olyf olie en kaas is hier te verkry. Daar is ook vele vleis hampers om van te kies met billike pryse. Vir die rugbygeesdriftiges is daar ook ‘n verskeidenheid biltong en droëwors om aan te kou gedurende spanningsvolle wedstryde. Vir diegene wat dalk besluit om ‘n vleisie op die spit te sit, Suikerbos is beslis die plek om by aan te klop. Hulle verhuur die toerusting en berei ook die vleis vir die kliënt voor. Net so moeilik is dit vir die kleingoed om uit die beskermende omhelsing van mamma en pappa weg te breek. Die skole het begin op Woensdag 15 Januarie en honderde graad 1 leerlinge het aangemeld by hul onderskeie skole in Nigel en Heidelberg. Baie van die kleingoed het ‘n traan of twee gestort en self die ouers moes maar ‘n traantjie weg pik.

Great kick-off Nigel FC starts the year with a friendly match. Nigel FC hosted a match on Saturday, January 18 at Jim Fouchè Park in Nigel at 15:00. The u/21 of Nigel FC and Yorkshire from Johannesburg played a friendly match. Nigel FC played to a 2-2 draw with Yorkshire. The game started like a house on fire. Nigel FC took an early lead with 2-0. Yorkshire absorbed a lot of pressure and due to fitness levels they managed to fight back. The game ended 2-2. Management is quiet happy with the boys performance but still feel a lot needs to be done. Nigel FC has completed their trial and error process, looking at players’

abilities and formations. They are happy with the current resources and think that the team is in great shape for the local playoff at the Boksburg LFA. The team players are looking forward to this challenge that will take place in this coming Easter. Nigel FC’s aim is to promote the game of football in the community, to give the youth reason to stay out of the streets and not to use drugs. Practise is from Tuesday to Thursday between 17:00-19:00. Existing teams consists of u/9, u/15 and u/21 players. All interested players can come to soccer practise at the Mackenzieville soccer stadium situated in Alra Park. No proud soccer grounds Alra Park and Mackenzieville’s soccer fields are a sore eye for the local community and soccer supporters. After complaints received by Yunis Alli, Rekord went to investigate the matter. Alra Park soccer field is situated at the corner of Kreef and Paview road. Right beside the above mentioned f ield the Mackenzieville soccer field is situated. Both these fields are being used by local school children constantly. Local soccer teams and clubs use these fields to practice and play matches. Unfortunately local clubs has to seek other venues to play matches these days and cannot make use of the facilities at Alra Park or Mackenzieville. Matches have to be relocated to Nigel, Jim Fouchè Park at great expenses which is not always affordable. Alra Park, Mackenzieville and Nigel soccer grounds are all Municipality parks. The Alra Park and Mackenzieville fields do not receive the quality upkeep that Jim Fouchè receives, yet they are in more use. The play field at Alra Park is not suitable for practice, nor matches. The ground is uneven and huge holes cover the field on numerous places. Playing on this field can lead to broken ankles and even legs. There a two rugby poles situated on this specific field, both badly damaged and unstable. This can lead to a very tragic accident when bumped into. There are no changing rooms on the premises, the pavilion is rusted and a dangerous and the soccer poles are

damaged. The play field at Mackenzieville looks like a picture out of jungle book. The grass is at knee length and makes the field impossible to use. No soccer poles as well. A match between Nigel FC and Yorkshire was scheduled on Saturday, January 18 at Alra Park but management was forced to move the game to Jim Fouchê because the play field was unplayable and an embarrassment to management. The community is furious and they are demanding answers. Who is responsible for the upkeep of the fields? Why are the fields in ruin? These two parks are used by the local community constantly and not being upgraded while Jim Fouchè’s soccer grounds gets attended regularly even though nobody makes use of it. Why is that so? Can’t the Ekurhuleni Municipality maintain the quality of these two fields as the ones in Nigel? Rekord tried to get hold of various persons in Ekurhuleni municipality to hear their side of the story. Rekord even contacted the media liaison of Ekurhuleni situated in Germiston. Unfortunately most of the contacted persons had no comment or did not want to speak to Rekord. Spokesperson of Nigel Sports grounds commented that the grass at both fields will be cut before Friday, January 24. We did not receive any feedback from Anges Masilo media liaison of Ekurhuleni up till now, but will keep readers posted on all happenings regarding the situation.
