111 years Nigel Methodist Church has the distinction of being the first church to be built in Nigel. The first service ever to be held in Nigel was in the Mine Recreation Hall in 1897. The services were interdenominational and were preached by ministers from neighbouring towns. In 1903 the foundation stone of Nigel Methodist Church was laid at the corner of George Herriot and Oliphaunt Street in Glenverlock by the manager of the Nigel Mine, Alexander Grant. Nigel was little more a mining camp than a town. Building operations commenced on the March 14, 1903, a year after the 2nd Anglo-Boer War ended. Minutes of the Nigel Mason’s Lodge noted that the Methodist community of Nigel were in need of a place of worship. The architect appointed was Gerald Snowdon with E J Butler responsible for building operations. Sandstone was quarried and dressed to size at the quarry (top end of Northern

Road). No hammer or chisel was used on the building site. A few Methodist men, some of whom were Cornish miners, assisted with the building of the church. The pitch pine timbering of the roof was donated by the mine and the rest of the building material was donated by a Heidelberg merchant who also was an officer of the Lodge. The church was consecrated on October 3, 1903 by Rev. Amos Burnett, Chairman of the District, who also conducted the first service. In 1903, this simple and unique little building was given to the Methodist community and it holds the honour of being the oldest church in Nigel. In all, 38 ministers have answered their calling here since the church opened its doors for the f irst time. Elize Goddess has been the minister at the church for over 8 years. Under her guidance the church has developed a strong and compassionate pastoral team. Continue page 6

that a journey takes time and is not instant. Think of a cup of good coffee – slowly brewed as the water passes through the well-chosen mix of coffee beans. Each unique flavour of the beans plays an important part to the end result – a glorious cup of coffee. But if we force the water to pass over the beans too quickly the result is far from the taste that is expected, far from the full potential of the beans. Life is the same – and especially when we want changes to happen in our lives. We take years to reach an age and in that life journey things happen (as a result of our choices) but when we want to undo the wrongs we expect to be able to get rid of them within a few days. So how do we take on our life journey? I believe that we need to look at our life unfolding – trying to make sure that the choices that we make will have a POSITIVE outcome and NOT a negative outcome. Let us face facts, there are many choices we make in our life without taking any time to think of the consequences – positive or negative. When the choice that we make is positive we say we had good luck, when the choice that we made ends in disaster we tend to blame everything except ourselves and expect it to be “made right” super-fast. Well life does not work like that. Here is a thought: The choices we make now will have an effect ON THE REST OF OUR LIVES. If you decide to go out with a girl, the possibility is always that you could end up marrying her. Choose wisely from the beginning – marriage is a life-long commitment. On the other hand if you decide to have an affair be warned that the result of your action will affect everyone involved for the rest of their lives. If you decide to experiment with drugs you should know that you are damaging your body and the possibility is very hi that the damage will be with you for the rest of your life. Looking at the long-term consequence of drugs you will see that not only do you damage your body but you also ruin the lives of all your family and friends. I guess what I am trying to say is please take time to think of and pray about all the decisions you make. The consequences are always long term and the “fixes” are always difficult and take time to try and get right. Rather make sure that the choices you make are correct, are not habit-forming and have a positive effect one you, your family and friends. Life is a blast….just make sure that you make the right choices….

DA requests meeting with Ismail Vadi to discuss e-Tolls ‘rethink’. Reports that Gauteng Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, has called for a second look into e-Tolls, is a significant development in the DA’s fight against (Sanral) gangster gantries. A formal request for a meeting is planned with MEC Vadi to discuss the MEC’s change of heart. The DA will also request that the Transport Portfolio Committee place e-Tolls and Vadi’s proposed alternative on the agenda. Vadi concedes that no alternative funding model was considered, and that there is general dissatisfaction with the funding model. This confirms our calls and suspicions. It is also a refreshing break from the ANC’s tone deaf party line on the issue. The matter needs to be presented to the committee urgently. Prior the elections, it was agreed that the committee should invite parties with alternative views on e-Tolls, particularly organisations such as OUTA, to present them to the committee. With civil society, political parties, unions and now even members of the ANC and government calling for the reconsideration of eTolls, it’s time the state listens and Parliament makes this a priority. e-Toll is a burden on society, particularly the poor, and it cannot continue. Alternatives need to be considered in a rational and logical manner!

Loot recovered Two suspects were apprehended and arrested by an ADT reaction officer. On June 3 Officer Isaac Shongwe was patrolling the streets of Rensburg and noticed two suspicious men carrying a steel object. When he approached in his vehicle, the suspects dropped the loot and fled. With assistance from another security company, one of the suspects was apprehended. He had a large knife in his possession and it was handed over to Heidelberg SAPS upon their arrival. All the stolen steel was recovered. It is not clear where the suspects stole the steel from.

They reach out to the sick and homebound with visitations, providing transport or run errands. The church has an active Ladies Fellowship which meets regularly. They are involved in outreaches. One of their flagship projects is the Newspaper Babies which includes them knitting jerseys, making receiving blankets and making hampers for families in need. The church boasts with an Arts and Craft group which meets on Wednesday afternoons. They make beautiful handworks whilst developing their art skills and techniques.
For the last couple of years a very popular Ladies Breakfast has been hosted at the end of each year. On the June 28, the Annual Church FĂŞte will be hosted and it promises to be a day of family fun with good food and live music. The congregation believe that everybody is equal and all are welcome and accepted at Nigel Methodist Church. Although they are a small congregation it is one full of love and care. Charity Nigel Rotary participated in a fundraising event and donated the prize money to a local rehabilitation centre. The event was held at Carnival Mall. Five teams consisting of 5 members from Rotary clubs hailing from Boksburg, Boksburg Lake, Germiston, Benoni and Nigel participated in a Robert Arnoldi, Nigel Rotary, hands over the cheque to Derick Matthews, FRC. game night. The purpose was to donate the winnings to a local charity organization. Nigel Rotary achieved fifth place during the evening. They received R2500 and chose the Freedom Recovery Centre as their charity. On June 9 members of Nigel Rotary handed the cheque of R2500 over to FRC. The money will be used to aid a project at the centre. Nigel Rotary has been involved at the FRC for the past few years.

Na beraming is ongeveer 82 beeste verskuif oor ‘n distansie van ongeveer 3035 km gedurende daardie spesifieke dag. ‘n Voertuig en 4 veewagters het die vee vergesel sonder die nodige rooi vlae wat verwag word ten tye van voorval. Met sonsondergang was die beeste waaronder kalwers ingesluit is, nog steeds op pad na hul bestemming. Die diere was moeg, getraumatiseerd en dors na die lang dag se reis. Lede van sektor 6 het op die beeste afgekom waar hulle op die nasionale pad in die donker stap. Hulle het dit goed gedink om vir die vee voorlopig skuiling te bied by die ou Vendusie Kraal by Holgateplotte. Volgends ‘n woordvoerder was die vee nie meer in staat om die reis te voltooi nie.
Die DBV en Veediefstal Eenheid is in kennis gestel van die voorval. Die eienaar is aangespreek en in kennis gestel dat die vee nie die verdere 6km sal aflê . Donderdag het Chris Venables van Landelike Noodramp en Hulp Bestuur en ‘n lid van die Veediefstal Eenheid magtiging ontvang om elke dier deur te gaan en seker te maak van eienaarskap. Nigel DBV het ook gedurende die oggend seker gemaak dat die diere in ‘n goeie kondisie is om die reis te voltooi na Langzeekoeigat. Volgens ‘n woordvoerder van die Veediefstal Eenheid is al die vee nie met die selfde brandtoestel gemerk nie. Dit is nie ‘n ongewone verskynsel nie omrede eienaars ‘n grasie periode het van 14 dae na aankoop van vee, om hulle te brandmerk. Indien hulle die vee sou herverkoop voor 14 dae is hulle nie verplig om die beeste te merk nie. Die eienaar is in besit van ‘n verwydering sertifikaat wat hom bemagtig om die vee te verskuif. Die boere gemeenskap word daarop attent gemaak dat vee verskuiwing nie in die nag moet plaasvind nie. Gedurende ‘n verskuiwing moet daar voorsorg getref word vir genoegsame water, weiding en rus tydens die reis.
The country’s largest union is mobilasing support for a national strike in the metal and engineering sector. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa is planning a strike which will effect the metal and engineering industry of the country. It is believed that more than 220 000 Numsa members will participate in the strike which is expected to start on July 1, 2014. “Bargaining negotiations have failed to produce the desired outcomes as expected by the thousands of our members in the sector,” said spokesperson Castro Ngobese in a statement. Numsa’s demands include a 15% pay increase and commitment to a one-year bargaining agreement. “The increase can not be construed as outrageous as it will only improve workers salaries by R450 a month.” The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of SA (Seifsa) said in a statement that the Metal and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) would hold intensive talks in an attempt to resolve the dispute. Seifsa CEO, Kaizer Nyatsumba, said the industry could ill afford a strike. Seifsa, which represents 23 employer associations, said employers offered an inflation-linked increase of 6.1%. The sector’s previous agreement, a three-year deal signed in 2011, expires on June 30.

Anja Jordaan het die dames van Rensburg VLU tou wys gemaak in Kumihimo, ‘n Japanese brei metode. Elke vrou het haar eie stel benodighede, ‘n rond gesnyde karton en vier kleure wol in vier gedeel, ontvang. Hiermee is hul eie skeppings gemaak. Die dames het aan die begin kop gekrap maar ten einde laaste die brei manier baasgeraak. Annemarie du Plessis het ook die VLU se kunstenaar vir die jaar, Laurika Rauch bespreek. Tydens die verrigtinge is daar na twee van haar liedere geluister, “Donker gang” en “Groete aan Mannetjies Roux”. Veilige hawe Heidelberg VLU het hul maandelikse byeenkoms gehou op 12 Junie. Juanita van Zyl van Shalom Faith Ministries het haar getuienis gelewer. Sy vertel dat sy 16 jaar gelede bevestiging ontvang het om na straatkinders om te sien. Haar eerste kind het sy voor haar deur gevind, bloeiend en gehawend. Sy het hom versorg en voedsel gegee. Die Here het vir haar ‘n absolute liefde en empatie gegee om haar roeping uit te leef. Juanita is betrokke by die kinderhuis wat reeds ‘n 1000 kinders deur die jare gehuisves het. Meeste van die kinders wat die kinderhuis verlaat is suksesvol. Die VLU het tydens hul kongres fondse ingesamel en dit aan Shalom Faith Ministries geskenk. Die fondse gaan gebruik word om kinders te beloon wat deur die jaar goed presteer het. Die sentrum is afhanklik van skenkings. Wonderwerke gebeur daagliks in hul midde en hulle eer God daarvoor. Anne-Marie du Plessis het die skryfster Deborah Steinmar aan die lede bekendgestel en ‘n voorlesing gedoen uit haar boek “Wenkbrou”. Francois Furstenburg het op sy beurt gedigte uit “Allegaartjie” voorgelees. Die boek bestaan uit kortverhale en gedigte wat hy saamgestel het vanaf 12 jarige ouderdom. A bright day Firestone brightens Sunfield’s day during a recent visit. On June 9, residents at Sunf ield Fortuna Home received donations of jeans and goodie bags courtesy of Firestone South Africa. General Manager of Sunf ield, Brenda Gouws took Bridgestone PR Manager, Desirée van Niekerk on a tour of the home. She boasted the many facilities that have been included since it was founded in 1991. Sunfield Fortuna aims to empower residents with activities that enhance their strength and foster self-worth, and boasts an array of greenhouses where residents grow their own food. The cellular tree project provides jobs to 22 unemployed women from the community. The therapeutic projects equip residents with life skills and include arts and crafts, dance training, drama and music therapy, computer training and even horse riding. Brenda explained that the home had 11 athletes, including 1 coach and a representative, participating in the Special Olympics in Pietermartizburg in July. They needed help with tough, durable clothing for the residents. Anything helps and they are grateful for this donation from Firestone. Die tweede afdeling vind plaas in September waaronder drama, sang, kuns en instrumentaal is. Vyf honderd leerders het reeds ingeskryf. Dames van die Heidelberg VLU het hierdie jaar die negentiende kongres bygewoon wat die tema “Die Vreugde van Vrouwees” uitgebeeld het. Die kongres het te Meulstroom Lodge, Bronkhorstspruit, gedurende die naweek van 15 Mei plaasgevind. Vyf-en-Vyftig takke van oor die land het afgevaardigdes daarheen gestuur. Die dames van Heidelberg Tak wat die Kongres bygewoon het, was Nelda de Wet (voorsitster), Monica van der Linde, (sekretaresse) Elda du Toit (skakelbeampte), Joanie Geldenhuys en Cornelia Pienaar (voorsitster van die beheerliggaam van Shalom Kinderhuis in Heidelberg). Die Vreugde van Vrouwees is baie raak beskryf deur Mev. Ryna du Plooy. Sy vertel dat vrouens mense met gewoontes is. Elke aand trek ons die gordyne toe en kook kos. Sy het aan hul gedemonstreer hoe om hul eie geskenkboksies uit karton te maak en dit te versier. Daar is ook tydens die aangeleentheid kaartjies gemaak en blomme uit papier geskep. Elke lid het die geleentheid gekry om hulle eie skeppings te maak en het dit terdeë geniet. Ronel Lombaard het die bome van die jaar, Wit Ysterhoud Boom en Laventel Boom, bespreek tydens die verigtinge. Sportsmanship shared Local gym is putting their weight behind CPF. On June 17 the CEO of Body Flo gym, Gerrit Kapp donated a signed rugby ball and 5 free memberships to Nigel CPF. Mr Goolam Patel representing the CPF and commented that in his younger years he was a very fine sportsman. The donated rugby ball is signed by the Valke rugby team 2014 and Jannie de Beer Sprinbok fly half. Mr Patel is planning to auction the ball to gain much needed funds for the CPF. Body Flo has already put in a R500 opening bid for this occasion. The aim behind this donation is to give back to the members who contribute to make the CPF a success. Dit het hom ‘n plek besorg in die finale en waartydens hy ‘n silwer medalje verower het.
