As December approaches motorist will save on petrol. It looks as if motorists planning to drive to holiday destinations will have a little more spending money in their budgets. The AA said that the rand/US dollar exchange rate had gradually strengthened in South Africa’s favour during October and that international petroleum prices had shown a substantial decline over the same period. The association was commenting on the Central Energy Fund’s preliminary
fuel price data, which was showing substantial over-recoveries in the fuel price. “The drop in the petrol price is currently pegged at between 40 cents and 44c per litre, while diesel is showing an almost 56c per litre reduction,” the AA said. “Illuminating paraffin is set at 49c per litre.” “As things stand, motorists will be paying less at the pumps in November and the picture will improve if the exchange rate comes off its current highs.”

In today’s economic climate there are more and more people not taking leave. Many reasons are quoted but I think the prime reason is that there is generally not enough staff in businesses to allow people to take leave. In years gone by if you went on leave you would have someone “stand in” for you and when you got back from leave there was a bit extra work but someone at least did the bulk of your work! In today’s world you come back and your work is basically where you left it and you need to play catch up – nullifying

your leave. So how do we cope with the situation? I have had a number of people coming to see me in the last two weeks and their prime problem is that they are tired and need a break. When I ask if they have time off (eg over a weekend) then the general answer is “yes” but they do not seem rested and seem to get more and more irritated with their work situation, their home life, their spouse, their kids, their family and generally pretty much everything. At this point many folk turn to worldly escape mechanisms and think that they will solve the problem. Alcohol and drugs do not help the problem – just makes it worse because when you go to work on the Monday you find that you struggle even more (because of the after effects of the weekend) and seem to cope even less with the workload and life related issues. So what is the answer? How do you overcome this? I believe that there are three things that you need to do. The first is that you must spend more time with Jesus so that you can gain strength from Him and ask for His guidance in your “tired” state. The second point is that you need to be in the company of people who understand you and help you to relax rather than create more head-aches. These groups in church circles are known as home groups or cell groups. This is an ideal place to “chill” and in the correct environment you can go home relaxed and refreshed, feeling good about yourself and your life.

I honestly believe that while we need rest and “rest” does help I would like to suggest that if you get home, sit on the coach and fall asleep in front of the TV to be woken up to eat supper and then 30 minutes later you are sleeping again to be woken up to go and bath and go to sleep in bed rather than on the couch does not help you at all. Rather make a point of going to sleep earlier (it is better to sleep early than to sleep late) and have a good rest and then when you have a day off do something different – remember the old adage – a change is as good as a holiday. The change (not physically demanding) will help you to be revitalized and seeing the world rather than your lounge is refreshing. Hang in there- the end of the year is nearly here…..

Hulle is vasbeslote om vir Riaan net die beste te gee. Met die hulp van die plaaslike gemeenskap en borge het Riaan se moeder Nicolene die voorreg gehad om gedurende April ‘n kursus in Philadelphia, Amerika by te woon. Dit was ‘n 5 dag kursus en is aangebied by “The Institute For the Achievement of Human Development.” Tydens die kursus het hulle haar toegerus met vaardighede om Riaan se brein te ontwikkel en stimuleer. Sy het ook ‘n leerprogram ontvang wat gemik is op die individuele kind. Dit is ‘n program waar ouers hul kind motiveer deur saam met hom of haar elke oefening prakties daagliks te doen.

Post Office strike Police are investigating at least 167 cases of violence related to the strike at the SA Post Office. Replying to questions in the National Assembly on Wednesday October 29, Telecommunications Minister Siyabonga Cwele said the violence associated with the over two-month-long strike was very worrying. “These cases include instances of malicious damage to property, intimidation and assault,” Cwele said. Cwele would continue engaging the post off ice and union leadership in a bid to ensure employees returned to work. Commando base vandalized The large building which once housed the Nigel Commando base on the NigelHeidelberg Road is now being used for upliftment projects. It has been noted that a lot of activity is taking place at the large fenced building. Rekord asked the Ekurhuleni Municipality for feedback. According to the Senior Media Manager and Spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the property has been fenced by the Ekurhuleni metropolitan Municipality. It is earmarked for poverty alleviation programs like sewing, food garden, etc. People benef iting from this project include residents in the Alra Park,
Mackenzieville, Nigel and Duduza area. During recent years the building was vandalised. The roof has been removed and the rooms inside stripped of all fittings. During an inspection it was found that homeless people occasionaly occupied the building. One resident commented that the building reflects poorly on Nigel as it is situated very close to the Nigel entrance. An ex-commando said that is very unfortunate that the building had been allowed to deteriorate to such a state. Hopefully the building will in future be utilized in such a manner that it will be beneficial to the community.

Street kids It was detected by different stakeholders that there is an escalation of street kids and homeless people around the town of Heidelberg. Stakeholders agreed to conduct a joint operation to offer assistance to those that need social help. Heidelberg and Ratanda SAPS conducted the joint Operation on October 29 with the assistance from the Department of Social Development, Lesedi Traffic, Provincial Traffic, SANCA, Youth Crime Prevention Desk, Department for Community Safety as well as the CPF around Heidelberg Policing area. Five kids aged between 12 to 17 years old were handed over to the Social Workers of the Department of Social
Development for further intervention. Those that are involved in using drugs were handed over to SANCA for placing them into rehabilitation programs. During the operation dangerous weapons as well as house breaking implements such as crowbars, lashers, spanners, pliers, scissors, hammers, knives, hack saw, hand gloves, were seized by the police. Other items such as electrical plugs, rims, tyres, dagga and heroin were also found. One suspect aged 18 years old was arrested for house breaking and possession of dagga. He was caught whilst still in the house. Two suspects were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen property and possession of heroin.

Alberton vehicle pile-up could’ve been avoided The over 45 vehicle pile-up on the N12 in Alberton is a wake-up call that we are in the midst of an ‘epidemic’. I’ve been saying this for years. The world is devastated over the deaths of 3 000 people that died as a result of ebola. This is quite right! There is proportional reaction and emotion from everyone. Yet unbelievably one hardly hears as much as a “peep” about the 14 000 annual deaths on our roads. It is only when a dramatic and graphic crash such as this takes place that people take notice. Until government starts looking at transport holistically, road death statistics will continue to be astronomically high. These statistics started to increase sharply in the 1990’s when business was forced to move their goods from rail to road. Rail had become so inefficient and slow that moving goods on rail was simply no longer an option for business. Increased heavy vehicle transport lead to an escalation of death and fatalities.

Government’s response to this ‘epidemic’ only worsened the problem. Whilst all rail infrastructure previously fell within one government entity. In government’s inf inite non-wisdom, they split rail operations in two: Transnet is responsible for rail transport of goods while PRASA (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) focuses on the transport of people. We now have a situation where two entities have different responsibilities whilst using one set of rail infrastructure. Whilst we have two government entities pulling in opposite directions as officials build their respective empires, we have more and more people dying every day on our roads as more and more trucks occupy our roads nationally. Government should immediately amalgamate all Transnet and PRASA operations. This will ensure holistic and coordinated planning that will contribute to an eff icient, effective and economical service.

New skin deep contraceptive The days of forgetting to take the pill or missing an appointment for the next injection are over. The new sub-dermal implant contraceptive is now available at 88 primary health care facilities across Ekurhuleni. Since the launch of the implant into public health facilities by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi in February this year, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has trained 142 nurses of its nurses to be
competent in inserting the implant without supervision. “Upon completing a short-course, each trainee is required to practically insert f ive implants under supervision at a clinic before becoming accredited. This is to ensure that the staff member is competent and can therefore implant independently,” says Manager for Maternal Health, Childcare and Women’s Health, Dr. Zodwa Mabange said. DEFR AUDED Heidelberg Police arrested a 30 years old male suspect for Fraud and Malicious damage To Property at Game Store, Heidelberg Mall on November 9 at about 12:15. It is alleged that the suspect purchased items from the store using someone else ID book. Items purchased are estimated at R20 400. The police were summoned. Before arrival of the police the suspect was locked in the sickbay. He broke the ceiling boards, porcelain plates, glasses and went into the ceiling intending to escape, but was apprehended by the security staff. The estimated damage is R40 000. Suspect was arrested and will appear before Heidelberg Court.

Deelname aan sport en kultuur stimuleer die kinders en bied geleenthede om hul talente en belangstellings uit te leef. Die erf spog met ruim tuine, ’n swembad en ‘n klim-en- klouter area. Daar is selfs ‘n ontspannings-vertrek waar die kinders kan kuier, televisie kyk, snoeker en tafeltennis speel.

Making every day a world food day In its efforts to alleviate the problem of food shortage in its own backyard, the City of Ekurhuleni has started a Food Bank pilot project at the Springs Fresh Produce Market. October 16 was celebrated as World Food Day. The theme Family Farming: “Feeding the world, caring for the earth”, aims to ensure that the world focuses its attention and recognizes the important contributions that family farmers play in eradicating hunger and promoting food security. The project commenced in September and involves 12 NGO’s who have partnered with the City. They collect fruit and vegetables from the Springs Fresh Produce Market every week. The food is then distributed to households and home-based care shelters catering for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Food
Bank feeds up to 1 500 individuals from Ekurhuleni every week. The beneficiaries are from Benoni, Duduza, Tsakane, KwaThema, Springs, Daveyton and Etwatwa. Some of the NGOs involved are the Nigel Caring Community, Sivukile Community Project, Sekusile Ekhaya Labantwana, Springs Meals on Wheels and the South African Red Cross Society. The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization reported that nearly 870 million of the 7.1 billion people in the world suffered from chronic undernourishment in the period 2010 to 2012. It is for this reason that the City of Ekurhuleni says “no more hunger” by striving to make everyday a World Food Day.

Onderwysbeleid aangepas Wiskunde sal voortaan vir meer leerlinge verpligtend wees. As ’n gr. 10-leerling volgende jaar landbouwetenskappe, rekeningkunde, ekonomie, geografie, lewenswetenskappe of fisiese wetenskappe as keusevak wil neem, is wiskunde nou ’n móét. Angie Motshekga, minister van basiese onderwys, het onlangs op ’n parlementêre vraag van Annette Lovemore, DA-LP en woordvoerder oor onderwys, gereageer en gesê die departement het besluit om die nasionale onderwysbeleid aan te pas. Lovemore wou by Motshekga weet hoe die departement gaan verseker dat alle hoërskole in Suid-Afrika wiskunde as vak aanbied. Leerlinge wat vanjaar in gr. 10 en gr.11 is, sal egter nie volgende jaar deur die beleidsverandering beïnvloed word nie. Dié stap is eintlik meer ’n regstelling as ’n “drastiese ingryping”, het prof. Johann Engelbrecht, uitvoerende direkteur van die SuidAfrikaanse Wiskundestigting, gesê. “Dit was ’n fout dat dit enigsins vir leerlinge moontlik was om byvoorbeeld f isiese wetenskappe saam met wiskundige geletterdheid te neem. Dit maak nie sin om wiskundige geletterdheid te kombineer met vakke wat wiskunde gebruik nie. Wiskunde is ook ’n vereiste vir al dié rigtings op universiteitsvlak,” het hy gesê. Engelbrecht dink ook nie dis buitensporig dat vakke soos landbouwetenskappe, ekonomie en geografie by die beleidsverandering ingesluit word nie. “Ekonomie steun byvoorbeeld deesdae al hoe meer op wiskunde. Die een kan nie meer sonder die ander nie.” Gr. 9-leerlinge, wat hierdie kwartaal hul vakkeuses moet finaliseer en deur dié besluit beïnvloed word, sal aan die einde van 2017 die nasionale seniorsertifikaat-eksamen (NSS) skryf. “Dit kan die uitslae van die eindeksamen in 2017 beïnvloed, maar dan sal die uitslae heel moontlik nader aan die werklikheid wees. “Dit kan ook leerlinge se vakkeuses beïnvloed, maar dis nie noodwendig ’n slegte ding nie. Dis ’n onreg om leerlinge toe te laat om wiskundige geletterdheid saam met vakke soos lewenswetenskappe en fisiese wetenskappe te neem.”

Take care to include brain-boosting food in your diet, such as protein-rich foods which can improve mental alertness. On exam day, steer clear of foods made of white flour, such as muffins, cookies and cakes, as they need added time and energy to digest. For the same reason, avoid eating protein and starch together. In addition, don’t eat foods that are high in refined sugar, such as chocolates, desserts and sweets that will give you uncontrollable sugar highs and lows. Rugby spelers vir 2014 Heidelberg Rugbyblub se spelers word vereer vir hul harde spel gedurende 2014. Hierdie klub is een van die oudste klubs in Suid Afrika en bestaan al sedert 1883. Die klub het hul jaarlikse prysuitdeling op Vrydag, 31 Oktober te Outpost Heidelberg gehou. Die jaar is afgelsuit met ‘n skaapbraai deur Kraai wat koning kraai op die gebied. Vanjaar is Heidelberg as die wenners van liga 3 aangewys. Hulle het 12 wedstryde gespeel, waarvan hul slegs die 1ste wedstryd verloor het. Hierna het hul in die hoër liga meegeding, wat bekend staan as liga 2. Die klub tree as naaswenners uit die stryd, nadat hul teen Klerksdorp op Barnardstadion te Kemptonpark verloor het. Die trotse afrigters van vanjaar se spelers is PJ Engelbrecht en Johan van der Linde. Voorsitter Rian Hamman het die prysuitdeling waargeneem. Roaan Viljoen is as die Sportman van 2014 aangewys. Die Senior speler trofee vir 2014 is aan JR Dijzel toegeken, hy ontvang ook die trofee vir Voorspeler van die jaar. Junior speler vir die jaar is Stefan Deyzel. Lawrence O’Neil is as die Agterspeler van die jaar aangewys. Vir die ligaseisoen 2014 is daar ‘n totaal van 53 drieë gedruk. 18 Drieë is deur die voorspelers aangeteken totaal van 90 punte en die agterspelers het 35 drieë gedruk totale punte van 175. Die voorspelers het vir 2014 276 punte verwerf en die agterspelers ‘n totaal van 90 punte. Rudi Snyder met sy 4 drieë vir die seisoen is die voorspeler wat vanjaar die meeste drieë aangeteken het. Marius Halgryn spog met 3 drieë. Meeste drieë agterspeler 2014 is Neels Pruis met 9 drieë en Louis Killian het 5 drieë behaal. Die speler wat die meeste punte vir hierdie ligaseisoen verwerf is Roaan Viljoen met 60 punte en tweede is Lawrence O’Neil met 57 punte. Ras Steyn is as mees opkomende speler van die jaar aangewys en Lionel Scheepers is die mees toegewyde speler vir 2014. Die hulpvaardige spelers vir vanjaar is Johan Uys, Ruan Classsen, Sharky, Ruan Wheeler en Eugene Stoop. Marius Halgryn is as die kaptein van 2014 aangewys. Nie net die spelers word beloon na so ‘n suksesvolle seisoen nie, aan die afrigters PJ en Johan is die Presidents trofee oorhandig. Soos in elke sport is daar goeie sportman gees en hier is dit geen uitsondering nie. Die houtlepel wat bekend staan as die “has been” trofee is vanjaar deur Kok vir goeie voetwerk en swakenkels verower. Die bestuur van die klub sê dankie aan Chantell vir die trofees en sertif ikate. Die volgende besighede word bedank vir hul borge gedurende die jaar: Nigel Auto City, Auto-Ren Toyota, Piet Coetzer, OutPost. Engin Heidelberg en Mnr G van Heerden.
