This is my story
The best way to convey the truth about drugs is through the words of those who have “been there.” By telling their stories, they can pass on what they have learned so others avoid going down the same path. “My goal in life wasn’t living...it was getting high. I was falling in a downward spiral towards a point of no return. Over the years, I turned to cocaine, marijuana and alcohol under a false belief it would allow me to escape my problems. It just made things worse. I had everything, a good job, money, a loving family, yet I felt so empty inside. As if I had nothing. Over twenty years of using, I kept saying to myself, I’m going to stop permanently after using this last time. It never happened. There were even moments I had thought of giving up on life.” — John. “It started with the weed, then the pills (Ecstasy) and acid, making cocktails of all sorts of drugs, even overdosing to make the
rushes last longer. I took copious amounts of these chemicals every day for as long as two years until I had a bad trip one night and went into toxic psychosis. I prayed and cried for this feeling to go away, I had voices in my head, had the shakes and couldn’t leave home for six months. I became very withdrawn and thought everyone was watching me. I couldn’t walk in public places. Man! I couldn’t even drive. “I ended up homeless and on the streets, living and sleeping in a cardboard box, begging and struggling to find ways to get my next meal. “I asked myself if this is rock bottom, and I believe that it was. While observing these homeless people I decided that I had had enough. Yes I wanted drugs, but I realized that I could want life more.” — Ben. Drug education saves lives. Don’t become a victim.

I was listening to the radio on my way to an appointment and the discussion went around “mind overload”. When they first starting chatting I thought to myself, our minds are never overloaded – I mean we do not use anywhere near all our brain capacity. But as the speaker continued he started sharing about how the internet and the availability of information has created the overload. He suggested that our brain never has enough time to “switch off ”. This started me thinking and I wondered how I was doing in my life. With this in mind I went to sleep and when I woke up the next day I wondered whether a friend of mine had read the message I sent him. When I looked on whatsapp I notice that he had read the message at 0h40. I stopped in my tracks and started looking at my life and the life of many of us. I thought of my previous day. I was up and doing some exercise at 05h30 and then it was work the whole day with very few breaks. I got home after 19h00 and then we had a chat and had something to eat. We watched the recorded X Factor, had a cup of tea and went to bath. Here is the scary thing. We managed to get to bed at 10h45 – and there had been NO time to rest, to relax and switch off from the world, the information (internet) or the TV. Now I know that I often say that it is

No I do not look at TV till the early hours of the morning but YES – my lifestyle is that I do not give my brain enough time to relax and switch off. The speaker on that program said that we needed 15 to 20 minutes of SILENCE with no interruptions, no radio, no TV, to songs – just silence. I think he has a point. But as I thought more and more on this I realized that what he was suggesting was something that Jesus practiced. He often went to be alone and then prayed. Looking at the stress and pressure of Jesus’ life I just wonder if this was not the “secret” to Him being able to cope. So here is my challenge to us all (including me). Create a 15-20 minute period of silence each day. Switch off completely and recharge your brain (sounds crazy but you know what I mean).

Op Maandag, 10 November 2014 laatmiddag het ‘n botsing tussen Nigel en Heidelberg, waar die dubbelpad enkel word, plaasgevind. Voertuie is tot stilstand gebring en verkeer moes drasties spoed verminder. Die vragmotor wat vanaf Nigel na die toneel beweeg het kon nie betyds rem om die ongeluk te vermy nie. Met die uitswaai het die vragmotor omgeslaan en die aarde is besaai met duisende blikkies Coke.
Load reduction National electricity supplier Eskom, is currently in Stage 1 load shedding and has requested the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to reduce the load on its electricity network. Since Friday, the EMM has been undertaking this load reduction exercise by following the load shedding schedules available on the municipality’s website. The municipality has been requested to reduce its load by at least 150MW and will be switching off various areas to meet this requirement. Residents are urged to treat all electrical network points and equipment as electrically alive at all times. The municipality apologies for the inconvenience caused.

Never Again!
Genesis 8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and livestock with him in the boat. He sent a wind to blow across the earth, and the floodwaters began to recede. (NLT) Often when we go through difficult times, we find it hard to believe that God has not forgotten. The Bible, however states numerous times that God does not forget His children, that He in fact remembers us by name… We serve a promise making, promise keeping God of signs and wonders, a God that lives and operates beyond the natural laws and processes that apply to life, a God that can be completely trusted to work out whatever we need in order to bring glory to His name and salvation to our world. The Bible also teaches us that our door into breakthrough is faith. Our sure conviction that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He said He would do sets us up for the provision and intervention of God in our circumstances. The supernatural power of God is available only to those who believe. The kind of faith that can unlock the supernatural comes into our hearts when we hear and receive the Word of God as true and applicable on a deeply personal level. The story of Noah, the only righteous man God could find on the earth before the great flood, provides us with a wonderful analogy of how we should react when confronted with a storm. When Noah and his family went into the ark the rain caused the ark to lift up from the ground and to start floating. All of us go through seasons where we appear to be floating around in the midst of a seemingly endless storm. Just like Noah, we can be certain of this – God does not forget the righteous, those who are in right-standing with Him and with others. With the rain also come new beginnings, a new season where God pours out His goodness and mercy in abundance. God has no desire to see us living under the oppression of poverty. In fact, the prosperity of His children was of such importance to God, that Jesus literally took
the curse of lack and barrenness upon Himself when the crown of thorns was placed on His head. The season of death, as represented by the ravens Noah sent out to find land, is over. As the righteousness of God in Christ, we can depend on it that just like Noah, we will find favour in the eyes of God. When he sent out the dove and welcomed it back with an olive twig in it’s mouth a new season was ushered in. The dove, a symbol of peace, hope and purity carried with it the symbol of God’s anointing, the supernatural ability to change, to remove the heavy burdens and to annihilate the devil. As we step into the anointing, in under the blood of Jesus, we have access to and can live in a place of more than enough. Noah knew this and despite the many, many days at sea, stepped onto land with a heart filled with gratitude. As evidence of the thanksgiving in his heart, he built and altar and immediately sacrificed to God. In response to his gratitude and faith, God made a covenant with Noah, promising that there would never again be a flood like the flood they experienced. If we can believe, the curse can stop with us. Where there is faith, there can be a ‘never-again’ promise. Only when we trust the Lord enough to step out in faith and bring an offering, can we repent from and be delivered of a poverty mentality. Once delivered, we are free to become generous in our giving regardless of our resources. Faithfulness in the little, paves the way to abundance (Matthew 25:14-30). As we step out to faithfully and consistently give, the doors are opened for a more-than-enough harvest. Noah’s sacrif ice preceded his covenant promise. Why don’t you step into your ‘never again’ season today just like Noah did when he built an altar and offered to God (Genesis 8:20)? Trust Him today, to not only deliver you from your storm, but to also stop the curse and release the blessing over you and your generations to come. May you experience the supernatural power of God in operation in your life as you action your faith by becoming a giver!

Een aand verander als! ‘n Tiener meisie vertel dat sy in ‘n gelukkige huis grootgeword het en daar was geen omstandighede wat haar na dwelms gedwing het nie. Op die ouderdom van dertien het sy tydens ‘n partytjie onder groepsdruk geswig. Sy het te veel alkohol gedrink en die gevoel van aanvaarding beleef. Hierdie was ook haar eerste tree na verslawing. Sy vertel vandag dat dit die begin van ‘n reis na selfverwoesting was. Sy het al haar morele waardes oorboord gegooi ter wille van aanvaarding. Tydens die geleentheid het sy by haar vriendin oorgeslaap en kon haar dronkenskap vir haar ouers wegsteek. Sy
sê: “vandag wens ek dat ek by my ouerhuis geslaap het, dan kon my ma die hel uit my geslaan het.” Dalk sou alles dan anders gewees het. Kan ‘n mens se lewe werklik so onherroeplik verander in een aand? Sy vra haarself hoe sy hier beland het? Na jare van dwelmverslawing is sy bevry vanuit haar dwelmhel. Met ‘n pad van fisieke pyn, geweldige armoede en vernedering stry sy daagliks steeds die stryd om te volhard in ‘n nugtere lewenswyse. Wees dus gewaarsku: een verkeerde daad kan jou jou lewe kos. Moenie swig onder groepsdruk nie, kies jou vriende versigtig!

Nigel VLU tak sluit die jaar met ‘n smullekker ontbyt by Tropical Eden se teekamer. Die dames het met warm harte gekuier en vertel van die hoogtepunte van die afgelope jaar, terwyl die reën buite val. Anna-Marie Axer het ‘n gedeelte gelees oor vandag se ouer vrou. Aan elke vrou is ‘n boompie van haar keuse gegee om te teken. Hierdie boompies is meer as net bome en vertel jou meer van elke dame se karakter. Die dames is elk met hul boompies geïdentifiseer. Anna-Marie het aan elke vrou ‘n klein geskenkie oorhandig. Die VLU het besluit om vanjaar ‘n Wildeolyfboom te plant, aangesien die bome van die jaar nie hier in Nigel aard nie. Suzanne het die verrigtinge met ‘n kosbare gedagte afgesluit: “Kosbare vrou, so mooi en kosbaar soos ‘n fyn stukkie

Konsert vir klein Ywanke Jakkie Louw het op Dinsdagaand 18 November 2014 gesorg vir groot vermaak by Laerskool Tini Vorster. ‘n Fondsinsamelingsprojek is geloots vir Ywanke Engelbrecht, wat deur ‘n hond gebyt is. Die funksie is aangebied om by te dra tot die mediese kostes. Ywanke het reeds ‘n veloorplanting ondergaan. Ywanke is ‘n kleuter by Juffrou Natasha De Jager se Wikkelwurms speelgroepie, by Laerskool Tini Vorster. Die funksie is deur Juffrou Natasha georganiseer. Die Laerskool was meer as bereid om betrokke te wees in hierdie projek, hoewel dit nie ‘n skoolaangeleentheid was nie. Natasha se inisiatief en briljante organisering het daartoe bygedra dat die aand ‘n reuse sukses was. Groot dank en waardering gaan aan die gemeenskap vir hul ondersteuning. Intussen sterk Ywanke goed aan. Sy is nog steeds die sprankelende kleuter wat sy was. Gedurende die afgelope jaar was verskeie mense deur honde aangeval terwyl hulle stap of draf. Honde eienaars moet toesien dat hul honde ten alle tye veilig agter slot en grendel is om sodoende die gemeenskap se veiligheid te verseker.

Twee bejaardes bereik die rype ouderdom van 95 en 97 by die Tehuis vir Bejaardes. Oom Pieter Jan Hendrik De Meyer het sy 95 ste verjaarsdag op 12 November gevier! Oom Pieter was tot op die ouderdom van 65 jaar werksaam by Heidelberg Munisipaliteit. Daarna het hy by Nigel Munisipaliteit gewerk tot op die ouderdom van 70 jaar. Oom Pieter wat altyd deftig geklee is in ‘n pak klere vertel met trots dat dit God se genade is dat hy op die ouderdom nog vrylik kan beweeg. Oom Petrus Hendrik Kruger het sy 97ste verjaarsdag op 5 November gevier. Hy is ‘n bekende en hardwerkende inwoner van Nigel. Oom Piet is bekend vir sy bouwerk
in Nigel en beoefen graag houtwerk as ‘n stokperdjie. Oom Piet maak lampies van bosveldhout en is tans besig met ‘n houttafeltjie. Oom Piet het die ontvanger van Inkomste se kantore in Nigel, die Tegniese skool in Rustenburg en ‘n hele aantal huise in Nigel gebou. Oom Piet het as Klerk van Werke te Hartbeespoortdam gewerk tot op die ouderdom van 90jaar. In 1973 was hy ook teenwoordig toe minister Kruger die hoeksteen by die Tehuis gelê het. Oom Piet se dogter is ook baie talentvol en het ‘n pragstuk duvet aan die Tehuis geskenk vir fondsinsameling. Die Tehuis gaan kaartjies verkoop en op 21 Februarie 2015 sal die wenner bekend gemaak word.
Oudste inwoner Tannie Chrissie Gloy is een van Balfour se oudste inwoners. Sy is 90 jaar oud en het nog steeds ‘n huppel in haar stap. Haar hande staan vir niks stil nie. Van bak en brou kan jy haar niks leer nie. Geen resep is haar baas nie en van voorbereiding en onthaal kan sy jou baie vertel. Haar hele lewensreis speel homself in Balfour af. Sy was lid van die VLU en het deur die jare met verskeie spog toekennings weggestap. Naaldwerk is ook een van haar merkwaardige eienskappe. Sy kan skeppende hand items maak vir enige geleentheid. Tannie Chrissie is ‘n trotse ma van 5 kinders, 19 kleinkinders, 25 agterkleinkinders en 1 agter agter kleinkind. Voorwaar ‘n geseëde moeder en ouma om op trots te wees.

Study, work or gap year? How many matrics have a plan for next year? There are many who are still undecided about the right thing to do. Unfortunately, there are also many who will have their plans thrown into disarray by their results or changed personal circumstances. So the key questions a significant number of matrics will have to face in the coming months are: Should I study or work next year? What about a gap year? What happens if I study and fail? “While no one can predict with 100% accuracy the way things will turn out, there are a couple of realities to take into consideration,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of The Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution. “The first thing to note, is that graduates generally earn more throughout their lives than those without post-school qualifications and they are more likely to find employment,” she says.
“So if you are in a position to get a higher education, you must certainly choose that route rather than just go straight into the workplace.” A 2009 study by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit indicated that earnings showed a linear improvement from matric to a degree. At the time, a person with an average matric received R1100 a month in their first job, but this increased to R3100 a month with an average diploma or certificate and rose to R5400 a month with an average degree. And people with a tertiary education were twice as likely to be employed, according to the research. “This differential will generally follow people throughout their careers, with no narrowing of the gap between graduates and non-graduates over a career span. Having a portfolio of work at graduation, for example, allows you to instantly showcase what you have learnt and what makes you an attractive prospect to

Although taking a gap year is a popular option for many matrics, and can be an attractive prospect after having spent 12 years on school benches, its pros and cons should be carefully weighed, says Coughlan. “Unfortunately, a gap year puts you a year behind your peers in terms of studying and earning potential. But if you use the time to make some money or gain life or work experience and you incur no debt, it could be worth considering. Particularly so if it also means that when you do eventually start your studies, you are more focused and able to succeed and graduate in minimum time.” Coughlan says that, from a f inancial perspective, the student who studies straight after school and graduates in three years is significantly better off than matriculants who elect any other option – be it entering the workplace or taking a gap year. “However, the student who takes a gap year, rather than
studying a year and failing, is better off than the student who fails and repeats one year. And much better off than the student who has to repeat two years.” Coughlan says that the numbers to demonstrate the impact of these scenarios are clear – even if one uses very simplistic calculations that ignore living expenses, the cost of debt and any other particular condition. “Time is money. And wasting time has a sustained financial impact throughout a person’s productive life,” she says.

Leerlinge, opgedeel in 5 verskillende streke, moes elk ‘n vraestel skryf om hul wiskunde kennis te toets. Verskeie leerlinge van Hoër- en Laerskool Balfour het onderleiding van juffrou Babie Potgieter hieraan deelgeneem. Die top 30 kandidate wat die beste in elke streek gevaar het, is op Saterdag, 15 November na 1 van 5 universiteite, naaste aan hul omgewing genooi vir ‘n Wiskundepretdag met sertifikaaat- en prysuitdeling. Anika Bothma ‘n graad 7 leerling aan Hoër- en Laerskool Balfour is na die Noordwes Universiteit (Potchefstroom) genooi as een van die top 30 van Noordwes-streek. Die dag het die 30 leerlinge aan verskeie interessante en praktiese wiskunde eksperimente by die universiteit deelgeneem. Hul het dit baie leersaam gevind. Hierna het die sertifikaat- en prysoorhandiging plaasgevind. Anika het ‘n sertifikaat vir uitsonderlike prestasie ontvang en is aangewys as wenner van die streek. Sy behaal ‘n eerste plek met goud.
