Kyk, hoe lyk ons nou! Inwoners van Nigel en omgewing het die Cansa Shavonthon Kankerdag wat by die Angelo Shopping Mall aangebied is, in massas ondersteun. Die dames van Shape ‘n Style het spesiaal hul besigheid se deure gesluit om hul professionele diens die dag aan te bied. Duisende hare het gewaai, niemand het geskroom om kaalkop weg te stap nie. Oulike gesiggies is geverf

wat verskeie karakters uitbeeld. Oud en jonk het spontaan hul baarde en hare volkleur gekleur. Meer as R15 000 is ingesamel vir hierdie projek. Bielie van ‘n pampoen Is jy nuuskierig om te weet hoe groot die pampoene is, wat in 27 Januarie se uitgawe verskyn het? Hierdie vinnig groeiende pampoene het in hul omtrek geweldig uitgesit. Die oranje kleurige pampoen wat 900mm was, is nou 920mm in lengte en die omtrek 1.8m. Hy weeg ‘n stewige gewig van 40kg. Die geelkleurige pampoen was 700mm en

is tans 900mm in lengte met ‘n omtrek van 1.6m. Sy gewig is 37kg. Volgens Martiens, eienaar van hierdie bielie pampoene sou die pampoene swaarder geweeg het as dit nie was vir die droogte wat ons tans beleef nie. “Meeste pampoene se gemiddelde groei in ‘n tydperk van 3 maande, is 7kg tot 9kg. Ek is dankbaar dat my pampoene tussen 9 tot 10 weke so groot en gewigtig is, dat ek dit amper nie kan dra nie” vertel Martiens. Hy besluit om weer pitte te plant en te kyk wat hierdie oes gaan oplewer. Aanhouer wen!

When we think of the word “jump” we may think of high jump, long jump or jumping over an item. Some people may think of their reaction to their boss (or sadly their spouse) and think of how high they are prepared to jump to keep them happy. I would like to share a bit about the problems I have been noticing when people “jump” at the wrong times and for the wrong reasons. Since returning from I have seen a number of people who have been in situations where people “jump” for the wrong reason and the result is often painful to all parties. The first scenario that I would like to look at is where parents “jump” to the tune of their children. The nett result is that the children then become “boss” and have no or very little respect for their parents and do not listen to their parents. The parents then get to a point where they do not know how to handle their children and rather “leave” them to sort their own lives out and this is often disastrous. Parent should always try to keep control and while being reasonable make sure that the rules laid down are kept and that boundaries are set and kept. I have often asked teenagers this question: If you could change one thing about your parents what would it be? The surprise answer 70-80% of the time is: Their “no” should stay “no” and they should not give in and allow us to do what they know is wrong or harmful to us.

The second scenario and one that is becoming more and more problematic is that adults “jump” to conclusions about a situation or a person without taking time to f ind out the truth behind what is happening or said. This often results in families (even couples) breaking up and not speaking to each other (believe it or not – sometimes “forever”). If something happens or someone says something take time to investigate the statement or situation so that you can hear the truth and come to your own decision. Do NOT go to the parties spreading the rumour but rather go direct to the person/people involved and ask to hear their side of the story. Once you have heard both parties and their reasons for the statements you can then make a decision on how to handle the situation. Once you have come to your conclusion do NOT go and tell others as you will be doing exactly what the first person was doing by spreading a rumour. It is YOUR opinion and keep your conclusion to yourself. In this way more people will understand the situation and less people will get hurt.

What do you want? Say your say, let your city know what its people really wants. This is the message of the month, March that the State of the City Address (SOCA). The executive mayor of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mondli Gungubele calls upon residents to contribute to the address by sharing their SOCA tips to help influence the plans for the cities future. “It is extremely important to hear the views of the people as we move towards delivering the most important report about the performance of the City so far. The

people of Ekurhuleni have never let us down in terms of letting us into their thoughts and we are confident that all will once again tell us their expectations”. “As a government of the people, we view public participation in our work as a key component of taking Ekurhuleni forward. I therefore appeal to our residents and opinion makers to participate in this process because we desperately seek their views,” explains Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele. Residents can give their SOCA tips through suggestion boxes at Customer Care Centers, the city of Ekurhuleni’s Facebook page, the municipal off icial website www.ekurhuleni.gov.za or email tips to SOCA.tips@ekurhuleni.gov.za. The closing date for SOCA tips to be entered is Friday, March 20.

Water management plan Last year’s glitches that resulted in almost a month long water supply interruption in parts of the Gauteng province has posed a challenge to all municipalities to better prepare themselves for such incidences. Rand Water is the contracted Service Provider for the entire EMM area and has supplied water to the province without fail since 1906. No one could have anticipated a challenge such as the one experienced during 2014. In this regard, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is working on a future Water Management Plan to cater for such events. One component in the plan is the exploration of an early warning system which would be used to indicate dropping water levels in EMM’s storage reservoirs and allowing for speedy intervention. This will be achieved through a telemetric type system that will synchronize all reservoirs in Ekurhuleni, making it easy to divert water from one supply zone to another. This process will also include the harmonization of the Metro’s underground

infrastructure so that municipal potable water supply zones are aligned to enable to distribute potable water from one supply zone to another, where practically possible. The Municipality will also pull out all the stops to ensure that more portable storage water reservoirs are built by the year 2021, in anticipation of future supply risk and population growth due to urbanization. Additional reservoirs to be built are follows: 20ml reservoir in Brakpan estimated R25million, 5ml water tower in Northmead estimated R32million, 13ml reservoir in Dunottar estimated R23million and 1ml water tower in Visagie Park estimated R10million. “South Africa is by its nature a semidessert area and Gauteng was built far from natural dams in the chase for mining prosperity, which calls on everyone in the province and Ekurhuleni region in particular to use water sparingly, curtailment of dripping taps and report any visible leakages,” Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.

They were able to understand and apply the Word correctly, as preached by the leaders appointed over them. Fellowship: Connection to the right people has proven over and over to be a determining factor in the success we taste in life. The Bible teaches that bad company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33). The early church chose to spend a lot of their time with people of like mind. They operated in love and unity. Communion: Communion is not an optional suggestion; It is a direct command from Jesus (1 Corinthians 11:23-25). As God’s children we are not at liberty to reject or refuse to partake of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. Through communion a number of very important things happen in our lives: We all meet at the foot of the cross as equals – sinful people in

desperate need of redemption. It is the place where we remember and acknowledge what Jesus did for us. It is at the cross that we receive mercy for our sin and grace to become all that God originally intended for us to be. It is also the place where we receive God’s forgiveness and the supernatural ability to forgive others. As we remember the cross, we are confronted with the sin in our own lives that contributed to the necessity of Jesus on the cross. Communion gives cause for self-examination, which is a prerequisite for repentance. Communion brings us to a place of conviction where we actively have to choose for or against God and the way He wants us to do things. Whenever we are confronted with division, difference of opinion or conflict, this decision becomes eminent (1 Corinthians 11:19). Communion is a celebration of the fact that Jesus gave His life so that we could receive life in every area of our lives. In 1 Corinthians 11:23-31 Paul gives the church directions as to how to do communion in such a way as to not bring judgment on ourselves. We are required to consider our lives carefully and to judge ourselves along the standard of the Word. When we fail to do this, we partake of communion in a way that dishonours the body of Christ and so bring the judgment of God upon us. When we refuse to deal with unforgiveness, offences or sin, we open the door to weakness, sickness and even death in our lives (1 Corinthians 11:30). These things cause division in the church and therefore God will never tolerate it. Make sure to include this Christian living in your daily walk with the Lord.

Wat hulle nie weet nie is dat ek eers by Afgri my voertuig laat weeg het, want ek kon sweer die vorige keer was die gewig nie korrek nie. Ek besit my eie skaal en het ‘n baie goeie idee van die gewig skrootmetaal wat op my voertuig is. Vriendelike mannetjies ontvang my en nadat ons ooreengekom het oor ‘n prys word die vrag geweeg en afgelaai. Die leë voertuig word geweeg en ek word kontant betaal. Weer ‘n paar honderd rand minder as wat ek verwag het! Ek gaan weeg my leë voertuig by Afgri en ja sowaar nou weeg die leë voeruig baie minder as by skroothandelaar. Net hier is ek gemotiveerd om hierdie skrywe te rig en die publiek attent te maak, as wat ek terug gaan na die skroothandelaar en probeer om ‘n paar honderd rand terug te kry. Nou kan die gemeenskap duisende rande bespaar deur op die korrekte gewig aan te dring. Staal was toe duurder, so ek moes ongeveer ‘n R1000 per ton meer uitgekry het. Ja, daardie skaal is seker ook maar by ‘n “Scrap Yard” gekoop en nog nooit geyk nie! Mislead of the nation As Zuma and his government cannot solve the challenges facing our country, he has resorted to misleading the public with his “facts” and “figures”. Let’s look at a few examples; Zuma said that it is now looking positive on the jobs front. He stated that based on Stats SA employment figures for the last quarter of 2014 indicate that there are now 15.3million people who are employed in South Africa and that jobs grew by 203,000. The latest employment data from Stats SA shows that from October to December 2014 an additional 203,000 people were employed compared to July to September last year. This thus brought the number of those employed to 15.32-million, the number of unemployed people decreased by 242,000. Although Zuma quoted correct f igures, they were quoted out of context. Zuma compared the third and fourth quarters of 2014. Africa Check interviewed the acting executive manager of labour statistics at Stats SA, Desiree Manamela who stressed the importance of focusing on year-on-year trends and not quarterly comparisons. She said that the trend in labour market data shows that seasonal factors result in an increase in employment during the 4th quarter [October to December] of every year. This is ahead of the planting season for many crops and also the festive period during which retailers hire additional staff. Thus many of the jobs created in this quarter would have been temporary in nature. A year-on-year comparison of the fourth quarters of 2013 and 2014 show that employment still increased but only by 143,000 and the number of unemployed people actually increased by 79,000. Stats SA data shows that the narrow unemployment rate increased by 0.2% to 24.3% between the fourth quarters of 2013 and 2014. Pons-Vignon confirmed that South Africa has an incredibly high unemployment rate; one of the highest in the world and that this trend hasn’t changed. For me the biggest faux pax was when it came to the biggest crises South Africa is currently confronting: the Electricity crisis. In his speech, Zuma said: “The construction of the three new power stations Kusile, Medupi and Ingula, will add 10,000 MW of capacity to the national grid.” This is simply wrong! The country is currently building two power stations, not three as stated in his address. Africa Check’s research confirms that the truth is that Ingula, between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State, is a pump storage scheme, not a power station. Kusile (six 800MW units) and Medupi (six 794MW units) will however add 9,564 MW to the base-load capacity, according to Eskom figures. As it is not delivering, Zuma and his government are simply twisting facts to created new “facts” that make his government look good. South Africa will not be misled. Manny de Freitas MP

Joy dogs visit “Nigel Tehuis” JOY Dogs was founded in 2011 and the primary focus was teaching pre and primary school children all about dogs, what they need and how to take care of them. The JOY Dogs made thousands of children smile and more knowledgeable. In 2014 the focus shifted to institutions for the mentally and physically disabled and also visits to aged care facilities. This is our core business. We feel that the aged are so often neglected and in many instances have had to leave their pets behind when going to live in care. Dogs also serve as a reminder to let loose, have some fun, and live in the moment! The JOY Dogs, Jazmine, Oscar and Yola – (which is where the name J O Y comes from) belong to the breed Old English sheepdogs. Jazmine is 7, Oscar is 5 and Yola is 2 years old. Both Oscar and Yola are imported as the dogs are a rare breed in South Africa with few, if any breeders. Yogi is our retiree at 13 years old. The benefit of interacting with dogs is well known and is both physiological and emotional. Stress and blood pressure are reduced and there is an increase in the serotonin (feel-good) hormones. The interaction with the dogs also gives people in institutions something to talk about and to look forward to. An often heard

Nigel Home for the Aged enjoyed the JOY dogs visit tremendously. They loved touching and cuddling the dogs. This was an inspirational and comforting visit which made all smile. They appreciate the visit and it also meant a lot to the Alzheimer residents. The elderly would love to have more of these visits. comment is “The JOY Dogs have made my day”. As there are costs involved in main-taining the dogs as well as transport, we are looking for any-one who is prepared to help towards funding a visit to an institution so we can continue this valuable work. Fine free week The City of Ekurhuleni has opened an amnesty window period to all its library users to return overdue library material for free. The amnesty week begins from March 14 until March 21. The “Fine Free Week” is part of the Libraries Week celebrations, observed between March 14 and March 21. “The purpose of the amnesty is to recover long outstanding borrowed library material in all 45 Ekurhuleni libraries at no cost to the library members. Returning the materials will ensure that all users equally share on the fountain of knowledge that our libraries produces;” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe. Once the fine free week lapses, users will continue to pay a minimum penalty fee of R 2.50 if they fail to return the material within two weeks.

Join our march! We are a community based organisation that will be dealing with indoor sporting activities in the community and fight against crime and sexual abuse through sporting activities. We are based in the Alra Park, Mackenzieville and Cerutiville area. Currently we are working from 39 Apple Crescent, due to the fact that we have no funds at the moment and depend on sponsors for functioning. We have planned a march, because we have a huge problem with the abuse of illegal substances and sexual activities in our community. We hope to create awareness so that we can start fighting this pandemic that is taking control of our community.
