Good service still exists From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess In today’s times in South Africa I think most of us would agree that service is something that we wish for but very seldom get. Sadly there are many people who come to me with a “problem” related to service, asking me what I feel that they should do in the situation that they find themselves. The question is further extended and I am often asked “what do I do as a Christian”. My personal opinion is that service is not something that we should ignore but rather something that we should give and expect to receive. The trap that too many people fall into is the attitude that “I do not receive good service so why should I give good service”. The truth is that if we live with this attitude we will continue to spiral down to a place of “no service”. Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist ChurchWe recently needed to purchase over R10000-00 worth of tinned food to give out to families who are struggling to survive (hence my appeal a while ago for donations of tinned food). We went to the store that we usually use (before the opening of our mall) and asked that they get “bulk” boxes of various tinned food from the store so that we did not have to empty their racks (and it is obvious easier to transport bulk than loose tins). After 25 minutes we were still waiting and when we went to look for the person “helping” us we found him talking to some people in the store and no tins ready for us to take. I told them to cancel the purchase and we walked out. We went to Checkers in our new mall and asked for the same tins. Within 20 minutes

Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church they were standing next to us with all the tins that we have asked for (in bulk). Further to this when we wanted to push the trolley we were told to leave the trolley and they called another person to help us. To my surprise once we were through the tills they insisted on pushing the trolleys to the car and packing the tins into the car. Well done Checkers, well done Heidelberg Mall – you still know what service is and are prepared to go the extra mile. Here is my thought and challenge to us all. I am sure we all agree that it is fantastic to receive service like this and at the same time our blood pressure is kept to the minimum. With service like this we save time and walk away with a smile of our faces. The challenge – why don’t we ALL go the extra mile and treat each other with the respect that we all deserve? Let us up our service standard and ignore the attitude that we do not have to supply good service because we do not receive good service. Good service DOES exist – it is up to us to spread the good habit and change our attitudes to life.

On December 20 last year a 29 year old man was dragged to his death by 36 years old Zakhele Sibeko in an Isuzu bakkie. On the morning of December 20 there was an argument between the convicted person and the deceased. Information suggested the victim attempted to punch the convict who was at the time seated in his bakkie. He then grabbed the victim by his clothes and sped off dragging him along. A friend of the 29 year old man then set chase in his own vehicle to try and assist the man, when the accused let go of the victim and he fell under the Isuzu bakkie and was driven over. The victim sustained injuries and passed away before medical assistance could arrive. The accused was arrested the following day by the investigator, Warrant Officer Billy Mabelane and charged for the crime. After a lengthy trial the suspect was convicted for culpable homicide and sentenced to 8 years imprisonment. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a fire arm by the court. Ask anyone what they believe are the most common causes of disability and you’re most likely to hear “car accidents”, “freak incidents” or “injuries at work.” What you might be surprised to hear is that these aren’t the most common causes of disability. “Musculoskeletal disorders are the leading cause of disability. Such disorders include the likes of arthritis, back pain, spine and joint disorders. However critical illnesses, such as cancer, heart attack, stroke and diabetes, actually cause the majority of long-term or permanent disabilities (i.e. disabilities that prevent a person from working again). Abovementioned are becoming increasingly prevalent in people younger than 50. Lifestyle choices and personal behaviours that lead to obesity are also becoming major contributing factors to disability,” explains Ryan Chegwidden, Head of Product & Technical at Hollard Life. “Unsurprisingly, motor vehicle accidents do also contribute significantly to disability rates. Typically, most disability claims caused by motor vehicle accidents occur in men younger than 30, with the next biggest risk group being 41 to 50 year old men. Estimates from the Road Traff ic Management Corporation Pria straat, suggest that there are around 20 disabling MAANDPAK - R1 100 accidents on our roads every day.”

Love hopes! Jeremiah 7:7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. (NKJV) The ability to hope, to harbor a desire with the expectation that it will be fulfilled, the sure confidence that God’s Word will be proven true, is an attribute that cannot be separated from a life founded on love (1 Corinthians 13:7). This kind of hope holds within it a safeguard against despair and giving up. When hope is lost, our very attitude and actions most often promote a further decline into desperation and defeat. In the absence of hope, we lose the strength and ability to make progress and so to overcome. Hope, born from a sure conviction of the love of God for us, gives us the supernatural ability to continue steadfastly in the very face of overbearing evidence to the contrary of what we hope for. It lifts our eyes up beyond our current experiences and eggs us on when disappointment seems eminent. Because hope is based on the promises of God and not on past failures or fears, it enables us to experience deep, inner peace regardless of the circumstances we face. In the face of despair we can f ind hope in the following: Christ is our hope (Colossians 1:27): Because Christ lives in us, we have a confident hope of becoming just like Him, living like He lived and doing what He did. The Word (Psalm 119:114): The Word provides us with the promises of God. It also directs us when we find ourselves tempted or challenged by the enemy. In addition to all this it builds our faith and positions us to remain focused on God rather than circumstances. The Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13): The Holy Spirit fills us with joy and faith so that we can abound in hope. Since hope is such a crucial element of our lives as God’s children, it is something often under attack. When we are confronted with feelings of despair or hopelessness we cannot passively accept it. Lovebased living requires of us to immediately take action in order to regain our position of hope.

In these circumstances it is important to remember that just like love compels us to go beyond our human emotions as life directive, living a life of hope also demands a decision, a deliberate choice to embrace an attitude of hope rather than despair. Ecclesiastes 9:4 teaches that hope is ever present as long as there is life. The whole of Romans chapter 12 is dedicated to the beautiful example of Abraham and Sarah persevering faithfully and by choice in the hope they had of becoming parents based on their conviction that God would fulfill the promise He made. King David dealt with the very same issue of hopelessness by directly addres-sing his own soul and demanding of himself to be reminded of the faithfulness of God (Psalm 103:1-14). Hope flows forth from our faith and conviction that the Lord loves us and is therefore willing and able to help us. We become blessed when we deliberately put our hope in the Lord (Jeremiah 17:7-8), trusting that our hope will be rewarded with gladness (Proverbs 10:28) as we persist in prayer (Romans 12:12). Not only does the Lord give us the capacity to hope, He Himself also continues to hope in us. The Father, our only source of authentic love and hope, does not disappoint (Jeremiah 2:13). Because there was Jesus, the ultimate expression of God’s love, there is hope for every dire circum-stance, every overwhelming situation and every possible challenge we can face (Colossians 1:27). If you’ve become discouraged and hopeless over time, be encouraged today, choose to get up and continue steadfastly in God’s purpose for your life because every morning holds in it the beauty of God’s promises fulf illed and His new mercies available to you. May the loving hope He affords you every day, spill over in your life to those you love and share your world with as an everpresent hope of relationships restored, new chances to do better and the joy of always having a beautiful future in sight!

Re-enlisted The South African Police Service (SAPS) management is pleased by the overwhelming response from former members who applied to be re-enlisted within the ranks of the police. This rare window of opportunity for former members is part of management’s plan to capacitate the ranks of the police with highly experienced detectives and former members of visible policing as we are striving to improve the service levels at the coalface. Since this plan was announced two months ago, the SAPS has received 2800 applications from former police off icers nationally up to and including on the closing date, 15 June 2015. Of the 2800 applications, about 1000 were from former detectives. From these applications the SAPS aims to appoint former constables, sergeants, warrant officers and lieutenants to posts in the Detective Service and Visible Policing divisions, the two environments within the SAPS that need capacitation. As things stand, the applications are being considered, based on the requirements listed in the advertisement. Applicants should not have left the service while a disciplinary matter was pending against them. The National Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, was clear on this. She said: “Those with criminal records will not be considered at all. We will not compromise quality for quantity. Only those with a commendable track record of good performance and a clean disciplinary record will be re-enlisted”. The former members will be properly vetted and have their fingerprints checked to ensure that none of them have criminal records. Re-enlistment Boards will be convened in the provinces with representation from Head Office to consider all applications and make final recommendations to the Human Resources Committee for consideration. The National Commissioner has also been

tasked the Internal Audit component to check the entire process to ensure that it is fair and objective. The plan is to finalise the process by the end of November 2015. Furthermore, it is a fact that many Government departments lost sizable numbers of employees as a result of confusion about pension fund benef its. SAPS was also affected. Despite this, our attrition rate for 2014 was 3,5% of our workforce, well below the normal 4.5% to 5%. There is therefore nothing sinister or untoward about the loss of members in the SAPS since all government departments and private companies lose employees yearly for various reasons. In the previous media coverage of the re-enlistment, a misleading perception was created, which seemed to suggest that the number of members who left the service has tripled, but this was not the case. We have since improved our reporting mechanisms by ensuring that all services terminated are reported electronically by the provinces and divisions to the national office, and the figures are up-to-date and tallied at all times. According to the information at our disposal the figures on attritions did not triple even though they increased, and we have explained why. The following are the figures on attritions per f inancial year: 2009 & 2010 = 4 953. 2010 & 2011 = 4 352. 2011 & 2012 = 4 466. 2012 & 2013 = 4 581. 2013 & 2014 = 5 447. 2014 & 2015 = 7 249. Since the advertisement of the reenlistment programme, our human resource personnel and current serving members have been inundated by telephone calls from former members who wish to come back through the current reenlistment. The 2800 applications are indicative of this. However, it can not be over emphasised that we are looking for the best candidates who will add value to the organisation. CLN Bana Pele Fun day Fun and spiritual education program was held on Friday July 17 and Saturday 18 by the Christian Leadership Network Alra Park. The annual children’s event is an educational weekend that started with a march on Friday morning through Alra Park that ends at the Alra Park High School. Vernon from the traff ic department explained road safety to the children. Boys and girls did dances and enjoy the day with special treats as they were fed breakfast

and lunch with fruit and were spoiled with chips and sweets. An impressive puppet show by Adri Kleynsmith brought the message “I am my brother’s keeper.” They were told of the love of Jesus and how to become a keeper. The children were very impressed and enjoyed the message! The CLN (Christian Leadership Network) Bana Pele children program from Alra Park wants to thank everybody that made these two days possible.

Ons het ‘n Anker Deur Dr Gideon van Rhyn. Kan jy jou ‘n boot sonder ‘n behoorlike anker voorstel? As die wind loei en die see ontstuimig raak, sal so ‘n boot reddeloos rond dobber en selfs sink. Vreemd genoeg is daar mense wie se lewensbote ankerloos is. Waarop berus jou vertroue in jou besondere omstandighede? Drie dinge. Hy is ‘n werklikheid – Hy leef!

Hy is nie dood nie. Ek juig want Hy leef! Halleluja! (Kol. 2:9) Iemand vra: If God is dead, then what’s this living in my heart? Tweedens: Jesus dink aan my. When he was on the cross, I was on his mind!’ Dis hoe Hy is.

The DA Springs-Daveyton and SpringsNigel constituencies donated to four needy households and charities. Donations of clothing, shoes, blankets and bedding were donated to the Nigel Care Centre with DA Duduza and Nigel councillors Wally Labuschagne, Ruhan Robinson and Zodwa Radebe, which cares for HIV patients and orphans in the Duduza area. This was followed by a donation to a family in Kwa-Thema who lost everything in a shack fire, where clothing, blankets and essential household goods were donated to help ease the burden on the family. The DA then made donations to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Petersfield in Springs who work closely with underprivileged communities throughout the year. The activities finished off in Daveyton at the Mary Dabula Old Age Home where clothing was donated to the elderly. The DA was warmly received by all communities.

Boomplant is groot pret!

Wanneer is ‘n huurder ’n onwettige besetter?

One million calls Taking Stock

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Services Call Centre this week logged its millionth call since the new and improved service was launched in May last year. The million-call mark is a sign that the Metro’s investment in the call taking centre and continuous efforts to improve its service is paying off. Last year Ekurhuleni opened a revamped call centre through which citizens can contact the municipality to report incidents which require attention, including potholes, water leaks, burst pipes, electricity outages and more. The staff compliment was also boosted and over 200 agents were employed. “All of these interventions have resulted in an efficient call centre which compares favourably against international best practice and leading private sector companies,” says Member of Mayoral Committee for Corporate and Shared Services, Queen Duba. “Performance has improved from 73% of calls being answered within two minutes to 96% of calls being answered within an average of 40 seconds.

Furthermore, the percentage of calls which are abandoned amounts to 1.3% of incoming calls and the duration of an average call is just over two minutes.” The millionth call was received between 19:15 and 19:30 on Tuesday, July 21 2015. The call volume in May 2014 was 46 941. That number has almost doubled to 93 148 in June this year. Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe, encourages residents to continue making use of the service which is constantly being improved. “The Metro has linked the call centre to a performance system which monitors the efficiency of the services rendered by the call centre and other service departments within the municipality. It is therefore vital that residents utilise the service in order to ensure that their queries are attended to timeously,” said Gadebe. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Services Call Centre number is 0860 543 000. Residents must ensure that they are given a reference number when they contact the centre, to enable progress on their query to be tracked easily.

Drug addiction is a scourge that could overcome anyone, and Nigel and its surroundings are not exempted from this. It does not discriminate between age, income group, social background or sex and could overcome anyone, anytime. Just in the past seven days a major drug bust took place on one of the small-holdings, which involved several million rands worth of drugs. Freedom Recovery Centre has been going from strength to strength since opening its doors in 2008. From the initial 5 people they have treated when they opened their doors, they now treat at least 40 recovering addicts who live in as in-patients. Freedom Recovery Centre is a rehabilitation Centre for addiction-tired recovering addicts and alcoholics. They are registered with the Department of Social Development in terms of The Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act, Act 70 of 2008 and are the f irst rehabilitation Centre in Sedibeng that boasts registration. They are committed to bring about lifestyle changes in the recovering addicts’ life through various programmes, ranging from 21 days to 24 weeks. They follow a holistic approach in recovery by not only focussing on the spiritual growth of the

The spicy scent and long lasting flowers that come part and parcel with being a stock make it a favourite for gardens and then, ultimately, even cut flowers for your favourite vases. Its botanical name, Matthiola incana, was bestowed for Pietro Andrea Matthioli, a 16th century Italian physician and naturalist who first identified it. Even though it’s a Mediterranean native, it is now found all over the world, such is its popularity with gardening lovers. It was shipped off to England and extensively bred immediately after being identified and named. According to the language of flowers, stocks symbolise bonds of affection and promptness with a meaning that reads “You’ll always be beautiful to me”. The common name for the most popular variety for bedding is the ten-week-old stock which, as per its name, flowers approxi-mately 10 weeks after planting and could plausibly have some tie to the ‘promptness’ reference.
