Impossible to determine their ages, we are of the opinion that the new male was approx. 3 years young as his leggings (feathered tarsi) were still pale and not black as found in adult eagles. With no breeding in 2011 and 2012, the new pair bred successfully during 2013, 2014 and 2015. Currently there is a fivemonth-old juvenile within the proximity of the farm, learning eagle skills from the adult pair. She will remain within their natal home range until at least mid November before being gradually ousted by the adult eagles. This process can take at least six weeks to complete before she finds herself on her own and outside their territorial boundaries. Unfortunately, we do not know what the full extent is of eagle pairs’ territorial boundaries are, and we are very keen to determine this with public participation. A long-term project, it is essential that we gain as much information as possible. The information can be logged on our form on page 10 and returned to myself or Carike either by scanning or return email or provide the details on our Facebook page: Klipriviersberg Verreaux’s Eagles Inc WBC.

Proud of so many! From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess Life is tough out there and there are lots of reasons for people to moan and complain. At the same time there are a lot of reasons that people can point f ingers at people and companies, complaining and running the people and companies down. I am also aware that this is a time of Halloween and Christians are under attack. So all in all there are lots of reasons to be negative. But here is what I am observing at the moment. There are more and more people reacting positive in their life right now. There are more and more people prepared to “face their giants” rather than run away from them. There are more and more people acknowledging that they can only overcome their “giants” by drawing closer to God and relying more on Him to overcome the problems of the world. I f ind this to be a very exciting observation. I have noticed this by the way people speak, their actions and most importantly by the comments and “stuff ” that gets posted on media such as Face Book. Media can be a great resource but it is also a source of negativity and a place where many people get hurt and confidentiality is broken. Media is not the

right place to “empty your heart” and to trash people, situations or organizations. When speaking, acting or posting on media we need to remember that once “posted” we can never remove it – what is done/said is done. To say sorry is great – but the hurt remains and all too often the comments are made in the heat of the moment and are not actually what the person meant. Face facts, when a person is angry the words that come out of our mouths (or fingers on media) are often not what we mean to say. Why do we not take this a step further? Why do we not do a daily post saying something positive that we have experienced in our lives the previous day. The result will actually be awesome. We will start encouraging people (this is what we are called to do) instead of making people negative. We will start reminding people that life is good and that we trust in God at all times (the “post” does not have to be Christian at all – just some positive thing that has happened). We are very quick to post when someone cuts in front of us while driving in town but we never post when someone waited at a crossing to let an old lady walk across the road. Post positive, live positive – we will all fell much better.

10 Years Talk open eyes to the possibilities! Balfour– Mfanafuthi John Nhlapo was arrested October 8 and was charged with rape, which occurred from 1996 to 2007 at Siyathemba near Balfour. He committed the offence while staying with the victim. It started when the elders were at work. Mfanafuthi would play with the victim and other friends, and call the victim to play with him under the bed. When she refused he forced himself on her. Every time this incident took place he told her to be quiet. The victim was told not to tell anyone about the matter or she will be assaulted when the elders are at work. He continued raping the victim until the victim ran from home and went to stay with other family members. Her father the brother of the accused claim that she must come back home. The victim broke her silence and told her aunt who was staying at Johannesburg before reporting the incident to the police. On October 9, Mfanafuthi was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, plus 4 year suspended by the Balfour regional court. Balfour station commander applauded members of the FCS which is the family violent child protection and sexual offences unit for their dedication in dealing with crimes against women and children.

Bust A 28 years old man was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Wednesday 21 October 2015 at Weigh Bridge, along the N3 Freeway in Heidelberg. Heidelberg Police were conducting an integrated roadblock with Lesedi Traff ic, Provincial Traffic, SARS, Department of Community Safety, Border Policing, as well as Tracker Companies. Whilst police were busy with their routine roadblock duties, a white Mercedes Benz mini-bus was stopped. When police were conducting searches to the vehicles and passengers, they found the suspect in possession of unlicenced Norinco 9mm pistol and 30 life ammunition. Suspect was arrested and he will appear before Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon.

It is not often that people are comfortable talking openly about cancer especially cancer that affects men. The reality is, it is a great concern and the community needs to be educated more about it, particularly middle-aged and elderly people. The 71 year-old Edward Dhlamini who, amongst other residents was surprised to learn that men too can be diagnosed with breast cancer. Dhlamini attended the first leg of the City of Ekurhuleni’s Cancer Awareness campaign. The campaign is aimed at educating the community about different types of cancer. Women were encouraged to look out for irregular bleeding and discharge, unfamiliar plumpness and blemishes around their breasts and warned to not treat any unusual bodily changes as normal. Men were also taught how to conduct breast self-assessments, to monitor their urinal pattern and identify changes in their bodies. Zonkizizwe Clinic Head, Savera Bharath, also encouraged them to not be shy and visit their nearest health care facilities for tests as prostate and testicular cancer can only be detected through blood tests in their early stages. The factors that are known to increase the risk of cancer such as tobacco and alcohol use, as well as poor eating habits were discussed by cancer survivor, Nthabiseng Matlala. She emphasized how being diagnosed with cancer is not “the end of the world”. “Yes you will feel sick and your body may change if you have to undergo chemotherapy, but leading an active and healthy lifestyle free of fatty foods, alcohol and cigarettes you can beat cancer when it is diagnosed early,” said Matlala.

Mind blowing! Acts 2:7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? (NKJV) The outpouring of the Holy Spirit as recorded in the book of Acts marks the birth of the Church, one of the most important historical events that ever took place. When we consider the account of these happenings a few things immediately become evident. Firstly the newborn church started out with ordinary people that received the Holy Spirit and through this were transformed into world changers! Right from the very first moment, the church started growing because every bystander was completely amazed by the way in which God moved in and through the believers. Through the working of the Holy Spirit, the believers reached out across the boundaries of language and culture and people of every walk of life, ethnicity, age group and background were included in the everincreasing number of believers. As God’s children it is imperative that we understand that He called us to be extraordinary. Our lives on earth should consistently yield tangible evidence of the goodness and power of God. God’s involvement in our lives (through the working of the Holy Spirit) sets us apart in the way we think, operate and do life. Because of this, our lives should look different from people who are not serving God. The only way in which this becomes possible is by aligning our focus with God’s perspective as we f ind it in the Word (Matthew 6:23). Only when we do this, can we start living lives guided by the Holy Spirit and completely set apart for the will and purpose of God. The Church of Acts caused a general uproar in their community. Not only did people marvel at what they saw in the lives of the believers, they were also moved to talk about it. Their lives shouted out in testimony to the astounding God that they served. Their everyday-ordinary-lives were such that it overwhelmed people around them with an awareness of God. Some people responded in awe, some in mockery and some in confusion but nobody was left unresponsive! Rather than reflecting their ordinary selves, they accurately reflected through the way they interacted and lived, who God is.

Since the Church of Acts serves as a model of what God wants the Church to look like, it goes without saying that this should still be the norm today. If our lives are not such that it prompts people to be amazed to the point of speaking about it, it means that we are missing the mark. The key to living a mind blowing, extraordinary, God-reflecting kind of life is found in Acts 1:8 where we find the promise that the baptism of the Holy Spirit goes handin-hand with receiving power. As a result of the indwelling Spirit of God, we will become witnesses – people with first hand experience of the power of God in our lives. Without the Holy Spirit, we do not have the power or capacity to live exceptional lives. In fact, an absence of the Holy Spirit in our lives leaves us prone to sap power and energy rather than live dynamic lives that empower and inspire others. In Ephesians 5:18 the Apostle Paul likens a life lived under the influence of the Holy Spirit to someone who is under the influence of wine – such a person loses all fear of people and manifests behaviour and confidence in accordance with the substance they abused rather than their actual personality. Likewise, we should yield to the Holy Spirit in such a way that our own personalities, limitations, fears and scruples fall away. When this happens, there are certain things that will immediately become evident in our lives. People that live under the influence of the Holy Spirit can conf idently (Acts 2:42 Ephesians 5:19): Speak the Word. Have a song in their hearts. Engage in consistent thanksgiving to God. Submit to one another. Does a mind blowing, amazing, extraordinary life not sound so much better than mundane and ordinary living? Why settle for less than what God has for you? Choose today to say ‘yes’ to God’s call to live a life that astounds and amazes those around you. Join us at 3C as we step out in faith and commit to live under the influence of the Holy Spirit so that we can make an impact on our communities that will last for many generations to come – just like the original Church in Acts!

Service disruption

Since October 19, Gautrain bus drivers have resorted to taking unauthorised lunch breaks mornings between 10h00-11h00 and 17h00 -18h00 afternoon shift. The dispute between the bus operating company and bus drivers relate to an interpretation provision in the Main Collective Agreement regarding the provisions of lunch hours. In May this year the court granted an interdict forcing striking bus drivers from taking these lunches breaks and directed them to work in accordance with their conditions of service. This court interdict remains binding on NUMSA and its members. We apologise for the inconvenience and ask that passengers consider alternative means to get to and from the Gautrain stations.

Anger hunger Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture & Rural Development, Lebogang Maile expressed concerns at the high levels of hunger, an overly concentrated and expensive food system. He urged Gauteng residents to take charge of their nutritional needs by engaging in subsistence farming and taking up government initiatives to curb hunger. This statement was made against the backdrop of this year’s World Food Day celebrations. According to different studies, nearly 70 million people were pushed into extreme poverty due to rising food prices in 2011. The UN Food Agency contends that inadequate household production, insufficient income and weak buying power results in one in eight people experiencing chronic hunger and not getting enough food to lead healthy lives on a global scale.

Maile said that hunger and food insecurity is a serious concern as it affects over 3 million people in Gauteng. The Bureau for Food & Agricultural Policy shows that from April 2014 to April 2015, the cost of a basic food basket in South Africa increased from R491 to R514 with the price of staples experiencing a 50% hike between 2013 and 2014, making basic food unaffordable to many poverty stricken households. “When the price of staples increases at this level, it not only pushes many families to abject poverty but is also leads to a vicious cycle that sparks soaring prices for meat and poultry. The fact that the poor have to resort to skipping meals and or reducing rations to cope with hunger when 30% of the food produced in this country is lost through waste and dumping is an indictment to the food industry.” Research suggests that R61 billion or an equivalent of 2% of GDP is lost in local food waste across the value chain. Maile said the Gauteng Twenty-Year Food Security Plan, which aims to reduce the levels of food insecurity in the province to 5% by 2030, carries real solutions to end hunger in the province. The plan rests on several pillars such as auditing land assets, training communities and farmers in sustainable food production and climate smart agriculture and working with food companies to distribute nutritious food to needy communities whilst curbing excessive food waste by retailers and manufacturers. It also aims to support community food gardens with inputs, training and equipment. Gauteng has supported over 60 000 community food gardens with technical and resources support since 2009. The province’s interventions to integrate black small holder farmers in the food production industry resulted in over 40% of the fresh produce supplied to public hospitals in Gauteng is sourced from this sector.

Sports qualifications in 2015

You can’t go wrong with a career in sport If you love sports, don’t hesitate any further: follow your heart – and study Sports. Natalie Rabson of Boston City Campus & Business College points out that the sports industry is massive and offers lots of career choices and long-term prospects.

administration, and sports club management – teach basics about managing sports clubs and teams, sports injuries and sports psychology; this course is delivered in the distance mode. Students are also trained in First Aid and CPR.

“You can’t go wrong with choosing sport,” she comments.

Rabson is quick to point out that you don’t need to be a boffin or even athletic in any sport to study sports science and follow a career in the sports world. “You need to have a passion for sport and the will to learn as much as you can. Many sports stars enrol for our courses – they love sport, but in tandem choose to build a career while they continue working in the sports industry. When they become older and cannot competitively perform on the field any more, or encounter an injury, their passion does not end there.”

“Throughout the centuries, sport has mostly been a source of entertainment, but not really a source of income. Today, the world of sport has grown into a mega industry, offering a wide variety of jobs in sports administration, coaching, sports marketing and PR, sports entertainment and hospitality, and sports reporting for radio, TV, print and digital media – not to mention spectacular options like biomedical engineering, sports physiotherapy, softtissue therapy, sports science research, sports nutrition science, and many more.” “Many who show a passion for sport, are not aware of the array of sports careers available out there,” says Rabson. “Sports enthusiasts enrol for other programmes, not realising that they could actually fulfil a dream by channelling their passion into a sports career, with a proper sports course. It’s a good idea, Rabson reminds future students, to get professional career advice, specifically geared towards sport, before committing to further studies. Boston City Campus & Business College offers courses in sports management; sports administration; sports club management; and football coaching and administration. Boston is also a training body for Cricket SA, those courses so popular with people from all kinds of backgrounds and varying ages. Read about real-life stories on our website, of people who studied at Boston and have made a great success in sports-related careers.

To find out more about careers in sports, or the training needed to enter the sports industry, speak to a career advisor at one of the Boston City Campus & Business College campuses nationwide. The Boston career advisors can help you choose the option best suited for your abilities, personality and future dreams. The career advice is offered free of charge – without obligation to enrol for a specific course. Visit www.boston.co.za & get the contact details of your nearest Boston College. Quite difficult not to recognise some famous names, those that studied at Boston, like Piet Botha (Border cricketer), Norrie Williamson (sports writer), Dane Klate (Orlando Pirates and SA player), and Helen Flemming (SA rowing). Well-known personalities such as Lefa Tsutsulupa (Moroko Swallows), Gary Parker Nance (TCB stadium manager), football legend John Moeti and Dave Nosworthy (MNet Supersport) are also among those who studied through Boston while working in the sports arena, and have successful careers. Are you a rugby fan and are following the Rugby World Cup? Quintin Geldenhuys, the South African born Italian player studied sports management at Boston City Campus & Business College, Bedfordview in 2001. Minister visit Marievale The Minister of Environmental Affairs, Mrs Edna Molewa led the celebration for World Migratory Bird Day at the Marievale Bird Sanctuary in Gauteng on October 15. Addressing school children and stakeholders, the Minister said, “It is indeed a pleasure for me to be marking this, the first official celebration of World Migratory Bird Day in South Africa here at Marievale Bird Sanctuary, which forms part of one of the largest wetland reserves in the Highveld region of southern Africa. I’m told that this area is one of the largest refuges for waterbird species and that there are strong populations of almost 300 species found here.” This wetland system in Blesbokspruit plays a critical role in our conservation efforts as government and is one of the larger tributaries of the Vaal River that provides water to Gauteng. Wetland systems play a critical role in mitigating the effects of urbanization. These natural wonders play a unique and vital role in maintaining a delicate balance between different ecosystems and biomes. To raise awareness of the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats, WMBD was declared in 2006 under the Convention for the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA ). The timing of the international WMBD celebrations (1 May) is linked to the return of migratory birds to the northern hemisphere in their summer period, which means migratory birds are leaving rather than arriving in South Africa at this time. We are celebrating in October to mark the arrival of northern hemisphere birds in South Africa. The theme for this year’s 2015 WMBD is “Energy– make it bird-friendly!” This focuses on the use of migratory bird friendly energy technologies to ultimately

prevent, minimize and mitigate the impacts of renewable energy systems and technologies on migratory birds and their habitats. Birds and other animals often collide with power lines. These same birds nest on infrastructure, resulting in supply disruptions. There is need to manage both the risk to our fauna and flora caused by the rollout of energy infrastructure – and at the same time ensure that the natural environment is not irreversibly damaged by this infrastructure. In 1996 Eskom and the Endangered Wildlife Trust, (EWT) formalised a longstanding relationship aimed at coming up with an integrated management system to minimise the negative impacts of electrification and electricity supply on bird life. Our people need to know more on how to protect migratory birds and natural resources in their vicinity in general. At the same time, sustainable use of natural resources is an essential component of our country’s development. South Africa is an important range state of migratory birds and has an opportunity to play an important role not only locally, but also in global conservation efforts of these species and their habitats.

Cleaning campaign Have you ever considered that throwing a cigarette butt, a banana peel or an empty water bottle out of your car into a public space could cost you R2000 or land you in jail? Furthermore, have you considered that in a year it could cost your municipality millions of Rands to clear refuse and building rubble from a veld or street corner? If not, the City of Ekurhuleni is asking you to start being considerate and take responsibility for the cleanliness of your neighborhood. On October 24, Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Cllr Mondli Gungubele, unveil the Clean City programme which is aimed at eliminating illegal dumping, littering and rodent infestation. Building wise - did you know? There seems to be a lack of knowledge and understanding of building regulations with the average home owner. This often results in illegal structures being erected with unforeseen consequences like insurance claims being repudiated after f ire damage or even loans refused to finance new buyers. National Building Regulations are determined by the South African Bureau of Standards and are uniformly applicable to all local authorities throughout South Africa. These regulations are published as South African National Standards or SANS for short. These building regulations as per SANS 10400 can become quite complicated, and are normally interpreted and implemented by trained professionals and local authority officials. Some basic information however should be taken note of by home owners, and the following article will try to put some of these basic rules that every home owner needs to know in plain language. If anything is still unclear: ask the professionals! Let us start with the most common question: DO I NEED A PLAN? All building work is divided into two categories: minor and normal building work. For any building work that does NOT fall under ‘minor’ work, you most definitely need proper approved building plans. You do NOT need permission or submit plans for the following [SANS 10400-A: A2(1)(g)(aa)]: 1.Any pergola / wire fence / open sided fabric (canvass/ shade-cloth) covered shelter for car, caravan or boat. 2.The following structures IF NOT EXCEEDING 5 sq.m (i.e. 2m x 2.5m): any loose standing building /

Lekker verras

poultry house / aviary (birds) / solid fuel store (coal/ wood/ charcoal) / tool shed / children’s playhouse / cycle shed / greenhouse / open sided shed or carport (still under 5 sq.m!!). If any of these are larger than 5 sq.m you need to apply for approval with the local authority. For certain structures like carports, swimming pools and small alterations to buildings, your building inspector might ask you for a site plan only or other minor details instead of a full building plan, but this is at his discression only. There is a list of such structures in SANS 10400-A: AZ2 . It is important therefore to contact your local authority for permission for ANY building work whatsoever to determine what level of plans are required. You may not do any alterations, remove internal walls or change windows and doors without permission. Any one of these ‘minor’ things could possibly impact on the integrity of the building and could cause lateral damage. Even if the local authority does not require plans with your application, it is strongly advisable to engage a registered professional person to check the safety of your intentions. Both structural as well as energy eff iciency implications need to be considered. For further information on this article you may contact your local building inspector or any professional registered with the S. A. Wie is jou held?

27 OCTOBER 2015

Urgent Rand Water and Municipalities urge consumers to use water sparingly. Persistent high temperatures in Rand Water’s area of supply continue to strain its bulk water supply system. The lack of rainfall in Gauteng is exacerbating the situation. The high water demand will cause localised problems in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, the City of Johannesburg and the City of Tshwane. All consumers must use water responsibly at all time especially on weekends. Advice on how to save water is available on the Water Wise link on Rand Water’s website – www.randwater.co.za.
