VIEW ONLINE @ www.rekord.org.za As with many of the little outlying towns, Nigel began as a gold mining town in the late 1800s, named, not after anyone particularly famous. Instead for a book the prospector, Sir Walter Scott, happened to be reading at the time they discovered gold here - The Fortunes of Nigel. Whilst the gold mines recently closed, the industrial area of the town keeps its economy ticking over. The Gautrain rail cars were dispatched from Nigel and electricity line hardware and towers are manufactured here, amongst other things. This does mean that the centre of the city is anything but pretty. But head into the suburbs and the leafiness of Gauteng is once again evident.
If you do one thing whilst visiting Nigel, make sure that you head out on the R42 on the Marievale road extension to the Marievale Bird Sanctuary, a beautiful escape from the hustle and bustle of city living, lying on a large wetland roughly 10 km outside of town. Over 65 water bird species are found here and over 3 500 types of birds – to call it a prime birding spot does not quite do it justice. The team at Birding South Africa advocate that this is the best place in Gauteng to try and spot the goliath, black squacco and purple heron. Even marsh owls are evident in the grasslands during winter. The Marievale Bird Sanctuary has off icially been classif ied as a nature reserve.

I share this at risk of annoying someone. Many years ago I wrote an article while on holiday and shared some of my experiences with you all. A while later I received a stinking letter asking me how I could write “all about me”. Well this is not about me but rather about God and His plan for the way we live. I have the fortune of sitting in St Lucia for a midweek break and we went to Cape Vidal today. We have just got back and I am now writing this in the comfort of our flat. What a beautiful experience of God’s creation. As we entered the Wetlands Sanctuary we seemed to be in a different part of the world. The vegetation seemed greener, the sky bluer and God’s presence more real. As we took a slow ride towards the sea we became aware that we were probably not going to see the “big 4” (there are no lion here) but we would see all the small wonders and miracles. We saw small buck that you normally do not see as they are very scared and run away – yet here they stayed for a short while before moving away. We came across a warthog with a baby – right next to the road. They both were quite calm and carried on eating without running away. On our way out of the Wetlands we came across two MASSIVE Kudu bulls. We “stalked” them driving very slow and managed to pull up next to them. They were about five meters from the car and just carried on eating. They were quite calm. Then there were the Samango Monkeys. They are an endangered species and always seem to hide away and move away from you when you get too close or make
Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church a noise with the cameras. We also saw hundreds if not thousands of crabs on the beach. They were running up and down the beach, in and out of the water. But as you start approaching them, even very slowly, they rush off either into the water or into their little holes. You see, these creatures were not so calm and were afraid of their surrounds and people. Here is what went through my mind today. How calm are we? Are we nervous about life happening around us? Do we jump to conclusions about our situation and life? Or are we calm, ready to face the world whatever comes our way? I believe that all Christ Followers need to be calm, because God is on our side! As Christ Followers we need to face the world with confidence because of God’s presence in our live and NOT face life with fear. Stop being jittery, be confident and face up to life. God is on your side and with Him all things are possible.

This country sweeps international travel prizes and has travellers raving about its beauty so much that it has the highest repeat tourism of any long haul destination in the world! Considering how crazy people are about the place, it’s not surprising that South Africa takes the top spot in the beauty stakes. The town of Franschhoek has been named amongst the five loveliest in the world, and the metropolis of Cape Town is more often than not picked as the most beautiful city on earth by travel lists and tourists alike. With some of the finest national parks in the world, South Africa has been rated the finest wildlife destination on earth and is Africa’s most biodiverse. The Greater Kruger National Park and Limpopo Transfrontier Park has more species of large mammal than anywhere else in the world. Surrounding Cape Town is the world’s densest plant kingdom by species count. The King Protea flower is a gorgeous bloom the size of a dinner plate! Table Mountain is one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature. When viewed from across Table Bay this world wonder provides one of the greatest views on Earth, and has been named one of the world’s greatest mountains. Incredibly, two of the eleven mountains chosen for this honour are located entirely within South Africa. The other is the Amphitheatre, a gigantic cliff regarded as one of the most impressive in the world. The Amphitheatre is found in the Drakensberg, one of the world’s most beautiful and utterly distinctive mountain ranges. It has been named the third in the list of must see mountain ranges. Falling off its face is possibly the tallest waterfall on earth, though officially the second tallest, which is arout twenty times the height of Niagara! ‘The Tugela Falls’ plunge over 3000 feet in 5 abrupt steps! Acts 2:42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. (NLT) In Acts 2:42 we find that the early church of Acts was built on four basic pillars of Christianity. The Bible says that the members of this church continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, fellowship, communion and prayer. Still today these things are crucial to Christian survival. Compromising in any of these very important areas causes us to struggle in our walk with the Lord. Each one of these areas brings specific, important elements into our lives. The apostles’ doctrine speaks of the Word of God and more specif ically a belief system about God and His purpose for humanity. The Word should form the foundation on which we build our every decision and in this way our very lives. Jesus teaches about this beautifully when He tells the parable of the wise man and the foolish man who both built the same structures and then faced the same challenges (Luke 6:46-49). The only difference in their lives was the outcome – one house could withstand the storm and the other collapsed. The same principle still holds true today - the person who builds his/her life on the Word can expect their life structure to weather the storms and challenges of life whilst those who build on opinions and human thinking will f ind their lives destroyed through the obstacles and turmoil we sometimes face on earth. It is important for us to make the Word an integral part of our lives. John 8:31 teaches that only those who abide in the Word are true disciples. In addition to this, only those who know the Word, in the sense of having made it a part of themselves, can be set free by it. The Word of God heard and meditated upon generates faith in our hearts. Hebrews 11:1 teaches that it is absolutely impossible for us to please God without faith. Romans 1:17 confirms this by stating that the just, the righteous, God’s children, live by faith. The Word teaches us that we should make it our conscious aim to not be ignorant by studying to show ourselves approved (2 Timothy 2:15). Ignorance has the same consequences as failure to respond to the Word we know, it is not an excuse and should be actively avoided. Making it a matter of importance to get to the Word and to reach a place of knowing what the Word says is however only the first step in living the spectacular life God has planned for us. In Deuteronomy 30:14-16 the nation of God is confronted with the fact that knowledge, although vital, only brings us to a place of choice without making the choice for us. When we know what the
Word says on any given topic, we are still at liberty to choose against it. God’s heart for us, as very clearly spelled out when He implores His people to choose life, is that we should live and prosper. In spite of His desire for us to flourish, our own decision as to the options of blessing and curse that is given to us in the Word is the determining factor with regards to the outcome we will experience. Although it is evident throughout the Word that conquest and victory are part of our God-given make-up and that the Lord therefore expects us to live lives that reflect this, it is only possible if we tap into the Lord through the Word. In Matthew 12:33 we learn that a tree is known by its fruit and that we speak out of the abundance of our hearts. We need only to listen to what we are saying in our everyday life and interaction to know what the content of our hearts is. Should this not be in line with what the Word says, the answer lies not in changing our speech but rather in changing our hearts. Heart-level-change is only possible through the working of the Holy Spirit as we spend time in God’s presence. True repentance as evidenced in a changed heart and altered behavior always happens in the presence of the Lord before it happens anywhere else. When we repent before the Lord, He forgives us and cleanses us of all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). Refusing to acknowledge that we have sinned and are in need of forgiveness is evidence toward the fact that we do not have the Word in us. Because we acknowledge and understand our desperate need for God to forgive and change us, we spend time in fasting and prayer. Through our relationship with the Lord we continually learn and grow. Our practical application of what we’ve learnt positions us to speak and teach accordingly. Since we live by the words of our mouths, on a daily basis speaking our worlds into existence, it is vital for our survival to have the Word (the apostle’s doctrine) inside us. In addition to this we need to learn from people whose teaching carries the weight of their lives and also in turn be teachers that teach through personal testimony. Isaiah 55:10-11 gives us the beautiful promise that not a single word spoken by God will ever return to Him without having done what it was sent to do. His Word in our mouths provides others with spiritual bread from which they can eat and be nurtured. It is also a source of seed from which others can sow into their circle of influence. Just like a farmer that sows and then patiently waits for the seed to grow we should continue sowing the seed of the Word even if we don’t see immediate results. Join us in this our last week of fasting as we seek the face of the Lord and immerse ourselves in His Word.

Dit sal ‘n leeftyd neem. Nee dit sal die ewigheid in beslag neem om die dieptes van die juweel wat opgesluit is in hierdie paragraaf waaruit dié teks geneem is te probeer peil. Maar laat ons nie in verbasing na die hemel vir uitleg staar nie, maar dat ons onsself vergewis van die voorregte, wat ons aangebied word op ons aardse reis van om te heers deur Jesus Christus. Ons mag nie die toepassing van hierdie belofte in ons lewens uitstel nie. Ons sal straks moet wag tot die toekomstige lewe om die ware omvang en die dieper betekenis, wat ons aardse verstand te bowe gaan, te begryp. Maar by die lees van hierdie vers, word ons aangemoedig om dit ons eie te maak, hier en nou en in die lewe hierna. Maar hoe kan hierdie stelling waar wees? Ons sal wil redeneer dat ‘n geseënde lewe gepaardgaande met hierdie oorwinning slegs moontlik is vir hulle wie se ontstaan of geboorte vanuit die hemel is. Die mens daarenteen is aards uit oorde van sy natuurlike geboorte, binne die eerste Adam van wie geskrywe is dat hy ‘n lewende siel geword het. Dus is hierdie hemelse lewe slegs bedoel vir dié wat ‘hemels’ gebore is. Daarom moet ons geboorte van bo af vanuit die tweede Adam op wie ons vertrou, die lewe gewende Gees bewerkstellig word. Kolosense 15: 45 verklaar dat dit wat uit vlees gebore is, is vlees en kan dit nie self ophef tot op hierdie geestelike vlak nie.
Die Heilige Gees moet dit in ons binneste oordra en bevestig dat ons geestelike dinge moet bedink. Maar Hy sal dit alleenlik vir ons doen wanneer ons ons harte na Christus toe ophef in kinderlike geloof en tot volle oorgawe kom. Dink net aan die verskil wat dit sal maak! Elke lewe is deur God beplan met die bedoeling om opgelei te word vir hoër diens hier en in die hiernamaals. En wat ookal in ons lewens gebeur, daar is voortdurend ‘n oorvloed van genade wat vir ons wag in die proses van ervaring. Maar hoe dikwels is ons blind daarvoor net soos Bileam blind was toe die Engel van God hom langs die pad ingewag het. Ons beraam planne. Ons lê snags wakker, koorsagtig en in angs en onsekerheid. Ons soek raad by hierdie en by daardie in plaas daarvan om te gryp na die oorvloedige genade, wat bedoel is om my behoeftes van die oomblik aan te spreek en my sieledors te les. Dit kan slegs gebeur wanneer ons dit deur kinderlike geloof en vertroue ons eie maak en uiteindelik in oorwinning kan triomfeer. Die woord oorvloedig beteken in sy Latynse oorsprong: Soos golwe van die see. Gaan staan op die strand en tuur oor die nimmereindige uitgestrektheid van die magtige oseaan. Dan mag ons nie vergenoegd wees met ‘n skulpie vol watertjies nie.Wat sal ons dan waarneem en tot watter wonderlike gevolgtrekking sal ons kom? Ons sal weer ons heerskappy in Christus ervaar. Indien ons opnuut besef dat ‘n troon en septer ‘n beeld van koningskap, krag en outoriteit weerspieël en ons dit ons eie maak, sal ons daardeur bekragtig en versterk word met outoriteit en heerskappy deur Sy Gees tot diep in ons sielewêreld. Dit bring oorwinning mee en sal ons met vrymoedigheid kan verklaar: Ons is meer as oorwinnaars deur Hom wie ons liefhet. As dit oorvloed beteken dan bevestig dit dat ons daagliks versadig word met alle goeie gawes en verbind dit ons tot elke goeie werk in Christus Jesus, ons Voorganger en die Voleinder van ons geloof ..! My gebed: Hemelse Vader, ek dank U vir die beproewinge en pyn wat uiteindelik bewerkers is ten goede. Gee my ‘n diepe begeerte na U heilgheid. Gee dat ek U genade in oorvloed sal ervaar vir my dienswerk, in my lewe hier op aarde asook in die hiernamaals. Amen.

Building wise - Hartlike welkom saving energy All buildings consume energy – either naturally or electrically. When this is wasted or unnecessary high, it leads to avoidable high costs in municipal accounts, and puts a strain on our available energy resources on a national level. The more eff icient a building is in using energy, the more you save to the benefit of all. Energy efficiency in buildings has three aspects: the amount of heat that enters the building (called heat-gain), the amount of heat leaving the building during winter (called heat-loss) and the amount of electricity used for lighting, cooking, hot water, heating and air conditioning. Since 10 November 2011 new legislation applies to all new buildings and new extensions, and will limit heat-gain, heat-loss and electrical usage. These regulations demand certain materials and building methods to be incorporated in new buildings, and are compulsory. The person doing your building plans must certify that the plans fully comply with these regulations. Don’t ask your building inspector or Building Control Officer to relax on these regulations: you will put him in a difficult position because by law he will just simply have to refuse your request. These regulations will also apply if you do renovations to an existing building over a certain extent. In this article however we will give some ideas on how you can save energy, improve your living comfort and save money, by applying a few basic improvements to your existing home. This is not an extensive list, and you can consult an expert professional for further ideas and specifications: Ensure that all your windows close properly. If not, add a sealing strip to all openers. These are cheap and easily installed. Install weather closures at all external doors. Install ceiling insulation to the whole building, including the garage. If you use a fiber blanket, it has to be approx 125mm thick. Ask a professional if you want to use a different method. (The R-value must be approx 2.30 -3.35). Install reflective foil laminates under your roof tiles or sheeting. Existing metal roof
sheeting can be sealed with sealing strips and pop-rivets. Put insulation around all your exposed hot and cold water pipes in the roof and elsewhere. Install a timer to your geyser and set it to warm your water for a limited time per day. Put a thermal blanket around your geyser. Consider installing a solar geyser. The installation cost is high, but you get a large part back as a subsidy from ESCOM. You will save on average 350 electrical units per month, and have hot water when load shedding occurs. The cost should be recovered within 4 years, where after you keep smiling to the bank while electricity rates go up. Gas or heat-pump geysers can also be considered. When replacing old windows, remember that steel and aluminum frames have the same heat properties (conductance). To improve temperature control you can consider using timber or PVCu frames. Put external louver shades in front of East and West facing windows. (These can be made adjustable from the inside). Internal window louvers are not effective, as the heat is already in the room when you try to stop it. Putting a tinted film on the windows will help for the heat in summer, but will stop sun energy entering in winter when you do want it. We would not recommend this as a solution; rather use other means of energy control. Use energy efficiency globes for lighting. WARNING: Energy efficient globes with a frequency of 50/60 Hz, could be dangerous to the health of persons with epilepsy or other brain diseases – consult your doctor on this issue. When changing your stove, consider an induction-plate stove or even gas. This will also bring about large savings on your electricity bill. Gladde bekkies Dit was met groot opgewondenheid dat die kleuters by Laerskool Tini Vorster hul eerste skooldag, Woensdag 13 Januarie, begin het. Ouers en kleuters is hartlik ontvang deur die onderwysers. Tasse het gebult van al die nuwe benodighede vir die skool en nie te praat van al die lekker eetgoedjies nie. Van trane was daar min sprake en die enkeles vir wie die oomblik te groot was, het die trane vinnig plek gemaak vir ‘n breë glimlag. Sommer vinnig is daar vrolike kinderstemmetjies gehoor met nuwe liedjies en versies. Die gr R klasse beleef hierdie jaar besondere groei en dit kan net toegeskryf word aan die hoë standaard van onderrig wat deur die skool aangebied word. Die kleuterklasse spog ook met ‘n slinternuwe baadjie, nadat die geboue en stoepe tydens die vakansie weer netjies geverf is. Die ouerkomitee beplan weer hierdie jaar interessante projekte om nog fasiliteite daar te stel.

Met groot opgewondenheid het Laerskool Hannes Visagie op Woensdag 13 Januarie hul nuwe klaskamer vir die graad RRR ingewy. Wat ‘n nuwe uitbreiding tot die skool is. Juffrou Riana Cornelius spog met ‘n pragtige kleuter groep van 22 kleuters wat vertel dat hul die jaar baie slim gaan word en ywerig is om te leer. Maar meeste van als wil hul net graag met al die nuwe maatjies speel.
