Perfectly situated & comfortable rooms Heidelberg’s ideal location on the N3 highway between Johannesburg and Durban. Only 50km from Johannesburg, 40km from the Johannesburg international airport, 50km from the Vaal river and makes it readily accessible to and indeed part of, the entire Gauteng, the heart land of South Africa. The town has excellent medical facilities, caters for all religious denominations, has 5 shopping centres and boasts an exceptional range of sporting and recreational facilities. Heidelberg sits nestled at the eastern end
of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, a large tract of land that is home to Gautang’s highest point, almost 2000 meters above sea level. Heidelberg developed as a typical rural Victorian town. Any buildings dating back to the period between 1890 and 1910 have been preserved. In addition, Heidelberg was home to AG Visser a well loved medical doctor and famous Afrikaans poet. His home only open to the public by appoint, can still be seen situated close to the main road through town and our neighbours!

Parents most at risk for colds & flu Readers braces themselfs for another onslaught of cold and flu infections this winter season, the biggest risk factor for catching the common cold is having children under the age 12. According to Mariska van Aswegen, from Pharma Dynamics, parents fall ill almost twice as much as anyone else. “Young children are a reservoir of germs and if they’re at crèche, school or anyplace else where they are around other children, they’re in a super-virus environment,
which makes them the perfect vectors for illness and for passing viruses around. A recent study conducted by the University of Utah’s School of Medicine confirms this notion. They found that families with two, three or four children have some type of virus present in their household just under 60% of the time, whereas childless households were only infected with viruses three to four weeks of the year. Each additional child in a household increased a family member’s risk of falling ill. Van Aswegen adds that parents who live with small children are 1.5 times more likely to be sick since children under the age of five tend to have at least one virus present in their mucus 50% of the time. “As we enter another cold and flu season it is imperative that those at risk, especially parents of younger children, give their immune systems a boost, whilst adequately protecting themselves from

avoid public transport as much as possible. “Besides eating your greens, getting enough sleep is another critical factor in fighting off colds and flu. Van Aswegen says keeping a clean and dust-free house is equally important. “It might also be worth getting an air filter to clean and purify the air in your home. “In truth, there is no cure for the common cold or flu, but time-deprived parents may benefit from supplements that can boost their immune system.
New life! Romans 6:6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. 7For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.8And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him. (NLT) Our fallen nature is subject to limitations, sickness, poverty and everything else the curse entails. Since we inherited this nature from Adam and Eve, we find ourselves wrought with the same sin-issue they experienced; Not only committing sin as isolated incidents of failure but being sinful by nature. In order to understand the complete work of redemption Jesus performed on the cross, we also need to understand how sin operates in our lives. Sin can be metaphorically described as a tree – the root system being the condition of our hearts, the way we think and consider things. Growing forth from the root system, we have different branches or areas and ways in which sinfulness can manifest. These are covered with ever changing leaves or emotions and ultimately fruit or then the behaviours that we see manifested on the outside. Considering this metaphor it becomes clear that we cannot deal with sin successfully simply by getting rid of the behaviour. The fruit is not so much our problem, the root is… In order to see new fruit, the whole tree has to be uprooted. This is exactly what Jesus did when He died for us on the cross. Romans 6:6 teaches us that Jesus died to break the power of sin over our lives. When we believe in Him, we become one with Him – as He is, so are we. Jesus is dead to sin and since we are one with Him, we also are dead to sin and free to embrace the
purpose of God in our lives. We maintain this position of freedom by deliberately doing the following things: • Consider yourself dead to sin (Romans 11:14; Philippians 4:8): The word ‘consider’ speaks of mulling over, thinking about, believing, bearing in mind. It is important for us to consider the fact that we are dead to sin and alive to Christ. We are not available for sin or anything connected to the old way of life to operate in or through our lives. • Do not allow sin to control the way you live (Romans 6:12-13; James 1:13; 1 Corinthians 10:13-14): The Bible cautions us to not allow any part of our bodies to become instrumental in service to sin. Since Christ has freed us, we can choose to resist sin and stand firm in our decision to serve God only. With every temptation that comes our way, we have the promise that God already provided the way of escape. • Apply yourself to Godly purpose (Hebrews 12:1): Very often the things God put inside us for pur pose become perverted and destructive when we are not living in purpose. We have to make sure to apply the very passion, attributes and actions that advanced darkness in the old life to establish righteousness in the new life. In Christ we willingly make ourselves subject to the Holy Spirit so as to do exactly what He wants us to do. Join us in this as we determine to not be conformed to the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:1) so that we may embrace and live in the beautiful space of God’s perfect will and purpose for us, serving no other but the Living God who lovingly set us free and called us to live the higher life, the new life in Christ!

sources of cross-infection. “I often get asked whether there is any sense in trying to stop the spread of infection by wearing a mask for example, but the best and most practical way of protecting yourself (and your family), is to practise proper handwashing techniques and to do so often. This could reduce the chances of catching your child’s cold by 30 to 50%. Another way is to stay out of waiting rooms in doctor’s off ices, emergency rooms and the shops, and to

Portable electrical heaters are highly wattage appliances that have the potential to ignite nearby combustible materials such as curtains, beds, sofas, papers, clothing and domestic flammable liquids such as paraffin, turpentine, methylated spirit, etc. If heaters are left unattended it can cause major fire destruction to properties and in extreme cases, loss of life. Safety is a consideration when using portable heaters. Most electrical heaters emit infra-red radiation heat that directly heats objects and people within their line of sight and are more efficient choice when used in the room for a few hours. They pose burn and fire hazards and they should be used with great caution. Buy a unit with a tip over safety switch, which automatically shuts off the heater if the unit is tipped over. Never run the heater‘s cord under rugs or carpeting. This can damage the cord, causing it and nearby objects to burn. Insure that the heater is placed on the stable flat solid horizontal surface. Drying of wet clothing using a heater is still far too common dangerous practice. During use, check frequently to determine if the heater plug or cord, wall outlet, or faceplate is HOT! If so, discontinue use of the heater, and have a qualified electrician check and/or repair the appliance.
Spruytstraat 26,

Be alert The Hawks have of late detected a trend in which people receive money in order to open bank accounts for people they do not even know. Investigations have revealed that most people have become the subjects of investigations after their accounts were found to have been used to either receive or transfer money which have been defrauded from other victims. Members of the community, for unknown reasons, agree to open bank accounts and there after hand over the bank card to the person who requested them to do so. Criminals who hack people’s online banking details use those recklessly opened bank accounts to distribute the money online and make withdrawals throughout the country. The Hawks are issuing a stern warning to people who open bank accounts not to give their cards and pin numbers to anyone, or
risk becoming accomplices to various crimes. Over 55 suspects, most of them Nigerian nationals have so far been arrested for crimes varying from internet fraud, and sim swap fraud. The account numbers used by these suspects to transfer money were found to have been legally opened by South Africans who voluntarily handed over their cards and pin numbers for a fee. Online dating has also become another way in which criminals use to defraud unsuspecting women. Those who visit those sites are advised not to deposit or transfer any money without verifying if they are chatting with a fraudster or a potential companion. Two women have recently been defrauded of R900 000 and R170 000 by Nigerian fraudsters who posed at hunks from Belgium and Scotland.

Funeral service The forum sought to address key issues experienced by funeral undertakers and outline the strides made by the Ekurhuleni municipality to provide efficient funeral services to the people by working together with the Ekurhuleni SA Funeral Practitioners Association. Pertinent challenges highlighted during the forum were the shortage of burial space, vandalism and theft of tombstones in most cemeteries, illegal burials at the unknown cemeteries, maladministration and emergency burials not following the cemetery and crematorium By-Laws. The funeral service providers unanimously raised their concern on the burning issue of the stringent municipal bylaws, shortage of burial space and storage facility as well as maladministration at cemeteries. Thabo Banda owns the Khulana Funeral Undetaker’s based in Katlehong and he is also a chairperson of SAFPA he said: “Over the years we have been working with the municipality in the service of burying people with dignity, however we feel that some of our challenges are not taken up with urgency”. “In Ekurhuleni particularly our general challenge is the shortage of storage facility for dead bodies, we earnestly urge our government to assist us with the provision of land for building a communal storage facility,” pleaded Banda. Over the past three years the City has not increased the burial tariffs, this is so that
residents can have access to affordable services not compromising their dignity in the process. Indigent burials remain the same as cremation tariffs are kept at all-time low of R500.00, despite the ever increasing oil prices. In conclusion Gungubele spoke sternly against the issue of vandalism in cemeteries. “It is disturbing to note that the issue of vandalism is perpetrated mainly by people who buy illegal graves thus undermining the story of the people buried in that space, I therefore urge the association to work with the municipality in being the custodians of these facilities for the benefit of our people”.

Local municipality approves budget The Executive Mayor, Cllr Molato Dickson Khanye tabled before Council the Integrated Development Plan as well as the annual budget for the institution for the 2016/17 financial year. The revenue amounts to R182 million while the expenditure is sitting at R208 million and the deficit is largely attributed to the R28 million non-cash item of depreciation. Municipal budgetary allocations are as follows; The Executive Council and Municipal Manager’s office has a budget of R 14.27 million. The Corporate Services Department is given R 12.8 million. Budget & Treasury on the other hand is allocated R 63 million. The Community Services and Public Safety Department has R 20.6 million while, Planning and Economic Development has R 3 million, and Infrastructure Services has financial muscles of R 94. 5 million. It is also imperative to note that the budget is cash backed by R3. 2 million and the capital budget of R 21.6 million.
Cash deficit reduction measures such as zero budgeting for catering, across the board reduction of travel and subsistence costs, restriction of overtime to essential services and paperless or electronic documentation will also be implemented. In line with the municipality’s efforts to move with the times in terms of technology and convenience to the consumers, the municipality is working on acquiring speed point payment services. Dipaleseng continues to engross itself in fruitful intergovernmental relations. Typical of this, is the finalization of the agreement with Sizanani over the Zenzele informal settlement land matter. Stemming from that, the municipality was then able to scrap together an amount of R 2 million to assist with the commencement of Town Planning processes for the forma-lization of Zenzele informal settlement in Nthoroane. The Department of Cooperative Governance & Traditional Affairs has made available an amount of R 17 million for
renovations of the municipal offices. The department will be sending consultants to the municipality to conduct inspections to ascertain the nature and extent of interventions required. The municipality has also identified a great need to attend to boreholes that are no longer functioning and require repairing. Engagements with the district municipality to gather their support on this matter will be conducted. The municipality has fully committed the total R 14.2 million on 2015/ 16 electricity projects to upgrade our electricity network through projects such as; The upgrading of feeder lines, Upgrading of the mv system and existing substation and also the construction of a new substation which will be a multi-year project. All these projects are done in alignment with ensuring that the municipality is able to meet the massive future electricity demands, especially considering the imminent new developments. Talking of new developments, Dipaleseng also has a few positives to revel like; the mini-hospital to be built by the Department of Health, the regional library by the Department of Culture, Sport & Recreation, Balfour Campus of Gert Sibande College, shopping complex/mall and the Richview housing development. All of which have been in high demand in our area for a very long time. The municipality has also commenced procurement processes for the mecha-nical works for the upgrading of the waste water treatment plant project in Grootvlei. This is one of the municipality’s major infrastructure projects and hopefully upon its full completion together with the reticulation, the community of that area will really feel its impact on their lives.
Second runner up Tanatswa Kamba, first runner up Joel Kidane and the winner Siphesile Mngoosini.

Vita Nova will also have a stand on the day and the public are welcome to make donations to them. Everybody is welcome. The health day are hosted at the back of the hospital at the St Mary’s entrance from 8h00 – 15h00. All staff working on that day during the health day are donating their hours of work to Vita Nova. They are working thus for free. We will of course provide refreshments to all staff working and all exhibitors on the day to say thank you for giving up time to give back to the community. We are very excited and are looking forward to the day.

Why men should ditch an evening tipple for rooibos? Most South African men can tell you what’s in every obscure alcoholic drink and where you can get the best one, but if there’s one drink men should know more about, it’s Rooibos tea. This June is National Men’s Health Month, which is celebrated across the country with screenings, health fairs and other educational activities to encourage men to make their health a priority. Men’s health has already shown a steep decline in recent years as chronic lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and cancer tightens its grip. Aside from cigarette smoking and poor diet, alcoholism is considered a leading cause of many of these debilitating conditions. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recently declared South Africa the drunkest country in Africa, consuming 27 litres of pure alcohol per capita annually, which is about 53% more than the rest of the continent. Ernest du Toit, spokesperson for the Rooibos Council says as more awareness is created around the risks associated with excessive intake of alcohol and carbonated drinks, men should look to healthier alternatives. “Although tea has become more popular among men, it still carries a bit of a stereotype, but let me tell you that real men do drink tea. Tough guys like Lion’s rugby player, Courtnall Skosan and other rugby legends, Adam Jones and George Lowe, as well as famous football ace, David Beckham, have all been seen knuckling back a mug of tea as if it is a single malt whisky. After water, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world and some cultures even consider tea as the manliest of beverages. Du Toit adds that one of the biggest benefits of drinking Rooibos tea, is the advantage that it holds over alternative beverage options. “Drinking the occasional beer, glass of wine, fizzy drink or fruit juice have their place, but it’s really about what you drink the most. If you drink Rooibos frequently, you’re going to reap the benefits of drinking a beverage with multitude health benefits, zero calories, no caffeine and one that is low in tannins, which also has the ability to rehydrate the body. It’s an important beverage, packed with nutrients that are vital for a healthy lifestyle.” If you’re still not convinced about joining
the man-tea revolution, the scientif ic evidence might help to change your mind. Here’s how Rooibos tea can benefit men in particular: Keeps high blood pressure in check Rooibos tea is known as a bronchodilator, which not only relieves respiratory conditions, but generally reduces high blood pressure, which can cause dangerous cardiovascular diseases. Enhances male fertility The high antioxidant levels in Rooibos tea could support healthy sperm and a higher sperm count. Improves heart health Quercetin, another powerful antioxidant found in Rooibos tea, has been linked to the prevention of a wide variety of heart conditions. It promotes HDL – good cholesterol and inhibits the LDL – bad cholesterol from adhering to the walls of arteries and blood vessels. This means added protection against various heart conditions, including arteriosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes. Builds and repairs muscle tissue Not only does Rooibos’ free-radical fighting antioxidants help you look and feel younger by slowing down the aging process, but they also assist with improved recovery after exercise, which means more muscle and less fat on your body in the long run. Reduces risk of diabetes One of the rare antioxidants found only in Rooibos tea, is Aspalathin which helps to balance blood sugar, reduce insulin resistance and increase glucose absorption by the muscles. Aspalathin also boosts the insulin production in the pancreas. This acts as a defensive shield against the development of type 2 Diabetes – one of the most widespread and dangerous medical conditions in the world. It will improve your performance at the gym or on the sports field Athletes would also benefit from Rooibos tea’s antioxidants that help to f ight inflammation and boost circulation and also helps to heal damaged muscle tissue. Rooibos also contains a high concentration of magnesium and zinc, which aids in the production of testosterone, which is important for the body’s endurance and ability to recover, as well calcium, magnesium and manganese, which are vital for bone health. Rooibos also helps the body to absorb iron, which enhances the
Winter sun winners We know, it’s cold, and there’s little else to dwell on. But what if we told you that it’s the perfect time to nurture two winter sun-loving plants that will brighten your beds and bouquets? Poppies and stocks, our winter winners, thrive in a cooler climate and love basking in mild winter sunshine. Picture the fresh fragrant mornings to come, infused with the heady scent and uplifting colours of your winter investment. These blooming buddies, reminiscent of a traditional Victorian country garden, stand upright and create troves of colour amongst what could otherwise be drab winter green foliage. Both flowers are popular with florists, and picking for the vase only encourages further blooms to sprout from your plants. The poppy’s bold colours that come in all shades of an African sunset, as well as an elegant pure white variety, are complemented by the creamy pinks and lavenders of the stocks.
delivery of oxygen to the muscles, which is critical in endurance racing. Lowers your risk of cancer Research at the Medical Research Council (MRC), found that both Green (unfermented) and traditional (fermented) Rooibos, significantly inhibits the growth of cancer cells, (Green more so than Red). The flavonoids found in Rooibos tea are famous for fighting and preventing cancer. “If you really want to commit to having a leaner physique and better health, choose Rooibos tea – it should be part of everyday health for men. Those that already drink it, do so because they understand the value of both the taste and health benefits that can be derived from drinking it,” says du Toit.

NIGEL/HEIDELBERG REKORD - ONLINE EDITION www.rekord.org.za
Why is sport important for scholars? We’ve been hearing for years that youth sports build character, persistence and teamwork. Their sport experiences gave them the ability to see past the diff icult coaches and teammates annoying and arrogant behaviour and to understand. They learn to deal with difficult people. They learn to cope under pressure. It is hard for parents to watch their kids play under stress, but that pressure is a breeding ground for growing the ability to stay calm when they grow up and life throws them curve balls. In youth sports, children can learn to keep working towards a goal, even when it feels hopeless. They learn not to give up. This type of persistence is only learned as one faces and works through challenges. If kids learn to ignore the negative voices in sports, they will be ready to do the same in life. They learn to strive to understand what their coach wants and they need to do that, even if he wasn’t clear in his instruction. This endeavour to try to understand others before judging will help them through many relational and workplace problems. When parents insist that their children confront the coach themselves, instead of jumping into the battle for them, they learn to express concerns to a person of authority. They become confident communicators because they fight the battle. They are able to give encouragement and compassion to others who can’t quite keep up in life. They learned this partly in the youth sports arena. The ability to appreciate the skills of others and support their talents makes them great team players, in the game, in the office, in the home. Your child can learn that he is defined by who he is, not by what he does. When integrity, honesty and hard work become the true measure of a champion, and not just stats, trophies and accolades, then children will not base their self-esteem on performance — in the game or in life — but on who they know themselves to be on the inside.
