Like it or not, Black Friday is here to stay!
While the end of November shopping frenzy is still relatively new in South Africa, local retailers, and consumers alike, are catching on quickly to the Black Friday trend. In fact, Facebook data shows that Black Friday is South Africa’s busiest online shopping day of the year. Black Friday originated in the US – its the Friday after Thanksgiving Thursday when retailers break with massively discounted merchandise. The term is historically known in the American retail industry as the day on which business began to turn a prof it (in the ‘black’) after having operated at a loss (in the ‘red’) since January. Black Friday is also regarded as the official start of the Christmas shopping season. According to Elizma Nolte, head of business marketing, Africa at Facebook, the day has become so prof itable for retailers, that it’s been adopted by other parts of the world where Thanksgiving
does not even exist. Many South Africans have taken to social media to complain that the deals aren’t good enough to be lumped into the Black Friday brand. However, a number of large retailers have promised discounts of between 50% – 80% for many items and products. Small and medium business expert at Sage, Anton van Heerden, warns that while taking part in Black Friday in South Africa may seem like a good business decision, it comes with potential pitfalls that need to be considered. The day has already become popular in South Africa, as has Cyber Monday, the following Monday (28 November 2016) when online shoppers are out in full force looking for tech and gaming bargains. He said that if you’re a business builder with a small retail operation, it’s a great opportunity to build some hype for your business on a day that consumers are particularly receptive to spending money. “On the other hand, your promotions and
marketing may be drowned out by the noise generated by retailers with massive budgets for promotions and advertising,” he warned. “Africa has an hour glass economy – with the rich getting richer, the poor getting poorer and the middle class being squeezed – people are going for deals just

Nigel Tuiste vir Bejaardes sluit 2016 op ‘n hoë noot af en spog met nuut geteelde gange en nuwe matte in hul saal. Die Alzheimer afdeling is ook opgegradeer wat tot groot voordeel is vir die Alzeimer pasiënte. Mnr Engelbrecht, bestuurder van die tuiste het op 18 November, gedurende die jaar vergadering, verslag gegee oor die werksaamhede by die tuiste die afgelope jaar. Groot onderhoudswerk is die laaste drie maande by die tuiste aangebring. Hierdie veranderinge is moontlik gemaak deur groot donasies vanuit die gemeenskap, bejaardes self asook hul naasbestaandes. Daar was ook twee erflatings waaroor die Tuiste hulle dank uitgespreek het. Die personeel is hartlik bedank vir hul harde werk en lojaliteit. Mnr Engelbrecht het ‘n sertif ikaat by hierdie geleentheid ontvang vir sy 15 jaar getroue diens. Dames van Nigel Rotary Ann’s het heerlik saaam gekuier en is bedank vir hul donasie en volgehoue besoeke en bederfies deur die jaar.

99 en geseënd Oom Piet Kruger spog soos min mense kan met sy 99ste verjaarsdag vieringe. Hy woon in die Tuiste vir Bejaardes en is nog springlewendig en hou al die ander bejaardes op hul tone. Oom Petrus Hendrik Kruger is gebore op 5 November 1917. Hy was bekend vir sy bouwerk. Oom Piet se stokperdjie is houtwerk en hy motiveer graag die ander mense deur speletjies te speel in die middae en skerts lekker dat almal skaterlag. Hy vertel dat hulle in Newlands gebly het en nog van gasstofies gebruik gemaak het. Hy sê die depressie jare was moeilike tye, mense het geld gehad, maar kon nie koop nie, tog was dit lekker tye. Hy het begin werk vir 1 pond 7 ‘n week. Oom Piet het 1 broer en 3 sussies gehad waarvan hy die enigste is wat nog leef. Hy spog met 7 kinders waarvan die oudste by geboorte oorlede is en sy oudste seun ‘n paar jaar gelede gesterf het. In 2016 het oom Piet sy dogter, Doeks, ‘n skoonseun, ‘n kleinkind, ‘n agterkleinkind, asook 2 van sy beste vriende aan

Sy kinders vertel dat hulle, hul pa respekteer vir die voorbeeld wat hy vir hulle stel en dat hy hul leer om te bid en in God te glo en na Hom uit te roep in alle omstandighede.

Transport campaign
Integrated Transport Month Awareness Campaign hosted by Lesedi Traffic and Heidelberg SAPS was held to sensitize bus companies operators, freight companies, taxi associations and scholar transporters on safety issues in the Heidelberg district. The main issue was the conduct, behaviour and attitude of taxi drivers on the road, obstruction of roads, drag racing and lack of respect of road traffic regulations and road users. The taxi violence or fighting for routes as
well as driving public transport while under the influence of alcohol were seriously condemned and discouraged in strongest terms. Appreciation and commendation to the taxi associations in Heidelberg for involving traffic and police in resolving challenges were received. Superindendent Monica Mkhize from Lesedi traff ic and Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate from Heidelberg SAPS thank all transport operators for attending this awareness campaign.

Disastrous results A woman was taken to hospital after she was raped by a gang before being dumped at a bus station. Though she was unable to remember the events of the previous evening, tests conducted revealed that she had been raped repeatedly. There was a trace of rohypnol in her blood. Rohypnol is presently being used as a date rape drug. It is a small sterilization pill which is used by rapists to drug their targets at parties. The drug makes the mind of the target or victim blank and sterilizes the victim that she does not conceive from the rape and the rapist need not to worry about having his identity revealed later by paternity test. The real bad news is that the drug’s side
effects are not temporary, they are permanent. Any female that takes it will never be able to conceive. The drug is administered by dropping it into the target’s drink and nothing that happened the night before will be remembered. Rohypnol dissolves rapidly and easily in drinks, leaving no taste and no change in color which makes it impossible to detect. These weasels can get this drug from anyone who is in the vet school or any medical university. It is about to break out big on campuses everywhere. Remember you also have sisters or might one day have a daughter. Trust no one and dont accepted drinks from anyone. Pour your own drink.

Media alert Following water restriction schedule across the City of Ekurhuleni, the City‘s Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department (DEMS) would like residents, industrial and business communities to be extra cautious in the prevention of structural fires. The initial reaction from members of the public on the usage of bucket brigade systems, hosepipes and other water extinguishing agents might be pretentious during scheduled time. From Emergency Services perspective, DEMS would like to sure case communities that these water restriction schedules, won‘t effect our primary response operations to fire related incidents. Contingency plans are in place to remedy the situation should the need arise. Municipal Water department has been engaged and are on standby for intervention as and when required. The schedule as communicated to all departments, officials will simultaneously be activated out as firefighters to remedy any water shortages during structural fires in the affected areas. In extreme cases, suction deep lifting from the nearest open water sources around the City will be put in place to shuttle water to the required fire scenes. Ons beloof om die vroulike geslag met eerbied en respek te behandel soos God dit van ons verwag. Ons bring hulde aan die vroue en dogters wie ons bystaan en versorg en die lewe ‘n aangename plek maak om in te woon. Ons wil ook meld dat geen gemeenskap suksesvol kan funksioneer, waar vroue nie toegelaat word om hulle besondere rolle te vertolk nie. Die Bybel leer vir ons dat manne die grondbeginsels van respek, soos geskrywe in 1 Tim. 2:8 “die manne op elke plek moet bid en heilige hande ophef sonder toorn en twis moet nastreef. Dis reël nommer een. Dan in Efesiërs 5 vers 28 en 29: ‘So behoort die mans hulle eie vroue lief te hê soos hul eie liggame. Wie sy eie vrou liefhet, het homself lief;

SAPS and Lesedi Traffic department held a integrated awareness campaign to educate, sensitive and provide road safety tips to grade 7 learners. Learners were sensitised that they should not allow strangers to give them a lift, accepting gifts from a stranger or engaged in substance and drug abuse, and to make sure that they observe the road safety rules always.

Een van die hoogte punte van die jaar was die uitstekende prestasies wat die dames met hul artikels tydens die kongres, te Meulstroom bereik het. Die dames spog met Hettie Botha 90% en spesiale prys, Anna-Marie Axer 83% en Desiree Human 80% vir hulle pastel sketse, Tini Möller 83% en spesiale prys vir haar poësie. Annelien Nel 83% vir romp en Susan Valentin 75% vir haar handwerk artikel. Die dames het meer geleer oor die bome van die jaar, die Knopiesboontjieboom, Wildevy en gewone Witbos. Martie en Michael Schuhardt van Bernina in Springs het die dames toegespreek oor die vordering in tegnologie en hoe die masjiene verbeter het sedert die 1930’s. Martie het met skyf ies getoon hoe die masjien vorms uit materiaal sny en blinkers op kledingstukke kan aanbring. Die hoogtepunt van die maand was die boeresport tydens hulle afsluiting. Budget 2017 On 26 October, in delivering his Medium Term Budget Policy Statement, Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan revised our country’s growth expectation to 0.5 percent this year noting that domestic structural constraints continue to limit our growth. The number of people employed in Gauteng has been increasing since 2010 reaching five million in 2015. Over the 2017 MTEF we will be spending just over R128.7 billion towards Education in our province. This will finance 2.3 million learners in the public schooling system. One million two hundred thousand learners are at no fee schools; 42 thousands learners in Special Schools and 141 thousand Grade R learners. Our spending on Health is cumulatively R127.2 billion over the 2017 MTEF. From 2014, we have managed to increase our revenues by 10 percent from R4, 9 billion to R5, 4 billion in 2015. In the last two and half years we have collected R13, 6 billion in own revenue. We welcome the recent Constitutional ruling on eNatis as this will allow us to load updated and recent license fees. Accordingly; CoGTA will receive an additional R70 million to use as follows: R20 million to assist in re-settling families displaced by recent floods; R14 million to assist the Emfuleni Local Municipality prevent sewerage spills into Vaal river system; R20 million to assist the Municipality of Merafong to begin repairs to the water pipeline for Khutsong; and R16 million to assist Rand West Local Municipality for electrification services to RDP houses in Mohlakeng. In addition the department receives a rollover of R27.7 million to fund the Provincial Disaster Management Centre. Development receives an additional allocation of R36.2 million, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is allocated R16 million is for Community Festive Games, Nelson Mandela Remembrance Walk and the Sports Awards. A further amount of R11.6 million is added to the department for the refurbishment and construction of infrastructure projects and the completion of the Provincial Archive Centre. The department also receives roll-overs of R 17.8m for the completion of community libraries. The Department of Human Settlements receives R50 million in new money to accelerate issuing of title deeds by paying outstanding municipal and security services. Department of Community Safety in its war on crime, we have added R20.7 million to fund the roll out the Memeza Community Alarm project to the elderly and child headed households, introduce ICT enabled oversight at 40 police stations. Economic Development: receives an additional R25.5 million to bolster tourism and the SMME support programmes. Agriculture and Rural Development receives an additional R53.7 million. R39 million is money from DBSA for the Gauteng Cleaner Production and Remediation Fund to be used for waste re-cycling projects. R35 million is allocated to the Gauteng Infrastructure Financing Agency to further fund the Project Preparation Facility to carrying out feasibility studies for infrastructure projects. The Department Education receives R260 million: R155 million is allocated to fill critical vacant posts and appoint teachers to cater for increasing learner numbers in the 2017 academic year. R105 million goes towards supporting schools to pay for municipal services resulting from price increases in electricity. In terms of roll overs: the department receives R157 million for the digital classroom programme; R18 million to deal with skills development for GPG; and R4.3 million for the National School Nutrition Programme Grant to cover a shortfall caused by high food inflation. The Department of Health receives an additional amount of R200 million: R143.7 million is allocated to the department to deal with their personnel pressure. The Department of Roads and Transport has an upward adjustment R609.7 million. The Department E-Government receives R36 million to fund shortfalls for payment to Sita for the GPG-wide Microsoft licences.
