Who is the guilty party? Recently the Kempton Express, Citizen and Beeld reported that a motorist in Kempton Park was awarded R951 313 after suffering damages from a pothole and as a result swerved into a brick wall. Metro and Municipal Councils should be held accountable for maintaining road conditions according to provincial and municipal statutes. The Lesedi town council’s casual attitude towards maintaining and repairing potholes in the Heidelberg area leaves much to be desired. It seems there are no funds to exercise basic maintenance because our roads are in shocking condition. Serious accidents and injuries are waiting to happen due to inaction. Residents should be made aware that when hitting a pothole and suffering damage to your vehicle or sustained injuries you have the right to claim damage repairs from council or metro via your Attorney. (see www.carinsurance.arrivealive.co.za) Unfortunately, the small claims court
doesn’t entertain cases against local / municipal / provincial authorities. In order to establish who you can claim from for pothole damage / damage as a result of road works you need to establish if you are driving on a National Road / Municipal Road. National roads are commonly identified as N1, N2 etc. These roads are the responsibility of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) whereas municipal roads would fall under the authority of the various municipal districts or the Department of Public Works were those roads are located. Claims for damages from potholes / road works on National Roads are therefore directed to SANRAL and from there to the specific contractor on that stretch of road. The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) confirms that claims are processed like any other car insurance claim if it could be proved that the damage occurred as a result of road works / pothole damage. On the Municipal roads– the road users
Body found It is alleged that while a nearby plot owner was cutting grass in the open veld, his dog ran to the river and barked continuously. Upon investigating, the man found a female body face down in the Blesbokspruit at Boschfontein Agricultural Holdings. The plot owner contacted the police, and the Northrand Water Wing Unit from Benoni was called in to remove the body. The deceased is unknown, has long grey hair, is about 1.7m tall and well-built. She was wearing black tights and a brown blouse with dots. Police are appealing to anyone who has any information about this case. BATSA records 54.4% decrease in water usage On March 14 British American Tobacco Southern Africa (BATSA) reported that it had decreased its water usage at its primary manufacturing facility at Heidelberg by 54.5% since 2011 following a significant programme of internal review and investment, interrogating each stage of the production process. Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, visited the facility to review the factory’s water conservation efforts, accompanied by Adv. Hatshatse, Chairperson of Rand Water Board, and Lesedi Municipality Executive Mayor Councillor LeratoFranscina. The tour was led by Soraya Benchikh, CEO of BATSA. The Minister commended BATSA, highlighting that the private sector is fast becoming a reliable partner in water
Wanted Heidelberg SAPS is looking for a Zuluspeaking man, aged between 42 and 45 years old to assist with an investigation of an armed robbery that occurred at the corner of Unie and HF Verwoerd Streets in Heidelberg CBD on February 2017. He was seen wearing a grey shirt and brown jacket, is of dark complexion, tall, and well-built. A security guard of Fidelity Guard Security Company reaction unit was on duty at a crime hotspot when he was approached by an unsuspecting man who got out of black BMW 7 series that was parked a few meters away. Two men remained in the vehicle. The man pretended to ask for directions to Pretoria. While the guard was still explaining, the other two men also approached. One of them produced a firearm robbed the security guard of his cell phone, firearm and car keys. They fled the scene. Major crime bust The Ekurhuleni East cluster achieved several successes through various group operations conducted throughout the cluster area the past week. A total of 130 suspects were arrested for various crimes. Stolen goods; murder; dealing in dagga; rape; housebreaking and theft; drunk and driving; exceeding the speed limit and illegal immigrants; armed robbery; possession of counterfeit money; and bribery. Ekurhuleni Metro Police arrested a 44-year old male driver of a white VW Polo after knocking down a 41-year-old man who was crossing the road. The victim was certified dead by Paramedics on the scene. Upon arrival of the Metro Police at the scene, they noticed that the driver of the Polo was intoxicated and was arrested. He will appear before the Springs Magistrate Court. In another incident, Ratanda SAPS opened a murder docket at Obed Nkosi phase 2. It is alleged that the deceased was at a party with friends. The exact timeline of his departure up to and until he was found dead with a knife wound in his neck just a few meters away from where the party was, is unknown. The deceased was identified as a 23-year old male residing in Hoko Street, Ext 1, Ratanda. Unfazed by farm attacks ANC Speaker in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Lentheng Mekgwe, has disallowed the DA’s urgent motion on rural safety and the rise in farm murders in the province by claiming that the MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele NkosiMalobane would not be able to debate the matter adequately. Another brutal farm attack took place in Westonaria which saw the victim of this crime admitted to hospital with serious injuries. Farmers and farm workers often fall prey to criminal syndicates who target the vulnerability of rural areas as they are often far away from any police station –
with neighbours up to a few kilometres away. In the motion that was denied, the DA called on the Premier, in conjunction with law enforcement agencies to reestablish specialised police units – such as the rural mobile police units, to ensure that people residing in rural areas are afforded the same safety and the security measures as those who reside in urban areas. Refusal by the Speaker to table this motion speaks volumes about the lack of compassion that this administration has towards those who are constantly under siege by criminal elements who prey on those living in rural parts of the province.

The first regional shopping mall Springs Mall at Blue Crane Eco Park showcased prime location and 170 carefully selected stores at the grand opening held on 16 March.
