New business chapter has dawned in Heidelberg Magda Maritz HEIDELBERG - An international business initiative recently sparked the interest of local business coach George Clarke. So much so that April 5 consequently became a monumental day for him, as this was the official launch of Heidelberg’s own Business Network International (BNI) chapter and the inauguration of its new members. BNI is an American franchised networking organisation with around 211 000 members in over 7800 chapters globally. Chapter membership is made up of small, medium and large businesses, including

representation from major f inancial institutions locally and abroad. Around 89 guests (including the 20 new members) attended the function which was hosted by Crime Stop and the Suikerbos Oord Retirement Village in Heidelberg. During the official proceedings, Mr Clarke welcomed guests and explained that BNI helps its members grow their businesses through a structured, positive and professional referral programme. “The programme ultimately enables businesses to develop meaningful, long-term relationships,” he said. Newly inaugurated members of BNI Elite

Björn Salsone, spokesperson and senior director consultant of BNI Johannesburg South Central attended the launch of BNI Elite Heidelberg on April 5, where he entertainingly indulged guests in the origin and history of BNI.

Heidelberg were then introduced and given two minutes each to deliver their business marketing pitch, which mostly resulted in fun and laughter among guests. BNI members are required to meet regularly to discuss business and support each other’s businesses by sharing referrals. One person from each business specialty is accepted into a chapter of BNI and all participants must represent their primary occupation. Participation in the chapter by members is key to the success of a group. Members can participate by bringing bona

fide referrals or visitors to their BNI chapter (weekly meeting). The best way to find out more about BNI and how it works is to attend BNI Elite’s next meeting on April 12 and see for yourself what it’s like. Meetings take place every Wednesday at 07:00 at the new lapa of the retirement village in Freeman Street and all local business owners are welcome. If you are interested in becoming a member of BNI Elite Heidelberg, contact George Clarke on 083 474 2212 (president) of Brescia Bianco-Badenhorst (vice-president) on 079 881 9835.

New members of Business Network International (BNI) Elite Heidelberg were inaugurated during the official launch of the chapter at Suikerbos Oord Retirement Village in Heidelberg on April 5.

GEHOORSENTRUM

A motion to lift water restrictions in Ekurhuleni was passed in council. During a Council meeting that lasted into the early hours of the morning, on April 2, the motion was adopted with some attempts to maintain an overall lower consumption of water in the Ekurhuleni metro. The motion, which was submitted to

Council in an unprecedented unity between the DA and the ruling party, called for the removal of the water restrictions and the penalties associated with over consumption with immediate effect. According to Cllr Derek Thomson, DA Shadow MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy in Ekurhuleni, the resolution that still calls for residents not to use other irrigation systems between 07:00 and 17:00 in an attempt to maintain at least an overall 15% saving of water consumption,

and penalties for over-consumption of water has been lifted. Residents are urged to use water wisely and continue the healthy habits that they have developed during the water restrictions to avoid a similar situation in the future. The Democratic Alliance will continue to force the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality (EMM) to respond quicker to significant water leaks and to take their own, agreed upon advice, and to only irrigate with grey water and only between the hours of 5pm and 7am.

WE DELIVER

Rev Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church under you not to do the same. Treat your staff with love and respect and they will do the same back to you and they (and you) will be more productive. Together with this the work environment becomes more joyful and people will “want” to come to work. Finally, what about when we look at church? Does the love of Jesus shine out of our life while at church AND outside of church. One of the biggest “turn-offs” for a person looking at turning to Christianity is when they see how some people live their day to day lives and then proclaim to be a Christian. Let us be honest, if you attend strip joints, get drunk, take drugs, cheat on the tax man, pay bribes or have an affair (to name but a few of the common problems) what example are you for Jesus? When we act like this we are doing everything except being someone who can be looked up to as a mentor for other Christians. Together with that this “life of wrong” creates a lot of stress because we are not at peace and generally do not sleep easily at night. My final challenge is to take 30 minutes to think of your life in your family, work place and church. Are you an example to everyone that Jesus can be proud of?

Most of the times when we are in conversation with others about our and their children we hear somebody making a statement that I would like to look at in my article today. The statement is this: “Your son/daughter acts just like you do” or maybe “the character of your son/daughter is the same as your character”. Many parents are very proud of these statements and it is correct to be proud. But I wonder how many of us realize that responsibility we have towards those who look up to us? The fact is that if we do good or bad the possibility is very high that our children are going to copy us because that is what they see as the “norm”. This “norm” becomes acceptable in the eyes of your child. Let us look at some examples. If you as parent swear, get drunk, take drugs or mess around with other women or men your child will see this as normal and will copy you. The sad truth is that when the children swear or get drunk etc then they are generally reprimanded and told that they are not allowed to do what they have just done – and yet you as parent are setting the example to say that “it is ok”. My first challenge to all parents is that we should try and live a life that we would like our children to follow (without exception). After all, the fact is that if we swear and tell our children not to swear they will refrain from swearing in front of us but when they are with their friends they will swear like a trouper because they want to “act big” - and that is copying you and that includes swearing. What about when we look at our work place. What example are you setting? Many who read this article are bosses or managers. If you come late to work you cannot expect the people under you to be on time. If you shout and scream to get things done you cannot expect the people who are working

Urgent reminder to business owners In its effort to kerb the sale of stolen property by reducing the market, SAPS is calling upon dealers of second-hand goods and pawn brokers to apply for the renewal of their business registration. This follows the release of the latest crime statistics in which aggravated robberies are highlighted as one of the most problematic crimes in the country. Another area of concern is the issue of cable theft, which has serious implications on the country’s electricity and telecommunication infrastructure. Every business owner (dealing in secondhand goods) are therefore urged to duly register under the provisions of the Second Hand Goods Act, 2009 (Act No 6 of 2009). All second-hand goods dealers who have registered from May 2012 onwards must, however, note that the f ive-year registration period is expiring soon and applications should be renewed. The Second-Hand Goods Act of 2009 came into effect on 30 April 2012 to regulate the business of dealers in second-hand goods and pawn brokering. The following process applies to all existing, registered second-hand goods dealers who must renew their registration: * application for renewal of registration must be made in terms of section 11 of the Act no more than 180 days and no less than 90 days before the expiry date of the existing registration; * application for renewal of registration must be made at the designated secondhand goods officer at the police station in which area the business is currently registered; * a renewal application must be made on a SAPS 601(e) form namely “Application for Renewal as an SHG Dealer/Recycler”. The SAPS 601(e) form must be accompanied by all relevant supporting documents, of which a checklist is available on the SAPS’s website;

* a renewal application may only be granted if the dealer/recycler shows that he/she still complies with the requirements of registration in terms of the Act; * if an SAPS 601(e) renewal application has been lodged within the prescribed period, the registration remains valid until the SAPS 601(e) renewal application is decided on and a new Certif icate of Registration has been issued to the secondhand goods dealer; * should a registered second-hand goods dealer decide not to apply for renewal, his/ her registration will terminate upon the expiry date of the current Registration Certificate, and he/she will not be allowed to continue dealing in second-hand goods. Not applying for renewal within the registered timeframe will be regarded as an immediate termination of registration; * application for the renewal of registration is free of charge. Local dealers (Heidelberg and Nigel) can access www.saps.gov.za for more information. The press release was issued by Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

Die ablusiegeriewe by Nigel Stadsaal soos in huidige toestand.

CRIME PREVENTION INTRODUCTION We live in a violent and dangerous society, and at a time in this country‘s history when unemployment and other factors have led to an unprecedented increase in crime. The criminal element has little respect for the rights, property and lives of law-abiding citizens, and in many of the larger cities rape, theft, assault and other violent crimes are everyday occurrences. A weak economic climate and the associated unemployment are also affecting the level of crime. The hard reality is that crime has become part of our lives, and that no one is immune to the threat of the criminals who walk our streets. Despite repeated warnings from the police, who undertake regular crimeprevention campaigns, it seems as if a large number of South Africans are unconcerned about this situation, and are doing very little to protect themselves, their family or their property. As a result they become prime targets for criminals, who are by nature cowards and would rather prey on those who are vulnerable and unprepared. Busy week for SAPS Heidelberg HEIDELBERG – Two male suspects were arrested for robbery and assault (grievous bodily harm) on April 1. A 30-year-old man was allegedly walking along Flammik Street at Boschfontein Plots around 18:00 when he was confronted by two males who demanded money and his cell phone. One of the suspects produced a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. Police responded to the incident, and the victim was treated by paramedics. After describing the suspects, Police went searching in the area. Const Tsheko Motaung and Const Nndwakhulu Singo noted two men walking along Kwikstertjie Street, and as they approached, the men started running. The police constables, however, managed to apprehend the suspects and conducted a body search, which revealed the victim’s stolen money and cellphone. They were arrested and charged and will appear in Heidelberg Magistrate Court soon. According to Capt Thivhulawi Tshilate, an unknown male (aged between 23 and 28 years) was killed after being hit by a car on the N3 Freeway. The incident occurred around 18:58 on April 1 near the Jacobs Street off-ramp. The deceased is slender with short hair and a light complexion. He is 1,7m tall and was wearing a brown trouser with green and black underpants, a green short sleeve shirt, black secret socks and brown shoes. Police are asking anyone with information on the deceased to call the police station on 016 341 0361. Heidelberg detectives arrested three security guards for business burglaries on March 28. This follows two burglaries at Bradlows Furniture in three days. The burglar and roller doors were cut open with a cutting torch, allowing the suspects entrance to the shop. Six flat screen television sets, two Hi-Fi systems and other furniture with an estimated value of around R43 884,00 were stolen during the first robbery and approximately R35 000,00 worth of items during the second. The investigation was lead by Capt Senzosenkosi Shabane, Capt Mphegolle Maphutha and W/O David Moloi, who arrested the two security guards shortly after the burglaries. The suspects, aged 27, 30 and 46 years respectively, were arrested while on duty on April 3. Further investigation is still ongoing in order to link other possible suspects. SAPS Heidelberg is appealing to the public to come forward with any information relating to the burglary at BRADLOWS Heidelberg. Information can be provided anonymously to Capt Shabane on 016 341 0343 or 016 341 0361 or contact SAPS Crime Line on 08600 10111. In another incident, a 66-year-old cyclist died after collapsing. Capt Tshilate said the man was cycling with his wife and colleagues in the Houtpoort Farming area when he told them he suddenly felt tired and lacking stamina. He requested that they take a rest along Plein Street outside Rensburg. While sitting down, he collapsed. Paramedics were called to assist, and despite continuous efforts to resuscitate the man, he was declared dead on the scène. A six-year-old child was reported to have been raped by a 23-year-old man on April 2. According to Capt Tshilate, the victim informed her mother that she had been sexually assaulted. The community went out in search of the suspect, and he was later apprehended by the police. He will appear in Nigel Magistrate’s Court.

Thousands marched against Zuma Scores of people have descended on Church Square on April 7 in support of the Save SA March, in a desperate call for President Jacob Zuma to step down. At midday, march organisers said they had recorded over 25 000 people already at the meeting point in Pretoria’s Church Square. Supporters from all walks of life and political affiliations were seen at the assembly point. Some supporters were dressed in Save SA’s green Tshirts, while others wore DA and EFF colours.

Why pay more to advertise your business?

Riot police and Tshwane metro police were monitoring the march. According to the organisers the march went peacefully except in Pietermaritzburg where ANC supporters attacked other parties. Police were quick to control the situation.

April sees drop in Gauteng Liquor Board toothless without new petrol price Motorists can stress less this month, as the department of energy has recently released the official petrol price changes for April 2017, which came into effect on April 5. Fuel prices declined across the board last week, as the strength of the rand (prior to the recent crash due to the cabinet reshuffle) had a positive impact on the basic fuel price. The average international product prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin also decreased during the period under review. The inland cost of 95 ULP and LRP fuel dropped by 24 cents per litre, while 93 ULP and LRP by 22 cents. The wholesale price of diesel decreased by 11 cents per litre, and the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin dropped by 49 cents. These decreases came despite a 30 cents increase in the fuel levy and a nine cents increase in the Road Accident Fund levy, which came into effect on April 1.

Scam alert Police have warned residents to be aware of the latest security scam, where a group of people randomly visit homes in the area (Heidelberg and Nigel), pretending to be officials from the Department of Home Affairs. They carry documents that contain the department’s official letterhead and claim to be confirming and validating ID’s for the next elections. Be ware that these people are robbing homes and the Department of Home Affairs confirmed that there is no such official initiative. Should you encounter these groups, do not let them in and contact your local police station.

Chamber of Business meeting Members of Heidelberg Chamber of Business will meet tonight (April 11) at 19:00 at The Secret Garden in Jordaan Street. The meeting will include a training session to maximise business marketing and members of the public are welcome to attend. For more information visit www.heidelbergchamber.org or phone George Clare on 083 474 2212 or 083 456 3795.

licensing legislation The Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB) has revealed that it doesn’t have the power to revoke existing liquor licenses, nor does it have the ability to take seriously any objections that are raised as to the renewal of existing licenses without new legislation. This was revealed to the Gauteng Economic Development Portfolio Committee after the DA had requested that GLB is summoned to appear before the committee to provide an explanation as to why there has been an increasing number of complaints about licensing and the growing number of illegal operators across the province. The GLB explained to the committee that almost half of all liquor traders in Gauteng don’t possess legal liquor licenses and in some areas – such as Cosmo City, only one in four premises have a permit. The board expressed concern that unless the current Liquor Act is replaced by legislation that has been mooted for some years already, the situation will continue to spiral out of control. Delays in the processing of new applications, fake licenses, and illegal establishments mushrooming across the province will remain the order of the day if Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Lebogang Maile continues to wring his hands on the matter. MEC Maile must expedite the process of ensuring that this legislation is brought before the Gauteng Legislature to resolve these issues, not only to ensure that illegal operators are brought to book, but to make sure that legitimate businesses can begin to trade sooner rather than later.

Corruption concerns At a meeting of the Gauteng Provincial Executive Council last week, strong concerns were raised about corruption in the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport and its entity, G-fleet. It has been common knowledge amongst Transport Portfolio Committee members, and the public at large, that corruption triumphs at numerous testing centres across the province. Evidence of this has been forwarded to the Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi on a continuous basis - with many empty promises made of action to be taken against individuals who brazenly solicit bribes. This is in conjunction with the evidence of corruption which has now been presented to the Provincial Executive Council. The concerns expressed about corruption and mismanagement within the Department of Roads and Transport have been on the table for many years without any action being taken. The Provincial Executive Council’s concerns may just be the wake-up call the DA and other parties have been urging for. MEC Vadi can no longer escape his responsibility to take action against those who are abusing the system for their own gain. The ball is now in his court.

We would like to hear from you!

THE ROTARY CLUB OF NIGEL MATHS INCENTIVE SCHEME. The Rotary Club of Nigel has this year embarked on a “Maths Incentive Scheme” for students in the three high schools of Nigel. The scheme commences at grade 9 level, and continuous through to grade 12. The scheme rewards two students selected by the school teachers of each school, each year, per grade One best improver and one runner up, except for grade 12, there will only be one top student. Once the scheme is fully operational, there will be 7 students per school, totalling 21 students in the three high schools benefiting from the scheme annually. The Rotary Club of Nigel believe that by implementing the scheme, and encouraging students to study maths, this will not only benefit the students in whatever occupation they may follow in their future carreers, but will also ultimately be to the benefit of South Africaís future. The sustainability of the scheme is totally dependent on the availability of finance. Therefore, the Nigel Rotary club would welcome any corporate or individual contributions towards theî Maths Incentive Schemeî fund. The students which receive the awards will be chosen by the participating schoolís teachers, which is why it is of paramount importance that we receive the co-operation of the teachers and management of the participating schools Should anyone wish to contribute towards this scheme, or require further information, please call any of the following:Maurizio Pellizzon, Tel: 083 411 2282 Con Keyser, Tel: 082 888 2563 Mino Carniel, Tel: 082 555 5320
