Restourant sluit weens boikot Magda Maritz magda@rekordpaper.co.za Na meer as ‘n maand van volgehoue boikot van die Spur konsessie-restourante deur blanke Suid-Afrikaners, kan daar nie meer ontken word dat ‘n groot sakeonderneming die druk voel nie. Die boikot volg na ‘n insident wat in Maart by die Texamo Spur in Krugersdorp plaasgevind het, toe ‘n man en vrou van verskillende ras in ‘n argument betrokke geraak het. Kort na die voorval het die hoof uitvoerende beampte van Spur, Pierre van Tonder, in ‘n persverklaring gesê dat die betrokke man sal nooit weer by enige van die landwye Spur-takke welkom wees nie. Dit het ‘n media-herrie veroorsaak en mense het hul tot sosiale media gewend, waar hulle ‘n beroep gedoen het op blanke
Suid-Afrikaners om die restourant te boikot. Luidens onlangse beriggewing op Front Nasionaal word daar beweer dat Spur se omset in Gauteng sedert die omstrede insident met 16% en in die Wes Kaap met 2,6% gedaal het. Die impak van die boikot het tot gevolg gehad dat talle restourante, waaronder Nigel se Golden Buffalo Spur, verplig was om hul deure permanent te sluit. Meer as 30 werknemers van Golden Buffalo Spur is skielik sonder inkomste gelaat en restourant eienaars soos Chantel Low ly miljoene rande se skade. Rekord het Chantel genader, maar sy het haar kommentaar vir later gereserveer.
Dit blyk uit beriggewing op sosiale media dat menige eienaars die Spur hoofkantoor (en by implikasie Van Tonder), vir die swak hantering van die kwessie blameer, aangesien hulle nie by die voorval of Spur se hantering daarna betrokke was nie. ‘n Voormalige werknemer van Golden Buffalo Spur Natasha Steenkamp, het aan Rekord gesê sy is verpletter nadat sy haar enigste inkomste verloor het. Sy en haar dogter het by die plaaslike restourant gewerk tot dit op 7 Mei finaal gesluit het. Sy sê die volgehoue boikot het honderde werknemers en restourant eienaars landwyd se lewens verwoes. “Die mense wat die boikot so getrou ondersteun het, besef nie die ware implikasie daarvan
nie. Ja, die nasie het saamgestaan, maar wat is die gevolge? Ek is my inkomste kwyt. Ek weet ek nie hoe ek my finansiële verpligtinge aan die einde van die maand moet nakom nie en werk is moeilik bekombaar” het sy aan Rekord gesê. Rekord het Pierre van Tonder op 9 Mei genader, maar hy was glo uitstedig en nie vir kommentaar beskikbaar nie. Dit is nie duidelik presies hoeveel Spur restourante al gesluit het nie en die inligting kon nie met Van Tonder bevestig word nie, maar op sosiale media word gespekuleer dat bykans 30 restourante reeds weens die volgehoue boikot gesneuwel het.

Various stakeholders attended the launch which took place at the taxi rank in Shalimar Ridge. Namola is a road safety application (app) which is designed to improve alert and despatch times to under a minute of various law enforcement agencies, including emergency services. The service is made up of three elements namely a user app for citizens to request assistance, a tablet f itted in response vehicles for quick alerts and response, and a call centre operation based at the relevant despatch off ice to validate alerts. The project has been operational within Tshwane Metro Police Department for over a year. Namola is revolutionary in that it allows citizens to use their smart phones to share their GPS coordinates directly with the nearest Metro Police vehicles. The first available officer is then directed to the citizen’s location while being monitored by the control room. The Namola app reduces the average
dispatch time for police vehicles from over two minutes 30 seconds down to 13 seconds, which is a vast improvement in speed. The goal is to provide South Africans with an easy-to-use tool to assist them in the fight against crime. During the launch of the app, councillor Maloka said a new day has dawned for Lesedi and that Namola can be downloaded free of charge anywhere in South Africa, but currently only works in Gauteng. Namola provides data analytics that allow for police to identify crime hotspots and deploy resources accordingly. Furthermore, Namola allows for citizens to rate police responses, and for police to rate citizen call-outs, ensuring there is a virtuous feedback loop and allowing police management to improve the quality of service delivery. In this way you approach the problem with a positive attitude in that you have decided and put into place all that is necessary not to fail. You have thought through the situation and have decided that the world is NOT going to win – and then it becomes quite easy to say “No”. The only possible problem that I see in this is that your value system will need to be right. You are not going to win if you try to change your attitude towards something that you don’t believe in. Again, in my mind, if you base your values on Biblical principles you CANNOT go wrong. Think through your challenges, think of what is right based on Biblical values and then have a change in attitude. Then you WILL be able to say NO…..

I was chatting to a colleague last week and he shared that he had lost 13 Kg and was feeling great. I asked him what he was doing to lose the weight and he answered “I am saying NO”. I asked him to explain and he told me that when he looks at carbs he says “no thanks” and when he is looking at anything with sugar in it he also says “no thanks”. He then added something that struck home with me. He said “it is as simple as that”. After we had parted our separate ways I thought how profound his statement was and also how we all could learn from his attitude towards that which, in his mind, is wrong. I started thinking of all the times that I had tried to stop various things (all be it sugar, carbs, anger, unforgiveness…. The list goes on and on). I then started to analyse why it was that I had failed so many times and he had got it right. My conclusion was that it is all in the mind – it was his ATTITUDE that made all the difference. So here was what I learned from this. I think that if we try to stop doing something or try to change how we are doing certain things we will struggle if we take on the project without a mind-set change. You see this colleague thought about his problem (overweight and tiredness) and then looked at the various options on how to get this right. Once he had decided what the best solution was, he made a conscious mindset change and his attitude towards what he was about to do changed. What I am trying to say is that a mind-set

Christaan Visagie het op 4 Mei in Nigel Streekshof op aanklagte van verkragting van ‘n minderjarige verskyn, waar hy skuldig gepleit het. Die voorval het op 2 April te Marievale (Dunnottar) plaasgevind. In sy verklaring het Christiaan gesê dat hy die betrokke dag saam met familie by vriende in die woonbuurt gekuier het, maar dat hy iets by die huis wou gaan haal. Die sesjarige slagoffer het glo gevra of sy saam met hom op sy fiets kan ry, waarop haar ouers ingestem het. Verder in sy verklaring het Christiaan gesê dat nadat hy die meisie op die fiets gelaai het, hy aan onsedelike dade begin dink het. Hy het toe na ‘n nabygeleë veld gery, waar hy haar verkrag het. Hy is later deur lede
van die gemeenskap vasgetrek en die polisie is ontbied. Hy was sedertdien in aanhouding. Tydens die uitspraak het streekslanddros Mnr Juan Voogt, gesê verkragting van kinders is een van die ernstigste misdrywe in die samelewing en dat dit ‘n sinnelose daad met geen finansiële voordeel vir die beskuldigde is nie. Hoewel Christiaan ‘n eerste oortreder is, was dit nie genoegsaam om ‘n verminderde vonnis te oorweeg nie. Mnr Voogt het bevind dat hoewel daar dwingende en wesenlike omstandighede bestaan om ‘n verminderde vonnis te regverdig, ‘n langtermynvonnis in dié geval gepas sou wees om sodoende ‘n boodskap aan ander oortreders en die gemeenskap uit te stuur. Christiaan is tot 25 jaar tronkstraf in ‘n
maksimum fasiliteit gevonnis en is onbevoeg veklaar om ooit ‘n vuurwapen te besit. Die hof het verder gelas dat sy naam in die register van seksuele oortreders aangeteken word en indien hy mettertyd vir parool oorweeg mag word, moet die klaagster (haar voogde/ouers) in die saak geken word. Hy dien tans sy vonnis by die Modderbee Korrektiewe Sentrum uit.

Man dies after stabbing incident
Scores of bystanders gathered at the scene where a 26 year old male was stabbed by a 19 year old. The incident occurred around 15:30 on April 20 at The Angelo Mall. Paramedics arrived at the scene where they found the victim laying on the ground. He sustained several stabbing wounds to the head and was in a critical condition. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The 19 year old suspect attempted to flee the scene, but he was apprehended by members of the community. Police are investigating a murder case.

Vrywilligers verbonde aan die SuidAfrikaanse Vroue Federasie (SAVF) Nigel sit hul onvermoeid voort in hul taak om na behoeftige gesinne in die gemeenskap om te sien. Ten spyte van ‘n tekort aan fondse en donasies, ontvang behoeftige gesinne wat by die organisasie se voedelskema geregistreer is, steeds elke maand ‘n voedselpakkie en klere. Tydens die kospakkie-dag op 4 Mei, is Moedersdag gevier om erkenning aan al die mammas te gee en ‘n spesiale boodskap is deur Nathan en Laura Roberts gelewer. Nathan en Laura is Amerikaanse sendelinge wat vir die afgelope twee jaar in Suid-Afrika woon en werk en is aktief by organisasies soos die SAVF betrokke.

Suspects nabbed Elderly saved by God’s grace for truck hi-jacking Three suspects were arrested by SAPS Nigel, following a truck hi-jacking that occurred in Balfour on May 9. According to police spokesperson Sgt Nellie Dwaba, police reservist W/O Herkie Stephens received a telephone call from a tracker company, who reported a possible hi-jacking in the area. R/W/O Stephens traced the hi-jacked Mercedes Benz truck to a location in Nigel and alerted the police. He then followed the truck’s location to a four-way crossing near Alrapark, where he found a second truck with Maputo registration and three men in process of attaching a trailer (fully loaded with steel) to the horse. R/W/O Stephens proceeded to search the Maputo truck which was presumably used in pulling the hi-jacked truck and trailer. While waiting for the police to arrive, the suspects made their way back into their truck and fled the scene. Through swift reaction and assistance by members from Nigel Metro Police, the suspects were apprehended shortly thereafter. They were arrested on the charge of possession of stolen goods and will appear in Nigel Magistrate’s Court soon.
Magda Maritz magda@rekordpaper.co.za Her main concern while being tied up and threatened by a group of armed men during a house robbery, was for the safety of her grandchild, but prayer is what kept them alive and unscathed. This is how 92 year old Winnie Breytenbach and her friend Yvonne Stapelberg described their ordeal and the events that unfolded on the morning of April 21 at a secure complex in Ferryvale. Winnie told Rekord she was busy in the garage after Yvonne left to run some errands in town. She looked up and noticed an unknown car at the entrance gate, but having trouble with her eyesight, Winnie thought it might be her friend
returning from the shops. Minutes later, four armed men approached her and grabbed her by the shoulders. She was shoved inside the house where she and her grandson were tied up with cable ties. “They started throwing everything out and continuously asked us where the safe and the weapons are,” Winnie said. “I told them I was just visiting a friend and that I don’t know anything.” After ransacking the house, the suspects locked Winnie and her grandson inside a bedroom. Meanwhile, Yvonne arrived back from the shops and walked straight into one of the robbers in the kitchen. He clutched her mouth with one hand and told her to keep quiet. Yvonne was also tied up and shoved inside the bedroom with Winnie and her grandson. Yvonne told Rekord the men continued searching the house and took some of her jewellery. They later returned with the garden worker, whom they found outside and tied him up with them. “I assume they went to the neighbour’s house then, because after a while we heard screams. We realised it was the domestic worker from the adjacent house and this is when we started praying aloud,” Winnie said while explaining how a sudden calmness overcome her. “I could hear a voice telling me ‘be still and know that I am God’ and I feared nothing in that moment.” Winnie said she just knew they were going to survive the ordeal. After the suspects fled the scene, Yvonne managed to free herself and phoned Winnie’s son. He alerted the police and members from Nigel CPF, who immediately responded to the robbery. It was later discovered that the robbers accessed the premises by lifting the iron gate of its railing. The suspects are still at large and the police are investigating a case of armed robbery. Winnie wanted to express her gratitude towards Nigel CPF and wrote the following letter: “I would like to thank the brave members of Nigel CPF who rescued me, my grandson and my friend after the armed robbery. They reacted so quickly after the call for help at midday on April 21. If not for their swift reaction, things could have turned ugly. Their bravery is appreciated more than I can put into words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

She is thankful to be alive and said it was faith in God that protected them. This truck with Maputo registration, was used in a hijacking of a Mercedes Benz truck and trailer in Balfour on May 9. SAPS Nigel arrested three suspects soon after the incident occurred.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has made an urgent appeal for South Africans to step forward and donate blood to save lives. SANBS National Marketing Manager Silungile Mlambo said the national blood supply is currently critically low. “We need active donors, lapsed donors and potential donors to stand together right now to bolster the national blood stock,” Mlambo said. “Many people in life-threatening situations require blood. To meet the daily demand for blood, SANBS must collect an average of 3 000 units of blood a day. Each unit of blood can be separated into its various components including red cells, plasma and platelets, and given to patients with different needs. A unit of blood is also used to help advance the science of bloodrelated medicine worldwide if it is used for research purposes. To become a safe blood donor, you must weigh at least 50kg, be between the ages of 16 and 65, in good health, lead a sexually safe lifestyle, consider your blood safe for transfusion to a patient and commit to donating blood regularly. SANBS assured that one can’t be infected with the HIV when donating blood. Needles and finger prick lancets are new, sterile and used only once. Where can I donate blood? The mobile donor centre in NIGEL is scheduled for June at SAPS Nigel conference centre/lecture hall. However, due to last minute cancellations of mobile drives, SANBS requested donors to contact its call centre on 0800 11 9031.

NUMSA to fight UCW retrenchments Hundreds of disgruntled members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) took to the streets in public protest at the premises of Union Carriage and Wagon (UCW) in Vorsterskroon last week. The protest follows allegations that around 350 employees have been retrenched by UCW over the past year or two. Addressing the media outside the UCW premises, NUMSA spokesperson Simphiwe Dlamini said the company should feel the brunt of the strike, as many lives are affected by the retrenchments. “Although the matter was brought before the bargaining council, no agreement has
been reached between the parties yet,” he told Rekord. Dlamini continued by saying that apart from retrenchments, UCW would from time to time, employ people within its own structure (internally) without sourcing skilled labourers from the local community. “Our demands among others, are the reinstatement of those people who were retrenched and UCW should also support the local community by sourcing skilled and semi-skilled labourers,” he said. The allegations made by Numsa members could however, not be conf irmed nor denied, as Rekord still awaits an official response from UCW.

Legs burn in Route 42 Nigel Rugbyklub begin seisoen op hoë noot Cycling Club MTB It was a day, all about mountain biking when Route 42 Cycling Club in Nigel, presented its 12th annual mountain bike challenge at the Italian Club in Nigel on Sunday May 7. The MTB challenge, which consists of three categories namely a 75km (marathon), 35km (half-marathon) and 10km (fun ride), presented cyclists of all ages (a choice of racing the tough and technical marathon event), ride the challenging 35km half marathon or just join the social riders and kids on the 10k fun ride), sometimes challenging, yet scenic routes on the outskirts of town. The ample PowerAde and Coke stops not only kept the thirsty riders properly hydrated, but also provided moral support and a word of encouragement to get the riders motivated to the end of the race. Rendered with perfect weather conditions, organisers of the (Nic Bottari Toyota) / Route 42 MTB challenge could not ask for anything better, and neither could Henry Uys who claimed his fourth consecutive title in as many years when he crossed the finished line in a record time of 2:49:33. It was however, a heartfelt battle of endurance and willpower between Henry and Edwill O’Neill (who was able to stick with Henry for most of the route until the big infamous “Wilkie se bulkie” separated the two and gave the eventual winner a slender two minute lead over the younger second placed rider O’Neil, towards the end of the race.) Adolph Krige ended third
overall. Bronwynne Swanepoel was simply in a class of her own and the fact that she was also a masters entrant made it that much more special as she completed the 75km marathon in a fantastic time of 3;19 more than twenty minutes in front of second placed Veteran Irma Guy. All told it was simply one of the best races in Gauteng, young and old were only too eager to confirm how much they enjoyed the route and fantastic support received during the race. “Route 42 Cycling club has excelled yet again this year in presenting a near flawless mountain bike race,” was the official report from the CSA National Race Commissaire, Mr Stefan Colmanet. Other results are as follows: 75km Ladies: First place - Bronwynne Swanepoel; second place - Irma Guy; and third place - Mone Pieterse. 35 km Men:First place - Brendon Myburg; second place - Aaron Heyneke; and third place - Simon Rollo. 35km Ladies: First place Casandra Singerland; second place - Maureen Vosloo; and third place Samantha Erasmus. Route 42 Cycling Club expressed their gratitude towards the Nigel community for their support and assistance, especially the surrounding farms who without the use of their land, could not present the awesome event with the likes of “heartbreak hill and “prison break” it just wouldn’t be the Nic Bottari Toyota Route 42 MTB Challenge.
Nigel Rugbyklub se o/21’s en eerstespan het verlede Saterdag (6 Mei) vir groot opwinding gesorg, toe hulle die manne van Sasolburg Rugbyklub by John Vorster Stadion gepak het. Die o/21’s het die veld eerste opgedraf en met ‘n telling van 15-5 geseëvier. Die tweedespan het egter die knie gebuig en hul wedstryd 21-3 verloor, maar Nigel se onstuitbare eerstes het hul sege voortgesit en die opposisie met ‘n telling van 33-17 geklop.
