School violence
Newspaper headline over the past few years would reveal that reports of crimes constitute a significant proportion of daily news fodder. Violent behaviour in young people results from a complex interaction of risk and protective factors in different environments and over time, which influence how children learn behaviours. Children are exposed to violence within their families. Schools are important arenas for child socialisation and tend to become more important as children move into adolescence. Children who achieve poorly at school, who drop out of school, who are not committed to school, who have low educational aspirations, and who change schools often are more likely to engage in violent behaviour. A child’s valuing of education is likely to be influenced by the value attached to schooling by his parents, but is also affected by the characteristics of schools themselves. Another prominent socialising influence for young people is the mass media. Children are exposed to violent images on television
and live in an environment that does not have strong anti-violence norms. Families have the greatest exposure to films on television, followed by DVDs, videos and finally the cinema. Scary movies could directly affect a persons emotions for long periods. Children find ways of watching inappropriate material without their parents’ knowledge. This clearly shows that the media has an effect on children. Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said the issue of violence at schools was a societal one. “It requires everyone to play their part in resolving it. Parents need to teach their children that there are other ways of resolving the conflict.” Parents need to teach the children the values that focus on respect for self, others and the environment which they live in. Disciplinary actions need to be taken against all involved in violent incidents,” Mhlanga urged. Schools should be places of safety, yet pupils all too often witness violent incidents on the school ground or via social media.

When we look at the life of Jesus we see many people who are critical to His ministry yet they are never in the highlight of all the activity. Think of the disciples, there were 12 disciples yet we do not hear all the work that they were all doing. Jesus called them and so we know that they were needed and we know that they had a role to play but that role is not highlighted in the Gospels. The fact is that without the interaction of ALL the disciples Jesus’ ministry would not have flowed as easily as it did. There were people needed to look for accommodation, food, one on one ministry when Jesus was speaking, prayer both while He was speaking and for the people – just to mention a few situations. Last night I was invited to the award ceremony of the Heidelberg CPF. The SAPS were invited as well and a number of people from our local police force were present. Three security companies and the medical emergency teams were also invited and present. If I had to guess I would say that most if not all people were acknowledged for their work and dedication that they showed towards the safety of the people of Heidelberg. All too often we assume that people are going to be present to help in times of need (this is also the case for many people who we as a church help). The fact is that the people who help are doing it out of the kindness of their heart and more often than not because of the fact that they

Since the rain started this season, the Gauteng Traff ic Police has recorded several major accidents. The Gauteng Traff ic police plead with motorist to exercise necessary caution during this rainy season and also to adhere to the rules of the road at all times to avoid crashes and loss of lives on our roads. Many areas in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal
came to a standstill as devastating hailstorms, torrential rain and strong winds tore off roofs, flooded roads, smashed windows and cars, uprooted trees and walls, and tragically claimed three lives. The increased frequency of extreme weather events over the past couple of years has been marked and left consumers and insurers counting the toll of weather related catastrophes. Motorists are also reminded to keep a safe following distance, slow down during wet conditions, switch on headlamps and to buckle up.

Ekurhuleni set to reduce water loss by 34 percent A project to install water meters is underway in Tsakane, an area identified to have high water losses. About 11 000 unmetered stands in the Tsakane area will receive new meters and the city’s officials will also be repairing all leaks in metered stands. To date, a total of 5232 stands have been attended to and a further 5768 is expected to be completed by April 2018. This is expected to reduce the percentage of non-revenue water which is currently sitting on 34,5 percent and eradicate the backlog of unmetered stands. These strides are part of the city’s War on Leaks Campaign, which has been prioritized in the f ive-year Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the 2016/ 2017 financial year. The installation of meters will not only lessen water wastage but will allow residents to monitor their water usage and identify any internal leaks which is a
contributing factor to high water bills. Residents are informed that fixing internal leaks is not the main focus of the municipality. However, as part of this project all internal and external water leaks will be attended to. This is to ensure that technicians leave each identified household leak free. Non-revenue water consists of water that is distributed by Rand Water into the city’s water supply network and is subsequently “lost” in the system. Water losses are accounted as real and apparent losses. Apparent losses happen when water is used, or consumed but cannot be accounted for and is generally a result of a combination of customer meter inaccuracies, unauthorised consumption, water theft and data handling errors. Real water losses are water that is lost due to water leaks, burst pipes and illegal connections.

Waste brigades to keep Ekurhuleni clean The City of Ekurhuleni is embarking on a drive to recruit over 2000 waste brigades for the upcoming Keep Ekurhuleni Clean programme. The aim of this programme is to ensure that the City of Ekurhuleni is kept clean, whilst promoting social cohesion and preservation of the environment. This is in line with the Siyaqhuba Mayoral Outreach Programme launched by the Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Cllr Mzwandile Masina last year. The programme will employ over 2000 residents from across the city in the following positions: 2240 Waste Management Brigades (Ward based). 112 Supervisors (Ward based). ·20 Coordinators (Customer Care based). The day to day work schedule for the waste brigades will include turning illegal dumping of waste within the city into good jobs through recycling by targeting women, youth, and people living with disabilities. Only residents of the City of Ekurhuleni with a valid republic of South Africa identity document can apply. The period of employment is 18 months. Campaign against killing Besoek aan ‘n imposante woning of women and children A campaign standing for combat against killing women and children through sports will take place in December 2017. Killing of women and children escalated to the point where senior citizens stood up from sedentary behaviour and involved themselves in sports with a objective of demonstrating their dissatisfaction regarding this pendemic. Virtue Corporate Group is a non-profit organization situated in Duduza started in February 2014. Their main course is served as catalyst for change to vulnerable youth and adults. Duduza experience high rate women and children abuse. “The violence starts small and then escalates to the point where lives are lost” said Clement Khumalo, Project Director. The program conveyed strong message that says “ Stop killing us”. The event take place at the Duduza Sky Park on October 3 to encourage people to report any violent act at a early stage to be dealt with in time. The organization suggested running its awareness campaign in December month to keep their society safe. Dipuo Manake 64 years of age a personal trainer is dedicating her festive season to run organizational awareness sessions until all people realize the importance of humanity. Therefore the group appeals to everyone of Greater Nigel and Sedibeng to register their organization in this groups data order to work collectively in stopping this brutal acts. Die Argitek was Arthur Marshall wat sterk onder die invloed van Albert Baker was. Na Harold se dood is die plaas verkoop aan Denis Gallagher Russel, daarna was daar Oom Adam van Rensburg, Gawie Joubert, Oom Wykie van Wyk, en vandag is Dirk en Bea Cilliers die trotse eienaars van die plaas. Die oudhede in die plaashuis is treffend en maak die herehuis so uniek. Die dames is op ‘n toer deur die huis geneem om al die interessanthede te bekyk. Soos altyd is die verrigtinge afgesluit met heerlike smullekker eethappies en tee.

For the first time in the history of the Halcat sailing class, three disabled sailors in specially adapted Halcats took part in the Halcat SAS National Class Championship 2017, which was held at the end of September 2017 and hosted by the Stilbaai Yacht Club, Vaaldam. Approximately 30 Halcats from all over South Africa took part in this event. Thys Venter, Club Manager at Stilbaai Yacht Club and Kevin Fisher assisting Douglas Boman of The Catamaran Club, Bronkhorstspruit. The weekend was characterised by light wind conditions and strong competition between the top sailors. Ben Mienie of Stilbaai Yacht Club, better known as a DART18 sailor - with his knowledge of local conditions, made it very diff icult for the traditional Halcat Sailors. In the fourth place was Kyle Boman of The Catamaran Club, Bronkhorstspruit – Kyle is better known as a strong competitor in the Hobie16 Class. In the third place was Pieter Wissekerke and second place, Ben Mienie, both from Stilbaai Yacht Club. Rob Samways of the Royal Natal Yacht Club in Durban walked away as the Halcat National Champion for 2017.
