A 23 year old girl was swept away by a flooded stream and drowned. The deceased was removed from the flooded stream by Benoni Water Wing after a thorough search. According to SAPS the deceased was on her way to visit her friend, she crossed the river stream at Groenkloof Farming unaware that the water flow was currently stronger and she got swept away. Missing person was reported to the police the body was found on February 5.
Beware of snakes! Snakes are commonly called coldblooded and enjoy the heat, especially in the summer and when the rain falls. Recently many snake bites were reported. More than 80 per cent of all snakebites in South Africa occur between January and April and in the early evening with people accidentally stepping on snakes. Compared to other parts of the country, the Gauteng Highveld has only a few dangerous snakes. Over much of the greater Johannesburg region, the east rand and further south, the rinkhals, stiletto snake and night adder are of concern. North, east and west of Pretoria there are also the Mozambique spitting cobras, snouted cobras, puff adders, and boomslangs. The rinkhals is common in grasslands, especially near vlei areas where it is active during the day, hunting for toads and rodents. Nigel is known for the rinkhals. This snake often has a permanent lair and is quick to disappear down its hole is threatened. If cornered, the rinkhals spreads a hood exposing two or three white bars on the chest and will spit
readily. They can eject their venom as far as 3m. The other problematic snake is the stiletto snake. It is usually active in the early evening, often after rain, and commonly ends up in swimming pools or is brought into homes by cats. It is a small snake, usually dark brown to blackish and for some reason, people often mistake it for a harmless mole snake, even though it does not resemble it at all. While cats are far too quick and intelligent to get bitten by snakes, dogs are instinctive hunters and many dogs end up in veterinarian hospitals with serious bites.

Road tripping with your dog More and more we see dogs shifting roles from “watch guard” to “part of the family”, meaning that holidays are now, more than ever, being planned with pets in mind. Great news for dogs around the country, but this does mean that a little more planning and preparation is needed, to ensure your hounds are travel ready. “Generally speaking, dogs enjoy a road trip as much as we do, especially if they’ve been part of the travel fun from a young age,” says Dominique Kuhlmann, General Manager of the Pet Food Industry Association of Southern Africa (PFI). “And for those that are new to the travel game, there are thankfully various ideas that owners can make use of to make their pets more comfortable on the road.” Dogs thrive on routine, and while your trip will disrupt this, travelling with all the “comforts of home” will assist in adjusting to the new situation. Be sure to pack his favourite blanket, toys and his own feeding dishes. Especially important is your dog’s regular food to avoid any possible digestive disturbances that switching may cause. Seeing the vet before a long journey with your dog/s is never a bad idea. Certain vaccinations may be required for the destination and the vet should give your dogs the “all clear” for travel. Additional equipment to make the journey a safe, relaxed and comfortable one: Cooling blankets. Seat covers – to protect your car seats. Non-spill dishes. Pet car seat. Window Bumper, which clips onto the window so that your dog can rest its head on the soft padded bumper, instead of directly on the hard window ledge, for those who like to watch where they are going. Safety belt attachments – this allows your dog to lie down on the back seat, get to the window for air BUT stops him from lunging onto the front seat.
Safety Sitters – these allow you to buckle your pet in to prevent him from jumping out and disturbing passengers or pedestrians and safety nets. Your dog should wear a sturdy collar with an information disc containing your contact details. Microchips are becoming the most popular method of identification, but a tag offers an immediate solution, and owners can often be located before needing to take the pet to the vet to read the microchip. It’s also a good idea to travel with a photo of your pet in case he gets lost. On the day of travel it is recommended to get a walk in before you depart. Only feed a small meal a few hours before you leave to limit the effect of car sickness. Be prepared to stop often, to allow your dog to toilet and stretch his legs but secure your pet on a leash before opening any doors. Offer him small amounts of water at regular intervals to prevent dehydration. Although your dog may love sticking his head out of the window, it really is not recommended. Finally, be aware of the temperature in the car. Blankets may be needed in cold temperatures and open windows or air conditioners are needed when travelling in very hot weather. Never leave your pet in the car as the car’s internal temperature could rise to fatal levels very quickly.

Mieke Esterhuizen is ‘n 4 jarige inwoner van Nigel wat bedags by Maranata Dagsorg tuis gaan saam met al haar geliefde maatjies en is mal oor diere. Met haar verjaarsdag vieringe 26 Januarie het mamma Juanita vir al die klasmaats heerlike verversings voorsien en aan al die maatjies is gevra om enige voedsel vir Nigel Dierebeskermings Vereniging te skenk. Die groot partytjie het op 27 Januarie plaasgevind waar alle partytjie gaste iets vir die diere gebring het. Mieke en Juanita was bewus van die groot behoefte en reuse tekort aan voedsel en fondse wat NDBV benodig om om te sien na die diere wat daar versorg word en herberg geniet. Die maatjies was almal baie ywerig en het groot hoeveelheid kos ingesamel. Welgedaan Mieke muis en al haar maatjies. Selfs lede van die gemeenskap het met ontvanklike harte aan die projek deelgeneem en voedsel geskenk. NDBV se doelwit vir 2018 is om kampies te bou en op te rig vir die diere, sodat hul uit die hokke kan beweeg. Hulle benodig ook speelgoed vir die diere sodat hul in die kampies daarmee kan speel. Hulle wil
baie graag tuin maak en die terrein skeppend maak vir die diere. Die gemeenskap wat wil betrokke raak en gratis hulp en dienste wil aanbied vir hierdie goeie saak kan 083 455 7391 skakel. KEEP BURGLARS OUT (4) REQUIREMENTS OF A GOOD SYSTEM: A good alarm system should have the following features: It should offer personal protection by means of panic buttons and an early-warning facility that will also protect the buildings. It must detect the intruder before he enters the house. It must not cause inconvenience. It must give the residents freedom of movement and be permanently operational – not only when they are out of the house. It must be linked to at least two alarms – one inside and one outside – with the inside one being the most important. Remember, the purpose of the alarm is to deter the intruder and make him run away, so the louder the noise, the more effective the system. Panic buttons which activate the alarm should be installed at the external doors, as well as in other strategic places such as in the bedrooms and in the passage. A portable remote control switch is a further possibility. When the panic button is used, the alarm should continue sounding until it is switched off. This makes it more likely that help will arrive if the owner is attacked or injured. The system should switch itself off automatically within four to seven minutes of being activated, and must be self-correcting with regard to subsequent problems. The system should have its own reverse power supply in case the power supply to the house is cut. Efficient and reliable support services must be available. FURTHER SAFETY FEATURES: Some systems automatically dial outside numbers (up to four numbers) once activated. This is of particular value in the event of injuries. A remote-control panic system which can be activated at a distance of 50 to 100 meters, is a useful extra. An early-warning system which warns the owner as soon as someone enters the property, usually by means of a soft buzzer, could also be installed. Mkuseli Apleni, Direkteur-generaal van die Departement van Binnelandse sake, het verlede week op ’n mediakonferensie in Pretoria gesê dit is fop nuus dat die groen identiteitsboeke in Suid-Afrika se dae getel is. Daar is in sosiale media beweer die groen identiteitsboekies verval op 31 Maart vanjaar. Dit is nié die geval nie. Apleni het gesê dit het veroorsaak dat baie mense na kantore van die departement van binnelandse sake gestroom het om aansoek te doen om identiteitskaarte. Dit het onnodige druk op die departement se 411 kantore landwyd geplaas. Volgens hom het 38 miljoen SuidAfrikaners in Julie 2013 groen identiteitsboekies gehad toe die eerste ID-kaarte uitgereik is. Mense wat ID-kaarte wil hê kan op die departement van binnelandse sake se webwerf daarom aansoek doen of by die onderskeie landswye kantore. Sowat 7 miljoen ID-kaarte is sedert Julie 2013 uitgereik.
The department of energy has announced the petrol and diesel price changes taking effect this week. From 7 February motorists paid 30 cents less per litre for both grades of petrol, and 17 cents less per litre on the price of diesel. The price of illuminating paraffin will be dropping by 19 cents per litre. According to the department, the main contributor to the petrol price drop was the stronger rand, which countered the rising global cost of brent crude oil. “The rand appreciated, on average, against the US dollar (from R13.23 to R12.20 per USD) during the period under review. This led to a lower contribution to the basic fuel price on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraff in by 52.85cpl, 54.66cpl and 54.88cpl respectively,” the department said. The average brent crude oil price, meanwhile, increased from $64.08 to $69.11 during the same period. The changes are as follows: Petrol 93: 30 cents per litre decrease Petrol 95: 30 cents per litre decrease Diesel 0.05%: 17 cents per litre decrease Diesel 0.005%: 17 cents per litre decrease Illuminating paraffin: 19 cents per litre decrease.
Sassa payments under siege All hell is about to break loose but Sassa claims that: On 1 March 2018, they will do direct transfers to about 5.7 million beneficiaries who use the Sassa card. That this will bring about 80% of payment transactions under the control of Sassa by the end of March 2018. By April 2018, the only benef iciaries whose payments won’t be falling
under Sassa control will be the ones paid in cash at Sassa paypoints. They said the reason for these cash payments is because 2.5 million beneficiaries do not have ID documents. The South African Post Office has already advertised a tender for a cash payment facility, which will pay out to just under three million beneficiaries.

Water challenges The Dipaleseng municipality has regrettably noted that there is a water quality challenge within the municipal jurisdiction. The municipality has since decided to bring forward the annual routine maintenance process of cleaning and sterilizing the 12 reservoirs which will commence at the beginning of March 2018 and will last for a period of 3 months to urgently address the current situation. The community is sensitized of water challenges and requested to; Be cautious to treat water by boiling and purifying before consumption. Use water sparingly as the challenge of water shortage, like in other parts of the country is also imminent in our area. Necessary measures will be taken to ensure that the community is kept abreast about this process and the remedial actions by the municipality to ensure water provision to the community. Is dit belangrik om gereeld oefeninge te doen? Talle dinge het in die tyd waarin ons lewe drasties verander. Vroeër het die meeste mense met hulle hande gewerk. Masjinerie wat produkte vervaardig, het feitlik nie bestaan nie. Alles moes self gemaak word. Om hierdie rede het mense baie oefening gekry, nie net deur hul werk nie, maar ook deur hul alledaagse lewe. Mense het byvoorbeeld geloop om by vriende te gaan kuier. Vandag kry ons oor die algemeen min oefening. Ons sit ure op die skoolbanke, by die rekenaar of voor die TV. Volgens kenners is die gevolg dat ons liggame in baie gevalle nie na behore ontwikkel nie. Soos mense ouer word, skep swak ontwikkelde spiere probleme. Rugpyn is byvoorbeeld dikwels die gevolg van swak maagspiere. Die waarde van sport Deur gereeld te oefen of aan sport deel te neem, is belangrik. Nie net bou dit jou liggaam nie, maar ook jou verstand. Die spreekwoord: ‘n gesonde liggaam huisves ‘n gesonde gees, is baie waar. Statistieke het bewys dat indien ‘n mens gereeld oefen, jou hele uitkyk op die lewe meer positief is. Baie mense vertel dat deur
te oefen, raak hul van talle frustrasies ontslae. Sport entoesiaste vertel dat spansport help met ‘n mens se persoonsontwikkeling. Goeie sport bevorder spangees, dissipline, kameraadskap, selfbeheersing en deursettingsvermoë. Sport wek ook gesonde kompetisie, mense leer ‘n sin vir regverdigheid, hoe om te wen, maar ook hoe om te verloor. In my sportbeoefening moet ek egter ook met myself rekening hou. Geen gesonde oefening is verkeerd nie, maar te veel oefening of selfs ooreising is nadelig vir die gesondheid. Ongelukkig het sport vir baie mense ‘n obsessie geword, vir talle mense gaan dit net alles om “mooi” en “aantreklik” te lyk. Die rol van geld en materiële voorspoed
in sport het vir baie mense belangriker as die sport en gesonde ontspanning geword. Gereelde oefening is nodig om ons liggame op te bou. Skolesport bied die geleentheid om in spanverband mee te ding.
