Reduce waiting times The City of Ekurhuleni has partnered with commercial pharmacy groups such as Clicks, Pick ‘n Pay, Dischem and Medirite with assistance of National Department of Health to serve as chronic medication pick-up points to reduce waiting times at healthcare facilities. The public-private partnership with the 49 contracted pharmacies in Ekurhuleni, complements the existing 111 pick-up points which service about 44 800 patients. This service gives residents the opportunity to choose a convenient pharmacy for them to collect their medicine from.

On average, 60% of patients visiting clinics are stable patients, only to collect their chronic medication. Ideally, to avoid patients queuing, they have expanded pick-up points. The service is only open to stable patients who have undergone a minimum of six medical reviews and their medical records confirm adherence to the proper dosing schedule. Once a health practitioner has given the go-ahead for a patient to collect their prescription, a patient will sign a consent form to indicate the pharmacy of their choice where they

want to collect their two months’ treatment. Once the medication is available at the pick-up point, an sms notification will be sent to the patient to collect their medicine within 14 days from the time the sms would have been sent. Patients are expected to visit the clinic after six months, for re-scripting and medical assessment. Should any sickness or medical complications arise, the patient is advised to visit their nearest clinic. A proof of identification and clinic card will be required when collecting medica-tion at the pharmacy.

not forgotten” Where Heaven really is, is often a point of disagreement, a point of intense debate but maybe not really important. This is the thought that crossed my mind in looking up at the beautiful night sky and the bright and friendly moon. Where is Jesus? might be a quiet thought in a time of deep desperation but it could also just be a fleeting thought in looking at the enormous night sky which continues beyond the view of the naked eye. Looking up must have allowed the early disciples to witness the Ascension of Jesus. Is His ascension significant to us in 2018? So significant that we actually marked the date – May 10 on our calendar or in our diaries? Quite often it is a day that goes by without us really taking note of the fact that it is actually also a day that is important in our Christian walk and not just an afterthought to Good Friday and Easter. Most people are aware and take note of Good Friday – the day Jesus died for all our sins and similar with Easter Sunday – the day of Jesus resurrection when the empty tomb gave us a reason for celebration, celebration because of the fulfillment of a promise. His earthly ministry did not end there, but actually a total of 40 days later. Ascension Day The day Jesus returned to Heaven but did not go away. This might not make sense to all of us because how can something or someone go away without really leaving? It does not feel or sound right. This is in actual fact what happened, we received a Comforter to be with us. Jesus said to the disciples in Luke 24:49 that He will send the promise of the Father as we see promised in Joel 2:28 as the Spirit of God which would be poured out on all flesh to be with His people (John 14:16). That is why I say we are “not deserted or forgotten.” “Not deserted and not forgotten” not just because we have the blessing of His Spirit with us and His ability to be at work everywhere among us but also because He intercede for us at the right hand of God and is preparing a place for us from where

From the desk of Rev Elize Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church 083 228 4152 He will return in the same way as the angels explained to the disciples in Acts 1:11 that we can be with Him. That is why Ascension remains important and is actually the completion of His earthly mission but He remains active in our world and our lives. Ascension Day is therefore a day of joy and celebration which we will do on Wednesday May 10 with praise and worship as yet another day when God showed not only His power but without question His love and compassion for the world and His people. This includes you, whoever you are, whatever you might have done, God loves you and you are included in everything offered through the Easter messages. It does not matter on which date you might read this article, you can still celebrate that Jesus, who walked this earth and lived a human life, know and understand the sufferings in human life. That is why He can intercede with sympathy and compassion for you in your times of trouble, weakness or suffering. He is with you. God is good!

PREVENTION KEEP BURGLARS OUT (7) ESCAPE ROUTE: Although security systems (gates, burglar-proofing) are designed to keep intruders out, they also keep the residents in. It is vitally important that you have an escape route in the event of an emergency such as a fire, flood, explosion, etc. The keys to at least two exits – one at the front of the house and one at the back – must be readily accessible, particularly at night. GUARD DOGS: A reliable guard dog is an excellent deterrent, particularly against impulsive theft. A trained guard dog offers good protection. South Africans are traditionally very proud of their fierce dogs, and often boast that no one would dare come into their property while the dog is there. However one should not overestimate a (trained) dog, since even the cleverest dog can easily be outsmarted by a person. As a security measure, dogs also need a lot of attention. A dog‘s reliability depends largely on the amount of love and care it receives. Don‘t expect too much from an animal that is forced to spend its life ‘alone’ in the back yard. YOU AND YOUR DOG: If you own a (fierce) dog, it is your duty to protect the public from it, otherwise you run the risk of an expensive civil law suit. Warning signs, indicating that the dog may bite and that people enter the property on their own risk, should be displayed clearly on all outside gates. Make sure that the dog remains on your property and is properly controlled when off your premises. If the dog has been trained to attack, injures someone who is entitled to come onto the premises, for example the meter reader, etc, the court may hold the owner of the dog liable. Smaller breeds of dog not only need less attention, but also make more noise – a very effective deterrent to intruders. Larger breeds require more attention and must receive proper training. A number of professional clubs offer obedience and security training for dogs. It is not usually necessary to train dogs to attack – but simply to protect. Trained guard dogs that sleep in the house, are of greater value. But the disadvantages are that they may slip on floor tiles or their nails may hook into the carpet, possibly leading to injuries. Domestic workers and casual gardeners are responsible for numerous break-ins. Do not allow them to befriend your dog(s) Next: Keep burglars out (8) – Installing locks, Requirements for greater security, etc. Reference: Crime Prevention – Stop Crime / Beveiliging van huis en haard – Smith LJL van Shaik Limited, Libi Building, Church Street, Pretoria. 1989 / Beveg misdadigers effektief – Buredell Publishers, Pretoria. 1989

It’s getting a little harder to get out of bed in the morning and more tempting to linger in a hot shower, sure signs that winter is on its way. South Africa’s temperate climate means that for most of us this means bringing out a heavier duvet or putting more blankets on the bed. But are there any other practical steps you can or should be taking to prepare for the change of season? Planning ahead Buying winter essentials such as firewood, gas or even replacing old or broken heaters is best done before the weather turns cold. Also bear in mind that power cuts are more likely in winter either because high winds blow trees across power lines or increased demand puts strain on electrical infrastructure. These are much easier to deal with if you’ve got working torches and batteries in the house. Rechargeable solar LED lights are also a good idea, as long as you make sure they’re charged. A skottelbraai or gas-fuelled camping set are quick to set up and easy to cook on when the power goes out, but entirely useless if you’ve run out of gas. Check. If you bought a generator or an uninterrupted power supply system during the days of loadshedding, test them to make sure they still work. Preventative maintenance Simple maintenance includes making sure gutters are clear of leaves and other debris. The weight of water in clogged gutters can break the brackets that support them. The backed up water also needs to go somewhere. If you’re lucky it’ll just pour over the side. If not, the wind can blow it up under the tiles potentially damaging ceilings and fittings. While you’re checking the gutters also take a careful look at the roof for missing, broken or shifted tiles or other issues that could result in leaks or the wind getting in and potentially causing more damage. If you are looking forward to a nice roaring f ire, check your chimney. You should be looking for blockages such as birds’ nests and soot build up. If there does seem to be excessive soot, it’s worth considering getting in a professional rather than risking a fire in the chimney. Take a walk around the house and check for any trees that might blow over or branches that could break off and damage

the house. You may be able to trim some yourself, but if you’re in doubt get in a professional tree feller. While you’re doing your walk-around check the outside lighting. This is a sensible security precaution because it gets dark earlier in winter. Not only will well-lit paths potentially discourage criminals, but will help prevent you, your family or guests tripping and falling on cold winter nights or early mornings. Conserving heat Whether you’re using a gas or electric heater, or a f ire to warm your house, heating costs money. The first thing to consider if you want to save heat and money is to make sure the house is well insulated. If you don’t have insulation in your ceiling, it’s worth considering. It’ll keep the heat in during winter and keep you cool in summer. If you have insulation, check to make sure it hasn’t shifted, been torn or damaged. While you’re in the ceiling, check to see if there’s a cover on the geyser. If not, you may want to think about getting one. Heating water is also expensive. Once you’ve dealt with the roof space, check doors and windows. It’s relatively cheap and effective to fit self-adhesive rubber seals to the bottom of draughty doors and to f ix window’s that aren’t sealing properly or repair weather strips. A simple sausage-dog draft excluder is easy to make and will stop cold air getting in under doors. Another tip is to use your curtains. Open them when the sun’s shining and warming the house. Close them when it’s dark and cold, they help prevent the warm air escaping. Consider the placement of your furniture. It may be great to have the sofa in front of the heater, particularly for the people sitting on it, but this may prevent the warm air circulating to the rest of the room. DirectAxis marketing head, Marlies Kappers, says preparing for winter doesn’t need to cost a fortune. ‘Some sensible spending before it gets cold might mean avoiding bigger costs when a tree falls down or a gutter breaks in the middle of winter.” For more information on household maintenance and renovations visit: https:/ /www.directaxis.co.za/make-a-plan/ prioritise-home-maintenance

Jokes on Rules for Growing rate of road fatalities driving in South Africa Never indicate – this will give away your next move. A real south African driver never uses them. Under no circumstance should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, this space will be filled by at least 2 taxis and a BMW, putting you in an even more dangerous situation. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit. Never, ever come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one expects it and it will only result in you being rear-ended. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving you a nice, relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it’s a chance to stretch your legs. Never pass on the right when you can pass on the left. It’s a good way to check if the people entering the highway are awake. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as a guideline. They are especially not applicable in South Africa during rush hour. That’s why it’s called ‘rush hour….’ Just because you’re in the right lane and

have no room to speed up or move over doesn’t mean that a South African driver flashing his high beams behind you doesn’t think he can go faster in your spot. Always slow down and rubberneck when you see an accident or even someone changing a tyre. Never stop to help – you will be mugged. Learn to swerve abruptly. South Africa is the home of the high-speed slalom driving thanks to the government, which puts holes in key locations to test drivers’ reflexes and keeps them on their toes. It is traditional to honk your horn at cars that don’t move the instant the light turns green. This prevents storks from building nests on top of the traffic light and birds from making deposits on your car. Remember that the goal of every South African driver is to get there f irst, by whatever means necessary. On average, at least three cars can still go through an intersection after the light has turned red. It’s people not adhering to this basic principle that causes the big traffic jams during rush hour. Now guys go out there today and make South Africa proud!

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has expressed disappointment at the growing rate of road fatalities in Gauteng. Gauteng experienced major fatal crashes during the long weekend while South Africans observed Freedom day to mark 24 years of breaking the chains and realising a democratic dispensation. Our law enforcement agencies were hard at work during the busy long weekend ensuring that drivers constantly adhere to the rules of the road and arrested 252 drunk drivers across the City of Johannesburg, with Soweto topping the list with a recorded 53 arrests. Preliminary statistics from Gauteng Province from Thursday the 26th of April until the 30th of April 2018 paints a very worrying picture.

Gauteng recorded 41 fatal crashes as well as 51 fatalities broken down into 22 pedestrians, 11 drivers, 15 passengers, 2 motor cyclists as well as 1 cyclist. “It is of great concern that some unwarranted behaviours continued unabated and this has been widely demonstrated by the rate of fatalities during this long weekend. We have noticed that many accidents were caused by over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving unroadworthy vehicle amongst others. As Gauteng government, we will continue to implement programmes and initiatives that are aimed at reducing road crashes as these rob the country of the skills and talent essential in building a flourishing nation.

No definite anwers regarding social grants with the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and the South African Post Office (SAPO) has been reached. The broad contingency plan was always to find a new service provider, which had now been confirmed to only be ready in July, and not April 1. Meanwhile, the details of the cash payment "contingency" were simultaneously being discussed in Cabinet with the interministerial committee recently. The court has not yet given a date for when it will make its ruling on CPS' extension.
