Jeppe street clinic to be closed after failed R3 million refurbishment The Jeppe Street provincial clinic in central Johannesburg will be closing down after a refurbishment that cost R3
million failed to eliminate health risks to staff and patients. According to Gauteng Health MEC, Gwen Ramokgopa “management decided to close the clinic because infrastructural issues that were identif ied have resurfaced and this poses a health risk to staff and patients. She says that the clinic staff will be relocated to the 18th Avenue clinic in Alexandra and patients will be redirected to the Essellen clinic and the Hillbrow Community Health Centre. The Jeppe Street clinic was initially closed in 2012 for a R2 million renovation that was
completed in March 2014. When problems resurfaced, including mouldy and smelly walls, it was closed in March last year and reopened in November 2017 after R990 000 was spent to fix it. All these money was wasted on contractors hired by the Infrastructure Development Department who were unable to do a good job to fix this clinic. This department is notorious for choosing building companies that charge too much and fail to deliver, with strong indications of corruption. Examples include the Randwest Clinic in Randfontein which was delayed by more than two
years and cost triple the original budget after contractors were changed three times, and the Finetown Clinic which has been delayed for a year after costs went up from R35 million to R53 million. Meanwhile, the closure of this clinic will greatly inconvenience the 2500 patients who used it every month and will have to travel further for their treatment. There needs to be a forensic investigation into probable corruption in the refurbishment fiasco at this clinic and accountability to ensure that all corrupt and incompetent officials are rooted out.
Suffering – why does bad things happen to good people? So often we want an explanation and a reason for everything that is part of life and it is a more urgent need and even a pressing issue when it comes to the difficult things. Those things which expose us to some or other pain or suffering and devastation. From Job’s friends we get a teaching in what not to do. Far to often we are also speaking about and into another person’s pain without thinking in saying “everything happens for a reason”, which might be the case but really bringing no relief to the situation but adding insult to injury. In looking at Job we see it is ok not to have all the answers and even to lament in the stormy chaos of our reality and even to express our confusion, our frustration and our fear to God in prayer. It might not bring instant change but it will help us to focus on Him who is victorious over all evil and the only real Friend in need who can guide us through the darkness to new light where there will be joy and peace. exposed to some difficulty or suffering because as recorded through all times in history it remains part of human reality, although we still ask “Why?” as so many others in all generations. It remains diff icult to accept that it is just life happening. The hobby horse of explanations was even recorded in the Old Testament of the Bible when Job’s friends thought they knew why he had to experience so many bad luck. They were completely off the mark but convinced about their explanation and not any different to our time. We often turn to our friends with the same questions hoping for an easy explanation for the difficulties in life with seldom a positive result. Sadly it is also just as often that the question is asked, that God is blamed for it or even explained that it is because of our own wrongdoing. We could all try to explain evil from every angle in the book, but still it remains to most of us a mystery as to why bad things happens to good people. To a lucky few it is very easy to explain or to understand the trouble of other people in saying “Bad things doesn’t happen to good people.” Trying to f ind an easy explanation for the suffering of people is so very similar to what Job’s friends did in Job 22:5 Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless? (NIV) This only holds water to the point that “trouble” knock on their own door and the “Holier than thou” attitude needs to be abandoned and the trouble at hand needs to be handled.

Polisieman in hegtenis Eyesore - readers demand geneem na kaping
Polisieman van Balfour in hegtenis geneem na hy paartjie kaap. ‘n Man van Balfour beweer dat ’n polisiekonstabel hom en sy vrou onlangs by Balfour gekaap het. Vir meer as twee dae lank het ’n konstabel van Balfour sy kollegas probeer ontduik voordat hy hom oorgegee en in hegtenis geneem is. Die betrokke polisieman is daarvan beskuldig dat hy glo ’n paartjie gekaap het. Polisiewoordvoerder Brig. Leonard Hlathi, beweer dat die 33-jarige konstabel wat gestasioneer is by Balfour-polisiestasie aan diens was toe hy vermoedelik terwyl hy in ‘n staatsvoertuig gery het, vir ‘n motorbestuurder beduie het om van die pad af te trek. Die voorval het deur ‘n twiet vanaf die slagoffer aan die lig gekom. “Ons is gister deur ‘n polisieoffisier gekaap. Sy naam is Gcinumuzi J. Mashinini. Dit het op die R23 by Balfour gebeur, en dié polisiebeampte werk in Balfour se polisiekantoor.” Hlathi vertel dat volgens die inligting tot hul beskikking het die betrokke offisier na die slagoffers se voertuig gestap en die bestuurder en sy vrou beveel om uit te klim. Die verdagte het toe die paartjie se voertuig gekaap terwyl hy ‘n vuurwapen op die kapingslagoffers gerig het en die staatsvoertuig daar gelaat. Die voorval het na bewering ná donker plaasgevind. Die twiet wat deur Tshabalala geplaas is is reeds amper 700 keer hertwiet en ongeveer 50 lesers het daarop kommentaar gelewer. Een wou by Tshabalala weet wat van die beampte se voertuig geword het as hy dan kwansuis alleen te werk gegaan het. “Hy het dit op die toneel gelaat,” het Tshabalala geantwoord. Tshabalala het foto’s van die vermeende kaper op Twitter gedeel. Hy beweer hy het by die polisiekantoor oor die voorval gaan kla. Nabewering is die betrokke voertuig deur ‘n ander beampte gereserveer. Hy het dit waarskynlik nie bespreek nie sodat dit nie na hom verwys kon word nie.”
Talle lede van die publiek het Tshabalala daarvan beskuldig dat hy die voorval uit die duim gesuig het, maar ene Boitumelo het laat hoor, dis waar. “Die beampte word met genoemde voertuig vermis, my pa is ‘n polisieman by hierdie kantoor. Die vermeende kaper het die vangwa met die sleutels op die toneel gelaat. Hy het nie die betrokke voertuig bespreek nie en het daarom geensins omgegee om dit op die toneel te laat staan nie.” Die kollegas het nie weer van die konstabel gehoor nie tot en met hy homself oorgegee het. Tydens sy inhegtenisneming is die slagoffer se Polo Vivo teruggekry sowel as die staat se vuurwapen wat hy na bewering tydens die kaping gebruik het. Die konstabel sal in die Balfour landdroshof verskyn op aanklagte van motorkaping, die wederegtelike gebruik van ‘n staatsvoertuig en diefstal van ‘n vuurwapen. Lt.genl. Mondli Zuma het intussen sy kommer uitgespreek oor wetstoepassers se betrokkenheid by misdaad. Hy het polisielede gewaarsku geen misdadige of korrupte elemente sal in die SAPD geduld word nie. Twee weke gelede is drie polisiebeamptes tydens ‘n gesamentlike optrede vir hul aandeel aan renosterstropery in die Krugerwildtuin in hegtenis geneem. Die drie word aangehou tot hul borgtogverhoor in Witrivier se landdroshof.
Dilapidated houses in Nigel belonging to the Deparment Public Works which is an eyesore, has now become a haven for criminals and homeless people. The one house situated at the cnr of Barkly and Rhodes Avenue was burnt down approximately five years ago and nothing has been done to restore it. The other house situated at the cnr of Rhodes and Voortrekker streets is currently occupied by members of the SAPS and is in dire need of maintenance.

Die regerende African National Congress (ANC), insamewerking met die Ekonomiese Vryheidsvegters (EFF), is vasbeslote om artikel 25 van die Grondwet te wysig, wat die onteiening van grond sonder vergoeding toelaat as 'n manier om grondhervorming te bespoedig. Die kwessie van grondverspreiding is waarskynlik die felste flitspunt in SuidAfrika - met baie grondeienaars wat vrees dat die populistiese retoriek uiteindelik sal lei tot die vernietiging van privaat eiendomswette. Terwyl die regering geweier het om inligting wat betrekking het op die geteikende eiendomme te laat vaar, het AfriForum 'n bomskerm laat val deur 'n lys te laat vaar, wat volgens hulle lyste op die onteieningsradar van die regering bevat. By die bekendstelling van die dokument, wat na bewering van die Departement van Landelike Ontwikkeling en Grondhervorming gekom het, het AfriForum gesê: "Ons verwag dat baie grondeienaar geskok sal word om te verneen dat hul eiendom vir hierdie doel geïdentifiseer is. Dit is presies waarom dit so belangrik is dat die lys gedeel word en dat mense ons kan kontak." Die omstrede lys, wat in Augustus vrygestel is, het wydverspreide paniek veroorsaak, in die eerste plek onder grondeienaars wie se name verskyn het. AfriForum het 'n terugslag van verskeie belanghebbendes gekry, waaronder AgriSA en die Departement van Landelike Ontwikkeling en Grondhervorming. What will you experience It will appear as though your line is without network, meanwhile your sim has been swapped. The danger is that you will not get any alert of any transactions, so those of you using USSD banking and mobile banking beware.

Volgens Kallie Kriel, uitvoerende hoof van AfriForum, het die regering voortgegaan met die verhoor onteiening, wat op plase in Limpopo fokus wat op die lys genoem word. "Ondanks die feit dat die regering tot onlangs die bestaan van so 'n lys ontken het, word die korrektheid van die lys bevestig omdat die regering reeds Akkerland se plase begin waardeer het teen aansienlik laer vergoeding as markwaarde."sê Kriel.

Balfour library honors elderly Mrs Vera Wilhelmina Froneman who was born back in 1927 celebrated her 91st birthday on October 9. The personnel from Balfour Library armed with a special birthday cake and other goodies payed an unexpected visit to her at the Balfour Old Age Home. This soft spoken refined lady is truly young at heart has been an active member of the library for many years and enjoys reading romantic novels. Mrs Froneman could not believe the surprise as she enjoyed a day of special treatment with her husband and neighbours.
