Sepiester bekende gesig in Nigel

Advent: What; Why; When; How? In only six weeks we will celebrate another Christmas. Is it really a celebration to you and your family and how can we make sure that it is not just another holiday but a deeply

meaningful time? This year could be different by starting with a time of preparation with an Advent journey. The word Advent means “coming” or “arrival” and signif icantly important thinking back to the days of the early humans on earth who were waiting for the coming of the long expected Messiah promised to bring change and restoration to the people of God. Therefore Advent is a time of hope and expectation encouraging us to spend some time to remember why Jesus was born. This is done in many different ways and at times done completely different in the different traditions and cultures. Most of the time it does involve the whole family taking part in some activity with the aim to remember why we celebrate Christmas. Celebrating Advent is part of the Christian faith from as early as the 300’s after Christ and developed into the season of Advent during the month of December. The lighting of candles is often used as a reminder of the coming of Jesus as the Light into the darkness of our sinful world. Sometimes a candle is lit every day during a time of prayer or just once a week on the Sunday. It is also interesting that in some traditions different color candles are used representing different messages and symbolism and used on each of the four

Sundays with an optional fifth candle for Christmas Day representing the birth of Jesus. According to Laura Richie the messages of the different candles are: The first candle symbolizes hope and is called the “Prophet’s Candle.” The prophets of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival. The second candle represents faith and is called “Bethlehem’s Candle.” Micah had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, which is also the birthplace of King David. The third candle symbolizes joy and is called the “Shepherd’s Candle.” To the shepherd’s great joy, the angels announced that Jesus came for humble, unimportant people like them, too. In liturgy, the color rose signifies joy. The fourth candle represents peace and is called the “Angel’s Candle.” The angels announced that Jesus came to bring peace He came to bring people close to God and to each other again. The optional fifth candle represents light and purity and is called “Christ’s candle.” It is placed in the middle and is lit on Christmas Day. Does your family consider the celebration of Christmas important enough that you journey with faith and expectation as preparation for the beautiful and meaningful Christmas Celebrations? It doesn’t

From the desk of Rev Elize Goddess, Heidelberg Methodist Church 083 228 4152 matter how we choose to structure our Advent journey but what is important is that we look into our own hearts and commit ourselves to making it meaningful in focusing on the birth of Christ as an undeserved gift of Grace from our Loving Heavenly Father. It is not to late, Jesus remains the only Light to bring answers into our dark world and restore true peace and true joy.

Greener streets and cleaner air Trees, like electrical power lines, water and sewer pipes, are vital infrastructure due to the essential benefits they provide to enhance urban development. Among the benefits of having adequate number of trees in the environment is that they counter the effects of harmful gasses by absorbing them and replenishing the oxygen into the atmosphere. Emission of harmful gasses is inevitable in a rapidly urbanising environment. Trees also have a cooling effect on the environment by providing shades. In order to enjoy the benefits of having trees for a longer period, they also require a constant maintenance. The City of Ekurhuleni has trees that have survived for periods ranging up to 40 years, and it has more than one million street trees that have been planted over years.

Therefore, Ekurhuleni is rolling out a programme to protect and enhance its green urban infrastructure. The programme entails pruning and replanting of dying street trees. Residents are reminded that after pruning, tree branches and leaves might take longer than a day to remove due to the amount of labour needed to remove them, and street cleaning required. As part of the programme, Ekurhuleni is consolidating the list of streets and suburbs that are experiencing backlogs in pruning and replanting of street trees. At least for a one week in a month, all the street-tree maintenance teams will be consolidated into one team to work on the backlog area. Arboriculture contractors will also be used to bolster the teams for the maintenance of the street trees.

Prostate cancer awareness Radical Arts Forum in partnership with Supreme Springs, hosted a 2 days prostate cancer awareness campaign to educate about 500 of their male employees about the disease, ranging from managers, engineers to operators. This was done in recognition of October being a cancer month. They aim to encourage men to take their health serious by checking regularly at the clinic. Local health workers from Nigel, Alrapark and Duduza were part of the campaign to help Radical Arts Forum, who created a prostate

cancer based story to educate workers by using theatre as the catalyst to pass on the message, came in numbers to educate workers. The workers were thrilled by the information. Seemingly they were not open minded about prostate cancer. They all wanted to be screened for it immediately after the campaign, which led to the company to organise a mobile clinic from the district health department to come and screen them. The mobile was available on November 12.

Arrested for illegal electricity connections An employee of the City of Ekurhuleni and eight business people were arrested November 7 for illegal connection of electricity to business premises on the East Rand. The employee is working at the Energy Department of the City, which is responsible for electricity connections and disconnections. The preliminary investigation conducted by the City revealed that the employee solicited bribe for illegally connecting one of the businesses. The businessmen were arrested for illegal connection to their business premises. All affected premises were disconnected on November 7 during the law enforcement operation led by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and the City’s Energy Department. The City has suffered monetary losses amounting to R704,8 million for the financial year that ended in June 2018 due to non-technical electricity losses that are caused by among others illegal connections and bypassing of electricity meters. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water, Sanitation and Energy, Cllr Tiisetso Nketle said government in general is in a state of austerity measures, and it is unacceptable that the City losses electricity revenue that can contribute to addressing other urgent service delivery needs. She said the City will do all it can to rid

itself of all rogue elements in its employ that are assisting criminal syndicates in the business community to do illegal electricity connections. MMC Cllr Nketle urged residents to report any incidents of fraud or corruption to the Anti-Fraud and Corruption hotline on 0800 102 201. Such incidents have already occurred locally and f ines have been issued. Readers are warned and must take note investigations will take place so make sure your meters and connections are in proper working order.

A City official working in the Energy Department was detained at a Police Station to face fraud charges.

On Friday, 26 October 2018, the City Manager issued Ms. Malaza with a letter requesting her to provide reasons as to why she should not be suspended. Upon receiving a response from Ms. Malaza, the City Manager found that there was no basis for her not to be suspended. Ms. Malaza was suspended effectively on Monday, October 29. Ms. Malaza has been suspended pending the finalization of an investigation into alleged non-disclosure of information regarding her dismissal from the South African Broadcasting Corporation as required by Regulation 11 of the Systems Act of 2000. Further investigations are currently being conducted by the City and should be concluded within the next 3 months.

When are e-tolls going to fall? The Premier said “The e-tolls shall fall”, the question is when will e-tolls fall Mr Premier? This is the comment by the Gauteng Premier, David Makhura during the Tripartite Alliance march to the Union Buildings against e-tolls on November 2. This is one of many broken promises made by the ANC government that has implemented e-tolls without consulting the people of Gauteng. Makhura failed to effectively fight e-tolls despite admitting that the e-tolls are not working. The Premier has broken his commitment that he made on numerous occasions to the Gauteng residents that his government will address the issue of e-tolls. Once again the residents of Gauteng are misled, by once again promising ahead of the elections to scrap e-tolls. E-tolls cannot be used as voting fodder during every election period. People wants e-tolls to be scrapped immediately and there is a chance to do exactly that this year when the contract ends on December 31. If the President was indeed concerned about the plight of the poor in this country as echoed, by Jeffrey Radebe, Minister of Energy while receiving the memorandum, the President would have scrapped the etolls long time ago. Up to date it is clear that the ANC has no intention of doing away with e-tolls.

Stock theft shocking A shocking 1609 cases of stock theft were reported to the SAPS in Gauteng between March 2017 and September 2018, with 1159 cases occurring in the 2017/18 period and six months into the next financial year, already 450 cases have been reported. This compared to 903 cases in 2014/2015, 888 cases in 2015/ 2016, and 1016 cases during the 2016/2017 financial year. These latest reported cases involved the theft of 3123 head of cattle, 2907 sheep, 266 pigs, 2269 goats and 41 donkeys or horses at a conservative estimated value upward of R40 million. According to the written reply received from the MEC, the Tshwane region appears to be hardest hit, while the West Rand did not have a single reported case during this period. Recent research suggests that farmers are increasingly reluctant to report stock theft to police citing reasons such as a lack of trust in police processes and a breakdown in the relationship between farmers and police. Furthermore, the conviction rate of merely 17% of reported cases in Gauteng over the period in question brings home the realisation that farmers would rather try to stay economically viable in favour of engaging the SAPS in a burdensome and futile exercise of reporting crime. In Gauteng especially, the rural crime hotspot of the country, a conversation about the future of agribusiness can no longer be credible without also including the serious challenges farmers face regarding rural crimes. Separate and accurate statistics regarding rural crime must be maintained so that statistical analysis can be employed to enhance intelligence and police operations. Innovation in new technology such as surveillance drones, Shot Spotter and geofencing must be explored as a matter of urgency. This is an integral part of professionalising the police force, which is part of our Cnr: Grootvlei Rd, and Partridge St, Strubenvale core offer, and will also help ensure our Tel: 011 815 4700/1/2 * Fax: 086 671 7253 continued food security in Gauteng. email: cjjsteel@cjjsteel.co.za - www.cjjsteelcc.co.za

CRIME PREVENTION SAFETY IN THE HOME A FEW GENERAL RULES (2): Older people are particularly vulnerable. They must also be made aware of the dangers and, when they are left alone at home, must be protected by burglarproofing, peephole and security gates. Don‘t keep large amounts of cash or valuable jewelry in the house. If necessary, have a good safe installed, but make sure that it is firmly attached to the wall or floor. A safe must always be hidden out of sight in a cupboard, under the carpet, or behind a painting. Don‘t tell people that you have a safe. Intruders may torture you until you open it. If the criminal is not aware that you own valuable items, it will discourage him from breaking in and he will try somewhere else. If someone wishes to borrow money, say that the money is not in the house, but in the bank. Don‘t discuss private matters in the presence of strangers or domestic workers. Without any valuable information, they won‘t regard your house as a worthwhile target. When asked what most frustrated his efforts, a habitual criminal replied that it was the barking of smaller dogs which alerted the people of the house – after which they would investigate what was causing the disturbance. Keep emergency telephone numbers on hand, eg. the f ire services, police, ambulance, etc. – or memorise them. If you have a video camera, film your valuables and read out the serial numbers so that the information is captured on tape. You can even just take photographs on your cellphone. Heidelberg Mall is committed to education and community upliftment in the Heidelberg community Cangro is a proudly South African sustainable development, ‘green’ initiative in the progressive educational and food security space which teaches children how to grow food, upside down. This was Heidelberg Mall’s first Cangro Project. Cangro aims to empower children with the knowledge, skills and capacity to

successfully nurture and care for their very own upside-down tomato plant, simultaneously teaching them to nurture and care for themselves and their environment. Through innovation focused on the use of recycled material, Cangro hopes to inspire a generation of young thinkers and future entrepreneurs who can contribute in a

meaningful way to a sustainable South Africa. The Heidelberg Mall Cangro Project has been implemented at Boneha Lower Primary and Sithokomele Primary School. A total of 305 Grade 3 scholars have each received an upside down tomato plant which they will nurture over a 3 month

period leading up to a prize giving which will take place at Heidelberg Mall. The planting day included a fun performance demonstrating how to care for your plant. The school educators, Cangro team and Heidelberg Mall centre management then assisted the scholars to plant their seedlings.

Bridging the gap between theory and work environment Graduates shouldn’t be pigeonholed by their degree subject, but should be able to walk confidently into a number of careers. Clenozat Generic Skills Development is a Non-profit Organisation established after Mr. Clement Khumalo completed his Human Resource Development Degree in 2013 from North West University and noticed that there is disconnect between what Universities teach and the skills needed in market. The aim of the organisation is to imparting genius unemployed matriculants and graduates with pervasive or generic skills in order to be employable or start and run their own businesses successfully. Mr. Clement Khumalo project Director of Clenozat dedicated his family house to serve community needs with no payment. Maths and Science classes, elderly chronic activities, skills administration office and examination room are projects that take place within the house without sponsorship. “Our vision is to establish Clenozat Graduates Skills Centre that will provide working industry with required skills in the market in order to meet its demand, competent pool of Education Training and Development Specialist, such as; freelance facilitators, Assessors, Moderators, Skills Development Facilitators (SDF’s), On – the – job coaching, Off ice administrators, f inancial managers, Project managers, Logistic managers, etc. He also reveals that “A growing number of employers are no longer looking for graduates with the most impressive degree

certificates. In fact, trailblazers like Ernst & Young have removed degree classifications from their entry requirements because they do not believe that academic success is always a sign of professional success” says Mr. Clement Khumalo. We are calling unemployed graduates in all f ield of expertise that can think for themselves, integrate into fast-paced work environments, learn new ways of working and develop creative solutions to real problems to apply from 14 November to 30 November 2018 for our job related scarce skills programs that will take place in January 2019. For more information, please contact Mr. Clement Khumalo on 073 207 7688 |E: khumaloclement@gmail.com
