Grusame tragedie Die afgelope tragedie wat onlangs by die Hoërskool Vaaldriehoek plaasgevind het, het skokgolwe deur die land gestuur. Tenspyte van al die hartseer, pyn en verdriet was dit duidelik dat mense ongeag van nasie, volk of taal almal saam hul meegevoel betuig het. Miskien het die werklikheid van die afgryslike tragedie veroorsaak dat daar
met verantwoordlikheid deur ‘n kennersoog na pertinente geboue en bruê gekyk moet word. Dis veral nodig waar publiek en kinders daagliks beweeg. Ingryping is dringend nodig. Daar is verskeie bruê wat al vir twee tot drie jaar gerapporteer is soos Durban brug, een in Johannesburg, Zuurfontein, Kemptonpark om ‘n paar te noem, wat wag vir die volgende ramp.

Ouma Susie Stassen behaal ‘n mylpaal wat nie almal van ons die voorreg van sal hê om te beleef nie en vier op 18 Februarie 2019 haar 100ste verjaarsdag. Een honderd jaar, geseënd met goeie gesondheid met slegs haar sig en gehoor
wat verswak het! Ouma Susie is in 1919 gebore in die goudstad Johannesburg en voltooi haar skoolloopbaan in die goudstad. Kûhne Stassen haar hartedief vra die jawoord en die huweliksklokkies lui in 1937. In 1940 vestig die paartjie hul in die klein plattelandse dorpie Nigel. Drie prag kinders, Johann, Dirk & Ina is uit die huwelik gebore met 5 kleinkinders en ses agterkleinkinders. Na die afsterwe van Oom Kûhne in 1996 verhuis tant Susie op 77 jarige ouderdom na Hanniehof in die Tuiste vir Bejaardes op 1 Maart 2008. Die laaste paar jaar gaan sy tuis in die verswakte eenheid in die hoofgebou en is steeds in goeie gesondheid. Sy was al die jare lief vir naaldwerk en het haar eie kinders se klere gemaak en het borduurwerk baie geniet. Die welbekende boutiek, La Vogue vroeër jare in Hendrik Verwoerdstraat 18, het aan tant Susie behoort en daar het sy haar passie uitgeleef. Die Stassen egpaar was burgemeesterspaar van Nigel. As burgemeestersvrou was sy aktief betrokke by die fondsinsamelingsprojekte om die Nigel Tehuis vir Bejaardes se kapitaalbestedingsbehoeftes in die beginjare te befonds. “Dat sy 100 jaar bereik het is nog vir ons almal ‘n raaisel en kan dit net toeskryf word aan die plan van ons Hemelse Vader” vertel haar geliefdes.

Ekurhuleni fire fighters qualify for the international qualification This f irst ever group of Technical rescuers in Africa accredited by International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) studied through the City of Ekurhuleni training academy. This academy is the only SAESI accredited training provider for the full Technical Rescuers qualifications in-line with IFSAC requirements. A total of 25 firefighters, eager and ready to roll out their skills, were chosen from different fire stations across the City. They are all successful in all seventeen Technical rescue modules mainly Rope, Conf ine Space, Structural Collapse, Trench, Swift Water, Vehicle, Machinery and Technical rescue modules. During the intake, they all had to comply in accordance to IFSAC standards. Doctor‘s Medical f itness certif icate regarded as primary intake requirement. Secondary to that, Physical fitness level including endurance obstacle course should be complied with. This batch of students are the first in the country that completed and qualified as full IFSAC accredited technical rescuers. Benefits to the City is the time factor.
These specific rescuers will be an added advantage in terms of numbers to the existing ones within the City of Ekurhuleni Emergency Services. As part of skill development program, day to day rescue activities moreover vehicle rescues, will be effectively and efficiently dealt-up with either being light or heavy motor vehicles crashes. Placed strategically across the City, their skills will assist in minimizing the loss of Life and Damages to properties in the shortest possible amount of time. These are the rescuers at the grass roots level “Firefighter Level” who are readily available to respond to all eventualities natural or unnatural. The program is continuous. New other batch of firefighters is already in class for 2019 academic year. The Academy is intending to train and qualify extra 24 firefighters as Technical rescuers, come the end of 2019. The aim is to sustain the training till every firefighter qualify as a Technical rescuer within the City of Ekurhuleni. The objective will augment Emergency Services core functions of saving lives and properties as primary responsibilities.

President Cyril Ramphosa last week stated during his State of the Nation Address that the National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi would be developing a new directorate in her office to deal with serious corruption. This came after the president said the “revelations emerging from the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture and other commissions are deeply disturbing, for they reveal a breadth and depth of criminal wrongdoing that challenges the very foundation of our democratic state”. "While these commissions will in time make f indings and recommendations in line with their mandates, evidence of criminal activity that emerges must be evaluated by the criminal justice system. "Where there is a basis to prosecute, prosecutions must follow swiftly and stolen public funds must be recovered urgently.They have agreed with the new National Director of Public Prosecutions, that there is an urgent need to establish in the office of the NDPP an investigating directorate dealing with serious corruption and associated offences, in accordance with section 7 of the NPA Act” he said. In broad terms, the directorate will focus on the evidence that has emerged from the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture, other commissions and disciplinary inquiries. It will identify priority cases to investigate and prosecute and will recover assets identified to be the proceeds of corruption. The directorate will bring together a range of investigatory and prosecutorial capacity from within government and in the private sector under an investigating director reporting to the NDPP. In the longer term, they will work with the NPA and other agencies of law enforcement to develop a more enduring solution.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Audit Committee tabled the AG’s Report reviewed and discussed the Annual Financial Statements of the Municipality and its entities. The AG found an improvement in the overall outcome of performance reporting. The City received a clean audit on performance information and no audit findings were reported. In addition to this the following improvements were noted: 1) The city did not incur fruitless and wasteful, and unauthorized expenditure in the 2017-18 financial year. 2) No audit f indings on the incorrect application of SCM regulation 36, all deviations approved were in line with SCM regulation 36. 3) A decrease of R198 million (42%) in irregular expenditure from R472.6 to R274.5 million. 4) The overall financial viability assessed as good, no long term borrowings for financing day to day operations of the city. We will continue to cut irregular expenditure and maintain a zero tolerance approach to fruitless, wasteful and unauthorised expenditure. Good governance allows the City to attract much needed investment, which will allow us to grow economic activity in the City of Ekurhuleni.” said Mayor Masina.

Lightning is a sudden electrostatic discharge that occurs typically during a thunderstorm. This discharge occurs between electrically charged regions of a cloud, between two clouds, or between a cloud and the ground. This can lead to serious injury or at extreme, death if it hits someone. Lightning Safety tips: How to avoid getting hit by Lightning: Do‘s: Lightning often strikes the tallest object in the area during thunderstorms, so stay away from open fields or hilltops. Check weather forecasts daily and avoid going to a swimming pool, river, lake, or beach on rainy days and all other water sport activities. If you f ind yourself in open water during a thunderstorm, return to land immediately. Look for a low-lying area like a valley or gulley, preferably obscured from the rain. Take refuge in there until the storm passes. Crouch down with your heels touching and your head between your knees: this will make you a smaller target. If you are in a boat and cannot return to safety, drop anchor and crouch as low as possible. Turn off and stay away from wired electronics. NB: Umbrellas can increase your risk of getting hit if it is the tallest object in the area. Don‘t: During thunderstorms, lightning can travel through water pipes if it strikes your home. Do not bathe or shower until the storm has passed. Do not swimming or partake in water sports during thunderstorms. Indoor swimming is equally unsafe. Avoid all large bodies of water during thunderstorms. Do not lie down flat, always minimize your contact with the ground. Lightning can be fatal up to thirty meters away from the initial strike.
Do not stand near or under the trees or tall isolated objects. Such are more likely to be struck by lightning. Wherever you are, don’t become the highest object anywhere. Avoid using TVs, washing machines, and corded phones during thunderstorms. Warnings Do not return to the body of water until thirty minutes after the last lightning strike. Lightning can, and often does, strike the same place twice. You are not safe just because lightning recently struck an area. If your hand stands up or you feel tingling during a thunderstorm, go indoors immediately. This sign means a lightning strike is imminent. You are within striking distance of lightning if you can hear thunder. Although cell phones are safe to use during thunderstorms, landline phones are unsafe. Most lightning deaths occur during the summer months, when outdoor activity and thunderstorms reaches a seasonal high. Stay away from pools when there is lightning or thunder. Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) remains on high alert, Emergency Life Threatening Call Centre call our direct line: (011) 458 0911, cell phone 112, or National emergency number 10177. Speak clearly on the phone when reporting an emergency and provide the operators with all the necessary details required.
CRIME PREVENTION THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN Children are by nature happy and trusting. Because they regard adults as superior, they are often unaware of the motives of wrongdoers. Although children are not often robbed, they may the victim of kidnapping, rape or sexual molestation. They should therefore be educated about these dangers, as well as about how to keep safe. CHILDREN MUST Be taught never to talk to strangers – no matter how unfriendly it may seem. Never take sweets from strangers. There have been cases where criminals have befriended children over a period of time. Never get into a stranger‘s car. If a child is approached by someone in a car, he/she must run in the opposite direction. Be encouraged to tell you or their teachers if an adult wants to play with them. Be warned not to take short cuts through the veld or a park. Never play in back streets or deserted areas. They may also not accompany a stranger into deserted buildings. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TOWARDS CHILDREN You must know where your children are and at what time they will be home. Get to know your children‘s friends, and their parents and backgrounds. Children must not be allowed to sleep over at friends‘ houses unless you know their background. Don‘t allow children to wander around after dark. Don‘t “threaten” children with the police. They must understand that the police are there to protect them. If someone interferes with them, it is safer for the child to approach an adult woman for help. Nothing Is Impossible Bible University offers a variety of bachelor’s degrees and you can complete your university degree online or attend the campus in Rensburg, Heidelberg. The following Bachelor Degrees are available: Theology, Ministry, Prophetic Ministry, Apostolic Ministry, Christian Counselling, Christian Education, Christian Entrepreneurship, Christian Leadership, Christian Business Administration and Philosophy in Religious Studies. The University also offers Honors and Masters degrees as well as Doctorates. Pastor Chris Smit is the Chancellor of Nothing Is Impossible Bible University and this institution is affiliated with the widely recognized Team Impact Christian University. Their Bible courses are Spirit-anointed and available in print or downloadable digital format (e-books). It is the mission of Nothing Is Impossible Bible University to raise up Spirit-anointed
leaders who disciple nations. Classes for f irst- and second-year students take place once a week at the university’s premises in Rensburg or you can study online if you live anywhere else in South Africa or even in our neighbouring countries. Classes for third year students are once a month. If you prefer the distance learning method, text books can be couriered to you or you can opt for e-books. Exams are also not a problem and are arranged wherever the student lives. The courses that Nothing Is Impossible Bible University offer are interesting and will enhance your life. Classes already started on January 22, but you can still register for this year. You can enroll any time during the year. Nothing Is Impossible Ministries is situated on the corner of Loveday- and Nel Street Rensburg, Heidelberg (opposite the rugby field of Laerskool AG Visser and next to the fire station). High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” Most of the time, high blood pressure (HBP, or hypertension) has no obvious symptoms to indicate that something is wrong. The best ways to protect yourself are being aware of the risks and making changes that matter. Food you may eat. Bananas are one of your best options. As it turns out, foods high in potassium help manage high blood pressure because it can minimize the impact sodium has. The American Heart Association says one medium banana has about 420 milligrams of potassium, which is a signif icant amount for a relatively small amount of food. The daily recommended potassium intake for adults is 4,700 milligrams, so just one fruit will have you well on your way. Whole grains There’s a long list of whole grains to choose from, including quinoa, barley, and brown rice. Low-fat yogurt Some evidence indicates dairy is beneficial for lowering blood pressure, but you want to make sure you’re choosing the low-fat variety, as we know people with high blood pressure should avoid trans and saturated fats. The DASH Diet, which has been praised for lowering blood pressure, encourages people to incorporate low-fat dairy products into their diets. This includes low-fat yogurt and fat-free milk. Fish Everyone needs their protein, but red meat def initely isn’t the way to go if you’re trying to control high blood pressure. Because fish contains less saturated fat, it’s a good option. Plus, according to the AHA, the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. The best options for a heart-healthy diet include halibut, tuna, and salmon. Nuts Nuts contain heart-healthy omega-3 fats, focused on lowering high blood pressure. Additionally, SFGate says certain nuts could lower cholesterol, which is often a huge offender among those with high blood pressure. Legumes One study examined the role these fiberrich foods play in controlling blood pressure among patients with diabetes. Legumes have a “blood pressure-lowering effect in diabetic patients and are a great source of protein. Olive oil In addition to being good for those with arthritis, due to its anti-inflammatory properties, olive oil is loaded with hearthealthy fats. According to Mayo Clinic, the healthy fats found in olive oil are monounsaturated fatty acids. These healthy fats can help lower total cholesterol, along with LDL (bad) cholesterol. The Arthritis Foundation recommends 2 to 3 tablespoons daily, and points out that extra-virgin olive oil is a better option, as it isn’t as heavily processed. Spices You know salt can harm cholesterol and blood pressure, so curbing your desire to sprinkle it on everything is a must. The AHA recommends a daily limit of 1,500 milligrams for most adults. Shaking your salt habit use basil on fish, lamb, and lean ground meats. Use nutmeg on fruits,
potatoes, and chicken. And try rosemary on veal, lean pork, and lima beans. Lean chicken Ditching burgers and steak for good is a tall order for meat lovers. According to the AHA, chicken has less cholesterol and saturated fat than red meats. Seeing as how cholesterol and saturated fat can raise blood cholesterol and make heart disease worse, this difference really does matter. Stick to lean, skinless cuts of chicken. Leafy greens Leafy greens, like spinach and kale, may help reduce blood pressure, thanks to magnesium. Research has found taking 300 milligrams of the mineral a day for one month can elevate blood magnesium levels and reduce blood pressure. High magnesium levels in the blood were linked to improvements in blood flow, another factor associated with lowered blood pressure.” Additional foods that are high in magnesium include whole grains, beans, and nuts. Beets This mighty root veggie may actually have an immediate effect on your blood pressure, particularly when it comes to the juice. A study found drinking beet juice lowered systolic blood pressure by about 4-5 points. Pomegranate There’s good news for pomegranate lovers, a recent study suggests the juice from the fruit can really help out those with high blood pressure. Drank 16 ounces of pomegranate juice a day for four weeks experienced lowered blood pressure. It turns out the juice from those tiny seeds also has tons of antioxidants, which are great for your heart. Berries Blueberries protect against high blood pressure. If you’re not a fan of blueberries, these compounds are also found in raspberries, strawberries, and black currents. Garlic There’s good news if you put garlic in everything — it has some seriously great benef its, especially for your blood pressure. A study published in Nutrition Research found there’s a compound in garlic that can help those with hypertension. Healthy drinks to lower blood pressure. Healthy Teas, Soups & Juices Hibiscus Tea. Drinking hibiscus tea greatly reduces blood pressure in those individuals whose blood pressure is slightly elevated. Green Tea, Hawthorne Berry Tea, Olive and Leaf Tea. Beet Root Juice, Celery Juice and Pineapple Juice.
