CRIME PREVENTION RAPE
ALL WOMAN ARE POTENTIAL VICTIMS There is probably nothing more traumatic for women than rape. Not only is her body violated, but her pride, self-respect and often her will to live are seriously damaged. Because it is such a degrading crime, only around 10% of all rape cases are reported to the police. One must remember that rape is not a sexual crime, but a violent crime – where someone tries to impose his will or take out his anger on a defenceless woman. Figures show that women between ages of twelve and nineteen are most vulnerable, with toddlers and older women also being targeted. AVOID POTENTIAL RAPE SITUATIONS Always be careful. Remember that every woman is a potential victim. In 50% of cases, the victim knows the attacker. Don‘t be a target by, for example, walking alone down deserted streets. If you suspect that you are being followed, approach a shop or house for help, or call the police. Don‘t allow a stranger into your home or your car. Keep the doors locked when you are home. Have your keys ready when you get home. A woman standing scratching in her handbag, can easily be attacked from behind. Carry a whistle or alarm with you. Noise is an effective way of scaring off an attacker. When travelling, keep the fuel tank full and make sure that your vehicle is in good running order. If you often have to travel long distances at night, familiarize yourself with the basic maintenance of your vehicle, for example, how to change a wheel. Inform someone of your route and expected time of arrival. Don‘t hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers. Always keep your car doors locked. WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE RAPED Report the incident to the police immediately. Rapists repeat their crime and you can help prevent it happening again. Rapes are invested only by specially-trained woman police officers. Hand the police any evident the rapist may have left behind (a button or item of clothing). You will have to be examined by the district surgeon. This will be done sensitively and with compassion. Don‘t wash or change your clothes before being examined. Substances like semen, blood, hair, etc. are vital clues. Raped women‘s injuries are often more psychological than physical. Consult your family doctor, a social worker, women‘s group or rape clinic for assistance. Raadslid Wollaston Labuschagne die DA lid van Wyk 88, die grootste geografies wyk in Ekurhuleni, het die dames kom toespreek oor kwelpunte in en om die dorp. Wollaston het onder meer vertel van die stormwater kanaal wat aan die einde van sy lewe gekom het en vol krake en barste is en dat die projek se herstel ‘n duursame proses sal wees. Hy spreek ook sy kommer uit oor die onwettige storting van tuin en huisvullis en noem dat inwoners vervolg kan word vir die daad. Hyversoek dat die publiek sal saamwerk en foto’s sal neem wanneer sulke ongerymdhede opgemerk word en dit rapporteer. Kwessies soos besoedeling van uitlaat gasse in Pretoriusstad, vervalle geboue waaraan niks gedoen word nie en steenkool en goudmynaanlegte in en om Nigel is ook kortliks bespreek. Hierdie was vir die dames ‘n baie insiggewende debat en Wollaston moes net regstaan om al die vrae na die praatjie te beantwoord.
Wollaston Labuschagne en Tonien Botha wat hom bedank. Die dames is attent gemaak op van die probleme en besef nou die verantwoordelikheid wat met al die probleme te kampe gaan. Bogus doctor ar rested The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) said that a bogus doctor was arrested in Nigel in Gauteng following a tip-off. HPCSA spokesperson Priscilla Sekhonyana said: “The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in collaboration with the South Africa Product Regulatory Authority and the Provincial Organised Crime Unit conducted an operation resulting in the arrest of a bogus practitioner.” “Mr Makoko Thomas Tshimbombo, a Congolese national was found practising as a medical practitioner (whilst not registered with the HPCSA) at the practice of Dr Albert Kolombwa, who is registered with Council.” Sekhonyana said the operation was conducted as a result of an anonymous tipoff received from a member of the community.

Meer as 47 mense is in hegtenis geneem en aangekla van openbare geweld en is vrygelaat op borgtog.

Once Parliament reopens after the general elections in May this year, I will write a follow up letter to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Tradi-tional Affairs (COGTA), Zweli Mkhize, to hold the failing City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) administration to account. This, as the failing CoE is purposely avoiding answering Parliamentary ques-tions in order to prevent further embar-rassment and humiliation with regard to their dismal service delivery record.I have asked seven questions in Parliament relating to the daily functioning of the City of Ekurhuleni. The questions we asked related to: The number of vehicles the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) has for each precinct throughout the metro, the number out of commission and whether norms and standards

Helping hand Dunnottar-based train manufacturer Gibela has contributed more than R170 000 worth of new furniture and bed linen to help make life a little more comfortable for the 31 residents of the Tsakane Old Age Home in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni. This follows receipt by Gibela in February this year of an appeal for assistance from the Home’s manager, Phoko Mokubung. “We were desperately in need of new beds, mattresses and bedside cabinets,” said Phoko. “We have been making do with what we’ve had since the Home opened its doors almost 28 years ago, in 1990.” Gibela came through, with 34 new beds, mattresses and bedside cabinets, as well as bed linen and comfy new lounge furniture. In terms of its constitution, the Home will ensure that the old beds, mattresses, etc will be refurbished and offered to other institutions in need. Gibela’s support for the Home forms part of the company’s economic development (ED) programme, a key contractual ‘deliverable’ to its customer, PRASA. More specif ically, it flows from the community development component of
the ED programme. “The Home ‘ticked all of the boxes’ for us,” said Gibela’s Communications Director, Pam Radebe, on a visit last week. “The starting point in our relationship was a well-motivated appeal for assistance; an in-situ inspection showed us this is an institution that is well-run by people with ‘heart’, and that it enjoys the support of a ‘stretched’ community that cares about it. The Home is run by a community-based voluntary organisation, the Tsakane Society for the Care of the Aged and receives a monthly grant from the Department of Social Development. They have local doctors providing for the home with their services, pro bono, on a routine basis, for example; and local schoolchildren regularly provide entertainment for their residents. A member of the community, not exactly a youngster himself, comes in daily Mondays to Fridays for several hours to help maintain an impressive vegetable garden at the back of the Home’s premises. Produce from the garden helps to supply the Home’s kitchen.

Any professional and eff icient organisa-tion should have all this information at their fingertips. The failure to do so only re-confirms what the residents of the City Of Ekurhuleni experience daily, an incompetent and chaotic Metro that simply does not know what it is doing. Residents are subjected to water and power outages, potholes, inconsistent refuse collection, and a general decay within the Metro. I believe that the situation is more sinister than simply not having the information at hand. The Metro simply does not want to answer the questions as they will be exposed for being incompetent.
