Story of hope Freedom Recovery Centre wowed Nigel with their 10th Annual General Meeting which took place on Saturday May 4 at the Nigel Town Hall. Binnelanders actor, Hykie Berg acting as Dr Conrad Bester, was the keynote speaker. The meeting was well attended and the Board of FRC gave feedback on the Centre’s progress and performance during their 2018/2019 fiscal year. The CEO of FRC, Pastor Derick Matthews elaborated on the functioning and growth and also announced their new private treatment centre. In addition to the existing centre that was established in 2008, which now houses 52 subsidized beds, an additional private treatment centre was established which will concentrate their focus on private and medical aid funded clients. Hykie Berg then enthused people with his life story and his personal journey he had with addiction. Berg conveyed in his testimony how "God came for him and set him free". He openly talked about his drug addiction. He began experimenting with drugs in grade 8 in Die Wilgers High School (in the east of Pretoria). I became a very dodgy guy." Berg said at age 19 he was a complete heroin addict on the streets of Hillbrow. At 21, while in a rehabilitation centre in Cape Town, he realised what he wanted to do with his life. "I called my father, a senior lawyer, and told him I want to go study drama." It was refreshing and encouraging to hear a public f igure speak so openly about where his addiction has taken him and his long tedious road to recovery. Four of FRC’s board members has received awards of excellence for being part of the FRC Board in excess of 10 years.

They are Cyril Matthews, Telgie Brink and Felix Smith. Marthie Matthews has been awarded a plaque post humus for the role she played in FRC and its development. Hykie Berg presented the awards. Freedom Recovery Centre also recognized recovering addicts for their recovery, and 172 certificates in total was awarded to people whose recovery spans a period between 6 months to 13 years. The ceremony included recovering addicts who lost their lives after rehabilitation to causes other than addiction. Freedom Recovery Centre is a drug and

alcohol rehabilitation centre. They are registered in terms of the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act, Act 70 of 2008. They currently offer 52 subsidized beds and 30 beds for clients on medical aid on a variety of programs ranging from 6 weeks to 24 weeks. They also offer aftercare services in terms of halfway houses and support groups. For more information they can be reached on info@freedomrecoverycentre.co.za or you can contact Pastor Derick Matthews on 078-465-4243.

The tallies up on the large leader board at the IEC’s national results centre in Pretoria, place the African National Congress (ANC) in the lead with 57.21% of the votes, the Democratic Alliance (DA) at 21.84% of the votes and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at 10.08%. These are, so far, the leading three parties in the race for the national government. They are followed by the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) at 3.0%, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), which is currently standing at 2.89%,African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) with 0.92% of the votes and the United Democratic Movement (UDM) at 0.53%. Over 26 million voters were registered to vote in Wednesday’s elections, but the Electoral Commission count thus far puts the voter turnout at 65.44%. Political parties went into the polls with different targets. The ANC wanted to stay in power with over 60% of the voters support; the DA wanted to grow its party support, while the EFF was hoping to double their support. However, so far the biggest surprise in these elections is the performance of the VF Plus which has gained more voters in the provinces. In the hotly contested Gauteng province, only 55.83% of voting districts have been captured, where the ANC seems to be skating on thin ice by gaining 50.62% of the votes, the DA is at 27.27%, the EFF at 14.18%, the VF Plus at 3.82%.

About 40% of people world-wide have allergies, either simple or complex. I am going to give your insight into the spiritual, psychological and physical mechanisms that produce allergies. I believe that this knowledge will help set you free from allergies and enable you to take your life back. In this chapter I’m going to take you on a journey into the Bible, into the physiology of your body and right into your bone marrow because allergies are a bone marrow issue. I’m going to show you how the thoughts that you have meditated on long term have led to the physical manifestation of an allergy. Parts of the body affected by allergies are: • Nose (Allergic Rhinitis) – hay fever • Eyes (Conjuctivitis) – hay fever • Skin – rashes, atopic dermatitis, hives, urticaria (which is an eruption of itching wheals), eczema. • Stomach and intestines (Food allergy) – vomiting, cramps and diarrhea. • Lungs – asthma. A life threatening reaction called anaphylaxis can occur where the person can’t breathe because the airways get blocked by swelling of the tissues. How An Allergy Develops (Type 1 Hypersensitivity Reaction) There are seven words in Proverbs 17 v 22 that are the insight into all allergies. They don’t teach this scripture in medical school because medical schools don’t use the Bible to understand disease, because science only believes what it can see. I’m thankful to science because it allows me to see what God has created. However it was through the teaching of Henry Wright that I got this insight into allergies: Proverbs 17 v 22: “A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.” (Amp Bible). Right here in the Bible it says that a broken spirit dries the bones. It doesn’t say a soul, it says a broken spirit. Here we can see a connection between the health of the human spirit and the health of the bones. Now think with me through this: “What is drying of the bones?” I suppose we could think of osteoporosis which is deterioration or weakening of the bones due to loss of calcium and bone density. But we are not talking about osteoporosis, we’re talking about allergies. In Proverbs 14 v 30 it says that envy and jealousy cause rottenness of the bones which is what osteoporosis is. But we are not talking about rotting of the bones; we are talking about drying of the bones. So if it is not osteoporosis, what is left? Bone marrow! Now what is in bone marrow? In the marrow is the origin of your blood: your blood is manufactured in your bone marrow. Your blood consists of red and white blood cells. In allergies you don’t have anemia which is a lack of red blood cells – the red blood cells are ok. So what is left? White bloods cells which is what makes up the immune system. When you have a weakened immune system you have a lowered number of white cells in your blood. Drying of the bones means a weakened immune system. What compromises or weakens the immune system? It doesn’t say pesticides or chemicals or certain foods destroy the immune system – it says a broken spirit destroys the immune system. Right here in the Bible we see a connection between our spirituality and our body chemistry, right down to the health of our immune system. Proverbs 17 v 22 says that a broken spirit dries the bones. What is a broken spirit? In the Bible the word “heart” means “the spirit” or “the soul and spirit” depending on the context that the word heart is used. So we could say that a broken spirit is a broken heart. In Luke 4 v 18 Jesus said that He came to heal the broken hearted: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified Me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor and the afflicted; He has sent me

to bind up and heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives…” God wants to heal the broken heart. What is a broken heart? A broken heart or a broken spirit can occur in a person’s life spiritually when they were damaged by someone who was supposed to love them and didn’t. What are some of the life circumstances that can contribute to the broken heart? Well firstly in childhood we may not have been covered or loved like we should have been. Our families can be very dysfunctional. Our marriages can be very dysfunctional. What does dysfunctio-nal mean to you and me? It means we’re not at peace with each other. We don’t feel safe with each other. Henry Wright has dealt with hundreds of people with allergies both simple and complex over the past 20 years. He has found that multiple allergies follow a class of people who have been victims of one or more or sometimes all of the following f ive life circumstances, beginning in childhood: Emotional abuse. Verbal abuse. Physical abuse. Sexual abuse. Performance, perfectionism and driven-ness – many times as children we grow up in families in which we’re accepted and loved based on our achievements. These five areas can produce fear that causes allergies. The fear is a result of the break up in the human relationship between the person who has the allergies and another person who is usually a close family member. The person does not feel safe in relationships and is not able to give and receive love without fear. In severe allergies like MCS/EI, the people are rooted in great insecurity, great mistrust and great fear. In the Bible we see a connection between our spirituality and body chemistry, right down to the health of our immune system. The other part of it is occultism. If you or family members in generations before you have been involved in occultism, this needs to be repented of because it can block healing. Remember allergies can also be genetically inherited. When you have fear and anxiety in your thought life coming out of a broken heart, you are in stage 2 and 3 of stress. In this toxic state there are high levels of the hormone Cortisol in your blood stream which damages the immune system. Remember, the cells of the immune system (which are the white blood cells) are formed in the bone marrow. When you deal with your broken heart through forgiving the person who hurt you and you remove the fear and anxiety from your thought life through renewing your mind with the Word of God, you will no longer be in stage 2 and 3 of stress. Therefore the secretion of cortisol will stop and the T cells will be given a chance to regenerate. When the number of T cells increase, the B cells come back into balance and are no longer over-active. Therefore the production of excessive amounts of IgE antibodies stop and mast cells are no longer activated. Therefore less histamine is produced, the symptoms of allergies disappear and allergies are a thing of the past. It is as simple as that. By Dr Michelle Strydom MD The good news is this: you are not allergic to anything! Let’s deal with the Root of your Allergy - Go and renew your mind and be set free in Jesus Name! Skokkende ontnugtering - mense soek antwoorde!

Saves lives on the road

Approximately 1 million road accidents are reported each year, many of which are tragically fatal. As local authorities and stakeholders continue to campaign for safer roads, motorists are encouraged to do what they can to help avert future incidents and

fatalities. “With driver error the greatest contributor, many accidents could be avoided simply through behavioural changes, more specifically addressing risky and irresponsible driving and by good vehicle maintenance” says Brett Ferreira, Franchise Executive, Motus Aftermarket Parts (MAP). Ferreira offers road safety advice: Avoid distracted driving There has been a great deal of publicity aimed at the dangers of texting while driving. Yet any activity that diverts the driver’s attention endangers not only the driver but passengers and bystanders as well. Eating, applying make-up, or even talking on a cellphone hands-free are all distractions from the task at hand: keeping one’s eyes and mind on the road. Stick to the speed limit Accidents can happen in a heartbeat, even in ideal driving conditions. Speed limits are carefully evaluated and assigned to improve response time; slower limits are imposed in high risk areas such as high accident zones, areas prone to fog and flooding or to accommodate animal or pedestrian crossing. Obeying speed limits drastically reduces the risk of collision.

TEL: 011 819 1575 / 082 690 7591

Ensuring everyone wears a seatbelt regardless of where they are in the vehicle reduces the chances of injury and death significantly. Don’t drive impaired Multiple factors affect driving ability. With so many of these beyond our control, it’s critical to take responsibility for what we can. Never operate a vehicle under the influence of drugs, alcohol and certain over-thecounter medications. Depressants, narcotics, stimulants, and hallucinogens all can alter vision, responsiveness, and thinking skills. Drugs quickly affect reaction time, coordination, and judgement. If you’re not sure, rather hand over your keys to a designated driver. Perform regular vehicle maintenance ‘While human error is the biggest cause of car accidents on the road, badly maintained vehicles also contribute to the national road toll every year.” says Ferreira. ‘It’s every driver’s responsibility to make sure the vehicle they are operating is well maintained and roadworthy. Worn parts might not be the cause of an actual collision but they could contribute to the chain of events leading up to a crash. Letting scheduled maintenance slide essentially puts your safety and that of those around you at risk.’ Ferreira adds that one should have their vehicle checked at a reliable company. Tyres Tyre failure is one of the most commonly cited causes of vehicular failure. A blown tyre results in the immediate loss of control; worn tread offers less traction on the road and reduces braking effectiveness. Inspect tread and use a tyre gauge to determine air levels to ensure they are always in line with the owner’s manual. Fluids Fluids keep your vehicle running smoothly and prevent maintenance issues from arising, all these levels must be checked and replenished. Replacing worn-out oil improves engine performance, reduces fuel consumption

and reduces the risk of engine damage. Transmission fluid keeps gears of the car running smoothly. Coolant prevents overheating by keeping the vehicle cool. Brake fluid is essential for keeping brakes functioning properly. If brake fluid levels are low, the brake pads will not be as responsive, which could be catastrophic. Visibility Dust and grime on car windows can obstruct the driver’s view. Dirty, worn wiper blades do more harm than good. Make a habit of keeping your vehicle clean, particularly windows and side mirrors and check windshield wipers and wiper motors to ensure a clear view at all times. Also check headlights and indicators to ensure they are all in working order as this improves driver visibility while ensuring your vehicle is visible to others as well, particularly at night, in rain, or in fog when the risk of road accidents is much higher. Suspension and Transmission Faulty steering and suspension could see you at the wheel of a vehicle you are unable to control. Sudden transmission or engine failure might leave you stranded and at risk of collision. It’s important to have these components assessed regularly by a technician as wear and tear here is far more insidious than that to tyres and brakes. Emergency kit Be prepared for unexpected roadside breakdowns by packing a simple emergency kit. This should include flashlights, roadside flares, a first-aid kit, a tool kit, jumper cables and a blanket. Adopting a proactive stance toward driver behaviour and vehicle maintenance means less risk all round. ‘We care about the safety of people on the road, it’s for this reason that we’re a passionate advocate for driver education around safe, well maintained vehicles.’ concludes Ferreira.

As part of preparing winter fire season, Devon Fire Protection Association has roped in Community Fire Awareness Officer Lerato Mokwena to workshop farmer workers on basic firefighting. These series of workshops were held in Devon. Fire awareness education, Lerato says is the core pillar of integrated f ire management. She says basics focused on the dos and don’ts on fire activities. This, she said will help farmers avoid fatal fire incidents in their area. ‘‘I am glad that farmers in the area are working closely hence they arranged these workshops,’’ quipped Mokwena. In the future, she said more training and workshops are needed to strength the capacity of the farm workers. More lives, she says will be saved through these intervention. Farmer workers according Mokwena were excited about the workshops. ‘‘Some of them shared personal stories about their encounter with f ires. From now on they know what to do to address f ire challenges. They are not firefighters,’’ she explained. Barbara Lang a chairperson of Devon FPA was grateful that the workshops were relevant for their employees. She said there is value out of these workshops and employees understand what they need to do on farms.

NOTICE / KENNISGEWING NOTICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AUTHORISATION PROCESS Notice is hereby given in terms of Regulation 41(2) of the 2014 Environmental Impact Assessment (“EIA”) Regulations (as amended), under Section 24(5) of the National Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998) (“NEMA”) of an Environmental Authorisation application for the proposed Phase 2 upgrade and expansion of a Bulk Water Pipeline in Nigel, Gauteng

Graad 9 top 10 leerders. Elaine Hartkopf, Jennifer Klein, Shaazia Patel, Hanna van Zyl, Mpilo Ngidi, Monja Britz, JD Haasbroek, Abigail Gabrielli, Cusandra la Grange en Pieter Snyman.

The proposed project is an upgrade and expansion of the existing bulk water pipeline providing water to the Nigel area from the Dunnottar reservoir. The existing pipeline will be upgraded to a 710mm High-density polyethylene (HDPE) Class 12.5 PE100 line and steel pipes with a diameter of 600mm will also be installed. The peak throughput of the bulk water infrastructure will increase to 500 litres/second at a velocity of 1.7 meters/second. It is important to note that a section of the proposed pipeline has already been installed as part of Phase 1 of the pipeline development and therefore, the proposed project will entail Phase 2 which will complete the remainder of the pipeline. Furthermore, Phase 2 of the proposed project will commence in two segments namely Phase 2 Part 1 spanning over 1296 m and Phase 2 Part 2 spanning over 4325 m. The proposed pipeline will be located in a road reserve for part of the way but will also cross vacant land in some areas. The proposed pipeline development will take place to the north west of Nigel and east of Duduza and to the south of Dunnottar. This pipeline crosses Proton Road in the south and runs partly parallel to Carr Road and the M63 (Nigel-Dunnottar Road) before crossing the M45 (Vlakfontein Road) in the north. The pipeline ends at the existing reservoir in Dunnottar which has a capacity of 20Ml. The proposed pipeline development will start from coordinates 26°24’54.87"S; 28°28’9.88"E and end at 26°24’52.96"S; 28°27’27.40"E for part 1. Part 2 of the pipeline will start at 26°23’14.34"S; 28°26’36.78"E and end at 26°21’6.04"S; 28°25’55.26"E Prior to the development of the proposed pipeline, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will have to acquire the following Environmental Authorisation and necessary licences from the relevant Government Departments for the proposed pipeline: 1. Environmental Authorisation: an Environmental Basic Assessment (“BA”) process in terms of the NEMA read with the EIA Regulations, 2014 (GN R 982 of 8 December 2014 as amended) will be undertaken for the proposed development. The following listed activities are applicable to the proposed project: Activities 45 of Listing Notice 1 of GN R 983 and Activities 12 and 23 of Listing Notice 3 of GN R 985. The environmental authorisation application was submitted for approval to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (“GDARD”) on 25/03/2019. 2. Water Use Licence: the project will entail the undertaking of water uses as listed in section 21 of the National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) (“NWA”) for 21(c) and 21(i) water uses. A risk assessment will however be undertaken and should the risk class of the proposed pipeline be low, it will be motivated for a general authorisation registration in terms of Government Notice Regulation (GN R 509 of 26 August 2016) for the water uses. This motivation and supporting documentation will be submitted to the Department of Water and Sanitation (“DWS”).

CRIME PREVENTION RAPE WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE ATTACKED Because attackers and rapists are unpredictable, it is only possible to give general guidelines. Try to talk yourself out of the situation. Talk about the attacker’s problems and allow him to talk about them, be sympathetic, play on his feelings, put him at ease – and escape as soon as the opportunity presents itself. If you are approached by a group, talk to the one who appears to have the mildest nature. Don‘t beg for mercy. The more frightened you appear, the braver the attacker will become. If you are attacked in a public place – and think that you may be heard – make as much noise as possible. Escape if the attacker is distracted. If it is clear that you are not going to get away, there are two options: SUBMISSION: Submission is in no way an indication that you are consenting. Since you are being faced with violence, and possibly death, let him have his way. He may lose interest as soon as he has you in his power. Some victims have pretended to have a heart attack or epileptic fit. Whether you succeed, unfortunately depends on the attacker‘s personality. RESISTANCE: Resistance may save you the trauma of rape, but it could also incite the attacker to greater violence. If you resist violently, try to seriously injure or maim your attacker. Remember, your primary objective remains escape. Before considering violence, make sure that it is your last option. Intense resistance could lead to greater violence on the part of the attacker. Be calm and plan your movements. Wild kicking, scratching and biting will have little effect on him, will tire you, and may make him even angrier. RECOMENDATIONS Wait for the right opportunity and then act quickly and decisively. Don‘t chance a kick between the legs without knowing what you are doing – it seldom works. Men respond instinctively to such attacks. If you cannot succeed accurately and quickly, you will not beat his defensive reflex action. Rather grab one of his little fingers and bend it backwards. This is painful and will knock him off balance. Press your thumbs into his eye sockets. Aim for and hit him in the solar plexus – between the ribs just below the breastbone. Hit him hard on the throat. If you manage to stop him, run. Remember that this is your primary objective and that you may not get a second chance. our support site to help you. You look great! Have a look at the event photos. Want to know more? Read about us and the event. Our links page connects you to local and national running resources. This event is run by volunteers who love running; if you want to join us, find out more on our volunteering page. Age Grading All parkrun events use Age Grading to help athletes compare results. Age Grading takes your time and uses the world record time for your sex and age group to produce a score (a percentage). This score allows you to compare your personal performance against other people's performances even though they might be a different age and a different sex to you - the higher the score the better the performance. The scores can also be compared across different race distances - to allow you to, for example, compare a 5km time against

a marathon.Summary event statistics are at the bottom of every page. This is a point to point course. The course starts at the back of Horse and Hound. The route will start in an eastern direction till we reach a fence. The route then follows the fence in a southern direction up to where the fence ends. The route will then follow a zig zag pattern going north and south. The route then extends to the western part of the park and returns to the finish point. The course is completely run in a park with veld and some dirt trails. The course is mostly flat with small dips and hills. Please remember that the parkrun uses shared paths. For the continued success of the event, please give way to other park users. This won't hurt your time, it won't stop you from getting a PB and it will make sure everyone continues to enjoy the event. Any other questions?
