Minet loses the battle The 36-year-old Dunnottar mother, Minet Fox, who was desperately waiting for a kidney transplant, died on Thursday morning last week of a heart attack.
Minet had been undergoing dialysis twice a week for about four years. She was the first on the area list for a donor, but a heart problem delayed this and she was due to see the heart specialist last week, hoping for an improvement. She was looking forward to a kidney transplant in about eight months time and talked of getting back to work and leading a normal life again. Years ago Minet was told she would never fall pregnant, yet she gave birth to a little boy, Durelle, three years ago. She even took a part-time job during her illness but had to give it up because of the frequent trips to the hospital. She also started a home industry selling cleaning products, but it all became too much to handle. Her mother died in 2004 of kidney failure and Minet was always sad that she never lived to see her grandson. She died in her flat and was found by her brother Sean and his wife Bonny, who are both shocked. Sean said she had been very happy the previous evening and didn’t complain about anything. Despite having kidney failure, Minet was al-
ways cheerful and optimistic about the future. She also had contact with another victim of kidney failure, Mariaan Kinnear of Nigel

Even where we work for an item (or money to buy the item) all materialistic items are made out of material that God created. Most if not all Christians do acknowledge this provision. But how many of us think of the emotional support we receive from God? Jesus said that He would leave the “Comforter” and He has kept the promise by leaving the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide us. What we all need to be aware of is that the Holy Spirit often supports us without us even realizing it. Just think of the times that you have been struggling to handle an emotional issue and somehow you have come through the ordeal – that was God helping you to handle the problem. Take some time to think about all the emotional ups and downs you experienced just this last month and thank God for His help and support given to you free of charge and with love. We take too many things for granted. What about spiritual matters? Once again we often feel that God has “deserted” us yet when we think of it we see how God opens our mind and soul to constant Spiritual Growth. This may be in the form of the Sunday message you get from the church service or maybe the message you received during your quiet time. Maybe you got an answer while speaking to a friend about a message or reading. Once again we realize that God has not deserted us but we have rather taken too much for granted. This experience of “no power” has definitely helped me to think about life and all that we have and to take some time to acknowledge all that God provides. Join me for just this week and take time to think of all that we have (at the end of each day) and I am sure that you will come to the same conclusion as me – we are blessed and need to stop taking things for granted.

Busy time for Nigel SPCA In one day the Nigel SPCA kennels took in more than 30 dogs either for adoption or strays. The strays were mainly male dogs who were wandering around the Nigel and Dunnottar streets chasing female canine. The un-sterilised females are becoming a big problem in the areas and pet owners are warned that it is against the by-laws to have an unsterilized dog on the premises. This causes male dogs to jump over walls, fight and run the streets, which often results them being hit by vehicles. In another case six goats are dead in the Jameson Park area, because of being attacked by dogs. Four were found dead by the owner and the other two had to be taken to be euthanased by the SPCA.

Jy is God se perfek gevormde meesterstuk, sy volmaakte en deeglik afgewerkte produk. Jy is uitgestuur om Sy heerlikheid te openbaar en Sy eer aan die wêreld rondom jou ten toon te stel. Jou verantwoordelikheid is nou om die beste jy vir God te wees. Jy is die enigste jy wat God het. Hy het nog nooit ‘n ander een soos jy gehad nie en Hy sal nooit ‘n ander een soos jy hê nie. Things you should know about the Census Be advised to be co-operative during the Census - but to be cautious and not become a victim of fraud and identity theft. Eventually more than 140 000 Census workers will count every person in South Africa., starting on October 10. They will gather information about each person living at each address. Including name, age . gender, race and other relevant data. The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a Census worker and a con artist. If a Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before answering any questions. You should never invite anyone you don’t know into your home. Census workers are currently knocking to verify addrerss information. Do not give your identity number, credit card, banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the
Census. No matter what they ask, you really only need to tell them how many people live at your address. While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such as a salary range, you do not have to answer anything at all about your financial situation. The Census Bureau will not ask for bank account or credit card numbers, nor will employees collect donations. Anyone asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau. Remember the Census Bureau has decided not to work with ACORN on gathering this information. No ACORN worker should approach you saying that he or she is from the Census Bureau. Eventually Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail or in person at home. Hoërskool J. W. Luckhoff het die eerste hoërskool in Heidelberg – en waarskynlik Suid-Afrika - geword om die Vryheid van die skool aan Jesus Christus toe te ken. In ‘n seremonie op 9 September wat deur past. Joyce McCartney gelei is, het die skoolhoof Douglas Jackson en Joy Ratshidi, die hoofseun, daarna die simboliese vryheid-
sleutel op ‘n esel geplaas. Jackson het ander skole uitgedaag om dieselfde te doen en die wens uitgespreek dat dit soos ‘n veldbrand sal versprei. Die skool se tekenning van die simboliese Vryheid aan Jesus volg nadat Heidelberg in 2009 die eerste dorp in die land geword het om die vryheid van die dorp aan Jesus toe te ken.

Met verwysing na my vorige artikel en die belangrikheid daarvan dat kinders se grondwetlike regte beskerm word, handel ek graag met die “beste belange van kinders”, soos, deur die wet voorgeskryf word. Voordat daar enige oorweging gegee word aan enige ander party se reg sal daar altyd eers gekyk word na wat in die beste belang van die kind is.
Hoe sal daar bepaal word wat in die beste belang van ‘n kind is wanneer die ouers byvoorbeeld sou skei en albei ouers die wens uitspreek dat die kind by hul woon? Die Gesinsadvokaat met behulp van ‘n maatskaplike werkster sal eerste bepaal wat is die persoonlike verhouding tussen die kind en die ouers. Daar sal dan ook gekyk word na die houding van ‘n betrokke party teenoor die kind. Die kind sal hier ‘n duidelike aanwysing verskaf, aangesien die kind baie nou betrek word in die evaluasie proses. ‘n Deurslaggewende faktor is ook in hoe ‘n mate ‘n kind deur byvoorbeeld die voorgesette konflik deur sy / haar ouers geaffekteer word. As mede-houers van ouerlike regte en verpligtinge sal daar ook ondersoek ingestel word na die bydrae wat deur ‘n spesifieke ouer gemaak kan word. Hierdie bydrae is nie net finansieël van aard nie, maar ook in hoe ‘n mate daar na die kind se emosionele en intellektuele vermoë omgesien kan word. ‘n Kind se beste belang sluit ook in ekonomiese, sosiale, morele en geloofsoorwegings. ‘n Kind se emosionele behoeftes sal ook deurslaggewend wees, en sal die behoeftes en wense van ‘n kind nie sommer geïgnoreer word nie. Die effek wat enige verandering in ‘n kind se omstandighede sal hê sal deeglik ondersoek word. Dit is nie alleen van belang dat ‘n kind kontak met sy ouers het nie, maar ook die reg om kontak met broers en susters te behou. Van watter ouderdom kan daar na ‘n kind se wense en behoeftes geluister word? Daar is nie ‘n spesifieke aanduiding nie maar sal daar gekyk word na die kind se ouderdom, sy volwassenheid en ontwikkelingsvlak. Ander faktore soos byvoorbeeld ’n gebrek wat ‘n spesifieke kind mag hê of spesiale leerbehoeftes of chroniese siektes sal ook in aanmerking geneem word, wanneer die kind se beste belang bepaal moet word. ‘n Kind het die reg om in ‘n stabiele gesinsomgewing en waar dit nie moontlik is nie so na as moontlik in ‘n gesinsverband op te groei. Die omgewing waar ‘n kind dus moet opgroei moet dus gunstig wees vir sy fisiese en
geestelike ontwikkeling. ‘n Kind mag nie blootgestel word aan wanvoeding, verwaarlosing, geweld of enige ander daad wat skadelik mag wees vir sy / haar ontwikkeing nie. Indien ‘n kind dus nog te jonk is om sy wense uit te spreek sal daar na al die faktore soos reeds genoem, gekyk word. ‘n Kind wat in staat is om aan enige proses deel te neem, se wense sal egter deeglik oorweeg word met inagneming van al die ander faktore. Dit gebeur egter daagliks dat ouers kinders beïnvloed of omkoop ten einde hulle te oorreed om by ‘n spesifieke party te woon. Die gesinsadvokaat en maatskaplike werkers kan egter baie gou bepaal wanneer dit die geval is, en dit is juis vir hierdie rede waarom daar dan ‘n aanbeveling gemaak word vir die Hof rondom ‘n kind se versorgings posisie. ‘n Bevoegde Hof sal in die meeste gevalle so ‘n aanbeveling volg en dit is slegs in uitsonderlike gevalle waar die Hof sal afwyk van hierdie aanbeveling deur die Gesinsadvokaat of ander professionele persoon. Wat is die gevolg indien ‘n party ‘n Hofbevel verontagsaam? Nie alleen lei dit tot konflik tussen die partye nie, maar word die “beste belang” van ‘n kind daardeur aangetas. ‘n Party kan argumenteer dat ‘n kind byvoorbeeld na ‘n naweek besoek nie wil teruggaan na die ander ouer nie, en graag langer wil kuier. Wat staan my dan te doen? Dit is juis wanneer daar gehoor gegee moet word aan die Hofbevel of aanbeveling van die Gesinsadvokaat. Die kind se beste belang is reeds oorweeg, en is stabilitieit en dissipline ‘n belangrike oorweging in die beste belang van ‘n kind. ‘n Kind kan ook ‘n situasie uitbuit waar die verantwoordelike partye nie by ‘n ooreenkoms of Hofbevel hou nie, en sal die kind ernstige emosionele skade opdoen as gevolg van die onverantwoordelike optrede van sy ouers. Wat kan ‘n party doen indien ‘n Hofbevel verontagsaam word? Die vraag word daagliks aan ons gestel. Dit kom al hoe meer voor dat ‘n party ‘n kind die reg ontsê om kontak met die ander ouer te handhaaf. Fun day with a cowboy theme If you want to have a good time an support the Nigel SPCA at the same time. Then make a date for this Sunday, October 2. The fun day will be at the John Vorster Stadium . Then you’ll find real competiton in an 86-yearold Nigel woman, who speciallises in memory games and many others on her computer. Mara Venter, a resident of the Nigel Home for the Aged, has become an expert at the many games on her computer. She loves those which require memory in order to win. “You must keep your mind alert”, she says. She also loves educational games and has some which she has to get rid of the “baddies” in a game, which she admits is more difficult but very satisfying when she wins! Mara, although she uses a walking aid, believes in being as active as possible but is adamant that keeping up with current affairs is a must. She never misses the news on TV and says its important to know what is going on in the country and the world.

She also follows a number of sports and is now watching the World Rugby Cup games with much interest. She also has her favourite programmes. Apart from the computer games, Mara does crochet work – the jacket she wears in the photograph she made herself – knitting and when she visits her daughter in Johannesburg she definitely makes use of the sewing machine. “I make all my own clothes”, she says proudly. Mara also loves doing crosswords. Again she says ”Keeps your brain active and gives you general knowledge.” Mara has two daughters, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She says her great-grandchildren just think its great to play her computer games. But when asked if they beat her at the memory games, Mara just smiles broadly!

Flooding stopped but water still flows After about a year a water leak in Howeson Avenue has been attended to by the Nigel Customer Care Centre. But water is still flowing from the local point a storm water drain - down the road. The leak has been in existence for a long time and the water flowed all over Howeson Avenue, along Stanley Road, Wallace Road, Hammond Road and Seal Road. Residents said it was like a river! Howeson
Avenue and Hammond Road were being ruined by the constant flow of water and the junction of these two roads is now full of potholes. The chairperson of the local Community Police Forum, wrote a letter to the Nigel Customer Care centre about the water and the flow was fixed. However, water is still running along Howeson Avenue, coming from the storm water drain.

Call for businesses to unite A call that the different business chambers in Heidelberg work closer together in the interest of the expansion of the town in the fields of industry and business, was made when speakers addressed a breakfast working session at BAT on 15 September where the mayor of Lesedi, Clr. Lerato Maloka was the guest of honour. A plea that a hotel should also be erected to accommodate high ranking officials and visitors to the town was also raised by Council. Presently visitors have to be accommodated in different guest houses all over town. Should such a hotel be built, it could have a negative influence on guest houses that now make up the bulk of accommodating visitors to Heidelberg. Rekord understands that a group of businessmen in Heidelberg have already had interest expressed from two different hotel groups. The outgoing General Manager of BAT (British American Tobacco), Bernd Meyer who has just left South Africa after a period of four and a half years, explained that it was difficult to get involved with sponsorship and help where more than one interest group represent the business community. Mr. H. J. Marwa of Lesedi says the challenge is to get business to speak as one voice. It was also pointed out that about 37% of the

A call was made that a small body of the best business brains in Heidelberg should be involved to pave the way ahead. BAT stated that they would dearly like to get involved in helping small to medium business to get off the ground but that proper business proposals have to be tabled before they could do so.

The best of the best On Saturday, September 17th 2011, the annual Angelo Mall Super Spar Potjiekos Competition was held with a record number of entries. The Rumours team entered in a very traditional fashion, bearing the theme of a traditional tavern deriving from a squatters camp. All dishes presented were in true african tradition, comprising of marogo, e-papa and “Boerbok” served with african beer. The competition was very social with teams parading and singing. “E-Rumours Team” with Sonnette van Eck leading in dancing and singing which contributed in an excellent manner to the brilliant team spirit that ultimitately secured their place as the overall winning team.

Memorials for Adolf van Emmenis and Pieter Bouwer, two so-called joiners during the Anglo Boer War, were unveiled on the farms Rietfontein and Hartebeestfontein near Villiers on August 27, 2011. These men had deserted the Republican forces and joined forces with the British army against their former comrades. Thereby they committed high treason. Additionally, they had assisted with farm burnings and with destruction of crops and farm animals. They were blindfolded and executed on August 24, 1901. Glad those cold nights are over? Or maybe you have a car which purrs into action even when the engine is at freezing point. I’m not so lucky and so the winter resulted in treating the car like a baby. I admit I used to try talking to it first. Neighbours probably thought I was odd. “Please, please go little car,” said – quietly at first. Then annoyance came in and I ended up shouting at it, saying things like “If you don’t go now I will send you to the scrap yard”. It didn’t work and we all know that terrible dragging sound when the battery agrees with the engine. Then someone suggested covering the engine with a blanket at night and this would definitely keep it warm. I did it, feeling now that it’s a baby on four wheels instead of two legs. But others also saw this as a chance to keep warm during the cold nights. Opened the bonnet and the blanket was covered in tiny holes and much distasteful evidence that mice had found a great sleep-over. But the engine also responded and it was like music to the ears. I almost felt happy about the mice being snug. Then I met a woman who knew all about cars. I was impressed. She asked me why I didn’t clean the engine and proceeded to tell me which parts to remove and clean. I had a good idea where the plugs where, but when she got on about carbs and filters etc. I was lost. I admired her because she said she always knew what a car’s problem was and was able to fix it. This has prompted me to campaign for all girls to be taught car mechanic basics from Grade Five. There is nothing so embarrassing as asking a guy why the car is making a certain noise, see that superior almost pitying look on his face and then tell you how much it will cost before you know what the noise is. I also hate people who keep telling me to wash the car. In the past whenever I have had this done something goes wrong with it. Its like its telling me “leave me alone or I won’t go”. So I don’t take any chances.

There was a good response from people of all ages to the five-kilometer walk organised by the Dunnottar Community Policing Forum. From toddlers to seniors, they were all willing to join in the event, which also promoted friendship as well as raising funds for the CPF. Many bought illuminated sticks to wave on the way but there were plenty of marshalls guiding the walkers. Some of the toddlers started well but were very glad that their moms had brought along their prams to cover the distance. At the finish the walkers all received medals and there was a braai to enjoy with plenty of boerewors. Everyone enjoyed the event which had a great friendly atmosphere.

Valke en Griffons gelykop in Nigel In ‘n harde, taai stryd wat soms sprankelende rugby opgelewer het, het die 0.19 spanne van die Valke en die Griffons in die gesogte Curriebekerkompetisie ‘n gelykopuitslag van 32 elk afgedwing toe hulle mekaar op 17 September die stryd in die John Vorster Stadion in Nigel aangesê het. Die Valke het eerste bloed geruik toe Adriaan van der Nest na 9 minute ‘n strafskop deur die pale geklits het. Twee spanlede wat van Nigel kom, het hul klub eer aangedoen deur elk ‘n drie te druk, nl. Ollie le Roux wat die eerste drie vir die Valke in die 17 de minuut gedruk het en Corrie Duvenhage. Met rustyd was die Valke met 15-12 voor. Een van die hoogtepunte was toe Ruan Matthee van die Valke met ‘n kraglopie, 15 minute na die aanbreek van die tweede helfte, feitlik van die halflyn af deurgebreek het om die skaal weer gelyk te laat balanseer op 22 elk nadat Adriaan van der Nest die drie verdoel het.
