Madelene vertel dat Juan-Pierre, aan veelvoudige sklerose ly en dat hy ‘n rugoperasie gehad het toe hy in Brakpan ‘n leerder aan die Hoër Tegniese Skool was. Hy wou hom nie deur die terugslag laat onderkry nie en het besluit dat hy met deursettingsvermoë en harde werk sy pad in die rugby wêreld sou oop trap. Aan die einde van sy skoolloopbaan is hy beloon toe die Poemas hom in hul 0/21 span opgeneem het. Sy toekoms vorentoe het goed gelyk, totdat hy onlangs eers ‘n prikkelgevoel in sy bene gekry het. Dit het al erger geword, hy het lam aan die een kant geraak en hospitalisasie – en ‘n moontlike rugoperasie is nou sy voorland. A Christ centred marriage is a marriage that is sure to last a lifetime I received this email and was asked to forward it to as many people as possible. It is so good that I decided to publish it so that everyone had an opportunity to read it. Please read on….. When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes. Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why? I avoided her question. This made her angry. That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her! With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years

of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now. The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn’t have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane. When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again. In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn’t want anything from me, but needed a month’s notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month’s time and she didn’t want to disrupt him with our broken marriage. This was agreeable to me. she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day. She requested that every day for the month’s duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door every morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request. I told Jane about my wife’s divorce conditions. She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully. My wife and I hadn’t had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don’t tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office. On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn’t looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it’s time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day. But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a

step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn’t noticed that our life lacked intimacy. I drove to office.... jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind...I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore. She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won’t divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn’t value the details of our lives, not because we didn’t love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart. Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away. At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I’ll carry you out every morning until death do us apart. That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed - dead. My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push thru with the divorce.— At least, in the eyes of our son— I’m a loving husband.... The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse’s friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!”

Mag wheels theft

GPF in demokratiese opswaai

An increase in the theft of magnesium alloy wheels is being experienced in Nigel, mostly in the Glenvarloch and Noycedale areas. The thefts are mainly committed during the night and residents wake up to find their vehicles was on bricks and their mag wheels missing. If you are staying in the Glenvarloch or Noycedale areas and your car has mags on, then you are at risk of becoming a victim. David Niebuhr, chairman of the Nigel Community Policing Forum says residents should take precautions against their car wheels being stolen. He advises people to park their cars in a secure garage and definitely not outside or even in the yard. The criminals will poison dogs and jump walls to get to your wheels. “If you are unable to lock your vehicle in a garage at night, make sure it is parked in a well lit area”, says Niebuhr. By doing this it will be more difficult for the culprits to steal the wheels without being seen. People committing these crimes are more than likely on foot. This would suggest that they are staying in the neighbourhood. Someone must know something. There must also be a place where they are trying to sell these mag wheels. “Help us get this information, “ says Niebuhr. “We need to put a stop to this.” If you have any information that could assist the SAPS in identifying these thieves, please share it with the police. Ekurhuleni reports that only 51 union members did not report for duty on the third day of the strike. Small groups of SAMWU workers were spotted in Alberton and some other towns. But there was no violence or damage to property. Those who were on strike in the Licensing Department are in administration, drivers’ examiner cashiers and clerks.

Divorce be informed by JP Okes

Following on from my last article, and because of the interest shown in the subject by readers, I have decided to deal with a few more issues relating to divorce cases. The issues are dealt with in the format of some of the most common questions that our office has had to answer in divorce matters: 1. Can I get a maintenance order before I am divorced? The short answer to this question is yes. If your divorce matter is being dealt with in the High Court, then your attorney may bring an application to the High Court in terms of Rule 43. The purpose of the application is to obtain an order in terms whereof your spouse is compelled to pay a certain amount of maintenance until the divorce is finalized. This application can also be used to obtain an order relating to the “custody” of any minor children. The Application can be heard within a matter of weeks. Whether or not a summons has been issued for divorce, you may also approach your local Maintenance Court with an application for maintenance. The maintenance officer will address a letter to your spouse, inviting your spouse to attend a meeting with the maintenance officer and yourself to discuss the payment of maintenance. Should your spouse not attend the meeting, or should you be unable to come to an arrangement at the meeting, then the maintenance officer should summons your spouse to Court to hold an enquiry. Unfortunately this process can take a number of months to finalize, which is why our office prefers to approach the High Court in terms of Rule 43 in suitable cases. 2. Can I ask my spouse to contribute to my costs? It seems more than just a little unfair that a party with a lot of money is able to “bully” a party with less money into a settlement of sorts, merely because the one party has more money than the other. In divorce matters our Courts recognize the principle that the parties should be in a position to litigate against each other on an equal footing. In practice this is very difficult to achieve. Your attorney may, and again in terms of Rule 43, approach the High Court with an Application that your spouse make a contribution towards your costs, to enable you to properly litigate against your spouse. The amount that you may be awarded will depend on all the circumstances of the case, and more specifically the complexity of the case. If your case is a very simple matter, for example where you have only been married for six months, you are married out of community of property with the exclusion of the accrual system, and there

are no children involved, then you are unlikely to obtain an order compelling your spouse to make a contribution towards your costs. There is after all probably very little to argue about in such a case. On the other hand where you are married in community of property, your spouse is a businessman with interests in a number of different businesses and refuses to disclose to you the exact nature of his business interests, then you may succeed with an application for a contribution towards the costs you have to incur in appointing an auditor, to properly investigate the nature and value of your spouse’s interests. 3. May I refuse my spouse access to the children if he does not pay maintenance? It is important to remember that maintenance and access to children are two entirely separate issues. A child has a right to know his / her parent. In terms of the new Children’s Act, our Courts are more inclined to grant joint parental rights and responsibilities in respect of children to both parties, than ever before. You may not deny your spouse access to the children solely because he / she has not paid maintenance in respect of the children. If there is an existing maintenance order, and your spouse has not complied with the order, then you may lodge a complaint against your spouse at your local Magistrate’s Court. Your spouse’s failure to comply with the maintenance order is a criminal offence and your spouse may be prosecuted accordingly. In the absence of any exceptional circumstances, the only real defence to such a prosecution is that your spouse did not have the means, through no fault of his own, to comply with the order. There are a number of different ways in which you can enforce a maintenance order and, where possible, a criminal prosecution should be your last resort. If you continue to refuse your spouse access to the children, you may find yourself as the Respondent in a High Court application, compelling you to grant access. Applications of this nature are costly and you may find yourself on the wrong end of a particularly unpleasant costs order. You may of course refuse to grant your spouse access to the children on other grounds. At our office, Aliscia Brits is assigned to attend to applications involving children. It’s a Girl Thing The It’s A Girl Thing (IAGT) women’s conference, is the 4th annual event of its kind which is attended by girls and women of all communities. This year’s event will take place from September 9 -10 at 3C’s Centurion Campus, in Irene, Gauteng, South Africa. Each year IAGT has seen an increased recognition and participation by women and girls from all South African communities, business communities, government communities, churches, institutions and delegates alike. The conference was originally developed to restore the purpose of God for women and girls and to restore the original role and influence of women and girls whilst building healthy families and communities according to God’s plan. God made every woman a woman of significance first within them and according to His purpose for their lives. The conference showcases each year’s programmes’ results, empower women, churches, government and businesses by sharing information. The conference has become a central event for women and girls and every year they plan ahead to ensure they attend the event. At the event, every year we invite world-renowned speakers who come and share their stories that touch our women and girls’ lives and change them radically. Adopt-a-Scholar Programme We established the Adopt-a-Scholar programme at our first annual It’s a Girl Thing conference in 2008. Adopt-a-Scholar appeals to the delegates every year to adopt a child and be a part of the programme. We responded to the local community challenges where children are orphaned and left without parents to care, support and guide them. Adopt-a-Scholar partners with schools to provide the scholars with education support, lunch meals, stationery, winter blankets, schools photos and Christmas presents. Every year hundreds of delegates adopt a child and get involved in building and restoring what has been lost in our communities. About 2000 children have been adopted through the programme to date, supported and guided. Women enlarge their territory and open up hearts to mother beyond their own children. We believe that churches and institutions have a big role to play in the healing of our nation and that is why we get involved and assist schools. We focus on the social aspect as they focus on their core responsibility – educating our nation. ANC stickers make a mess It is with utter disgust that I as an individual observe what is happening in this country. I am of the opinion that this beautiful country is going backwards and very fast too. Surely, if you grew up in a normal house where there is even a small degree of discipline according to human morals, one should strive to ensure that your environment is of such a nature that it is reasonably acceptable to all living in that community. It seems as if any individual that can make promises of improved circumstances can stand as a candidate and be elected, does not matter to parties whether the candidate is capable or possess any skills, knowledge or experience. My problem is with the mess made with posters during the recent municipal elections. The Lesedi municipality spends large amounts of money to make the street furniture look good. It should be remembered that these funds come from the ratepayers living within the boundaries of that municipality. I have noticed that a specific political party has pasted election posters to our beautifully painted mini sub power stations. The elections were on 18 May 2011. These posters are still on the substations. Why were these posters pasted there in the first place? There must be a by-law forbidding this. Does the politician responsible for the erection of the posters not know this? Is it acceptable to the ruling party? Is this the future of Heidelberg and the whole of South Africa for that matter? Why is it only one political party doing this? (I did not see any other political party doing the same). Who is going to pay for the rectifying this degrading mess? I suggest that your paper insist on proof that payment for the cleaning of this mess and possible repainting of the subs does not come from the funds raised from the ratepayers but from the relevant party. I will personally follow this matter and take personal action if I am not satisfied with the answers as published.

Hope for job seekers About 190 000 new jobs will be created by the Ekurhuleni Municipality in the next five years. This is the target set by Executive Mayor, Mondli Gungubele. The Mayor said, that the municipality has decided to weaken internal systems to enable this to happen. It has been decided to submit applications for all available job opportunities announced by both the provincial and national governments. Departments have been asked to come up with concrete proposals. Analysis shows that at least 28 000 full-time jobs could be created. An application has been made to the jobs fund for projects in excess of R2,3-billion . If this application is successful, it will add to the number of 147 000 part-time jobs to create.

Kids eat and learn Ocean Basket, Nigel’s super sea food restaurant, has embarked on a new mission to treat school learners at discounted prices and simultaneously teach them about fish and other edible sea food in a very special way. They even touch big salmons! One of the first schools that made use of the special offer was Nigel Secondary School of Alra Park, a combined primary and high school. With about 130 youngsters from Grade R and RR, the restaurant with its colourful balloons and attending staff, were soon turned into the hustle and bustle of eager learners who were intensely interested in

colouring in the drawings of sea fishes. They shouted in excitement, struggled to get hold of crayons and joked with each other while waiting for their food which was sponsored by the school. While Manager Wouter Burness had his hands full to cater for the whims of the children, Rani Naidoo and other teachers had to keep a watching eye on the busy guests. Wouter supplied some interesting facts about sea fish and other edible products from the sea. Cycling to help the aged It takes a lot of pedal power and stamina to cycle from Nigel to Durban, but 12 cyclists took off from the Nigel Home for the Aged. They came from Nigel, Heidelberg, Springs and other towns to participate in what has become an annual event. The 12 included two women (Charlotte Wheeler and Alida du Toit) and the youngest cyclist was 15-year-old Erich Goold. The others were Chris Engelbrecht, Dawie Lee, Leonard Naude, Johan Meyer, Francois Pretorius, Lance Smit, Stephan Weyers and Patrick Weyers. The cyclists were accompanied by medical personnel and drivers of vehicles to carry the spare bikes etc. Before they left the home residents gathered in the hall to wish them well on their journey and pray for their safety. Then came a big moment when the oldest resident of the home, Lenie Combrinck, cut the tape to send the

cyclists on their way. Lenie will be celebrating her 100th birthday 1 October. The cyclists travel over 620 km on their journey, stopping over at various places on the way. People sponsor them by the kilometer or just make a donation. Last year the event raised R82 000. This is definitely not a race and is done in stages. But it does come as a big challenge and fitness. From Nigel the cyclists went to Standerton for a stop-over and then the next day to Volksrust. Other stop-overs on the way included, Newcastle, Mooi Rivier and Pietermaritzburg. They reached Durban safely with a lot to celebrate. Their challenge completed the cyclists could then go home. This was a well organised event and a unique way of raising funds for the Nigel Old Age Home. The group had transport to return and came back on Sunday.

Passion for woodwork Dries en groot Liefde vir hartseer wit haaie! mammas

Whether you want a candle holder, sauce box or any article crafted in wood, then the person to do it is 93-year-old Piet Kruger. Piet, a resident of the Nigel Old Age Home, will turn 94 in November, but can’t think of not working on something. He has always been in construction work and has built many houses and flats. Piet came to Nigel in 1951 and then went to Rustenburg. He built a flat for the mine and then returned to Nigel. He was in the construction business with his son until his retirement. He was married in 1939 and his wife died in 1999. Piet decided two years ago that he would like to live at the Nigel Old Age Home and immediately started working with wood on a special bench in his room. “I’ve got plenty of time on my hands,” he laughs. “So doing woodwork keeps me out of mischief.” The items he has made so far are numerous and at present he is busy making a large paper holder. But in between making different items, Piet is often called upon to repair chairs and has even renovated a table at the home. At present he is busy making items which will be on sale at the home’s fête in October and there are bound to be a lot of customers. The wood he uses varies with each item and, when asked where he got his wood from, he replied, “If I see someone with wood they don’t want, I ask them for it”.

Dries se Tafelbergtog is moontlik gemaak deur Consol Glas en Auto City Group in Nigel. Hulle het albei bygedra tot ‘n fonds waarmee ‘n duur operasie van R432 000 hopelik deur ‘n breinchirurg op Dries uitgevoer sal kan word. ‘n Klein elektrode kan in die brein ingeplant word om sy huidige immobiliteit van 85% na 15% te verminder. ‘n Maatskappy wat duiktogte tussen wit haaie by Hermanus aanbied, het Dries intussen geskakel en hom en sy span mense, waar onder biokinetikus Tilde Victor van Heidelberg, genooi om sy wens gratis te kom uitvoer en verniet oor te bly. Dries sal met ‘n staalmandjie tussen die haaie afsak en die aanslag van die gevreesde monsters ervaar – soms stamp hulle die mandjie met groot geweld uit die pad. Die klimtog sou om 06:30 begin, maar die weer was so sleg dat dit vertraag is. Hy en lede van die klimspan van veertig het hande gevat en gebid. Toe het Dries met ‘n “jahoe!”soos ‘n vlakhaas weggespring en die berg getakel. Volgens Tilde is Dries die berg teen ‘n geweldig pas af, het oor klippe en rotse soos ‘n jong bok gespring en binne 35 minute uitgeput onder aangekom. In ‘n saal daar naby het Zille haar bewondering uitgespreek oor Dries se deursettingsvermoë om die invloed van Parkinsons Siekte onder die aandag van die wêreld te bring. Een van Dries se ander groot wense is om met ‘n straler deur die klankgrens te breek. Dries se vriende het ‘n spesiale fonds gestig om by te dra tot sy operasie.
