Lesedi laat staat dalk miljoene opdok ‘n Opspraakwekkende eis oor onteinde grond in die gebied van Lesedi, kan die staat dalk etlike miljoene Rand uit die sak jaag indien die eienaar van die onteinde grond daarin sou slaag om sy eis teen o.a. die Departement van Behuising, twee ander staatsdepartemente en Lesedi Plaaslike Munisipaliteit, te wen. Die stuk grond van 450 ha, aangrensend aan Ratanda, is geoormerk vir die ontwikkeling van die Obed Nkosi uitbreiding wat tussen Ratanda en die Blesbokspruit lê. Die grond is in 2008 onteien. Dorpstigting is goedgekeur en grondwerke vir die ontwikkeling is nou in die beginstadium. Rekord verneem volgens ‘n ingeligte bron dat die waarde van die grond waarskynlik heelwat hoër is as wat die eienaar verplig was om te aanvaar. Die moontlikheid word genoem dat dit selfs tot ses maal meer werd kan wees. Die onteieningsprys lê glo êrens tussen R6 milj. en R9 milj. By onteiening is ‘n eienaar verplig om die aangebode prys te aanvaar en kan hy hom tot die hof wend vir ‘n remedie (regstelling) as hy voel dat hy te min ontvang het. Dit sal dan vir hof wees om op grond van feite en regsargumente voor hom, te besluit of die onteieningsprys geregverdig was of nie. Die saak strek terug tot sowat vier jaar gelede. Op daardie tydstip het die vorige Munisipale Bestuurder, Piet van den Heever, glo met

onderhandelings begin. Omdat die grond in effek deur die Departement van Behuising bekom word, is hulle en ander staatsdepartemente verantwoordelik vir die aankoopprys. From the desk of Rev Ray Goddess It is so sad that many people seem to feel that God is invisible or not present. Some people even think that God punishes us and “takes people away” from us. The way that I see it is Rev Goddess, Heidelberg that we serve a LOVING Methodist Church God and He will never hurt us. Yes, He does know what is going to happen to us and He also knows when we are going to die on earth but I believe that He hurts just as much as we do when we hurt. Remember that it is His plan that we live to 120 years – we see this in Genesis 6:3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years.”(NIV). We are, after all, His children and He created us. I do not take away the fact that God can and does bring good out of all situations (good and bad) – that is if we allow Him to work in our lives. Just take some time to think of your week and you will see that God is present in your life, caring for you all the time. The problem is that we often want Him to care for us in OUR way and not in His way. The result of this is that we are often disappointed in God but we should actually be disappointed in ourselves not God. We seem to act as God and set the standard and needs without consulting God in prayer. As an example of how God’s hand is on us even when we think He is far away I would like to use the example of the accident that occurred in Marais Street on Monday afternoon. It was a horrific accident with, in my opinion, two cars pretty nearly written off. The accident happened when a number of young children were moving around getting into and out of cars, moving on the pavement, crossing the road and waiting for parents. Yet with all of this happening NOT ONE CHILD WAS INJURED and miraculously there were no serious injuries to any of the adults involved (none were admitted to hospital – just treated and discharged). If a person takes some time to think of how catastrophic this accident could have been we can see how the people were blessed and protected by God. Material loss is never nice but material things can always be replaced – not a life. Some people may wonder if those involved were cursed or had made God cross in some way or another. Well I do not believe that this was the case at all. While we have to constantly be aware of how Satan tempts us and tries to discourage us from doing work for God we can also be assured that we as Christ Followers are working form a platform of victory in Jesus Christ and so we can know that we WILL overcome all of the setbacks in our lives as Jesus is on our side. I have often said (and still maintain this) that the more we do for God the bigger a threat we are for Satan and so the more we are going to be attacked by Satan. I would like to challenge us all to take some time and note down all the places and times when God has blessed us in the last few weeks – you will ALWAYS see that His hand is with you and the blessings heavily outweigh the problems we have in life. Stay strong in Jesus – He loves you.

Wolkbreuk tref Nigel
Die Vioolspinnekop is ‘n giftige kalant wat maklik met die minder skadelose huisspinnekop, “Daddy Long Legs” verwar kan word. Daar is drie soorte, maar in Suid-Afrika is daar veral een, die sg. Bruin Kluisenaar (Brown Recluse) wat in ons omgewing voorkom. Foto’s van die toksiese werking van die Bruin Kluisenaar se byt toon dat die vesels in die liggaam weggevreet word en dat ‘n pasiënt binne tien dae alle vleis tot op
In ‘n reënstorm oor Nigel wat met ‘n wolkbreuk te paard gegaan het, is meer as 110 mm reën op 23 Januarie en in die vroeë oggendure van 24 Januarie uitgegiet. Die wolkbreuk het die dorp omstreeks 16:00 getref, strate is op plekke in jong riviere omskep, verkeersligte was buite werking, grasperke was onder water en krag na besighede en huise was ‘n uur lank buite werking. Die dorp was in chaos gedompel en sommige besighede het vroeër as gewoonlik gesluit omdat dit pik donker binne was. Verkeer is ontwrig deur verkeersligte wat buite

Die Nigel geneesheer se raad is dat mense wat skielik bytmerke aan hul liggame bemerk, so gou as moontlik by ‘n dokter moet uitkom. ‘n Mens moet liewer voorkomend optree as om te lank te wag. Die Vioolspinnekop trek blykbaar a.g.v. die baie reën en warm klimaat in huise in waar dit met “Daddy Long Legs” verwar kan word.

No chemicals – no swimming Over the holiday season until recently people have gone to the Nigel public swimming pool only to find it closed and the water a deep green. One woman was told by a man at the pool that there were no funds to keep the pool going. Many children walk a long way on hot days only to find the gates closed and walk back home. Some children walked to the Blesbokspruit to cool down. The Rekord made calls to the relevant departments in Nigel

However the situation has been sorted out and the pool should be open shortly. Why “murderers” & “rapists” should get bail by JP Okes Some of the most controversial sections of the Criminal Procedure Act, are those dealing with the question of bail. All too often we hear about communities being most upset about bail having been granted to “Murderers” and “Rapists”. To properly answer the question, I shall first briefly discuss the purpose and role of bail. First and foremost it must be remembered that in any civilized society there is a presumption of innocence. This means that any person is presumed innocent until a Court has found that person guilty. An accused person has a right to a fair trial, which includes the right to challenge evidence presented against him. It is not important that people be convicted of offences. What is important is that when people are convicted of offences, that those persons are actually guilty. The old saying goes that civilized society would rather have ten guilty people walk free, than have one innocent person go to jail. Unfortunately the finalization of cases in our country, particularly in respect of serious offences

such as murder and rape, can take months and even years to finalize. The purpose of bail is to regulate the position of the accused until such time as the trial is finalized. Far too often accused persons are kept in custody for months, only to be later acquitted by the relevant Court. The State does not compensate an accused person who is found not guilty after spending months in custody. One can only imagine the suffering of the accused person under these circumstances. He has probably lost his employment. His relationships with his loved ones would have been placed under severe pressure. He would have suffered physically and mentally. All of this would have happened notwithstanding the presumption of his innocence. When an application is made for bail, the Court hearing the application has an opportunity to strike a balance between the interests of the complainant, the accused and the community. The community obviously also suffers where innocent people are unnecessarily imprisoned. If a suitable amount of bail, coupled with suitable conditions, is fixed for an accused person, then the risks of imprisoning an innocent person, and the prejudice that is suffered as a result, can be avoided. During a bail application a Court primarily asks itself three questions: 1) If released on bail, will the accused return to Court? In other words, is the accused a flight risk? 2) Does the accused pose any danger to the witnesses and / or members of the community?
Because not everything in law is Black & White......
3) Will the accused interfere with the investigation of the matter? If the answer to all three questions is no, then it makes sense that the accused person should be released on bail. In determining the answers to these questions, the Court considers a number of factors, not least of which are whether or not the accused has previous convictions, whether or not the accused has any outstanding cases, whether or not the accused has a fixed address, whether or not the accused is employed, whether or not the accused has commitments towards family members that he must support, and also the nature of the charges against the accused. Where there is a likelihood that the accused, if convicted, would most probably be sentenced to a lengthy period of imprisonment, a Court may be less inclined to grant bail. The reason for this is simply that a person facing a lengthy period of imprisonment is more likely to flee, than a person who is at the most facing a fine or a suspended sentence. In serious matters such as murder and rape, the Court will often take the strength of the State’s case into account in deciding the question of bail. Logically where there, at the time of the bail application, appears to be a weak case against the accused, then the Court will be more inclined to grant bail. Remember however that a bail application is not a trial. The Court does not during the bail application decide whether or not the accused is guilty. The Court must in fact, based on the presumption of innocence, proceed with the bail application as if the
accused is in fact innocent. When people object to “murderers” and “rapists” getting bail, they are forgetting that those persons cannot yet be described as “murderers” and “rapists” as they have not yet been convicted on charges of murder and rape. They are therefore, until they are convicted, innocent. Remember that a competent Court is responsible for determining the guilt or innocence of an accused person, and not the community. So next time you hear somebody complaining about a “murderer” or “rapist” being granted bail, ask that person whether or not the accused has in fact been convicted. If not, ask that person whether he really believes that innocent persons should be kept in jail? In closing let me point out that it is unwise for an accused person to bring his bail application without the assistance of a suitably qualified attorney. In Court I often hear accused persons saying that they do not need an attorney because they are innocent. From my perspective innocent persons are far more in need of attorneys than guilty persons. Nobody really believes that prisons are filled only with guilty people. Our system is not perfect, which unfortunately means that many innocent people are imprisoned for years before they are released. You have a constitutional right to an attorney. Make use of it. As he was not yet 19 Fred had to sign up as part of the police orchestra. When war broke out in 1939 he signed up as part of the Second South African Police Battalion. Focus on Cyclists will “ride for sight” female fire fighters In an attempt to ensure a safe and secure environment, Ekurhuleni is continuously improving the quality of the fire fighting capacity. More women are becoming part of this very important profession. Already 21 female fire fighters are undergoing training, with the aim on developing them into officers. The aim is to bridge the gap between the advancement of female fire fighters to senior positions within emergency services. The programme began in October last year and in March the personnel will write the intermediate certificate examination. Those who pass will progress to study for a Graduate Diploma qualification which is internationally recognized. By March 2013 the successful students will write a final examination for the Graduate Diploma. The course is focused on fire operations, fire engineering science, safety management and administration. This initiative is expected to boost the number of female fire fighters that’s currently studying towards a B Tech degree in fire technology. Fire and rescue service was previously seen as a male dominated industry. But Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Service want to develop professionals who will grant communities the best possible care in times of need.
The annual Ride for Sight event will take place on February 12 and is in aid of cycling to restore the gift of sight. The Nigel Route 42 Cycling Club has been invited and the organisers expect a lot from this area to join in the ride. Other cyclists in the Nigel and Heidelberg areas are welcome to participate. All proceeds will go to Retina South Africa. There will be a 116km super class, a 62km challenge and it all starts at the Boksburg City Stadium in Jubilee Road. The 62km event is for 0-16 boys and girls with hampers to be won for the first three places in each category. The 116km starts from 06:15 and the 62km from 08:00. A large portion of the entry fee goes towards research projects to bring treatments for Retinal blindness to South Africa. All additional donations will fund genetic tests for under-privileged children to ensure their inclusion in future therapies. The 116km event will get the winner the Ernest Hunt trophy and R82 000 will be allocated across all main categories. The closing date for entries is officially January 31, but this date has now been extended to later. The entry for the 116km is R190 and R110 for the 62km. There will be a donation draw with a prize. There are general rules and conditions one important one being - no helmet no ride! Last year the race became an official Ekurhuleni event as the City of Ekurhuleni became a hosting partner to ensure the event continues to live up to its billing as one of the premier cycling events on the Gauteng calendar. The prize for the top man and woman in the ride will be R12 000 each and cash prizes will be awarded to the first 12 cyclists. Winners of other categories will also be awarded prizes including, holiday vouchers and other prizes. So it is now up to our local cyclists to get ready for this ride which will also help people from going blind. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them (John 17:26). The prayer of the Lord Jesus in our opening verse above is so inspiring; often times when I read it, it brings tears to my eyes. Jesus asked that our heavenly Father’s love may be in us. We know God heard His prayer because in Romans 5:5, Paul tells us that the same love Jesus prayed about has now been shed in abundance in our hearts by the Holy Ghost: “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” You don’t need to try to attain to God’s level of love, for His love is already in you, and it ought to drive you into action for the Kingdom, the same way it inspired God to give His very best for the salvation of the whole world: “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). This should be your focus, as you outline and prepare to execute your plans for the year;
living out the Father’s love. The Father’s love in you should compel you to give your all to the Lord, and dedicate yourself to serving and helping others; especially God’s people. The highest revelation of Christianity is Christ in you, living out His love in you. That’s because love is the highest and topmost quality of God’s character, so much so, that the Bible says, “...God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him” (1 John 4:16). Let your life be an outshining of God’s great love—His unconditional and selfgiving love! Prayer Dear Father, thank you for enlightening my spirit to comprehend the truth and power of Your love! Your love is shed abroad in my heart by the Holy Spirit, and it drives me today to reach out with the message of salvation to the lost and hurting in my world. I thank you for the manifestation of your power and the miracles that ensue as I live out your love in me, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

A huge hole full of water is on a farm in Nigel, with a massive pile of earth and sewerage taken out of it. The farm is in the Noycedale area. Resident Angelique Jeffery noticed the water seeping through the grass over a week ago. Since then the manhole has overflowed and the sewerage and water gushed out over a wide area. The dirt road alongside the farm is also wet. This is believed to be an ERWAT problem, but Nigel Customer Care Centre was sympathetic to the problem and last week workers were on the site. Angelique and other residents are concerned that the underground problem may lead to sewerage flowing into the nearby Blesbokspruit. Now there is some action being taken but people in the area are hoping that the situation will shortly be solved permanently.
Vandalism! These two meters are in central Dunnottar and the cover of the one on the right has been stolen. Fortunately someone put bricks on top of the meter, to avoid people injuring themselves. If anyone sees these meter covers being taken, please report it to the police. 016 341 5800

SA Studies in Amerika
Universiteitsloopbane in Amerika vir SuidAfrikaanse studente wat in die lig van die deurmekaarspul met inskrywings aan SA Universiteite en die toepassing van die kwotastelsel, nie verder kan studeer nie, wink vir SA studente wat bereid is om hard te gaan werk om die akademiese wêreld oop te breek. Karien Bennett, ‘n voormalige Suid-Afrikaner wat 24 jaar gelede na Amerika verhuis het, hou die oplossing vir die student en hul moedelose ouers. Sy reël nie-terugbetaalbare beurstoekennings vir studente wat pas skool verlaat het of wat reeds wysheid langs die pad opgetel het as Suid-Afrikaanse gegradueerdes. Karien wat in San Diego, Kalifornië bly, het kontak met meer as 10 000 universiteite in die VSA waarvan tussen 200 en 500 as van die bestes ter wêreld gereken word. Sy het ‘n ondersteuningsbasis van groot skenkers wat jaarliks miljoene dollars vir studies beskikbaar stel. Karien sê sy het al ‘n stuk of ses honderd voor- en nagraadse Suid-Afrikaners gehelp om daar te studeer met nie-terugbetaalbare
beurse. Behalwe gratis studies, werk die studente op die kampusse en verdien voorgraads vanaf $500 en meer en nagraadse studente van $1 000 en meer per maand om hul blyplek en kos te kan betaal. Karien het IPSA gestig, of dan die International Placement Services of America. Sy stap elke tree saam met ‘n student van sy aansoekstadium tot aan die einde van sy studies (as hy of sy wil). Andre Deetlefs van Heidelberg (B. Com Statistiek en B.Sc Geografie) vertrek in Julie met Karien se hulp vir ‘n tweede keer na Amerika. Daar wil hy die hoogste sport gaan bereik en streef na ‘n professoraat om hoof van ‘n fakulteit te word. Hoewel hy Karien nog nie persoonlik ontmoet het nie, beskryf hy haar as uiters dinamies en ‘n bemarker wie se gelyke nie maklik gevind word nie. “Dit sit nie in enige persoon se broek om “scholarships” te bekom nie.
