Nigel resident & team scooped awards Nigel resident, Lesmarie Bentley-Steyn, and her team from the University of Johannesburg have scooped several international awards for their 2012/3 advertising campaign. Lesmarie is married to Reverend Conrad Steyn of the Dutch Reformed Church in Nigel (NG Moedergemeente). The International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), one of the world’s largest communication associations, has awarded the University’s ‘Be CLEAR about your future’ campaign an international Gold Quill Excellence Award as well as the Africa Gold Quill award for its 2012/3 advertising campaign. “Winning a Gold Quill Award puts you in the top ranks of the world’s business communicators. You deserve to give yourself and your team or colleagues a pat on the back,” said Tim Buckley, IABC 2013 Gold Quill Awards chair. Furthermore, UJ’s ‘Be CLEAR about your future’ campaign also received a Bronze award in the 2013 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence Awards, which recognises excellence among higher education institutions. This is the third year that the University of Johannesburg has been acknowledged by CASE. In 2011 , UJ received a Gold award, and in 2012 a Silver and a Bronze award for its advertising campaigns. Judges for the CASE award said: “Incredibly ambitious campaign with a lot of heart and soul poured into the overall execution and planning.’ The ‘Be CLEAR about your future’ campaign is part of the brand development campaign that continues to build on the stature of the University while simultaneously speaking to the youth. The evolution of the brand development campaign focuses on present-
ing UJ as accessible yet providing excellence in teaching and learning, research and student experience. This award-winning campaign aimed to address a national problem: the lack of understanding among potential students about the process required to become a university student. It therefore addressed the dire need for early student career counselling. UJ migrated from the 2011 “Be Anything You Want to Be” campaign to 2012’s “Be CLEAR about your future – Be Anything You Want To Be”. “CLEAR” is an acronym for: Choose your subjects wisely in grade 9; Learn well in grade 10; Earn the good marks you need in grade 11; Apply early with those marks in grade 12; and Register for your first year at UJ if you are accepted. Judges of the Gold Quill award commented as follows: “This was really outstanding work. You adhered to many communications best practices – you identified and understood your audiences, you identified broader community communications needs as well as your university’s desire to ensure the safety and education of those audiences, you set up SMART goals and objectives, and you provided a nice selec-
tion of work samples. Congratulations!” “The University is thrilled to have made its mark in the international marketing and communication arena. How will you be remembered As I write this article I am very aware of a great man who is struggling with his health. Nelson Mandela is a man to be admired, a man who has changed the lives of many and who will be remembered in the history books forever. Madiba is a humble man and pleasant to speak to (I have had this great honour). A man who has tried to make “right” with all he comes into conversation with. I guess the question that we all need to answer is “what will we be remembered

just look for the good in the person you are struggling with and you will be pleasantly surprised). What are you going to be remembered for? I would like to extend this question further and say whose life are you aspiring towards? Are you looking at your hero on TV or your hero on the sports field? Are you possibly looking at the hero in the workplace who treats everybody like dirt but is climbing the corporate ladder? May I suggest that one person who would be a great inspiration to all is Jesus Christ? He was humble, wise, loving, caring, compassionate and obedient to the law. Jesus was also humble, a servant, not greedy and always wanting to help others. Jesus lived over 2000 years ago and yet we still remember

When we wonder why they are remembered today it is because they followed Jesus’ example closely and were known to be humble people seeking to help and do good in the name of Jesus Christ. The choice is yours but may I plead that you make right with all and be remembered for the Jesus that people see in you.

Bribery backfires Hundreds of learner drivers fear that they will not obtain a license unless they are prepared to pay the instructors illegal fees. Bribery is becoming such a shameless thing. A spokesperson said an instructor assured that he/she could obtain a learner’s license with a guaranteed pass if R3500 is paid. This story not only highlighted how desperate people are to get driver’s licenses, but indicates that money talks. Recently an incident occurred when an african man suggested that a drivers license can be organised without any hazzles provided that money is paid to him. After he has received your payment he sneaks out not to be seen again. This corruptive method took place at three different locations. The public should be alert.

Look out! The flow of electricity through the human body can kill – less than one ampere of electricity can burn, severely injure or cause death. Be aware of potential shock hazards associated with electrical distribution equipment – follow safety signs, keep away from electrical transmission. On Tuesday June 25 an open power supply box was found at Dunnottar in Porter Road. Residents still awaits reaction from the municipality. Readers are warned to avoid open power supply boxes as it can be very dangerous and even fatal. Power supplies have large capacitors in them. These capacitors store electricity in them even when mains power is shut off. If you were to touch the connections on the bottom of the capacitors, you could receive a potentially lethal shock. 100 Years of motoring
Large numbers of stamps were issued to commemorate the 100 years of motoring in stamp history. Charles Rogers from the Nigel Stamp Club had an interesting lecture about stamps from horseless carriages to the computerised saloons. The horseless idea started with Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz. Therefore the Daimler-Benz patent in 1961 was born as they combined it together. No one experienced the sensation of driving a car in 1886. Stamps from Monaco showing a variety of aspects in development of cars. Some of these cars had been going for centuries from fun cars, touring cars and racing cars. Famous name in racing is the Bugatti sports vehicle. During the meeting they also had a look at the famous Albert Schweitzer collection, who was born in 1875 in France. What an excellent way to motivate drivers, by standing a chance to win a car? In order to win a car four components are required to make a good driver. The amount of income he delivers, his diesel consumption, the revenue per kilometer and the total kilometers he covers. After evaluating every driver’s performance for the first 6 months of this year, a ceremony was held on Thursday July 11 to announce the winners, and hand their awards.
