Community Spotlight

For the last 20 plus years, Walter Burnett Jr. has been serving the residents and businesses of the 27th Ward. As one of the longest serving African American Aldermen in Chicago’s City Council, he has been a Champion for Change in his community.

His ability to bring all constituents to the table including, residents, developers, businesses and community organizations has proven profitable. His ward currently has one of the city’s biggest development boom in history and he is making sure that his residents benefit and not just developers.

Communities Empowered Through Construction was born in the 27th ward, primarily to help facilitate a FAIR hiring process for residents and provide resources for general contractors and developers to honor

their hiring commitments. Alderman Burnett has been instrumental in the success of so many resident and as a result, the success of CEC.

For our first Community Spotlight, we would like to highlight Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr.

Hobbies: “I enjoy boxing and was once the 1987 Golden Glove Boxing Champion.”

Little Known Facts: “I have a huge sweet tooth and I love animals. I currently have 3 cats and 2 dogs. Two of my cats were rescue cats that were trained to live outdoors and you can often find me walking both my dogs, Sheba and Buddy.
