BIM Modeling of Hilti’s Ventilated Facade

Hilti had the goal to optimize the workflow about Ventilated Facade orders, a R&D task. In order to manage such orders, two distincts parametric objects were created thanks to BIM Authoring software Revit; moreover, their potential and flexibility were evaluated using pratical applications. After evaluation it has been decided to develop the parametric object based on nested components and characterized by high levels of parametrization (LookUp Table, Type Catalog).

Borgo San Marco Pisa Project has been marked by an architectural identity research, able to highlight the building over a conventional existing context and to clearly define a new urban space. In the southern part of the city, an area strongly characterized by central railway station and internation airport Galileo Galilei, San Marco neighborhood is a consolidated and vital context, where the new building and his park are going to match, adding living quality for present and future residents. The object is made up of 31 apartments of different sizes, from two-room apartmen to penthouse, distributed on 4 floors above ground; penthouse are duplex type, with terraces orientated and combined in order to grant privacy is guaranteed. Apartments have an A+ ClimateHouse energy efficiency certification, thanks to natural materials (like breathable and heat-insulation terracotta case ) and solar energy technologies. Indaco and Magenta: colour’s plaster facade merges with wooden laths covering building plastic masses, acting just like a sort of volume game where loggias and terraces come out to enjoy views on the city and the park.

Old barn San Miniato (Pisa) The project idea comes from a contemporary reinterpretation of barn and farmhouse. The multiplie purpose consists in restoring identity, regaining historic background and binding the new building to the surrounding landscape, by adding simple and clear flat roof volumes. This way new portions of villa are clearly emphasized, although they merge armoniously with existing buildings and the site area, that is strongly marked by slopes and height variations exalted by new vegetation and green walks. Barn at full height is located nearby cultivated fields in order to merge it with surrounding environment; the new volume comes out from ground with only one floor, wrapped by a curtain wall; this relation creates litlle courtyards as a result of spatial additions/subtractions. Construction features and material language are peculiar of Tuscan rural architecture ones: brickwork walls, wooden beams, imbrex and tegula; curtain wall is realized in terracotta plank natural colour, pierced by rectangular holes, recalling a vibrant surface. Same architectural and material language is used for outdoor paving, creating a continuum between building courtyard and outdoor space.

Corso Monforte, 40 Milan The major refurbishment consists of joining two apartments into one, implying to a spatial redeployment. The layout aims to create two main areas: - living/dining room linked with the kitchen by the main hallway; - master bedroom + walk-in closet directly connected to the master bathroom. The main entrance leads directly to the living room, a fluid space divided by two double hinged doors. The double hinged door is the leitmotiv of the new apartment. Permeable wall shapes become a luminous transition diaphragms, allowing sunlight to gently penetrate in all the apartment’s volumes.

Rome The project is located within the former Scalo San Lorenzo site, characterized by the presence of the industrial archeology of the railway and the infrastructure of the freeway. An existing building at the entrance of the site is maintained, but with a new function, while the large central part of the site becomes the location for a new building, replacing the previous one. The new architecture consists of 7 floors above ground and an underground level. From an architectural point of view, it is developed by two bodies that come together in an acute angle towards the back of the site. The footprint of the volume is generated by an offset of the site boundaries, thus assuring accessibility to the building on all sides. The shape of the building is characterized by the horizontal lines of the slabs, emphasized also by the set back of both the vertical structure and the faรงade. The void between the new building and the existing one becomes a new urban plaza and the central point of the project, the heart and soul of the masterplan, as well as a new green space that acts as welcoming area.

Hotel Grand Carlo Prague This refurbishment proposal refers to the main hall, the SPA and a hotel room; the challenge is to deal with load-bearing wall structure, which obviously defines the actual space arrangement. The project aims to create a spatial continuum, replacing walls with light and permeable diaphragms wherever possible, in order to increase the effect of a unique space.

Bologna The project was born in the hearth of the old Bolognina district. The area was founded in 1880 as a working-class neighborhood, in the period when factories were moving from the old town centre to this place, where they could easily receive and send goods using the local railway station. The new dwellings for workers were built here and the new settlement for the first working class community was established. This new TSH Bologna development is located a few steps away from the infrastructural hub of the new high speed train station of Bologna, connecting Bologna to Milan and Florence in only 1 hour. The new building is facing the Bologna City Council, and becomes a key player for a innovative concept of hotel accommodation: the new structure is an expression of young, cultural, dynamic, accessible, sustainable architecture for students, professionals and tourists. Regeneration and transformation, as some of today’s urban development issues, merged with The Student Hotel program and identity: a left-over unused building becomes a state of the art for sustainability, cutting edge design and flexible architectural expression. The over-all volumes and the structure are preserved; the new transparent, sustainable and private facade comes along with an attractive space planning, designed in order to shape a brand new organization of the building with lobby, bar restaurant, co-working, gym and a pool, all designed as an unique experience on the ground floor, which becomes a new attraction, a 24 hours accessible plaza. Green roof terraces, with a bar lounge, seating and canopies accommodations, are designed to create an unique and functional space for the hotel residents with long views over the Bologna skyline.

Milan The offices of San Fedele Foundation, overlooking the homonymous square located behind Palazzo Marino and Piazza della Scala, host the new Italian headquarters of a major financial firm, ALTIUM CAPITAL. The interiors are planned as a mixture between prestige of the historical mansion and functional modern spaces suited to fit nowadays business needs, overlooking future necessities. The layout of the offices is a large open plan characterized by technical volumes that define the space. The layout gives the possibility, if necessary, of closing or opening the rooms to have either separate spaces or a unitary common space that opens up overlooking the plaza. Oak, glass walls, steel and white finishing define the mood board of the spaces.

Shopping mall and offices building Pontedera (PI) Project path is made up of three phases: analysis of site own-planning compliance, architectural survey of current-state building area, and finally a regeneration plan proposal in accordance with site urban needs. Project aim is to create a commercial and service building and outbuilding underground and ground level private parking, to link main street to major parking zone nearby Pontedera hospital and railway station; this new street boosts commercial capabilities of the area. The building shape enhances the new junction as a new volume side by side to the existing one, but different in height. The volumes of the flooors are staggered and create a nice alternation between light and shadow, full and empty spaces; this last feature is represented in planimetry thanks to an inner courtyard inside the volume of the three upper floors. Facade is articulated by windows and lodges, external coating realised with terracotta laths and tiles. The building structures are formed by a grid pillar placed to obtain various floor variations , upper inner courtyard and free indoor layout.

Rinaldo Piaggio Avenue Pontedera (Pisa) 1st prize with EMBT - M i ralles Tagliabue Regeneration of Viale Rinaldo Piaggio comes along with two further urban redevelopment themes proposed by City Council’s international competition: - masterplan of nearby Villaggio Piaggio (Piaggio Mill Town); - multistorey car park on “Ex Ape” hangar’s site. Aim of City Council is to create an Innovation Park, where volumes of old Piaggio Industries hangars will be transformed into new Pisa University and Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies research labs, added to existing ones. Piaggio Industries are a local excellence and city industrial heart. Main entrances lie in the Viale; the Piaggio museum is located inside old hangars along the main road, ensuring a Piaggio (and mostly Vespa) sightseeing experience to tourists. Lots of different kind of buildings are located along the Viale: railway station, schools, research and cultural centers, commercial activities; by now they are not well connected. For this reason Viale (running parallel to railway from East to West) is often congested due to intense traffic and because of cars parking improperly on the sides. For all this reasons City Council wants to build a multistorey car park . Project layout is developed from the study of Piaggio’s mechanical production shapes; those shapes define all the project: plan, elevation, 3D and functions; street furniture is realised by bended tubulars in the shapes of pergolas, street lamps, seats, bike racks, dustbins and flowerbeds, all disposed along the Viale. Thanks to new urban road network redesign, the Viale will gain power and will become a sort of large equipped plate where all traffic flows can coexist, polarities will be linked and be fully accessible by residents, everything marked by a fluid and symbolic architecture; pavement is similarly defined by same shapes of street furniture, while road surface is made up by photocatalytic materials, which lower CO2 emission level.

House in Milano Sesto Sesto San Giovanni (Milan) Milanosesto is a vast and deep redevelopment operation of a former industrial area one of the most important in Europe. The project extends over an area of 140 hectares that will give birth to a new city designed according to the highest standards of energy efficiency. It will be at the centre of green oasis of approximately 65 hectares (161 acres), characterized by the presence of various typologies of buildings (public, private and mixed) with different uses (residential, offices, retail, hotel, industrial and recreational) for a comprehensive total of approximately one million square meters; the area will also include an hospital and service structures, as well as research facilities, all combined to make up the future City of Health and Research. The green spaces and the harmonic combination among the buildings will be the cornerstones of the master plan; the park and the green spaces will become the common elements, the binding glue among the various parts of this budding urban space. The building subject matter of the competition will be shaped in order to get a direct view on the focal elements of the masterplan: plazas and pedestrian promenade. The space surrounded by the buildings will become a square thanks to the shops located on the ground floor. Concrete slabs will grant maximum flexibility about distributions of accomodation models (possibly prefabricated). They will completely fulfilled Social Housing Brief’s Requests, and permit to obtain a Floor Efficiency Ratio equal to an 80% of Gross Floor Area. The building uncommon structure will allow cross ventilation for all the apartments, emphasizing natural ventilation and boosting the perceived comfort. Moreover sunlight will be able capable of reaching three sides of every housing modules; on the other hand sun-shading will be ensured by the overhangs of each floor and brise soleil.

Piazza Castello Milan Site Area: 25k square meters Park area: 12,5k square meters City Council’s pedestrianization of Piazza Castello becomes an opportunity to redesign the urban void of Castello Sforzesco, from Parco Sempione up to residential urban areas developed during XIX century. The plan aims to widen Parco Sempione (250 trees planting) to residential emicycle, finally realising Alemagna’s original layout; existing walkways are integrated and the upper part of Via Dante is enlarged in order to create an open air pavemented foyer. In addition pedestrian traffic over San Babila - Arco della Pace axis is upgraded. The new plaza designed on the axis that connects the castle, Largo Beltrami e Largo Cairoli in an armonious way, becomes a place where culture and environment meet inside the city, attracting both the middle aged and the youth. This is why a temporary reflecting petal steel structure shapes the space as an ancient amphitheatre round the fountain.
