SPENDING TIME WITH JESUS THIS

CHRISTMAS

DR. JOHN NEUFELD is the Canadian Bible Teacher of Back to the Bible Canada, and is well known both nationally and internationally for his excellence in expositional Bible teaching. Dr. Neufeld is passionate about bringing the truth of God’s Word to life across Canada and beyond.

Very often, the way Christians celebrate Christmas is like what happens when you go visit a couple that has just had a baby. Everyone comes over for the celebration. At one point, they all tiptoe into the bedroom, and Mom pulls the little blanket back. Everyone says the 4 | DECEMBER 2017 + JANUARY 2018

appropriate things like, “he’s so cute,” and then we go out, shut the door and pray earnestly that the baby will stay asleep so we can have coffee and cookies and enjoy one another and then go home. But we never visit the baby. That’s

because newborn babies don’t visit well. They cry, suckle, eat, throw up and soil their diapers. And then, thankfully, they go back to sleep. Christmas often feels like that. We think about the shepherds and wise men. We recount Herod’s rage against the Child and the sudden journey to Egypt as refugees. We recount the ancient prophecies from the Old Testament. But we say very little about the Child outside of the barn and the manger. The Bible really does speak about baby Jesus in a way that if we had gone to visit Him, we would have spent all of our time with Him. This is what makes Christmas so fascinating. It wouldn’t matter if you were Anna or Elizabeth, the Magi or the rugged blue-collar shepherds - the Baby Himself would have been all you wanted to see. I want you to imagine that John, Matthew and Luke went to visit baby Jesus as He lay in the manger. I know that didn’t happen, and couldn’t have happened. But for the sake of understanding why this Baby completely dominates our thinking, imagine that these three Gospel writers would have shown up with Joseph and Mary – and how their full attention would have been directed to the baby.

eyes are transfixed by what he sees. And then as he stares at the Baby, he says, “I see in this Child the ever existent One. As I hold this Baby and stare at the little hands and feet, I see that in this One is life. Unlike my life, which has its explanation in my parents, grandparents and ultimately in God, this One is life in and of Itself. This is the very essence of life. His life is dependent on no other factors, rather all other life is dependent on Him.” Matthew then takes the Baby from John’s hands, and he too is lost in the grandeur of the moment. Finally he says, “This Child is the legitimate Ruler of the human race. This is humanity’s rightful Ruler. No other man can claim this title, but this One can. In a world filled with kings, presidents, prime minsters and despots, this One trumps them all, and His kingdom will never end.” By this time, Luke is impatient. He too wants his turn with the Child. He says, “This Child is the light of revelation to the Gentiles, whose life will determine the destiny of every human being.” Well, the three could go on and on. But so should we. This Christmas, spend some time in wonder, as you spend time with the Babe in the manger.

What would they have said? Imagine John stepping forward first and taking the Baby in his arms. His BACKTOTHEBIBLE.CA | 5

Behind the

CAROLS

PHIL CALLAWAY is an author and host of Laugh Again. He has five grandchildren. They wear name tags.

I love Christmas music. My wife asks me to put it away, though. In August. One of my favourites was written in July of 1945 when musician Mel Torme dropped in on his friend Robert Wells who was writing songs for a couple of movies. Wells had written down, “Chestnuts roasting... Jack Frost nipping... Yuletide carols... Folks dressed up like Eskimos.” Torme thought it was a great idea for a Christmas song, and he was right. I always imagined those words being 8 | DECEMBER 2017 + JANUARY 2018

written near the North Pole while the author sipped hot cocoa by the fire. But the song that my mother scolded me for calling “Chipmunks Roasting on an Open Fire,” was really “The Christmas Song.” It was penned during a blistering California heat wave. A century earlier, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow married Fanny Appleton. They had five children. In 1861, months after the opening shots of

the American Civil War were fired, Fanny’s dress caught fire while she cut her daughter’s hair. Her husband tried to extinguish the flames, first with a rug and then his own body. It was too late. Fanny died the next morning. Henry’s burns were so severe that he couldn’t attend his own wife’s funeral. He would grow a beard to hide his disfigured face and at times feared that he would be sent to an asylum because of his grief. During his first Christmas without Fanny, Longfellow wrote, “How inexpressibly sad are all holidays.” And later, “Perhaps someday God will give me peace.” The next Christmas he wrote, “‘A merry Christmas’ say the children, but that is no more for me.” As the Civil War divided the country, Longfellow’s son Charles joined the army against his father’s wishes and was critically wounded. Christmas of 1863 is silent in Longfellow’s journal. But the following Christmas day, three years after his wife’s death, Longfellow listened as church bells announced the arrival of another painful Christmas. He sat down and

wrote, “I heard the bells on Christmas day, their old familiar carols play, and wild and sweet the words repeat of peace on earth, good will to men!” But the song that began so pleasantly took a dark turn. “And in despair I bowed my head; ‘there is no peace on earth,’ I said; ‘for hate is strong, and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men!” Then somehow from that dark Christmas came the irrepressible triumph of hope: “Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: ‘God is not dead, nor doth He sleep! The wrong shall fail, the Right prevail, with peace on earth, good will to men!” Longfellow’s heartache continued. The Civil War raged on. Yet then, as today, Christmas came, and with it the reminder that amid hate and heartache, hope shines. The times have been dark before. And into that darkness came the light of the world. A Saviour. A Redeemer. Christ the Lord. One who will make all things new. May the peace of Christ be with you and yours this Christmas!

HOPE, SUFFERING + ABUNDANT LIFE

A N I N T E RV I E W WITH MARK AND CORI WENSLEY We recently sat down with Mark and Cori – two dedicated listeners and supporters of our ministries. It’s always encouraging to hear how Back to the Bible Canada, Laugh Again, and indoubt have resulted in godly change in people’s lives. Consider Mark’s response when asked how our ministries had impacted them as a couple:

knew it, but it's like someone was taking a magnifying glass and really clarified it. We would talk sometimes for an hour before work – so excited about a simple truth that’s been clarified. Those are special times as a couple to be able to do that together.

MARK

After hearing their testimonies and the work of God in their lives, we asked them what one word of encouragement would be to those listening in.

We’re not a couple where we had our devotions every morning for years and years. We didn't really do that. We would each read on our own, and sometimes wouldn't read. There were those seasons where it was dry. So, Back to the Bible Canada was almost like a catalyst to get us talking. I might have been listening to Dr. John in my shop and have come in the house and said, "Cori, I have to tell you what this is about!" It's like, these truths from God’s Word just opened up. We always 10 | DECEMBER 2017 + JANUARY 2018

...

Here’s what they said:

CORI One word comes to mind – hope. Don't lose hope. Go get some encouragement or give encouragement. Reach outside of yourself. I can even think of tuning in to Back to the Bible Canada. Just tune into things that can build into your life. Sometimes you can get tunnel

vision, but when you reach out to those in need, or let hope come in, I think those are good ways to be encouraged.

MARK One of the things that I'm thinking of right now is what Jesus said in John 10:10, "I came that they might have life and have it to the fullest, have an abundant life." The abundant life doesn't mean a safe life; the abundant life actually doesn't even mean a comfortable life. As we experience joys and sorrows, perhaps the abundant life means those gaps become greater and our joys become greater. But often our sorrows can become deeper, and I think it gets us in touch with the heart of the Father, with the heart of the Creator. We start to understand His heart. Something happened when our daughter was very, very sick – near to what we thought was the end. I was pruning my grapevines and I was sensing God speaking to me through Scripture, or just into my heart. The idea was that God gave His Son to save the whole world – to save me. Would He then break my daughter in order to bring people into His kingdom? To my shame, it was a very challenging thought. I said, "Absolutely not. You can break me, but I don't want you to break my daughter anymore." I was just a heartbroken father, and at that moment I realized why God is God and why I'm not. He has a higher plan. As I think of this abundant life, we as Christians sometimes want to pursue comfortable, safe, financially secure, and health conscious lifestyles. Yet, it's often not God's plan for our life. He

is getting us all ready for heaven, and He wants to bring as many people as He can into His kingdom through us. It's often through the suffering and the hurts that we've seen in our own lives that many, many friends (some of which are non-Christians) want to hear about our experience, asking, “How did you get through it?” All we get to say is, "Well, we actually didn't do so good getting through it, but God was sure good carrying us through it. We actually weren't that faithful, but He was so faithful. There were times we wanted to turn away, and He just wouldn't. He would never turn away and He carried us through those times."

CORI You know, there was a moment when I had a pretty hard heart and was sad, and a young girl that I was chatting with asked me, "Are you praising Him?" I remember thinking, "Not at all. Not even a little bit." That was a turning point for me. I realized that my heart was just angry and sad, but the moment I took a little step of praising Him for something good, maybe something beautiful in that day, and then another step of praise, and another one, it just opened up my eyes to see all His good things that never went away, but I had just failed to see. ... We’re so thankful for people like Mark and Cori. Not only do they support our ministries, but their testimonies of God’s faithfulness in their lives is encouraging to us all. We hope you were encouraged, like we were, by Mark and Cori’s words.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS” IN THE MIDST OF “HAPPY HOLIDAYS”

ISAAC DAGNEAU is the Ministry Manager of indoubt, the young adult ministry of Back to the Bible Canada. indoubt discusses relevant issues of life and faith with a biblical perspective through a weekly audio program, articles and Bible studies.

If you’re like me, it’s so easy to let “Happy Holidays” take over your “Merry Christmas.” We can let culture’s version of Christmas take up all our time, energy and money, and forget all about the real reason and purpose for Christmas. As a quick refresher, here’s what Christmas is about: • To remember the incarnation (God became man) so that we might respond in awe and wonder toward God. • To reflect on the fact that God descended from His heavenly throne to an earthly feeding trough. • To sing songs with one another to God about His great love. 12 | DECEMBER 2017 + JANUARY 2018

• To thank Him for the gift of Christ. So, how can we emphasize these things in the midst of a culture that would rather sit on Santa’s lap? Or sing songs about snow and bells? Or write lists of what they want? Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy a lot of what culture’s made this season to be. But as a Christian, I have a greater priority. Yes, I can experience and enjoy much of culture’s Christmas, but that should never interfere with Christianity’s Christmas. So, here are three ways to intentionally spend time, energy and money to prioritize Christianity’s Christmas during this season:

1.

Initiate and host a get-together with friends and/or family where the

soul purpose is to read the “birth” accounts in the gospels (Matthew 1:182:23 and Luke 1:26-2:21). Remember the humility and love of God, and sing some carols. This may be completely out of your comfort zone, but consider the importance! Formal church events will most likely have similar meetings, but don’t rely on them. Informal get-togethers can be powerful and enjoyable.

2.

Give some Christmas cards away that invite people to reflect on the awe and wonder of the incarnation. No, you don’t need to be an artist, a poet or a recognized theologian to do this. It can be as simple as this: “Hey (insert friend or family member’s name)! I was reading John 1:1-18 and wanted to encourage you to read it and reflect on it this Christmas. Merry Christmas!” See how simple that was?

3.

Spend an hour or more in prayer asking specifically that God would call many people to Himself this season.

Prayer is not only incredibly practical (God moves because of our prayers) but internally transformative too. Our hearts will be excited to see people in the darkness come to the light when we pray for that to happen. These are simply three of many ways we can encourage ourselves and others to live intentionally this Christmas season. At the same time, in no way should we be “Happy Holiday Haters” and look down on anyone and everyone who enjoys culture’s Christmas. Rather, we should be the most joy-filled people this season as we not only participate in the best activities that culture enjoys, but spend more time, more energy and more money on promoting and experiencing the real Christmas. So, during this season, work hard to not let the “Happy Holidays” distract you from a “Merry Christmas.”

HOSTED BY

"IF YOU’RE A CHRISTIAN, IS IT OKAY TO CONSUME MARJIUANA RECREATIONALLY?” To some, this may seem outrageous. But to others, it’s a very valid question. What exactly does the Bible have to say about this?

WHY I BELIEVE THE CHRISTMAS STORY

BY RAY DUECK

It is difficult to accept how our culture has shifted so quickly from embracing the traditional Christmas story to now feeling that saying "Merry Christmas" will offend shoppers and the buying public. Instead of celebrating Christmas, we enjoy “the holidays,” or “Winter Solstice.” Do you notice the changing traditions taking place regarding Christmas? Have you become aware of how the most crucial event in history is hiding behind political correctness, parties, decorations and the big performance? Christ is no longer considered to be the reason for the season, nor the center 14 | DECEMBER 2017 + JANUARY 2018

of the celebration. Even in some of our churches, the manger has been relegated to the side or entirely removed from the stage, allowing “the show” to be the main focus. Dancing choirs and singing Christmas trees have left no room for the nativity scene – the manger where Christ was born. So why do I believe in the Christmas story? I believe because it is a historical fact. Christ was not born in a mythical place. The cities, towns and villages mentioned in the Bible are places that you can visit today. I have walked on the streets and felt the water of

the Jordan River. I have visited the manger square and the shepherd's fields in Bethlehem. Archeologt shows evidence of the Roman occupation of Judea during the birth of Jesus, proving that the historical facts surrounding the Christmas story are accurate. I believe because I believe the Bible. I believe God loved us so much that He made a covenant with mankind, that He would provide a way for us to be reconciled with Him. That way was Jesus. I believe in the Christmas story because it changes people’s lives today. It has changed mine. How could I not believe? Because I believe in the Christmas story, I would like to give you an invitation to believe as well. The Bible tells us that God will forgive and save us from our sins if we believe what Jesus did for us. The result is eternal life. The Bible says, "…by grace you have been saved, through faith – it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). “The wages of sin is death, but

the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). With a gift-giving God like that, I don’t want to lose the meaning of Christmas! If you have never accepted the most significant "Christmas gift" you could ever receive, I would urge you to do so by praying the following prayer: "Dear Jesus, I believe that You died for me, and took the punishment for my sins. I want to receive Your gift of salvation and eternal life. I surrender to You all I am and all I have. Thank You for giving me eternal life!” If you prayed that prayer or have questions about how to receive Christ, contact us and we’ll answer your questions. Let’s make sure that the manger is central in all our celebrations this Christmas! “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a Baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Luke 2:11-12

WHAT DO I BELIEVE?

BEN LOWELL is the CEO of the Good News Broadcasting Association of Canada

“What do I believe?” This question shapes who we are and how we live. It’s a question that fuels the existence of Back to the Bible Canada.

• “Our daughter is 17. She believes she is bisexual. She has kissed a girl and is confused. She has a strong love for God. How do we deal with this?”

So, what do I believe - about God, faith, sin, suffering, sexuality…? Fundamental questions of life and faith are increasingly elusive in a society progressively hostile to the Bible and its teaching.

• “How do I get past the guilt of living a sinful life, and the doubt that Jesus could forgive me?”

Difficult questions like: • “I am praying really hard every night and why are people and children still being killed? Why doesn’t God do something? Why doesn’t He stop it?” 18 | DECEMBER 2017 + JANUARY 2018

If you were to ask, “What is Back to the Bible Canada about?” The answer would be, “We teach the Bible.” For 60 years, this has been our purpose and mission, the focus of our attention, and the measure of success. Brian wrote, “Back to the Bible Canada has transformed my walk with God

by allowing my mind to be renewed daily through the spirit-filled biblical teaching of Dr. John Neufeld.” Alisa said, “Back to the Bible helps me to remember God’s character and promises throughout the day. It helps me to make wise ‘kingdom’ choices in a very distracting world.” Another wrote, “Your messages continue to help me in my walk [as I’m] discovering God’s purpose in my life. I continuously pray for your ministry.” A few days ago, I sat down with ministry friends Mark and Cori to talk about their faith journey, and the role Back to the Bible Canada has played. They found themselves in a fight for family and faith greater than they could have ever imagined. What they described as an “idyllic” time of life crumbled with the news of a near fatal illness that fell upon their daughter and a horrific snowboarding accident that caused their son to suffer paralysis. “We had to step back and rethink, restudy and let God speak into our lives in a new way,” Mark said. “He is sovereign, He is good, but it doesn’t always feel that way, and we needed to trust Him. It wasn’t easy. It was very difficult. Looking back to when I first started listening to Back to the Bible Canada, listening to John – and it’s not about John of course, it’s about God’s word – but how he talked, how he conveyed it, it was just like fresh water to me. Perhaps the years of hurt and suffering and pain, our thirst for truth, our thirst for the real stuff of God’s Word was more profound than when we even recognized.”

Back to the Bible Canada is privileged to play a part in the lives of people like Mark and Cori, sharing God’s Word to people young and old as they search for answers. One of the greatest challenges of ministry is raising the necessary funds to air the Bible teaching programs. The annual on-air cost is approximately $1,000,000. December is a critical time toward meeting that demand. This month, our goal is to raise $400,000 by December 31. So, how to we break this number down? It could be 2,000 people across Canada offering a gift of $200, or any combination of gifts. But it comes down to those who share a passion for Bible teaching and join together to do what they can – some more than others, perhaps less – but the combined effort ensures that these Bible teaching ministries will continue to be heard every day. Our key verse for Christmas and the focus of Dr. John Neufeld’s Christmas series is John 1:12. “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” This is the promise of Christmas for you and all who believe. Help us continue to offer the gift of this good news! On behalf of myself, Dr. Neufeld and the ministry team at Back to the Bible Canada, may Christmas be filled with new revelations of His goodness as you receive, believe and embrace your position as a child of God.
