how we betray the bible
BY DR. JOHN NEUFELD
P
salm 119 is a Psalm in praise of the impact of Scripture.
• Verse 9 promises success in our ongoing struggle for holiness: “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to Your Word.” • Verse 11 promises victory as we seek to master the flesh: “I have stored up Your Word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” • Verse 25 promises that we will overcome in life’s extremities: “My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to Your Word.” • Verse 42 promises that we will be able to respond to our detractors: “Then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in Your Word.” • Verse 105 promises certainty in life choices: “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” • Verse 130 promises wisdom: “The unfolding of Your Words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”

The Bible makes the claim that it is the Word of God and comes with God’s authority. When we pay attention to it, we benefit and are distinctly transformed.
When we pay attention to it, we benefit and are distinctly tranformed. As I write these words, I have just attended a lecture called “Ten Ways of Undermining Scripture Authority” by Dr. D.A. Carson, professor of New Testament at Trinity International University in Chicago. I will concentrate on three ways we betray that we do not trust the Bible. JUNE + JULY 2016
1. “Selective silence.” We fear that some of the Bible’s texts will cause dispute or bring division, and so they are left unsaid. At Back to the Bible Canada, we stress expositional preaching. That means that we simply follow the Bible through, verse by verse. Regardless of whether these passages are popular, divisive or challenging, they are what God wants to communicate, and they provide the blessings Psalm 119 speaks of. 2. “Heart embarrassment of the text.” Here we encounter passages – perhaps on hell, sexuality, materialism or consumerism – that we don’t like talking about. When we are embarrassed about what the Bible says, we betray that we love culture’s wisdom more than God’s wisdom. 3. “Lust for the contemporary philosophical agenda.” Dr. Carson explained that our culture now celebrates that it’s impossible to fully know anything. We often hear that no interpretation of the Bible JUNE + JULY 2016
is to be preferred above another. Everything, then, is relegated to personal opinion. When we fully embrace the teachings of Scripture, when we celebrate the authority of God’s Word over the words of our culture, when we become bold in our proclamation of God’s truth, we encounter Christ Himself, the Word made flesh. It really is not possible to know Jesus apart from His Word, and it’s not possible to walk after Jesus when we betray we do not trust His Word. At Back to the Bible Canada, we are not only committed to trusting in God’s Word, we are also committed to modeling that trust so that our listeners also find that God’s Word brings life. Dr. John Neufeld is the Canadian Bible Teacher of Back to the Bible Canada, and is well known both nationally and internationally for his excellence in expositional Bible teaching. Dr. Neufeld is passionate about bringing the truth of God’s Word to life across Canada and beyond.

to be perfectly honest BY PHIL CALLAWAY
H
ave you ever told a lie? Someone said of former New York Yankees manager George Steinbrenner, “You can tell when he’s lying; his lips are moving.” A recent study claims that 91 per cent of people regularly lie. 20 per cent admit they can’t get through a day without conscious, premeditated white lies. College students were asked which generation they were most likely to trust. 79 per cent said their grandparents’ generation, 68 per cent said their parents’ generation, but only 25 per cent trusted their own generation. Here are some common lies: • • • • •
“It wasn’t me.” “You haven’t changed a bit.” “The cheque is in the mail.” “That looks so good on you.” “I just need five minutes of your time.” • “Let’s have lunch sometime.” • “Open wide, it won’t hurt a bit.”
6
Ever said any of those things? An editor called asking me to write a book. “Phil, I want you to see if you can tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth for an entire year. Oh, and keep a diary.” I said, “I’m sorry, you’re breaking up on this end.” The truth is, as my First Nations friend Wayne likes to say, “I had reservations.” I have battled hypocrisy. When Jesus accused the Pharisees of honouring Him with their lips while their hearts were far from Him, I knew he was speaking to me. That’s why I wanted to write about this. When I told friends I was taking a truth vow, their eyebrows shot up to their bangs. I was a little concerned myself. Could I stay happily married being completely honest with my wife? Should I talk about lust or anger or struggles with my faith? During this year I learned more of what it means to honour God JUNE + JULY 2016
with both my lips and my life, and I’ve come to appreciate the grace of God in a new way. In the 18th century, King Frederick of Prussia visited a prison in Berlin. One inmate after another tried to convince the monarch of his innocence, all except for one man who sat quietly while the rest told their lengthy stories. The king saw him sitting there and finally asked, “Why are you here?” “Armed robbery, your Honour.” “Were you guilty?” “Oh yes, sir.” King Frederick then gave the

guard an order. “Release this guilty man,” he said. “I don’t want him corrupting all these innocent people.” Sometimes the truth will get us in trouble, but ultimately when we admit our failures and sins and our need for God’s amazing grace, the truth sets us free. Does this mean we have to stop saying, “You look slim in that dress” or “I’ll pray for you”? Yes. I love these words from 1 Peter 3: “He who would love life and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking guile; let him turn away from evil and do good.” With God’s help, we can live lives characterized by integrity and joy. Honest to God. Phil Callaway is the host of the hit radio show Laugh Again, and an award-winning author and speaker.

engaging the church G
OD DESIRES FOR US TO FLOURISH.
He wants to see us satisfied in Him. He wants to give us abundant life and see us live life to the fullest. That’s why He makes it so clear that we are to know and obey Him and His commandments, for they’re put in place “for our good always.” (Deut. 6:24) How does God make this work? Through His established church. Multiple Scriptures point to the truth that community through the church is necessary and mandatory for faith. In these last days, God set up the church as the way for Christians to know and obey Him. This being the case, here are three things Jesus wants to remind us about the church. 1) Jesus established the church. Ephesians 4:11 says, “[Jesus] gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the

work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” It’s easy for us to look only at church as a program rather than the body of Christ. Jesus set up this community to encourage believers to “attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God” by “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,” and by considering “how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another” (Ephesians 4:13; 5:19; Hebrews

10:24-25). 2) Jesus wants us to respect, listen and obey our pastors. The rise of autonomous freedom has greatly affected the church as people don’t revere their pastors like they used to. This movement of individualism has caused many sheep to stray. Our culture shouts, “Believe what you want! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!” This is a dangerous mindset. God knows that we need direction, comfort and discipline in this dark world. That’s why He established pastors to teach, edify, encourage and rebuke His sheep. To be a Christian is to think biblically and test everything in light of Scripture. If your pastor is not being biblical, don’t feel obligated to obey him. Your Shepherd is Jesus, and He’s working through many shepherds on earth. Those shepherds are your pastors. 3) Jesus wants us to engage with our church community. God has designed growth, JUNE + JULY 2016
encouragement and discipline for Christians to work out in community. If you see yourself as an introvert or “not a people person” who struggles with social interaction, I understand how this step can seem daunting. I’m not saying you have to pretend to like and engage every single person, but it’s important nonetheless to understand that God designed us to engage other Christians. Some people will engage more, some less. The fact is that we must engage. We can’t use our perceived ideas of being introverted as an excuse to “do Christianity” on our own. These three reminders should encourage you to allow the Bride of Christ to teach you what it means to know and obey God – all for His glory and your satisfaction in Him. back to the bible canada’s work in india BY CHARLES THEODORE
O
ur recent journey to Hyderabad, India was a joy and a confirmation of our calling to partner with Back to the Bible in India (BTTBI) to sustain and grow the Bible teaching ministry in that country. One of the great confirmations was an unsolicited testimony at an evening service where Dr. Neufeld was speaking. From behind the pulpit, associate Pastor Theodore, of the Centenary Baptist Church, spoke graciously of the impact ministry of Back to the Bible had upon him personally in his younger years and how that impact shaped his own spiritual journey, calling and fundamental understanding of God. This testimony was among many others who shared with us the spiritual impact of men like Theodore Epp, Warren Weirsbe and Woodrow Kroll, upon individuals and the church at large in India. Now the excitement was growing as to the potential partnership
12
between BTTBC and BTTBI, and how a renewed commitment and investment into the legacy of Bible teaching could impact the lives of so many in that country. Let me share with you a letter sent to us from Associate Pastor Charles Theodore regarding his experience of Back to the Bible. Any building that has withstood storms has its foundation on a solid ground. Back to the Bible has provided a biblical foundation for eternity for many people. Here I stand as a living testimony to the impact of Back to the Bible. In fact, this ministry has stood to be a blessing to my entire family. I came to know Back to the Bible through my father who was a dedicated listener of the daily broadcast. It was just in the early days of my new birth experience that I found myself searching through a stack of books and Bible resources that had collected around the house, magazines from the 70’s that had provided valuable insights to my faith journey. Among all of these impactful resources were the Bible JUNE + JULY 2016
teaching cassette tapes of Theodore H. Epp, the founder of Back to the Bible. I had listened to Dr. Epp’s series including “The Life of Joshua,”“Why do Christians Suffer” and “The Life of Jonah.” I read some of his books, including Adventuring by Faith, God Planned it for Good and – perhaps most exciting for me –Elijah: A Man of Like Nature. Along with teachings from other prominent preachers like Ord. L. Morrow and Warren W. Wiersbe, these books played a significant role in my spiritual development. Even though I never met these men, it was through the ministry of Back to the Bible that I came to know more about our God and His ways.
“This truth transformed my mind and I began to think differently, more like the men of God I had been studying.” The most admirable part of the ministry of Back to the Bible, however, was their faithfulness in teaching the truth of the Word of God. This truth JUNE + JULY 2016
transformed my mind and I began to think differently, more like the men of God I had been studying. Now as a pastor, I can clearly see how my preaching was so profoundly influenced by the Bible teaching of Back to the Bible. I have gained so much not only for my own personal journey, but also in my skills and abilities as a preacher of the Bible. Today I am blessed to serve as a pastor of Centenary Baptist Church, Secunderabad, and I thank God for ministry of Back to the Bible and the Bible teachers over the decades for the immense blessing that was brought into my life through their faithful commitment to teaching God’s Word. We are blessed with a wonderful opportunity to share the Bible teaching of BTTBC and Dr. John Neufeld to countless number who need to hear. And with you gracious support, we will begin to air new daily Bible teaching programs in English, Telugu and Hindi. So please consider supporting this great international cause of the proclamation of the gospel.

Reaching T hree Generations with God ‘s Word
“On December 16, 2015, the Lord took [my mom] home. She would have been 95 this month. Mom and Dad’s first radio must have been picked up at some auction sale and only for the sake of hearing world news. However, Mom had heard you can even get good sermons on it, but ...how to find them? So she turned it on and and slowly turned the dial, and to her astonishment, immediately recognized a Bible portion being read, and listened with joy right to the end of the half-hour program of Bible teaching and singing. From that time on, the daily Back to the Bible broadcast became an important part of her life and our home before I was even born. Through it, she grew much in her understanding of the Scriptures. After many years, she was no longer able to get the program clearly on any station in our area but continued to receive and read [the ministry] letters till now. It was just in the last few weeks that I finally plugged her headphones into my computer to hear Back to the Bible online. She looked like she had found a long-lost friend as she listened happily to part of a series on heaven over the next several days. Though the founder who preached in those early years, Theodore Epp, has long since gone to be with the Lord, she was so happy to hear for herself that the current Bible teacher on the program still faithfully expounds the Scriptures. I’m thankful for her appetite to learn the Word of God. One of my young nephews shared with me how Mom’s funeral really spoke to him and his wife in different ways. They are vibrant, witnessing believers but he said one change they have made is more discipline with daily time in the Word. The second change being that he is now listening to Back to the Bible with his headphones whenever he is doing jobs around the home after work. I was thrilled to hear that! I guess we had never introduced him to Back to the Bible! So that is the story of how your ministry is now being a blessing to a third generation as you faithfully teach the Word!”

ecently on Laugh Again, we celebrated our 500th radio broadcast. We have you, our loyal listeners, to thank. Well, at least most of you. I did meet a guy in Ottawa who shook my hand and said, “You know, I listen to Laugh Again every day. I’ve had an image of you in mind.” Then he paused slightly and said, “I prefer that image.” But I do want to thank the rest of you. I thought it would be fun today to recount a few lines that have made listeners laugh out loud, or as they say nowadays, “LOL.” One young guy confided in me that he had just purchased a drive-through coffee and taken a sip when he heard me say, “You know a man’s best friend is a dog, right? If ever you doubt this, try a little experiment. Lock your wife and your dog in the bathroom

for about 20 minutes. When you open the door, see who’s glad to see you.” I am happy to report that the poor guy snorted coffee onto the inside of his windshield. Do they make windshield wipers for the inside of your car? They should. Many of you have enjoyed my stories of the joys of getting a little older. You particularly enjoyed the line, “I’m getting so old I don’t even know what to wear anymore. I asked my wife, ‘Do I wear boxers or briefs?’ She said, ‘Uh… depends.’” Many have appreciated stories of my fifth grade teacher Miss Weismuller, the one with the bun in her hair too tight to allow her to smile. She’s the one who told me, “There’s a bus leaving in ten minutes. Be under it.” You may remember the time my five-yearold son Steve and I were passing a graveyard and he pointed JUNE + JULY 2016

out the window at a hole in the ground and a pile of dirt beside it. “Look Dad!” he said. “One got out.” That’s our reason for hope today. One got out – Jesus has risen. Just before I got up to speak on one occasion, a lady came over to me with tears in her eyes. She pulled up her sleeve and showed me the scars on her wrist. “Thank you for giving me hope,” she said. “I would not be alive without this program and your books.”
God gets every ounce of credit. All I’ve tried to do is cheer people up and point them to the only reason I know for hope: Jesus loves me. God sent His Son into the world not to condemn us, but to save us and to fill us with life and the hope of eternity with Him. JUNE + JULY 2016

Back to the Bible and WDCX It is almost impossible to describe the magnitude and far-reaching impact of a ministry partnership such as BACK TO THE BIBLE CANADA and WDCX RADIO. The simplest description might be that we have shared decades of God’s Word being broadcast through the miracle of radio! From Theodore Epp to Woodrow Kroll, and now Dr. John Neufeld, the straight-forward teaching of the Bible in a real-life and applicable way has no doubt impacted tens of thousands throughout Southern Ontario and Western New York. As we participate in events from Toronto to Buffalo, we hear first hand from listeners who often come to us with tears in their eyes saying that Back to the Bible has not only changed their life, but an entire family and generations to come. One of the most unique and special attributes of Back to the Bible continues to be that it is a program produced directly for the radio audience. As such, it has the ability to open up God’s Word in a teaching style that reaches people right where they are - physically in their car or at home in the kitchen, and spiritually as they can tune in and connect with a life-changing message. As the most powerful Christian station in North America, we have the opportunity to work with many ministries and interact with their leadership. It is such a privilege to meet and work with so many great people across North America. The leadership of Back to the Bible Canada are simply the best as they consistently exude excellence in everything that God gives them to do. Our relationship with them is an example of what ministry partnerships for the sake of gospel should represent. It is our fervent prayer that Back to the Bible would remain one of the backbones of WDCX’s programming for many decades to come! Brett Larson, General Managar WDCX-FM Radio
