Bodoni is a main choice amongst designers when it comes to fashion, especially toward feminine products. Brands such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and other high end fashion label use Bodoni for their logotypes. Bodoni is also used in fashion magazines on covers, in spreads, or posters due to the font being more legible in larger sizes and standing on their own. This type may be seen as more feminine due to its tall and thin strokes and serifs and slightly condensed forms. Bodoni’s style and characteristics link to resemblance of society’s current ideal model.

BEHIND
Scenes the
with the Giambatista BODONI Originally designed around 1788 and appeared in 1790 by Giambattista Bodoni, an Italian printer, punch cutter, and typographer, this typeface has appeared in many designs throughout history. After the French Revolution, the typographic world was shifting away from the rococo style. Giambattista’s typeface was key in this transition and he was credited as the inventor of modern roman typefaces with the type creation that was named after him, Bodoni. Giambattista wanted his typeface Bodoni to be seen as well as read with people appreciating the letters as works of art rather than just simple communication. Bodoni led typography into the rise of the printing era. Giambattista’s original intentions for Bodoni was for it to be viewed as a work of art rather than just communication, so he would be proud to see Bodoni in it’s current use in fashion ads.
