Content Highlights: New Tournaments and Clubs…………………...4 Badminton in Indonesia…………………………5 Junior Ranking System Update………………...8 Ontario Winter Games Update…………………9

I have just returned from the World Masters Games Badminton in Sydney, Australia and met so many great people from literally around the world. Meeting all those people helped me realize that we have a great microcosm of the world here in Ontario and how lucky we are to have so many cultures all coming together in our sport of badminton. So, after such a great opening statement, where are we going with the Ontario Badminton Association. We are moving forward in a backward kind of way - we have taken a huge downward hit in our Grant money from the Ontario Government and really need to come up with ways to replace that lost money. While we are dealing with the financial reversal we are still moving forward with some big plans: - bringing a Grand Prix Badminton event to Toronto in 2011 (Pry Gnana and Jim Duncan) - introducing a Badminton Instructional Program for Ontario Teachers (Pry Gnana, Val Butler, Edith Hayman, Roger Wallis) - reviewing our Membership structure to improve members, revenue and service (Board and District Presidents) - upgrading our Website to be "cutting edge" (Eduardo Gregorio) - High Performance Practices and Camps for our Elite players are starting (OBA HP Committee, Coaches and Players) - Officials and Coaches Certification courses are changing and increasing (Val Butler and Susan Mussakowski) We need some real help in ALL forms of Sponsorship - one of the areas that we failed in with our Grant Evaluation was non-Government revenue generation. All in all some very worrying but very exciting times for OBA.

TJ Force Camp This summer I had the opportunity to train for five weeks in Gor (hall) Bantong, Jakarta, Indonesia. There I participated in the TH (Taufik Hidayat) Force Camp. I stayed in a house – with air conditioned rooms – with coach Hariawan, Loke Kok Pong (from Malaysia, training for three months), and around four other players in the camp. These guys were the nicest, funniest, and hardest-working badminton players I have ever met. Whenever I was not at the house sleeping or eating, I was out playing badminton. We practiced around six hours a day five days a week. I was quick to learn a bit of their language, Indonesian, and even a bit of Arabic, seeing as the majority of the population is Muslim. After my five weeks of training in close to 40-degree temperatures and a huge intake of rice I noticed a drastic improvement in my game. Being lighter I can move much faster and my shots are much tighter. I had the best time of my life. McLean Brownlee

6 I, along with 17 other OBA players attended the RSL/Ahuntsic Badminton Camp in Montreal August 10 to 14 lead by coaches: Hirota, Lino, Kim and Kanno. I had attended the two previous camps held at the Ridges badminton club and my badminton game benefitted immensely from these coaches who travelled all the way from Japan to share their knowledge with both players and coaches. The camp covered strokes, speed training, physical conditioning, and tactics for singles and doubles. Three things that separate this camp from other badminton camps is the detail explanation given by the coaches before and after we perform the drills. The second thing that is unique is the emphasis placed on feeding, especially for the multi bird drills. Finally, they keep statistics on the players who participate to provide feedback to the players so that they can compare their performance against other Canadian players and with Japanese players. With available 10 courts, there was plenty of court time for all participants. Mr Naomichi, being an experienced badminton player himself, provided excellent translation of instructions to the participants. All coaching staff worked very hard in improving the competitive skill of the player. Feedback from the players and coaches that I talked to were all positive. I would like to thank David Dai of RSL Canada for sponsoring this camp and to Fei Tam for looking after the ODBA junior players. Corey G Hum

Clubs are invited to contact Dave Kumar, OBA Director Awards Programme with names of volunteers who have served with a club for 5, 10, 15 or 20+ years. Volunteers can be coaches, officials, executive members – any volunteer capacity.

Ontario Junior Ranking System (OJRS) for 09-10 The Ontario Junior Ranking System is a ranking system for Junior players competing on a Provincial and National circuit level. The OJRS awards points to players based on the competitive level of the competition and the round achieved by the player - the higher the round achieved the higher the points obtained. Points are also awarded for ‘B’ or consolation round events. A player’s ranking is determined by accumulating the player’s best 3 results over the last 12 months for each discipline (singled, doubles and mixed). The rankings are updated and posted weekly after each Provincial or National event. Some of the guiding principles of the OJRS are: · to encourage player participation and development through competition; · to better reflect player ability and performance at competition; · to promote fairness throughout. OJRS Objectives and purpose The OJRS system will track tournament results for Provincial and National Circuit events and is designed for Players, their Parents and their Coaches to: · provide feedback on standings and progress throughout the season; · provide a tool in which players can set and measure goals; · provide a means to discover and develop among their peers; · motivate and prepare players in their development; · encourage higher levels of participation and player development. The OJRS is also used by several organizations as a guide to: · qualify and seed players for circuit tournaments; · identify developing players suited for special programmes such as High Performance events; · work with product and financial sponsors to qualify player development and recognize player achievement. Ranking Guidelines – Summarized · Ranking is based on Best 3 results from a Provincial or National event. · Best 3 results for each singles, doubles and mixed event must have been played in the last 12 months. · Points are awarded for each successive round played in the Main rounds and ‘B’ or consolation rounds. · Base points are published as a Points Grid accessible through the OBA website under Junior Ranking. · Tournaments that are ranked must be sanctioned and listed by the OBA and must report and publish tournament results using Tournament Planner software.

For more information on the OJRS including some FAQ, please go online to the OBA website at www.ontariobadminton.on.ca under Junior Rankings, or see the OBA newsletter Ontario Badminton Today. Queries—please email JrRanking@OntarioBadminton.on.ca .

Round 2

Toronto defeated Laval #2

Round 3

Toronto defeated Sherbrooke 6 matches to 3 matches

Round 4 (FINALS)

7 matches to 2 matches

Laval #1 defeated Toronto 6 matches to 3 matches

SUNDAY – INDIVIDUAL EVENT (DOUBLES AND MIXED DOUBLES) Women’s Doubles Michelle Li and Josee Matte finished 1st place in this event against 22 other teams – they went undefeated in their pool with a 2 wins and 0 loss record and then won their semifinal 19-21, 21-17, 21-12 and the finals 21-8, 21-9 against a talented team from Laval. Men’s Doubles Mike Lawler and Jesse finished in 3rd spot in this event against 34 teams and as with our women had an unblemished record in the preliminary pool play and then won their quarter finals 21-8, 20-22, 21-4 against Laval and played the most exciting match of the tournament against Laval in the semifinals winning 21-17, losing 20-22 and losing 16-21 but in this match Toronto actually had match point in the second game but Lawler guessed wrong on the service return and made an unforced error to allow Laval to tie the score and move on to the win. But this pair is the best pairing Toronto has had in more than a decade and hopefully will challenge the best teams in the OUA this season. Mixed Doubles Mike Lawler and Michelle Li won the gold in this division and had little trouble throughout the tournament winning 3 matches in preliminary pool play and then quickly moving through the main event and dominating the tournament. Jesse Assing paired up with rookie Michelle Chow losing to the eventual finalists in three games and showed again that Chow is ready for a starting role. Raymond Zhang and Melissa Hill won their pool in preliminary round but lost in the quarter finals to a Laval team.

Final Results Women's Singles Nicole Grether defeated Charmaine Reid 21-12, 21-13 Women's Doubles Charmaine Reid/ Nicole Grether defeated Stephanie Ko/ Melody Liang 21-8, 21-14

Alberta Elite Series Badminton Tournament At the Alberta Elite Series Badminton Tournament Nicole Grether and I won the Women's Doubles title without dropping a game. In the semi finals we played the #4 seeds Stephanie Pakenham and Caroline VeZina and defeated them 21-3 21-11. In the finals we played against the #2 seeds Stephanie Ko and Melody Liang. We played with high pressure and speed, attacking smart and with very little errors, winning in two straight games 21-8, 21-14. In the women's singles action I had hard work to reach the finals. My first match was up against Florence Lavoie a top Canadian player for many years who wasn't seeded and after an hour match and tons of smashes I won 21-19, 19-21, 21-12. In the quarter finals I defeated the #4 seed Caroline VeZina 21-10, 21-9. The semi finals was another long 3 game match against #2 seed Valerie St-Jacques. Long rallies, tight dropshots and pump clears, we both moved a lot around the court and finally I was able to attack at the right times and won 16-21, 21-15, 21-14. Now into the women's final and up against my doubles partner Nicole Grether. Nicole played with high speed and accuracy which was hard for me to follow and won the match and gold medal in 2 games 21-12, 21-13. Our next tournaments will take us to Changzhou China, for the Li-Ning China Master Super Series and Tokyo, Japan, for the Japan Super Series Sept 15.
