Badminton Ontario currently has two main types of memebership: club and player. A club membership is referred to as ‘affiliation’, which is done through your district. Badminton Ontario is broken down into six districts; Toronto & District (TDBA), Western Ontario (WOBA), Central Ontario (COBA), Ottawa & District (ODBA), Georgian Bay & District (GBDBA), and Northern Ontario (NOBA). If you know what district you are in, you can fill out the form included in this package. If you don’t, please contact the BOn office or one of the district presidents below: BOn - Robyn Caton robyn.caton@badmintonontario.ca TDBA - Pry Gnana pry@badmintonbirds.com WOBA - Jeff Goldsworthy goldy@golden.net COBA - Russ Le Blanc russleblanc@rogers.com ODBA - Fei Tam kanatajrbc@yahoo.ca GBDBA - Alan Henry siralan.62@rogers.com NOBA - Frank Boulanger nobafb@yahoo.ca On each of the forms you will be asked for specific statistical information about your members like their age, gender, and any coaches/officials. Because we are a Provincial Sport Organization, we report the information on your form annually to the Ministry of Health Promotion & Sport, part of the Government of Ontario. Thank you in advance for taking the time to fill out the form in full. Affiliating with Badminton Ontario opens your club up to a wealth of programs and opportunities for all ages and level of play. You can view some of the programs offered in the second tab of this package called ‘CLUB SERVICES’.
Each of the Districts Affiliation and Insurance policies are slightly different. For the most part, General Liabiltiy Insurance is included with your affiliation; up to $5 million liability with the option to purchase sport accident insurance for an additional amount per individual member as set by your district. No matter how careful you are accidents happen and you can be sued by anyone who claims injury or damages resulting from your activities. You may not be liable but you will need to be defended in court. The Commercial General Liability Policy will pay those sums that the insured becomes legally obligated to pay as compensatory damages because of bodily injury to or damage to property of others, such as spectators, passers-by, property owners and others resulting from your operations or actions. Coverage includes your legal liability for injury to participants. Sport accident is an additional cost per member. With this, you are covered for practices, games, and team travel. This includes open gym time for members and covers members, participants, managers, coaches, executives and officials whose names have been submitted with your paperwork to your District. Any claims must be sent to the Badminton Ontario office within 30 days. For claim forms, please contact your District. Sport Accident benefits include dental, blanket accident reimbursement, principle sum benefits, accidental death, fracture and rehabilitiation benefits, tuition fees reimbursement, emergency transfer benefit and eyeglass/contact lense expense. There is no coverage for loss of wages, and this plan is secondary to any existing medical plan you may already have. More information on Affiliation & Insurance costs are found on each District’s forms on the next few pages.

A corporation, whether for profit or non profit, is required to have a governing Board of Directors. ‘Governance’ often refers to the Board’s activities to oversee the purpose of the organization and ensuring its success. The two main types of boards are; ‘working’ boards which are hands on, or administrative; and ‘policy’ boards where there are very clear lines and areas of focus between the board and CEO. Often with non profit, Boards are mostly ‘working’. It is common to have up to 10 directors on your board, with positions to be determined in your bylaws. Positions sometimes include President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Currently, Badminton Ontario has 10 directors including a President, Vice President, Director of Finances, Director of Membership, Director of Competitions, Director of Marketing, Director of Junior Development, Director of Player Developement, Director of Leadership, and a Director of High Performance. Quite often you will see the term ‘Director at Large’ which indicates a specified position has not been appointed to the individual.
A great resource for an overview on Board Operations, roles and responsibilities, and how to write your bylaws and policies is www.managementhelp.org/boards. Another great resouces is the Dalhousie University website for continuing eduction under ‘non-profit sector leadership’, which includes articles about best practices for non profit organizations.
Badminton Ontario uses a program called Tournament Software to run all of our Sanctioned tournaments. This program eliminates the need for a lot of paperwork, allows participants to register and pay online, automatically creates draws and round robins and gives consistency to our members. We give this program for free to all our hosts who are running sanctioned Badminton Ontario events. Because it can be quite daunting for first time users, we will teach you how to use the program. The training is free for sanctioned event hosts, and has a minimal cost to Affiliated members just to cover the Instructors time and resources. This quick session will be available through an online workshop. (For more information on sanctioned events, see ‘tournament hosting’ in the CLUB SERVICES section.) If you wish to receive more information on when the next clinic is, please email Anne Lim at competitions@badmintonontario.ca. You can get an overview of the program, as well as download the program at www.tournamentsoftware.com.

Bylaws are the rules governing the regulation of an organization’s affairs. These include things like what defines a member, how they join, meetings you have as a board, voting rights, board composition and election, and financial management. A copy of Badminton Ontario’s Bylaws, which were updated in 2010, are available on our website under resources. www.badmintonontario.ca
club services As an affiliated club, you have the opportunity to host a sanctioned Badminton Ontario event. A sanctioned event means that it is an official Badminton Ontario event, and covered by our insurance policy. Sanctioned tournaments allow participants to win points towards a provincial ranking which is important to competitive athletes when selecting competitions. Badminton Ontario currently has 5 tournament Series that members can compete in; • Junior High Performance Series (level A) • Junior Competitive Series (level B) • Adult Open Series (level A) • Adult Competitive Series (level B) • Masters Series (level ABC) Each of these Series has an Ontario Championship. In addition to these events, there is also the Junior Recreational Championships, Adult Recreational Championships, the Ontario Team Cup, and the Toronto Open (National Elite Series). Junior tournaments have 4-5 age groups; Under 12, U14, U16, U19 and sometimes U10. Clubs usually host 2 age groups, depending on the number of courts in their facility. Badminton Ontario gives a hosting grant to clubs for these tournaments: $750 for 4 courts, $1000 for 6 courts or more. Special consideration is given to clubs hosting all age groups at once. At these tournaments, you are required to provide volunteers to assist with the Draw Desk, cleaning of courts, calling games, securing the facility, as well as set up (courts, desks, computer and printer). Badminton Ontario will provide the Tournament Software file for player registration, collect entries, hire a certified Draw Desk official as well as certified Umpires for tournaments on this Series. If you wish to certify a member of your club in tournament software to become a certified Draw Desk official, please contact Badminton Ontario for details on the next training course. (For more information on tournament software, turn to page 11.) The other 4 Series are club run tournaments meaning there are certain standards each Series upholds to, but the club keeps the profit from the tournament. Tournaments on the Adult Open Series are strongly encouraged to have cash prizes. The championships for the Adult Open and Adult Competitive Series have a large cash purse. $5 from each entry from each of the santioned tournaments on these two series is automatically contributed to the championship prize purse. Every sanctioned tournament receives promotional support from Badminton Ontario. Tournament Series have individual posters that are created for marketing to members and the community. This will be created for you based on the information given in your ‘Tournament Hosting Application form’. These forms must be submitted before June 1, 2012 in order for your event to be considered for Sanctioning. (12.13 hosting application available online February 2012) All tournaments, sanctioned and non sanctioned, are published in the annual Players Handbook which includes a weekly calendar and planning tools for travel and accomodations. For full Tournament Series information, including detailed Sanctioning Guidelines, you can view the guide available on our website under ‘Resources’.

Badminton Ontario is a proud supporter of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). NCCP has two types of coaching opportunities available; Levels 1-5 and Competency Based. Levels 1-5 include three components: technical (in class and on court learning in a 2-day course), practical (a certain number of on-court practical coaching experience is needed for each level) and theory (which includes things like making ethical decisions and other multi-sport deliverables). Competency based is a new NCCP program which focuses on the participants needs in three streams; Community Sport, Competition and Instruction. This allows you as a coach to focus more on which type of coaching you would like to do. For more information on these three streams, visit www.coach.ca and click on the ‘NCCP Training’ link at the top of the page. Upcoming coaching clinics are announced on the home page of our website, information is emailed to our members and event listings are created on our website and facebook pages. Badminton Ontario also offers a High School Coach certification through a series of clinics called ‘Focus Clinics’. These clinics are three separate days with focuses on Singles, Doubles and then Mixed Doubles and helps coaches learn Badminton Ontario and Black Knight present: how to enable and empower their athletes. These clinics are geared towards high school and grade school coaches with focus clinics who have a short season. This then enables them to create solutions and strategies of their own. The technical aspects of the Focus clinics include game etiquette, single and Birdzooka feeding techniques, game situations, stroke-movement patterns, dynamic stretching and appropriate cool down routines, attack and defence positioning and more. membership services Quest for Gold is the Ontario Athlete Assistance Program (OAAP) and is funded by the Government of Ontario, through the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport (MHPS). The goal of the Quest for Gold Program is related to the Enhanced Excellence goals of the Canadian Sport Policy – to improve the performance and number of Ontario athletes performing at the national and international level; thereby contributing to the improved performance of Canada at international competitions. Specific objectives of the program are: a) To help athletes continue their pursuit of athletic excellence at the highest levels of national and international competition; b) To encourage athletes to stay in Ontario to live and train; c) To compensate athletes for earnings lost while training; d) To enable athletes to successfully pursue excellence in sport while fulfilling their educational goals; e) To increase athlete access to improved high performance coaching; and f) To enhance training and competitive opportunities available to athletes. The program will provide direct financial assistance to Ontario junioraged athletes through an “Ontario Card” designation. “Junior-aged athlete” is defined as those athletes who fall within the eligible age range for the Canada Games - 11 to 22 years of age. Badminton Ontario’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) has identified that we are a late development sport and so athletes can be more than 22 years of age and still be eligible for this funding. The intent of the OAAP is to provide funding to individual athletes based on their demonstrated commitment to high performance sport, allowing them to pursue athletic excellence at the highest levels of national and international competition. Badminton Ontario receives ten (10) cards and is distributed to eight (8) full cards - 4 male and 4 female and four (4) half cards - 2 male and 2 female. To apply, athletes must submit an Ontario Performance Plan document to Badminton Ontario describing their goals, tournaments they plan to attend as well as past finishes. These applications will be accepted until November 30, 2011 and the PSO - Athlete Agreement will only come into effect if an athlete is selected and accepts carding status through the OAAP program. Badminton Ontario will publish or make known the athletes nominated for Ontario Card status no later than January 14, 2012. Appeals will be allowed from athletes who have not been nominated by a PSO for Ontario Card status.

Ontario and Canada host both Winter and Summer Games. Badminton is a winter sport and we are a core sport of both the Ontario (OWG) and Canada Winter Games (CWG). The Ontario Winter Games is a celebration of youth in sport and is held every two years in even-numbered years. The next Games is scheduled for March 2012 in Collingwood. The badminton event is scheduled for March 9-11 with the Opening Ceremony on Thursday March 8. The Games bring over 3500 participants between the ages of 10& 22 and includes 27 sports. It is the largest multi-sport event in Ontario. Badminton Ontario is comprised of 6 districts and each district is responsible for organizing a team to compete in the OWG. Teams may be selected through District Championship standings or through a selection tournament. To find out how teams are selected in your district, please contact the representative from your area. (Contact information is found on the very first page of this package under ‘Affiliation & Insurance’.) The Canada Games started in 1967 under the motto ‘Unity through Sport’. Held every two years, alternating between summer and winter, the Canada Games are a key event in the development of Canada’s young athletes. As the best in their age group, these young competitors come to the Games having trained long and hard to be among those chosen to represent their respective province or territory and compete for the Canada Games Flag and Centennial Cup. With the Canada Games poised as a key step in the development of Canada’s future stars, Canada Games athletes are Canada’s next generation national, international and Olympic champions. Badminton Ontario announces the Selection Criteria for our Badminton team through our website and emails to members, approximately 5 months before the start of the Games. Athletes are selected through a Selection Tournament, where final standings depict who members of the team will be. Any ties and alternates are decided by a Selection Committee. Members of this team are required to participate in team training camps and sessions as well as athlete testing. Travel, accomodations and meals are funded by the Canada Games program. The Canada Games, a celebration of youth, sport, culture and community, are the product of ongoing collaboration between the Government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, host municipalities, the private sector and the Canada Games Council. At the 2011 Canada Winter Games, Badminton Ontario’s athletes brought home a team gold as well as many other individual gold, silver and bronze medals. As the last sport to play on the final day of competition, the outcome of the coveted Canada Games Flag depended on the result of the badminton competition. Going to a nail-biting three set game in the final event, our Badminton Team not only won Gold, but Gold for Team Ontario as well, capturing the Canada Games Flag. It was a true testament of team commradarie and support, not only by our badminton athletes but by athletes accross all the other sports as well. The 2014 Canada Winter Games location has yet to be determined, information and selection criteria will be posted on our website.
