* I always wanted to have a T-shirt made up saying, "I'm a Grass Root". Every institution has to work at bridging the inevitable credibility gap between the provincial-level administration and the local wherethe-action-is grass roots, OBA being no exception. Where does the responsibility lie for ensuring that the gap doesn't widen? Although the obvious reply is that it must be shared by all members of the association, those working at the provincial level have a special responsibility as stewards to ensure that the association's energies and resources are consumed in carrying out its mandate, its reason for existing, and don't become enmeshed either in unproductive bureaucracy or in programs that serve small minorities. Great care must be taken to ensure that activities designed to coordinate and cpmplement local activities do not offend, alienate or discourage local volunteers by the manner in which they are implemented. Like all successful OBA programs, Ontario Badminton is a bridge. It's a forum for the grass roots — their "brag book", if you like — in which average badminton players talk about what they've been doing, and therefore what's important to them. It's also a forum for provincial coordinators, giving them a chance to talk about opportunities available in badminton and to get a feel for whether their programs have wide-ranging support. While the response to our open-page policy continues to astound us, there are still many more of you from whom we'd love to hear. In 1939, Sir George Thomas, president of the International Badminton Federation (IBF), offered a challenge trophy for an international men's team championship. The first Thomas Cup Championship took place between 10 nations during the 1948-49 season. At present, teams are divided into four zones: Pan American (in which Canada is entered), Asian, Australasian, and European. Teams are made of 6 players, 3 to play singles and 2 doubles pairs. Plans are being made to publish an Ontario Badminton Yearbook. The first edition is targeted at 80-100 pages, to be prepared for release at the Brant County Open tournament this spring. The brainchild of Felipe Tauro of St Catharines and Edith Hayman of Brantford, the yearbook will be mostly photos but will also include a who's who, executives, disticts, champions in A, B. C. juniors etc, reports on tournaments. In short, a summary and highlighting of a year's Ontario Badminton. Anyone with photos or other material they'd like to contribute to the yearbook is asked to contact Felipe or Edith, or write to Ontario Badminton and we'll pass it along.

Have You Seen Stuart?? At 10:15 p.m. Friday, September 25th, a number of badmin ton people walked out of the Valhalla Inn on their way to an evening of dancing. Standing in front of the Inn was a lonely, forgotten, good-looking Englishman answering to the name of Stuart. Stuart was in Canada with a touring Rugby team and had not been picked up by his billet at the appointed time. Upon hearing that this friendly, foolish group were on their way: to an evening of merriment, Stuart gladly accepted an invitation to join in. Three carloads of people zoomed down the highway to the Constellation Hotel and the main bar soon rang with hearty laughter and the tinkle of glasses. Couples twirled and swirled on the' dance floor, a few even danced. Stuart was right in the middle of things,telling of his adventures during the last 30 days in the US and! Canada and how he hated to return to England. He danced, he laughed and best of all he bought several rounds of drinks. At 1:00 a.m. when the music stopped, three cars zoomed back down the highway to the Valhalla Inn and Stuart was invited to the hospitality room with the rest of the group. After several hours of mer riment most people decided to have a little rest before the Saturday morning meetings started. Several people suggested that Stuart remain in the hospitality room and sleep on the chesterfield therefore solving his accommodation problem. Stuart was overjoyed and asked that someone phone him at 7:30 a.m. to make sure he was up. We all said goodnight to our English friend. In the morning the wakeup call was put through! to Stuart, but no answer. One person was sent to check the room, but still no Stuart. How could we lose our new found friend so easily? If in your travels you happen to meet an Englishman named Stuart, about 26 years old, 5'10", 170 pounds, medium brown hair, last seen wearing grey slacks, white shirt and tie, navy v-necked sweater, please call the OBA office.

Jack Campbell a smashing event

To be there was a pleasure. If you missed it, read on—I'll have you wishing you hadn't. The organizers of this year's Jack Campbell Invitational, held annually in Kingston, did a superb job. Through a lot of time and effort, they were able to stage a tournament that was enjoyed by all. Co-hosted by the Limestone and Fort Henry Heights clubs, there were strong showings from throughout COBA. Trenton was well represented along with Durham, Sydenham, Belleville and our gracious hosts. A nice surprise was to see some of the district's top juniors in attendance, adding to the overall good calibre of play. The first upset of the tournament was registered by Chris Dorey and Rod Little, as they defeated Greg and Dudley Hill (the district's top men's team of a year ago) 17-15, 15-6 in a "semi-final match. The other men's semi also produced an upset of sorts is Alex Watson and Jeff Shanks downed Grant Kerry and David Int-Veen 15-12,1115,15-7. Before play resumed on Sunday, there were many rumors concerning the night before. It seems one of the members of the Durham BC was locked out of his room, left pounding on doors at 2:00 am to anyone who would welcome fruit of the loom. Need I say everyone attending the Saturday night social had a good time? Play continued throughout Sunday with some good badminton and again more upsets. Rusty Bassarab, our beloved district president, on this day should have been called the Hill-beater. He first defeated Dudley Hill and went on to defeat brother Greg in a quarter final match. Rusty then won a spot in the final defeating David Int-Veen in the semis. In another quarter-final men's singles match, Chris Dorey and Jeff Shanks had a typical Dorey^Shanks battle. It seems whenever these two get together the games are close and a treat to watch. Jeff got the better on this day defeating Chris 15-10, 12-15, 15-13.

Durham wins Doug Grant team trophy By Dave Int-veen

The Durham Region BC narrowly defeated host CFB Trenton to win the team event at the annual Doug Grant Tournament. This is the second straight year Durham has won. Never before has it been so close between clubs as the winner wasn't decided until the final few mixed games had been played. In this three flight tournament, Durham was powered by winners in the A Flight men's singles, an all Durham men's doubles finals, a semi final team in the A women's " doubles and a finalist in the B mixed. Trenton placed a finalist in the men's singles, a finalist in the women's doubles, captured the 'B' men's singles, the 'B' mixed and the C men's doubles. RMC finished third in the tournament with Sydenham fourth and Limestone of Kingston fifth. David Int-veen was the men's singles winner defeating newcomer Mike Dandurand of CFB Trenton in the semis and Harry Kreamer of Trenton, in the final. Junior clinics By Sue Vella John Mullin, a certified junior coach, will be conducting the next junior clinic on January 10 at Forest Hill Collegiate, Clinics will also be held on February 7 and March 7. All clinics start at 10:30 a.m. There is no charge to participate but players are asked to bring their own birds. Interested players should register with Sue Vella at 249-6862 at least one week prior to each clinic. Entries are limited to 24 players so don't delay. Brampton A correction to the article in our last issue: 8 teams from Brampton BC are entered in team play, of which 1 is in the Inter-Church League, the others in T&D. These teams are doing very well in the "wins" department. Another round robin and wine-beer cheese party was held on December 3.

Boulevard Invitational

Best national representation in recent years By Vicki Nock

Traditionally, the Boulevard Invitational has drawn top competitors from Ontario, Quebec and the northern United States. This year's edition was no exception. Players from Ottawa, Kitchener, St. Catharines, Gravenhurst, Oakville and Toronto made up the large Ontario contingent— 47 players in all. Once again, Quebec sent a powerful team of 14 players, mainly from the Montreal and Quebec City areas. Seven Americans took part including the ageless Tom Carmichael from Flint Michigan. This year, we were delighted to receive entries from both Alberta (Bev Suits, Ken Poole and Nancy Little) and New Brunswick (Mike and Dennis Butler). In all, 73 of the top players entered the tournament including six promising juniors from the Toronto vicinity. In the last few years, the tournament committee has witnessed a trend towards specialization by the players, with more and more participants selecting one or two events only. This year, that trend was reversed with the largest entry in three events and the smallest in one event. Consolation rounds, a rare feature for a tournament of this calibre, proved as popular as ever. The trophies for the winners in these rounds were once again donated by Bennett Trophies Ltd. For the first time, prize money for the main events was provided entirely from the proceeds of the tournament and still the total amount distributed to the winners and runners up compared favorably with that of previous years. Another major change was the elimination of seniors events from this tournament, 10

in anticipation of the Imperial Life Seniors & Masters Tournament to be hosted by the Boulevard Club in January. The extra court time provided made for a relatively early finish of play on Friday night. Consolation rounds were also completed on Saturday rather than Sunday morning as in the past. For those players scheduled for early Saturday morning, we were once again able to provide complimentary coffee and donuts. We are also delighted to report that unlike the past few years, there was no serious injuries during the 81 tournament. The dinner and dance in the main ballroom Saturday evening was well attended and provided a welcome opportunity to relax for players and committee members alike. As a member of the tournament committee, I would like to thank the players for their cooperation throughout the tournament. There is also a group of people who are rarely recognized for their contribution to the success fo the tournament—namely the management and staff of the Boulevard Club. This year in

particular, they went out of their way to accommodate us and the extra attention they gave to this tournament was very much appreciated by the committee. Highlights: Men's Singles: 37 players took part in this event, including 10 of the top 20 ranked players in the country. Mike Butler's trip from New Brunswick to Toronto was worthwhile. Seeded No. 6 in the draw, he defeated the first seed Pat Tyron in the quarters. Ken Priestman from St Catherines also had a good weekend. Unseeded in singles, he first eliminated the No. 3 seed Dan Brady (Michigan), then Brad Wowchuk (Toronto) in the quarters, and finally Mike Butler in the semis. Brad Wowchuk had also upset a seeded player—Ross Clarke No. 8. Keith Priestman (Kitchener), seeded 4th, defeated the No. 2 seed Jamie McKee (Toronto) in the semis. The final was a family affair with Keith Priestman defeating his brother Ken 1511,15-7.

Men's Doubles: 22 teams took part in this event, including 5 nationally ranked pairs. The pick-up team of Tom Carmichael and Keith Arthur (Boulevard Pro) proved to be a formidable one. They eventually lost in the quarters to the No. 2 team of Pat Tyron an Paul Johnson. Mike Bitten and Mike deBelle from Oakville upset the 4th seeded team of Dan Brady and Mike Adams, both from Michigan. Pat Tyron and Paul Johnson defeated the No. 1 ranked team of Jamie McKee and Raphi Kanchanaraphi in two 15-6,15-9. Women's Doubles: Unseeded Anne Yacyshyn and Cathy Clarke defeated the No. 3 seeded team of Margot Quinn (Ottawa) and Ghislaine Bouffard (Montreal). This win was all the more exciting since Cathy has not been playing regularly for some time. Unseeded Sue (Hill) Heatherington and Janette Martin (Toronto) also reached the semis by defeating the 4th seeded team of Jennifer Aziz and Sally Brinsmead from the host club. In the final, Linda Cloutier and Johanne Falardeau defeated Bev Suits (Calgary) and Denyse Julien.

Women's Singles: 22 players entered this event, seven of whom are nationally ranked. This draw was more predictable than the men's with the first 3 seeded women reaching the semis. However, the 4th seed Sally (Dakin) Brinsmead ran into trouble in her match with unseeded Johanne Falardeau and eventually lost in three games. Denyse Julien, (Rouyn) seeded No. 1, defeated Margot Quinn (Ottawa) in the semis while Linda Cloutier (Quebec City) seeded No. 2 defeated her doubles partner, Johanne Falardeau. Both Ontario singles champions, Jamie McKee of Toronto Granite and Margot Quinn of Ottawa RA, led a roster of excellent players who competed brilliantly in the first Toronto Open championships held December 11-13 at Centennial College in Scarborough. Both displayed assertive dominance, which they had shown earlier in the Dave Waddell Open in Ottawa, a sure sign that they are determined to defend their provincial titles successfully later this season. Mrs. Quinn captured two crowns, one in singles and the other in doubles. She breezed through the final match, subduing Janette Martin of Strathgowan 11-8,11-0. In the women's doubles, Miss Martin and Sue Heatherington of Strathgowan placed second to Mrs. Quinn and Sally Brinsmead of Toronto 15-3,15-6. In the men's singles final match, McKee wiped out club-mate Ross Clarke in a devastating display of power 15-2,15-0. "He reminds me of 12

Liem Swie King," John Tauro, a junior player from St. Catharines, commented. Indeed, both Mrs. Quinn and McKee are excellent athletes whose physical build does not conform to the myth that badminton players have to be lanky and tall and equipped with long legs and long arms like a spider to be competitive. And John Tauro is glad McKee is coaching the Ontario team for the Canada 1983 Winter Games, as he and brother Philip are training for the event. For Ken Priestman of St Catharines, the tournament will always be remembered for the $8 ticket he received when an alert policeman caught him making a U-turn where a sign read No U-Turn. "It was a gamble," he admitted. "I didn't want to be late for my match." Priestman, seeded third in the singles, was late for his first match Friday night. He drove to the Warden Woods campus of Centennial College with Dave deBelle, his doubles partner, and the dynamic team of Mike Bitten and Mike deBelle who show promise of international success. Laurence Yeung, who had an

exam at Guelph University, also turned up at the Warden Woods campus. And so did this reporter, with Florence Ho, Boris Chiu and Philip and John Tauro. The tournament was at the Markham campus. Chairman Jim Roszell, with the slightest frown on his smooth forehead, forgave the late-comers and graciously permitted them to play their matches. In the semifinals, Priestman lost to McKee 15-7, 15-7. In the recent Waddell Open in Ottawa, the semifinal match between these two stretched to three games, but in Toronto Priestman seemed to have become less aggressive and McKee had become more powerful. The other semifinal witnessed Clarke defeat Jeff Goldsworthy of Kitchener-Waterloo Granite 15-11,15-8. Ian Bishop of Ottawa seemed unable to cope with the Sidek serve, also known as the reverse-spin serve, that Priestman used in their third-round singles match. Priestman won 15-8,15-4.

In her first tournament this season, last year's triple intermediate and triple B champion, Florence Ho of the St Catharines Badminton Club, won an upset victory over fourth-seed Nancy Little of Boulevard 11-5,10-12, and 11-2. However, Miss Ho suffered psychological disadvantage in her semifinal match against provincial champion Margot Quinn and bowed out of the tournament by scores of 11-4,11-1. "Margot is too good, too strong, "Miss Ho acknowledged even before their match. Third-seed Janette Martin defeated second-seed Sally Brinsmead in the other semifinal match 8-11,11-3 and 11-6.

The veteran Thai showed fatigue in the second and third games, while the young Thomas Cup aspirants were tireless. Age gave in to youth, especially because a bit of overweight came with age. Bitten and deBelle eliminated Clarke and Goldsworthy in the semifinals 15-7,15-12. McKee and Kanchanaraphi sidelined Priestman and Dave deBelle in the other semifinal match 15-7,15-10. It was definitely not the tournament for Ken Priestman, and he decided to give up his chess game with Dave deBelle and go out to his car. "Where'd you park? "Phil Tauro asked him. "Where it says Motorcycles Only. I put a sign on it: "This Is An Over-sized Motorcycle." Frustrated was the word to describe this promising player who had been invited to join the Thomas Cup pool. Laurence Yeung predicted that Ken Priestman would become an international player of note if he worked hard enough. teams in the tournament. They clobbered Miss Martin and Mrs Heatherington in the finals 15-6,15-3. They also defeated Ann Wist of Strathgowan and Mona Panchal of Oakville in the semifinals 15-4, 15-12. Miss Martin and Mrs Heatherington eliminated Anne Yacyshyn and Lynn Goudie of Strathgowan 15-11, 15-11 in the other semifinal match. Mixed Doubles Upset

Boris Chiu of the St Catharines club thought "Malik should concentrate on playing mixed doubles. He's very good at it." In the other semifinal match, Priestman and Mrs. Heatherington finally won after a tough three-game match against second-seeded Eddy Watt and Miss Martin 15-12,13-18,18-15.

In the women's doubles, Lee Hesketh and Maureen Hanna of West Hill won a difficult final match against Sue Sibley and Catie Spencer of Brampton 13-18,15-10,15-12. The Toronto Open was the inspiration of two individuals— Jim Roszell and Audrey Graczyk. They took their idea and began to organize all aspects of the tournament— an enormous job in itself— but they did this in additional to their involvement is so many aspects of badminton from the District to the national level. Wanted: umpires and coaches

An umpires brush up and practical clinic was held at Strathgowan on November 1. Alta Macpherson (Strathgowan), Jean Woods (Strathgowan), Julia Seed (St Paul's), Francis Isshi (York University), Margaret Brogden (Agincourt) and Ethel Matsubayashi (Donway Junior) took part.

Why not become a certified umpire or coach? We are very short of active umpires in the District and may not be able to fill all the requests for umpires this season. Umpires are paid for their services, receive a meal allowance and mileage. In addition, T & D will refund the cost of the certification courses when an umpire becomes fully certified. We also need active coaches to help with the mini clinic program. The same policy applies to coaches as umpires. Juniors who are at least 16 years of age are welcome to participate. For the second year this unique, one-day doubles tournament attracted 120 young badminton enthusiasts from badminton clubs and the school system to compete at the Erindale Secondary School, Mississauga. Club president, Bill Mah, and tournament chairman, Bill Clarke, of the Erindale Junior Badminton Club expressed satisfaction with the day's competition that was run off in just under nine hours on the club's nine courts. They both felt that the tournament was accomplishing its purpose in involving young players at an intermediate level of competition and if it continued to grow a second school would be arranged for next year, giving a total of 17 courts. Winners in three age groups, as well as runners up and consolation winners, were presented with trophies in doubles and mixed doubles at the conclusion of play.

West 3-way winner at junior tournament

Bradford hosts second league play The'second league play of the season^ was held at the Bradford High School "In the Carrot Belt", on Saturday, December 5th. There were 56 players attending, representing 8 different clubs. Frank Berdan of Midland made his first appearance at a G.B. function since returning to the area and won the "A" mixed playing with Cathy Payne. Drummond McKerrow and Corrine McDonald of Orillia drove down just for the mixed. It was nice to see someone from Orillia for a change. Mattie Boudreau of Borden was a good sport and came even though she had lost both her partners due to illness. In women's doubles, the other girls took turns playing so Mattie had 3 different partners and in mixed doubles she teamed up with Dale Grummett of Alliston. Bradford Club had gone to a lot of trouble to host the league play and it would have been nice to see more clubs represented*. Joe and John January, 1982

Geoffrey West of the Parry Sound BC was a three way winner at the "Under 14" Junior Tournament held Saturday, December 12 at the Parry Sound High School. It may have helped Geoff a little to be playing on his home courts, but he really didn't need much help. Chris Borsa of St. Theresa's made Geoff work for his singles title and it was an exciting three-game , match. Geoff and Wally Gognavec had no trouble in the boys doubles and Geoff and Marnie Clark won the mixed title easily. Marnie Clark had her chance for a three-way title spoiled by her own ladies doubles partner, Karen Hedly of Utterson. Karen defeated Marnie in singles in a very close match, 12-9 and 12-11. There was a large entry in the tournament and it took from 9:30 a.m. till 5:30 p.m. to play off all the divisions. Peter Maule of Parry Sound was the tournament chairman and Terry Mason was umpire. Congratulations to all the juniors who took part in the tournament.

A local ladies group ran the snack bar and there is nothing fresher than a sandwich made right in front of you. The party was held in the Bradford fire hall social room with Christmas decorations everywhere. If you felt like snacking there were cheese trays. The only sad part of the evening was the disc jockey, but after a while everyone just closed their ears and danced to their own beat.

Participating in this event, from Toronto, were Janette Martin, Anne Yacyshyn, Mike deBelle and Mike Bitten. The event was well-attended and spectators participated playing against the pros. A mixed doubles match was

played, along with a men's singles match. The crowd was particularly impressed with the men's smashing ability. It was an excellent performance and many spectators commented on their newfound appreciation for the sport. Personally, I feel that the demonstration was definitely a first step in establishing a new image in our district.

NWOBA Early Bird By Marion Chllds

The NWOBA held its annual Early Bird Tournament at the Lakehead University Fieldhouse on November 21-22. It was well attended with entries from the Lakehead Club, the Great Lakers Club, Lakehead University, Confederation College, Red Rock, Terrace Bay, various high schools, and NWOBA's own fledging club which meets Sunday nights to provide interested players an extra evening of badminton with lots of court time. Most of the players are OBA members from other clubs. The tournament saw many fine matches particularly in mixed doubles, where our champions Steve Osawa and Jeannie MacKenzie, playing at Lakehead University, played 13 out of a possible 15 games before they won the finals. The singles champion, Louis Berube, defeated John Petrik in singles, but John got his revenge in doubles, when he and his partner Bernie Puchalski (both from Red Rock) won a three game marathon over Berube and Eric Latimer, who play with the Lakehead Club. We are glad to have Louis back again as he went off to the Yukon for a while. The women's events saw more entries than usual, which was nice. However there was not too much competition and Laurie Clara walked over all her opponents in singles and became a double winner when she and Linda Mahon defeated sisters

Jeannie and Kathy MacKenzie in another three game final. We were glad to see our friends from Terrace Bay, who came even though temporarily out of work due to the fire at the paper mill. It was also nice to see the juniors from Red Rock, particularly John Petrik Jr., who played here for the first time. Players from Kapuskasing and New Liskeard will be pleased to note Steve Osawa's progress and that of the MacKenzie sisters. Those from Sault Ste. Cobbing & Lessard: double winners inRACIub"B" By Joe Hager

The RA Badminton Club held its "B" tournament December 12-13 at the RA Centre on Riverside Drive in Ottawa. The two double winners in this tournament were Linda Cobbing and Robert Lessard. Cobbing won the women's singles over Jana Kriz, then teamed up with Nee Lee to obtain the mixed doubles crown after a close three-round match with Judy Latour and Matt Sagle. Lessard defeated Lee in the men's singles, and joined with Al Scrimgeour to capture the men's doubles championship over the team of Jim Dwyer and Paul Kriz. In women's doubles, Judy Latour and Katherine Palmer were victorious over Jackie Sharman and Janet Crabbe. We're looking forward to our Club "C" and "A" tournaments coming up in February and March of 1982 respectively, as well as the Canadian Seniors and Masters, to be held at the RA next April.

The Ottawa District Badminton Association held its "B" tournament December 4-6 at the Polyvalent Grande Riviere in Aylmer. This year's tournament proved again to be very popular, with 110 participants representing twelve of the district clubs. After a year's absence from the Ottawa tournament scene, Caroline Smallman emerged as one of our double winners. In a rather small women's singles draw, Caroline outlasted her arch-rival Mehrun Ahbhai 11-5, 11-5 in the finals, after beating Linda Cobbing in the semis. Caroline then combined with last year's women's doubles winner, Pauline McNally, to defeat unseeded finalists Maureen Mahougney and Rose Jones 15-5, 15-3. Caroline and Paulne withstood a strong performance by Judy Latour and Kathryn Palmer in the semis. In men's action, Murray Thorpe, a long-time district member, recently returning from a stay in Edmonton, dominated both events. In singles action, Murray wrestled the crown away from last year's winner Chris Williams in a hard-fought three games 7-15, 15-12, 15-7, after having defeated Dave Maxwell in the semis. In men's doubles, Murray teamed with Jim Taylor and they prevailed 15-10, 15-10 in the finals over Pat Welch and Cyril Hayde. The men's doubles was hotly contested, with both semi-finals going three games. Thorpe and Taylor defeated Williams and Wong, while Hayde and Welch defeated Maxwell and Male. Mixed doubles action saw the fifth and sixth seeded teams reaching the finals, ifter having defeated the third and fourth seeds in the quarter-finals, and the first and second seeds in the semis. sweep by Murray Thorpe, by winning the finals over Thorpe and Fran Berry 15-4,15-10. Consolation winners were Gerald Dionne and Jana Kriz in singles, Ron Simkover and Normand Girouard in men's doubles, Sarah Jackson and Linda Herman from Messena, N.Y. in women's doubles, and Gary Hubert and Lynn Elliot in mixed doubles. The Colonel By Junior was held for the first time at Ottawa's RA Centre on the weekend of November 6-8. In the UNDER 14 category, Ned Johnson was a triple winner, being successful in the singles, doubles (with Steve Christie) and mixed doubles (with Tracey McGowan) events. Christie came in second to Johnson in the singles and mixed (with Christine Dingwall). Dingwall, as well, won both the girls' singles and doubles (with Tracey McGowan, who was runner-up in the singles) events. UNDER 16: Brad Paul was a triple winner, taking the crown in the singles, doubles (with David Lyew) and mixed doubles (with Susan Neziolâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; runner-up in the girls' doubles) events. Robert Deimer and Dave Wiskel (thinking that they were finished) had already showered and they were called back on court for the playoff—sorry guys!! Doubles was next, starting early the next day. Vernnon Moriarity and Tim Sayer were undefeated in the A round robin with the quasidoubles team of Kent James and Cheryl Beach coming second. Tom Osawa and Martial Beauvais won the B division over David and Peter Fong; C group went to Richard Burrough & Gaetan Desbiens and D to Tracy Charrette & Corrine Davidson. Play in all groups was very close with many excellent matches. Particularly enjoyable was the aggressive play of Yeates and Tielmans of New Liskeard who pleased crowds all weekend. The second night was devoted to an A-B-C-D singles tournament with everyone in the draw. To confuse anybody who had hoped to use the results of the weekend for ranking, Tim Sayer was upset by the stunning acrobatics of Marc Tailleur. Refusing to let anything hit the floor and taking full advantage of the net cord, Marc gave the spectators what was probably the most interesting match of the weekend. On the other side, Tom Osawa advanced over Brian Amsden to meet Richard Burrough. Richard played very steadily to become the second singles champ of the weekend. NOBA junior. The mixed worked out rather unusually due to a lack of girls. To allow everyone to play, two coaches were enlisted to play with two of the younger boys, with a couple of other doubles match-ups being allowed. So, in true "Northern" style, the series mixed final saw Marc Tailleur and Alain Ouellette win over Kent

James and Gaetan Desbiens. After mixed, there were free challenges for those who could still walk, and play wrapped up around five o'clock. In general, the weekend was a fantastic success. Each player played a minimum of 18 matches with many going over 25, including playoffs and challenges. The level of play and effort put forth by the participants speaks very promisingly for junior badminton in the district in the near future. It is hoped that the series will become the second major event for juniors in the district and that the good feeling and friendship among players from across this huge district will continue to grow. There are a number of thank-yous owing after three days with over thirty juniors out of town. Heartfelt thanks from the coaches to the staff at the Breault's Motel for their tremendous kindness on Friday afternoon. The motel pool was the scene of a Kap vs Timmins water-polo game that was a great warm-up for the weekend. Anyone who wasn't half-drowned at the end of an hour, was declared a winner! Thanks to Bev Green, Frank Boulanger and Jim Muchmore for the work in conceiving the weekend and to Bev and her tremendous organizational talents for keeping things moving along. Finally, all the players and coaches would like to thank ,Tom Buck for all the hours of preparation and thought that had to go into such a tremendous weekend. Kaptim Team tourney By Bev Green

A team tournament was held in Kapuskasing on December 12 & 13,1981. The eight teams were made up of two players from Timmins and two from Kapuskasing; they played a complete round robin. Play was close through the two days of competition with two teams being tied for first place with six team wins each and all other teams close behind. Winning matches were then tallied with the result that the "Drops & Clears" team of Gale Cawthorpe, Marc Tailleur, Frank Boulanger, and Corrine Davidson narrowly edged out the "Big Birds".

Members of this second place team were Kent James, Robert Belair, Linda Leblanc and Joanne Lodin. Third place went to the "Racqueteers" team comprising Pierre Pauze, Walt Reimer, Mona Fortin and Sherri Knauz. The tournament was organized by Bev Green, Kapuskasing coach, to provide intensive competition for the juniors from the two training centres in Kapuskasing and Timmins. Each participant played fourteen matches in the two-day competition, many of them going three games. This meant a total of 140 matches overall. A special thanks to Mrs. Pauze who served pizza to most of the competitors on the Saturday evening.

Once again this year a Hamilton and District League is under way. This year there are four divisions as compared to the last few years with B and C Levels only. There are twenty teams this year submitted from Hamilton and the surrounding area. At each league game, three men and three women play for each given team. Each player receives two Doubles and one Mixed Doubles match. This provides a more competitive level of play for those interested in badminton in more than a recreational way. Western Ontario "A" and "B" championships will be held at Woodstock January 22-24, 1982. Feather Birds will be used. Everyone is welcome to enter but entries will be resticted in number; the qualifying criteria will depend on the number of entries received. Any restrictions placed on entry will be at the discretion of the WOBA Tournament Committee. WESTERN ONTARIO 'C' CHAMPIONSHIPS

Our WOBA executive would like to thank the Cambridge Club for agreeing to host this Tournament at Conestoga College, Doon - February 5-7. Plastic Birds will be used. K. W. Granite Club will be rolling out the red carpet on the 30th and 31st of January when they host The Thomas Cup (final of the Pan American Zone). A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE THOMAS CUP

In 1939 Sir George Thomas, President of the International Badminton Federation (I.B.F.), offered a Challenge Trophy for an international Men's Badminton Team Championship. The first THOMAS CUP took place betwen 10 nations in 1948 and 1949. At present, teams are divided into 4 zones - Pan American, Asian, Australian and European. Teams are made up of 3 singles players and 2 doubles pairs. Every three years, preliminary rounds are played and the four zone winners and Champions of the preceding Thomas Cup contest meet. CANADA has received a bye into the Final of the Pan American'zone and will play either JAPAN or PERU on the 30th and 31st of January. PLAN TO BE T H E R E

If you are looking for some lighter moments at your next tournament there is a mixed doubles pair that can do just that. At a tournament last spring they were definitely a comedy of errors. Firstly, during an ardent rally the man threw his raquet right to the ceiling. Secondly, he managed to step right out of his shoe and kick it two courts away without the laces even coming undone. Of course the lady did not miss her turn. She ended up after a long rally with the bird going down the front of her badminton dress and the only consolation being the shuttle did not fall right through. Naturally, everyone was watching them at the precise moments these events occurred and found all their tensions released through their hysterical laughter. For a nominal fee this couple might perform at your upcoming tournament. Inquire, and we will negotiate!

; LESTER B. PEARSON BADMINTON CLUB Once again here is your badminton reporter to inform you of the many events and activities taking place at a local club. Firstly, let me tell you a little about the situtation surrounding Lester B. Pearson Badminton Club. At the centre there is a high school, nursery school and recreational facilities. The gymnasium is one of the brightest places I have ever seen. The colours are pleasing to the eye and the atmosphere vast and cheery. Unfortunately the nine courts are so marked that the members have to adjust to the many coloured lines that we school gym players seem to accept. The club opened its fall season in September and now boasts a membership of one hundred and four. They have court time Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons with their larger turnout being on Tuesdays. The members use a chalkboard to sign up with 20 minute intervals allowed. After a rather long talk with the president of the club, I can only surmise that this is a very active club and executive. Lester B. has already had three mini-clinics. One for beginners, one for intermediates and an Umpire and Referee Level 1 clinic. They also have two other clinics planned for the new year. A r o u n d - r o b i n mixed Doubles tournament was recently held with a draw of about 35 pairs. Each player was ranked according to club January, 1982

play and the more experienced were put with the beginners. They hold this tournament every year and find it a great way to mix members and make for some excellent matches as well. Small plaques were presented to the winners at their Christmas party. This brings us to their social calendar. A Christmas party was held at the community centre. After a couple of hours of badminiton, everyone gathered in a nearby room for food and refreshments. A few skits were presented and some sponsored prizes given out to a lot or menioers. In the spring at the season's close, a pool party is held at an executive member's home, Frank Farrow. A small charge is levied to have this party catered and between this, swimming and dancing, a good time is had bv alL Lester B. has been extremely successful in league play in the past few years and considering they are but five years young, this is quite an achievement. This year they have entered two teams into the Hamilton District. One team is in Division 2 and the other in Division 3. Once again I'm sure they will provide excellent competition and exciting matches. George Quinn is a busy coach at Lester B. and this year a Junior club has been started. They play Saturdays, both mornings and afternoons with the Juniors divided into age groups and coached in these categories. The response has been terrific with as many as sixty young participants signing up. The club executive consists of Lyn Rayner as president, Frank Farrow as vicepresident and four subcommittee members: Denise Hughes, Bruce Applegarth, Adrian Winslow and Luke Groinsky. These people meet four times a year to discuss activities and upcoming events. Since the club is in a community centre, the committee members report to the area residents regularly to keep them posted on their progress. Lyn feels that using some of the talents on hand at the centre is a good idea since it keeps

communication lines open_and co-operation easy. A photographer from the school is brought in to take pictures of the members and the league teams and the art students are now in the process of creating a logo for their club. A couple of weeks ago, the hard working executive and a few regular volunteers had a well deserved break from it all. Lyn had won a weekend for twelve at Tyrolean Village in Collingwood so she stretched the reservation, packed up her friends and their spouses and headed away for a couple of days of fun and games. They had a very organized weekend of charades, musical

entertainment, eucnre, poKer and a highly f a v o u r e d treasure hunt which took them to the streets of Collingwood looking for various and sundry items. They even had their meals and chores down to team work and the entire weekend ran smoothly and with a great deal of fun for all. Now there is an executive that gets along! This could increase the list of dedicated volunteers immensely. Lester B. Pearson is making terrific headway in badminton, both at the recreational level and competitive level. With active and hard working members like that, it is no wonder! Good luck all!

Resource Materials Over the past few years the DBA has printed annually a resource materials pamphlet, which has grown into a booklet with over 80 items of interest to badminton enthusiasts. We have reached a point where the booklet's content has stabilized with a small number of additions or changes to be made each year. Starting this season, an update will be printed every other year to be used as a supplement to the booklet, containing a full listing of material available for purchase through our Resource Centre. This update outlines new additions to our Resource Centre as well as changes, deletions, etc., to the present stock. It also includes an updated order form which we request that you use for orders made during the 1981-82 season. Game nan News: 12 players have been invited to join the National Team program, in addition to the 13 receiving federal government funding. Five are from Ontario: Mike Bitten, Mike deBelle, Ian Garland, Tom Hunter and Craig McDougall. Players accepting the invitation will be required to participate in the organized physical training and testing program and will receive coaching from the GamePlan coach whenever opportunity arises.

Ontario begins training for Canada Winter Games by Pat Rowe

Although the next Canada Winter Games are still over a year away, the OBA Player Development Committee is wasting no time in getting a program underway to produce a winning team at Saguenay-Lac St. Jean, Quebec. Ontario's Canada Winter Games Badminton Team is in good hands under the expertise of Jamie McKee who was appointed coach last month by the OBA Jamie brings his many years of successful playing experience to this position, and he is no doubt planning to impart his skill and knowledge to an eager squad of young players. Named team manager is high school physical education teacher and coach Patricia Rowe who is on staff at South Huron District High School in Exeter, (where?) At a brief meeting in December, Anne Yacyshyn, Dave Burrows, Jamie and Pat discussed the "plan of attack." Jamie said his two objectives as coach are: 1. to raise the skill level of all the participants 2. to win the gold medal at the 1983 Canada Games. With these objectives in mind, the first practice session was held at the Woodstock Badminton Club on January 2nd and 3rd. No tune for New Year's Parties! OBfl Technical Director 1982 Ontario Junior Team Championships The Ontario Badminton Association in conjunction with Carlton as the official shuttle supplier, has invited all Ontario schools and colleges to enter the 1982 Ontario Junior Team Championships. Teams will be competing to represent their District in the Ontario Championships, where the top under 16 and under 19 team from each District will come together on a weekend in April to decide the winners. District play-downs will begin in early February. All players on each team must attend the same school, except in the case where boys' schools and girls' schools are permitted to enter combined teams. If your school wishes to enter a team or teams in this competition, please contact your District Convenor before February 1. The entry fee for this competition is $10.00 per team to a maximum of $30.00 for example, for 3 or more teams. Schools entering this event will be added to the mailing list for regular copies of "Ontario Badminton" as well as resource and promotional material. On receipt of all entry forms, the District Convenor will make a draw and contact you immediately regarding the location and date of competition, results sheets, shuttles, etc. One tube (6) of Carlton International nylon shuttles will be provided free of charge by Carlton for each play-down match. Match Play— In each division, competition will be based on best-offive match series to consist of 1 boys singles, 1 girls singles, 1 boys doubles, 1 girls doubles and 1 mixed doubles event. Teams consist of 4-8 players. Each player is allowed to compete in a maximum of 2 events. One of Canada's top woman player's, 24-year-old Wendy Carter of Calgary, won US$1, 400 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, placing fourth in the women's singles in the Alba World Cup badminton championships Sunday, October 11. Indonesian Ivanna Lie defeated Wendy by scores of 11-0,11-8 and received US$1,600 for placing third. Both lost their semi-final matches to China's 17-year-old Li Lingwei and Chen Ruizhen. Lingwei demolished Wendy 11-3 and 11-6 in 27 minutes, while Ruizhen blasted Ivanna 11-5,11-5 in only 21 minutes. Godfrey Robert, sports editor of The Straits Times, wrote that the Chinese players "stretched the disparity in women's standards between China and the rest of the world with swift, decisive victories in their semi-final matches." Robert observed that the Chinese "won" their matches even before they started. Wendy appeared to have given up the match even before she showed up at Stadium Negara for her semi-final confrontation with the Beijing high school student. "Wendy, who has always been a slow starter, was never allowed to settle down as Lingwei raced to a 9-2 lead in eight minutes, " Robert wrote. The Chinese won the first game in 12 minutes. Lingwei led 7-3, then 10-3, in the second game before Wendy showed some mettle, but by then it was too late. Lingwei gave up three more points before winning the game in 15 minutes. Robert observed: "Lingwei's performance seemed to have affected Indonesia's Ivanna, who, even before she stepped on court for the meeting with the favorite Ruizhen, spoke of defeat." "I'm not ready yet," the 20-yearold Ivanna confessed as she watched the Han Jian-Hadiyanto semi-final match. Ruizhen led 5-2 and 9-5 before winning the first game against Ivanna in 12 minutes. She wrapped up the second game in nine minutes. Sports editor Robert speculated that the final between Ruizhen and LingJanuary, 1982

wei was too much of an arranged social affair. Robert expressed his suspicion that the Chinese finalists "probably agreed to share the total prize-money of US$7,500. How else could one interpret their meeting at the Stadium Negara when the two players turned the final into a 'social' match?" Ruizhen was the favorite, winning by scores of 12-10, 2-11 and 11-7. "But missing from the play by the pony-tailed 20-year-old Asian invitational champion," according to Robert, "were the sliced drops, wristy dabs and positive smashes that mesmerised her previous opponents." After the girls had won a game each, Ruizhen led 4-1, then 7-2 and 10-3, and the crowd were all geared up for the kill. But Ruizhen allowed Lingwei to plod along to the score of 7-10 until the impatient crowd began to jeer. At this point, Ruizhen finished Lingwei off with a decisive drop.

Prakash dethrones Chinese champion by Felipe Tauro

Commonwealth champion Prakash of India collected US$6,000 and a magnificent trophy from Malaysian Sports Minister Dato Mokhtar Hashim after he had demolished China's number one player, Han Jian, in the Alba World Cup badminton championships at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sunday October 11. Prakash was described by the sports editor of The Straits Times, Godfrey Robert, as a champion who, "like a maharishi in deep concentration, kept his cool and composure to stun Han Jian and the 8,000 crowd by winning the first set 15-0 in only nine minutes." The sports editor emphasized that in that first game Prakash led 7-0 within a minute and after two service changes made it 11-0. But the second game proved to be an epic display of nearly perfect badminton, after Prakash had led 7-3. Han Jian evened the score at 7-7 and then led at 9-7. As he had done earlier in the tournament, Prakash resorted to his delaying tactics and made it 11-9 with a

drifting drive that pushed the Chinese to the baseline and caught him off-balance with a superb cross:court smash. At this point, Han Jian, no longer confused by the seemingly flawless play by Prakash, evened the score to 11-11, then 12-12 and won service at 13-13. A deuce was called by Prakash. Then the Indian champion led 15-14, 16-15, and then 17-15, after a 22-stroke rally that ended the suspense with the Chinese grazing the net while attempting a back-hand flick. "Victory stared at Prakash," reported Robert, "but the Chinese player continued his gallant fight to make it 16-17, until his reckless return at the net." The final match took 41 minutes to playChen Changjie of China collected US$2,400 by placing third. He defeated Hadiyanto of Indonesia 15-12 and 15-10, putting him on fourth place. Hadiyanto collected US$2,100. Changjie won the men's singles title at World Games 1 at San Jose, California, last July by defeating Prakash in the semifinal 18-16 and 18-14.
