* While we don't see badminton extravaganzas here in Ontario, there are very high-profile events held throughout the world from time to time. Events that a hard-core badminton fan finds it well worthwhile to plan a vacation around. One such event is the 1982 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Brisbane, Australia next summer. It seems as though anyone who attended the 1978 festivities in Edmonton wants to take in the Brisbane Games. For those who want to plan a little further ahead, and who prefer Europe to 'down-under', the 3rd World Badminton Championships will be held in Denmark in May, 1983. This is sure to be a first class show and will be the first Worlds in which China has participated. Piper Travel, who do all OBA's travel planning, are putting together a package tour to include travel, accommodation, tickets etc. Why not set aside a few dollars a week for the next 18 months and give yourself a real treat? * Computers are everywhere these days, as are computer buffs. Many have expressed interest in applying their talents to badminton but aren't quite sure how to go about it. Where could computers best be used? To rankings, making draws, organizing round robins? And what other useful possibilities are there? If you're keen in this area, drop us a note here at Ontario Badminton. We can at least share your ideas and-or questions through a Computer Corner in the paper, and it may be possible to develop a workshop session to get you all together. * A birthday celebrated last month was made special by an early morning visit from Bev to officially bestow on me my NOBA Seniors Club membership card. Bev started the idea of the Seniors cards several years ago and their value has proved to be long-lasting. Now, each September, players who will be turning 35 or 40 during the new season are filled with keen anticipation rather than groans as the doors to the rapidly expanding Ontario Seniors Circuit open before them. Chalk up another plus for badminton! * Hope you like our new-look newsmagazine format. We'd enjoy receiving your comments on both the change and the new OBA logo. _.

China vs Ontario: exhibition games in Toronto

I've never enjoyed anything so much in all my life! "I never enjoyed anything so much in all my life!" Such was the way Janette Martin summed up her reaction after playing in a mixed ChinaOntario women's doubles match at the Etobicoke Olympium in Toronto on Monday, November 2. Janette's partner for the match was Canadian Open' champion Sang Yanqin of China. They played against Sue Heatherington of Toronto and Deng Sian of China, runner-up at the Canadian Open in Quebec City two days earlier.

It is the speed and grace of movement that makes them so captivating to watch. Toronto coach Russ Evans was particularly impressed with the forward motion of Sang Yanqin, the doubles player who emerged as singles champion at the Canadian Open although unseeded. "Her forecourt movement will win it for her", he predicted as her exhibition match with Deng Sian progressed. As the match wore on, Sang Yanqin tired visibly but as Russ commented, "Her movement is so good it makes up for everything." Deng Sian is a beautiful,

willowy young woman with real porcelain-doll features. John Gilbert, in his color commentary for CBC's Sportsweekend, noted that she seemed to become a victim of her own nerves — a situation that we have never seen in an eastern player before. In men's action at the exhibition, Canadian champion Pat Tryon played Tien Bingyu while two Ontario doubles teams played against Yang Kesen and Tien Bingyu. First up in doubles were our two Mikes, Bitten and deBelle, who are both 19 years old and working fulltime at badminton this year. They had played the Chinese in Quebec City the week before and said they had no success at all in getting the bird into play. This time, however, they handled the difficult Chinese serves much better and had some good, entertaining rallies. It was their first international appearance for Canada. Cultural differences were very apparent, as most observers would not have guessed that the team from China were the younger of the two pairs on the court. By our standards, their poise and maturity at 18 years of age are remarkable. The doubles style

Feature match of the evening saw Jamie McKee, now 30, and Raphi Kanchanaraphi, 44, take the court. After losing the first game 15-7, Jamie and Raphi speeded up the pace in the second and looked very much in control at 5-1. Then, however, the Chinese changed gears almost imperceptibly until their pace was sufficiently faster to put the difference between the two teams the same as in the first game. The result: 15-7 again. Most of those who came to Jjhe Olympium were club plays and the informal atmost/nere of the exhibition combined with the camaraderie among the players and their evident enjoyment of the November/December, 1981

During their short stay — about 48 hours — in Toronto, the visitors from China were taken on a tour of Niagara Falls by Grace Lin and Sue Heatherington, enjoyed a festive evening in Chinatown as guests of Raphi Kanchanaraphi, and toured downtown Toronto's shopping district. Thanks are extended to members of the organizing committee: Cathy Clarke, Lynn Goudie and Paul Senteal, and to Peter Jenson, MC for the evening. Final results: 1. Tien Bingyu d. Pat Tryon 15-9 2. Sang Yanqin & Janette Martin split with Deng Sian & Sue Heatherington 15-9,12-15 3. Vang Kesen & Tien Bingyu d. Mike Bitten & Mike deBelle 15-6,15-5 4. Sang Yanqin d. Deng Sian 11-8,11-5 5. Sang Yanqin, 19, is the 1980 national women's doubles champion of China and 1981 women's singles champion of the Canadian Open. Her ready smile, such as on this occasion after she had lost the shuttle in the lights and therefore missed her shot, showed her great joy in playing badminton and made her a delight to watch.

In the front row are Ian Arthur, Cathy Clarke, Sara Stroud and Tom Muir. Ross is completing a law degree at the University of Windsor this year and sent this photo along at the request of Bev Green, chairman of the 1982 Ontario Under 19 Championships. Bev plans to publish a program for the tournament featuring photos of former under 19 champions, just one of the many touches of northern hospitality that will greet players travelling to Kapuskasing for the event.

Mike & Mike train for Thomas Cup Mike Bitten of Bordon and Mike deBelle of Oakville have taken up residence at the Strathgowan Club this year to train for a spot on the 1982 Canadian Thomas Cup team that will face Japan in Kitchener at the end of the month. After graduating from Grade 13 in June, Mike and Mike chose to devote this year entirely to badminton rather than registering for university. They hope to continue improving on the form that won them the Canadian under 19 doubles title in 1980 and 1981, and earned them a win over Jamie IcKee and Raphi Kanchanaraphi at the 1980 Boulevard Invitational. Best of luck! (Thanks to the 'Toronto Open' program for this information.)

Fall o on Sue Meetings

Who are they really??

The annual OBA fall meetings were held in Toronto at the Valhalla Inn on Sept 25-27. Over 50 delegates from clubs throughout the province were in attendance. Highlight of the weekend was the adoption ol a new OBA logo, and many other program details were discussed. Representatives were guests of the Ottawa District association at a Friday night reception, and of the Toronto & District association for friendly matches on Saturday evening. It's worth repeating that the value of our semi-annual meetings arises as much from the after-hours fellowship among reps as from the formal sessions. Much of the present activity at the club and district level in Ontario springs directly or indirectly from people getting acquainted with others from different regions. Because they have come to know and respect each other well, debate among these elected representatives in the meeting sessions is free-wheeling, cooperative and constructive. Why not consider volunteering for your district executive next spring and become part of this dynamic group?

Sudbury

After attending several OBA meetings in Toronto and seeing some of the same people in action more than once, I know they are not who they say they are. All these people who sit around and make brilliant comments, tell funny jokes, have innovative ideas, balance the budget, are not just ordinary people. In September I watched some of them very closely and I slowly caught on to quite a few of them. Now I will tell you who they really are: * Debbie Swire from Burlington is Helen Hutchinson from W-5. * Dave Burrows really is Superman. He lives in a phone booth in Burlington with Lois Lane. * Arlene Crozier is Rona Barrett's sister. * John Russell and Linda Murphy from Ottawa are really Joe Clarke and Flora MacDonald.

Under 14 Whitby Under 16 Brantford Under 19 Kapuskasing "B" Trenton Seniors & Masters Stratford "C" St Catharines "A" Oshawa <Bg Sfieife Sfutttfe

* Ian Bishop, when back in Ottawa either becomes the Incredible Hulk or is Alan Baird's clone. One more meeting and I'll be able to tell for sure. * Rusty Bassarab is John Travolta. * John Patterson is either Tom Jones the singer or David Crombie MPP. * Diana Chiasson & Janet Wotten are Laverne & Shirley. * Ernie & Vicki Nock are really Mel and Marilyn Lastman. * Bruce McDougall is Frank Miller, Treasurer of Ontario. * Rosemary Moore and Bev Green are Batman and Robin. At the meeting next May I ____,^ be able to figure out who the rest of the people are. "You can fool some of the people, some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." ii Ontario Badminton

Normal financial support is 50% of travel and accommodation costs, but this has been increased to 75% where distances of over 400 kilometers are involved. This will apply to almost everyone involved in the Under 19 Championships in Kapuskasing, although there is no truth to the rumor that absolutely nobody lives within 400 kilometers of the Model Town of the North! Players should apply now for their Wintario travel grants, if they haven't done so already. Details on how to go about this are available from the OBA office or from district secretaries.

Changes for Intermediates The newest group to discover the great camaraderie of age-group competition is the Under-23 crowd, many of whom are university and college students. The popularity of Under 23 events is definitely on an upswing, as graduates of junior ranks and late-starters alike seek to maintain contact with old friends and make new acquaintances. Three significant changes should give much broader appeal to the Ontario Intermediate this year: 1. it is now a bona fide Under 23 event; the bottom age restriction has been removed; 2. play will be with nylon shuttles, as used in all college and university competition; 3. the only entry restriction is by age; all under-23 players are welcome. Host for the 1982 Ontario Intermediate is Mark Tremblay, a 2nd year student at Laurentian University in Sudbury. The tournament will be played at Cambrian College, Ontario's newest—and one of its finest—badminton facilities. Plan now to attend!

Wine and Cheese Handicap Tournament The time: 7 pm. The date: Friday, October 9, 1981. The place: RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa. The event: The RA Badminton Club's Opening Wine and Cheese Handicap Tournament. The outcome: A madcap evening of anythingbut-serious play on the courts, intermingled with sampling of various wines and cheeses in the RA's Racquets Lounge. This has been traditionally how we have opened our fall season. It's an excellent way for new members to get into the spirit of things and for returning members to get back into the swing of things. Stronger players are teamed up with those not as strong to produce rather unusual but fairly balanced matches. This year's champions of the night were Dave Kierans and Antoine Boisson, who managed to defeat Joe Hager and Sue Stunder. Both teams are as much to be congratulated for their tenacity and perseverance as for their playing skills. Less fit and less keen players just might have missed a few shots on court in an effort to get an earlier shot at the awaiting goodies upstairs in the lounge! (Continued on page 16)

Quebec City Social Tournament It was the long-awaited day: Friday, October 16, 1981. The noon-day sun was beaming cheerfully over the eager group of badminton players who clamoured aboard two mini-buses in front of Ottawa's RA Centre. Off we shot in an easterly direction. Before long, we were chattering enthusiastically, singing (Unprofessionally), munching on doughnuts and sipping assorted beverages. As the late afternoon sun filtered through lacey trees in the heart of Quebec City, we found ourselves rolling down interesting streets lined with gracious homes. And all at once, we were there. As quickly as 20 people struggling in French could, we checked into that city's version of the "Chateau Laurier" Hotel, conveniently back-to-back with the club where we were to play. Then we raced over to the club to meet the male and female partners who had been selected to complement our respective skills (or lack of same). We were enchanted by the clubhouse itself: a cosy stone structure, with elegant canopy at the front entrance, looking somewhat like a miniature castle. Inside, we found certain similarities with the RA (though on a smaller scale): 6 dedicated badminton courts, a set of curling rinks, squash courts, swimming facilities, locker rooms, a lounge and a number of banquet rooms. After working up an appetite with a few fun games of badminton, we were treated to a welcome buffet supper. We next proceeded to practice our drinking and dancing skills till thoughts of tomor-

row s games iinaiiy torcea us , relucUpcoming Events at the R.A. tantly, to pack it in for the night. Last year, we had 750 members in Awakening to the sound of military the club. These included daytime memcadets carrying out their Saturday mornbers (who can play during weekdays ing drill in the square adjacent to the hotel, we had a bite of breakfast and only), junior members (who can play on dashed over to the club for a full day of two afternoons and two morning a week), play. This season, T&D has initiated a program wherein any super-senior (60 & over)—regardless of club affiliation—is granted a free membership in the association. It is our hope that as many senior citizens as possible will identify themselves to us so that we can look at introducing a special senior citizens' program. One idea we have in mind is to help set up inter-club play for seniors. Another aspect of the program would be a special seniors handicap tournament. Other suggestions would be most welcome.

T&D Fall Meeting The regular fall meeting was held on October 21. Player Development: The highlight of Jim Roszell's report was the detailed plans for the 1st Toronto Open to be held on December 11-13. The tournament program was hot off the press and available for distribution to those few clubs represented. The program featured the introduction of the new OBA logo to the district and it was favorably received by the representatives. Jim reiterated his request for any informtion on the history of the association. The classification list, mailed to all clubs previously, is still current. Leagues: Cynthia Kane reported that league play will begin the week of November 9 and continue for 17 weeks.

There is room for additional teams in division III. Playoffs, complete with social evening, will be held at the end of the season to determine the district champions in each division. Coaches & Umpires: The representatives approved new programs in this area. First, in order to encourage more active involvement in T&D from people taking OBA clinics, the district will refund the cost of those clinics to members at the time they become fully certified. Second, there are a handful of coaches and umpires who actively support T&D activities and it was agreed that they be recognized for their participation. Junior Development: Julia Seed from St. Paul's BC has agreed to take over the junior program. Sue Vella outlined her plans for a series of junior clinics. John Paterson

!V

Treasury: Last season's financial statements were approved. The new format that John Paterson used—traditional statements plus segmented statements—makes it very clear> how T&D funds are being used. A budget has been prepared for this season and John highlighted aspects of it. The proposed new criteria for Wintario funding was approved. Representatives were reminded that T&D's books are open to them; anyone wishing to examine the books should contact John. OBA Meetings: This report gave a further explanation of the marketing study and development of the OBA logo. The new arrangement for the OBA and CBA papers are also outlined. Of most concern to T&D is the impending sale of Strathgowan. The district will continue to support the club as long as it remains active and will help to relocate any member when it becomes necessary.

The Constitution: John Paterson and Marg Collins have begun from scratch to develop a constitution unique to T&D. Their initial notes are completed and John will begin work on a first draft that should be ready for the spring meeting. It was agreed that a special Constitutional meeting be called when approval is sought. All clubs will receive copies for study in advance of that meeting. General: All T&D executive meetings are open to any club wishing to attend. Any interested person should contact the secretary to find out the next scheduled date.

Junior Clinics Once again, Sue Vella has organized a series of junior clinics for the coming season. These will be held once a month at Forest Hill Collegiate. This year, clubs will be asked to register those junior players who will be participating but there will be no cost involved. John Muller has agreed to coach the entire series of clinics. For further information, contact Sue Vella at 249-6862.

Letter to Chris Buratynski Dear Chris, As we have been unable to locate your new address, this is the only way we could contact you. The T&D executive were very grateful at our annual meeting last spring when you volunteered to serve as junior chairman. With your enthusiasm and fresh ideas, we were looking forward to a more comprehensive junior program in T&D. Your input at our executive meetings was also appreciated. We wish you well in your new venture in Kingston; you will be missed in T&D! Yours truly, The T&D Executive

Brampton Club members Peter Kuenzle, Graham Eley, Bill Maynard, Pete Tiller, Len Trumble. The Brampton BC held a round-robin evening on Oct 29, with 56 players participating. Ed Whiteside, Marie Cardno and Ian Shales drew up the games, giving all players at least 5 games on the 9 available courts. Play was in three sections, with the finalists in each section winning Wintario tickets. After the play, we adjourned to the Brampton Civic Centre for a wine & cheese party; music was supplied by Lance Heydon and Peter Tiller. Brampton is a large club with a blend of some players

who enjoy tournament, and league competition and others who prefer just regular club play. The club was represented at the K-W Granite Oktoberfest tourney and 17 members travelled to the Barrie B-C. There are 8 teams playing in the inter-church league. Regular play nights are Tuesday and Thursday, with Saturday a.m. play for juniors and p.m. for adults. Club fees are $40 per member since gym rental costs are high. From 9-12 on Saturdays, Bill Maynard leads the coaching staff for the juniors with

Fifth Geo Bay B&C "Fun artri I firm*" They came from Ottawa; they came from London; and one player even flew in from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Just about everyone was in Borden for the 5th Annual Geo Bay B&C Tournament on November 6-8. Over 160 players converged on the Base for three days of fun and strong competition. The Mixed Doubles draw was the largest with over 60 teams entered. Tournament Chairman Arlene Crozier was pleased with the number entered and just wished somehow another 6 courts would appear. Georgian Bay Executive members, Bob Thomson, Dedi West, Larry Thompson, Dale Grummett and Terry Mason, worked hard all weekend running the draw desk, taking entry fees, selling birds and party tickets. Ex-President Steve Tasker, in for the tournament from Saskatoon, even took his turn working in the different areas. The Saturday night dinner and dance was held at the Sheba Shrine Club in Barrie with over 125 people eating, drinking, and dancing the night away. Each person received a name tag of a famous 24

Geo Bay Welcomes Geo College Three Cheers!! Another new club! ! Georgian College Badminton Team has joined the Georgian Bay Badminton Association and even took part in the first league play October 17. Gary Helmkay is the coach and hopes that by joining the District his players will get all the competition they can handle. Georgian College is just far enough away from the other community colleges that weekly travel is difficult and the Georgian players aren't getting any extra play. We hope to see them at the remaining league plays and the district tournament. Welcome Georgian College!!

person when they entered and for one special dance everyone had to find their famous mate. All you could hear were cries of "Margaret where are you" "Over here Pierre" "Ginger" "Yes Fred". Once the couples were all matched, some just did not look like they belonged to each other. During the evening many special awards were made. A gift was given to the two shriners who have run the bar for four years, Bill Marshall and Terry Harris. Awards went to Edite Maclsaac of Burlington for the first entry in with payment, to Steve Tasker for coming the farthest, and to Bill Verboom on behalf of the West Hill Club for having the largest number of people, (24), entered in the tournament.

League Play - Off and Running The first league play of the 1981-82 season was held Saturday October 17 at Innisdale Collegiate in Barrie. A total of 56 players representing 11 clubs were on the courts at 9:00 a.m. At least 10 people hadn't been to a League Play before and it was nice to see new faces. At least 40 players were under 19 so we are building for the future. The only sad part of the day was that the gym cost $310 and we only took in $225 on entry fees. Where will it all end? We used to say Badminton was a "cheap sport". Bruce Campbell drove up from Port Hope so he wouldn't let his two partners down, November/December, 1981

Jack Crossley and Carol Clothier. Jack and Bruce did very well in the "B" Men's doubles and Bruce even had a little steam left for mixed doubles. Jan Hobin and Ron Gatis from Owen Sound were a little mixed up and ended up at Borden instead of Barrie, but still arrived in time for their first game of mixed. The party was held at the Barrie Arena Lounge with Carol Clothier serving a cold buffet followed by dancing to a disc jockey. Birds Eye View Ken Priestman playfully dominates Niagara Early Bird By F. T. Zolayvar

Honed by the recent series tournament at Strathgowan, Ken Priestman of St. Catharines, formerly of Kitchener, playfully asserted dominance in the men's singles and doubles in the Niagara Falls early bird open tournament held Oct 30-Nov 1 at the Cataract City club. A fairly predictable tournament, only one major upset colored the competition. Junior player John Tauro of St Catharines defeated Ron Taylor of Kitchener-Waterloo Granite by scores of 15-12 and 15-11 in the first round. The diminutive dynamo of St Catharines exploded .cross-court smashes and drives that caught Taylor off guard. Taylor, who won the men's singles title the weekend before in the Kitchener invitational tournament for B players, graciously decided not to go into the consolation rounds. Priestman easily captured the men's singles crown by defeating Sajjad Malik of Brantford 15-5 and 15-6. In the semifinals, Laurence Yeung of St Catharines stretched his match again Malik, losing by scores of 13-15,154 and 15-11. Priestman bested Ed Watt of Strathgowan in the other semifinal match 15-5 and 15-7. In the women's singles, Janette Martin of Strathgowan claimed the championship in a round-robin competition in which she won all her matches. Janet Hugh', also of Strathgowan, captured second place, losing to Miss Martin in the finals. Priestman and Scott Paton of Niagara Falls copped the men's doubles title by defeating Len Dubecki of Brantford and Bal Takel of Toronto in two game with identical scores of 15-9. In the semifinals, Dubecki and Takel played a tough match again juniors Phil Tauro and Larry Yeung of St Catharines. Priestman and Paton defeated the Prevoe brothers of Toronto in the other semifinal match 15-8 and 154. Two quarterfinal matches stretched to three games each. Juniors Boris Chiu and John Tauro of St Catharines were downed by the strong Prevoe brothers 1W>, 4-15 and 15-10. Another three-game match was played by Phil Tauro and Larry Yeung against Don Dewey of Buffalo and Mark D'Anna of Niagara Falls, with Tauro and Yeung winning by scores of 12-15, 15-12 and 15-12. The round-robin format was followed in the women's doubles, with Ann Wist and Janet Hugh" winning the championship after four straight victories. Sonja D'Sa and Rose Prevoe placed second, losing to Miss Hugh' and Mrs Wist in the finals. The mixed doubles title was captured by Ed Watt and Janette Martin of Strathgowan. They defeated Bal Takel and Ann Wist. In the consolation rounds, Rick Felker won the men's singles, John Tauro and Boris Chiu captured the men's doubles, and Mark D'Anna and Janet Hugli claimed the mixed doubles. 26

U12, U14 tourney in Brantford By Edith Hayman

Allison Spaxman of the host club was the only triple winner at the All-Canadian Club Junior Inv in Brantford on Oct 30-Nov 1. Prizes for the U14s were the Yonex 'Green' racquets, runners-up earned Yonex bags. Medallions of gold, silver and bronze were given totheU12s. This was the first year for this event, which replaces the U14, U12 Niagara Falls circuit tournament. We had 46 entries and hope for many more next year, as the tournament's success becomes known. Some of these youngsters are already polished and experienced players. Many are coming back to the A.C.C. on Nov 27 to play in our U16, U14 Novice Tournament. Again, prizes will be racquets and bags. A novice is one who hasn't reached any semis in any circuit tournament; anyone entering a new age group this year is considered a novice. At the U14, U12 all matches were umpired by our U16s. This eased tension among the youngsters and all the game ran smoothly. Players from Toronto, Ajax, Barrie, Burlington, Parry Sound, Harwood, Hamilton, Paris, Mississauga and Brantford attended the tournament.

Another promising Brantford player, Cathi Mulrooney, lost her semifinal match to Chris Dingwall in a close second game. "Cathi is also in her first year. She should be superb next year," Phil Tauro of St. Catharines commented. Tracey McGowan of Oakville defaulted her semifinal match against Jackie Starr. In the boys' doubles, Ned and Stephen won an easy victory over Ian Foster of Toronto Granite and Dan Richter of Burlington. Oakville's powerhouse team stifl-

The girls' final match in doubles pitted Brantford against Oakville, with the latter gaining the upper hand. Chris Dingwall and Tracey McGowan claimed the championship by defeating Cathi Mulrooney and Jackie Starr of Brantford. The mixed doubles finals brought two Oakville pairs against each other, with Ned Johnson and Tracey McGowan besting Stephen Christie and Chris Dingwall in a gruelling three-game match.

The only unfortunate aspect was that the tournament was held the same day a&Sue Heatherington's (formerly Hill) wedding and we were missing many of our top players. The district would like to congratulate Sue and Brian and we hope that both of them will be out to our tournaments.

has put into the COB A; I know that we will miss her. For everyone's information, the new SecretaryTreasurer of the district is Debbie Simpson (soon to be Fisher). Welcome Debbie and we hope that this added responsibility won't take you away from your husband too much. I would like to finish by making an appeal to all members of the district to keep the members of the executive aware of your views and feelings. We have altered one or two things for this year and we still require feedback in order to evaluate them. The attendance at the Fall Meeting was not very good, and although some of the fault was mine due to the lack of sufficient notice and the weekend chosen, I hope that participation can be increased in the future. I look forward to seeing you all on the courts (and of course at the parties).

From the Pres: Welcome back everyone for another season. I'd like to start by bringing everyone lip to date with what has happened since last spring. There were numerous problems created by the mail strike, but in spite of the problems Wayne King and Garry Milroy conducted an excellent camp for juniors. As many of you already know, we held our first fall series ranking tournament this year in Belleville. I feel that it went very well and hope it will improve our ranking system in the future.

By Rusty Bassarab

Early in the fall we received some sad news for the district. Janet Wotten and her husband have been transferred out west so we have lost Janet from our executive. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Janet very much on behalf of the district for all the time and effort she

No results received yet from the COBA ranking tournament or the Doug Grant Inv. Watch our next issue for late news of these events.

badminton review The Canadian Open in a Nutshell The annual Canadian Open championships were held in Quebec City on October 27-31. Good coverage of three final matches was carried live by CBC's Sportsweekend on Saturday afternoon, with John Gilbert making his debut as a color commentator. His enthusiasm was infectious! Men's singles: top seeds Yang Kesen and Tien Bungyu of China lost in the semis to Nick Yates of England (9,4-15,12) and Thomas Kihlstrom of Sweden (8,18-14). Yates won the final with gallant comebacks in both games (17-16, 12). There were 18 Canadians in the draw of 32. Bob McDougall of Calgary reached the QF by defeating Ray Stevens of England (18-17, 3-15, 10) and Dan Travers of Scotland (10,14-17, 7). Pat Tryon also reached the QF after beating Jeff Goldsworthy of Kitchener, (4,18-13) and Mark Freitag of Calgary (9,12). The other quarter-finalists were Stephen Baddeley of England and Surapong Suharitdamrong of Thailand. Women's singles: top seed Gillian Gilks of England lost in the SF to Deng Sian of China (2,10-12,2). Jane Webster of England upset 2nd seed Wendy Carter of Calgary in the first round (4,5-11,3) then beat Denyse Julien of Rouyn (8,9) before losing in the SF to unseeded Sang Yanquin of China (2,6). Miss Seng—supposedly a doubles player—then won the final (7,4). There were 10 Canadians in the draw of 21. Sandra Skillings of Vancouver had a long match with Gilks (7,11-12,6); Johanne Falardeau of Quebec reached the QF by defeating Hiromi Tsukioka of Japan (8,5) and Alison Root of the USA (5,5); Claire Backhouse of Vancouver reached the QF by beating Chikako Sanda of Japan (5,5). The other quarter-finalist was Sally (Leadbeater) Podger of England. Men's doubles: Stefan Karlsson of Sweden injured his shoulder just prior to the tournament so Kihlstrom formed a scratch partnership with Ray Stevens. They easily won the event by beating Ross Clarke & Jeff Goldsworthy (8,13), Bob McDougall & Mark Freitag (11,4), Dan Travers & Billy Gilliland (2,3) and November/December, 1981
