THE NATIONAL GALLERY SINGAPORE’S ART CONNECTOR PROJECT
6
RETRACING THE MASTERS: CHORUS OF DIVERSITY The aim of this project is to engage the community to reflect on our local art and cultural heritage. The diverse communities from Singapore involved in this project will visually present their responses on the artworks from a selection of key Pioneer artists (Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, Chen Chong Swee, Georgette Chen and Liu Kang). The Art Connector (AC) will be divided into five key sections, each represented by one of the five artists. Unlike the current trend of many community projects that encourage creative self-expression, this project is tied to the collective consciousness of our local art history while allowing for individual expression. In short, participants from the community are encouraged to explore expressivity within the larger framework of our historical and cultural context. Furthermore, the Nanyang Style is the hallmark of Singapore’s artistic contribution to the world. Its fusion of the Eastern and Western Styles epitomises Singapore’s ability to be rooted to its heritage while keeping relevant with the ever-changing times. In relation to the community engagement goals of the Mobile Art Lab, this project aims to create and document a visual dialogue between Singaporeans and our art and cultural heritage. The project showcases the diverse views of Singaporeans in their reinterpretation of the masterpieces by looking back at our pioneer artists’ achievements and how they set the cornerstone for future development of the visual arts scene in Singapore. Ultimately, the diverse voices of the people will form a chorus that echoes their responses to the masters’ iconic works. We also aim for this section of community engagement to stand out from other creative community projects. In this instance, rather than being solely based on individual creativity, the works created will be tied to the community reflection and reinterpretation of artworks from local art history and its development here and in relation to the region, thus aligning the project with National Gallery Singapore’s vision.

Rubbies in the Rubbles
A Recycling Social Enterprise and Hawker center 2013
‘One man’s trash is another’s gem’, this architecture embodies that message in its programmatic functions and use of materials. Rubies in the rubles is a space created that aims to give a new life to used objects. Situated at the back lane of Pioneer mall and public housing, the design is inward looking. It is designed around a central public square that doubles as the sales area of the social enterprise, the blocks surround the square as a pinwheel, symbolic of recycling. Its dynamic roof form allows for more better light distribution within the spaces. Recycled beer bottles are used on as a façade to create a unique spatial experience. Wooden crates are reused as the partitions between the stalls and as seats for the hawker center. Surrounding spaces are landscaped into a scarp art sculpture park where the public can create learn and create their own art works with recycled materials.

Art-itecture
Where art, landscapes and architecture combines 2012
As nature lives grows and decay, the land art works are a manifestation of this transient nature. Where by art is not only a physical connection with nature as one work with it. The act of interaction with nature is also a psychological one. A way to connect deeply with nature Land art, such as those done Andy Goldsworthy, insipired me. , I wanted to create a space where by visitors of this exhibition would be invited to create land art and their works would be exhibited within the landscape. This process of creating land art is a way of learning about nature. Using art the basis of my concept also affected my choice of site. I have chosen to build on the existing water tanks found in Dairy Farm. Monolithic and monumental, its strong sculptural form reinforces the concept of exhibiting art within nature. Through time, the water tanks have gone through the process of decay and this parallels nature cycle of life and decay. In this sense, the building itself forms a parallel to the exhibits that it would host, reinforcing then notion of landscape as art as both land art and the building would both be viewed as works of art

Heuristic Learning at Cashin House An architecture museum to learn about structures 2013
Situated at Lim Chu Cang, we were tasked to create a learning space for 12 year olds about learn about structures using the existing Cashin House. Through exposing and creating new interventions, the user can now experience a heuristic learning journey by venturing through out the Cashin House and begin to understand structures through a first hand experience. Users can climb through the roof to learn about the purlins that hold up the roof, see the exposed flooring of the timber decking and even venture to the floating platform below the Cashin house to see the how foundation workTo frame the experience, two L shaped blocks are created to frame the Cashin House and create a rest area as the students wait to go for their learning journey. A small museum situatued at the cashin house to explain the housing typology and the techonics of the structure. Lastly, a platform has been created in front of the Cashin House to serve as a gathering spot for faciliators to give a debreif to the students. Students would then complete the journey by traveling via speed boat back to land.
