TAXI !!! By picking the all-embracing catchphrase ‘City in the Biennale, Biennale in the City’ for its 2012 theme, Interieur most certainly became best mates with Kortrijk. In the leap to this 23nd edition the design biennale surprised many by announcing to turn its regular formula since 1968 upside down and inside out, crawling outside the Xpo walls and pushing the design fair towards ‘a coherent visitor experience’ within the boundaries of Kortrijk’s city limits, and also making its connection to the Eurometropole tangible in places like Lille. A surprise or not, design events these days have to be imaginative and visionary, and flexible enough to hold itself against the light in order to improve, diversify and stay competitive in an overstocked market. With Kortrijk-born Lowie Vermeersch - as the new president of the Stichting Interieur and also in the curator seat of this 2012 edition - the biennale engaged a Lys city homeboy from international waters,

to create a bridge from the Xpo design trade fair to the various events in the city. We can already predict the very first traffic jams along the Doorniksesteenweg. For your pleasure we compiled a variation of adventurous stories and gathered several opinions from its major players on Design and the City in this 4th DAMN° Interieur Kortrijk city guide. Read all about the fruit of these collaborations in this handy little booklet, delivering various background info from the Xpo’s diagonal avenues to the wild exoticism on Buda Island. And although shuttles have been arranged from the Xpo to the city…Taxi Gilbert, get your golden spurs ready… • (WALTER BETTENS)

INTERIEUR A city in the biennale

16 / DAMN° INTERIEUR Kortrijk Guide 2012

A New Approach Vermeersch: courting design in Kortrijk It is as though the Interieur Design Biennale has truly blossomed. Not only does it now have a shining star at its centre but it possesses a spray of exhibitions and events that is colourful, multifaceted, adventurous, original, and extremely well composed. Really quite exotic, as DAMN° discovers. Tamara Gausi

The founders of the Interieur Design Biennale once spoke of a time of crisis when “design had lost sight of its aims, that its vital link with life was missing”*. Happily, the decades have marched on, but where is design now? And just what can Lowie Vermeersch bring to Interieur’s ongoing story? When Vermeersch announced that he would be taking over as president of the Interieur Foundation last May, expectations were high. As the award-winning design director of the prestigious Italian car firm Pininfarina (a feat he accomplished in 2007, aged just 33), Kortrijk-born Vermeersch had built a global reputation for his adherence to detail and innovation, and his elegant, people-first approach to design. Today, he’s applying those same principles to his work as curator of the 2012 Interieur Design Biennale. For the first time in its 44 year history, Belgium’s biggest design fair will be a ‘Biennale in the city, a city in the Biennale’, a concept that will play out in content and spatially with the creation of a ‘temporary design city’ inside Kortrijk Xpo and the incursion of the Biennale into Kortrijk-proper, mainly centred around the three-pronged Buda Island in the heart of the city. For Vermeersch, this cross-pollination is inspired not only by

LOUIS VERMEERSCH On narrative design

Interieur’s diverse audience but its potential for diverse outcomes. “It’s a trade fair but there are also many members of the general public who attend, which is something quite special,” he says. “Spreading projects between the Xpo and the city centre not only give us more physical space to expand the programme but it also symbolises the mix between the economic and cultural considerations of Interieur.” This year taking place over nine days, ‘change’ at Interieur aims to be more than a timely tag, with the vision of one solo guest of honour replaced with project rooms by seven designers, artists and architects (Future Primitives); an opening weekend festival; a two-day programme aimed specifically at design professionals; workshops, seminars, cultural events and installations, and the design circuit of Ventura Interieur, Interieur Extra, and partners in the Eurometropole, like those related to lille3000’s Fantastic 2012 event. All this not only enhances the immediate geographic reach of Interieur, but also intends to make it a more

pers.

Lowie Vermeersch © Wim Van Eesbeek

sensorial experience, one that extends through the daylight hours and into the night. As always, designers, companies – of which over 300 will be exhibiting at the fair – and other participants must apply to be chosen by the selection committees. But Vermeersch sees this as a mark of quality rather than creative snobbery, and to prove it, Interieur continues to invest heavily in young talent. “In 2010, there were 30 young designers participating in the Biennale, but this year, if you look at all the initiatives such as Ventura Interieur and the Interieur Design Awards, there are now about 140 of them.” For Vermeersch, the son of artist Rik Vermeersch and the grandson of prominent Flemish sculptor José Vermeersch, after leaving Pininfarina and setting up his own design firm, granstudio, in Turin, working for Interieur represents something of a homecoming. “I was basically born in the building where the new city programme takes place,” he laughs. So maybe he can explain why a city as small as Kortrijk has been able to position itself as one of Belgium’s key creative hubs? “It may be small, but there are many companies in the field of design here and also lots of opportunities for designers […] Historically, this used to be an area with a strong textile industry. But also, this is a place that very much has an attitude of doing things. Here, people who have good ideas like to try and make them happen.” Is it important for Interieur that Vermeersch is a designer with a global profile who also happens to be a local boy? “I think you would have to ask the team that,” he says with characteristic humility, “but one thing I can do is give a new impulse to the Biennale by approaching it with fresh eyes. The fact that I work internationally means

20 / DAMN° INTERIEUR Kortrijk Guide 2012

3

2

1

that I can help to place Interieur within an international context. But because I am from here, I also understand the culture and mentality.” And what’s next for Interieur? “Well, I think I should let the new curator answer that, but one of the things that I am very interested in, and one of the things Interieur touches upon, is how your living room and the inside of your home offers the perfect space to respond to what’s going on in the world outside. There is so much focus on speed in today’s world and we tend to think of the home as something that balances that. But in the future I think we’ll see how these new ways of living are also floating into our homes.” And if you can’t wait for tomorrow, Vermeersch’s own contemplation on Future Primitives is being presented by way of the selected design objects, Corso Blu, which embody not only the philosophical questions of the theme but also their relevance to the creative and commercial lynchpins of Interieur as an evolving event. •

4

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES Interieur Design Biennale: the Xpo community From a sprawling megalopolis to a compact cityscape, our experiences of living environments are as diverse as the people and places that define their fabrics, interwoven with the memories of the past and hopes for the future. Constancy and flux are part of the deal, so how will Interieur plot its course across the Xpo halls of Kortrijk? EMMA FIRMIN

24 / DAMN° INTERIEUR Kortrijk Guide 2012

Change will be experienced in many ways during the Interieur Design Biennale 2012. As the curator, Lowie Vermeersch has chosen to take the metaphor of the city – minus its congestion and pollution – further than words and is determined to make the event a “coherent visitor experience,” regardless of its multiple locations. It comes as welcome news that it was time to “let go of a rigid, grid-based floorplan” and streamline the experience without sacrificing the desire to make it a “true journey of discovery.” So it’s goodbye to hall trudging and sidelined feature exhibitions and hello to “open squares and diagonal boulevards… where experiences and meetings are central components.” So, map in hand, all senses alerted, what can visitors expect from this mix of commerce and culture at the Biennale’s Xpo location? Well apart from all the national and international exhibitors, one of the most striking departures this year is the absence of a solo guest of honour. Favouring the plurality of design in today’s networked world makes sense and underlines Vermeersch’s belief, in accord with the very roots of the Biennale, that the

event is about ‘living spaces, not just design objects’. Under the title Future Primitives, seven designers, artists, and architects have each been given 60m2 to build one project room in which to present their vision on tomorrow’s living experience, looking beyond the horizon but also questioning the primitive needs that take us to these places. At the Xpo will be the projects by Japanese design studio Nendo, American architect and philosopher Greg Lynn, Dutch design duo Makkink & Bey, and Belgian combo of photographer Fien Muller and artist Hannes Van Severen, with investigations that range from a concentration on specific elements to conceptual explorations. Vermeersch’s own take on the theme of Future Primitives can be seen in Corso Blu, a collection of familiar, new, and avant-garde designs by the likes of the Bouroullec brothers for Vitra, Pia Wustenberg and Knife & Saw. The exhibition will traverse a space of over 100m in length that cuts through the different halls, and its ‘imaginary’ windows

Corso Blu is one of three exhibitions that will diagonally navigate the Xpo, with Déjà-Vu curated by Moniek E. The latter sees four Flemish designers: Geoffrey Brussato, Maarten De Ceulaer, Nedda El-Asmar and Michaël Verheyden, placing their work in dialogue with four of their students/pupils, respectively Tom Lambeens, Charlotte Dumoncel d’Argence, Celina Gram and Jill Ryckaert, in a scenography by Caroline Voet that echoes the dynamic of Interieur at the Xpo. Design galleries such as Sophie Lachaert, Victor Hunt, Carpenters Workshop Gallery, Valerie Traan, Judy Straten, Ampersand, and Gosserez will provide a vision of design that may be limited in editions but not in imagination – and provide plenty of thought food for those who want to debate the borders of art and design. Ventura Projects, which was initiated by Organised in Design’s Dutch founders Margriet Vollenberg and Margo Konings, first put its ‘curated design districts’ into practice in Milan with the Ventura Lambrate, and this is its first venture into Kortrijk. With a mix of individual designers, design collectives, new brands, academies and institutions, it’s good to see that Interieur isn’t internalising the mood of change, and is making its ‘temporary city’ an open one. •

debat aangaat. •

Alain Gilles: Designer of the Year It’s a grand sounding title, but the recipient of this year’s Designer of the Year award certainly doesn’t have his head in the clouds or walk around like an emperor without clothes. Alain Gilles’ work has a focus and a sensibility that is both personal and pragmatic, working with international manufacturers including Casamania, Bonaldo, Buzzispace, Galerie Gosserez, Qui est Paul, and O’sun. Issuing the award were Interieur vzw, Knack Weekend and Le Vif Weekend magazines, in collaboration with Design Museum Gent, Grand Hornu Images, and Design September. DAMN° asked Gilles to flesh out the reasons highlighted for his ‘win’. (EF) How & why are you solid? Probably because people assume I have good know-how about different production methods. In a way, I have decent know-how, but I always tend to have to guess when playing with the limits of a material or technique, and to have to feel the material, even though I sculpt everything directly in 3D and don’t do prototypes! How & why are you relevant? If someone says I am relevant as a designer I reckon it is because I design pieces that make sense, that are usable, and that answer people’s needs in the world of today. My personal threshold for judging my own designs is usually their relevance and functionality. How & why are you industrially responsible?

I always try to turn my concepts, my dreams, into things that are producible at a cost that is more or less in line with the market of an editor or potential producer. I also try to make

products that are as sustainable as possible or have a design that can last and evolve, so they can have a second or third life. How & why are you poetic? By bringing a movement, a tension, a discussion within the piece itself. By adding a graphic or feminine touch to fairly masculine and architectural pieces. By designing products that have this simplexity: simplicity with enough complexity to remain interesting and tell a story. By addressing people on different levels, since there are usually different entry points into my designs, different layers. •

THE Déjà-vu street Moniek E. Bucquoye

Déjà-Vu is an exhibition about design affiliations, curated by Moniek E. Bucquoye and Chris Meplon. Design involves creativity and innovation, and if an object is not innovative, in theory it’s not ‘design’. How is it then that on first seeing design objects we often ask ourselves: “Hey, is this new? Haven’t I seen this before?” In 2005 Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa designed an aluminum chair for the Italian company Magis. It was called Déjà-Vu. In daily speech we use this term for things or situations we have already seen. But the more scientifically accepted explanation is that a sense of déjà-vu is caused by misperception. Is it true that more and more design objects look more and more alike, or is this just another instance of misperception? Objects that independently trigger a feeling of déjà-vu are deliberately juxtaposed in this exhibition. Their physical proximity allows us to put any vague impression to the test. Does this bring about a paradigm shift? Does it cause fundamental changes in our attitudes to concepts like originality and innovation? Let the debate begin. •

All’s FAIR Talking shop with Interieur’s exhibitors There are some 300 exhibitors taking part in the Interieur Design Biennale. Why? It might sound like an obvious question, but with the diverse and evolving channels that companies use to promote and communicate their products, it’s not mere musing. Do the time and money justify the outcomes? The innumerable design festivals, weeks and fairs, not to mention the heavyweight clout of Milan and Cologne, and events in emerging markets, mean that competition is fiercer than ever. So, how to retain relevance and make the experience of exhibiting one that fulfils commercial and creative demands? DAMN° asked regular, returning, and first-time Interieur exhibitors what such events mean for their companies. (EF) Questions: 1. Your company regularly attends/is returning/ is at Interieur for the first time, what is its specific importance for you? 2. There are so many different channels for you to communicate your company’s activities, what purpose do events like Interieur have? 3. How do you see the relationship between exhibitor, visitor and organiser evolving in the future?

THE REGULARS DuraviT Vincent Boone, general manager (BeLux)

1. Over the last couple of decades Duravit has been actively developing high quality design products in collaboration with renowned visionary designers that offer a long-term innovative perspective. Interieur is the perfect platform to showcase these new products because its visionary purpose coincides with that of our company. Visitors are likely to find what they are looking for. 2. Prior to the fair every exhibitor is judged on different aspects. The level of the Biennale is therefore very high. This

creates an environment that enables the visitor to have all their senses stimulated: look, hear, touch, feel and taste. 3. The organiser gives certain directives, creating a framework. The exhibitor then has to show the necessary creativity in presenting itself and its products. The visitor is free to decide whether a stand is worth a visit. We don’t see any major changes in this fairly traditional pattern. The ecological aspect will inevitably become more important. Most fairs already offer online platforms that allow visitors to review products they were interested in at the fair at a later time in their homes. 1. Interieur is still considered to be a unique and trendsetting occasion within the design & architecture world. Its focus on quality, innovation and content is a good match with the core values of Delta Light. Furthermore, it is the number one design event in our home market, in close proximity to our headquarters. 2. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet our target audience face-to-face. An occasion to launch new collections and get instant feedback. Personal contact is a very important aspect of our approach. 3. With the continuous evolution of multimedia, the Internet and people’s busy agendas, it is a challenge for both organisers and exhibitors to provide good and attractive content that convinces visitors to come. The exchange of information happens on different platforms, an event like Interieur needs to have enough relevance to get people to move away from their desks.

Abet Laminati (IT) Johnny Maris, general manager (BE)

1. Interieur is one of the most prestigious design events in Western Europe. At Interieur, Abet Laminati is able to present the company’s ideas and solutions in an inspiring space that we create specifically for this exciting event. Interieur delivers a number of marketing objectives, from brand building through to product demonstration and b2b contact with verified professional visitors. 2. Traditional advertising and communication tools seek to communicate appropriate messages to core audiences. Exhibitions and events like Interieur allow Abet Laminati to go one step further and engage in the power of ‘live’ conversation with our target audience. Interieur brings our brand messages alive. Events like Interieur are one of the most effective mediums for establishing and maintaining customer relations. In an increasingly digital age, they are the only media where buyer, seller and product physically come together. 3. An event like Interieur attracts strong brands and visitors from all over Europe, providing a platform to build relationships between exhibitors and visitors. One of the principle challenges is to understand how technology (e.g. digital environment, social media etc) may enhance the exhibition experience in the future.

Delta Light (BE) Reggy Van den Branden, marketingmanager 1.

THE FIRST-TIMERS De La Espada (PT) Luis De Oliveira, managing director

1. We have always admired Interieur, going back to a visit that could have been as early as the year 2000. It is among the bestcurated small exhibitions that we know. 2. Exhibitions remain for us the most important means of communication, alongside the Internet and social media. We have our issues with the current format and the cost of many exhibitions; we believe there should be more local exhibitions and these should be of a higher standard but at a lower cost, compared to the very large exhibitions that dominate the current scene. 3. We want to see a world where exhibitors focus on content and entertainment, with lower rental costs, and where exhibition organisers focus on raising revenue from visitors, providing them with a complete experience: food, accommodation, events, entertainment, retail etc. The idea of a fabulous department store or an inspiring market is the way forward, rather than the trade focused old-fashioned exhibition. Gubi (DK) Louise B Zastrow, creative director – brand & communication

1. Interieur is known for its uncompromising international selection of contemporary interior design products, and that is something we want to support, and it’s the right context for our brand. On top of that, Interieur is not only a trade fair, but it is also open to the public. It has become an international fair that attracts a lot of attention and also has a cultural context that is very interesting to follow. 2. We only participate in events when the design community is listening and ready to share the news – so this is a great

platform for creating attention for a new product, showing our brand and what we stand for. A lot of our products are also more globally oriented and not only Danish design; for example the collections by French designers Mathieu MatĂŠgot and Jacques Adnet, from which we will be showing new products here. 3. Hopefully we can collaborate even more in order to grow and develop the traditional fair into a wider and more exciting experience. We are very happy to see that this is changing these days, with everyone being allowed to tell their real story and create more experiences to inspire our customers.

LEICHT Küchen (DE) Harald Blessing, export manager

1. Interieur is a very important contact platform for meeting architects and designers. It is also important for the cultivation of our clientele and it gives us the opportunity to get in contact with new customers in our target group. 2. We can have direct contact with the opinion leaders in the market. We can show our kitchens, our design, our quality, all live. Independent from exhibitions and fairs, we also use all other channels of communication with our customers: online, print, and social media. 3. There should be a close cooperation between the exhibitor and the organiser, to install a successful fair that is interesting for visitors. All interests should be taken into consideration.

Gubi (DK) Louise B Zastrow, creatief directeur - merk & communicatie 1.

1. Baccarat has been the expression of a French art de vivre since 1764 […] Baccarat stands for heritage and modernity, so it was logical to return to Interieur to showcase our collections of Philippe Starck, Jaime Hayon, Patricia Urquiola, Arik Levy and Michele de Lucchi, among others. 2. The brand has been developing distinguished iconic products over the decades and has reinvested them via modern interpretations with leading designers or its own in-house design team. Baccarat is an international company building on unrivalled French performance in Europe, while presenting strong positions in emerging markets. We want to ensure a true luxury shopping experience, delivered through a network dominated by retail, in order to increase control on Baccarat’s brand image, while also relying on a perfectly managed wholesale network and alternative channels (e.g. A&D, ecommerce). Interieur is a unique platform for achieving these objectives. 3. For Baccarat, the interaction between the exhibitor, visitor, and organiser contributes to a relationship of a high standard, enabling us to expand the brand to an even broader, still very discerning audience, without compromising on our quality.

Lensvelt (NL) Hans Lensvelt, director

1. I thought it was the perfect occasion to present to an international audience the new programme my company has developed, On Stock. 2. Lensvelt manufactures innovative interior solutions to satisfy people and companies in every work, play, relax and think space, all to inspire architects and interior designers to do the unexpected. Brands and brand value is getting more and more important, especially for a company like Lensvelt. We do live in one world. A world that is more and more overpopulated by super large companies such as Ikea and MacDonald’s, which want to dictate our tastes, opinions and even our dreams. Shops are getting less important. They evolve into experience centres where potential buyers are triggered by the Internet and manipulated by search machines such as Google. At Lensvelt we focus on architects and interior designers as the most important influencers of the buying process of companies. [Therefore] I see Interieur as the best interface to inform those architects and interior designers. 3. It’s hard to say how this relationship will evolve, but for sure, as I’ve tried to explain, as an entrepreneur I will always need to join this kind of event where I can have direct contact with people from the design environment. •

We leven allemaal samen in één wereld. •

Designregio Kortrijk presents 5x5 Designregio Kortrijk aims to position the Kortrijk region as an area that uses design as a lever for its development. It directs its activities at a better integration of design culture in the region’s industrial fabric, in education, and in the public and cultural sectors. The result of a partnership between the city of Kortrijk, Interieur Foundation, Howest, Intercommunale Leiedal and the Flemish Chamber of Commerce (Voka West Flanders), Designregio Kortrijk is also a founding member and, since this year, regional hub of Design Platform Vlaanderen. A supplier of goods and services must continuously anticipate the market’s emerging needs and society’s ongoing changes. To do so successfully requires a coherent and effective approach. Cooperating and collaborating with an experienced designer offers the opportunity to generate new insights and helps to design and develop new products or services with lasting added value. As such, Designregio Kortrijk developed the 5X5 concept, which takes place for the third time after its successful debut in 2006. Over the course of a year, five businesses from the Kortrijk region team up with a leading designer, receiving substantial support throughout the process. • The five design couples this edition are: (hall5, Xpo) OUTDOOR WOOD CONCEPTS + Roel Vandebeek (1) DE WITTE LIETAER + Stefan Schöning (2) BMINUS + GBO (Eric Dumortier) (3) GROUP DE KEYZER/ALKE + Alain Berteau (4) LS BEDDING + Alain Gilles (5) 5x5 is part of the EFRO project Humin (n° 610, 2011-2013). The project helps in creating a competitive advantage through ‘people centred innovation’: innovating with and for the end user. Humin is set up by Genk/C-mine and Designregio Kortrijk, with the support of Flanders and Europe. 5X5 is coordinated by Kris Dekeyzer. www.designregio-kortrijk.be/projectlijnen/5x5

Design platform VLAANDEREN: nice to meet you! The bustling Flemish design landscape is internationally recognised as a designminded region. To strengthen design at home and abroad, five key organisations combine forces in the Design Platform Vlaanderen. Those five - Design Flanders, Flanders InShape, Flanders Fashion Institute, Designregio Kortrijk, and Design Hub Limburg - are supported by the Flemish ministers of economy (Enterprise Agency), innovation and culture. • Connect, enhance, transform Design Platform Vlaanderen is developing a strategic policy for Flemish design and promotes this at home and abroad. At the INTERIEUR Biennale 2012 the platform presents itself for the first time, and it does so as:

1

- DESIGN FUSION: Flanders Design Summit 2012 Monday, 22 October, Kortrijk Xpo Meeting Center XXL. Annita Beysen, Marcus Fairs, Max Fraser, Ineke Hans, Jaime Hayon James Irvine, Koen Verhaert, Dirk Wynants,... give inspiring lectures. Registration required: www.designplatformvlaanderen.be - FLANDERS AVENUE: 20-28 October, Kortrijk Xpo. In one of the diagonals of the Biennale, top Flemish designers exhibit together with the young talents. The duos are: Geoffrey Brusatto and Tom Lambeens, Maarten De Ceulaer and Charlotte Dumoncel d’Argence, Nedda El-Asmar and Celina Gram, and Michaël Verheyden and Jill Ryckaert. The scenography is by architect Caroline Voet. - PROJECT ROOM MULLER-VAN SEVEREN: 20-28 October, Kortrijk Xpo. Design Platform Vlaanderen promotes Flemish design and talent in an international context, and presents this top Flemish designer duo in one of the seven project rooms. (1) - VENTURA INTERIEUR: 20-28 October, Kortrijk Xpo & Buda Island. Sixteen designers enthusiastically display their objects. Design Platform Vlaanderen selected them after an open call and finances their position amongst other (inter)national participants in Ventura Interieur. (2) - DRESS A HOST(ESS)!: 20-28 October, Kortrijk Xpo & Buda Island. Damien Ravn won the DRESS A HOST(ESS)! competition - a joint initiative of Design Platform Vlaanderen and Interieur - and is clothing the hosts and hostesses in this edition of the Biennale. These projects are supported by Flanders in Action and Enterprise Agency.

- FLANDERS AVENUE: Kortrijk Xpo. - PROJECT ROOM MULLER-VAN SEVEREN: Kortrijk Xpo. UNFOLDING THE MAP Belgian Design: a matter of identity Even though the Interieur Biennale has a global reputation as an international platform, it is the moment when Belgian companies have the time, space & context to shine. Plucking out just a few of the country’s brands and designers on show, diverse exhibitors provide a number of clues for those in search of a national design identity. Dieter Van Den Storm

Not so long ago I sat in on a debate on design and national identity (What The Helsinki! Culture Through Design, La Fabrika, Brussels, 2012.) The different people taking part all agreed quite unanimously that it is easier to define another country’s design then one’s own. When we spoke about Scandinavian design, we all confirmed that there are certain recurrent elements such as working with natural materials like wood. Dutch design is strongly embedded in cultural references. The French is about ‘les arts décoratifs’. And the Italian like it a bit more extravagant. Broad strokes and nuances make up the map of commonalities – that’s a given – but, shifting or rooted in its DNA, there are clearly recognisable identities. But defining Belgian design was a harder thing to do. Is it design from Belgium or should we speak about objects designed in Belgium? First of all, we don’t have a major institute educating young designers as they do at the RCA in London, ECAL in Lausanne or the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Most of our designers are self-made, architects and interior architects turned into designer, or product designers, returning after a formation abroad. Secondly, our designers are

forced to break out. Living in a smaller market where the actual manufacturing opportunities are much harder to find, they aim their targets as high as they can, working for leading international companies. And they are rather successful at it. A quick checklist gives you Belgian Designer of the Year, Alain Gilles (see p32), who works for Italian companies such as Bonaldo and Casamanie; Sylvain Willenz, one of the busiest Belgian talents, and his designs for Cappellini, Karimoku and Established & Sons; while, those designers like Vincent Van Duysen and Xavier Lust, to name just two, have been working across borders for some time.

An international event like Interieur is proof that there are a lot of Belgian companies worth exposing and able to compete on an international scale. The industrial heritage of Kortrijk and the surrounding area was once world renowned for textiles, yet over the years this diminished and other industries have taken over. The outdoor

market, with companies such as Extremis, Manutti and Royal Botania, makes its presence felt and shows how the Belgian weather doesn’t dampen enthusiasm for life outside. The lighting industry is also strong, with one of the best export products at the moment. Companies including Modular, Wever & DucrÊ and Dark, all specialise in different sections, from spotlights

and LEDs to smile-inducing illumination. A lighting company such as Delta Light has also discovered the strength of collaboration and worked together with fashion designer Tim Van Steenbergen, creating his own light based on an existing model. This fashion designer is being picked up by more than media headlines, with textile company Aristide asking him to create

patterns and textiles for the home sector. Done well, these kinds of exchanges can give different companies the exposure they want and need, and consumers a product that is the result of different ways of thinking. For example, in recent years companies like Serax, which specialises in all kinds of tableware and home accessories, has invested in some original collaborations, such as the designer/chef partnerships between Nedda El-Asmar/ Wout Bru, and Ann Van Hoey /Peter Goossens. Another Belgian talent is Brussels-based designer Jean-François d’Or. He has objects in production with the French company Ligne Roset and Domani. At Interieur he presents some new mirrors for REFLECT+. A new brand from Belgian mirror producer Deknudt, this combination of strong ideas matched by smart material choices and inventive insights, is interpreted by companies in various forms and functions throughout Interieur: Vasco’s heating concepts; Novy’s cooker hoods; and Modulyss’ carpet tiles. And if you think about Interieur refocusing on living environments, it’s just these kinds of exhibitors

that you should visit to have daily impact on your life. Continuing the theme in another place and space, Bart Lens is showing his own designs under the name Objet B’Art, while the young company Basalte shows that touch-sensitive switches are not the future but the present. And in this head-rush of activity, new furniture and home accessory company Mookum puts exclusive objects from Belgian designers under the spotlight. Surprising, innovative, flexible, and with survival skills, maybe these characteristics, rather than any visual signposts, point to an identity that can be read by any language or culture. • 3

Modular Lighting Instruments Armoedestraat 71, 8800 Roeselare

With its worldwide network, fairs are an essential platform for Modular to meet its international dealers and clients. Participating in the Italian and German shows of Euroluce and Light & Building respectively, the company’s press & communication’s manager, Els Kerckhof, sees the synergy with Kortrijk’s biennale: “Interieur is important in the way that it is a milestone within our company to launch novelties.” This year the company will be showcasing new designs at its headquarters in Roeselare during Interieur, with its authentic approach summed up by Kerckhof when she notes that it remains “faithful to our design process by working with some internal designers, in collaboration with the typical Modular external designers. Mainly for DNA reasons…” Kerckhof words reflect Modular’s precision and breadth of perspective: “Our core business is architectural lighting, we expect far more than just design. It’s the ultimate combination between technology and design...Hasselt, Antwerp and Kortrijk have education programmes for product developers/designers and we work with them on a regular basis.” www.supermodular.com

For Stephane De Winter, the CEO of Manutti, since the last Interieur, the company has been moving its furniture for outdoor living spaces in a more design-led direction. Developing its international profile, it has become a key player in Europe and has set America in its sights. When it comes to the current economic context, De Winter’s message is clear: “Manutti didn’t stop evolving. We didn’t deteriorate.” And, with good responses from clients at a range of events, and collaborations with Belgian designers such as Gerd Couckhuyt, whose work includes the Mood lounge and coffee tables, De Winter is confident about the company’s decisions. But what about the broader Belgian design context? At the moment, De Winter thinks “there is a good collaboration between schools, like the Howest in Kortrijk and the KHLim in Diepenbeek, and companies. They invest in design and the presentation of furniture, and we have to keep on stimulating that in the future.” www.manutti.com

Deknudt Mirrors, REFLECT+ Kortrijk Xpo, Hall 4, stand 447

Deknudt is another Belgian company for whom the last couple of years have been intensive, what Annemie Vanzieleghem, in-house designer and head of Design and R&D, describes as “special and hectic”. The company started developing, producing and selling a totally new exclusive mirror collection, working with external designers Bart Lens, Stefan Schöning and Jean-François D’or for its Reflect+ collection (on show at Interieur), and developing a concept with MADE (design studio), which Vanzieleghem says should be ready in January 2013. Vanzieleghem cheers on such initiatives like the BUDA Factory, seeing the special labs and codevelopment projects as a way to “stimulate the cooperation between industry and product design students.” However, Vanzieleghem’s points out the company’s obligations to its consumers: to make good, well-designed products, which are conscious of price accessibility. And while this last word is one Vanzieleghem associates with the idea of a Belgian design identity, she doesn’t confuse characteristics with content. www.deknudtmirrors.com

With its sociable designs that mix long-held experiences of dining & gaming tables, Fusion Tables’ sales & marketing manager, Thierry Hoyaux, is not shy to say that two years ago the company’s first Interieur participation was “amazing.” Going on to exhibit in the UK, Spain and Germany, he clearly identifies a “serious lift in our sales development,” a result backed up by new sales agents and points-of-sale, which according to Hoyaux were so convincing it motivated the company to develop new lacquered ranges, a lighting system and other concepts. For Hoyaux, Belgian designers are “artists with a business brain,” and surveying the industry as a whole, he sees the country as well placed to adapt products in a worldwide market, with questions of a national design identity better replaced by its multifaceted considerations: a humble approach; a constructive art to improve the user’s everyday life. www.fusiontables.com

NOVY Hall 2, stand 217

The marketing manager of Novy, Katrien Van Hecke, has seen the company she works for expands its European presence over the last few years, identifying its home market, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Spain as particularly strong. Specialising in hoods for a range of cookers that make kitchen spaces living rooms, Novy works with an internal design team, and Van Hecke is another industry figure who focuses on the mind-set of a Belgian design identity: no-nonsense, and having a real link to consumers’ needs. www.novy.be

1

Basalte Hall 3, stand 302

Floating quotes from the likes of Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs across the top of its website, the design-technology of Basalte’s home automation systems has been awarded numerous prizes. For the company’s CEO, Klaas Arnout, such professional acknowledgment enables Basalte to “further strengthen our position in the market and to establish our brand.” Currently working with its Belgian design team of Sandra Maes and Arnout, for the latter “ the economic reality forces Belgium to focus on creativity…Luckily there are a lot of successful examples of Belgian companies focusing on design as a true asset… This wouldn’t be possible without the necessary talent…so I hope that politics and governments keep on investing in the necessary initiatives to further nourish these talents.” And unlike some, Arnout zooms in on a Belgian design identity, manifested in levels of creativity, knowledge about materials and craftsmanship, something he says “we should cherish and be proud of.” www.basalte.be

THE ISLAND OF EXPECTATIONS BUDA Factory: A new way to produce Over the last few years the urban renewal of the Buda Island in the heart of Kortrijk has been a labour of love - and probably a few sleepless nights about funding - for the many organisations and individuals that have made this idea a living, breathing reality. A cultural hub described as a ‘radical encounter of art and economy’, which has been seen through by the City of Kortrijk and supported by the Flemish Government, European Union, public institutions and private partners, after the successful transformation and opening of the BUDA Arts Centre and Buda Tower, now comes the BUDA Factory. In perfect timing with Interieur, DAMn° provides an insider’s view of this very modern interpretation of a production line. pieter michiels

The story of BUDA Island in Kortrijk is one of slow but steady growth. For me, it’s a story that I have seen emerge, develop and sometimes experience struggles, from nearby, as a citizen, and from a distance, as a visitor. But the City and the organisations that already welcome many artists, entrepreneurs, students, teachers and residents through various initiatives have maintained the firm belief that this island should be one of creation. At its heart is the belief that opinions differ and that this difference is a good thing. It sets fire to ideas that never would have emerged in isolation, collisions that are not a car-crash but meeting points at unlikely crossroads. It would be lovely to say that ‘islands are meeting on an island’ and are able to turn the world around. Well, it’s not going to happen overnight. But these kinds of breeding grounds are definitely surfacing all over the world. The fact that Kortrijk chooses to do this shows it has some balls. And it takes guts to achieve glory, does it not? But the atmosphere on BUDA Island has been shifting for some time. Shifting towards an air of interaction, creation: kitchen gardens are popping up; cosy bars with something to tell are opening, with more to come; there

is a popular stage for high-profile dance and theatre performances; youngsters are hanging out there; and start-ups are hunting to find some tenantless ground. The most recent addition to this urban reef brings a new environment: a city factory… the BUDA Factory. It has been astonishing to see a philosophy come together, with the old textile factory of Desmet-Dejaeghere transformed by Flemish architect Peter Swinnen’s firm 51N4E into a fantastic, ultra-light public space. This building breathes life into the values of ‘meeting’, ‘creating’ and ‘sharing’ with which BUDA Island has been nourished since it was first conceived, fleshing out its thinking with something more tangible. “...life is about the people you meet, and the things you create with them. So go out and start creating...” (Holstee Manifesto). Some critics would/will call it over-the-top to evoke these words, but for others the BUDA Factory is a tremendous opportunity because these places can become part of the changes happening within the (creative) economy. The power is shifting from the company that dictates what the customer needs to a vast number of customers who are becoming more and more conscious about their own (product or service) needs.

(The Holstee Manifesto).

BUDA::lab workshop Photo: Pieter Michiels

At the BUDA Factory, a collection of existing principles and beliefs can be tested and pushed beyond their current boundaries: codesigning between a company and its customers; local and small-batch productions; hyper fast community driven innovations; group-buying applications; micro-funding of great ideas; the importance of an honest and sustainable story behind a product… these all indicate that a new, creative, parallel economy is reaching its breakthrough. It is against this backdrop, but not in the background, that the BUDA Factory is, in a sense, part of a new kind of factory with a real (prototyping) production facility on its ground floor: BUDA::lab. This workshop, inspired by the ‘Techshop’ (www.techshop. com) initiatives spread out all over the USA, is open for everyone interested in creating just about anything: a student sweating over his or her graduation prototype; a small start-up unable to invest in its own small workshop; a resident in need of an accurate tool for a short period; an artist interested in testing new production technologies; companies looking for a flexible workshop, inspiration, or a place to moveinto temporarily; BUDA::lab offers a home to all. Furthermore, the BUDA::lab possesses a broad range of machinery, but it is still quite basic. Thus, the aspiration is to set up concrete collaborations with production facilities in the locale in order to build-up a network of professional machinery that is available during otherwise idle times. At BUDA::lab, words and actions do not compete for intellectual priority but co-exist to explore a future that is both near and far. •

DESIGN FUSION, Vlaanderen Design Summit 2012

Ideal Love: a series of

22 October, Entrance Meeting Centre Hall XXL Design can be a tool for ground-breaking change, for the visualisation of business strategies and the improvement and refinement of our lives and the world at large. But our world and our society are changing rapidly, which also means a changing role for design and the designer. We need to take a holistic responsibility, think in creative paths and develop more sustainable design intelligence. A joint initiative of the Design Platform Flanders, Design Fusion brings together Flemish and international speakers to explore the value of design and its implementation as a critical resource to transform Flanders into a creative, competitive, polyvalent and human economy that creates sustainable wealth, employment and society in the context of global challenges. Programme 12h-13h: INEKE HANS - designer (NL), KOEN VERHAERT - founder of Verhaert (BE) 15h-16h: MAX FRASER - deputy director London Design Festival (UK), ANNITA BEYSEN - managing partner at u-sentric (BE), JAMES IRVINE designer (UK) 18h-19h: JAIME HAYON - designer (ES), DIRK WYNANTS - Extremis (BE), MARCUS FAIRS - Dezeen editor-in-chief (UK). The event will be followed by cocktail and networking + finger food (create your own creative dish) + music and party (programme subject to change) Register now online. symposiums by communication designer, Nuno Coelho (PT) 22 + 27/28 October (check www.interieur.be/calendar for exact times)*

For Plato, a symposium was a philosophical dialogue that dealt with ideal love and the vision of absolute beauty. Symposiums were in fact, a drinking party with music, performance and intellectual conversation. Yet today, they are too often synonymous with long presentations, which while providing some useful insights can be simply dull. Not so at Kortrijk, where Nuno Coelho is organising a series of informal, yet philosophical conversations fuelled by Belgian beer and snacks, which aim to bridge the gap between design theory, practice and commerce. In keeping with the roots of symposiums and interacting with the setting and atmosphere of the Interieur Bistro, three hosts will lure guests to three different symposiums happening simultaneously at different tables. The symposiums include the following topics: 1. What is the current status of objects as meaning-making machines? 2. What sensorial experiences can be relevant in our future living environment? Which experiences are meaningful? Do we see our living environment, our interior, as the ideal place to create that balance? 3. What is the relevance of ‘authorship’ or a signature style in todays design context?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT Design gets tasty The recipe for a satisfying and sometimes surprising culinary experience is not limited to the ingredients you put into your mouth. And design’s relationship to solids and liquids has long been more than flashy or raw interiors. Food-design and design-food, from how and where the stuff on your plate gets there to the sheer joy of sharing a meal, there’s a high and low calorie menu of ideas to tuck into. ALOK B. NANDI

The mood for food is in full swing these days. Interieur 2012 is of course following the trend, bringing the salon into the city and the city into the salon, with the Interieur Bistro at the BUDA Tower, pop-up bars, alternative eateries and other gastroon-the-move experiences (see page 82). As to the world outside of Kortrijk, this year the noted Core77 Design Awards had - for the first time ever - a category for Food Design, and in a more academic tone, in June, London hosted a major conference on ‘Designing Food and Designing for Food’. These last few years have also seen the emergence of a fuzzy fooddesign terrain, with ‘design culinaire’ at the St-Etienne Design Biennale in France, among other things, and an avant-garde lead taken by the Eindhoven Design Academy & co-adepts. The very nature of design and its multiple dimensions are expanding design territories. That’s obvious. We have seen the appearance of so many sectors, such as strategic design, interaction design, service design... and now food design. But design is about transformation. Process and form. The centre of gravity seems to be moving away from the 20th century industrial de-

THE ALLCONSUMING HUMAN Premsela’s exhibition at the Designhuis in Eindhoven, Food Culture: Eating by Design features works that link design, food and the origins of what we eat. Selected projects map our complex relationship with food and make visitors conscious of how it is produced. sign focus, leaving behind the good old ‘products’ approach. So how can food be more than just an excuse to show more chairs and suspended lights? From Milan to London, from the Helsinki World Design Capital to Design Week in any city, food is and will be a hot topic. The spectacle of food is pushing the boundaries from functional to aesthetic, and even non-aesthetic. There are also activities which allow us to look deep into the food matter, hence to explore design questions in which the wicked problems of human society not only stick to the icing on the

cake, a layer in which design and decoration are in complete confusion. Let’s focus for example on Note by Note Cuisine. First proposed in 1994 by Hervé This (published in Scientific American magazine), the initial proposal was to improve food... but the next idea was obvious: to make dishes entirely from compounds. Note by Note Cuisine does not use meat, fish, vegetable or fruits, but rather compounds, either pure compounds or mixtures, just like electronic music is not using trumpets or violins, but rather pure waves in which sounds and music are

mixed. For Note by Note Cuisine, the cook has to design the shapes of the various parts of the dish, design the colours, the tastes, the smells, the temperatures, the trigeminal stimulation, the consistencies, the nutritional aspects, etc. Hervé This was the co-initiator of molecular cuisine, but these days he is more focused on Note by Note, showing the feasibility of many meals by well-known chefs. In Belgium, Sang Hoon Degeimbre is a chef exploring questions raised by the connections between culinary art, science and design, and would be an ideal candidate to investigate the Note by Note approach.

3

Food design is an area where co-creation dynamics are key. And the terrain is complex, as designers not only need to cooperate with scientists and policy makers, but also with the rural sectors, and so forth. To quote Hervé This, we could argue that many design questions arise from this 4

new cuisine: land development, economy, sensorial technique, art, politics, nutrition, toxicology… Indeed, food design isn’t limited to the styling of a dish. The entire range, from critical design to experience design to systems shaping, let us all, as ‘designers’, act on form, process, and transformation - for the human being and for humanity! •

EAT, DRINK, INTERIEUR The flavours of Kortrijk What does a biennale taste like? How does it pour itself into the memories of all those who take part? Exemplifying the sensory experience of this year’s Interieur, there is a pick ‘n’ mix of events and locations to suit those who like nothing more than to roll-up their sleeves and dive into their dishes, share, and make the act of eating and drinking a moment that fulfils and leaves more than a pleasant after-taste. Alternatively, you can go solo, take a pause, and swallow the atmosphere. Interieur Bistro BUDA Island, BUDA Factory (1st floor) Drawing the Interieur crowd into the heart of its city neighbourhood, keep checking the Interieur website for the plentiful activities that will take place on its urban reef. The UK’s DesignMarketo serves up Freshly Cut, a simple selection of daily menus, where visitors can ‘kijk in the kitchen’ and eat freshly made local food in surroundings that drip with design. Choose your own chair from the selected designs; sniff the suspended garden of herbs and plants; and take a seat at the long, communal tables. It’s warm, welcoming, and a place where design, food, and the company of friends are (within limits) guaranteed not to give you indigestion! Interieur Bistro is open daily from lunchtime until late, offering a quick lunch or a more (in) formal evening dinner. To ensure a place call: +32 471 763 177

At the Xpo… You need energy for Interieur and at the Xpo grounds there are plenty of bars to stop off at and refuel. Criss-crossing the halls, you can pause at Bar Maison, Black Bar, Box Bar, Be Bar, and if you want a mouthful of glamour, treat yourself to the Oyster Bar.

LOVEGROVE IN THE LOWLANDS Ross Lovegrove in Kortrijk & Lille The Eurometropole is a somewhat jargonistic-sounding name, with a geographic vagueness that could be applied to anywhere in Europe, where there is - you guessed it – a metropole. However, don’t let the blandness of the banner put you off, the axis of Lille-Kortrijk-Tournai, is working together in more than words. And with the dates of the Interieur Design Biennale and Lille’s Fantastic nicely overlapping, British designer Ross Lovegrove embodies its boundarybreaking endeavours in projects for both Interieur and Fantastic 2012. EMMA FIRMIN 1

Ross Lovegrove is one of Interieur’s Future Primitives and installing his UFO project at the Gare Lille Flandres. Engaged and engaging with design from its philosophy, concept and economics to componentry, production and post-use life, for some his organic forms are too slick and shiny, but like an iceberg such object focus is only the surface of the mind at work. As he says, “being an industrial designer is not about going to Milan and doing a couple of chairs,” and is adamant that design, like art, needs more conceptual debate. It’s not superfluous self-indulgence, but the belief that “strangeness is the consequence of innovative thinking” and that industrial design has to address questions of “conscious, morality, making, resources, global cultures and differences.” He is aware that even the job description ‘designer’ has become a “disposable, non-specific title,” missing a definition that needs to be “more involved in the philosophy of [its] time” and not reduced to just a question of money that doesn’t exercise minds – whether you are making or consuming the product. So Lovegrove, whose forms are rooted in “the deep past and the deep future”, must have eloquently screamed out for inclu-

sion in Lowie Vermeersch’s Future Primitive project rooms at Interieur. At the BUDA Factory in Kortrijk, visitors will see an installation that was partly inspired by a Pininfarina CNR study in the mid-1970s, a concept car that Lovegrove describes as a “weird looking fish you could see swimming in the Amazon.” Testing ideas with its original designers in Turin and collaborating with a Columbia University architect, he has taken this form several stages further, to simulate the “purest aerodynamic form containing humans that I can create,” reversing the logic and going for “instinctive override.” There’s no wheels, but a ‘”super digital flow that feels like new nature.” You will only be able to read the form through projections, which will be streamed, accel-

erated and decelerated, Lovegrove aiming “to create an amazing, experiential dimension, closer to art than design.” The UFO experience at Lille will be similarly out of this world. Built in Montpellier, even Lovegrove is impressed by the scale of the object, which at the end of the day is still transport. Space, the objects that do/could fly through it and even extraterrestrials is a subject that Lovegrove finds compulsive. On the one hand you have the serious scientific analysis by NASA and the likes, and on the other hand there are the little green men hunters. But as he showed with a poster of around 50 UFO typologies there is a biodiversity of these objects – some of which look plain wrong in their aerodynamic approach to the biosphere, while others…well maybe they could work. And as for COS, it’s a city-based car project that has been actively bouncing around Lovegrove’s mind for some eight years, even getting to engineering stage. He sees Lille as somewhere that has not given up on the car, but unlike other places like London is not infested by these “mini elephants.” Breaking free from the linear movement of cars, combustion engines and even hybrids, as well as challenging “product economics relative to industry standards”, COS would use I.A and solar energy, exemplifying Lovegrove’s idea

2

of relating car to nature, and a way of tackling the dangerous detachment that the usual tin car promotes. And whether such a vehicle could or should happen in Lovegrove’s lifetime, it is part of his ‘future primitivism’ and search for the “genesis of form” that is a “…soft slow silent walk to view an object through the evolutionary spirit of mankind.” *• Interieur Design Biennale: 20 – 28 October 2012 Fantastic 2012: 6 October – 13 January 2013 www.rosslovegrove.com www.eurometropolis.eu www.interieur.be www.lille3000.eu www.lille-design.com www.designregio-kortrijk.be The Eurometropole was created in 2008 and incorporates 147 Belgian and French communes. INTERIEUR: THE CITY EXPERIENCE BUDA Island highlights The ‘Biennale in the City’ is a many-tentacled array of exhibitions, installations, pop-up events, talks, workshops, design-defined happenings and even concerts that will reach into the many corners of Kortrijk, extending its reach with the Interieur Extra programme (highlights, from p.102). Throbbing away at its centre is the BUDA Island, where the urban spaces it provides are ideal for exploring the many ways that design can be manifested, with projects from long-established designers, architects and artists, and young & upcoming creatives, together testing the boundaries of what design and a biennale looks, sounds, feels, thinks and tastes like.

One of Interieur’s headline exhibitions, the Future Primitives projects also find their way into the city of Kortrijk. Artist David Bowen (USA) presents ‘underwater’, a large-scale suspended installation that uses Microsoft Kinect to collect real-time surface data from the local river Leie, which then articulates the project’s mechanics. Meanwhile, the collective of Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel that makes up Troika (GB), inscribes one architectural space within another,

with a cathedral of 22 columns made of light, bent with lenses, to create a structure that you can see but can’t touch. And at the crossroads between technology, materials science and intelligent organic forms, Ross Lovegrove (GB) uses computational fluid dynamics and informs the software to define the ideal streamlined shape of his optimal streamlined vehicle, in an experience he says will be closer to art than design.

A collaboration that clicks Veuve Clicquot meets Fusiontables The prestigious champagne house Veuve Clicquot has teamed up with Belgian design label Fusiontables for a somewhat heavenly sort of project. And what, you might ask, is the result of this curious collaboration? Well, an elegant dining table that transforms into a billiards table, that’s what. This was not at all a frivolous choice of object, for everyone knows that the game is popular worldwide. And to nicely round things off, the design agency Saluc created an exclusive range of balls in Veuve Clicquot’s beloved yellow. The numbered series of ‘Veuve Cliquot by Fusiontables’ tables, in which precious materials were employed by highly skilled Belgian craftsmen, is presented as a very special limited edition of 99. This innovative product in the emblematic Veuve Clicquot colours thus perfectly illustrates the famous champagne brand’s love for design, expounding upon the link between innovation and the French art de vivre, two essential values it heartily upholds. The table premiered in Brussels during the opening of Design September 2012. Since its beginnings in 1772 Veuve Clicquot has always put quality before quantity. Today it affirms its bold and modern approach by taking part in various events around contemporary design and by working with various artists. Many designers and architects of international renown have meanwhile contributed to different projects. An example of a recent realisation is the thorough renovation of the Hôtel du Marc in Reims, France by architect Bruno Moinard, complete with a gazebo in the garden designed by the Campana Brothers. •

RECIPROCITY design liège Various locations throughout Liège

05 - 28 October 2012 RECIPROCITY design liège is the new name and sixth outing of the International Design Biennial in Liège. It’s a title that is reflected in the event’s programme, which underlines some of the ethical values that define design: exchange, respect and generosity. Committing itself to exploring social innovation in this and future editions, the role of design and of designers in what is a process of change is explored in different ways, from scales to systemics, memories to masterplans, and one of the aims of event is to recognise and translate the potential of a social project into a new prototype of product-service, highlighting the frameworks that rationalise the intentions of local actions to make them feasible and accessible at the public level. At the Meeting Point and the Mapping the Design World project, visitors can immerse themselves in every aspect of the event and its theme: social design and the way it manifests itself in a worldwide context, with a focus on the interests of the entire city and its population. The biennial features the key exhibitions Memorabilia, Craft&Industry, Welcome to Saint-Gilles, and KidsDrivenDesign, plus guest shows, conferences and projects that involve everyone from the city’s shopkeepers to its students.
