Mat-scape

USC Fabrication Lab Los Angeles, CA Grad Studio || _ Spring 2014 Prof. Gary Paige Duration: 6 Weeks Mat-scape is a hybrid between a building and a landscape—a building-landscape consisting of hard and soft surfaces and spaces. Conceived as a new architectural typology for the USC campus, Mat-scape has a unique spatial form that combines the soft (non- Euclidean geometry and topography) with the hard (steel, glass and a lightweight aluminum brise-soleil), resulting in an architectural expression that celebrates innovative and emerging technology. Conceptually, the project begins with a simple mat that measures 150 by 150 by 30 feet and mirrors the footprint of Watt Hall on the South Lawn. The initial gesture was to section the volume horizontally and separate it into three distinct programmatic layers: The lower portion is submerged below grade and houses the MatLAB®; the upper part is propped above ground and contains the studios, lecture hall and exhibition space. The area between the two layers is a new social space for the cam- pus—a shaded park that contains an ou door café and works as a threshold between the Watt Way entrance and the Watt Hall courtyard. The three layers are woven together by large pilotis that not only support the upper mat and provide column-free spaces, but also operate as courtyards and voids that funnel air and light into the ground and basement levels. Arch tecturally, the shared intent is to produce a new model for building on campus that celebrates innovation through the application of emerging tec nology and sustainable practices.

Perf-Form Performative Envelope System Prototype Los Angeles, CA Grad Studio || _ Spring 2014 Prof. Gary Paige Duration: 6 Weeks This project takes the previous building envelope as a point of departure for design research. Specifically, the focus is on developing strategies and tactics for optimizing the energy performance of a generic facade through the design of a new envelope system. Following a period of analysis and testing, a set of functional (and formal) problems were identified and served as a basis for a performance agenda. Instead of a hermetically sealed envelope and repetitive elevation system, the proposed PERF速 adopts strategies of differentiation and operability as design tools to optimize performance, resulting in an envelope system that is not only environmentally responsive and easily controlled by the occupants but also provides an identity that is relevant for a building dedicated to experimentation and application of digital fabrication technologies.

Luci-otel Boutique Hotel Venice beach, Los Angeles, CA Grad Studio ||| _ Fall 2014 Prof. Olivier Touraine Duration: 12 weeks Venice beach hotel is a boutique hotel at the heart of Venice beach, Los Angeles. This hotel is going to serve a variety of tourists and guests in a vibrant neighborhood that is only 5 minutes away from the beach. Considering the fact that the site is located at a one of the historic cores of LA, there were many restrictions that had to be observed in the design. Venice Boutique hotel is a hybrid between a static nature of architecture and a dynamic movement of color and light. Basically established through a subtractive forming methodology, this hotel brings miscellaneous themes and sprites by means of a thin layer of light and color that is added to a facaded design. The changing concept of this boutique hotel helps to make it an attractive pin point for a variety of people who want to spend a vacation or a business trip with different interests. The Subsidiary approach of forming outer shell on the other hand resonates a modern Venetian style that is specific to this historic area an in respect to natural forces such as natural sun light, airflow and in regards to demographic features of the site.

Sound Space - LA

Music School Los Angeles, CA Grad Studio || _ Fall 2013 Prof. Andy Ku Duration: 12 Weeks The Sound space LA is a music school working mainly as a civic building in the area of Bunker Hill. The purpose of this project is mainly to convert this nearly obsolete area to a productive, social-interactive interface with all needed infrastructural resources to create, share and promote music in the context of a space. One of the other scopes of the project which is situated in between old down town and new down town LA in Bunker Hill is to connect these two contrasting phases with a smooth transitional pace. The sound space LA is an opportunity for music to resonate. How much the music succeeds to resonate in the parts of this project whether physically, psychologically or cognitively depends on how the school is being conceived. The sound space is a place to experience music with a variety kind of audience including students, individuals afflicted with the facilities and people. The music school section of the project deals only with a portion of the clients; the rest are the people who want to discover the project, who pass by the exterior parts of the site and find themselves with a highly experiential atmosphere dealing with music. The project provide an opportunity specially for the deprived sect of the society who did not have had the chance to go to concerts and fancy performances but can still explore miscellaneous styles of music played in exterior programs for free and elevate their knowledge of music as conscious audiences and literally find their own taste of music regardless of others issues even for several minutes per day.

Verti-garden 80-unit residential complex Tehran, Iran Bachelor thesis project _ Fall 2012 Prof. Kamran Safamanesh Duration: 12 weeks

the whole idea is based on a very simple principle and that is to provide more space for each family. this is done by predicting flexible areas in the combination of open and closed spaces and also in the layouts of the appartments. major concept: dispensed yards in the sky : the people of the local society weren’t used to live in appartements, the main idea was to provide a private yard for each of the units so they can enjoy their own share of open and semi open space. flexible units: interior unit-s are designed flexible to meet the need of little appartements to have greater space for some specific occasions. self sufficiency: predicting some public areas such as grate storages or public facilities to be rented providing the expenses of maintenance of the complex.

One-design (sailing architecture)

Emergency shelter prototype Grad studio IV _ Spring 2015 Prof. Geoffrey Von Oyen Duration: 4 weeks the concept emulates performance sailing design and technologies in its structural and non-structural components. Materiality, ergonomics and environmental conditions add rigor to the critical thinking that shapes the space of the program, the parameters of the structure and the - geographical adaptability and service of the envelope over short and long periods of time.

Their geometry follows strict rules of mast, engineered-design. Its tapered geometry is a diagram of the transfer and the path of wind loads from the sail to the mast, under extreme and constant lateral stresses while coping with gravity loads as a vertical cantilever, as well as logical use and distribution of material within a component.

When deployed, the shelter diagram reads as a layered envelope - in tension - attached to two structural frames on either side of it. The envelope is a light weight interchangeable solution, a layered assembly that can easily adapt to different climate condition. They work in the same way the sails do; - one or multiple sails - that best suite only to certain conditions. The structural frames are light weight and made of composite materials - carbon reinforced plastic -.

The concept extends the life of the design rules and critical thinking that have shaped the shelter. Along with the mast and the sail principles already considered, rigging technologies help create a new set of rules about how we think and design a typical single family house. Sail boats are not grounded, they float. A natural condition and sustainable resource enables its existence and performance. The single family house second of floor tomorrow - sfhot - may float as well. A group of trees may enable its existence and performance - equally efficient-. In principle, trees - also a sustainable resource -, will replace the need for foundation and foundation works which are highly invasive to the strata - above and underground -. With the help of rigging technologies the sfhot - will be grounded at the same time remain mobile. Mobility is essential to the family cell and its members. 50 FT

We must acknowledge that a family , changes its needs for products and services over time. The industries of consumer products and services know that. So in the interest of profit they are always finding ways of improving “the recipe”; mainly through mass -production and customization. The output, is always, highly focused on the individual, on his/hers way of living, understanding and usage of the product. The - sfhot - could also be a “consumer product”. Always refined and efficient through the use of mass production techniques and smarter materials and technologies.

The concept promotes a “community based living” that encourages people to live in a very efficient and sustainable way, by regenerating the natural component of the site, reducing the reliance on mega-infrastructures for their need for utilities and through the use of light weight, highly adaptable, living space. The multifamily concept relies on a grid of trees -Canary Island Pine, planted 7- 10 years ahead, which is both structure and master plan. Given the grids, the future residents are open to choose where they desire to “rigg” their living spaces. The result will be a community in constant change and highly optimized. Different - sfhot - arrangements will developed a divers master plan, where privacy and public can constantly adapt to suit individual and community preferences and needs.
