The nine-year-old Siso, sponsored by Osaka Iridology and Dunlop, barged into the final round of the 10-Under Unisex division after thrashing Tim Polero, 6-4, 6-3, yesterday. Siso, ranked No.3 in the division, set up a titular duel with Deo Talatayod of Manila. Talatayod secured his place in the finals after scoring an upset win over Pocholo Macalino, RP’s 10-Under No.2. The two players will dispute the crown today. Siso’s older brother, Bernadine “Niño”, and fellow University of San Carlos South Grade School player, Krestil Mae Buenacosa, were defeated in their respective categories. Buenacosa fell to Sarah Jane Lim, RP’s No.1 in the 12-Under Girls division, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, while Bernardine bowed to Kim Ivor Saraza of Manila, 7-5, 6-4, in the 12-Under semis. JSV
DESPITE the hullabaloo, Team Cebu City athletes will be going to the International Children’s Olympics in Cleveland, USA in July. Games, Amusement and Professional Sports chairman Slyvan “Jack” Jakosalem assured the athletes and their parents of the city’s participation to the international games. “Of course we are going,” Jakosalem told Sun.Star. “There’s no order from the mayor that we will forego our trip to Cleveland.” Cebu City’s participation to the international meet was reportedly muddled because of the case of Grace Melicor, an administrative assistant of Vice Mayor Michael Rama who failed to return to the country following a work-related trip to the US. Sources at the Cebu City Sports Commission revealed that during the signing of the memorandum of agreement between the City and Cleveland representatives Tess Okihara, Olivia Gaviola-Remotigue and Francisco Remotigue, the Mayor Tomas Osmeña repeatedly mentioned the case of Melicor. Melicor was part of the Cebu City delegation that witnessed the unveiling of the plaque that recognized Cebu City and Chula Vista City of California as sister cities. “We have plans and safeguards to ensure that all who will go to Cleveland will all return to Cebu City when we will come back after the games,” said Jakosalem. PARIS – Australian riding legend Pat Glennon, the only jockey to win a Melbourne Cup, English Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, has died aged 76 after a short illness. While Glennon – who rode his first winner aged 13 in 1941 – won two Melbourne Cups he will be forever associated with the remarkable French horse Sea Bird, regarded as perhaps the greatest flat performer of all time. Like fellow Aussie jockeys of that era Bill Williamson and Scobie Breasley Glennon decided to ply his trade in Europe after garnering his two Melbourne Cups – the first with Comic Court in 1950 which was trained by Jim Cummings, father of Cups’ king Bart. His ride on Comic Court was fortuitous as Cummings original choice, Jack Purtell, turned down the chance. In Europe Glennon rode first for Irish legend Dr Vincent O’Brien where he was crowned champion jockey in 1962 before agreeing to take a contract with the late Etienne Pollet in France. In 1965 Glennon experienced his annus mirabilis on board Sea Bird as he picked up the English Derby and then Europe’s most prestigious all-aged middle distance race the Arc de Triomphe. “He was the best horse I have ever ever seen, let alone ridden,” Glennon said at the time and Breasley concurred with his opinion.
