HOME FITNESS EQUIPMENT 7 Week Project [Junior 2014]: In collaboration with Precor, students were challenged to research and develop solutions in either the realm of technology or for the baby boomer market in terms of fitness. After collaborative class research, partnerships tackled six different projects. Hedvig and I worked on home fitness solutions.
HOW CAN WE REMOVE SOME OF THE COMMON OBSTACLES THAT BABY BOOMERS FACE WHEN IT COMES TO FITNESS?

PHASE 1 [4 Weeks]:
RESEARCH
All 13 classmates worked collaboratively on researching the inputs and outputs of personal fitness, particularly as they pertain to the baby boomer demographic, as well as emerging technologies within the fitness industry and beyond. Of the breadth and depth of research conducted, my partner and I chose to highlight the key areas selected that most heavily influenced our future concept development. Technology and motivation, health and wellness, habit formation, workout location, differences in motivational behaviors, and baby boomer culture all play in to the conceptualization of home gym equipment.

HOW CAN WE INCORPORATE THE MOST INNOVATIVE AND SUCCESSFUL SOLUTIONS ON THE MARKET INTO ONE HOLISTIC HOME GYM EXPERIENCE WHILE ADHERING TO PRECOR BRAND GUIDELINES?
Precor’s main competitor, Life Fitness presents a successful holistic home strength solution with many of the same components, but lacking in a suitable storage solution.

Donna was chosen among many boomers interviewed.
She is a wife, a mother of three, and works full time.
Her and her husband are now empty-nesters.
She has no plans of retiring any time soon.
Her fitness consists primarily of walking and running,
She’s been actively searching for other fitness solutions
PHASE 3 [1 Week]:
CONCEPT IDEATION
EXISTING PRECOR PRODUCTS HAVE A STRONG AND CONSISTENT BRAND LANGUAGE. UPHOLDING THAT BRAND IS OUR MAIN FOCUS FOR SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT.

PHASE 4 [1 Week]:
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Home Base is a minimal and compact home strength system. It houses 14 pieces of equipment with a wide range of functions to promote lifelong strength and wellness. The design is tailored to fit the needs of people from a wide range of fitness backgrounds, and continue to grow and adapt with the user. The mirror acts as an interface when approached, which was further developed by Hedvig von Beetzen.
Exercise Ball Floor Mat & Resistance Bands Kettlebells & Dumbbells Medicine Balls Balance Board
ADJUSTABLE KETTLEBELLS Hollow core and top dial allow user to adjust the weight without changing the shape
BALANCE BOARD Square shaped platform help orient user and provide more stability
EXERCISE BALL
MEDICINE BALLS An average sized 24 ribbed exercise ball drove the overall shape of home base, aiming for max space efficiency.
Simple color indications of light to dark help intuitively direct the user to the correct weight.
EXERCISE MAT Your standard 1/4 memory foam exercise mat with curves mimicking the precor logo.
RESISTANCE BANDS Fabric covered resistance bands prevent snapping and use the same light to dark color indication for levels of resistance.
ADJUSTABLE DUMBBELLS Bow flex select-tech technology is replicate but with Precor styling.
COOKWARE DEVELOPMENT 2 Week Project [Sophomore 2013]: With the objective of exploring styrene plastic and its abilities and limitations, rudimentary interchangeable spatulas were developed. With a heightened form language and curiosity in alternative materials, the project was further developed.
HOW CAN REDESIGNED COOKWARE LIMIT THE CYCLE OF OVER-CONSUMPTION AND WASTE?

STUDYING FORM Through the study of rectilinear and curvilinear forms and the relationships between elements, I gained an understanding of the weight of every decision in design. Every line, shape, connection, and direction creates a conversation between elements that defines the result; a mood, feeling, function, and spatial connection communicated to the user.

The form language was lost in the previous model with the overuse of color. Using black plastic defined the form and allowed for more subtle color indications. Seven spatula heads have been developed, working with the same interchangeable handle. This minimizes wasted space as well as encourages brand loyalty so as to influence the behavior of purchasing recycled and interchangeable plastic parts that reduce overall material use.

PLYWOOD FURNITURE 2 Week Project [Sophomore 2013]: With a half sheet of plywood in hand, 24 students sought out to furnish, decorate, and problem solve for 24 non-profits in our area. With its passion to make the outdoors accessible to hundreds of people with disabilities in the Seattle area, I was inspired to work with Outdoors for All. Their needs were in three areas: compact outdoor seating and tables, recumbent bike storage, and window dressings for the many unfinished offices. With the wood constraints, I sought out to solve the problem of outdoor seating.

MAXIMIZING MATERIAL POTENTIAL With only a 4’ x 4’, half sheet of plywood, it was essential to achieve an efficient flat-pack design in order to maximize the amount of chairs that could be produced.

Four flat-pack plywood stools fit in the one carrying box. The seat top stays within frame while stored with the connection of a stainless steel rim and neodymium magnets holding it in place. Magnets on the base of the seat hold the frame at its most sturdy position, an equilateral triangle.
REMADE 5 Week Project [Junior 2013]: ReMade is an annual collaboration between Western Washington University Industrial Design and Ideal - Carefully Curated Goods, in Bellingham, WA. Students produce a small production run of 20 products to be sold at Ideal’s downtown design boutique. As a celebration of recycling and an avenue to bring awareness to environmental degradation driven by consumption, recycled materials are upcycled to increase value and desirability.

RESPONSIBLE DESIGN Vinyl fabrics are particularly harmful, as the by-product of its degradation is dioxin, a cancer-causing compound and nasty addition to our biosphere. The life cycle of all of the product inputs is explored below, from extraction up until the sale at ReMade. Okala principles were the project’s foundation (right).

HOW CAN 30 STRONG MINDED DESIGNERS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A SINGLE SUCCESSFUL PRODUCT LAUNCH?
I thrive with opportunities to bring people together and create something greater than the sum of its parts. With 30 peers working together outside of class, our IDSA student chapter pushed the limits of living hinge plywood in to a family of products. After months of dedication, over 200 products were sold, raising over $4,000 to pay for student trips this spring. In addition to raising funds, we brought awareness to the importance and power of industrial design to the community around us.

I grew up with spatula in hand, mixing ingredients and making messes. An entrepreneurial venture from early high school, Luscious Vicious Cakery has since grown in to a small home wedding cake and cupcake business. I learned from a young age that delicious food makes people happy, and beautiful food makes them even happier.
