Self-guided Walks

Southern Ocean Lodge is set among the rugged coastal wilderness of Hanson Bay, where the powerful swells roll in from Antarctica to crash against the limestone cliffs and make landfall on the sandy shore. In contrast, the inland vista is a sea of green, blessedly undeveloped hills, rolling into the distance. A series of hiking trails commences from the lodge doorstep, inviting keen walkers to explore the stunning environs at leisure.

Clifftop Walk

Step out from the lodge’s doorstep and venture along the limestone cliffs of Hanson Bay. This easy walk affords a bird’s eye view of the waves crashing along the coastline below. Take a moment to look out across the ocean and realise the next stop is Antarctica!

Hanson Bay Beach

Wander along the lodge’s raised boardwalk and onto the windswept shore of Hanson Bay. Spot sea birds scuttling along the sand, pass sea caves sprouting fossilised tree trunks and discover the pristine cove of Hanson Bay Beach where a cool dip is optional.

Lodge to Gate

Popular for an early morning run or post-lunch walk off, follow the sealed, undulating road from the lodge to the main entry gate. Alternatively, hop on one of the lodge’s ebikes and pedal along the driveway for some fun on two wheels.
