YoU or YoUr blaDDer? Urinary incontinence is a very common problem. Around 4 out of 10 women will be affected by it at some time in their lives. Our team of consultant gynaecologists explain the different types of incontinence problems and treatments available. it’s not surprising that many people tend to park the issue of incontinence at the back of their minds. it can be a tricky and embarrassing subject. many muddle through, believing that bladder problems just come with the territory as we get older and there’s nothing anyone can do. for most people, a normal frequency for passing urine is about 6-8 times over a full 24-hour period. at night, you shouldn’t need to get up more than once. so if you’re finding your bladder more demanding than this, please read on. incontinence affects different people in different ways. the most common types are: Stress incontinence: this is frequently caused by a weakness in the pelvic floor muscles which support the bladder outlet. this can often be as a result of childbirth. some women suffer stress leakage after their first vaginal birth. activities such as running, laughing, coughing and jumping can set the alarm bells ringing. sadly, this fear of leakage can affect all parts of your life, from exercise and fun, to dancing and sex. Urge incontinence: some people find themselves gripped by a sudden urge to pass urine, which can result in leakage before you make it to the toilet. this is because the bladder muscle is contracting too early and you have less control. this can occur at any age but it is more common in later years. Mixed incontinence: it is a combination of stress and urge incontinence.

Other symptoms. sufferers find that they are altering their normal life patterns, drinking less fluid, worrying about toilets and going more often. many people who suffer from bladder problems may

also have a prolapse (dropping) of the vagina, with or without additional prolapse of the womb (uterus), as well as leakages. other symptoms include feeling or seeing a bulge, heaviness or dragging in the vagina, vaginal looseness during sex, cystitis, difficulty in passing urine and passing a motion, which sometimes needs manual help. these are symptoms that your gp should be told about – particularly when, for most people, effective treatment is accessible.

A better future. once you’ve been to see your gp, congratulations! You’ll have made a very positive step towards a much more promising future. the first step of your treatment is a consultation. You’ll be asked a few simple questions about yourself and your lifestyle. this is usually followed by an internal vaginal examination (a bit like a smear). samples of your urine would also be taken for testing, and you will be asked to keep a diary for three days detailing your liquid intake and trips to the toilet. Depending on the results of the investigations, a tailored plan will be recommended of which might include: Focusing on your lifestyle: assessing areas like your physical activities, fluid intake, reducing caffeine and weight loss (if applicable). Surgical and physical therapies: our gynaecological Units are run by a multi-disciplinary team of consultants and health professionals who are experienced in this field. our team of consultant gynaecologists work closely with our women’s health physiotherapists, offering a wide range of surgical and therapeutic services. many also treat overactive bladder, chronic pelvic pain and male continence problems. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, your consultant will advise on the treatment that is right for you of which may include surgery or physical therapies such as bladder training, pelvic floor exercises or muscle stimulation. Drug therapies: if you have an overactive bladder, there are prescription drugs available from your gp or consultant that can help to calm it down. sometimes, they may be used together with vaginal oestrogen (female hormone), tablets or cream.

With summer pretty much in the bag it’s almost time to pack away the summer shorts and t-shirts. We didn’t get much of a summer admittedly but as I sit here typing in late August the sun in the sky blazing away is almost making me forget the rainy misery of June. Forget the weather though – the fabulous London Olympics surely brightened up everyone’s summer with the fantastic, venues, spectacular shows and awesome performance of Team GB. Tens of thousands of us made the short trip up to East London to share in the revelry including East Kent Lifestyle’s Jaillan Yehia who took some stunning shots of proceedings to remind us all of a spectacular British games (p71). We also go out and about in Canterbury and report back the best of what they’ve got offer, from how to see the city, where to eat, where to stay and where to party! Loveable cockney rogue Ray Winstone hits the big screen this month with Nick Love’s take on the 70’s classic “The Sweeney” as we take a look back over the career of one of Britain’s best loved actors. Foodie Heaven at the Broadstairs Food Festival Once again the historic coastal town of Broadstairs will be hosting its annual celebration of food in a three day food festival to be held at Victoria Gardens and along Victoria Parade at Broadstairs Promenade from 5th-7th October. The Broadstairs Food Festival is run and managed as a community interest company (CIC), by a board of local people. The BFF is the largest festival of its kind in the south east of England. With local producers, growers, restaurants, bars and food retailers firmly at its heart, it is a showcase of the fantastic food, drink and hospitality to be found in Kent and the surrounding counties. As well as over 100 stallholders there will also be food demonstrations from prominent local food experts including the award winning Dev Biswal from The Ambrette in Margate creating glorious dishes from his native India, fresh fish and seafood dishes from The Minnis, catch of the day from Eddie Gilbert’s, and freshly cooked tapas from Albarino. This non-profit making organization has been created by local people to support the tourism economy in Broadstairs and to create interest in the wealth of excellent food available locally and throughout Kent. LOCAL ARTISTS REQUIRED FOR TURNER EXHIBITION! This summer, Turner Contemporary is asking Kentbased artists, craftspeople and gallery visitors to help create an extraordinary newly commissioned artwork for its Sunley Gallery. From Friday 14 September to 24 March 2013, Brazilian artist Maria Nepomuceno’s exuberant installation Tempo para Respirar (Breathing Time) will fill the dramatic double-height Sunley Gallery. This new work, Nepomuceno’s most ambitious to date, brings the energy and colour of Brazil, with its many cultures, colourful carnivals, and dramatic rainforests, into Turner Contemporary’s beautiful space overlooking Margate seafront. Inspired by traditional South American craft techniques, Nepomuceno weaves straw, strings and piles beads, and sews brightly-coloured ropes into draping coils and flower-like forms. Visitors can sit amidst the work’s many colours and textures, hearing the sounds 10

of Nepomuceno’s imaginary universe emerging from the shapes around them, or relax in a hammock looking out to sea. The work will continue to grow under the care of the Maria Nepomuceno Studio Group, volunteer artists and craftspeople who will help the artist create her work during her visit this autumn. There are a number of ways opportunities for visitors, artists and craftspeople to get involved including workshops run by Maria, and invites to local artists and craftspersons to join Maria’s Studio Group. Participants will meet Maria and learn about her work and techniques, help create elements of the commission and become caretakers of the work after Nepomuceno leaves Margate. New Autumn Wedding Fair at Bluewater

There will be screams of delight rather than fright this autumn half-term when Kent Life opens its doors for a Halloween Spooktacular, 27 to 31 October from 10am. Kent Life is a fun and safe place for youngsters to go trick or treating (between 4 and 6pm), knocking on the doors of this family-friendly attraction’s historic homes to see who’s lurking behind them. There are sweets for every child who dares to wake the residents! Join the hunt for wooden ghosts hidden around the grounds and win a yummy treat if you find them all! THE PINES CALYX – CHALKING UP A HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE St. Margaret’s Bay, nestled in the White Cliffs of Dover, is one of the gems of East Kent and hidden away just 100 yards from the beach is the Pines Garden, home to one of Kent’s most unusual modern buildings – the ‘naturally inspiring’ Pines Calyx. The building showcases a fusion of historic construction techniques and 21st century technologies, winning a clutch of architectural awards since its completion in 2006. This summer the building further bolstered its environmental credentials with a range of renewable energy generation technologies leading to the this becoming the first commercial building in the UK to be a net energy exporter (supplying surplus heat and electricity to adjoining buildings). The Calyx’s design elements take their inspiration from nature’s own designs, with its rammed chalk walls, catalan vaulted ceilings, natural ventilation through an earth tube and a sophisticated ‘virtual daylight’ lighting system. 12

This month I am paying a visit to what many claim to be Britain’s most sustainable building.

So, environmentally, it certainly touches the parts that many other buildings often fail to reach whilst the close nature approach leads to a positively healthy and invigorating internal environment, perfect for the building’s many and varied uses. And what happens here? The Calyx was created by the Bay Trust as a low carbon venue from which to run its environmental educational programmes and courses (my article in the May/June issue covering the other half of the Trust’s activities at Rippledown Environmental Education Centre, three miles away in Ringwould). The building is also regularly hired out for conferences, weddings, arts events and many other celebrations. Its iconic design alongside its stunning setting, nestled into the surrounding chalk grassland, has resulted in the Calyx becoming a favourite with many trainers and event organisers alongside a growing flow of wedding couples.. VISITING THE PINES CALYX There is a nearby ‘trial dome’ (as the name suggested, where the building design was initially trialled) enabling all Pines Garden

visitors to appreciate how the building was constructed, and on regular occasions throughout the year the building’s doors are open to the general public. So now’s the time to come and discover a grand design that fully fits in with nature’s grand design! There are two Open Weekends this autumn – 13/14th Oct &17/18th Nov, and if you’re thinking about having an event of your own then on Sunday 21st October there will be team members on hand to share with you all the fun and creative uses the building and surrounding 6 acres of garden provide for private functions – from christenings right through to golden wedding parties – along with some sumptuous culinary options from the Bay Trust’s team of chefs, all passionate about making our low carbon sustainable future taste as good as it looks! Often referred to as “The Jewel in Thanet’s Crown” Broadstairs has managed to escape the reputation batterings that its neighbouring towns of Margate and Ramsgate have suffered in recent years. Although both towns have enjoyed a renaissance of sorts over the past few years it is still Broadstairs which is seen as the genteel cousin of the Thanet triumvirate. The town has been compared to a Cornish fishing village and it’s not hard to see why, with its quaint 17th & 18th century fisherman’s cottages leading down to the magnificent Viking Bay Beach. The beach is just one of seven in the town and the focal point of any sunny day in Broadstairs. Famous for the frequent visits of Charles Dickens who wrote “You cannot think how delightful and fresh the place is and how good the walks”, Dickens often stayed at Bleak House and the Albion Hotel and wrote many of his best loved works whilst here including Nicholas Nickelby, David Copperfield, Barnaby Rudge and Oliver Twist. Dickens legacy is still felt and celebrated during the annual “Dickens Week Festival” in June including Victorian country

fairs, festival nights, parades and a “Dickensian Bathing Party” no less! The town centre itself is full of independent businesses, guest houses, restaurants and pubs and on a nice day one can enjoy a stroll down to the immaculate promenade, replete with a bandstand which, as a rarity in this day and age, is often packed to the rafters with punters enjoying live performances from a wide variety of talent. From brass bands to tribute bands to choral groups to folk music the bandstand is active throughout the year and in an idyllic setting just set back from the cliffs overlooking the sandy bay. There are some fine restaurants in the town from the sublime tapas at Albarino and Peens to the original (and still the best) Italian fayre at Osteria Posillipo on Albion Street to the splendidly superb seafood specials at the Tartar Frigate at the bottom of Harbour Street opposite the entrance to the main sands (see review page 66).

For those wishing to visit the town I can heartily recommend The Royal Albion Hotel or for those who like the more intimate touch it is hard to hold a candle to the home comforts and delightful breakfasts on offer at Belvidere Place B&B. Anyone wishing to cater for themselves could do a lot worse than hiring one of the numerous flint faced, stone built fishermans cottages and houses offered out for rent throughout the year. As I write this Broadstairs is in the midst of its annual, and ever popular August, “Folk Week” where thousands of locals and visitors descend upon the town for a week long celebration of folk music, dance, storytelling, theatre, events and concerts taking place all over town. The atmosphere is infectious, the alcohol plentiful and the town comes alive with good cheer, good beer and fine song! Come join us… 15

Soul Invasion The East Kent town of Margate came alive for its tenth annual Soul Weekend this August. Crowds gathered in the streets and bars to enjoy live music from an eclectic group of DJs and live acts. The Southeast’s biggest soul music festival certainly delivered and provided an entertaining weekend for the whole family.

The Soul Weekend began ten years ago when DJ Micky B and Eli Thompson of the Westcoast Bar decided to bring their love of soul music to their community. That Carnival Sunday they set up their decks on Fort Hill and played a mix of soul motown, disco and rare grooves. Each year the demand for their soul music grew until they were presented with the opportunity to create a weekend’s worth of entertainment, which would include the Carnival. Now on the first weekend of August each year the free festival takes place. This year’s weekend kicked off on Friday night with acts including Chris Bangs, from the underground dance scene, Nick Aravis, a motown enthusiast and Max K from North Germany. DJ’s performed into the early hours of Saturday morning.

On Saturday afternoon the party continued. At the Piazza there was a live broadcast on Solar Radio with DJ James Anthony. The acts that followed included Cool Million and Westcoast Soulstars, Eli and Janine who sung covers as well as their own releases. Additional DJs performed at the Westcoast that afternoon, including Pete Colins and Jon and Messy. The second evening of music featured yet more impressive acts, like local Robbie Styles, who has been part of the festival from the start, Derrick Patterson and Jazzbod who pumped out jazz funk and fusion into the night. The final day of the weekend was marked by the carnival celebrations moving along the seafront on Sunday afternoon. An array of colours and dancing performers came through the town with their decorated floats.

The streets were lined with onlookers and children waving flags. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the warm sun put everyone in a good mood to enjoy the festivities. The atmosphere was buzzing and the acts kept coming through. Rokka began the afternoon’s music with Derrick Patterson, a well-respected dance DJ who mixed classic soul with modern dance music. The weekend was an ideal opportunity for Margate to showcase the great bars, cafes and outside spaces that it has to offer. The event took place across 7 venues in the town including The Lighthouse Bar, The Westcoast and The Britannia. The Soul Weekend was a great success for Margate and fun for all those who attended the event. Bring on next year! 17

Perry Wood is a very special ancient woodland, lying within the Selling and Chilham parishes. Designated as a Local Wildlife Site and owned by Swale Borough Council, it covers 148 acres (60 hectares) of land used mostly for recreation and leisure pursuits, wildlife conservation and scientific research. The views are stunning and offer a remarkable perspective on this part of the Kent Downs. The high spot, called The Mount, is the site of an 18th century semaphore tower used as part of a signalling chain, relaying important military messages from London to the Kent ports during the Napoleonic wars. Before the invention of the electric telegraph, passing messages this way was the fastest method of sending a long-distance message. There were chains of semaphore stations across the country – this one stands on the London to Deal line. Sadly, the original structure no longer exists, but where it once stood you'll find a wooden lookout tower known locally as The Pulpit, which at 504ft above sea level, provides spectacular views in all directions.

The route starts from the car park – known locally as The Drawing Room or Bandstand - and offers a wide range of habitats to explore, Perry Wood has jutting mounds of sand and heathland in a lovely mixed wood, with springs and streams, boggy areas, sandpits, magnificent rhododendron plantations .and chestnut coppices, folded into the rolling chalk of the Downs. Woodland paths signed by carved fingerposts open onto tracks winding through arable fields, cattle pasture and estate parkland, before travelling along hedge-lined country lanes that lead to historic villages, with the added bonus of panoramic views across some of the finest countryside in East Kent.

On your way you’ll pass carved interpretive features illustrating local flora and fauna, such as the badger, fly agaric, beech, Scots pine, birch, rowan, fox, holly and ivy, sweet chestnut, owl, heather and oak. Go around the side of Windmill Hill (where a 16th century mill once stood), and you’ll come upon The Rose and Crown pub, where you can stop for refreshments before picking up the path again. From Perry Woods the route takes you along winding narrow lanes towards Shottenden, past the site of the old Shottenden Mill, an Iron Age earthworks. Lining the way are historic houses, isolated cottages and a variety of converted farm buildings, including oast-houses. Until recently, this area was at the heart of the brewing

Nearby is the picturesque hill village of Chilham, boasting a beautiful square enclosed by fine medieval houses. Visitors from around the world browse the gift shops and post office, enjoy cream teas or tuck into pub lunches in this quintessentially English village made famous in a number of feature films and period television dramas over the years. Off the square you’ll find the 15th century parish church at the centre of a pretty churchyard, believed to be the burial place of the martyr Thomas Becket, after his murder by King Henry II’s knights in Canterbury Cathedral, on 29 December, 1170. Opposite stands the grand gated entrance to Chilham Castle - a spectacular Jacobean mansion built on the site of a ruined Norman castle, surrounded by beautiful gardens that are occasionally open to the public. Bargain hunters will find nearby Bagham Antiques Barn irresistible, while thirsty travellers can tickle their taste buds testing strong home-made cider and other fresh produce at Badger's Hill Farm and Cider. 19

The Powell COTTON MUSEUM THE Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex House and Gardens in Birchington is a world-class collection of 19th century natural history and ethnography from Africa and Asia, oriental fine arts, ceramics, weaponry and local archaeology. Major Powell-Cotton was a pioneer in the use of the diorama to display mounted mammals in representations of their natural habitats. The Powell-Cotton Museum natural history dioramas are outstanding examples, unique to the UK, stunning for their size, quality and imagery. Today they still excite the imagination of young and old alike. Major Powell-Cotton died in 1940 and couldn't know that his collection would one day help the Smithsonian Institution and the British Museum of Natural History - or that his trophies would help resurrect lost and endangered species. DNA collected from the Powell-Cotton Museum's quagga specimens helped confirm a relationship with the more common Cape Mountain zebra, which strongly resembles the quagga. This led to a breeding program that has helped stabilise populations of the Cape Mountain zebra. In the 1990s, genetic material was taken from the museum's

giant sable and the sable antelope skins. The DNA allowed the South African researchers to start a breeding program to save the critically endangered Giant Sable from extinction. Our wheelie bin store is made from Jakcured softwood, tongue and groove effect boards and has an internal galvanized steel frame for extra strength. The store is designed for two wheelie bins, with two front hinged doors and two hinged lids which open upwards to allow access to the bins, whilst they are inside the store. Each lid has a chain that can be attached to the wheelie bin lid, so as the store lid is lifted it automatically raises the bin lid as well, for easy use. ire fireplaces The season ‘of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ is now upon us, the nights are drawing in and our thoughts turn to cosy, warm fires. Nothing beats the ambience of a large open log fire crackling away on a cold winter’s night, with the wind howling and rattling the doors and windows. Unfortunately there are many downsides to such a scene. Dust and dirt, very low efficiency, draft, a glowing face but a freezing back, high fuel usage in the days of global warming, sparks and fire risk and there is also the danger of leaving a fire unattended when you retire to bed. The answer is simple and just as good to look at: open the fire up, keep the surround or just a shelf and install an efficient heating appliance. A traditional look can be achieved by keeping the stone surround, yet the stove (in this case a Burley Holywell) still looks in keeping.

Whilst in this second example we show how keeping it simple and open can make the room feel larger and lighter. For those with no suitable chimney, an insulated stainless steel chimney can often be installed either up through the house or, if against an external wall, up the outside of the building. These chimneys are usually only about 200mm (8”) diameter and can be painted if required. With an open plan room the simple tall stove look can be employed without a traditional British Chimney breast, (see picture 3) though a mock one could be constructed in plasterboard if preferred.

Are there many advantages in using a wood or coal stove over an open fire? Well the answer to that one is a resounding YES. With rising fuel costs and the need to be eco friendly lets first look at efficiency, the amount of heat you will get to the amount of fuel you have to burn.

03 IN VERY ROUGH TERMS ONE CAN SAY;A large open fire 900mm by 900mm and above would be less then 5% efficient. i.e. 95 % of the heat would go up the chimney or you get 5p’s worth of heat for every pound you spend. A small open fire (max 450mm wide) rises to about 20% or just 20p of heat for every pound you spend. With a modern wood stove with a glass door, you immediately stop vast amounts of heat from going up the chimney as only the air required for combustion is let from the room to the stove. You start to get a sensible 80p’s worth of heat for very £ 1 you spend. The newest stove on the market from Burley Appliances (Designed in Kent with patented T3 technology) achieves an astounding 90% efficiency. Yes that really is about 18 times better than a large open fire. Wouldn’t you like to cut your fuel bill by 95%? You also get a much cleaner less polluting burn with a controlled combustion in a closed stove. Some stoves can burn wood in smokeless zones, with only a slight loss of efficiency. Always check with you local council if you are in a smokeless zone. If you are, you must either use smokeless fuel or an appliance certified to burn ordinary coal or wood, DEFRA approved.

When choosing your appliance look for large windows so you can see the flames, choose a multifuel only if you want to burn coal, air that can be brought in directly from outside so you do not need a drafty vent in the room, and from a reputable manufacturer and supplier. This is one market where British is definitely best and world beating. We export a surprising number of wood stoves to Europe, Japan and America. Finally a word of caution, there is a huge misnomer that gas appliances can be dangerous and produce deadly gas carbon monoxide, but wood or coal open fires or stoves don’t and are safe. Nothing could be further from the truth. To install a gas appliance the installer must be GasSafe registered, to install an open fire, stove, chimney or line an existing chimney the installer must be HETAS registered and better still NACE registered as well. The reason, even a well designed appliance, certified to CE standards produces around 500 times more carbon monoxide than a gas appliance, and an open fire even more. You do require a properly installed, checked and if necessary lined chimney, air ventilation, and have your chimney swept at least annually.

Golf|Live AT LONDON GOLF CLUB, KENT Love it or hate it, the ancient game of golf in the UK is on the up, and we joined the pros and celebrities at The London Club, Kent for GOLF LIVE, in their pursuit of bringing their skills and enthusiasm for the enjoyment of the masses. You may be thinking “Golf - not my cup of tea”, but read on and you may surprise yourself or be encouraged to steer your offspring on a path to a hidden talent…

It was Winston Churchill who famously described golf as “a good walk, spoiled…”, but maybe he would have taken a different view had he been given the opportunity of enjoying the exploits of the GOLF LIVE team of golf legends, pros, coaches and celebrities, led by former winning Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie. The team comprised of none other than the legendary Gary Player, 9 time major winner, keen amateur golfers DJ Chris Evans and DJ Spoony, Top Pros, Alison Nicholas, Melissa Reid, Oli Fisher and many others in a celebration of one of Britain’s oldest sports. The setting is perfect for such an event. The London Club course boasts some of the most pictureresque corners of Kent’s countryside - and that’s saying something! The temporary stands and clubhouse overlooked the 1st, 10th and 18th holes with perfectly manicured greens and fairways, deep bunkers of golden sand and a magnificent lake which surprisingly featured two wallowing stone hippos peering from the surface. There are few pastimes that can claim to span the ages, but few could argue that golf achieves that feat….borne out at this event by 5 year old spectator Jaden, who beat the pros at their own game in a chipping challenge, whilst 76 year old golf legend, Gary Player effortlessly produced a hole-in-one at the 140 yard Par 3 “Nearest the Pin” challenge to the delight of the watching gallery. Such golden

moments are rare indeed, but the day just seemed to serve up special moments as if they were the norm.

The whole day was a joy. Sure, I like golf, but I’m no fanatic and although GOLF LIVE’S aim was to try to improve the amateur golfers’ game, it seemed to reach out to anyone with a sense of fun and spirit of having a go…and I would challenge even the fiercest golf critic not to have enjoyed the entertainment on offer, and have caught a little “golf bug”.

The day was capped off with a World Record attempt for the fastest ever round of golf. Now consider this, an average round of golf lasts 3-4 hours..the World Record, set by a group of Americans is 7 minutes 43 seconds! Our Pros here didn’t quite manage that ridiculously challenging time, but did beat the current UK record by achieving a time just a shade under 11 minutes…we won’t say how it was done but it was very clever and took an abundance of golfing skill by the team that took part....just a brilliant way to end a perfect day.

The day started with a complimentary bucks fizz, and there were excellent food and beverages available throughout the day – including the Jamie Oliver Stall serving up such culinary delights as Pork Goulash (delicious), Pork & Apple or Beef Hash sarnies and Veggie Stew - there were no cardboard hamburgers here! The entertainment kept coming, from demonstrations by 2010 World Long Driving Champion Joe Miller to free golf lessons on the driving range, chipping and putting greens. You could try out the latest golf equipment, watch coaching demos with top golf teacher Pete Cowen, stroll the course alongside the stars for a two hole Pro Am and try out the Virtual Golf challenge. We had some fun browsing round the variety of stalls which included a close up look at the famous Ryder Cup, saw an amazing impromptu tumbling routine across the 18th green by Carly Booth and an unparalleled master class from the

minutes is all it took for Blur tickets to sell out at Margate’s historic Winter Gardens when they announced the Gardens as one of the four warm – up venues for the band before they headline a concert being held at London's Hyde Park to celebrate the end of the Olympic Games in August. Dedicated fans camped out over night to get hold of tickets to see the Brit pop legends.

guitar on the stage and empty his pint of beer over it. Damon Albarn sheepishly asked if he was OK and gave him a hug, whilst the audience chanted ‘Graham!’. Luckily his mood didn’t last long and commenced into ‘Caramel’ a fan favourite from the album ‘13’ which has only been played a handful of times live. ‘Song 2’ obviously brought the house down, plastic cups went flying through the air and a mass-mosh at front of the stage enused only brought to stand still when ‘No Distance Left to Run’ followed, the crowd started to sway and the atmosphere turned electric, bringing goose bumps to the 1900 people lucky enough to get tickets for this intimate evening. The band left the stage for a short break leaving the audience tense and restless and demanding more. Blur came back on with new song ‘Under the Westway’, Damon adding "This is a new one, we don't do that many!” Closing with 'The Universal' the crowd united to sing along with Damon as he looked out to the Margate fans in appreciation. Cigarette lighters were replaced by the swaying glow of mobile phones bringing an amazing ending to such a nostalgic night. Being a lifelong Blur fan I may be slightly biased but the atmosphere at the Winter Gardens was magical. I’m sure it’s an evening that everyone who attended will remember for a long time. Blur certainly proved they hadn’t lost ‘it’ and still played perfectly together just as they did back in the day.

On 1st August the doors opened at 6pm to the waiting crowd outside the seaside venue. Support on the evening came from ‘The Bots’ a teenage two-piece from America who warmed up the crowd before the main act came onto stage. As the theatre filled and the lights went down, excitement filled the room as ‘Girls & Boys’ rang out around the 100 year old auditorium. The crowd went wild and sang along to every word bouncing in time to the music. They followed up with ‘London Loves’, ‘Coffee and TV’ and of course ‘Country House’ and ‘Park life’. OR YOU CAN JUST GET IT DONE PROPERLY AT A STUDIO, ONE OF THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY SITS IN OUR VERY OWN FOLKESTONE! Hidden Track Studios is owned and run by Oz Craggs based in The Creative Quarter in Folkestone situated just behind The Quarterhouse itself! I’ve known Oz for a long time, he taught me to play guitar when I was about 15 and he was learning the ropes at Mark One Music in Deal, it seems like a lifetime ago when I visited him this week to learn about how he’s now his own boss. “It’s not the kind of thing that just happens overnight. I remember taking tape decks apart and making my own little machines. I managed to get my hands on some music software and used my Dad’s PC. I always wanted a studio.” The studio came about from a long four years but Oz says it was all made possible by local partnerships and schemes, telling him that it was possible and that he could

do it. The Gateway Partnership scheme provided financial support, business advice and connections all for budding entrepreneurs who simply wanted to make something of themselves. “It took over four years to get the studio. As you can imagine they needed to check the building was suitable for such loud noises. I didn’t waste any time though, I got they keys and after 6 days I had an album!” Oz has even recorded his own stuff. He is part of the band Feed The Rhino (not for the faint of heart). Their music is loud, aggressive and incredible so make sure you check them out. Their latest album The Burning Sons has just come out and Oz can proudly say that he cowrote, produced and released it. He is quick to point out there are loads more people involved!

“The thing about me is that if you come down to my studio I will become a member of your band for the duration. I will help you in any way I can and if something is poor I will tell you straight. Some people don’t like it but it works for me. I don’t care if you’re rock, pop, hip-hop or metal, I am here to help make you sound the best you can be.” It is hard to argue. As I write this Oz’s track for Hildemay is record of the week on Radio 1 and he hasn’t even mastered it yet. He produced Kent act Audioshock’s song which was also record of the week. Bad boy Ray Winstone is a man loved by the nation. Famous for his gruff voice and tough guy roles, he has starred in some of the most iconic films of the last 30 years. He is now set to revolutionise 70’s series The Sweeney in his newest film of the same name, working alongside rapper/singer songwriter Plan B. Let us learn more about this gritty actor’s road to success. Ray was born in Hackney and was brought up on a council estate in Enfield. As a troublesome schoolboy his teachers considered him a bad influence to his peers and eventually he left school with just a single CSE in Drama.

Nevertheless, the young Winstone showed talent outside the classroom and chose to channel his energy and enthusiasm into boxing. At the age of 12 he joined Repton Amateur Boxing Club and was awarded Schoolboy Champion three times. Over the next ten years he won over 80 medals and trophies.

The young actor went on to star in numerous television shows including the cult adventure series Robin of Sherwood which aired in 1984. He also appeared in Between the Lines, Ghostbusters of East Finchley and Births, Marriages and Deaths.

When I was younger I could never see myself as being an actor as I didn’t fit the mould…

Winstone showed an early affinity to acting. His father, a greengrocer, would take him to the cinema every Wednesday afternoon where he was inspired by stars on the big screen. He cites his major influences to include John Wayne, James Cagney and Edward Robinson. Ray went on to study acting at Corona Stage Academy Hammersmith, with the financial support of his mother’s friend, who was a drama teacher. One of his first appearances was on stage in a production of Emil and the Detectives, where he played a Cockney newspaper seller.

Interestingly, Winstone made his TV debut on the very show that his latest film is based on. In the late 1970’s The Sweeney was a very popular police series, which depicted a darker side of the Flying Squad, one entangled in corruption and bribery. In the ‘Loving Arms’ episode, Ray Winstone was cast in a minor role as an unnamed thug. This time round Ray will be taking the leading role. From one brawler to another, Ray was then depicted as a young offender in the BBC play production of Scum. The hard-hitting and

Ray’s success blossomed as he began taking the limelight on the big screen. In 2000 he starred alongside Jude Law in Love, Honour and Obey, where he played the leader of a group of criminals. That same year Winstone snagged the lead role in Sexy Beast. Ray played Gal Dove, a retired thief living the life of leisure, who is dragged back to his former ways for ‘one last job’. His role in this psychological exploration of gangsters brought him great acclaim from both UK and International audiences. In 2003 Ray made a move away from his typical gangster castings, by starring in the ITV television series of Henry VIII. He played England’s most notorious monarch, Henry VIII, a role which he particularly enjoyed. The following year Winstone starred in King Arthur playing Arthur’s knight Bors. Three years later Ray took another original role in Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary’s Beowulf. In the American fantasy film, adapted from the old English poem, the great warrior Beowulf was played by Winstone. During an interview with Parkinson, Ray expressed his love for this old English fable and the way the story could make your imagination run wild. Although

he was used to playing a lot of ‘hard’ men, he explained:

“When I did the war zone…it hurt to do that, it made me think how lightly I took the other films.” Winstone’s passion for his work comes across clearly, he sees acting as a type of education and therapy for the soul.

“The role was done for me in a way, because you can’t beat the image of this big bald guy looming out of a windy graveyard by the marshes. You don’t know if he’s human, the Creature from the Black Lagoon or Frankenstein’s monster. It frightened the life out of me as a kid.”

Ray was not always optimistic about his success claiming: “When I was younger I could never see myself as being an actor as I didn’t fit the mould…I didn’t feel accepted, but I’ve met too many good people to stay like that.” Winstone believes he has been lucky to get where he has not being “the fittest or most beautiful man”. Yet it’s clear that his talent and character have shone through. Although well known for his more serious and heavy roles – in particular his role as violent drunk husband of Kathy Burke’s Valerie in Gary Oldman’s BAFTA award winning directorial debut Nil be Mouth, the star has appeared in more light-hearted productions. He had a comedy part in Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence and played the romantic lead in Fanny and Elvis. In another complete change of pace Winstone provided the voice of Mr Beaver in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. More recently, Ray started to direct and produce his own films; he set up Size 9 and Flicks production companies with his agent Michael Wiggs. Together they directed She’s Gone, where Winstone played a businessman whose daughter goes missing in Istanbul and Jerusalem where he took the role of poet William Blake. Last December Ray was cast in the BBC’s latest adaptation of Great Expectations as

Ray himself has three children with his wife Elaine Winstone, who he married in 1979. His daughter Jaime, 27, has taken after her father and is a successful actress. She has made a number of impressive appearances, including Made in Dagenham and Kidulthood. This year she was cast in the popular BBC series True Love, which was set here in East Kent in the seaside town of Margate. The future looks bright for Winstone as his latest film, The Sweeney, is set to be a raging success. In cinemas this September, the remake of the 70s classic will make an intense and thrilling watch. Ray will star as Detective Inspector Jack Regan alongside rapper Plan B (Ben Drew) as Detective Sergeant George Carter. Winstone is incredibly proud of his junior co-star: “It hits you right between the eyes, bang. Young Ben Drew is absolutely blinding. It’s a difficult film to do, because they’re such iconic characters so we had to throw John Thaw and Dennis Waterman’s characters away and start all over, make them our own. It’s working for us, I just pray to God it works for the audience.” Undoubtedly, the film will answer Winstone’s prayers and prove to be as iconic and popular as the original series was. We wish him every success for the future as he’s certainly earnt it.

This past July 28th marked East Kent Lifestyle’s editor’s 38th birthday, so to celebrate being notquite-40-yet we decided to take lunch at one of Canterbury’s newest and much talked about eatery, The Forge Bistro & Café. Situated about a minute’s walk from the town centre The Forge is however not the easiest place to spot so is unlikely to pick up passing trade as it might if it were actually in the town centre itself – it is tucked away on Dover street just the other side of the underpass at the top (or East) end of the high street. Given the location The Forge will have to work hard to build a reputation as a destination worth finding, and fortunately it seems to be doing just that. The Forge Bistro & Café is the brainchild of Belgian proprietor/ Chef Marleen Smet-Herman who, after years living all over the world, picking up recipes and throwing 58

dinner parties for friends and family decided that it was now or never to realise her ambition to start a place all of her own. A place where she could combine those years of foodie experience and create something unique, a veritable smorgasbord of eclectic bite sized wonderfully tasty dishes to be enjoyed by all. Marleen initially wanted to open her restaurant/café in France but after a lot of fruitless searching she decided to look this side of the pond, a decision also reached due to the fact that both her children now live and work here. Paris’s loss is evidently Canterbury’s gain as we were treated to a selection of fabulous food which would work not only in Paris or Canterbury but anywhere around the world as Marleens’s years of globe-trotting have provided her with a wonderful selection of influences to draw upon. The menu is just a simple one pager, split into “nibbles” and “Plates for 2” but offering a hugely diverse range of tempting tapas and meze style delights. We started with a “Nibble Slate”, which are great value at £12 for four nibble dishes. We enjoyed some Creole chicken

wings, polenta chips with aioli, spicy crab cakes and some Italian meatballs (we could have also opted for Greek meatballs with a minted yoghurt dip or Moroccan meatballs!). Nibbles also include falafels, blinis, frittatas and mini kebabs and at £3.50 per dish you can be sure that there will be something for everyone to enjoy in as little or as large quantities as either their stomachs or their purse strings will allow! For our follow up sharing plates we greedily tucked into some tasty mini lamb and feta burgers, a fish platter comprising lemongrass infused king prawns, more crab cakes, blinis with smoked salmon and summer vegetables. This would doubtlessly have been enough but as both myself and my partner love haloumi cheese we added a plate of haloumi with ratatouille. The food was fresh, beautifully presented and packed with flavour. I can particularly recommend the burgers – heaven in a bun! With no room for dessert (from the daily dessert specials board), instead I opted for an espresso to

wake me up from a potential food induced bout of slumber – and boy did it knock my socks off! Possibly the strongest little black cup of coffee that’s ever passed my lips it certainly did the trick! As well as offering great food to share, The Forge is also “forging” something of a reputation for its extensive wine list and fine cocktails. Front of house manager Christina is keen to make The Forge a

destination venue. I was intrigues to learn that they hold evenings where you can come along to learn how to create your own cocktails, with a Pernod Ricard bartender on hand to teach you the tricks of the trade. The bright and airy restaurant upstairs is not just for eating and with the additional of a few stylish yet suitably comfy sofas the space also makes for a fine spot to drop in to chill and relax after a hard

day’s work to enjoy fine wines and perhaps a cheeky cocktail or two – or to pop in to read the Sunday papers or a good book in stylish surroundings. 8 Lamb Cutlets – Larder Trimmed PISTACHIO CRUST 100g Dijon Mustard 100g Dark Brown Sugar 200g Pistachio Nuts - Crushed SPINACH 500g Fresh Spinach 100g Shallots – Chopped Finely 100g Watercress 2 Eggs 2 Egg Yolks 250g Butter POLENTA 250g Polenta 1ltr Milk 2tbls Chopped Fresh Rosemary 100g Shallot – Chopped Finely 100g Fresh Parmesan – Grated Salt & Pepper THE SAUCE 100g Carrot – Chopped Finely 100g Shallot – Chopped Finely 100ml White Wine 1 Ltr Lamb Stock 200ml Veal or Beef Stock 16 Black Olives – Stoned & Halved SPINACH (can be done the day before to save time)

POLENTA (can be done the day before to save time)

Blanch half of the Spinach and refresh in iced cold water, Arrange into an even layered square shape. Sauté the remaining Spinach in butter with the Shallots and Watercress, and allow to cool. When the mixture is cool, add the Eggs and Egg Yolks and spread it onto the Spinach Square, Roll the square into a sausage shape, wrap in cling film and steam for five minutes.

Bring the Milk up to a simmer with the Rosemary and Shallots to infuse. Whisk in the Polenta and cook until soft. Finish off the Polenta with the Grated Parmesan and a little Olive Oil. Season well with Salt & Pepper and spread onto a tray lined with cling film and allow to set. Once the Polenta has set, cut out 4 nice even shaped pieces and sauté in a little Olive Oil until golden & crispy on both sides.

SALT MARSH LAMB Season well with Salt & Pepper and seal in a hot pan with Butter & a little Olive Oil. Place the lamb on a tray and allow to cool. Mix the Dijon Mustard, with the Sugar and paint onto the Lamb. The glaze will act as the glue for the Crushed Pistachios thick and evenly. Place the Lamb in a medium hot oven for 6 – 8 minutes, then remove and let them rest

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month so with this in mind our regular health food columnist, Renee Maguire offers her advice for an immune system boosting diet and shares her own family’s experiences with breast cancer.

n For Nicola… 2012 marks ten years since my sister, Nicola was taken from us to Cancer. She was just 30 and too young to die. Having married her childhood sweetheart, she had up until the point of cancer, lead a full life; back packed around the world, ran the London marathon, enjoyed a successful career with Boston Scientific, and had a passion for life which was both joyous and infectious in equal measure.. Stopped in her tracks two days after her 30th birthday with the diagnosis of cancer, Nicola faced her first and last battle. Once diagnosed she set to task researching up to date cures, breakthroughs and alternative treatments. Nicola believed there was more out there so searched the internet, researching foods that could help fight cancer. She discovered studies relating to a variety of foods, one of which was apricot kernels, known for their cancer fighting B17 content. Sadly 10 years ago, apricot kernels were not sold in the UK, so she never put it to the test. 64

My frustrations lie in my lack of knowledge, if I had known then what I know now, could I have saved my sister? Today apricot kernels, spirulina, raw chocolate, reshi mushrooms, aloe vera and goji berries are part of my everyday diet; I have a spoonful of kernels in my muesli. The others I add to drinks and snacks and these are all cancer fighting foods, that boost my immune system and optimise my health.

It took four years after Nicola died for me to address my food related issues. Whilst travelling in Thailand, I discovered a restaurant dedicated to serving delicious dishes that benefit the body. It was heaven for a chef, with a passion for food, to discover a way of creating mouthwatering healthy dishes – this was my life changing moment. I knew then where my career would take me. I absorbed all I could, relating to foods that heal problems such as IBS, chronic fatigue, stress, diabetes, fertility, weight control, depression and many more. In all cases there can be health advantages to be gained from a diet rich in raw nutrition.

This time was different, we all understood the importance of foods...

After Nicola passed away, a huge gap was left in my life. Of the two most important women in my life, my Mum and my sister, Nicola was gone, not there to share our fears, joy and our successes. Through my grief, I sought solace in food, my weight ballooned and I didn’t recognise that my colds, migraines, skin outbreaks, low energy and low self-esteem were all impacted by my poor diet.

After my travels, returning to catering was not an option, I began studying the art of raw cuisine, nutritional health and particularly foods to heal and cure.

During this time she felt full of health and vitality. After the surgery, the tumour was measure at 12mm. We both believe her the shrinking during this period was aided by her diet. After this my Mother underwent a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and retained a densely nutritious diet throughout both treatments. A year on and Mum is recuperating well, enjoying her life and we are confident we have beaten cancer. The happiness is bittersweet however, had Nicola not had cancer then my life would not have lead me to this career, but I see it as a tribute to Nicola, she still impacts my life each day. It was

her inspiration that played a part in Raw Chi Food and an even bigger role in my Mumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recovery. People often ask me if I fear getting cancer, but for me, it is not about living in fear of cancer, but accepting that I have a choice. I protect myself by eating foods that impact my health in a positive way and I thank Nicola for her guidance. Nicola may have lost her fight against cancer, but for now, Mum and I fighting back for the three of us. 65

On a slightly overcast summer's afternoon the prospect of a mouth watering lunch at one of my favourite restaurants brightened my day immeasurably. One indicator of a fine restaurant is consistency, and given that head Chef Trevor Webb has been at the helm of the Frigate since it opened as a Thorley Tavern back in 1992 you can take it as read that he is doing something right. Celebrating 20 years at the top is no mean feat so congratulations to Trevor and Thorley Taverns. Front of house is more than ably managed by Lemini Whiteley who was on hand during our lunch to talk us through the menu, the history of the restaurant, and whose warmth and passion for customer service shone through. 66

Situated at the foot of Harbour Street opposite the beautiful Viking Bay in Broadstairs, the Tartar Frigate has long been renowned as one of Kent’s finest seafood restaurants. The Frigate’s home is a three hundred year old flint building housing a popular pub downstairs serving great bar food with the restaurant upstairs affording great views of the bay and serving splendid seafood and other delicacies.

PETE’S LUNCH I knew before I sat down which starter I was going for – the scallops at the Frigate are truly to die for. They were sweet and light and wrapped in gorgeous parma ham. Served with fresh asparagus spears and all drizzed in a lemon butter sauce I could quite easily have just ordered several servings of this dish and walked away a happy punter. Unlike my dining companion who veered “off piste” with his meaty main course I vowed to keep it sea-based and opted for the Roast Turbot Fillet served with braised lettuce, pancetta, peas & cream. I am a bit of creature of habit when it comes to fish and tend to stick with either Halibut or Turbot and my generous portion or Turbot was beautifully cooked, the delicate flavour of the white flesh enhanced by the creamy sauce and tasty accompaniments. The dish also came with Trevors signature chunky home made chips and a selection of seasonal vegetables. By the time my main course was over I had rather pushed the boat out and probably eaten a little too much. Dessert was going to be a struggle! Still, trooper that I am I opted for a classic Kentish dish, gypsy tart & cream! I did ask for a “smallish” portion but I think my request fell on deaf ears as I was handed practically half a plateful! A wonderfully sweet end to a heavenly belly busting lunch!

JOHNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S LUNCH I was faced with a daunting choice of delicious looking starters from smoked Haddock Rarebit to Salt and Pepper Squid but elected to keep it simple with a genorous slab of fresh Smoked Salmon drizzled with fresh lemon. The starter was beautifully presented with a salad garnish and coupled with a glass of chilled Pinot Grigio went down a treat quite honestly. For my main I elected to try the

Rump of Lamb. Yes I know its a seafood restaurant but the Tartar Frigate is nothing if not versatile. Served with boulanger potatoes and a rosemary Jus with seasonal vegetables. The potatoes were cooked beautifully. Boulanger potato goes well with all roast meat but in particular, roast lamb and is essentially creamy thin potato slices seasoned with either garlic, leek - or in this case rosemary. They certainly tasted great when hooked up with the

succulent and juicy lamb rump. The lamb was extremely tender and had an almost melt in the mouth texture. Delicious! The only problem I had now was making room for dessert. It was a struggle but I made it! I chose the chocolate fudge cake (nicely warmed through) and accompanied with vanilla ice cream. The fudge cake was a fitting end to a delightful meal in a truly charming restaurant.

Marmalade Madams and Marital Mishaps Having had summer in March, April showers in July and almost unheard of heat waves in August, I can’t help but wonder as to what autumn has in store for our corner in Kent, but usually it’s this time of year that’s my favourite for food. Of course there are apples, blackberries and our amazing Kentish cobnuts but Kent also once had orchards of Medlar and Quince. Back in the seventeenth century there were more recipes for quince than any other orchard fruit and both were used extensively to make elaborate sweets. Specialist forms were made which became so common that even to this day they turn up in antique shops, usually mislabelled as chocolate moulds. Similar in taste to the uber trendy Spanish Membrillo,

quince marmalade or paste was incredibly popular and considered to be an aphrodisiac , hence17th Century ladies of the night where called marmalade madams. Usually, weather permitting, the last fruit of the year to be harvested is the sloe. Astringent and unpalatable as it could possibly be in it’s raw state, add some sugar and alcohol and it transforms into what is thought to be the original mother’s ruin; Sloe Gin. The fruit of the blackthorn bush, sloes became widespread during the 16th and 17th centuries when the British countryside was carved up into smaller fields. The blackthorn was the hedgerow of choice, its thorns being very good at keeping livestock in and intruders out whilst the sloes the blackthorn produced were

an added bonus once someone worked out adding alcohol and sugar greatly improved them, the resulting liquor apparently used by country wives for ‘marital emergencies’. The mind boggles.

After 7 years of preparation, expectation and trepidation the Olympics finally took over the UK this month, sweeping up even the grumbliest of anti-sporting humbugs in a mexican wave of unprecedented excitement. Armies of cheerful volunteers materialised even if the predicted travel chaos did not - and on every street corner tourists and locals alike were ushered game wards with giant London 2012 foam fingers.

The last few weeks saw our nation discover itself anew - we fostered an evangelical sense of team GB pride, became more intimately acquainted with the 2012 ticketing website than we would have thought possible and we finally learned what handball actually entailed. We were converted to USA style basketball complete with cheerleaders and finally saw a Brit win at Wimbledon. Now addicted to victory we want to do it all over again - so roll on Glasgow's Commonwealth Games in 2014, where China and the USA won't be able to beat us to the top spot on the medal table. 71

I'm not sure how or why Lipton got the gig as the official tea provider to hotels worldwide, but for a serious tea drinker like me, spying the Yellow Label on holiday is bad news. So on a beach break where R & R is my only goal, its bliss to be in a resort where the small touches like proper tea along with other home comforts have been anticipated - because when you’re doing very little, a moment’s discomfort or hassle of any kind can put a serious kink in your perfect day. Such perfect days are the speciality of the Seaside Palm Beach Hotel on Gran Canaria’s southern tip, between the well-known resort of Maspalomas and the newer more upmarket Meloneras: there’s complimentary water and fruit waiting in my room, as well as pool and beach towels, so there’s no faffing about with towel etiquette before flopping on a sun lounger. I soon learn there are two ways to approach my stay: embrace laziness, allowing just a few trips to the pool bar and generous evening buffet to punctuate a day of dozing in the shade, book in hand, as the palm trees sway in the gentle breeze. Or health-kick it up with the aqua aerobics, tai chi and yoga then soothe tired muscles at the spa (voted into the Top 25 in Spain) while diligently selecting the delicious ‘light’ menu option come mealtime. Needless to say, I choose the former. Most visitors come to Gran Canaria to wind down, relax, soak up the sun and be pampered after all so I base myself at the quiet saltwater pool (one of four pools including a hot pool and a children’s pool) where adults can enjoy a child-free environment, and a member of staff passes between sun loungers, subtly poised to serve thirsty holidaymakers of varying ages and nationalities whose most arduous decision today has been which hydro-massage jet to try out next. Even if your limbs aren’t tired from time on the tennis court, the automated hot-stone-fed steam room provides the ultimate late afternoon relaxation, along with the sanarium, sauna and ice-cold plunge pool. You can also use the sun loungers in this secluded area to get an all over tan in private rather than walking the 800 metres to the nearby nudist section of the vast beach. Come morning it’s back to the buffet for a breakfast of kings: from waffles and eggs cooked-to-order to healthy alternatives served until a leisurely 11 am. You’ll need a steelier willpower than mine to avoid the tempting room of local Canarian cheeses, but hey, it wouldn’t be the perfect day without the 5th trip to the buffet now would it?

Approaching the infamous haremlike tents of Ashford Designer Outlet I was feeling rather anxious about my first personal shopping experience, a dedicated lone shopper I was breaking a habit of a lifetime today. In the style suite I met Deborah Eastlake, the outlet's personal shopper and was pleasantly surprised by her relaxed but very well put together attire and her warm welcome – so far so good. Deborah starts the session by asking me about my personal style and preferences and as we chat I begin to feel more like I’m chatting to a friend than anything else and really start to let my guard down. I fill in a questionnaire about my current fashion style and any body issues I may have and discuss what I kind of outfit I may be looking for. I notice some boards with beautifully clad woman on them which she informs me are to help with assessing which colours suit her clients. She then shows me various colour sets of swatches and asks me which ones I am drawn to. I am drawn immediately to the usual colours I buy and she then picks out some that she feels would suit me. I look with trepidation at some of them as they are not colours I would ever go for but as she holds them up to me face I see that my greeny hazel eyes suddenly pop out and my complexion suddenly looks more radiant. She was right and I am becoming a convert. Deborah tells me that we will peruse about three or four shops (as opposed to the 15 or so that I madly run around in when shopping alone) and that she will pick out various garments that might work and that

I should just try them. Armed now with an idea of what I am looking for and an unexpected colour pallet to base our shopping on we head off to Gap. Her eyes go straight to rails of clothing that are based on my colour pallet and she picks out five or six items. I am ushered to the changing room where I am surprised that they do, in fact, look great. Deborah is on hand with her encouraging words and even re-hangs them on their hangers (a pet hate of mine) and I find myself really starting to enjoy this. I choose a pair of mustard cropped trousers and we are off!

Next we go to Ralph Lauren and again Deborah chooses an array of items that when I try them on I am astounded that they really suit me. If I had been shopping alone I would have been to many more shops and tried half the amount of clothes on with only the woman in the next cubicle to ask if she thinks I look OK in them. Our last stop is Fred Perry and when we walk in we both head for the same top, a top that I would never have singled out before my personal shopper journey (I am learning fast). I try it on and it’s perfect - mission accomplished - except for the perfect little pair of white loafers that Deborah is waving in front of me that really complete the look I didn’t realise I wanted. I do now! I feel great as we head back to the style suite having bought a whole outfit that I am delighted with and armed with a completely different set of ideas as to what suits me and what I should be looking for. As we walk back I discuss with her the kind of

[fashion ] clients she has and I find out that they can come to her for an array of reasons. Perhaps someone newly single who has lost their confidence and needs putting back on track with their wardrobe, or someone who has lost some weight and needs some help out of the baggy tops and “cover up clothes”. Perhaps it could just be someone like myself who has been stuck in a shopping rut for to long and needs a breath of fresh air injected into her wardrobe. I was always under the impression that you needed a certain budget to gain the services of a personal shopper but this is not true. At Ashford Designer Outlet you may be going to a wedding and have the dress but need help with the accessories; or have a drop dead gorgeous skirt but can’t find that top, nothing is too small for the personal shopper experience to be worthwhile. In the past couple of years more people are getting conscious about improving their health and personal appearance. People are looking at celebrities in the media and want to replicate their body image. Others are being told by physicians they need to take care of their health to avoid future implications. This need has fuelled the opening of health clubs and gyms throughout the UK, including some new club operators joining the market place, bringing the rise of the “budget gym”.

The industry has now become a prospective members market. With a wider range of clubs to choose from, club operators have to compete for our membership by offering value for money and keeping members fully satisfied. Membership fees from clubs

in Kent range from £15.00 to £60.00 per month, so if you are looking to get started you need to know which operator to choose. One that will not only give you the best value for money, but also help you achieve your goals quickly.

In the past two years a few budget operators have come into the market. My first impressions were that for such a low monthly member fee these clubs would be poorly maintained, cleanliness levels below standard and machinery out of order for prolonged periods.

[health and fitness ] However, after going for a workout on a few occasions at one I was quite impressed. It was clean, air-conditioned, and had gym staff patrolling the club offering advice and assistance to members. There was also a large variety of machinery which was all in good order. The facilities on offer for £15 per month were definitely excellent value for money. However, this does not necessarily mean it’s the place for you. The club did not offer shower facilities, a swimming pool or fitness assessments. Group exercise classes were extremely limited (14 per week) and not conducted in studios. At the other end of the market there is the premier health club, with membership fees ranging around £55-£60 per month. For more than fives times the price how is this money justified? After training at a premier facility for a number of months I was impressed with the wide range of exercise classes availible (95 per week) in designated studios. A structured

programme tailored to my goals on joining, followed up by a review every eight weeks. Well decorated changing rooms and showers leading out to poolside facilities including a spa, sauna and steam room. For me, these factors gave the premier facility the leading edge, because it was somewhere I could relax as well as train and because I enjoyed the facility, it gave me that extra push to go on those days when I was feeling less motivated. So the advice I would give to anyone choosing a club, is to have a goal in mind, whether that be to lose a set amount of weight by a specific date, build your fitness levels to run the next London marathon, or drop your cholesterol to reduce the chances of developing health complications. Once your goal is determined you can choose the club that will help you develop, and which works to your strengths to enable you to achieve results in the shortest time. Enjoy swimming? - does the club offer pool facilities?

Need encouragement? – are there a variety of classes available and fitness professionals around to help? Are you a complete novice? And if so will you receive a complimentary induction and health check on joining followed by a fitness professional designing a programme tailored to your goals? Atmosphere - does the club feel right for you, are you going to be motivated to go there, are the staff friendly and welcoming. Ask yourself these questions and have a trial workout before you join to make sure the place is right for you. If the club you want is slightly out of your price range, look at your monthly budget, have one less Chinese takeaway, cut down on your cigarettes each week and have just one bottle of wine a month. Your health needs to come first. Whatever your goal is, I wish you the best of luck in achieving it, and anything worth having does not come easy.

Aftercare is also important , when you shower make sure to only pat your skin dry and moisturise to help the tan to last longer. Also available are tan extender creams and touch up cans should you need them if you can't get back in for another spray .

rehabilitation Anyone who has recently undergone oncology treatment or had lower limb surgery, like a knee replacement, knows it can be an anxious time when the physiotherapy comes to an end yet physical strength is still not back to normal. Many patients end up taking on too much activity too soon.

The orthopaedic classes are for patients who have had lower limb surgery and they are aimed at enhancing the patient’s journey from the time of surgery, to the point of full fitness improving strength to enable them to return to normal daily activities.

A pioneering new service for oncology and orthopaedic surgery patients has been developed in East Kent to help bridge the gap between physiotherapy and being able to have a normal active lifestyle. BMI The Chaucer Hospital and The King’s School Recreation Centre, both in Canterbury, are working together to deliver a comprehensive patient-centred rehabilitation service. It is run by a multidisciplinary team of physiotherapists and personal trainers who use up to date research based techniques.

Physiotherapy Manager at BMI The Chaucer Hospital Ronald Talens said: “The link from a patient’s physiotherapy sessions to actually being fit enough to use a leisure centre with confidence was missing and we recognised there was an opportunity to support our patients even further. Both the advanced oncology and orthopaedic rehabilitation programmes are aimed at enhancing patients’ recovery through training sessions on exercising safely and effectively during and after treatment.”

Recent studies have shown the positive effects and importance of exercise in helping fight cancer and treatment related fatigue, distress and maintaining physical function whilst having treatments[i].

Centre Manager of The King’s School Recreation Centre Claire Reed said: “Working with BMI The Chaucer Hospital allows us to deliver a service that is not supported in such an acute way

anywhere else locally. We truly believe that what we’re doing is pioneering and delivers a pathway for people that we believe will get them fit and healthy with a strong sense of self-belief in their health and fitness levels.”

Education Matters

One of my abiding memories of the Olympic Games is from when Jessica Ennis was being interviewed immediately after winning her Gold Medal. A fellow competitor went by and congratulated her with a tap on the shoulder and a few words. Straightaway she turned and said “thank-you” with what seemed genuine gratitude. It was a wonderful example and just one of the many positive messages leftover from the Games. I suspect one of the reasons that Jessica is so popular is that she lives with a spirit of gratitude both in her heart and on her lips. However, there is no doubting her competitiveness. To watch her draw herself into her own world of dedicated mental preparation before throwing the javelin was also impressive. She had long known this was not her strongest event. She had confronted that weakness with extra specialist training and then, when her opportunity came, you could see her focussing on making use of all she had learnt. Teaching students to compete or teaching children to cooperate seems

to be presented as an “either or” choice for schools at present. There is a suggestion that some schools focus on competition whereas in others, everybody has to be seen to do well so there are no losers. Consequently, of course, there can be no winners either. In the world beyond school both skills are required. We need to be able to cooperate. Schools must encourage the art of working within a team and we all need to be able to relate to other people in a positive fashion. Of course, we do not only acquire these basic human skills in school. Much more time is spent at home than at school. If such family environments do not provide experiences of cooperative living brought about by supportive relationships it is hard for schools to fill that fundamental gap. Increasingly it seems that schools are expected to modify behaviour which is caused by problems elsewhere.

Cooperation is vital for successful living as individuals and as societies. I also believe that you have to learn to compete which also means you have to learn to lose. Sometimes we reach new heights because we are encouraged and supported. At other times we have to stretch our own abilities by desiring to do better that we have done before. This may mean beating the other team or even the other person. Of course, it matters how you deal with both winning and losing and there has been much to celebrate in the way the Olympians have set such good examples in response to both experiences. I would suggest good characteristics for assessing the quality of a school might be these. Does it encourage a spirit of gratitude in its pupils which is expressed regularly and with an easy confidence? Do the pupils learn to cooperate in many different parts of school life? When they compete and win, how do they deal with the success? 93

Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not a big fan of networking events that have no other purpose than to sell yourself and your business to as many people as possible within the alloted time space. So when I heard about a new event being held in Canterbury that offered the opportunity to meet other local business people with the focus being on a series of enterprising talks I decided that this was an event I wanted to try out, even if there was going to be â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;notworkingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; at the end (Notworking being networking without the fluff). The brainchild of Create is Jonathan Munn, a minimalist who likes to engage people and encourage change, discovery and innovation. He believes that the creatives of this world are the leaders of society and by creative he does not just mean artistic types, he includes anyone who creates so scientists, engineers, and any forward thinking person is welcomed.

The manifesto of Create is as follows: 1. Create for change, for innovation, for discovery, for you. 2. Take yourself out of your comfort zone. 3. Create the remarkable. 4. Nurture agitators. 5.
