THE BSA EXECUTIVE 2011 - 2012

CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME Dear Colleagues Welcome to Brighton and the 2013 BSA Heads Conference. I hope you will have time during your stay to enjoy The Grand and the delights Brighton has to offer. The theme of this year’s Conference is ‘Dare to Be Different’. This theme hints, without subtlety, at the need to be able to adapt and change as well as to cling firmly to core beliefs and values. We do live in those “interesting times” so oft threatened and the sheer volume of information and noise thrown at us all in these times necessitates a need for steadiness on the one hand and a preparedness to pre-empt and innovate, not just to react, on the other. I am thrilled by our programme of speakers who will, I trust inform, engage and inspire in equal measure.

The most crucial aspect of the conference is the time and space it gives for us all to meet and talk and share our own varied experiences, and, indeed, those core values, given the collegiate and supportive nature of the Boarding Schools’ Association. Those Associations will have the chance to meet on the Wednesday morning to discuss matters of mutual interest and to report back at the AGM on the Wednesday afternoon. Let us all hope that we shall find winter has at long last passed and that we are all bathed in a regenerative warmth on the south coast! Born in Kampala, Uganda, John started boarding at the age of six whilst still living in Uganda. He remembers being blissfully happy at the small primary school in the hills of Kabale. He then became a proud member of the BOAC Junior Jet Club at the age of seven and quickly clocked up 300,000 miles between England and Uganda – and then Botswana. John was then educated (“they did their best”) at Aldenham School and St. Luke’s, Exeter and played professional football “before deciding to do a proper job”. He previously taught geography at Haileybury before becoming Headmaster of Solefield School, Sevenoaks (1986-1997) - this made him the youngest prep school head in the country. He then moved on to Edge Grove, Hertfordshire (1997-2002) and finally the Dragon in 2002. Although he admits to not being very good at sitting still for long periods, John has sat on several IAPS committees and has been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association.

DOCTOR ON CALL? Boarding schools can gain a competitive advantage by providing access to private medical care for pupils, especially those schools with a high intake of overseas boarders. Many things can influence a parent’s choice of boarding school. The school’s academic track-record, culture and facilities, how their child will be cared for and the environment in which they will spend their formative years all come into the equation. All those elements add up to form a school’s brand and it is this brand which parents buy into when choosing a destination to care for and educate their child.

But what about when things go wrong? Children fall ill from time-totime, and accidents do happen. So how does a boarding school live up to its brand promise in this situation? Or in simplistic terms: “What price do the parents of a boarder pay for peace of mind?”

PEACE OF MIND FROM MARSH In fact, it is relatively straightforward to offer that peace of mind. Specialist health insurance schemes enable schools to provide access to high quality medical insurance ― with affordable premiums that can be wrapped into school fees. One such scheme is the Bupa Schools Scheme from Marsh, which offers private medical insurance for pupils. It covers the costs of a child’s eligible treatment in the UK by Bupa recognised consultants, therapists and practitioners, ensuring peace of mind for both schools and parents – for less than £70 per insured pupil per term inclusive of insurance premium tax.

KEY FEATURES INCLUDE: • Full payment for hospital charges such as accommodation, theatre charges, intensive care. • Specialist MRI network – MRI, CT and PET scans paid in full. • 24-hour healthline offering medical information and guidance. • No overall maximum benefit limit in any one year, although there are set limits for certain benefits.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE The scheme offers a host of benefits. Parents can be secure in the knowledge that their children have access to high quality health care provision should their child fall ill, or suffer an accident whilst at school ― especially comforting to the parents of students who live or work overseas. For the school, the added layer of protection strengthens the range of services provided to parents, enhances the brand and offers a much needed advantage in what is a very competitive market. For further information, please contact us (quoting BSA APR13) 01444 313100 or email development.team@marsh.com.

THE BUPA DIFFERENCE The professionals’ choice: Doctors are five times more likely to choose Bupa for their health insurance over any other health insurer. No top-up fees: Choose from more than 10,000 highly qualified, experienced consultants who have met Bupa’s recognition standards in the UK. Cutting edge: As long as there is sound clinical evidence to prove benefit, Bupa will fund cover for new, experimental drugs and treatments – even those not yet approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Requests to fund new or experimental treatment are evaluated via Bupa’s own clinical appraisal process, which takes an average of just 48 hours.

Shaping the conversation ADVERT - MARSH

Today, every school, academy, sixth form and college is interested in promotion. They need to be. The advance of technology means that the public conversation about education is just that – public. It’s everywhere, and just about everyone is involved in it. So every school has to be a part of this conversation. They have to talk about themselves and promote themselves – it’s what people expect. Every school has an image, whether they like it or not. So it’s better to be involved in the conversation and help to shape it.

Why Choose EduCare? “Our practitioners have undertaken approximately 2000 courses and we have found them to be very high quality. Our relationship with EduCare has been very beneficial and we have found them to be professional, helpful and able to adapt well to our systems. I would willingly recommend them. They have successfully filled the gap for alternative methods of delivery.”

Tammie Redman, Milton Keynes Council, Early Years and Childcare Team “The assimilation of knowledge is measured by the questionnaires that accompany each module and we like the fact that they are marked independently.”

Skill Force As an organisation, we get a lot of after-care support from the EduCare team who are always there if you need them.

Connexions “I like the fact that it’s a quite rigorous training process. It’s not something we just rubber-stamp; you actually have to put some work into the programme which means you learn something at the end of the day.”

Royal Society for the Protection of Birds “A huge advantage of EduCare is the flexibility it offers. People can do them when and where they want; the night shift seems quite a popular time to study! Some managers of our residential homes use them as team-building exercises and work together as a group to complete the programme. We have had good feedback from our people. Even when they have been completed, the subjects are still discussed and the advice and information contained within them are put into practice. I would definitely recommend EduCare to other organisations.”

Liz Bennett, Accreditation & Assessment Senior Administrator, Mencap “In short the EduCare methodology is cost effective, accessible, simple, measurable and most importantly, effective. The programme supports our organisation’s health and safety culture and understanding. West Midlands Fire Service is committed to high standards of health and safety and would recommend the programme to other fire services to use within their service to support these standards.”

Mark Bishop, Safety, Health and Environment Adviser, West Midlands Fire Service “People can do it at their own convenience. Everyone likes the certificate which evidences the learning and looks very professional. There are lots of them pinned up on our notice boards around the office. We have just had our independent Child Protection Audit to ensure we comply with all available legislation and best practice and the training was cited in the auditor’s report.”
