We have plenty of “out and about” features for you to enjoy; including our regular East Kent Walk and Cycle routes courtesy of Explore Kent, ideas for your garden from Ashford’s Jackson’s Fencing and Margate’s Papillon Interiors. We also review the recent Broadstairs Spring Fair, part of the hugely successful Broadstairs Food Festival, and preview the 29th Whitstable Oyster Festival. Anyone looking to get a hot-bod in time for the Summer sun need look no further than our article on p86 by world renowned Fitness Guru Jesse Pavelka. The popular American health and fitness expert and star of TV’s “Obese: A Year To Save My Life” has recently teamed up with BMI The Chaucer Hospital in Canterbury to help the good folk of East Kent make the most of themselves this summer. Once you’re in shape and fancy a day at the beach, why not stay over at the eccentric, wonderful, and delightful Walpole Bay Hotel at Walpole Bay, Margate? If anyone can find a more unique, interesting, and passionately run hostelry then I for one would like to hear about it! Our review is on p24. With Father’s Day on June 15th, we have pulled together a whole host of innovative gift ideas on pages 12-14 proving that a thoughtful gift need not cost the earth. On p67 Amy McManus tells us why we should head on down to delights of The Cornerhouse in Minster, near Ramsgate, to sample the London inspired modern British fayre brought to East Kent by head chef Matt Sworder, a protégé of none other than the infamous Gordon Ramsay. With more local news, fashion, music, entertainment, food & drink, health and beauty, travel, and local business news inside, we hope you enjoy our latest instalment. Have a great summer everyone! Local Author Scoops National Award For Canterbury Cathedral Book We recently ran a piece on ‘Paintings in Light’ a book on Canterbury Cathedral’s stained glass windows, and we’re delighted to hear that it has just won a major national award. Written and designed by Canterbury-based author Martyn Barr and published in association with Canterbury Cathedral, ‘Paintings in Light’ was runner-up in the children’s publication category of the Association for Cultural Enterprises’ 2014 Annual Awards. The 56-page guide offers a fascinating insight into the history of stained glass and the stunning windows of Canterbury Cathedral. Paintings in Light includes chapters on the history of glass, how stained glass windows are made, the different types of window in the Cathedral and the stories they tell. Martyn Barr says:“I was surprised and delighted to hear that the

10

book had been entered by the Cathedral and received the ACE Runner-up Award. What was particularly gratifying was the fact that it was competing against entries from many of the top heritage and cultural organisations across the country, including the national museums, art galleries and gardens and major heritage bodies such as the National Trust and English Heritage.” Canterbury Cathedral’s Director of Stained Glass Léonie Seliger, who worked with Martyn on the book, adds: “This is amazing news! Martyn has the gift of seeing things with fresh eyes – and to transmit that sense of discovery and excitement to the reader. The book is filled with unexpected details – sometimes funny, sometimes all too human, and sometimes downright gory - that make you want to get out those binoculars and go on your own journey of exploration through the stained glass.” Martyn Barr, who is also author of the best-selling ‘Young Person’s History Guide to Canterbury’, is now working on his sixth book – a young person’s guide to the First World War, sponsored by Fenwick and due to be published on 4 August 2014.

NEW BOOK Comes Home TRACES DREAMLAND’S 150 YEAR HISTORY Kent Youth Theatre

Kent Youth Theatre, now 15 years old, has announced that having spent the past 6 years at two different Canterbury locations that it is now returning to its place of birth. In 1998 drama students of St. Anselms Catholic School, were the impetus behind the creation, of what is now regarded, in Kent, as the county's leading stage and screen academy. Formalised as Kent Youth Theatre in 2000, the academy has flourished as an organisation, providing many wonderful performance opportunities and educational experiences for countless young and not so young alike. Many of their students have chosen to turn professional and can be seen regularly on television and in films. Currently, with over 100 students in regular attendance, KYT is delighted to be welcomed back home. Mike Walters, Head Teacher of St. Anselm's, has this to say "We are delighted that Kent Youth Theatre will be returning to St. Anselm’s Catholic School as its base. Many of our students have benefitted in the past from their excellent work and we naturally anticipate this to continue. We are delighted too, that our school will provide a base for non-St. Anselm's pupils to attend such a successful organisation. The benefits of participation in drama and the performing arts are widely recognised, in the world of education, as being hugely beneficial for young people." KYT, at its new home, has plans to expand its services and hopes that, as St. Anselm's develops as an "excellent" centre of education, it will be very much an important aspect of it.

Reflecting the impending reopening of Dreamland is a new book which charts its history from the 1860s to the present day. Dreamland Revived has been written by Whitstable author Nick Evans and made its debut in Margate over Whitsun during the official opening of the Dreamland visitor centre.

The 128 page book contains nearly 250 photographs of the park’s best known rides including the Scenic Railway, the Looping Star, the Caterpillar, the Big Wheel, the Miniature Railway as well as the cinema, ballroom, bingo hall and squash courts. Nick said: “I’m delighted, like so many people, to see real progress taking place at Dreamland and the title reflects that change in fortunes. “Not only have I used photographs from my own collection but I have been very fortunate to have been loaned others, some of which haven’t appeared in print before or at least not for several decades.” The story begins 150 years ago in the late Victorian era with the creation of the Hall By The Sea by circus showman ‘Lord’ George Sanger. The book outlines the building of Dreamland from 1920 by John Henry Iles and family, successive takeovers by Associated Leisure, the Bembom Brothers and the late Jimmy Godden and the site’s transfer into the hands of the Dreamland Trust. Dreamland Revived is also on sale at the tourism information centre at Margate’s Droit House, The Kitchen in Duke Street, Margate, Waterstone’s at Westwood Cross as well as online via Amazon, priced £15.99. ISBN 978-09566172-2-4. Further information from Nick Evans on 07743 704547 daytimes, or 01227 275157 evenings, or email nickevanscomms@sky.com

OYSTER FESTIVAL 2014

WORDS BY JESS EVERTON

ENJOY A ROMANTIC SEASIDE FILM SCREENING AT THE OCEAN SIDE CINEMA, TAKE IN THE DELICIOUS DELIGHTS OF THE HARBOUR FOOD FESTIVAL OR GET INTO THE CELEBRATORY SPIRIT AT THE STREET PARADE! These are just a few of the many events to whet your appetite for this years Whitstable Oyster Festival, which takes place from Saturday 26th July through to Friday 1st August. The Festival will be enjoying its 29th year of success by celebrating centuries of oyster farming in Whitstable. This small, quaint seaside town situated along the North Kent coast offers activities throughout the week for all ages and tastes. This year visitors to the event can expect many of the

18

same activities as last year and can also enjoy new and exciting additions to the itinerary. These include a Festival Feast that will continue for six nights and a Sports Day intended for the participation of all family members! To close the week long celebrations in style there is a Masquerade Ball to enjoy and a firework display! Previously the festival has hosted an oyster eating challenge and tug of war, for the competitive festival goers, open air performances for the music lovers and participatory events for adults and

children who like to get involved! In-keeping with the traditionalism of the event, children are invited to take part in building their own ‘grotters’, which are oyster-shell sandcastles that have been built from discarded oyster shells, a tradition that has been ongoing for many years in Whitstable. Once built, they are illuminated at the firework display at the end of the week. Activities such as this remind us of the history in and around Whitstable that the festival celebrates.

Nestled in the chalk slopes of the North Downs, you’ll find a diverse landscape, including 150 acres of ancient woodland, mature trees and hidden glades, teeming with wildlife. This designated Local Wildlife Site sits amid the summit of three hills between the villages of Selling and Shottenden. You’ll find uninterrupted views towards the coast and across the distinctive landscape. Beneath the canopy of trees you’ll find swathes of wildflowers, tree creepers, nuthatches and woodpeckers enjoying the glorious habitat. BROADSTAIRS FOLK WEEK

Imagine a beautiful seaside resort with seven sandy bays and traditional atmosphere – fill it to bursting with over 500 events – including workshops in music, song and dance; a special Children’s festival, music in pubs, Morris men and women dancing through the streets, the Craft and Music fair, the free Hobby Horse Club at the Bandstand, Clarence the Dragon and the inevitable Hooden Horses (the festival mascots) - and then you have Broadstairs Folk Week which this year takes place from Friday 8th to Friday 15th August. In its 49th year, the festival has grown from a traditional English folk dance festival held in the town’s park, into an event that takes over the town for a week. Folk Week attracts visitors from all over the country and beyond – and there are many local people that take the week off for a holiday in their home town – something that possibly doesn’t happen in some parts of Britain!

Horse Club or Morris sides leaping about in the summer sun. For others it’s a chance to see top-class musicians from the folk /roots world perform during the week. Some people just want to dance! You can Appalachian clog, find out exactly what a ceilidh is and why it’s so good for your sense of humour, or venture into a Bollywood workshop and strut your stuff.

Ask several people what Folk Week is all about and you will receive a startling variety of answers. For some, it’s sitting at the Bandstand eating an ice-cream and watching families join in with the singing and dancing at the Hobby

There is a Children’s festival that will stop the “I’m bored” brigade in their tracks. If your little darlings want to juggle, walk a tight-rope, make a weird instrument out of recycled milk cartons or join the fantastic programme of music-making,

THE WONDER OF THE THE WALPOLE BAY HOTEL

WALPOLE BY PETER NICHOLS

Having occasionally taken tea on the veranda at the Walpole Bay Hotel in Cliftonville I was aware of its quirky charms, unique appeal, and wonderful location, but it wasn’t until I met with proprietor Jane Bishop that I fully fell under the beguiling spell of The Walpole Bay Hotel. The Bishops’ story is one of a lifelong ambition being fulfilled on a daily basis with an unwavering determination and passion. Jane and her husband Peter grew up in the Medway towns, and as teenage sweethearts often travelled down to Walpole Bay beach, passing by the Edwardian hotel en route. They often mused that it was a shame that such a grand building wasn’t being fulfilling its potential and that it ought to be restored to its former glory. As the years rolled by, The Walpole was still something of a dream for the Bishops’ so when they overheard two men chatting in a café one day, remarking that the Walpole was being offered for sale at a fraction of the original price, the cogs started turning… 24

Cutting a long story short, the Bishops (still with nowhere near enough cash or capital to realistically embark on such a seemingly reckless gamble) got initial approval from their bank for a loan if they could raise a hefty deposit. They sold everything they owned and more besides to somehow scrape the cash together, only for the bank to withdraw the offer at the 11th hour. Luckily the Walpole’s then owner saw something in the Bishops and agreed to rent the hotel to them for five years to enable them to start turning their dream into a reality. With a huge deposit on the line, this was still an incredibly risky undertaking for two people with no experience in the hospitality trade to take on.

On the evening of their Silver wedding anniversary, the Bishops invited friends and family down to a party in the still largely dilapidated Hotel. On the night of the party, they announced to a very shocked room of partygoers that they were, in fact, the new owners of the Walpole Bay Hotel. The Bishops will celebrate their 20th anniversary at the Walpole next year. The Walpole itself celebrates its centenary this year, and it was Jane and Peter’s ambition to preserve it to its 100th birthday. With the help of son Justin, he wife Gemma (and hopefully one of the seven grandchildren), this family business will continue for decades to come.

[days out ]

The hotel has been lovingly restored by Jane and her family, and combines modern day comfort (all rooms are designed with contemporary décor, stunning bathrooms, and 21st century staples such as large flat screen TV’s, and WIFI), with the ambience of a bygone era throughout the elegant foyer, Edwardian restaurant, 1920’s ballroom (with original sprung maple dance floor), snooker room, and two licensed bars. As you ascend the marble steps into the hotel, the foyer instantly transports you back in time, with its vintage leather sofa, Bakelite telephone, gilt edged mirrors, and the centrepiece of the hotel, the stunning 1927 Otis Trellis gated lift which serves all five floors. Each floor is not only filled with rooms with fabulous sea views, but also with memorabilia, artefacts, artwork, and other assorted wares which form part of the Hotel’s unique “living museum”. Meandering through the corridors and

rooms you can see “exhibits” as diverse as early photographs of holiday-makers enjoying the Walpole, fossils up to 80 million years old found in nearby chalk beds, paintings, photographs, and a plethora of original features, many of which have been unearthed and restored by the Bishops, others donated by guests and well-wishers. One of my favourite displays at the Walpole is the “Napery Gallery”, a huge collection of linen napkins upon which visitors have been encouraged to draw “magical memories” of their stay, which have been framed and hung on the walls. The collection began five years ago when artist and author Curtis Tappenden, down on a visit to write a piece on Margate, decided to leave Jane with a memento of his time at the hotel by sketching the view from the chair in which he sat enjoying his coffee. Five years on and there are hundreds of napkins lining not only the walls of the

restaurant, but throughout the corridors of the hotel, each one a very personal and special testimony to the Walpole. Some are sketched, some in paint (oil and water), embroidered napkins, stitchcraft, poems, portraits, landscapes, and everything besides. Contributors come from around the world, from folk aged 8-80. Works from celebrated artists such as Christian Furr, Paul James, Gordon King, photographer Martin Parr, and even film Director Arnold Schwartzman sit comfortably among the rows of napkin art. Margate’s most celebrated artist, Tracey Emin, is a long-time fan of the Walpole, and has to date contributed two napkins to the Napery, which, in Jane’s casual observation are “probably worth more than the hotel”. For me, the Napery defines Jane and the Walpole; it’s not what you expect to find in a hotel, and if you look at it the wrong way could seem out of place. Look a little closer however and you 25

[days out ] hotel’s latest offering – a top class hair & make-up salon, situated on the third floor of the Hotel. Top London stylist, and former British Avant Garde hairdressing award winner, Jerome Hillion, relocated his entire operation from his successful salon in trendy Spitalfields lock, stock, and barrel to the Walpole after being charmed by Jane, and inspired by her passion for all things Walpole. Jerome brought his friends and clients down for Sunday lunch over a period of six months to seek their approval before approaching Jane with his idea. You can read more about Jerome in our feature on page 85. start to get lost in the beauty of it, the heart of it, you can literally spend hours getting inside the minds of the hundreds of satisfied customers for whom the Walpole is worthy of more than just lip service, they want to become a part of it. The walls also feature pictures of numerous celebrities enjoying the

hospitality of the Walpole, as the historic building is a popular location for TV and film crews. The Walpole is also renowned for their superb breakfast and outstanding Sunday lunches, which are popular with guests and locals alike. In fact, it was Sunday lunch at the Walpole which lead to the

Jane is very aware that her vision may not be shared by everyone, but is also well aware than when someone takes the Walpole to their heart it is for life. With Margate’s now thriving art scene, coupled with a resurgence in the popularity of all things retro, vintage and otherwise, I get the feeling that the Bishops vision will soon be shared by a much wider audience!

THE SECRET WARDROBE find stunning, unique, individual items of clothing, jewellery, handbags, and accessories to compliment ladies of all ages, shapes, and sizes – and all at a remarkably low cost.

Preparing for my feature on Margate in the last issue I spent a little time in the company of Lisa Parsons, owner/ operator of The Secret Wardrobe Boutique. Having recently moved to bigger premises to accommodate her increasingly wonderful offerings. This is a sensational independent East Kent businesses which ought to become everybody’s secret! Lisa’s business is a real labour of love. The majority of her time is spent trawling suppliers the length and breadth of the country (and abroad) to 26

The Secret Wardrobe’s clothing largely focuses on Italian, French and German items, hand-picked by Lisa based on both her innate sense of what looks good, but also on customer feedback, an invaluable tool in Lisa’s eyes. During my time at the shop, I witnessed the personal service Lisa offers each and every customer, helping them complete a look, or promising to source items requested – even telling them not to buy certain items if she feels it will detract from the finished product. The Secret Wardrobe is a place which will appeal to all ladies who are looking for something extra special but who can’t afford “designer” prices. It really is an “Aladdin’s Cave”, with so many wonderful pieces filling up every available nook and cranny.

Word of mouth has already attracted plenty of customers who will happily eulogise about Lisa and the Secret Wardrobe. If you’re in the area, I’d strongly advise you to pop in, have a dig around and you may be surprised at what you find. I suspect the Secret Wardrobe won’t remain a secret for very long!

Make your way from here along Harbour Parade towards the Clock Tower where two important World War Two operations that launched from Ramsgate are commemorated. Beside the clock tower you will find a converted shipping container with artwork of the tumultuous sea and an old steam tug called ‘Cervia’ that was part of a restoration project by Ramsgate Maritime Museum. Continue towards a small wooden building before crossing over the channel between the Marina and the Royal Harbour. Follow the West Pier out to the lighthouse and you’ll discover fantastic views across to the headland at St Margaret’s and back towards Pegwell Bay. Back in 1876 Spencer Square was the home of Vincent Van Gogh who lodged at number 11. From his window overlooking the harbour, he made a number of sketches of the town. In the shade of the historic terraces there is a small park to sit and take the weight off your feet. INSIDE OUT [home and garden ]

BY TONY KING, PAPILLON INTERIORS, FORT HILL, MARGATE

The British obsession with summer continues right here on this page, and once again our obsession finds us considering the finest designs and clever ideas for the great British outdoors. Or indeed garden. Whether you are looking for fun and funky ideas for inside or out there are many to choose from. Here are just a few to whet your appetite:

BLACK+ BLUM GRILL + PLANT Those fabulous Anglo-Swiss designers, black+blum have put the sizzle into BBQ design. A BBQ and herb-garden in one. It looks like a terracotta pot, but conceals a BBQ grill underneath. Grow your herbs on the top to season the food you cook on the grill. It is ideal for small terraces or balconies and even looks good when not in use.

MAGIS PUPPY BY EERO AARNIO Always wanted a dog, but without the mess or having to walk it? Why not consider the iconic Magis puppy? The Magis puppy is a fun, abstract plastic dog constructed from polyethylene which can be used as an ornament for inside and outside or seating for a small child. If you’re looking for a unique item to brighten up your home the Magis puppy could be for you. Puppy is available in three standard colours, three glossy colours, three limited edition colours and a Dalmatian print. It is also available in 4 sizes; small, medium, large and extra large

BLACK+BLUM SALAD PLANT Once again from black+blum another functional but entertaining product. These leafy salad servers stand upright in their own pot and will give life to any table setting. The pot can also be used for mixing (and serving) your salad dressing. They are also the ultimate salad decoration when stuck into the salad upright!

ARPER LEAF CHAIR BY LIEVORE, ALTHERR & MOLINA The Arper Leaf chair has been designed around a beautiful piece of nature, and is a fresh interpretation of clean, essential lines that will fit beautifully into any setting, at home or outdoors. The Leaf Chair is made from steel, but available with a white, mocha or leaf green painted finish. 36

ALESSI DIVA WATERING CAN BY EERO AARNIO Diva is a watering can designed for Alessi by Eero Aarnio. With its comma-like shape the Diva watering can gives an expression of movement. It is a functional and beautiful object that will add a touch of style and fun to your home, garden or balcony. Diva watering can is made of thermoplastic resin and is available in black, green or white.

MAGIS SPUN CHAIR BY THOMAS HEATHERWICK The Spun chair designed by Thomas Heatherwick and produced by Magis represents frivolity that is often lost in the serious arena of furniture design. The sculptural and diverse designs that Thomas Heatherwick has been creating commercially have finally broken their way into the home, and with welcome change. The Spun chair resembles a spinning top and akin to the comfort of a rocking chair the gentle self propelled movement created by the pointed base leaves the user in their own world. Constructed from polyethylene, the chair comes in a choice of colours and is perfect for outdoor use.

GET MOVING BEFORE LAST LUXURY SKYLINE APARTMENTS AT THE

PANORAMA SELL OUT

Phenomenal demand has resulted in over 50% of the remaining penthouse and duplex apartments at The Panorama, Ashford, being reserved off-plan. Anyone interested in owning a part of Ashford’s landmark building is being urged to get moving as the last 11 luxury Skyline penthouse and duplex apartments across floors eight and nine are now on sale. The high-spec Skyline Apartments feature contemporary open-plan living and dining areas with large doubleglazed windows offering plenty of natural light and stunning views across Ashford from the eighth and ninth floor. The two bedroom penthouse properties also boast modern kitchens, tiled bathrooms, access to an exclusive rooftop garden and on-site parking at both lower ground level and above ground. Security is a priority throughout the building, with common areas well lit, a video entryphone system and an on-site concierge service.

During the first phase of sales last year, 210 apartments across floors one to seven all sold out demonstrating the attractiveness of The Panorama’s offer. David O’Neil, Development Director for Dukelease, said he is expecting similar levels of interest in the Skyline suites. “With 50 per cent of the Skyline Apartments already sold, time is running out for anyone still interested in owning a luxury apartment at The Panorama. Buyers have been quick to recognise the various benefits available to them. “With each apartment fitted to precise standards and shops and restaurants within a short walk, The Panorama has proven popular with buyers of all ages looking for a low maintenance, convenience-living lifestyle. Jacksons Fencing

news, topical treats and more... Hooray - It’s May! There’s no shortage of panels at present, so no need for panic buying!

As far as I’m concerned, May is the loveliest month of the year. The burgeoning buds burst into leaf and suddenly everything goes from looking like an old black and white movie to a Technicolor treat that is a feast for the eyes. It’s also one of the busiest months for us as everyone suddenly has the same idea at once and leaps out into their garden with renewed vigour to tackle their spring projects, like creating a new deck or pergola, or replacing the rickety fencing. Every year we try different ways to encourage people to think ahead, by making special offers of free delivery to beat the spring rush, but it still is a shock to the system when we hit record demands, yet again. This year has been even crazier than usual with the added rush for panels after all the wicked winter storms.

We’ve heard some amazing tales of panel shortages in the press. Like this in the Telegraph (24.3.14) “Gardeners have been hit by a national shortage of fences at the height of the DIY season – with panels changing hands for up to four times their usual price on the black market... Many DIY chains and hardware stores have run out of traditional lap fencing, which is being offered for up to £80 a panel to panic buyers…” obviously these are sensationalised stories, it’s crazy stuff if ever I heard it! Well I can say definitely that there’s no need for buying on the black market (wherever that is!).We are very pleased to report that there is no such shortage at Jacksons at present and stocks of all our very popular panels are abundant and available at their usual prices, not inflated ones!

Featherboard or closeboard is a bestseller Jacksons featherboard 1.83m panels currently sell at £41.90 (exc VAT & delivery). A little pricier than the usual DIY chain price, but when you consider Jacksons panels are very high quality, made from the best material, kiln dried and pressure treated softwood to give them a 25-year guarantee - which means a very low lifetime cost, it seems a no-brainer… If you are in a position to spend more, look at what you

could get for £80 - Jacksons premium panels - Tongue and Groove effect 1.83m are £84.45 (exc.VAT & delivery). These are beautifully designed with a morticed and tenoned frame for extra strength, the timber is planed all round and assembled with non-rust stainless steel fixings, not to mention the outstanding Jacksons 25 year Jakcure guarantee, why would you want to waste your money buying anything less? Now into its fifth year, this project has graced the Kent HQ of Jacksons Fencing with amazing displays of up to the minute examples of designer show gardens, aimed at providing visitors with inspiration for their own projects and bringing a little of the glamorous world of Chelsea and Hampton Court flower shows to this little corner of East Kent. The connection with the prestigious RHS shows has taken root, (pardon the pun) with two of the first years competition winners: Heather Appleton and Matthew Childs scooping gold medals at the big shows in the years after creating their first show gardens at Jacksons. I am delighted to hear that this year at Chelsea it is rumoured there will be even more ex-Jacksons show gardens winners exhibiting their design skills,

The Paradise show garden at Jacksons with its glorious planting will be missed as it makes way for a new show garden design brought to life for 2014!

when Heather and Matthew are joined by one of the 2011 winners, Helen ElksSmith. Her garden ‘The City Of London Corporation Oak Processionary Moth Garden’ aims to raise awareness of these pesky moths with landowners and the general public, and underline the need and importance for co-ordinated treatment against infestations of the pest which have proved impossible to eradicate in some areas of West and South-West London. It’s an interesting choice of inspiration for a show garden and having seen some of the plans it’s definitely one to look out for if you watch the TV programmes about Chelsea, or if you are lucky enough to visit the show. And, I’m happy to say there’s another connection to Jacksons at the Chelsea Flower Show this year - our Venetian panels and the lovely new Retreat shelter will be starring in Chris Webb’s Sculpture garden, designed by Liz Brewer. It will be hard to miss right near the entrance to the Grand Pavilion! We launched our Retreat shelter last year, it was developed from an initial idea of a garden structure in The Sanctuary by Joanne Winn, one of the winning show garden designs last year.

The Chill Out Garden by Helen Elks-Smith to be replaced with a new show garden

It was certainly well received and I’m pleased to say that it now gets to kick its heels up at the RHS Chelsea flower show in May.This will be a space where visitors are warmly invited to freely touch and explore his Chris Webb’s work. The sculptures are thoughtfully positioned in a beautiful garden setting themed to complement it. Chris will be working on the completion of a large stone carving during the show in his pop-up workshop. Our Retreat will lend itself perfectly to a ‘sheltering’ role in the garden. So on to this year and the Jacksons show gardens design competition, the opening is planned for the 31st May at Jacksons HQ in Stowting and the two new winning designs will be revealed, with the other five gardens having been livened up for the new season. The two gardens making way for new young blood are Helen Elks Smith’s Chill Out garden and the lovely Paradise garden by Mary Ann le May. It will be sad to see them go, but exciting all the same to see what’s new. So to tip our hats at them, here they are on this page to enjoy for the last time. We’ll miss the wonderful colour of the Paradise’s planting and the great relaxing vibe when imagining chilling out in the hammock!

More info: www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk/showgardens The Show Gardens Open Day is from 10.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 31st May, we hope you will come along to see the gardens and enjoy the fun. There will also be a free prize draw, special offers and a chance to meet the designers of the 2014 show gardens. We will also be having a 'farmers market' with a wide selection of stalls selling locally produced mouth watering foods, drinks, preserves, with arts & crafts, jewellery, plants and garden products. Parking is free, as is admission and there will be plenty of cover just in case the weather isn't kind to us! Go to jacksons-fencing. co.uk/showgardens for more info.

Blooming lovely Pretty-as-a-picture floral fashions flatter our feminine side this summer, writes Whitefriars’ fashion editor

We all know the importance of protecting the English rose complexion, and this jaunty trilby ensures you’ll be pretty in pink.

Phase Eight, £65 Karen Millen, £205

One flexible key piece can carry you through a season. Teamed with skinny jeans and sky-high sandals this jacket takes on an edgy and urban look, but work it with white linen trousers for anything from a wedding to Wimbledon!

Comfort needn’t compromise on style, as these leafy wedge heels in burnt orange go to show.

Clarks, £49.99

Topshop, £160 River Island, £50

It’s always worth spending out on quality swimwear – fit and fabric pay dividends, and this flattering example draws all eyes to the dazzling shades at your slimmest point. This tropical jungle print jumpsuit is from a range designed for River Island by the super club Pacha in Ibiza, so who says floral’s not cuttingedge?

The pastel blossoms of spring are fading and the hot shades of summer are flowering. This trend in nature is reflected in the high street as the summer’s style for bright petal patterns is blooming throughout Canterbury’s Whitefriars shopping centre.

Nothing inhabits feminine indulgence like this silk kimono, which could be worn for floating around indoors or as an elegant cover-up on the beach.

Hobbs, £89

Okay, so not everyone’s a fan of bright colours but that needn’t rule out the petal power with classic black and white pieces like these shorts around.

M&S, £29.50

The season’s most-wanted look celebrates the vitality and vibrancy of the coming summer. The theme can be worked well in cotton and other cool fabrics by day and in sultrier sheer textures by night. So, whether you’re on holiday in foreign climes, hitting Herne Bay seafront or finding a watering hole in Whitstable, this summer’s signature style will be flattering and flexible. More muted tones may dominate for the rest of the year, but while the sun’s out let’s have fun amongst the flora and fauna! 48

Don’t feel under pressure to work this pattern head-to-toe; just one stand-alone item like this breezy and beautiful bag can breathe nature’s energy into a whole outfit.

[title ]

The idea of delicate florals may sound tame to streetwise young dressers, but a bold spin is to go big on the theme by mixing or, in the case of this two-piece, matching your prints. Monsoon, ÂŁ79

COMMON OUTLAW INTERVIEW WITH THOM CAKEBREAD BY BRADLEY MCMANUS

COMMON OUTLAW ARE BACK AND I'M QUITE EXCITED ABOUT IT!

Thom Cakebread, Jamie Keeler, Sam Moore & Tom Hollands are the group that you should be going to see in Kent. Formed originally back in 2010, the group had a type of reforming last summer and have been back preparing for their new EP ever since. Keeping in within Kent, their new EP was recorded in Deal: We recorded at the Astor Recording Studio with Chris Williams who we highly recommend. As well as having a cracking personality and making the recording sessions more fun than a job, he also has a great ear and was wonderful at chucking in extra creative pieces to add to the record. By the time this review is out the group will have played their launch gig at The Harp Restrung in Folkestone - on a side note you can purchase hard copies online (check out their Facebook page / commonoutlawuk) We like to better ourselves and try and create a better EP than the last and we felt we have with this new record. The

first two EP's we had a set time to get them done, whereas on this new EP we had 4/5 sessions in the recording studio over 3 months and were able to come back in with new ideas and really fill the record out! We're all very proud of it! My main question has to be, why the break, what happened? Thom was quick to put right that they never really went away: For the last 2 years we've been concentrating on originals and people know us as an originals band now instead of a covers band which is great and that's the way we prefer it. So no more covers at all then? We still do the odd cover and chuck it into our original setlist just to have a bit of fun but we won't be doing a covers gig for a while. Common Outlaw are a mixed bag of musical influences, personally I have always likened them to Feeder or The Arctic Monkeys but their newer stuff is a bit more Queens of The Stone Age and Kings of Leon. All epic bands to say the very least but no one wants to live in the

shadow, it's more important than ever to be harder to explain. If people can't determine who you are like then it just shows how your sound is more unique. I say one band, another says something completely different. Go and decide for yourself and give them a decent cheer for their hard work. Gigs a plenty for Common Outlaw over the next month or two, you can catch them on the following dates. 9th May @ Harp Restrung, Folkestone 17th May @ Rafters, Maidstone 25th May @ Folkestone Air Show 21st June @ Ivy Leaf, Sheerness 26th July @ Iwade Rock Festival 16/17th August @ Folkestone Harbour Festival Thom was adamant I put this in, a true testament to his professionalism. "Thanks to everyone that has genuinely listened to our music. When writing songs, the best accolade you can get is recognition for your work." www.facebook.com/commonoutlawuk www.twitter.com/commonoutlawuk www.commonoutlaw.bandcamp.com 51

NICOLEKIDMAN WORD BY NERISSA BLOWER

THE LADY HAS GRACE

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967, Kidman was the eldest daughter of clinical psychologist and biochemist Antony Kidman and nursing instructor Janelle (nee Glenny). The couple also had a younger daughter, Antonia, who later became a journalist and TV presenter. After Kidman was born, the family moved to Washington DC in order for her father to continue his research in breast cancer. During their time in the capital, Kidman’s parents were involved in anti-war protests because of their opposition to the Vietnam War. When Kidman was four the family moved back to their parent’s native Sydney,

Australia. At a young age Kidman enrolled in ballet classes and began to show a talent for acting at primary and secondary school despite being a very shy and timid child. Along with close friend and fellow actress Naomi Watts, Kidman attended Phillip Street Theatre in Sydney and then Australian Theatre for Young People where she studied drama, mime and

performing arts. A popular actress at the theatre, Kidman was urged by teachers and students to pursue a full-time acting career. In 1983, the sixteen-year-old made her first film debut starring in Australian festive favourite,‘Bush Christmas’.This led to many film and TV offers including the lead role in ‘BMX Bandits’ in the same year,‘Windrider’ in 1985 and ‘Emerald City’ in 1988. 53

[cover story ] After many successful movies including gangster film ‘Billy Bathgate’ in 1991 and ‘Far Away’ in 1992, her fame continued to increase with every acting job she took.

SANTA MONICA, CA FEB 26: Nicole Kidman arrives at the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards at the Beach on February 26, 2011 in Santa Monica, CA.

Her first commercial breakthrough was playing Dr Chase Meridan in the 1995 blockbuster ‘Batman Forever’.The film included some of the most popular actors of the 1990s including Val Kilmer, Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones. Commended for her on screen talents, Kidman further showcased her natural acting ability and comedic timing in ‘To Die For’ and she was honoured with a Golden Globe Award for her performance. In the mid to late 1990s, Kidman was one of the most sought-after actresses on the silver screen and rejected any notion of typecasting by taking on a variety of challenging roles. In 1996 Kidman played the leading lady in the film adaptation of Henry James’s ‘Portrait of a Lady’.The actress followed this performance with many more successes including action thriller ‘The Peacemaker’ in 1997 and black comedy ‘Practical Magic’ with Sandra Bullock and Stockard Channing. Kidman and Cruise were coupled up again onscreen as husband and wife in Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ shortly before their real life marriage came to an end.The former power couple of Hollywood announced their separation in 2001 and the marriage was dissolved. Not one to let her personal life stand in the way of her professional career, Kidman starred as the beautiful yet fragile Satine in hugely successful ‘Moulin Rouge!’ The musical directed by Baz Luhrmann and featuring Ewan McGregor became a smash hit and Kidman received an Academy Award nomination and won her second Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.

A promising young actress, Kidman had to temporarily abandon her acting career when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1984.The teenager helped to provide for the family as a massage therapist but quickly returned to acting when her mother was given the all-clear. Having conquered the film and TV industry in Australia, Kidman was determined to break America. With the support of an American agent she made 54

her US debut in thriller ‘Dead Calm’ in 1989 alongside esteemed actors Sam Neil and Billy Zane. The film was a success and Kidman became a rising star in the United States. Her next movie was the action romance ‘Days of Thunder’ in 1990 where her on-screen lover became an off-screen love interest. Kidman met actor Tom Cruise on the film set and after a short courtship, the couple married on Christmas Eve in 1990.

2001 became Kidman’s most prosperous year with lead roles in paranormal thriller ‘The Others’ and crime drama ‘Birthday Girl’. In the same year Kidman further showcased her singing talents by releasing the record ‘Something Stupid’ with Robbie Williams. The remake of Frank and Nancy Sinatra’s duet became an instant hit and reached Christmas number one in the UK. Kidman was recognised for her diverse acting ability and was cast as a pivotal role

convincing portrayal of supportive wife and companion.

It took several more films for Kidman to reach top form again, but it was her role as the manipulative Mrs Coulter in the 2007 childrens fantasy film,‘The Golden Compass’ that re-launched Kidman’s career.

Kidman’s next highly anticipated role is of Hollywood actress turned royal celebrity Grace Kelly in the film biopic; ‘Grace of Monaco’.The film, described as a character study of the iconic actress; portrays Kelly’s identity crisis during an argument between her husband Prince Rainier II and French President Charles de Gaulle in 1962.The film is due for release next month.

Next on Kidman’s agenda was starring in the epic war drama,‘Cold Mountain’ in 2003. JAN WYATT

[food and drink ]

PROPRIETOR OF “WYATT & JONES” RESTAURANT, BROADSTAIRS

After just one year in operation, Broadstairs restaurant “Wyatt & Jones” have found themselves in the top three for this years “Restaurant of the Year” category at the Taste Of Kent awards and have a growing reputation for providing top quality locally sourced food & drink in Broadstairs. With that in mind we thought it was a good time as any to have a chat with Proprietor of Wyatt and Jones; Jan Wyatt. Hi Jan, thanks for spending some time to field our questions. There’s no doubt you have stunning views down here, how does your location influence your menu? Viking Bay is beautiful and we wanted to have a menu that was faithful to that view. We only use local fishmongers and when lobster is in season it’s caught by local nets and delivered from the boats straight to our door. People like knowing that when there’s fresh fish on the menu it’s been caught just miles from their table. You serve breakfast lunch and supper here, what’s the most important meal of the day for you? Breakfast is the foundation of your day and lots of restaurants ignore this opportunity. I like a greasy spoon as much as the next man but sometimes you want something special. We’re part of Produced in Kent’s ‘Kent Breakfast’ association, serving fresh Kentish eggs with freshly made Hollandaise and our own muffins baked in our kitchens, however you like; Benedict, Florentine,

Royale. For me there is nothing better than a Fisherman’s Kipper breakfast looking out across the bay and then a walk along the beach. Heaven. What would say is your speciality? Our menu’s are small and select and change with the seasons which means we don’t need specials. The focus is on the ingredients and source of the produce used. But I have to say our Lobster, fish and beef sharer dishes are the dishes I am most proud of. Food is obviously the name of the game here but the perfect beverage can make a meal. What is your favourite summer tipple? For Breakfast I like a Virgin Mary or if I have been up late a Bloody Mary! I'm a big fan of Sipsmith - an independent distillery in London which is perfect for a G & T but I’ve just discovered Sipsmith’s Summer Cup. Hints of lemon and earl grey, perfect with freshly chopped fruit topped with Lemonade or Ginger Ale. It’s light too so perfectly acceptable accompaniment to lunch!

After just one year it’s obviously a testament to both yourself and the staff that you made the top 3 out of the 500+ restaurants voted for in the 2014 Taste of Kent “Restaurant of the Year” awards. What are your aspirations for the future here at W&J? In our first year to reach the 2014 Taste of Kent final for Kent Restaurant of the Year was a great achievement and very flattering. However we are not the finished article and have big plans for the future as we establish our team, getting over the inevitable hurdles any new venture entails.Watch this space and our menu’s. Loaded question here! Wyatt & Jones aside, what are your favourite places to eat in Kent? I love the Sportsman at Seasalter for a special occasion with family or friends but for a spontaneous lunch it has to be Dan’s Deli in Whitstable. LEE BEHAN Lee's love affair with food started at an early age, joining his Chef father in professional kitchens every spare weekend or holiday available. At the tender age of 13 he cooked dessert for a list of dignitaries which included HRH Princess Anne; opting for a seasonal Summer Pudding with clotted cream. As he notes himself "it involved no real cooking". Lee has had the opportunity to cook with many of the UK's leading chef's including Mark Hix, Anna Hansen MBE and Gizzie Erksine; celebrities such as actress and designer Sadie Frost, singer Boy George and Hollywood actor Stanley Tucci have all enjoyed Lee's food via varied & epic fundraising dinners.

BUTTER POACHED ASPARAGUS

& PARMA HAM SERVED WITH A DEEP FRIED BREADED EGG AND SHAVED PARMESAN

I think all Chefs and keen cooks wait with anticipation for the first shoots of asparagus. For one it signals the embryonic stages of summer and happy clapping and lip smacking from my lovely better half Alexa, but more importantly here in England we produce the best asparagus in the world. I happen to believe that Kentish asparagus is as good as it gets.We get ours from the Sevenscore farm shop near Ramsgate. This recipe is a sure-fire dinner party winner, fantastic flavours and fresh ingredients, and show me any sane person who doesn't like ham and eggs and I’ll eat 2 portions. The real showcase in this dish is the deep fried breaded egg, totally simple, but never fails to illicit an “ooo” and “ah” from the table. Cook this before the season ends for a fantastic start to a meal or do as I do, serve it with homemade chunky chips for a more hearty dinner option. 1. Prep the eggs. Bring a pan of water to the boil, once boiling add the eggs and cook for exactly 7 minutes (use a timer or your eggs will be overdone and hard, or too runny). Once cooked immediately plunge into ice cold water and once cool enough to handle, peel and leave immersed in the cool water 2. Whilst your eggs are boiling prep your asparagus by trimming off all woody stem and discoloured bits to reveal the lovely green flesh 3. Pop on your oil. If you have a deep fat fryer then set it to 170˚c (or test the heat of a pan of oil by dropping in a 1cm piece of bread into the oil, if the bread turns golden in 30 seconds then it’s perfect, any sooner then it’s too hot)

process of breading them. First dip the soft boiled egg into flour, then into the beaten egg, and finally into the breadcrumbs (or Panko) and onto a plate ready for frying 5. Add the butter to a shallow pan of boiled water, plunging the asparagus in, and cook until it's tender 6. Place your eggs into the oil and cook for about 2 minutes, you want them just golden then remove onto kitchen towel 7. Finally, dress your plate with the lovely Parma ham, the asparagus, the egg, the parmesan and finished with a little touch of chopped parsley - enjoy!

MARGATE

SMOKEHOUSE Tucked away behind a residential street in Margate, the Margate Smokehouse operates in a relatively small industrial unit producing some of the most delicious smoked fayre you’re likely to find anywhere in the country. The brainchild of John and Sharon Harrison, the Smokehouse currently serves a growing number of independent farm shops, delicatessens, restaurants, local farmers markets, and regional food fairs in East Kent, and is getting quite a reputation for the unique quality of their bespoke, premium smoking service. Tackling anything from the usual salmon, meats and cheeses, to mushrooms, garlic, chillies, mussels, and sea salt as well as delicacies such as gravalax and smoked salmon and cream cheese pate. The Smokehouse’s ever expanding portfolio of products and customers are testimony to a local couple determined to make their dream of a family business a reality. Although Sharon is native to East Kent, having grown up in Margate, 62

the Harrison’s met in London where they both worked at the time, before deciding to move down to East Kent and starting a family. John, a former marine and a Chef by profession, always wanted to open a restaurant, so the couple started to save with a view to making that dream become a reality. However, come the economic collapse of the late 2000’s, the Harrison’s decided that a venture as risky as a restaurant would be a foolhardy investment, and consequently shelved the idea. However, all the while they had been saving, and with the desire for both financial independence and to own a food based business, John hit upon the idea of the Smokehouse. With little competition anywhere in the area, and with those establishments who did sell

smoked goods selling standard products with no real variety or accounting for individual taste, John felt that by smoking to taste, and refining and tweaking smoking times and methods that they could establish a real point of difference and bring to life the true delights of cold smoked produce. Their savings meant that they could start the business debt free, including paying for the bespoke manufacture of their smoker, hand built by Faraday Fabrications in nearby St Peters. The produce is smoked at 13-14 degrees using either oak or apple dust. With both partners holding down their previous jobs (Sharon at the council, John still working in London in security), starting in earnest last October, the pair split the workload

alongside looking after their 6 year old daughter, spending weekends at farmers markets, selling from a hut at Whitstable Harbour Village and engaging the local independent food businesses including Quex Barn in Birchington and Macknade Fine Foods in Faversham. With a little help from friends and family (especially when it comes to babysitting!) the Smokehouse has flourished from day one! The Smokehouse are intent on using the finest locally sourced products, smoking meats from Stour Valley Game to produce magnificent smoked duck and venison prosciutto as well as great applewood smoked pork sausages from

the Sandwich Sausage Company. As well as the traditional smoked salmon the Smokehouse also produce a wonderful beetroot cured salmon which is dry cured with salt, sugar & beetroot giving the salmon a beautiful pink tinge They also smoke five types of local cheese including; Kelly’s Goats Cheese (hard) Ellie’s Goats Cheese (soft, almost feta like rolled in herbs of chili), Shaggy’s Beard (Camembert style goats cheese), Bowyers (Brie like, using Fresian cow’s milk), and Winterdale Shaw (cheddar). John spent up to six months perfecting the smoking process for some of the cheeses, and it’s this kind of dedication and commitment to quality which is enabling the Harrison’s to build a

successful business. Just six months in and Sharon has already quit her job to work full time on the business, with John looking to join her before the end of the year. It’s great to see a fledgling business thriving, and to see a family so passionate about creating a quality local product as well as a legacy for both their family and for East Kent! I strongly recommend you check out Margate Smokehouse’s products for yourself, available not only at the farmer’s markets, stalls, and food fairs, but also online at www.margatesmokehouse.co.uk

THE KITCHEN (LET’S BAKE!) MARGATE’S OLD TOWN “The Kitchen” in Margate’s Old Town is about to celebrate its first birthday. The Kitchen opened last June, alongside proprietor Lisa Hemingway’s other business in Margate Old Town, The Cupcake Café to bake fresh cakes every day for the cafe and extend the retail element that had already been within the cafe. The Kitchen was designed to be an open space that would encourage the community of all ages and all abilities to come along and get baking. It’s very sociable, relaxed and great fun. The Kitchen offers a full range of courses designed for all ages and abilities. On offer are bread making, cupcake baking and decorating, Chocolate Truffle Making and more. They offer Children’s Parties, even themed parties, and also tailor-made cooking, baking and decorating classes. I went along to check out one of 64

the children’s cake decorating classes to witness first-hand the vibrant atmosphere and enthusiasm from both the kids and the teachers. It’s great to see a local business bringing the community together and as a long-time fan of Margate Old Town, and The Cupcake Café in particular I’d encourage anyone in the area to check out what’s on offer at The Kitchen. Here’s to many more birthday’s to come!

BROADSTAIRS FOOD FESTIVAL SPRING FAIR

Broadstairs town was buzzing over the Easter weekend with the welcome return of the Broadstairs Food Festival’s Spring Fair. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, over fifty local and regional food and drink producers were in Pierremont Park, flying the flag for Kent. “We have a wealth of brilliant food producers in Kent,” says Jo Scott, Festival Director,“and that is growing year on year. Many of our stall holders are Taste of Kent award winners, underlining the quality of the produce we offer at our events.” Even the downpour on Easter Sunday didn’t deter visitors. “We know the weather can be unpredictable,” says Sarah Bowers, of Thanet Farmers Market, “but the event organisers accommodate that by having most of the stalls undercover. We have showcased our own products from Little Stour Orchard since the October Food Fair began in 2009 so it’s great to see how a second event has grown so quickly.” There were plenty of hot food choices: freshly cooked curries from Thailand and India, French crepes, venison, bacon and halloumi burgers, and freshly fried fish.

“My father has his own boats,” said newcomer Kelly Smith from Dungeness Fish Hut, “so I know this fish was landed yesterday. We can’t get much fresher than that.” Other newcomers included Canterbury Curry Club, Beth’s Mogador with Hungarian salads and pastries and Dine Thyme’s range of pies. Booking is well underway for the well established autumn Food Fair, 3rd to 5th October and each of these traders are keen to reappear. Easter would not be Easter without a Bonnet competition and the thirty inventive hats and caps presented Malcolm Cox, Festival Chairman, with the tricky task of finding category winners. Fortunately with a bountiful supply of Easter eggs donated by Budgen’s of Broadstairs and Waitrose Ramsgate, nobody went away empty handed. Jo Scott, “The Festival is run as a community interest company – on a not for profit basis. As trustees, we need to offer affordable pitch fees which

allow local and fledgling businesses to present their produce.Yet we are equally committed to keeping the spring event, and the October 3 day Food Fair, admission free for visitors. This year, we started a ‘Pop A Pound in the Pot’ scheme, offering visitors the chance to contribute voluntarily. This was very successful so we would like to thank everyone who ‘popped a pound’.” Followers of Twitter and Facebook will have read plenty of positive entries over the weekend with many people expressing surprise at the diversity of stalls – though no surprise regarding the quality. Broadstairs Food Festival has certainly become the buzz word for excellence in terms of a great, free family event.Visitor numbers of over twenty thousand visitors at the Spring Fair underline that – and with another fifty thousand expected in October, the Festival is putting Broadstairs, and Thanet, firmly on the food map of Kent.

THE CORNERHOUSE

AT MINSTER BY AMY MCMANUS

Can you remember the last time you visited Minster? I strongly suggest you put a date in the diary. If the tranquillity and history of this beautiful village were not enough to tempt you previously, then let me tell you why Minster is now a place I shall be visiting very frequently in the future. The Cornerhouse is situated, as one might expect, on a corner, directly opposite the local church grounds. A beautiful old building full of historical architecture, but with modern interior design twists blended in. Not solely a pub or restaurant, The Cornerhouse sits neatly in between the two and manages to work on both levels with a bar available for those who simply wish to pop in for a drink. The staff are lovely and really know their products; it's always great to hear recommendations and personal favourites, none of which disappointed. The Cornerhouse was opened last summer by local boy Matt Sworder, who has spent several years working in some of London’s premier restaurants, including Gordon Ramsey’s La Noisette and Anthony Demetre’s Les Deux Salons.

After being served an incredibly delicious local pear juice we were seated in the main restaurant area amongst the red bricks, beams and fireplaces with the tables around us filling up very quickly for lunch. Always a good sign. It is not usual that I mention the bread course at the beginning of a meal, but this bread deserves extra credit having been hand-made on site. It is the signatures like these that take a place from good to great. As recommended, we opted for the starter tasting platter; a plethora of 'proper' pub snacks. What a feast; the classics were given their own Cornerhouse signature; menus items you have seen time and time again, but prepared in a new and interesting way. My favourite was undoubtedly the black pudding scotch poached egg. Closely followed by the pork crackling sticks with apple sauce dip. Oh, not to forget the sausage roll and the chicken liver parfait. Okay, so it's pretty hard to pick a favourite when it all tasted so good!

The mains followed the same high standard. The roast sirloin of beef was cooked rare and tasted beautiful while the loin of cod with pancetta provided a thoroughly satisfying fish main where each element of the dish worked together in every mouthful. A very special mention goes out to the bread and butter pudding, which was undoubtedly one of the best we had ever tasted. The fresh vanilla custard soaked deep into the bread and gave it the wonderful sogginess that I love in this dessert. So what are you waiting for? Book your table now! 42 Station Road, Minster, Kent, CT12 4BZ, 01843 823000 www.thecornerhouseminster.co.uk It gives me great pleasure to wish the Cornerhouse a very happy 1st Birthday on 8th June from everyone at East Kent Lifestyle. Check out their website for the special celebratory menu.

THE EDIBLE ISLAND

[travel ]

WORDS AND PICTURES BY JAILLAN YEHIA

Last year I visited the city of Vancouver and wrote about the Canadian West Coast metropolis for this very publication – I’d heard how it regularly tops polls as one of the most liveable places on the planet, but only after my arrival did I discover the reputation of its island namesake. Vancouver Island is the largest Pacific Island west of New Zealand, larger than Sicily and a shade smaller than Taiwan – but while British Naval officer George Vancouver may have given his name to both his discoveries, that’s where the similarity ends.

The best of these secrets is the interwoven network of local, homegrown and organic food, wine and culinary culture which exists here, all thanks to the passionate expert chefs, farmers and foodie entrepreneurs who’ve chosen to make The Island their home.

‘The Island’ as it’s simply known throughout this part of North America is an entirely distinct destination in its own right, and as I discovered, a genuine foodie paradise as well as a nature lover’s playground.

This culinary explosion is just beginning to make an impact on the international tourist scene – forging an affordable, down-to-earth, friendly and expansive alternative to Napa Valley for those who want to jump in their car and stop only for fantastic food and wonderful wine.

Large enough to offer everything from zip lining to wine tasting, cultured city breaks to wilderness exploration, yet small enough to have a community vibe wherever you go, there’s something undeniably special and dare I say even secret about The Island.

This haven for gastronomic exploration has still got its grip firmly on reality – meaning you can keep a similar grip on your purse strings – so here are the spectacular secret stops on Vancouver Island’s foodie trail…

VICTORIA Touted as the most British place in all of Canada and named after the Queen who made it a colony, the walkable city of Victoria reflects the values of the lady herself; rather modest, genteel and pleasantly old fashioned but with a power that belies its appearance – this after all is the capital of British Columbia, the seat of power and a force to be reckoned with. From a food lover’s point of view there’s far too much on offer in this pint-sized city to tackle in the 2 or 3 days the average tourist spends here, so do yourself a favour and allow plenty of time to take in these Victorian highlights:

COOKING CLASSES WITH THE LONDON CHEF There can be no better example of the draw of Vancouver Island than the talented people who’ve come from all over the world to set up flourishing food-based businesses here. Step forward The London Chef – Dan Hayes, originally a Londoner as the company name suggests, now juggles a schedule of ever-changing food and cooking classes in a modern and spacious purpose-built kitchenclassroom with a successful café/deli and a catering business in the capital. thelondonchef.com AUTHENTIC INNOVATIVE FRENCH MACAROONS AT BON MACARON PATISSERIE When macaroons come in flavours like hummus and poppy seed, curry mango chutney and bacon and cream cheese it makes them pretty memorable – though the French owners who started this adorable shop also offer more traditional sweet flavours such as vanilla cheesecake and salted caramel. www.bonmacaronpatisserie.com ARTISAN COFFEE AT FERNWOOD COFFEE ROASTING COMPANY You know the hipsters are in town when there’s a queue round the block for carefully hand-blended coffee, so 72

park your fixie bike round the back and settle in at Fernwood’s café, the Parsonage, for an award-wining espresso and a locally-sourced snack, then buy a bag of beans roasted on site, to take home with you. www.fernwoodcoffee.com DELECTABLE TEA AT SILK ROAD If tea not coffee is your poison you’ll want to stop in at Silk Road, a veritable tea emporium selling every contraption a serious tea connoisseur could wish for, some tempting crockery, and most importantly a hand-picked selection of tea blends from the around the world. If there’s a tea lover in your life this is where you should stock up on gifts. If it can be done with tea they’re doing it here – from the tea spa to tastings and what founder Daniela Cubelic doesn’t know about tea frankly isn’t worth knowing. www.silkroadteastore.com FINE DINING AT ULLA RESTAURANT Chef Brad Holmes is at the helm of his own eaterie whose unpretentious, welcoming and casual air belies the genuinely innovative and exciting food that will leave you running out of adjectives to describe what’s on your plate. What’s more it’s been done in a city where the dining scene isn’t about fancy

food or Michelin stars which just adds to the feeling that you’ve stumbled upon something really special, almost secret. www.ulla.ca THE PEDALER’S FOOD FOCUSED BICYCLE TOURS Joining cool bike tour operation The Pedelar for one of their signature cycling tours of the city streets is an unparalleled way to explore this two-wheels-good destination. The consumption continues with tours named Beans & Bites, Eat.Drink.Pedal and Hoppy Hour, and the great guides turn what would already be a fun day out into an utterly memorable one. www.thepedaler.ca WHERE TO STAY - HOTEL RIALTO A contemporary boutique hotel with all the touches you’d expect from a modern property yet delightfully housed in a 1912 heritage building in the heart of downtown Victoria, a short walk from the city’s boutiques and attractions, the hotel also plays host to one of the area’s most buzzing and atmospheric cocktail bars. The Veneto lounge serves tapas as well as expertly mixed and innovative cocktails like The Winterfell, described as a cocktail of fire and ice in which Bourbon holds court with apricot, lemon and white balsamic reduction. www.hotelrialto.ca

THE COWICHAN VALLEY Meaning ‘the warm land’ this part of the island has the most favourable growing conditions and is home to locally crafted meats and cheeses, vinegars and vegetables, earning it the nickname of Canada’s Provence. These are just a selection of sought-after stop-offs on your edible road trip. CIDER TASTING AMONGST THE ORCHARDS AT MERRIDALE CIDERWORKS Owner Janet Docherty has been running these orchards for 13 years overseeing the apples which surround the restaurant and tasting rooms being turned into a selection of tasty ciders which you can sample while learning interesting facts; it turns out that cider orchards don’t need to be fenced off from local wildlife as cider apples are too bitter for passing deer to nibble on. There’s also a deli, wedding venue, outdoor eating options and even yurts to stay in if the potent Eau de Vie made on site tempts you to put down the car keys for the night. www.merridalecider.com WINE COUNTRY If wine is your tipple you’ll be spoilt for choice. FELLA’S FESTIVAL

GROOMING GUIDE BY BOBBY GORDON OF FELLA, CANTERBURY

Obviously we all go to festivals for music & good times, but fashion now plays a huge role in the festival season. With this in mind it's important to remain clean, stylish & looking good. Here are some practical & recommended grooming products that are compact, fuss free & effective, making them a must for festival survival. 1. WINGMAN DEODORISING WIPES

Wingman have revolutionised the festival tradition of the wet wipe shower. With its soothing aloe vera & cooling peppermint oil, Wingman wipes help remove dirt, bacteria & excess oils that can build up throughout the day. Amazing value for money & a festival must.

2. BATISTE FRESH COOL & CRISP DRY SHAMPOO

This unisex dry shampoo is as liberating for blokes as it is for the babes. It’s the ideal way to instantly clean & freshen up your hair between washes. With no need to queue for the festival wash rooms (if there are any!), you just spray this bad boy 30cm from your head, massage in with your fingertips and volia, you’re good to go!

3. AMERICAN CREW BOOST POWDER

This anti-gravity volume powder with a matt finish will give your festival hair lift & thickness. The weightless powder adds grit for dramatic gravity defying texture & provides a flexible hold. This one is Fella's favourite product of the summer.

4. MEN-U MATT REFRESH & MOISTURISE SET

Perfect for a weekend away this set contains healthy face wash, refresh gel & matt moisturiser. The 15ml tubes mean you will have plenty of space for booze in your bag.

5. P20

Fingers crossed that the sun will be shining this summer. In which case it's so important to protect yourself from those ultra-violet rays. Fella recommends P20 which once applied will protect you for up to 10 hours. Never under estimate the power of the sun, and don’t settle for anything less than the best – as well as staying healthy you want to look your best, and even the most stylish clothes and haircut won’t make up for the crimson catastrophe of a sun burnt bod!

Fella is the destination for sharp haircuts. Founded in 2009 by Bobby Gordon, a 15 year veteran of some of Soho’s hottest hair joints. Fella is located in the heart of Canterbury, and brings a unique boutique feel to the barber shop experience like no other in the area. With no appointment necessary & late night openings you can kick back & listen to some cool beats whilst one of the expert stylists take care of you. Fella has a highly trained & skilled team who pride themselves on grooming for the modern man 84

ONE ON ONE WITH

JEROME HILLION BY JO COSTELLO

It’s not every day you are given the opportunity to have a personal hair styling with a national hairdressing award winner, so I leapt at the chance to spend a few hours in the company of Jerome Hillion at his recently opened personal salon based at The Walpole Bay Hotel, Cliftonville. Jerome met me in the reception of the quirky, charming hotel and by the time the lift had reached the third floor, I was already relaxed and comfortable in his company. For me, this is one of the major benefits of a personal service such as Jerome’s. My main bugbear about hair salons is that I often feel conscious of the noise and the presence of others around me, and as a result am not relaxed and rather rush my consultation. Jerome’s bijou, unique and stylish one-on-one salon is rather like a home visit, albeit rather more luxurious!

British Avant Garde Hairdressing award winner Jerome has carved out an extraordinarily successful career, and until last year ran his own highly successful salon “Moderne London” in trendy Spitalfields, East London. As well as the salon, Jerome was (and still is) a guest artist at Schwarzkopf and Redken Academies, and has enjoyed an international session career doing hair and make up for many fashion designers, artists and private clients. After leading such a hectic and fast paced career, last year Jerome decided to make a serious lifestyle change, relocating his salon to what was previously a “sewing room” on the third floor of the Walpole Bay Hotel, in Cliftonville. From overseeing eight stylist’s in one of the busiest parts of London, to a simple, one-on-one affair by the seaside in East Kent is a dramatic change indeed, but the change will certainly benefit those who descend upon his delightful salon for a personal consultation.

You can feel Jerome’s passion when he discusses your options with you. It’s this passion which, in part, lead to his decision to relocate. He felt that perhaps some of those around him didn’t share his passion for the job in hand, and that working in a one on one environment would ultimately be more satisfying for him. Listening to Jerome’s journey, it is obvious he is an extraordinarily talented stylist, but he is also modest, down to earth, and like his salon, unpretentious. His passion is infectious and his enthusiasm to create something special

here in East Kent is something which can only be hugely positive for the area. Throughout the session I found I was able to allow Jerome to be a little more creative with my hair as I explained my likes/dislikes, my lifestyle, and my preferences without the commotion more commonly associated with a top-end salon. Usually half an inch off would be an extravagance, but confident in Jerome’s skills, and relaxed in the exclusive environment I allowed a good six inches to be cut off into a stylish bob, with one side slightly longer than the other. A style I’d often thought about, but never dared take on.

Jerome also coloured my hair (using organic, ammonia free dyes) caramel, with darker colours underneath. The result, I’m happy to say, was outstanding! Finally, Jerome offered me some invaluable tips on the maintenance and upkeep of my style, and throughout the appointment was generous with both his time and expertise. With more than reasonable rates for such an intimate and rewarding experience, I highly recommend you check out Jerome’s offering at his website www.jeromehillionhairandmakeup.co.uk. 85

PAVELKA TEAMS UP WITH BMI THE CHAUCER HOSPITAL

International health and wellbeing expert Jessie Pavelka has teamed up with BMI The Chaucer Hospital in Canterbury to help East Kent feel inspired, motivated and healthy. Best known for helping change the lifestyles of people on Sky TVs Fat: The Fight For My Life and Obese: A Year To Save My Life, Jessie Pavelka is hoping to encourage people across East Kent with sedentary lifestyles to think differently about exercise and to flex their muscles in the most unlikely of locations. “Within office hours, we commit our lives to work. I’m working with physiotherapists from BMI The Chaucer Hospital and what we’re trying to do with ‘Workout @ Work’ is raise awareness, allowing people to find those little pockets of time and get in ten minutes of exercise, whether it be cardio vascular, a body weight resistance routine or some stretching,” Sitting for too long takes its toll Sitting for long periods without adequate breaks can take a toll on our bodies and minds, leading to sickness or ill health and time away from work. Poor work habits can increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and can lead to stress, depression or anxiety. It is estimated the majority of days lost due to work-related ill-health cost UK employers 10.4 million working days and costs the UK around £15 billion annually in lost economic output. In the run up to ‘Workout @ Work 86

Day’ on Friday 6th June 2014, physiotherapists from The Chaucer Hospital will be encouraging people and employers to improve workplace habits and to introduce simple exercises. Jessie explains why he thinks people are missing a trick by not exercising at work. “When you look at our lifestyles now, everything is go go go. We try to take care of ourselves but by the end of the working day we are exhausted and lack the energy. So you have to be creative, look at your life and come up with a plan. Most of us spend so much time in the workplace it’s a great opportunity to integrate these exercises into your life. I think a lot of us are missing a trick, as it’s not a big change but can make some pretty big differences.” Back to basics “A lot of programmes have extreme moves and may look cool but what we’ve done is go back to the basics,

things that you can do in the workplace. We’ve devised three simple, yet effective workouts; cardio which involves jumping jacks and lunge jumps, we’ve got a toning workout which uses body resistance with push ups and dips, targeting the upper body and it’s also got squats so you’re getting the benefits of cardio and body weight resistance. We also have a static stretching programme, working on flexibility, because when we’re sitting down our muscles are shortened, and we need to lengthen them.” “The workouts aren’t devised purely for fitness. They’re about boosting our wellbeing too; sitting for long periods without a break is not good for our bodies or minds, and eventually takes its toll, which can lead to sickness and ill health and eventually time off work. These three workouts can help boost our motivation and self-esteem too.” Jessie has helped transform the lives of people in front of the camera, and

[health and beauty ]

now he explains that it’s all about accountability. Despite those initial reservations, working out with a colleague might be the key to your success. “You can easily talk yourself out of exercise but if you have that person sitting next to you, you’re both more likely to do it. Maybe you’re having a bad day, but maybe your office neighbour is having a good day and can pick you up, get you moving! Team up with people, or make it a group exercise - go out, walk, train, I encourage that.” Expanding Waistlines When we look at the news these days, expanding waistlines seem to dominate the headlines. We’ve been advised to double our five-a-day fruit and veg intake – a target many already struggle to meet. Is obesity an epidemic that we can do something about before it gets too late? “We are doing something about it”

Jessie says. “The problem is that we are fighting something much bigger that has got a lot more money. It’s almost like a grassroots operation that is happening to combat this massive commercial thing. But as you know, ideas grow, things get bigger and the scale is tipping towards health, though it’s a slow process. People are changing their menus but there’s still a lot to be done.” When it comes to being fit and healthy, the debate continues is it diet or exercise? Jessie has words of encouragement when it comes to sustenance too. “You have to remember that change doesn’t happen overnight, and switching habits; it is uncomfortable. Wake up every day and acknowledge that you have to commit to these changes. “You have to take each choice and decision as it comes and reward yourself with something healthy if you do things right – if you do things wrong, don’t beat yourself up.You have another meal

coming up, so if you eat a bad lunch, don’t eat a bad dinner. Understand food isn’t something to be afraid of, but to enjoy.” The most common diet and exercise myths around “That you can lose weight in a short amount of time – maybe, but you can’t sustain it. Latching on to these gimmicky diet plans just doesn’t work. If you need to lose forty pounds but you think you can do 1000 crunches a day to get a six pack, you need to recognise that the weight loss comes before the six pack. Start with cardio and start eating properly.” For videos and more information, please visit www.bmihealthcare. co.uk/workoutatwork, full Workout @ Work videos and worksheets will be live on the website from Monday 2nd June ready for ‘Workout @ Work Day’ on Friday 6th June 2014 87

STRONG IS THE

NEW SKINNY Health and Beauty writer Amy McManus is put through her paces by JNL Fusion trainer and Fit Girl Factory owner Faye Robertson. I love a good workout, but I also love my food. I have never been a woman who strives to be ‘skinny.’ I personally do not find the size zero look attractive and find myself worrying for the health of the individuals who starve themselves to achieve the same emaciated appearance of their favourite model. That is why I was so thrilled when I met Faye; a like-minded personal trainer who is on a mission to change this pattern. For her, losing weight was the secondary effect of training; it was all about improving your strength, stamina and feeling better within yourself. Naturally I booked in for a session at Fit Girl Factory immediately! I had never heard of JNL Fusion before and to be honest, I didn’t think that a 30 minute session would do that much. Boy was I wrong! The workouts were created by fitness model Jennifer Nicole Lee and introduce cardio between weight training exercises in sets of 30 seconds. The combination of resistance 88

and CV workouts creates a fabulous interval training session of ‘super spiking’ which works you hard. You’re burning off excess weight, but more importantly, improving muscle tone and strengthening your core. I asked Faye how she started Fit Girl Factory and discovered JNL Fusion. “In 2010 I joined a gym, but the gym equipment was confusing and scary. I didn’t know how to put a programme together and I couldn’t identify with the trainers, who were all male. I needed something that was different from the traditional fitness world, which was designed for me. In 2012 I discovered Jennifer Nicole Lee and her exercise method JNL Fusion had me hooked from the start. I started to see and feel a difference straight away; I felt strong, powerful and I was having fun.” Faye’s studio is personal, modern and based above the Wincheap based, private

gym, Exclusive Fitness. From booking to after-care, she is with you every step of the way, sending through emails and helpful tips. “Fit Girl Factory is my mission to get girls and women working out, eating right, feeling great and loving life. You do not need to spend hours in the gym. Life is meant to be enjoyed - be healthy for life and for living. Strong is the new skinny.” If you’re on a plateau, bored at the gym or looking to improve your fitness, I strongly suggest you give Faye a call! SMILING [health and beauty ]

- A SIMPLE WAY TO LOOK AND FEEL GOOD BY RICCARDA KANE - BIRCHINGTON ORTHODONTIC PRACTICE

The next time you are rushing around looking after your children, stuck in traffic, working late, shopping, cleaning and feeling stressed and worn out, try this guaranteed tip to make you feel better - smile! Smiling usually happens spontaneously, when you meet a friend, find something funny or do well at a piece of work. Smiling is nature's way of sharing our happiness with others. Babies quickly learn to smile, copying their parents, as it is the best way to get more love and cuddles. It is just impossible not to smile back at a smiling baby. Whether the smile is real or forced, the effects upon the brain are measurable. Real (or Duchenne) smiles involve far more of the facial muscles than just the lips, especially around the eyes.

Fake or conscious smiles only involve the muscles around your mouth and can hide unhappiness or discomfort, and can reveal your inner thoughts when you get a disappointing birthday present or have to talk to someone you don't like! Although forced smiles can appear transparent and unconvincing, even these smiles trigger the "feel good " feeling in yourself and whoever is being smiled at to an extent. "Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been". Mark Twain

HERE ARE LOTS OF GOOD REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD SMILE: SMILING MAKES YOU ATTRACTIVE We are all drawn to people who smile. Frowns, scowls and grimaces push people away - but a smile will draw them in. It is hard not to smile back at someone who is giving you a big happy smile. "Always remember to be happy because you never know who's falling in love with your smile" Anon SMILING MAKES YOU LOOK YOUNGER Smiling lifts the muscles of your face, enlivens your features and adds a sparkle to your eyes. People will want to know your secret to youth and happiness. "As happy a man as any in the world, for the whole world seems to smile upon me" Samuel Pepys 90

SMILING CHANGES YOUR MOOD The next time you feel glum, try putting on a smile. There is a good chance your mood will improve. Smiling triggers measurable brain activity in your left frontal cortex. Smiling can help to reduce the levels of stress-enhancing hormones like cortisol, adrenaline and dopamine and increase the levels of feel-good chemicals. Smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers and serotonin. Smiling is a natural drug. "Remember even though the outside world might be raining, if you keep smiling the sun will soon show it's face and smile back at you" Anna Lee

SMILING IS CATCHING When someone smiles they light up a room, changing the moods of others. A smiling person brings and spreads happiness with them. "Smile and the whole world will smile with you" Anon SMILING RELIEVES STRESS Stress shows up in our body language and faces. Smiling helps to prevent us from looking tired, worn down and overwhelmed. If you feel stressed, try putting on a smile. You will feel less anxiety and others will notice your face and body language improve. "A smile is happiness right under your nose" Tom Wilson

[health and beauty ] SMILING MAKES YOU SEEM MORE SUCCESSFUL

SMILING KEEPS YOU FEELING POSITIVE

Smiling makes you look more confident in interviews and meetings.Wearing a smart suit will not be enough without a smile to go with it.The people you are talking to will react much more positively to you. After all, everyone wants to work with happy colleagues.

It's hard to think of something very negative when you're smiling.Your body has already been sent a message that " life is good". Stress and worry will reduce if you can manage to smile.

"You're never fully dressed without a smile" Martin Charin

"Wear a smile and have friends, wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?" George Eliot

BEING SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT SMILING Of course many children and adults are self conscious about smiling, because of crooked, gappy, discoloured or uneven teeth. Many people complain that they don't like to show their teeth and laugh or smile covering their mouth, and they often avoid being photographed. This is

a shame, both for well-being and selfesteem. It's especially concerning when parents say it about their children. When you read all the reasons why smiling is such an important part of human communication and good health, to miss out on confident smile can limit your life opportunities and happiness.

It's here where orthodontics can help, and the desire to smile confidently is the point where many of our clients come for their first consultation.

SUMMER BEAUTY ESSENTIALS

Whether you’re on the beach, at a festival or simply out on a daytrip, don’t let your beauty regime wane while you’re off enjoying the gorgeous weather. Beauty buff Amy McManus shows us her favourite products for a radiant summer.

HAIR Summer means several things for hair and not all of them good. You may find that all that sun makes your scalp greasier and therefore needs washing more regularly. If you’re out and about or at a festival, showers are few and far between; excessive washing can also strip your hair of its natural oils and leave it feeling dry. Never fret! When you start to feel the oily roots are too much to bear, spray on Philip Kingsley: One More Day, Dry Shampoo. This lightweight spray refreshes and soothes the scalp, absorbs excess sebum, relives irritation and adds volume. Available in a handy 50ml pocket size at www.feelunique.com £5.95 On a more positive note, Summer is a great time to enrich those highlights without an expensive trip to the hairdressers. Buy a lemon. I’ve been using lemon juice to add natural highlights for years and it really does work. Mix around 120ml of lemon juice with 30ml of warm water. If your hair is dry use 30ml of conditioner. Apply evenly to the hair and sit out in the sun for a couple of hours with your hair on show! (Remember to use sun cream on your skin while you are outside.) Simply repeat this weekly until you reach the results you want. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

FACE

CLEANSING Here’s a great one for all of you festival goers! When water is hard to come by (and beer is too precious to waste on cleansing) then try these beauties! Yes To Cucumbers: Hypoallergenic Facial Wipes gently remove dirt, makeup and most importantly, sweat (without the need to rinse.) Perfect for those of you who cannot find a sink for neither love nor money or just want to quickly freshen up during the day. Ready for this massive list of why they are so good? Here goes... 98% natural; oil-free; non-comedogenic (doesn’t block pores); hypoallergenic; made with compostable, FSC certified fabric; petroleum, SLS & Paraben Free and cruelty-free.Yay! What a load of brilliant reasons to use these wipes. The wipes are also available in carrot, grapefruit, blueberry and...tomato. Pack of 30 available at www.boots.com £3.99 For those of you looking to cleanse and soothe the skin after a day out in the sun, try my homemade cucumber cleansing mask. Take 120ml (½ cup) natural yoghurt, ½ peeled cucumber, 4 large mint leaves and blend them together. Apply to the skin, leave for up to 10 minutes and rinse off with cool water. If you have been sunburnt and are in pain, add ½ a washed potato (yep you read that correctly.) Potatoes are a great pain reliever used by many cultures worldwide, so add them to the mix if you’re feeling particularly sore.

FACE

MAKE-UP The sun is out, hurrah for that! However, before you start rushing out the door to buy ice cream and a sandcastle bucket remember to protect your skin. Even the smallest amount of exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause permanent skin damage so using a high SPF suncream is essential. While you can purchase many fab creams for your body, finding one for your face can be a little trickier. They generally feel very heavy, make the skin look greasy and it is impossible to apply foundation on top of them. I have a solution for you ladies! Perricone MD: No Foundation, Foundation. It feels like a light tinted moisturiser, yet gives all of the benefits of a traditional foundation. Instead of a heavy matt finish the skin glows with healthy dew. That’s not all; it’s completely paraben free and protects the skin with a SPF 30 sunscreen. If you don’t want the ‘dewy look,’ powder can simply be applied on top. Foundation and sunscreen together in a handy 30ml bottle, perfect handbag size. Available from www.perriconemd.co.uk £48.00

BODY Remember to moisturise daily and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to keep hydrated. A sun cream with SPF 30 or higher is recommended if you are going to be in the sun during the day. If you are naughty and get sunburnt there are several natural remedies to help soothe your skin including witch hazel, aloe vera gel and even water soaked green tea bags for sunburnt eyelids. However, one of my favourites has to be good old porridge oats. One cup in cool bath water will calm the burn and help relieve any pain. If you can help it, don’t use a towel when you’re done, dry off in the air. Have an amazing summer everyone. Keep hydrated, stay sun safe and look after yourselves!

REFLECTIONS OF A NEW PRINCIPAL AFTER A YEAR IN POST BY ANTONY SPENCER, PRINCIPAL OF ST LAWRENCE COLLEGE

Not only am I new to St Lawrence College, I am also new to the area, having lived most recently in Bristol. I find Thanet to be a very welcoming place, far more friendly than other areas I have lived. My school reflects this I think, as it is a very warm and supportive community, where supposedly “old fashioned” courtesies like holding open doors for each other continue to thrive. In part, this comes down to the size of St Lawrence; with just 360 pupils in the Senior School and 190 in the Junior School it does have the sense of a tight-knit community. Feeling that academic effort is noticed and rewarded is an essential part of encouraging academic excellence. In a busy school with a very wide range of activities in sport, music, drama etc, a school like St Lawrence is inclined to encourage more overall participation. I have seen already a boy who thought he would never be any good at rugby

becoming a star player, and pupils acting on stage for the first time one day and walking significantly taller in their sense of self-esteem the following day. This sense of belonging and pride spills over into a number of other areas in school, particularly academic and social. I think at St Lawrence we are committed to bringing out the best in every individual child, and to put

genuine care at the heart of what we do. There are no league tables in happiness, confidence and becoming the kind of assured individual who will contribute to society positively all their life. It’s a shame because I think we’d be near the top. Then again, given that league tables can harm rather than encourage a true academic education, maybe it’s no bad thing! www.slcuk.com

JEAN-FRANCOIS CHODECKI MANAGING DIRECTOR OF HOTCRAZE.CO.UK & CORPORATE CREATIONS

In 2006 HOTcraze, a quirky and unusual gadget and gizmo supplier, was formed by husband and wife team Jean-Francois and Christina Chodecki. HOTcraze has grown to the status of Kent’s number one gadget company. After eight years of successful consumer e-commerce, last July the small team moved their base to the Discovery Park in Sandwich, and are now launching an all new promotional based business, the aptly named ‘Corporate Creations’. The tagline “Rethinking Promotional Merchandise” seems to speak for itself, but I caught up with managing director Jean-Francois, to know a bit more about this small Kent company that are offering big things. 1) SO TELL US A BIT ABOUT CORPORATE CREATIONS? Corporate Creations, the B2B arm of HOTcraze, offers its customers bespoke promotional merchandise with a twist! We work hand in hand with our customers to fully understand their marketing needs, their target audience, and the message they are trying to deliver in order to design, create and procure the perfect corporate gift to represent their brand. At no extra cost to the customer no effort is spared in order to ensure the customer is totally satisfied with the end solution. After being in the gadget business for eight years, we’ve built strong relationships with quality manufacturers, so it gives us scope to create something really special and different for our clients. 2) WHAT MADE YOU MAKE THE DECISIONS TO MOVE FROM CONSUMER SALES TO B2B CORPORATE SALES? We found that corporate customers were regularly contacting HOTcraze to have some of our unique gadgets and gizmos branded with their

company logo. From that we started following up on some extensive market research, and the desire of businesses to source unusual and unique corporate gifts to better support their marketing needs. Whether it be a company launch, product or service launch, a seminar, an exhibition etc… HOTcraze decided to launch an additional division namely Corporate Creations to address and serve this market. We found there was a real gap with current promotional gifting businesses sticking to your everyday catalogue gifts. We’ve always loved seeking out new and different products, so why not incorporate that creativity into helping businesses portray their own marketing strategies through the perfect product? 3) WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO LOCATE THE BUSINESS IN EAST KENT?” I moved here with the family in 1997 when I started working for Pfizer. It’s the Garden of England, a lovely part of the country.

4) DO YOU HAVE AMBITIONS TO EXPAND OUTSIDE OF THE KENT BUSINESS HUB? Our desire is to serve local Kent businesses and achieve key successes before expanding the business to be a domestic and global service. 5) WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PROMOTIONAL MERCHANDISE COMPANIES The vast majority of promotional merchandise companies work from a set catalogue leaving their customers to stroll through thousands and thousands of products in hope that they will find one that is right for them. Well Corporate Creations is turning this paradigm on its head and rethinking the promotional merchandise market. (hence the tagline!) We work from a business need to create the right product and not try to shoe horn a product into a need. If you are looking for unique bespoke promotional merchandise call us on 01304 80 60 50 or visit our website: www.corporate-creations.co.uk

I thought it would be OK, but then my teeth moved! I've just finished having treatment again with Riccarda, and I'm so proud of my lovely teeth. I won't make the same mistake again, and I'll definitely wear my retainers this time!

I had a brace when I was younger, but I didn't wear my retainer enough.
