ISSUE TWENTY FIVE

G

reetings Dear Readers, and welcome to the spring edition of East Kent Lifestyle. As the clocks go forward and the days get longer, warmer, and brighter, it’s time to pack up those winter clothes for another few months and embrace the delights of the East Kent coast and countryside. Why not stretch your legs, knock the cobwebs off the bikes which you’ve left languishing in the shed over the last few months and enjoy the new and updated Viking Coastal Trail? The entire route covers 32 miles, from Reculver to Cliffs end along the coast, and then up through the villages of Minster, Monkton, and St Nicholas and back to Reculver. The route we’ve chosen is the 9 miles of splendid coastline from Reculver to Margate and is detailed on pages 16-17. If you fancy a gentler re-introduction to Kent’s countryside then try out the Grove Ferry Walk, a delightful 6 mile trail with splendid open landscape views and wildlife to spot, and an opportunity to take boat trips and admire further an area that was at one time completely underwater. As the evenings grow longer why not take in a “twilight pamper evening” at Pavilion Spa at Eastwell Manor? Nerissa Blower has the lowdown on what’s on offer and you can peruse her review on page 56. If you fancy some top notch nosh in idyllic surrounds then we can highly recommend The Albion Taverna in the backwaters of Faversham, serving Mexican & British cuisine in a boathouse building overlooking Faversham Creek. Check out our review on page 64. Speaking of Mexico, our travel editor Jaillan Yehia has been a busy girl this month and not only has she provided us with tales of a recent Mexican yoga retreat (page 74) but she also found time to take a trip to Rome to peruse her picks of the top local shops and artisans (page 76). With more local reviews, news, views, recipes, fashion, business, and much more besides, we hope you enjoy our latest edition and we’ll see you for the start of the summer! TENTERDEN SCHOOLBOY GETS NATIONAL AUTOSPORT SPONSORSHIP Engine detox specialist EDT Automotive has agreed to sponsor Kent-based motorsport starlet Fred Ling in the 2016 Autosport International British Trials and Rally Drivers Association (BTRDA) Clubmans Rallycross Championship.

other bits. I've also just bought my first road car, a 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa with 85,000 miles on the clock, and I'll definitely be getting the EDT treatment on that - it certainly needs more power!"

Currently studying A-levels at Homewood School in Tenterden, Ling was named best newcomer in the 2015 series despite missing the first round because he was four days too young. He celebrated his 17th birthday the day before this year's Championship began on March 13th at the Blyton circuit in Lincolnshire.

David Holmes, managing director at EDT Automotive, said: "Fred is an exceptional young driver and we're delighted to be associated with him. His car features our new-look branding and fingers crossed we'll see it at the front of the field."

Established in 1977, the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship is known as the wildchild of motorsport. It recently received a boost from Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May competed at Lydden Hill. Fred will drive a Citroën Saxo 1.6i 16V VTS similar to the one used by Hammond. Fred Ling said: "I remember watching my dad do Rallycross and thinking I'd like to do that. Now I am so it really is a dream come true. I won an Autograss event in a 1000cc Mini but it was a big step up last year. My Saxo has modified suspension to cope with both dirt and tarmac, we've got a new engine and the sponsorship from EDT will help us to tweak a few

PORT LYMPNE DINOSAURS TO HATCH ON GOOD FRIDAY This Spring, to coincide with the Port Lympne Reserve’s 40th birthday, visitors will be invited to step into a prehistoric world, as one of the largest collections of life size dinosaurs in Europe hatches, at the award winning visitor attraction. Bob O’Connor, Managing Director said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to announce the arrival of dinosaurs at Port Lympne Reserve. Not only will this be one of the largest collections of life size dinosaurs in Europe, each model will also be totally authentic and anatomically correct.’ Over 100 dinosaurs are expected to stampede into Kent, as part of this new attraction, including favourites such as the T-Rex, Diplodocus, and Pterodactyl. The new dinosaur attraction, set to open on Good Friday (25th March), will offer visitors the chance to journey back in time, whilst a dedicated team

of Rangers will be on hand to tell the story of the animal kingdom as it was millions of years ago. Bob added: ‘I think this is going to be an epic experience, not only will visitors and students be able to learn and understand more about these impressive creatures but they will also be able to become amateur palaeontologists themselves, as they dig for fossils and even create their own dinosaurs to take home.’ For more information about the dinosaur park and Port Lympne Reserve visit their website at: www.aspinallfoundation.org

TRAVEL TO EURO 2016 £10M ABOARD YOUR OWN FOLKESTONE EXECUTIVE AIRCRAFT SPORTS FACILITY A Kent airline is offering the ultimate travel package for football fans heading to the UEFA European Championship this summer.

World Executive Airways has bespoke luxury travel packages for fans keen to support England’s Group matches in June. Sign up and you will be the envy of your friends by flying to France in your own private aircraft. You and up to eight pals (depending on chosen aircraft) will enjoy private return flights from London Ashford Airport in Lydd, a stress-free, swift check-in and Champagne and sandwiches on board – all from less than £333 per person*.

GETS GO AHEAD

A state-of-the-art indoor sports facility in Folkestone has been given planning approval by Shepway District Council. The new centre, which will be situated off Tontine Street, will include an indoor multi-storey skate park, together with modern facilities for climbing, bouldering and boxing, including a potential new home for Folkestone Amateur Boxing Club. Following a series of public consultations in spring 2015, detailed proposals were developed on behalf of The Roger De Haan Charitable Trust, which is funding the £10m project.

WEA’s Jonathan Gordon says: “We’re offering unique and flexible travel options for fans who want to push the boat out and enjoy the championship in style. We’re happy to discuss requirements that meet their needs and budget.

The finished design also incorporates a café for use by people taking part in sporting activities and by spectators, a rooftop function room with views out to the harbour and 32 car parking spaces.

“Choose which aircraft you prefer, the airport you want to fly into, and whether an overnight stay is required and we will provide you with a bespoke price for your flight. For an extra cost, we can arrange private transfers from anywhere in the South East to Lydd as well as offer advice with your ground travel arrangements in France.”

Full wi-fi connectivity will enable transmission of skating competitions to viewers via sporting and social media outlets.

For further information call WEA on 01797 322207, email info@worldexecutiveairways.com or visit www.worldexecutiveairways.com

It is hoped that the centre will appeal to visitors from across the south east of England and beyond, and Shepway residents will be able to use the facilities at special prices.

*

Based on nine people travelling in a Piper Chieftain PA31 to Lille Airport for the June 16 England vs Wales match at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, Lens (total price £2,995). Flights to other Euro 2016 destinations will vary depending on choice of aircraft and selected arrival airport.

The project is believed to be the first multi-storey urban skate park in the world, and has attracted international press coverage and widespread attention amongst the skating community.

Preparation work on the site will begin almost immediately, with construction expected to take between 18 and 24 months. This latest initiative comes off the back of the Charitable Trust’s support for the development of Three Hills Sports Park, as well as a large number of other major sports and recreation projects in the area, and in setting up the Shepway Sports Trust, which will be based in the new centre once it is completed.

VIKING COASTAL TRAIL EAST KENT CYCLE TRAIL

EXTRAORDINARY AND EVER CHANGING Find out why visitors have been coming to this area for centuries. Romans, Saints and Saxons landed here, artists and writers have long drawn inspiration from here. Now you can too! Simply hop on your bike and join the trail at any starting point and do what’s manageable for you.

With a choice of seven cycling routes, there is sure to be something to ignite your interest whether it’s exploring the “Six Churches Ride” where the trail passes six ancient churches before rejoining the coastal trail taking you into the vibrant town of Ramsgate home of the UK’s only Royal Harbour. Ramsgate is always a highly recommended stopping off point on the Viking Coastal Trail – whether it’s stopping off for coffee and cake in one of the many cafes in the area (we highly recommend coffee under the Arches on the edge of Ramsgate Royal Harbour) or trying out a spot of diving or canoeing before picking up the cycle trail at Reculver for a scenic ride into Herne Bay a pretty seaside town with a quaint town museum and home of decent fish & chips!

16

Finding your way around The Viking Coastal Trail is also known as the Regional Cycle Network 15 and well signed throughout with the trail logo and the National Cycle Network. Bicycle options You don’t need a special bike to explore the Viking Coastal Trail. Any mountain bike, Hybrid or road bike will be fine to use. The trail is even suitable for younger children who may be just learning to ride a bike. If you don’t have a bike of your own, don’t let this stop you. Cycle hire is available from the Bike Shed at 71 Canterbury Road in Margate T: 01843 447669 or Ken’s Bike Shop at 28 Eaton Road in Margate: 01843 221422.

Margate to Reculver One of our favourite stretches of the Viking Coastal Trail here at Explore

Kent is the Margate to Reculver route that follows the sea wall from Margate to Reculver via Westgate-on-Sea and Birchington, Kent’s largest village. Joining the trail directly opposite to Margate railway station, the route is well signed – perfect for those who are new to the Viking Coastal Trail or just getting to grips with cycling. This area of the Viking Coastal Trail is particularly interesting as there is plenty of opportunity to stop off to explore coastal delights such as interesting cliff trails, pretty bays and masses of photo opportunities not to mention countless independent cafes and businesses all offering a friendly welcome to cyclists. Most of the route is off road; however a small stretch of on road cycling takes you along the cliff from Westgate-OnSea to Epple Bay where you then rejoin the sea wall.

HAPPY 150TH BIRTHDAY

PERCY POWELL-COTTON!

2016 marks the 150th anniversary of Percy Powell-Cotton, founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum at Quex Park in Birchington. Percy built the Museum in the grounds of his home at Quex House in 1896, to house his growing collection of natural history specimens which he had gathered from his travels to India, Africa and beyond. He also took an interest in the people of the countries he visited and so the collections also contained material that were representative of the cultures he encountered. His wife and children also began collecting, and between them, they gathered over 16,000 objects from the people they met during their expeditions. To celebrate the anniversary of his birth, the Museum has launched a new permanent exhibition called ‘Keeping it in the Family – the story of the PowellCotton Collections’. The exhibition goes into real depth about the story of how and why Percy Powell-Cotton started his museum, and what motivated him to create such a unique collection. Percy was a real pioneer of his time, and many people benefited from his 18

collections, and it furthered scientists’ knowledge of the natural world immensely. And it’s still doing that today. His legacy of preserving the future is still going strong at the Museum today.

The team at the Museum have been into the stores to bring out objects that give a real insight into the founding of the Powell-Cotton Museum and how the family built up their collection. As part of the exhibition the Museum is offering schools and local community groups the opportunity to display their own collections – to become their own curator. A Cabinet of Curiosities will be curated by visitors, displaying their precious and interesting collections, just as Percy would have done as a young man. The Cabinet of Curiosities is part of the Arts Council England ‘100 Objects that made Kent’ Project. From April, visitors can also follow a trail through the Powell-Cotton Museum and Quex House, in the footsteps of Percy, to learn more about him and some of his lesser known interests and activities. The trail will highlight architectural features and technological innovations that interested Percy, and influenced his life.

SANDWICH

AUCTION ROOM

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU EXPERIENCED THE THRILL OF A LOCAL AUCTION?

100 years of antiques and collectables auctioneering experience in this tranquil Cinque Port East Kent town. Formerly Hogbins, running both the Cattle Market selling live stock in the centre of the town and an Antiques and Household Goods Auction, it then became Halifax through the 1980s and 1990s. In 2004 it was revamped as Sandwich Auction Room continuing the tradition of an auction in the town, specialising in antiques and collectables. Kevin Hall and his staff offer a full range of auctioneering services at extremely reasonable rates. Their well-attended monthly auctions attract people from all over Kent and the South East looking for that illusive bargain.

Over the years Sandwich Auction Room has established links with major international auctioneers, securing maximum exposure within the international market. For this reason their items always secure maximum prices. For years now, Sandwich Auction Room has firmly established Sandwich as a hub of antiques and collectibles and attracts to the town visitors from all over the country due to the reputation it enjoys. In November 2013, Sandwich Auction Room featured in the BBC Antiques Road Trip that showcased the work they do, services they offer and the historic beauty of the town. The contribution of the business adds both colour and continuity to the economy of the town, which is undisputable and aims to continue for years to come. Sandwich Auction Room now hosts its monthly auctions in the magnificent venue of St. Mary’s Arts Centre that offers unparalleled spaces and facilities

20

to showcase the breadth and wealth of items up for auction. It is easily accessible by car and other means of transport and brings to life this unique historical building that perfectly fits in with the ethos, culture and tradition of Sandwich Auction Room and the town. The auctions take place on the second Wednesday of every month from 10am and the dates for 2016 are as follows: 13 April, 11 May, 8 June, 13 July, 10 August, 14 September, 12 October, 9 November and 14 December.Viewings of items on offer are always on Tuesdays, before each auction date, from 9am – 4pm again at St. Mary’s Arts Centre.

MARKETING

&

PR,

WHAT DO THEY REALLY MEAN, AND HOW DO I USE THEM IN MY BUSINESS?

BY SARAH WHELBAND

Marketing and PR, it’s the same thing isn’t it? Isn’t it just expensive and a waste of time? It doesn’t really work for my business, it does all right without it, so I’ll give it a miss… We do understand that small business owners don’t have a lot of spare cash, but here’s what we say to that argument. If no-one knows about your company and what you’re selling, then how are you going to make money and grow your business? It’s obvious that the more people know about you, the more people there are to buy from you. But many people get confused about the difference between PR and marketing, and what’s best for their business. So here’s how we break it down. Marketing communicates the value of a product or service in order to sell it. It’s a direct method, you are talking direct to the customer, usually through methods such as emails, newsletters, blogs, brochures, social media and video. PR is slightly different; you are trying to build the reputation of your business. You want to persuade the public to think a certain way, usually using the media to help say it.You talk to the customer through a third party, using indirect methods such as press releases, events, articles, reports, press trips and statements.

It can be said that marketing is the quicker route to increase sales, and it’s easier to track how effective the investment has been – how many people have clicked through to your website from an email, for example. PR is a longer term strategy, it does lead to sales, but by creating a buzz and awareness about the brand – getting someone else to say how great you are is a valuable endorsement. A customer may have read an article in a newspaper, which may then lead to a sale, but it can be harder to demonstrate the return on investment. There’s value in both methods, which is why it’s essential that both are implemented in conjunction with each other as part of an overall communications strategy. The ultimate goal is to hit your target audience from as many angles as possible. There are many marketing and PR tools available to a business owner (we’ve mentioned some above), but it’s important that there’s a well thought out strategy underpinning any activity, otherwise you’ll find that you just won’t see enough return on your efforts. We find this is why most people that say

marketing and/or PR doesn’t work, because there’s no plan! So this is where to start. Think about your customers and what method is best to get in front of them. What publications do they read? What social media platforms do they use? If they read the local paper, think about getting in touch with a journalist to write an article or issue a press release about something particularly newsworthy. If they are use Facebook, think about Facebook ads or perhaps run a competition offering a prize which means they might connect with you to win it. Then think about the timings. What times of the year are important for your business, and also important for your customers? Then marry the two up, if you are reaching them with the messages they want to hear at the time they are looking for your service or product, then you are onto a winner. So, yes, PR and marketing is essential, and it does work, but only with a plan behind it.

FESTIVAL TO FILL CANTERBURY’S STREETS WITH

WISE WORDS! Canterbury’s Wise Words Festival will return to the city for the sixth year between April 30th and May 8th, filling the streets with poetry and performance. Poets on apple boxes, storytellers on the river, street performers popping up in cafes, in gardens and on street corners and your favourite authors and artists in yurts, tipis and in gardens across the city. This is a festival that inspires wonder and curiosity through offering audiences innovative and often unexpected encounters with the arts. There is something for everyone and many events are free. The heart of the festival lies in Canterbury’s Secret Garden, belonging to the Franciscan Friars – an unexpected

haven just a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.Thought provoking talks, music, performances, storytelling and poetry take place in a beautiful yurt, tents and in the ancient Franciscan Chapel. From here activity spills out across the city – onto the streets, in gardens, in coffeehouses and even on the river. This year the festival, which is supported by Arts Council England, Canterbury Connected and Whitefriars Shopping Centre, will be revealing their stunning new venue, a handcrafted yurt to seat over 100 people and funded through a successful crowd-funding campaign. Other venues will include a large canvas tent for family workshops and performances and a village of Bell Tent for tiny tots. The festival will be celebrating two very important literary birthdays through an extended and enhanced family offer. Peter Rabbit, his family and friends will be moving into the gardens to set up a wonderful tea party to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of Beatrix Potter and will be inviting all your little bunnies to join them. Slightly older children will be drawn into the world of Roald Dahl where they will create Revolting Rhymes and enjoy two weekends of performances, music and dancing. These experiences will enhance

22

elements of the festival that audiences have grown to love like storytelling as you drift down the river in a punt and street theatre for all ages. For professional writers and those who want to give writing or poetry a go, there will be performance workshops, writing workshops and day long retreats. Festival Director Raphael Klatzko says, “Wise Words is unique within the literary world because it offers such a wide variety of events, from politically driven performance poetry right through to cream teas with our festival patron Jane Gardam. Alongside poetry there are also shows, puppetry, workshops and plenty of music, ensuring that there really is something for everyone”

STORIES IN THE DARK

LIGHT UP THE BEANEY

A CO-COMMISSION BY THE BEANEY AND THE WHITSTABLE BIENNALE

A unique contemporary exhibition using film, projection and sound opened at The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge in Canterbury on Saturday 19th March. The exhibition is co commissioned by The Beaney and the Whitstable Biennale.

‘Stories in the Dark’ is curated by artist Ben Judd and will feature the work of nine specially selected artists who will use the magic lantern and other items from the Beaney’s unique collections to stimulate and inspire new and contemporary artworks. Invented in the 17th century, the magic lantern is a device akin to modern motion picture projectors. The lanterns created moving projections using oil lamps or candlelight through slides, creating breath-taking shows which brought projected moving images to audiences for the first time. The effect was spellbinding and imaginations were captured. Unsurprisingly, these intricate machines were often used by magicians and conjurers to create enthralling tales of ghosts and spirits. In the digital age, technology is relied upon with little opportunity to understand its mechanisms. The magic lantern’s relatively simple design provides

a clear, slow-motion demonstration of how modern moving images work.

Director of Whitstable Biennale, Sue Jones, said:

On Saturday 16th April, four unique live performances will take place throughout the Beaney. Original Victorian magic lantern machines and beautiful handpainted slides will be used by artists, performers and musicians to create enchanting stories which intertwine Victorian tales with the contemporary.

“We are thrilled to be working with the Beaney to celebrate the very beginnings of cinema in a city with a rich tradition of storytelling. Stories in the Dark brings magic lanterns right up to date with contemporary ideas and technologies, opening up debates that are particularly relevant in our digital age.”

Full details and timings are at www.thebeaney.co.uk.

Stories in the Dark is in the Beaney’s Special Exhibitions Room between Saturday 19 March and Sunday 19 June. Visitors are asked to make a ‘pay what you can’ donation in support of future temporary exhibitions. The exhibition is part of the Whitstable Biennale, which runs from 4 to 12 June, and also forms part of the programme of the University of Kent’s International Festival of Projections, which runs from 18 to 20 March.

Chairman of Canterbury City Council’s Community Committee, Cllr Neil Baker, said: “We are delighted that the Beaney and Whitstable Biennale are working in partnership to host ‘Stories in the Dark’.The exhibition will provide local residents and visitors with the chance to enjoy contemporary works by some of the most exciting artists in the UK” 27

EAST KENT LASTING LEGACY FOR CHILDREN IN

Charities and groups which benefit children and their families in East Kent are sharing a £28,000 windfall, thanks to the latest awards made by the Albert Burns Children’s Trust Fund, managed by Kent Community Foundation. The Albert Burns Children’s Trust Fund was created in memory of Thanet businessman Albert Burns who left instructions in his Will for his legal advisors Boys & Maughan Solicitors to create a lasting legacy for children. He particularly wanted to support smaller charities that don’t have the resources of the larger children’s charities. Boys & Maughan Solicitors work with Kent Community Foundation who manage the grant-making on their behalf and direct funding to local children’s groups and charities where it will make a significant impact locally. This year’s awards have been made to the following organisations: 1) Pegasus Playscheme, East Kent: to run their annual summer playscheme for disabled children and young adults aged between 8 and 25. This scheme also provides a period of respite for the participant’s family and carers. 2) Special Needs Advisory & Activities Project, Herne Bay: for days out for families with disabled children, helping them to access local mainstream events, activities and attractions that they would otherwise not be able to attend. 3) Home Start Canterbury & Coastal: for the Family Support Group: LETS PLAY! This group is

for parents and their children (aged under five) to practice physical activity, healthier lifestyles and family health and wellbeing through a variety of activities.

applications were an excellent fit for Mr Burns’ wishes to support local children’s charities and we are looking forward to seeing how his bequest is put to good use.”

4) Friends of St. Nicholas Special School, Canterbury: to part fund wheelchair accessible play equipment as part of a complete redevelopment of the outside play space. This play equipment helps them to develop physical control in order to prevent deterioration and improve their overall wellbeing.

“We are delighted to be working with Kent Community Foundation. They have enabled us to establish a significant legacy fund that will continue to benefit local communities for years to come, and means to reach out to many more Kent children’s charities than would have been possible if we had attempted to manage the trust independently.”

5) Demelza Hospice Care for Children, Sittingbourne: for the laundry upkeep in the hospice, which is in-keeping with Albert Burns’ laundrette business history. The housekeepers and housekeeping volunteers begin work on the laundry at 5am and work all day washing, ironing and folding clothes and towels to ensure everything is clean and fresh for the children and families staying for respite and short breaks. 6) The Aiden Goodwin Foundation, Bexley: to provide short breaks for children with cancer and their families, to give them time to be away together and to help create memories to keep forever in their hearts.

Andy Garrett, KCF: “We support a vast array of fantastic projects throughout Kent, many of which are doing amazing things to help disadvantaged children and young people. So many of these projects are volunteer-led and make a life-changing difference to vulnerable young people in our county. We are so thrilled that Mr Burns’ generosity and passion to support these projects can live on beyond his lifetime.”

Albert Burns Children’s Trust Fund trustee and partner at Boys & Maughan, Robert Moulsdale, said: “This year’s successful funding 29

ACADEMY FM BACK FROM THE BRINK…

In November 2015, The Board of Trustees at Academy FM Thanet, called a meeting of the volunteers to notify them that they intended to close down Thanet's only locally based radio service in December due to a lack of funds to keep the radio station running. The volunteers, who all give up their time freely to broadcast a mixture of local news, community information and music to the Isle of Thanet were shocked and surprised at hearing this news and appealed for financial help in keeping the radio station going. It's now March 2016 and Academy FM Thanet is still broadcasting. So what's changed? I caught up with the team there to find out more. So what's happened? "We're still here!" said Doc Atherton, one of Academy FM's new trustees. "It's been a tough few months. The station was due to close on December the 18th 2015. At the time I was just volunteering my services as a broadcaster and I was very saddened to hear that this radio service was likely to close down." Doc continued, "The Board of Trustees of Academy FM announced the radio station would close as it had become 'increasingly difficult to raise sufficient 30

funds to meet running costs'. But I disagreed with them as did many of the other volunteers. So we started a campaign to save the radio station. We got both of Thanet's MP's involved too who were really supportive of our campaign. When the news of its impending closure had been announced, Craig Mackinlay, MP for South Thanet commented, “Academy FM provides an important outlet for local charities and community groups across Thanet to get their message out to the people. It would be a real loss to the area if funding cannot be found to keep this service on the air.” Sir Roger Gale MP for North Thanet said, “Academy FM has proven itself as a popular local radio station, I hope that it can continue as the void will be difficult to fill.” 107.8 Academy FM is a charity, community radio station and a non-profit company set up to serve the community of Thanet. Based in premises supplied by

the Royal Harbour Academy School in Ramsgate, they rely on the generosity of the local business community for Donations and Charitable Trusts for Grants, to ensure that they have the necessary funding to continue operating and provide entertainment, local news and information. However, under recent changes by OFCOM they are now allowed to take a certain amount of paid for advertising. Doc said "Funding the station is not easy. During our appeal, the generosity of Thanet residents was unbelievable. It enabled us to approach the (now previous) trustees and persuade them not to close the station in the December and to give us time to come up with a rescue package. They graciously gave us until the end of January 2016.Thanks to some larger donations we secured, we were able to demonstrate to the trustees that the station could and should continue"

[feature ]

Although the volunteers appeal to save the station had impressed the trustees, they felt that they had brought Academy FM as far as they could, but they were willing to pass the baton to new trustees if suitable individuals could be found. In the last week in January, it was announced that the radio station had been saved from closure and that new trustees had taken over looking after it. So who are the new trustees? The new chairman of The Academy FM Thanet Trust,Vic Todd is also the community governor at the school. He said, "The school has a great affinity for Academy FM. I was approached to become a trustee by the volunteers as not only do I love what Academy FM does, but it would also help to provide a link to the school who's building we use to house us." He continued, "We then approached Roger Heald. Roger had worked for a number of years within the BBC. He moved to Thanet about 5 years ago and fell in love with the station and wanted to

help. It was the logical thing to ask him to help" And of Doc Atherton? "He's been volunteering at Academy FM since it first started broadcasting 6 years ago" said Vic. "I think it's important that someone from the volunteer side of things should be on the board of trustees and Doc's broadcasting experience over the years on a number of radio stations in Kent such as Invicta FM and KMFM gives us someone who really understands the actual broadcasting side of things. He was also born and bred in Thanet so his input really is invaluable." Academy FM's station manager Bob Mower said: "I am very happy that the radio station continues to broadcast. As a charity run radio station, I'm very grateful to our listeners for their support and also their financial contributions during the period of transition which enabled new trustees to take over. It just shows how great the community in Thanet is!"

So is it all now plain sailing for Academy FM Thanet? "Not quite" says Roger Heald. "More funding is still required but we are in a better position now. As a charity, it's not always easy to get people to part with money to keep the station running, however, OFCOM have relaxed the rules that govern community radio funding as we are now allowed to take a limited amount of advertising, which will certainly help! We have a lot of work ahead of us but I for one am sure that the station will continue to build on its successes. So we're definitely on the lookout for local businesses who wish to advertise. Not only do they get their message out there, but they also help to keep Thanet's only LOCAL Radio service to keep running" To advertise on Academy FM or to make a donation, you can contact Debbie Day, their fundraising manager at: debbie.day@academyfmthanet.com or telephone 07764 479722.

Normann Copenhagen Ikono Pendant Lamp

LIGHTING THE PAPILLON INTERIORS, FORT HILL, MARGATE

MUUTO E27 PENDANT LAMP The Muuto E27 departs from the essence of a lamp - the socket – creating a simple yet strong object that celebrates the potential beauty in simplicity. The simplicity of the naked bulb is hard to compete with. It represents something that feels romantic and contemporary at the same time. When choosing lighting for the Dining room it is really important that you bring out the best of the rooms features, ideally offering both comfort and a formal aspect to the space. The Dining room is often an area in which you would entertain guests and thus the dÊcor and lighting give you a great chance to really show your taste, style and create your own unique space for you and your guests to enjoy. It is with this thought in mind that the use of the Muuto E27 Pendant Lamp in a Dining environment really offers a beautifully elegant glow to the dining area whilst not being too distracting or harsh ensuring to only improve the overall Dining experience.

Lighting can change an environment from a quiet evening space or a busy social area at the touch of a button. The Ikono offers a very warm and ambient lighting that brings real character and style to any room. In a lounge area or reading corner it really excels, offering a subtle soft light perfect for relaxing with a good book or an evening with friends.Truly atmospheric piece with a real classic feel, a great feature for a comfortable space in your home.

PLUMEN 001 ORIGINAL The Plumen 001 Original offers a really stylised and simplistic look, with its bare bulb look and brightly coloured chord choices it can bring a burst of colour to the most simplistic of rooms. Choosing lighting for a family area is really about finding something that will offer a warm inviting space in which you can learn and create together.

34

VITA SILVIA PENDANT LAMP The Vita Silvia Pendant Lamp is such a beautiful piece that it can really change the focus of a room, a real statement piece of lighting. When considering lighting for the Bathroom, it is often something that is thought out purely in a practical sense, i.e good lighting for shaving and applying makeup etc

Plumen 001 Original

Vita Silvia Pendant Lamp

[homes & interiors ]

However the Bathroom is becoming a place to relax and find solitude and thus should be treated as so, making an environment in which you can relax and enjoy your surroundings whilst offering the practicalities of necessary lighting. The Silvia Pendant Lamps offer a unique look to any bathroom whilst offering great lighting, really making it a relaxing and practical space.

LIGHT YEARS LULLABY PENDANT LAMP When considering lighting for the bedroom and closet areas you want something with a muted light so as not to cause a bright and uncomfortable glair in the room, this maintains a comfortable, soft and even romantic look to the room. Brighter lighting is better suited to the dressing table for functional purposes.

Light Years Lullaby Pendant Lamp

Choosing soft and warm light in the room means the room can be dim enough to relax but not so dark that you cannot see your way around. The Lullaby Pendant Lamp is a simplistic and delicate Lamp, created with Organic materials; Stone paper with Ash Lamellae. Creating a Pentagonal shape that gives a soft and warm glow, really offering a cosy and welcoming atmosphere to the room.

AVIVO GLASS BALLS The moment you open the front door to a visitor the dĂŠcor and lighting is the first thing they see and needs to be considered with care. Hallways come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The challenge is to achieve the desired effect in keeping with the furnishings, decorations and period in which the building was constructed. The style of light used depends to a great extent on the height of the ceiling and the size of the space. A long room with a high ceiling might lend itself to two or more pendants and a strategically placed table lamp on a hall table. Multiple pendant fittings make a nice feature hanging over a stairwell and provide an even light over the stair treads. A beautiful and elegant chandelier will create a real impact within an area with a roof height ceiling. These stunning pieces are designed especially for maximum effect in a large space that can easily be forgotten.

VITA FEATHER LIGHT Whatever the size of your bedroom you probably use it for more than just sleep. Dark bedrooms are great for sleeping but too little light hinders you from doing much else. It is really important to understand the size and height of the bedroom to ensure the light reaches all areas. Decide what you want to do in the room, choose appropriate lighting. Reading nooks in the bedroom need directed lighting, for sitting areas look for softer, shaded fixtures. Ambience is also important in the bedroom. Install dimmers on lights to alter the effect, and softer or coloured light bulbs can change a room's mood.

GRASS THE

BEFORE

IS ALWAYS

GREENER BY PETE NICHOLS & BRIAN THOMAS OF THOMAS MEWS LTD

Thomas Mews Ltd is a father and son run family business who offer what they call a “from planning to planting” service, which covers every aspect of construction and landscaping from the front gate to the back gate and everything in between. From renovations to refurbishments, house builds to garden landscaping and patios to driveways, Thomas Mews Ltd can deliver without having to rely on sub-contractors. MD Brian Thomas says, “We’ve been in construction and landscaping for many years, working with major house builders and architects, delivering new builds, extensions, brickwork, ground works, paving, driveways, underpinning, installing play areas, synthetic grass, tree and shrub planting and fencing. In 2014 we decided to come away from mainstream contracting and focus on domestic households and small developments which has proven to be positive and

BEFORE

38

rewarding. Two areas in which we have seen a lot of interest is in the use of synthetic grass, and, due to the continually improving technologies, the move from traditional block paving, loose gravel or tarmac to resin bound driveways and paths.”

SYNTHETIC GRASS

Synthetic grass has come a long way since the very first “fake” grass or “astro turf ” alternatives to real grass came on the market. Nowadays the highest quality artificial grass is almost

indistinguishable from the real thing, only with an abundance of advantages to the consumer. Experts in the supply and fitting of synthetic grass, Thomas Mews Ltd use only the finest quality grasses and are experienced in fitting jobs of any nature, from the simplest of backyards, to the most elaborately landscaped garden. The most immediate advantage most people recognise when opting for artificial grass is that it is such a low-maintenance product. No more muddy lawns in the winter and no more mowing in the summer. How many of us have filled a paddling pool in summer, only to find a bare patch of scrubland when it’s time to pack it away again for the year? Or have resigned ourselves to a huge round area devoid of any sort of plant life below our children’s trampoline? With a good synthetic grass none of this need ever be a concern again. Having recently had our back garden decked out in synthetic grass, I can tell you from first-hand experience that it is a joy to look out of the window every morning and see your lawn looking as immaculate as it did the day it was laid – and all without having to do a single spot of maintenance!

[homes & interiors ]

BEFORE

and can work out anything from 20% - 40% cheaper than the full installation depending on the nature of the job.

OVERLAY

FULL INSTALLATION A robust and thorough installation process will ensure that your new lawn will last for years to come; in fact, all Thomas Mews installations come with a 10 year guarantee. The first step is to dig down 100mm (as you would when laying a patio for instance), before putting down a layer of Type 1 (a limestone granular material which is compacted with a wacker plate). On top of this a layer of sharp sand is added to smooth down the surface and to ensure there are no lumps and bumps. Then a permeable geotextile membrane is laid which will prevent weeds coming up but, importantly, allows water to drain down. Water is also able to drain through the sand and through the type 1, meaning that you are never left with puddles on your lawn. In fact, a good synthetic lawn, installed properly will dry in a fraction of the time of a real grass lawn. After the membrane, the grass itself is laid and pinned down using galvanised six-inch u-pins every 300mm. Finally a layer of fine silver sand is spread over the entire grassed area and helps the blades stand up. Thomas Mews grasses come in two types; “Foreland” which is tri-colour and uses different shades between green and brown, which give the grass an incredible realistic look and the “Special” which is somewhat lighter, not so dense or thick, but still almost impossible to tell apart from the real thing.

a recycled plastic edging as a) it won’t degrade, and b) it is pliable, versatile, and can follow the contour of your desired lawn shape.

BUDGET INSTALLATION

Although the full installation is recommended for most lawns, there are occasions when a budget installation is the sensible option. For example, if the lawn is predominantly decorative, rather than for everyday use (for example for a small front lawn where otherwise you might see paving slabs), then it needn’t be so hard wearing. In these instances you would forgo the type 1 and simply lay a membrane, followed by sharp sand, another layer of membrane, then grass. Although not recommended for dealing with heavy traffic it is still a durable surface with good draining,

Synthetic grass can also easily be laid on hard surfaces such as concrete, tarmac, or decking. It is simply a case of drilling seep holes into the concrete or tarmac (to allow drainage), then laying the membrane and the grass on top which is then screwed and glued into place. Once your grass is down, the only maintenance you’ll ever need to do will be to maybe run the vacuum cleaner over it once in a while, or make sure the blades are standing to attention with a stiff broom. No more mowing, strimming, or weeding, and no more muddy boots, clothes or children. Time after time this sterling actor has given us exceptional performances on screen, but when it came to Academy Awards, he was left out in the cold.

Leonardo DiCaprio BY NERISSA BLOWER

45

[cover story ] After six nominations spanning two decades in the film industry, DiCaprio, 41 was finally honoured for his latest role which involved battling wintry conditions and a brutal bear attack. Nerissa Blower investigated this actor’s exhaustive career and why his roles; from mentally challenged teen to the American anti-hero, make him so to compelling to watch. Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio was born in California and was the only child of secretary Irmelin and comic book writer George DiCaprio. His mother, Irmelin was born in Germany and was of German and Russian ancestry and his father, George was of mixed German and Italian descent. DiCaprio allegedly got his first name after his pregnant mother visited an art gallery in Italy. Irmelin was looking at a painting by Leonardo da Vinci when she felt her unborn child kick for the first time. She saw this as a sign that her son should be named after the great Renaissance artist. The family lived in California but DiCaprio was raised mostly by his mother when his parents divorced a year after he was born. DiCaprio starred in several commercials and educational films as a youngster, including small parts in The New Lassie and popular US sitcom, Roseanne. The actor made his debut film role in lowbudget horror flop, Critters 3 and became a recurring cast member in family sitcom, Growing Pains. In 1993 whilst still a teenager, DiCaprio took on a huge challenge by playing a mentally handicapped boy in What’s

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio at the Los Angeles premiere of 'Revolutionary Road' held at the Mann Village Theater in Westwood Eating Gilbert Grape opposite Johnny Depp. DiCaprio was praised for his performance and was honoured with a National Board of Review Award and received his first Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Following this success, DiCaprio featured in many minor or arthouse movies including Total Eclipse, Don’s Plum and Sam Raimi’s western, The Quick and the Dead which failed to make an impact at the box office. Despite his young years, DiCaprio proved his capacity to take on difficult and often controversial roles that could prove risky for other fledgling actors. In 1995 he

played troubled poet Jim Carroll in the biopic, The Basketball Diaries. Despite receiving mixed reviews, this dark, drugfuelled tale solidified DiCaprio’s ability as a leading man. DiCaprio achieved world-wide recognition in 1996 when he played Romeo in Baz Luhrmann’s adaption of Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet. DiCaprio played opposite fellow rising star Claire Danes as the star-crossed lovers in this quirky and stylised take on the tragic tale. The film, praised for its use of original Shakespearian dialogue against an iconic, modern backdrop was a huge triumph and grossed $147 million worldwide in box office sales. If portraying the hapless lover from the most famous story of romance and tragedy wasn’t enough, DiCaprio further propelled his image as silver screen heartthrob in the 1997 film, Titanic. The actor took on the role of poverty-stricken yet charming immigrant Jack Dawson who falls in love with spirited aristocrat Rose DeWitt Buckater on board the iconic and ill-fated cruise liner. DiCaprio initially refused the role, but director James Cameron could see the potential of the young star and persuaded him to sign up.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy at the Los Angeles premiere of 'The Revenant' held at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood 46

The movie was a gigantic hit with audiences across the globe and it became the highest grossing film to date, making $1.843 billion at the box office. This record was only superseded by Cameron’s visually stunning science fiction film, Avatar in 2010.

[cover story ] DiCaprio’s profile as a handsome and talented Hollywood star was boosted by his huge fan base and he became a regular in teen magazines and publications.

thriller, Blood Diamond, an undercover police officer in mob crime drama The Departed and a US Marshal in psychological thriller, Shutter Island in 2010.

The actor’s next large movie role was playing two characters – the tyrannous King Louis XIV and his sympathetic brother Philippe in 1998 period drama, The Man in the Iron Mask. The film had mostly mixed to negative reviews but was a financial success at the box office, presumably for featuring the biggest star in Hollywood at the time. DiCaprio was applauded for his attempt to play two roles, but his youth and inexperience was criticised by reviewers and he was awarded a Golden Raspberry for his performance.

DiCaprio made a huge impact in his next titular role in science-fiction thriller, Inception. The film directed by Chris Nolan tells the story of a people with unique abilities to enter dreams and obtain information. DiCaprio saw the potential for this ambitious and fantastical film and took a pay cut of $20 million and agreed to receive payment via ticket sales. This risky manoeuvre paid off and the actor earned $50 million, his largest pay check to date.

In 2000 DiCaprio played a backpacking student who stumbles across a secret commune in Danny Boyle’s The Beach. DiCaprio again found himself in another financially successful movie although the response from critics was less than lukewarm. As a result he was nominated for his second Golden Raspberry Award. DiCaprio gained back some credibility when he portrayed con artist Frank Abagnale Jnr in 2002’s Catch Me If You Can. The film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks as FBI agent Carl Hanratty, Abagnale’s pursuer in an epic cat and mouse game was DiCaprio’s most successful film since Titanic. The actor’s ability to portray an extremely charming, confident criminal with a dark and troubled side appealed to movie critics and audiences worldwide and he was nominated for a Golden Globe for the third time in his career.

Abandoning his usual charismatic protagonist roles, DiCaprio played villain Calvin Candie in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained in 2012. The controversial Western was a success and DiCaprio received his ninth Golden Globe nomination. Seventeen years after Romeo + Juliet, DiCaprio paired up with Baz Luhrmann again in 2013’s The Great Gatsby. Adapted from the 1925 novel, DiCaprio played the lead role opposite British star Carey Mulligan as Gatsby’s love interest. Described as maddeningly enigmatic by critics, DiCaprio was celebrated for his portrayal of the iconic American businessman. Securing his well-loved depiction of charismatic con men and anti-heroes, DiCaprio took a more modern approach

to the successful financier in The Wolf of Wall Street. Another collaboration with Scorsese, the film depicts the life of stockbroker Jordan Belfort who achieved success and financial gain through fraud and money laundering from the 1980s to 1990s. DiCaprio was awarded a Golden Globe and yet another Academy Award nomination. DiCaprio pushed himself to the extremes of human capability by starring in the physically gruelling film, The Revenant released in 2015. DiCaprio played the role of fur trapper Hugh Glass, who surpasses extreme wintry conditions and horrifying injuries to seek vengeance on an enemy. The semi-historical drama was one of DiCaprio’s biggest challenges for a movie role as the actor battled exposure to freezing temperatures, bouts of sickness and fever due to prolonged filming sequences in snow and icy water and eating raw liver despite being a vegetarian. The film was revered by critics and DiCaprio was commended for his convincing, memorable performance against an unforgiving environment. The actor deservedly won a Golden Globe and his first ever BAFTA and Academy Award for Best Actor. A dedicated environmental campaigner, DiCaprio used his acceptance speech at the Academy Awards ceremony to urge viewers to support political leaders in the fight against climate change.

In the same year DiCaprio appeared in Gangs of New York directed by Martin Scorsese. Production of the film was turbulent, with arguments amongst the director and production team, major expenditures and an arduous eight-month long shoot. Despite these complications, DiCaprio was commended for his role and the film was a box office hit. Scorsese and DiCaprio paired up again in 2004 for the biopic of business tycoon Howard Hughes in The Aviator. DiCaprio’s portrayal of the playboy entrepreneur was well received and the actor was awarded a Golden Globe and nominated for an Academy Award. The following years DiCaprio continued to revel in strong lead roles despite narrowly missing major award wins. In 2006 he played a smuggler in political

ASHFORD ONE OPENS FOR BUSINESS State-of-the-art hospital using pioneering technology to improve patient care Hospital creates 90 new jobs as it launches. One Ashford Hospital (One Ashford), a new £30 million private hospital developed by the One Healthcare Group, has finally opened its doors to patients. The hospital, which has been funded by Octopus Healthcare, a leading UK healthcare property investor and part of the Octopus Group, has created 90 jobs in Ashford as it aims to provide the very best level of care for local people.

Adrian Stevensen, CEO of One Healthcare, said: “We are very excited that One Ashford is now open and working alongside William Harvey Hospital can help care for patients in the area. Our objective is to provide the very best level of care for local people, delivered by leading consultants, in state-of-the-art, well equipped and purpose-built hospital facilities.

Located next to the NHS William Harvey Hospital, One Ashford offers state-of-the-art, well equipped and purpose built hospital facilities for people looking for private healthcare. Treatment will be offered by over 90 of the leading consultants providing high quality care to patients. It is the first One Healthcare hospital to be built as part of a planned UK-wide line-up of private hospitals developed by the company.

“We are especially pleased to welcome a number of nurses and clinicians from St Saviour’s Hospital in nearby Hythe which closed last year, who bring with them their fantastic experience while ensuring there will be familiar faces to many local patients.”

Modelling itself on innovative diagnostic and surgery centres in Australia and the US, One Ashford pioneers the use of technology to improve patient experience and outcomes. It is the first private hospital in to have a fully electronic integrated care pathway – electronic records from referral to the completion of a patient’s treatment.

Rt Hon Damian Green MP for Ashford said: “It is a pleasure to welcome the opening of a new hospital in Ashford. Any increase in medical capacity in the area is good news, as it helps reduce waiting times. I know that the One Ashford Hospital team have been working closely with the William Harvey Hospital, and I am sure this will continue into the future. I am delighted

to see another highly advanced hospital open for people in Kent, and I wish all the staff well.” The hospital’s facilities include: ten consulting rooms; three operating theatres; four treatment rooms; and a new generation MRI scanner and radiology department. One Ashford has also invested in a unique online booking facility, whereby a patient is able to book a consultation, physiotherapy or radiology appointment online and within 90 seconds. The facility offers the ability to select by named consultant or next available appointment. One Healthcare is encouraging prospective patients to come and visit the new hospital and meet the team so they can see firsthand the new facilities and the commitment to deliver high quality care.

SOULFUL MILES BAR GEARS UP FOR

SATURDAY NIGHTS

Miles Bar, one of the most recognisable and universally popular bar/restaurant/nightspots in Ramsgate has, over the years, shown a commitment to putting on some of the best Soul, R’n’B, and Club Classics nights around. Now, after recognising the popularity and potential of their occasional forays into ‘Saturday Night Soul’, Miles Bar will be dedicating every Saturday night from 10pm until the early hours to a host of top flight soulful artists and DJ’s. Predrinks will be available in the lower bar from 8pm-10pm, including a new range of cocktails (look out for special offers). Miles traditionally attracts a slighter more ‘mature’ audience than many of the bars and clubs in the area, and this is reflected in the choice of music. In the coming weeks the likes of renowned r’n’b singer Sandra Cross and Solar Radio’s peerless DJ James Anthony will be wowing the customers with their wealth of industry experience, and resident DJ’s Gary B. Ben Neeves, and Kevin Webb will be spinning their pick of soulful grooves and club classics until the early hours of Sunday morning. Anyone concerned about their Saturday night dinner reservation need not fret. The restaurant will still be open until shortly before 10pm, after which the tables and chairs will be discreetly stored away, and the state of the art PA system assembled, quickly turning the restaurant into wonderful space to dance the night away whilst enjoying spectacular views across the harbour. If you wake up and feel the need to shake off a great night out with a bracing stroll and a strong coffee then don’t forget that Miles Bar is open daily from 8am serving breakfast and some of the best coffee in town!

DELIGHTFUL DAYS INDULGENT EVENINGS AT THE PAVILION, EASTWELL MANOR

If you fancy a bit of indulgence this Easter, then look no further than Eastwell Manor.

The epitome of luxury and decadence, the historic manor house situated in the Ashford countryside of Boughton Lees is a rural retreat for those seeking to soothe mind, body and spirit with a range of pampering packages. The spa is located in The Pavilion which is just a short walk from the manor house. On my arrival my companion and I were greeted by a team of friendly staff in the lavish reception and was given a full tour of the premises. The 'welcome' included hot drinks (from English black tea to more healthy, herbal varieties) served with delicious white chocolate and

cranberry cookies.Within the 'Twilight Package' we were asked to choose a 25 minute treatment each and select options from a two course meal later in the evening. The package is tailor-suited to each guest, so you can choose your treatment and dinner times whenever you desire.

First on the agenda was a visit to the pool. Reception staff gave us keys for our lockers, which each contained a dressing gown, towel, embroidered fluffy white slippers and complimentary chocolates all wrapped up in a beautiful package. It was clear that attention to detail was important at Eastwell Manor and every aspect of the spa experience was lovingly catered or crafted. A functional masterpiece of tranquillity and beauty, the 20 metre heated pool is pivotal to the class and elegance of the spa.The pool is stylised as an ancient Roman temple with floor to ceiling columns set against a backdrop of painted murals of Mediterranean countryside. During the day the large elegant windows filter in natural light and as the sunlight wanes, soft lighting overhead and within the water set the pool aglow. The sparkling clean, clear water and the quietness of the pool made the facility a peaceful and joyful experience. To the north of the room lies a large hydro pool concealed behind a trickling wall of water. This pool includes a number of button-operated jet streams

and bubbles designed to melt away the tension of the day. There is also a separate jacuzzi, steam and sauna room available for guests to use throughout their day. The changing rooms (separate for ladies and gentlemen) include private shower units with luxury shampoos and shower gels. The ladies even have access to a well-lit dressing room complete with wall-length mirrors, multiple hair dryers, cotton buds and pads for makeup removal. Guests also have full use of the Silks Lounge before or after treatments. This relaxing space, filled with soft oriental themed furnishings and access to refreshments and reading materials is the perfect place to unwind and has some fantastic views of the manor grounds. If you are looking for a more active way to let off some steam, the Pavilion also includes a Gymnasium with a tennis court, outdoor swimming pool and pétanque and croquet lawns in the formal gardens which can all be accessed depending on the package you choose. In the summer months, the outdoor pool is an absolute must.Twenty metres of crystal clear water flanked either side by rows of sun loungers in the gloriously peaceful surrounds of the manor’s extensive landscaped gardens. After a brisk swim in the heated pool, you can warm up even more by stepping straight into the adjoining hot-tub to really raise your temperature – or just chill out with a good book and a cool drink under one of the sunshades on the surrounding patio.

lotions on display whilst waiting for our sessions. For someone who suffers from tension in the upper half of their body, I opted for the head, neck and shoulder massage. Serene music, soft blankets and warm lighting waited for me in my private treatment room. My masseuse instantly put me at ease with her friendly and professional manner and I was treated to 25 minutes of bliss. The only criticism was that it went too quickly! If massage is not your thing, there are many other treatments to choose from including mini facials, dry floatation therapy, or nail and hand treatments. Our evening concluded with a light supper in the Pavilion Restaurant. As we had already made our selections during the welcome, all we had to do was turn up and wait for our meals to arrive. For starters I had a delicious pancetta and cheese salad with baby rocket and my companion went for tomato soup. For the main meal I chose salmon with a creamy sauce and my companion had pork loin. The ingredients were fresh and every dish was full flavoured and beautifully presented. After an afternoon and evening of pampering, tiredness had kicked in so the lightness of the meals were very much appreciated and were the perfect way to round off the day.

It is very rare for such a place to delight me, but Eastwell Manor has all the charm, beauty and luxury to soothe the most stressful souls. The staff are attentive, polite and mindful of your need for space and the breath-taking beauty of the spa and surrounding scenery is second to none. The facilities and nearby accommodation at the manor house make it an ideal for a romantic short break for you and your partner; or a spa package could be just the thing to pamper a loved one for the day.

The Twilight Spa Evening at Eastwell Manor starts at £90 each and is available on Thursdays or Fridays from 3pm. For more information or to view many more packages on offer, visit: www.eastwellmanor.co.uk or phone: 01233 213000.

Donning warm dressing gowns and soft slippers, my companion and I arrived at the beauty spa, Dreams at the Pavilion ten minutes before our treatments. The reception area is hosted by a welcoming team of therapists and we were able to sample some high-end beauty creams and 57

KING ofBARS

BY PETE NICHOLS

CLIQUE BRINGS CONTINENTAL CLASS TO THE KENT COAST It’s no exaggeration to say that driving along Royal Parade from the west cliff down past Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour towards the main sands, the view which spreads out before you rivals anything on offer from the French Riviera. Wonderful architecture, stunning sea views, boats bobbing gently in the harbour, and a smattering of restaurants, bars, and hotels stretching the length of Harbour Parade. The latest addition to the list of hostelries overlooking Britain’s only Royal Harbour, Clique Bar, has arrived to bring a little of the glamour and glitz of our continental cousins to the Ramsgate coast. Clique Bar, which has been described as “Marbella comes to Ramsgate”, is owned and run by the Florides family and oozes style and sophistication. After a cursory look around it’s evident that there has been no expense spared in bringing George Florides and his sister Yianna’s vision to life. George spent some time living and working in Dubai, while his sister has been running a business in London for several years, and both felt that we could learn a thing or two about how to enrich the nightlife experience from the most opulent city in the United Arab Emirates, and the world’s most fashionable Capital. And why not? The East Kent Coast is experiencing higher levels of migration from the capital and beyond than ever

58

before; broadsheets newspapers are heralding Ramsgate as “The New Shoreditch” with the influx of cash-rich DFL’s snapping up coastal properties and making a life for themselves in our corner of the Garden of England. With new money comes new expectations; we already have some great pubs and bars, but if ever the time was right for a stand-out bar exuding exclusivity and offering a high-end experience in our midst – then that time is upon us. Enter Clique Bar. Clique Bar occupies a generous space overlooking the Royal Harbour with ample outside seating and a stylish and unique architect designed interior, courtesy of ID Design, Faversham. During the summer months the hand-crafted bi-fold doors allow the bar, and its patrons, to bask in the glorious East Kent sunshine whilst enjoying panoramic views across the harbour. Once inside, you notice that every square inch of the design has been meticulously researched and considered for maximum impact. Spot-lights above the far end of the bar project vibrant colours onto the imposing chandeliers which hang elegantly above the solid dark Amtico dance floor.

The Swarovski crushed crystal wallpaper glimmers under the ambient lighting and acts as a stunning backdrop to the bespoke furniture, upholstered by Victoria Gayle Interiors of Broadstairs, a renowned local soft furnishings manufacturer whose work has featured nationally in the likes of Elle Decoration magazine and who regularly work with top London Interior designers. As you would expect, the sound system is state of the art, the DJ booth employing the Pioneer CDJ Nexus 2000’s to power high-end speakers, filling the bar with crystal clear grooves and beats during their regular weekend club nights. Behind the spectacular bespoke starburst granite bar, hand-crafted by local specialists Kinetic Advance lay an equally spectacular assortment of highend champagnes and spirts. In particular their collection of Vodka caught my eye; Belvedere, Grey Goose, Crystal Head, Ciroc and Royal Dragon (infused with 23 carat gold flakes from Switzerland no less!) are plentiful in supply. In fact, as we speak, Clique’s very own vodka is currently being developed and will be available soon! Clique also stock the exclusive Playboy Energy Drink, and were in fact the first outlet in the UK licensed to sell them. Even the mixers at Clique are by invitation only! Quality, however, comes at a price, and you won’t find any “2 for 1” offers here

[food & drink ]

– these beauties are only available by the bottle; so while you might have to shell out a little more, your experience at Clique will be a little more VIP than the average seafront establishment. Talking of VIP, Clique is the only bar in town with a VIP enclosure. The enclosure offers hostess service, privacy screen, 52 inch LED plasma and bespoke furniture including champagne tables; has seating for up to ten patrons, and packages ranging from £300 - £1500 depending on your requirements. Champagnes to suit all price-ranges; from Moet & Chandon,Veuve Cliquot, and Laurent Perrier up to Dom Perignon, Louis Roederer Cristal, and Armand de Brignac, alongside 70cl bottles of selected spirits and mixers. Sprits are not limited to 70cl however,

with 1.75 litre, 3 litre, and even 6 litre bottles available on request. As you might expect from an upscale establishment, you have to dress to impress, and that means no hoodies, tracksuits and trainers; although the clientele Clique will naturally attract are unlikely to go out for the evening looking like they’ve come straight from the gym!

The Cliffe Pub KITCHEN

BY PETE NICHOLS

An invite for a Thursday evening’s hospitality at The White Cliffs Hotel in St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe near Dover seemed like the perfect way for my wife and I to start our long weekend, so on a cold but sunny February afternoon we made our way around the coast and up through the winding village to check out the new set-up at one of East Kent Lifestyle’s favourite local getaways. The first thing that I noticed upon entry was that since my last visit to the White Cliffs there had been a few subtle changes to the layout of the communal areas; namely to the bar, lounge, and restaurant. The bar had been relocated from the entrance hall and turned ninety degrees left to face patrons sitting in the lounge or bar area, rather than facing the entrance. This move makes immediate sense, as not only does it free up more room for arriving guests or those coming and going from their rooms through to the bar/restaurant area, but it also allows for a more communal bar experience, turning the lounge from a mere “seating area” into more of a “village pub”, with

more interaction between bar staff and customers. It also makes sitting at the bar a viable option!

The other noticeable difference is that the restaurant area, just behind the bar area, has also been opened up, and as such feels more like an extension of the bar, than a stand-alone restaurant. Hence what was formerly “The Bay Restaurant”, and a typical hotel bar has been rebranded as “The Cliffe Pub & Kitchen”. As the new title suggests, the idea is a very much less formal, more inclusive offering, and it is certainly what my wife and I found as we spent an

evening in the company of a handful of regulars and the charming waiting and bar staff. When it comes to the food, however, don’t expect a menu full of your standard “pub grub”.This is still, after all, an establishment owned and run by the Oakley family - foodies to a man. Master Chef Chris Oakley still helms the award winning kitchen at nearby Wallett’s Court, and both he and his son Gavin (himself trained by the Roux brothers) would never put their name to anything less than first rate gastronomy. However, the less ‘formal’ nature of the pub and kitchen reveals itself in the form

[food & drink ] From the “spring menu” starters we chose the Smoked Trout Pate with horseradish crème fraiche,Yorkshire puddings (me) and the Kentish Blue Salad with chicory, roasted pears & walnuts (my wife); followed by Pork Belly with puy lentils, root vegetables, & cauliflower puree, and Crab Gratin with a parmesan crust and a herb salad.

of a seasonal chalkboard menu for ‘The Cliffe Kitchen’ situated at the end of the bar rather than an ‘a la carte’, on table affair. With a handful of starters, mains, and desserts, as well as the “catch of the day” the board may offer slightly fewer choices than you might find at standalone restaurant, but what is on offer is a good selection of locally sourced, well cooked, and beautifully presented dishes.

Before retiring to our room with our desserts (Blood Orange Meringue Pie with whiskey ice-cream and Custard Pannacotta with rhubarb and ginger biscuits), we decided to have a few drinks in the cosy bar, where we were ably entertained by the staff and chatted merrily to a couple of locals just in for a couple of locally brewed pints after work. We learned that there is often live music at the weekends, and with the newly open plan look to the pub/kitchen/lobby area, there is plenty of space for revellers to dance the night away.

see why The White Cliffs is growing year on year as a wedding venue. After a comfortable night’s sleep in our well-appointed and sizeable room inside the main weather-boarded inn (in total there are 16 bedrooms all with individual names and character to reflect the coastal, clifftop location, with 9 in the adjacent mews houses), we took a leisurely, late breakfast (actually considerable out of the advertised breakfast hours – but this seemed no trouble for the eager staff who were happy to accommodate their slack clientele). We returned home happily fed, watered, and rested – just in time to relax into the weekend. Bliss!

The revamped space will also be a positive for those looking book parties and events at the White Cliffs. Add into the mix the sizeable beach-styled walled garden, easily big enough to accommodate a marquee, you can also

THE

ALBION Taverna BY KAREN GORDON

It wasn't hard to persuade my friend and neighbour, Sam, who works from home every day, that a girly lunch in Faversham was just what we needed, so off we set on our half hour drive from our home town of Ramsgate, to The Albion Taverna, a quaint looking pub restaurant specialising in Mexican and British cuisine, or as their website describes it, a “Mexican Restaurant in a candle-lit boathouse with beams and willow tree views”. Don’t mind if we do!

Just a couple of minutes from the bustling streets of Faversham main hub, lies this tranquil sanctuary. The quiet, peaceful, waterfront setting that greeted us, was alluring, welcoming and relaxing in its daylight splendour; one can hardly believe that you’re barely a mile away from the busy M2 motorway. The view from the outdoor seating area over the Faversham Creek is both charming and calming, but eager for a taste of “Mexicana” we couldn't wait to sample the promised culinary delights so decamped inside the unadorned boathouse building. Our handsome, charismatic waiter, Jack, welcomed us warmly and quickly made us feel at ease as he ushered us to our seats. I hesitate to label Jack with the title 'waiter' as he disappeared behind the bar to serve drinks. He really was a 'Jack of all trades' and mastered them all as we were to discover. This time out there was no need for the boathouse to be “candle-lit” as the 1 o'clock sunshine lit up our table by the window as we took in our surroundings and the light and airy décor. Quite often when you visit a Mexican or Mexican themed restaurant in the 64

UK the nods to our South American cousins are not exactly understated; brash primary coloured facades, sombreros on the walls, and other assorted “Tex Mex” memorabilia. Décor at The Albion Taverna is a little more subtle. Carved, Mexican style wooden chairs and tables and lilting Mexican music set the scene, with the dahlias (the national flower of Mexico) embellishing the ceiling a classy touch. The large, naturally lit restaurant was uncluttered, relaxed, and highly convivial, The menu was an unpretentious single pager with the expected Mexican fare; quesadillas, enchiladas and fajitas, alongside some British favourites including the ‘Ploughman’s Platter’, British Scampi’, and the ‘Rustic Baguette’ as well as the amusingly tempting ‘Massive Egg & Chips with Hand Carved Ham’. The Albion also has chalkboards dotted around the wall depicting the ‘house specialities’ Jack appeared on cue with our glasses of white wine, in time to advise us on our choices. Sam had mentioned her desire for fajitas once or twice already and it was a definite when Jack informed us

that the customers are 'on fire for our fajitas’. I went for the house speciality 'dressed crab', again a deal clinched by our ever-friendly server in his inimitable metaphoric style: “The seafood is our speciality and flies off the shelves”. Just as Sam and I had decided to sip our wine outside to take in the view, our order promptly arrived, the first of which was the crab, and I have to say it tasted even better than it looked (which was also an aesthetic delight). The dish was sauteed with tiger prawns, lemon, chili and dijon mustard, topped off with breadcrumbs and cheese, accompanied

[food & drink ]

by a crisp cos salad and tasty, chunky chips. Full of flavour and not too rich we greedily share my main with the proviso that I assist Sam in demolishing her fajitas which arrived at the table with a sizzling entrance, declaring itself the main event! Of course, not without a role call of supporting characters including caramelised onions, guacamole, sour cream, chipotle salsa, crumbed cheese, shredded lettuce, refried beans and not forgetting the warm, rolling tortillas! We did as the menu instructed and selected our fillings and ate! I am a huge fan of fajitas and these did not disappoint. Another glass of crisp, white wine washed it down pleasurably, brought again by the attentive Jack who stopped to chat as he noticed we were just finishing up.

He informed us the Albion's tenant for the last 10 years, Gareth, was having a much needed day off that day, as well as telling us about his own 8 year customer service experience. At our request he went to find Scott, the head chef (for last 8 years at the Albion) so we could pass on our complements. Sadly he couldn't escape the kitchen as he was in the middle of training his sous chef and as we were on a time limit of getting back to the mundanities of work and picking up the kids from school, we let Jack pass them on for us. Nor did we want to interrupt the creativity of a temperamental chef!

be pleased to hear, deemed the food excellent, off we went with one quick glance over our shoulders at the breathtaking view. This was wasn't goodbye though, only until the next time as I, for one will certainly be revisiting the Albion Taverna to sample some more of its culinary delights!

Sated by food and wine, and after exchanging positive comments with a couple of businessmen, who, you’ll

Vodka MINT Panna Cotta

BY LEE BEHAN

LEE BEHAN Lee's love affair with food started at an early age, joining his Chef father in professional kitchens every spare weekend or holiday available. At the tender age of 13 he cooked dessert for a list of dignitaries which included HRH Princess Anne; opting for a seasonal Summer Pudding with clotted cream. As he notes himself "it involved no real cooking". Lee has had the opportunity to cook with many of the UK's leading chef's including Mark Hix, Anna Hansen MBE and Gizzie Erksine; celebrities such as actress and designer Sadie Frost, singer Boy George and Hollywood actor Stanley Tucci have all enjoyed Lee's food via varied & epic fundraising dinners.

I’ve been making Panna Cotta for as long as I can remember and they’ve always reminded me of Mr Whippy ice cream but without being frozen. It was James Martin who I believe first added Vodka to these creamy pots of goodness and we think it works brilliantly. We love to use Bison Grass vodka as it gives a real depth to these Italian set creams. Anyone can make these, but follow the recipe to the letter as you want a perfect wobble as opposed to a hard lump of cream. If you don’t fancy the vodka then Anna Hansen of the famous Modern Pantry adds cold green tea, which is also brilliant - enjoy! SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS:

Renée's Health Food Tips

WHERE DO WE GET OUR

PROTEIN FROM?

BY RENÉE MAGUIRE

Most people think they need to get protein from meat, depending on the person's digestive tract, state of health, medications taken, what it is eaten with it, emotions and other factors. On the other hand, plant based protein offers slower releasing protein within hours of consuming, which sustains our energy levels for longer. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and romaine lettuce, for example, are rich in ready to use, easily absorbed amino acids. When you fuel yourself on foods that are easier to digest, your body can direct more energy into healing the wear-and-tear on your muscles. Not only will you heal quicker on a diet of plant food proteins, you will also have more energy for the next day and over the course of a few weeks will notice a change in your energy levels, sleep patterns and overall health. Key plant based protein foods are: HEMP SEEDS - contain protein, but also contain heart healthy fats mainly omega-3 fatty acids. They have a delicious subtly sweet and nutty flavour and are so small in size, they can easily be used and added to any recipe to boost the protein content. Use in salads, soups, porridge, cereals, smoothies and making dips etc.

It is 70% protein in dry weight. High in Vitamin B1, B2, B3, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium and manganese and all our essential amino acids. A teaspoon a day is a great way gain a slow releasing protein in your diet, through smoothies.

YOGI, BARE ‘You may well cry in class; lots of people do,’ says Wendy, who will be my yoga teacher for the next 6 days here on the Mexican Riviera.

‘No I bloody well won’t’ I think, ‘I’m English’ - while Wendy is the dictionary definition of a Californian goddess, all flowing golden locks, sunkissed skin and positive energy. Within two days it has happened - my travel companion on this residential yoga holiday confesses to exercising her tear ducts as well as her abs: ‘I cried in class today’, she whispers conspiratorially to me over breakfast after the morning session, and I’m not sure what to say. Shortly before our journey to the Yucatan Peninsula for the ultimate girls getaway together,

she had lost her beloved grandad, making the catharsis of an introspective yoga class understandable; I will have less trouble remaining stoic this week, I reason. Also its her first retreat, while its been a year since I first found myself converted to the concept of travelling to battle the bulge rather than simply indulge - which is what most travellers to the Mayan Riviera come here do. At the time of booking my yoga retreat with The Travel Yogi, choosing their package to the most well-known part of the Yucatan Peninsula, I’d actually begun to physically ache for some ‘me time’ in the way your left foot aches for a massage while your right foot is being rubbed. I already know as I compare options that on a good yoga retreat I’ll get not just physical exercise,

74

healthy eating and holiday-style excursions, but also some mindful introspection and the opportunity to meet new people as well as spend quality time with a friend. And it’s all organised by someone else, so all I have to do is turn up. Bliss. I find myself drawn to this particular retreat as strongly as I’m pulled off the sofa and towards the kettle whenever the adverts come on TV; so very strongly indeed. It’s got everything I want from a trip including proximity to some of that all important indulgence, meaning we can bookend our

In no time I consider asking my new friend Camille to change her real surname by deed poll to curried chicken, it has such a good ring to it.

and out of pretzel shapes we didn’t know we could make a week ago, anymore than we knew what our food name was.

In even less time we have all found our groove in the twice daily classes which I’m surprised to find are almost hard to fit in around all the excursions and time spent exploring the local town and hanging out in the communal kitchen comparing stories like university freshmen.

Then we’re asked to lie back and do a visualisation exercise. It’s something which should be easy to call to mind: yourself looking in a mirror. In your mind’s eye you are told to talk to your reflection, you’re given messages to pass on to yourself about how worthy, how special and how loved you are.

Finally the day comes when we regress once more to school kid behaviour, and ask teacher if we can have class outside - which here in Mexico means on the beach.

virtuous vinyasas with some more traditional Mexican fun of taco eating and swimming with turtles - yoga is all about balance is it not? The first supper after arrival, when you get to meet the fellow yogis with whom you’ll be sharing yoga mats and hopefully margaritas, turns out to be a shy affair. Despite being on ‘retreat’ which sounds like something a specific cross-section of society might do, it turns out we are from all walks of life, and are just normal people who are willing to give this a go and have different reasons for doing so. Meaning most of us aren’t over-sharers — so we actually play a name game to break the ice. Like nursery school kids, we each choose a food that alliterates with our name to help the others remember who is who.

A seaside yoga class sounds like a great idea, until you try it for real. There’s still some wind lingering after a tropical storm which has brought changeable weather for the last few days, and the sand coats our mats, is whipped into our hair, finds its way in wet clumps under our fingernails and crunches beneath our toes as we splay them in this pose or that. But gradually, moving in unison like a single unit, our limbs begin to follow the orders of Wendy’s gentle calls to action as they carry on the wind to our now-trained ears. We try new ambitious and eye-popping poses, like headstands, on the fresh sand, shrugging off our fears and self-consciousness in front of passing walkers and beach volleyball players. A dog runs into the multi-coloured human circle we’ve created, sniffing at us enthusiastically and the group erupts with laughter; we try trust exercises, pushing and pulling one another into

I feel uneasy and my face feels suddenly wet and I remain in the child’s pose just that little bit longer than everyone else as the exercise ends. But when I pull myself onto my feet I’m relaxed and manage to take a group photo before we lose the last lingering light of dusk. Perhaps some sand got in my eye, maybe the wind irritated my retinas, being British I feel sure this is what happened. We are given custom blended aromatherapy oils as parting gifts just before we bid farewell to our new friends - and as scent is the closest scent to memory this feels an insightful gift. I still use my spray bottle as an ongoing opportunity to evoke that ‘me time’, that vulnerability, and just for a moment while waiting for the kettle to boil I can retreat back to being a relaxed kid again. ROMAN

SHOPPING HOLIDAY Italy is of course famous for food, but its cities are also celebrated for iconic fashion, classic style and luxurious shopping.

Jaillan Yehia meets the best artisans in the Eternal City - and visits the boutiques which feature on the latest official list of the best shops in Rome. If I asked you to play a word association game with European countries, 'Swiss' would be followed by 'precision'. 'German' by 'engineering' so what about Italian? It's synonymous with style, surely. And there are some lovely stories behind the newly released official list of the top 28 artisan boutiques offering the most stylish items in the city of Rome. In 2003 Patrizia Fabri took over the oldest millinery business in Rome - and probably the whole of Italy from the longstanding family owners having been one of their best customers. Antica Manifattura Cappelli was destined to become a museum but Patrizia tracked down the milliner and reopened the business which continues to operate as an atmospheric shop. On my visit I was like a kid in a sweet shop - well who wouldn't want to try on every hat in sight? 76

But the sweetest surprise came with the prices, as I was shocked to discover the affordability of these beautiful hand crafted hats.

tradition here - each shop has a well established history, some dating back multiple generations and over 100 years.

Affordability isn't what is primarily on offer at all 28 of the locations listed in the official ERE guide to the best shops in Rome (it stands for Eccellenze Romane Export) - some of the craftsmen on the hand-selected list are uniquely skilled in work so specialised that if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.

Like the totally charming (and utterly Italian) shirtmaker DAN, whose shop walls are adorned with pictures of famous faces (like Russell Crow) wearing their lovingly made shirts.

Like sculptor Dante Mortet who is favoured by the Hollywood A-list for his unique work making bronze casts of their hands - and of footballers feet, and has worked with everyone from John Terry to Robert de Niro. Others, particularly the many talented jewellers featured, hand make everything from entry level items to bespoke precious pieces and have something for every taste and budget. In fact part of the criteria for selection into the scheme is location; this list prioritises businesses close to Rome's most important tourist attractions. But there’s an emphasis on high quality and

No more than 10 shirts are hand crafted here per day - and of the several staff one has been an employee for 40 years, another for 15 years. And when you meet the family at DAN you can understand why. Plus it's clear that the starting price of â‚Ź190 buys you more than just a bespoke wardrobe item; you also get their undivided attention and exceptional customer service.

[travel ]

In fact each of these businesses underlines the contrast between the beauty of a hand crafted product and the mass market factory-produced products that we've all come to accept as part of our daily lives. Though perhaps not everyone can stretch to a pair of â‚Ź2000 shoes for the daily commute like those at Bocache & Salvucci. These 100% hand crafted men's shoes are favoured by the Saudi Royal family - each pair takes between 20 days to 30 days and 14 solid

hours of man work to make - there are only around 6 places who still make shoes to this level and the craft takes 2 years of training to perfect. But any footwear lovers passing the area are welcome to pop inside and feast their eyes on the colourful store itself. It's much the same story of intense study and insane attention to detail at all of the shops who have won a place on this ultimate Rome shopping guide.

'Sometimes we are accustomed to seeing these things which are part and parcel of our heritage and we take them for granted' one of the artisans comments and I realise that just as Brits take a sense of humour for granted in life, Italians just expect good craftsmanship and beauty at every turn and simply can't be fobbed off with less. BLACK

BY DEBORAH TURNER, YOU IMAGE CONSULTANCY

Kent based Image Consultant Deborah Turner trained at London’s leading image consultancy, Aston & Hayes and has a decade of experience and success in the industry and is a member of The Federation of Image Consultants. Spring 2016 Fashion sees the onset of some vivid brights and some softer shades including buttercup and Peach Echo. Retailers are dressing their shop windows with colourful displays in an attempt to convince us the weather is improving and we can ditch the winter wardrobe. However, it seems despite the beautiful range of colours we are tempted with each season, we all still seem to revert to the apparent safety of black. What makes us think that black really is the best option? First and foremost, is the belief that black is slimming and of course it can be.Whilst there is no denying black can be slimming if in the right shape and the right fabric for you. However any dark colour is equally slimming, it really doesn’t have to be just black. Dark colours absorb the light and so like black, do not draw attention to problem areas.Wearing black close up to your face can make you look fuller in the face if it is too harsh for your natural complexion. This is due the shadow that black can give you under the chin, giving the appearance of a double chin, if it overpowers your complexion.

so you look less radiant. It can make your complexion look uneven, which is ageing on your skin. It can cast shadows which will not be flattering. It can make your skin tone look dull and tired. We tend to not take too much notice what effect a colour has on our face when trying clothes on before buying and so you may not have noticed previously the effect wearing black can have on your complexion.Wearing the best colours to suit your skin tone can make your skin look fresh, radiant and younger. Everything comes in black! Frustratingly this is indeed true. There is more choice of black items but that is because there is more demand for black. If we bought less black and purchased more colours, more coloured garments would be produced and less black, it is that never ending circle. However, there is still plenty of colour available, but it may take a little more effort to find, but when you do… wow! How amazing does it look? How many compliments do you get? For a little more effort, you get huge returns.

Everyone looks good in black, don’t they?

It is easy to wear black

Black can in fact be extremely ageing. It can drain the colour from your face

If your wardrobe is predominantly

black of course it is easy. Is ‘easy’ always good though? It is predictable and can be regarded as safe. Making a great first impression involves thought and preparation. Go for the wow factor, not easy. You never know who you may meet! If black does currently monopolise your wardrobe add a pop of colour with some accessories. Even if black suits your skin tone, wearing colour can be so much more empowering. Colour makes you look and feel good. It can reflect your mood and personality.Wearing colour will get you noticed, make you memorable and you will certainly receive more compliments. In a sea of black you will stand out in a room if you opt for a colour that makes you look the best version of you. Be confident with colour, be yourself, be the best you!

home facial HOW TO CHOOSE A

ROUTINE TO SUIT YOUR LIFESTYLE & FINANCES The most important thing about a beauty treatment is that it not only makes you look good but that it makes you feel good too. In conjunction with the occasional visit to the salon, where you can take advantage of their specialist advice and facial treatments using serums and specialised masks, this can be achieved at home. These days we live our lives in the fast lane and our skin can reflect this life style and like everything can always benefit from a helping hand. Nearly everyone’s concern eventually, is ageing. The first step towards slowing the ageing process down is to keep your skin rehydrated, exfoliated and balanced because without the skin being in good condition in the first place no anti-ageing creams are going to work their best. Taking a little time to research your skin concerns and working within your lifestyle and your finances you will be able to establish a realistic and very beneficial facial routine at home. How often do you find yourself doing your weekly food shop in a hurry and just grabbing the nicest looking bottle of facial products on the shelf without considering whether or not it is right for your skin type and condition? They are usually cheaper than the Brand products in the local salon but do they work? Do they suit your skin? Do you like them and in honesty how many of these part used bottles are in your bathroom cabinet as you discover that they are not really for you?

Pop into your local beauty salon for advice and help in choosing a product to suit your skin. They have sample products for you to take home and try so that when you do come to make your purchase you can be confident that you a buying exactly what feels right for you and will give you the benefits that you are seeking. The other bonus, of course, is that you will not end up with a bathroom cabinet full of half used bottles of inappropriate products! Like everything in life, you get what you pay for and most salon products work out the same as supermarket brands if used correctly. Again, advice on how to maximise the use of the product can be given from the skin specialists within the salon.

Preparation is everything Cleanse and tone: find a good face wash/cleanser/toner. It’s no use purchasing a separate cleanser and toner when realistically you don't have the time to use both. There is an extensive range of products these days that you can use to get a good cleanse and tone in one application like Clarins Water Comfort cleanser or Elemis Pro Radiance Cleanser.

Exfoliate: if you are not exfoliating your skin on a regular basis, your skin cannot absorb your moisturiser properly and so will not give you the full benefit it has to offer. This is due to your pores being clogged by dead skin cells. Clogged pores can make your skin look dry and dehydrated. Be aware that if your skin is oily, exfoliating too often will cause more oil production. In this case the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel is recommended as it is an exfoliator that will make your complexion appear smoother and brighter by dissolving dead skin cells without rubbing so it is particularly well suited to mature, delicate or oily skin. So in conclusion a visit to a beauty salon can make you feel good by giving you good advice on how to care for your skin and giving you the correct treatments and products to ensure that you look and feel your best.

FELLA'S GUIDE TO

MAINTAINING STUBBLE BY BOBBY GORDON OF FELLA, CANTERBURY

Gone are the days when clean shaven was the only way to look well groomed. Stubble is no longer seen as scruffy and plenty of stylish guys are now sporting some kind of face fur. Ask yourself if stubble is for you, and whether you are prepared to maintain the look. It also helps if you can grow some! To get the best results you should follow Fella's 4 step guide. 1.EXFOLIATE

3.SHAPING

Wash your face with a high quality face wash or scrub to remove dead skin cells. Exfoliating and washing your face prior to shaving will also help prevent rashes and irritations of any sort.

Using an electric trimmer will enable you to create a clean line at the edge of the stubble. Try not to sculpt your beard with too much precision though and remember, ‘chinstraps aren't cool!’ Fella recommends Wahl’s Lithium Ion Grooming Station.

Fella recommends Bulldog original face scrub.

4 MAINTAINING LENGTH

2. SHAVING GEL

Apply to areas that you’ll be shaving this tends to be cheeks & lower neck. We would recommend gel as foams, although often cheap and convenient tend to dry the skin more and are not so great if you already have dry or sensitive skin. Gels usually offer more lubrication, and transparent ones are useful if you have facial hair and need to see where you’re going with the razor. Fella recommends American Crew shave gel.

Find a length your happy with & using a trimmer with different length guards you will be able to keep your stubble in check so it always appears well groomed & never to scruffy. Fella recommends Wahl’s Lithium Ion (Rechargeable) Stubble Trimmer, which comes with 2 x variable attachment combs (a stubble comb and beard comb).

Fella is the destination for sharp haircuts. Founded in 2009 by Bobby Gordon, a 15 year veteran of some of Soho’s hottest hair joints. Fella is located in the heart of Canterbury, and brings a unique boutique feel to the barber shop experience like no other in the area. With no appointment necessary & late night openings you can kick back & listen to some cool beats whilst one of the expert stylists take care of you. Fella has a highly trained & skilled team who pride themselves on grooming for the modern man 90

ICE

CLININC BY JAILLAN YEHIA

BECKENHAM

On arrival at the Ice Clinic on Beckenham’s historic and charming high street I’m offered a cup of tea which precedes to come not in the mug or plastic cup you might expect but in beautiful bone china pink and gold teacup that reflects the super girlie environment in to which I’ve just stepped.

I'm here for another girlie treat - an Exilis facial treatment which I'm told will make my skin look and feel lifted, fresher and more youthful, while making me feel relaxed, so I’m looking forward to seeing the results.

I could certainly do with some pampering - after a month of constant travel I'm looking rather tired, and in fact I'm perpetually in search of something that will magically wipe away the spent hours on planes, soften the dark circles left behind by jetlag, and replace the disturbed sleep that comes with time differences. As soon as I meet Julie, the salon’s knowledgeable owner I feel I'm in very capable hands and I'm relieved that she has a matter-of-fact attitude to the many different skincare options - from machines to creams - which she offers. Hard sells and a one-size-suits-all approach are both no-no's in Julie's salon,

now in its 5th year - and she prides herself on giving every client a totally bespoke solution. 'Sometimes people ask my clients what they are having done that day and they'll admit they don't know,’ she tells me, explaining that’s because some of her customers are so loyal that they simply trust her to do whatever needs to be done to their face at any given time to answer a changing range of concerns from dryness to ageing rosacea to excess hair. Julie also admits to spending her spare time researching the latest developments in aesthetics and confesses she's a geek for her subject - 'you've got to have passion for what you do'. This passion comes through as she tells me the results I can expect from today’s Exilis treatment - and in her typically honest way covers the limitations too, which are that one treatment won’t last long: a course of 4 of these facials using radio frequency waves means the increase in collagen will become long term.

At the end of an hour of quality time with the Exilis machine - and with Julie - I can definitely see my face looks glowing and fresh and my skin looks plumped - I can see why this is popular with ladies who have a special occasion to attend and don’t want to try anything invasive. Julie explains that in central London the prices for this advanced facial can be up to double what she charges here in Kent, and that she likes to give clients value by using the machine for the duration of the appointment rather than padding the time out applying masks or lotions which won’t give the kind of results an additional 20 minutes of radio frequencies will in terms of burning fat and tightening the skin; and now I’ve seen what it can do I want to spend every minute I can with it too.

A heated roller is passed over my face in circular motions to stimulate this process - I feel a warm and soothing sensation not unlike a hot stone massage. At a couple of moments the heat gets a little intense for a second but quickly passes and even though this is a results-driven treatment it feels quite pampering too. 91

WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

ENDOMETRIOSIS BY KAYE SEDGWICK-JONES

I’m Kaye, I live in Rainham, and I’m a freelance illustrator and graphic designer. I’m passionate about raising awareness of endometriosis and women’s health.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis 9 years ago, after a 15 year struggle suffering in silence and being told that everything was ‘normal’. But what is endometriosis? It’s a condition where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found outside the womb. The NHS describes it as a long term chronic condition, and typically symptoms will include: •

Painful periods or heavy periods

Pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis or lower back

Pain during and after sex

Bleeding between periods

Difficulty getting pregnant.

It affects an estimated 2 million women, and when you think that diabetes affects

26 million people, it’s staggering that just 20% of the population know what endometriosis is.That’s because no-one talks about it. Even more shocking is that it takes an average of 11 years – I know, 11 years! to get a diagnosis from the onset of symptoms...and that’s typically 8 years from the first GP visit.Women see an average of 5 doctors before getting a correct diagnosis, and for two thirds (68%) they’ve already been diagnosed with another condition first, including IBS and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Four percent were diagnosed with depression.

My own story is awful, the years of debilitating pain, emotional stress and the experiences I have lost out on because I wasn’t listened to, and therefore didn’t get the help that I needed. But I now realise that my experiences are not uncommon and that there are millions more women out there suffering. Some in silence, although awareness of endometriosis is slowly increasing so I’m hoping more are being encouraged to speak out. I’ve been working with Endometriosis UK (www.endometriosis-uk.org) to help them with their campaigns, and using my skills as an illustrator and graphic designer I have worked on several designs to help get people talking about endometriosis. I’ve also written an e-book ‘Living with Endometriosis’ which is available to download from my website www. ohhhkaye.co.uk which I have put

illustration and graphic design business, designing and creating materials for a variety of businesses large and small in a large range of fields. You can see some examples of my work on www.ohhhkaye.co.uk. I have recently got married to my wonderful husband Ben, and we are looking at a bright and happy future together. So it can, and will be ok, you can live a healthy and successful life living with endometriosis. The piece of advice that I have to give to anyone that has read this article and thinks that it sounds like something they might be suffering from?

together with fellow endometriosis sufferers as well as several health and wellness practitioners. In it, there is really useful advice about how to live with endometriosis, in terms of mental health wellbeing, the best exercises to do to help with the pain and what’s best to eat drink and keep yourself in the best shape possible.

I’ve written it to help others have as normal a life as possible, to lessen their pains and other symptoms. I’ve benefitted enormously from the advice, so I want to support others in their journey too. When it comes to my life with endometriosis, I have learnt to be strong and not let it define me. I own my own

Please go and see someone, and don’t be put off if you aren’t happy with the advice or treatment they recommend if it isn’t working. If you think that what you are experiencing isn’t normal, chances are, you are probably right.

If I can help just one other person get diagnosed, then it has all been worth it.

ST LAWRENCE COLLEGE

SCHOOL GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH St Lawrence College is thriving, by any measure. For a start it has been a record breaking year, because the School is now bigger than it has ever been in its history. After growth of around 1/3 over the last few years, pupil numbers now stand at 415 in the Senior School, plus a further 200 in the Junior School, which is also seeing growing popularity. In the Senior School we are at the limit of capacity and the management of waiting lists has now become a feature of the Registrar’s job! We are continuing to push academic standards ever higher, with the current Upper Sixth, for example, holding very

good offers of places at elite universities, including Oxbridge. Co-curricular life is thriving, with a senior choir now numbering seventy, House and School plays that grow in ambition and quality every year, and sporting achievements that are the envy of other schools; we won virtually every cricket and netball match last year, and we are regularly winning Kent competitions in hockey. Investment continues, with the water-based astro turf hockey pitch now complete. The total cost of around £1.5M includes a range of improvements to the school playing fields. We plan to start work on a new

Science School on the main campus site later this year which will also house new Art and Design Technology departments and include a gallery.

At the heart of all our focus, though, remains the happiness and success of every individual pupil at St Lawrence. I think the final word, therefore, goes to a new Year 7 pupil in the School who sent me a Christmas card which contained the best measure of our success: “I’m glad I came to this school. Thank you.”
