Seeing Round Corners comes to Turner Contemporary In summer 2016, Turner Contemporary presents the first UK exhibition to explore how artists have responded to the phenomenon of the circle, the disc or the sphere. This exhibition explores the ways in which artists have used this universal and recurring form, and the very idea of ‘roundness’. Seeing Round Corners showcases more than 50 works, presenting a variety of processes and media including painting, sculpture, film and photography, alongside design objects and historical artefacts. Whether in the form of a disc, a sphere, a void or an arc, the circle is central to our experience of the natural world and to artists’ depictions of nature. The exhibition includes works by JMW Turner, whose swirling, circular vortex of paint evoked the power of natural forces in his late seascapes and history paintings. The majority of works in the exhibition are from the 20th century onwards, exploring the circle through the prism of modern and contemporary artistic practice, with works by Barry Flanagan, Anish Kapoor, Barbara Hepworth, Paul Nash, David Batchelor, Richard Long and Ben Nicholson, amongst others. Drawing on a wealth of concepts and subjects from the atomic and the cosmic, geometry and optics, to time, rotation and visual perception, Seeing Round Corners will also include a selection of objects and images from world cultures, religions and history such as scientific instruments, technological images and works from spiritual and mystical traditions. Seeing Round Corners is curated by artists David Ward and Jonathan Parsons with Turner Contemporary.

‘NASA rocket’ touches down in East Kent The latest attraction at the Rippledown outdoor education centre near St Margaret’s Bay is simply ‘out of this world’ – it’s a scale model of a NASA Atlas booster rocket! It was donated to Rippledown after the Britain at War Experience closed due to the redevelopment of London Bridge railway station. Rippledown’s Head of Centre, Richard Martin, told EK Lifestyle that rockets are a great way to spark children’s imaginations so the Atlas rocket is a wonderful source of inspiration for the thousands of children who visit Rippledown. “From V2 rockets flying over the White Cliffs of Dover during WW2 to the later secret Cold War heritage across South Foreland, our new rocket is right at home here. “From an environmental perspective, NASA’s Atlas rocket has been fundamental to our understanding of the planet. The deployment of satellites enables us to monitor climate change and continues to shape our view of Earth. “James Bond creator Ian Fleming set his Moonraker novel in and around his home in St Margaret’s Bay, just a few miles from Rippledown. And with rockets and spaceports included in the recent Queen's speech, we’re hoping the government may consider Rippledown as a location and then Fleming’s dream of a spaceport will become a reality. Who knows, Rippledown could help to inspire a future rocket scientist!” says Richard. Since opening in 1977, over 40,000 primary school children have attended environmental education programmes at Rippledown. It’s operated by environmental education charity The Bay Trust. RAMSGATEto PEGWELL BAY EAST KENT WALK
THIS WALK COMBINES MODERN SEASIDE TOWN LIFE WITH A PEACEFUL NATURE RESERVE. RAMSGATE, HOME TO THE UK’S ONLY ROYAL HARBOUR COMBINES AN ARCHITECTURAL DELIGHT WITH A TRADITIONAL SEASIDE ESCAPE WITH PEGWELL BAY COUNTRY PARK FREQUENTED BY SOME OF THE UK’S RAREST BIRDS AND WILDLIFE HABITATS. THIS WALK IS A TOWN AND COUNTRY TREAT, PERFECT FOR COMBINING BOTH THIS PROMISES TO BE A DAY THAT DOES NOT DISAPPOINT.
Beginning your walk The very heart of Ramsgate awaits as you begin this walk outside the Royal pub. Set off past the pub, cross the road at York Street and keep walking until you reach Leopold Street (beyond the Travelodge hotel). Now look for a black signpost directing you to Westcliff Arcade, nestled below the Royal Templar Yacht Club on the other side of the road. Take the steps up to the arcade entrance and then make your way through this popular restaurant and café lined street. Exit the arcade down some more steps and make your way along Sion Hill. Continue until you have passed the Foy Boat public house, walked through a small park and crossed the road to join the Promenade. There are plenty of interpretation panels and benches dotted around here if you fancy a little break, and some wonderful views of the harbour and yacht marina to enjoy. Take your time exploring this area which you can return to later when you have finished your walk.
Townland to Parkland Further along the promenade, after the Churchill Tavern, the promenade becomes noticeably wider and more peaceful. Continue past the Lookout kiosk (public toilets are available 16
here) and the promenade widens again to reveal even more green space with a genuinely charming ‘open parkland’ feel. There’s also a sculpture by David Barnes called ‘Hands and Molecules’ that overlooks Pegwell Bay (in the direction of the old Pfizer complex at Sandwich). A little further on and you arrive at the Boating Pool Café with its unmistakable circular boating pool, café and free children’s play park. Public toilets are also available. It is worth noting that the end of the Promenade is now approximately 350m away where the path turns ninety degrees and emerges, some 200 metres further on, at Pegwell Road. Turn left here and follow the road but be aware there is a short section of road (approximately 65metres) where there is no foot-way.
Characteristic to coastal As Pegwell Road begins to curve to the right, you will pass the Belle Vue Tavern with its wonderful terrace overlooking the bay and the Sir Stanley Gray pub on your left hand side and the popular Pegwell Bay Hotel on your right. Keep on for another fifty metres and then turn left to follow a shingle track to the old Coastguard Cottages (now all private dwellings). Don’t be concerned when the path becomes bare earth and grass for several hundred metres, you will soon reach and cross the access road to the old Hoverport and emerge

PHOTOGRAPHS BY TONY RAY-JONES AND MARTIN PARR
Saturday 9th July to Sunday 25th September, The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge, Canterbury.
A major exhibition of work by British Photographer,Tony Ray-Jones (1941-1972) opens at The Beaney House of Art & Knowledge in Canterbury on Saturday 9th July. The exhibition will feature over 100 works drawn from the Tony Ray-Jones archive at the National Media Museum alongside 30 rarely seen early black and white photographs,The Non-Conformists, by Martin Parr. After growing up in Kent, Essex and London, Ray-Jones studied at the London School of printing before gaining a scholarship toYale University School of Art, working in and around NewYork before returning to the UK in late 1965. Between 1966 and 1969 Tony Ray-Jones created a body of photographic work documenting English customs and identity. Humorous yet melancholy, these photographs were a departure from anything else being produced at the time.
They quickly attracted the attention of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London where they were exhibited in 1969.Tragically, in 1972, Ray-Jones died from Leukaemia aged just 30. However, his short but prolific career had a lasting influence on the development of British photography from the 1970’s through to the present. In 1970, Martin Parr, a photography student at Manchester Polytechnic, had been introduced to Ray-Jones. Inspired by him, Parr produced The Non-Conformists, shot in black and white in Hebden Bridge and the surrounding CalderValley. This project started within two years of Ray-Jones death and demonstrates his legacy and influence. This special exhibition draws from the Tony Ray-Jones archive, held by the National Media Museum.Around 50 vintage prints will be on display alongside an equal number of photographs which have never previously been printed. Director of Canterbury Museums & Galleries, Joanna Jones said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Science Museum and National Media Museum to showcase the work of two seminal British photographers in the heart of Canterbury.” Greg Hobson, curator of Photographs at the National Media Museum says,“The combination of Martin Parr and Tony Ray-Jones’s work will allow the viewer to trace an important trajectory through the history of British photography, and present new ways of thinking about photographic histories through creative use of our collections.”
Tony Ray-Jones, Blackpool, 1967
The exhibition is a Media Space production. Media Space is a collaboration between the Science Museum (London) and the National Media Museum (Bradford). 21

ONE TO WATCH BY SHELLEY OWERS
LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPIL SHINES AT PRESTIGIOUS ART COMPETITION Six year old Linus Nye, an avid young artist from the village of Worth, has been highly commended for a piece of artwork in the prestigious Portfolio annual art competition, run by the Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate. His painting entitled “Flying Eggs” will be part of an exhibition called “Circles” at the Turner Contemporary, opening on the 27th May and will hang alongside works by Leonardo da Vinci. The Turner has estimated that 300,000 people will visit the exhibition during the two months it is open. Linus has shown an interest and a natural ability for art since pre-school, and has attended the Forge Cottage Art Club in Elmstone run by local artist, Mark Mason, for the last 6 months. Linus’s parents feel that the relaxed atmosphere at the art club, and expert tutoring from Mark Mason has helped encourage his creativity and develop his confidence. Linus attends the small local village school,Worth Primary, where his teachers ensure his love of art is encouraged and nurtured too. Portfolio is Turner Contemporary’s annual art competition for pupils, students, teachers and art education professionals. It celebrates the creative talent and success of students and teachers from across Kent and Medway, and gives students exciting opportunities to get involved in culture in their county and have the chance of exhibiting their work at key cultural centres such as Canterbury Christchurch University and Turner Contemporary. The Tuner celebrates its 5th year in 2016 and the theme of the exhibition this year was "Circles". 22
The brief for the competition asked the children to think about circles, which are part of everyday life and have been since the beginning of time. Linus said of his painting, “I thought about circles and then straight away of fried eggs. I then thought, frying pans are circles too. I threw my first painting away of the eggs as it wasn’t good enough and spent a really long time on this one.The hardest part was getting the eggs shiny and greasy. It took me about two days to do it I think.” Over 1,000 adults and children entered the competition and 120 were shortlisted. On Wednesday 20 April those shortlisted were invited with their families to Christ Church University for an award ceremony, drinks reception and exhibition. Around 500 people attended the evening, which was a remarkable display of creative talent. Linus’s painting was praised by the judges for its "creativity, imagination, technique and humour". “Flying Eggs” was Highly Commended in the Key Stage 2 category 7-11 year olds, but at 6 years old Linus is actually only in KS1. A brave walk to the stage, solo, to collect his award, interviews with Turner staff about why he loved art and some photos rounded off an exciting night for a very happy 6 year old. Quite an experience. The Portfolio exhibition will open in the Clore Learning Studio from Friday 27 May 2016 and will conclude on Sunday 24 July 2016.

FLOWER POWER
BY MARTYN BARR
Canterbury’s Whitefriars shopping centre will be awash with colour again this summer as it prepares to impress judges in the South & South East in Bloom competition – part of Britain in Bloom, the UK’s largest horticultural campaign. In 2014,Whitefriars achieved a coveted Gold Award at the first attempt and last year it played a major role in helping the city achieve top honours too.The centrepiece of its floral contribution was a water-themed show garden, which brought some welcome colour to Whitefriars Square. Over 100 hanging baskets and other floral displays were also installed, as well as colourful hanging flower balls in the Marlowe Arcade. Whitefriars asked students from Simon Langton Boys School to design a water clock, which was installed in Whitefriars Square during the summer and has proved a popular attraction ever since. It also commissioned award-winning local author Martyn Barr to develop a new young person’s guide to water, a followup to Martyn’s acclaimed history and nature books. Whitefriars Marketing Manager Julie Holness says: “It’s not about winning awards, though it’s always nice to see your efforts recognised. Rather, In Bloom is a great way to engage with 26

our shoppers and the wider community and to encourage them to linger longer in Whitefriars. Everyone loves flowers and there’s no better place to be than in beautiful Canterbury in the warm sunshine, dining al fresco or simply sitting and soaking up the cosmopolitan atmosphere.” This year,Whitefriars will be launching its In Bloom bid on 28 May, with a centrepiece garden and associated activities reflecting the Royal Horticultural Society’s 2016 theme of ‘wellbeing’. On offer during launch day will be free tea and cakes, face-painting, live jazz and plant/craft stalls. Once again, the centre will be partnering with local charity The Fifth Trust, which provides fulfilling, work-based opportunities for adults with learning difficulties. The Elham-based charity’s horticulture team and students will be designing the show garden, as well as planting and maintaining the hanging baskets and other floral displays throughout the summer using recycled rainwater.
Whitefriars will also be sponsoring a new book by Martyn Barr, along with an associated teacher’s guide. This will showcase Canterbury’s popular green
spaces as well as some of its hidden gems, and place them in their historical, ecological and environmental contexts. There will also be an opportunity for people of all ages to participate in floral-themed art and photography competitions, with winning entries displayed in the centre, and great prizes on offer. Local schools are also being asked to design four new raised flower beds, with winners seeing their designs brought to life by Fifth Trust horticulturalists. A host of fun activities will take place throughout the summer, including live music performances, children’s workshops, a Father’s Day super car event, a summer market (from 11-31 July), and more. Full details will be published on the Whitefriars website at:

THE GIFT
OF
KNOWLEDGE When East Kent-based PR and Design Consultant Martyn Barr completed his first children’s educational book in 2009 he thought it would be his last. ‘The Young Person’s History Guide to Canterbury’ has gone on to sell nearly 5,000 copies and is still a best seller in the city. Seven years on and Martyn is working on his ninth book - on Canterbury’s green spaces which nicely complements his original tome.
The Young Person’s History Guide to Canterbury was sponsored by the Whitefriars shopping centre as a means of engaging with children, parents and teachers (for whom a separate, free resource guide was also produced). It also marked the completion of ‘The Big Dig’, the largest archaeological excavation ever undertaken in the city during the shopping centre’s construction. The book deal proved so successful that the shopping centre has supported four more titles as part of its ‘In Bloom’ contributions. Martyn’s books – ‘To Be A Bee’, ‘Garden Science’ and ‘Water World’ - have all been singled out for special mention by the South & South East in Bloom judges and contributed to Whitefriars receiving its coveted Gold Award in 2014.Whitefriars’ generosity has meant that 200 schools across the district have all received free copies of these beautifully produced books. Martyn says: “Although my books are targeted at young people, they are not dumbed down in any way and I get a lot of favourable comments from adults who have read them. I try to appeal to readers on a number of levels, through an easyto-read narrative, factual ‘sound bites’ and stunning imagery.Their design is very contemporary and a million miles away from the sort of books I read at school!” 28
As well as being a ‘best-selling’ author, Martyn can now lay claim to ‘awardwinning’ too. His 2014 book on Canterbury Cathedral’s stained glass windows – ‘Paintings in Light’ - was runner-up (to the Bodleian Library!) in the children’s publication category in the Association of Cultural Enterprises’ Annual Awards. Martyn says: “What was particularly gratifying about the ACE Award was the fact that my book was competing against entries from many of the top heritage and cultural organisations across the country, including the national museums, art galleries and gardens and major heritage bodies such as the National Trust and English Heritage.” Canterbury Cathedral’s Director of Stained Glass Léonie Seliger, adds: “Martyn has the gift of seeing things with fresh eyes – and to transmit that sense of discovery and excitement to the reader.” In 2014, on the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, Martyn published ‘The Lost Generation’, a young person’s guide to the Great War.The book was sponsored by the then High Sheriff of Kent, Hugo Fenwick, and distributed to every school in the county to mark his term in office. Martyn says:
“To be able to tell the story of the war from a young person’s perspective was a real labour of love as well as a huge responsibility and I feel really privileged to have been given the opportunity.” First World War expert Dr Will Butler, from the University of Kent at Canterbury, adds: “Martyn’s book is richly illustrated, covers a significant amount of detail, and avoids those well trodden myths of the First World War, to provide a concise history on the topic.” All of Martyn’s books are available for purchase online at:
www.OOTBShop.co.uk. His new book on Canterbury’s green spaces ‘No Lovelier Place’ will be published at the end of June.

THE
GARDEN OF ENGLAND SP A WALLETT’S COURT, WESTCLIFFE BY JOANNA COSTELLO
Me time! I had been looking forward to my one on one with the infamous Mary at aptly named “Garden of England Spa” at Wallett’s court hotel near St Margaret’s Bay for weeks. Having already had the most amazing aromatherapy massage with Mary on a previous visit, this session was something I had never tried before but knew would be equally relaxing and satisfying. The Chakra Balancing Massage with Crystal wands may sound a little unusual to most but I knew it would be out of this world and I was not at all disappointed. Greeted by Mary’s welcoming smile and warm, lilting, Irish brogue, she explained what the therapy would involve. I was already feeling relaxed as I wound my
way down through the grounds to her little therapy pod nestled at the edge of acres of rolling fields. Once inside it felt like I was in another world, the trickling of the pink quartz crystal water feature, the blend of aromatic oils and the sunlight streaming through the picture window bouncing of her collection of crystals, I was already more relaxed than I had been in weeks, and the real experience had yet to begin. I knew a little about Chakra balancing being a way of healing one’s mind, body and ethereal body, cleansing all three and letting go of negative energy to be replaced with positive energy. Mary began by asking offering me a bowl of crystals and to choose those which I felt drawn to. I chose four and was asked to hold them throughout the session. I laid on the bed whilst Mary cleansed the room with a multitude beautiful smelling aromas and herbs. She then began to massage me with the crystal wands which had been warmed naturally on heated cherry pips to rid them of any electrons and to allow them to be pure and in their natural state. Heaven. Mary connects spiritually and spends a great deal of time working with the wands; in my case they were balls of healing rose crystal with surrounding crystals of amethyst for soothing and clear quartz for energizing. The wands soothingly and intuitively found their way to areas on my body that required unblocking, ridding me of negative
34
energy which in fact were areas where I had been experiencing either pain or tension prior to my visit. Any scepticism as to how much I would enjoy the feeling of this kind of massage compared to the normal hand manipulation I’m used to soon evaporated, along with my negative energies. I was immediately hooked. After what can only be described as a truly deep and relaxing massage, Mary was guided to various crystals which she laid on my Chakra points. These had been chosen specifically to heal and to rebalance. Then I heard a noise resonating around me which was so beautiful I felt my eyes well up with tears; Mary had started to use her crystal singing bowl, whose pitch mirrors that of the earth’s healing vibration. I felt so many deep and heavy thoughts lifted from my shoulders – a total release - and I felt for the first time in a long time peaceful and reenergized. The two hour session was an experience beyond my expectations, and I can still feel the result today, weeks after my treatment. Old grudges and negative feelings I had for years seem to have lifted, I have let them go. Mary Bonas loves what she does and doesn’t consider it work and you feel that love and dedication from the moment you step inside her beautiful healing pod. A beautiful massage and beautiful experience delivered by a beautiful human being.*

The
OLD KENT
MARKET
BY PETER NICHOLS
Here at East Kent Lifestyle we’ve been heralding the regeneration of Margate for years and it looks like the seeds sown are starting to bear fruit. With the Turner Contemporary, new boutique hotels, the re-landscaped promenade, the charming old town with its independent eateries, galleries, vintage clothing and furniture stores, the recently re-opened retro Dreamland theme park, and an influx of wealth from the DFL’s (down from London’s), Margate was recently named the 4th hippest town in the UK by The Times no less. It’s fitting, then, that the latest addition to Margate’s enterprises combines elements of all of the above; independent artisans offering food & drink, art & crafts,
fashion & fun – all wrapped up in a little bit of theatre. The “Old Kent Market” is certainly a unique proposition, and one which fits in with the vibe of a seaside town thriving by doing things its own way. The Old Kent Market resides in a cavernous space, originally built as a cinema over one hundred years ago. The building on Fort Hill, opposite the Turner Contemporary, was operational as a cinema until 1963 when it became a Vogue Bingo club, before returning to its cinema roots in the late 70’s, although this time only showing uncensored sex films! Most people, however, will probably remember the building as a snooker hall which occupied the space for the 31 years before work began on the Old Kent Market. Much of the architectural beauty of the building had been masked, however, during the snooker hall years, and much renovation and restoration had to take place before the Market finally opened last month – a good three years after Andy Barrett proposed his vision and began work on the project.
36
The original barrel vaulted ceiling has been restored to its former glory leaving more than an enough room for a doubledecker bus to occupy part of the ground floor.Yes, an actual double decker bus has been installed and modified and serves as a snack and licensed bar, with seating upstairs on the open deck for customers to enjoy their refreshments. The outside of the building has been painted a striking red with a 20ft high mural on one side of the building depicting fresh fruit, bread, meats and wine (and of course, a big lobster!), and the entrance. Also downstairs by the entrance to the market, fresh flowers are sold from an original century old flower cart, there is
[days out ]
an ice-cream concession, a greengrocers, a bakery serving up freshly baked artisan loaves and sweet treats, a fishmongers, a cheese stall (The Cheese Box), and a cake stall. Downstairs also currently plays home to Caribbean, Italian, and Japanese (sushi) food concessions, a homemade pie stall, a BBQ counter, and specialist wines, ciders, craft beers and cocktails. The stalls line the walls of the building with ample space in the main hall to sit and enjoy the manifold culinary delights and beverages on sale, or, on occasions, to enjoy live music or performances. As part of the renovation, a first floor mezzanine has been created opening up space for plenty more concessions. Upstairs you’ll find the non-food businesses ranging from a candle shop to a barbers, clothing, homeware, art and music, doggy treats, jewellery, and everything in between.
The Grand Opening, which took place on Sunday 1st May was a spectacle to behold, with live music, street performers (performing in and out of the market), salsa dancing, and even a flash mob! Although it’s not an everyday or even a weekly occurrence, OKM intend to host a selection of themed events adding live music and performance to the general on-goings of a busy indoor market. The space can and will also be used to stage workshops, giving the Old Kent Market an interactive, community feel to it. As the resurgence of Margate continues you can expect the Old Kent Market to go from strength to strength, keeping the enterprising spirit of East Kent’s independent retailers alive and bringing its visitors some great food, great drink, great shopping and great times!
While many of the produce stalls are likely to remain as permanent fixtures, it is envisaged that many of the stalls, particularly non-food, will rotate and change on a regular basis.Tenancies are offered to stall-holders on a week by week basis meaning that the Old Kent Market will always be offering something new and giving another local, independent business the chance the air their wares without the associated risks of having to commit to a more permanent arrangement. Of course, the admin of such an arrangement is no walk in the park, and Sol Mcgahan, the General Manager has worked flat out both in the run up to the opening, and pretty much ever since to make sure things run smoothly. As Sol told me, “It’s been a huge operation to get the Market up and running but we’ve already had some great feedback. We’re learning more every day but I’d say so far we’re more than happy with the direction we’re heading – and the people of Margate have been really enthusiastic about the project.” 37

Have you measured your kitchen? Have you considered how your family will use your kitchen’s space? Have you thought about lighting and storage? Have you thought about the kitchen triangle? (Don’t worry, we’ll explain).
When you are planning your perfect kitchen you need to think about storage. Being able to organise your cupboard, shelf and drawer space effectively will make your cooking, cleaning and entertaining so much more enjoyable.
Those are just a few of the ones that professional kitchen consultants would ask. Here are some pointers to help:
Without forethought and adequate planning often the kitchen ends up in wasting storage space and clutter takes over, completely nullifying its design. Ventilation - An efficient ventilation system, properly incorporated and designed to your kitchen’s standards, will make your life more pleasant and healthier, especially if you have an open kitchen. Investing in a good ventilation system is the way to go! Lighting - Functional or fashionable? The lighting in your kitchen should be functional rather than fashionable, but often you are able to choose lighting that is both.
The Kitchen Triangle - The sink, the cooker and the refrigerator are often referred to as the kitchen triangle, the area of greatest activity and ideally do not obstruct each other. Simple rule of thumb to avoid bumping into each other, or creating journeys to each point of the triangle, is to keep the distance between each to 10 -25 feet. How can this be best implemented in your kitchen? Remember Storage Space - The ability to quickly lay your hands on saucepans, 42
Think of how much time you spend in the kitchen. Besides cooking, how else do you use the kitchen? Eating, sitting and chatting over coffee, reading the paper, homework, paperwork, laundry, feeding pets, etc.? Lighting plays a big part. Work with professionals - Every kitchen is different and what will work in your kitchen, and what may not, is difficult to know unless you plan correctly. If something is unlikely to work well a professional will suggest a suitable
alternative. It is this expertise that, with a highly respected design service and project management experience, will deliver amazing results. Idris Elba
“I’m probably the most famous Bond actor in the world, and I’ve not even played the role.”
BY MELODY MILLER
49
[cover story ] I’ll start with the rumours, since hearsay is the fuel for intrigue, and Idris Elba, actor musician, producer and all round Mr desirable, certainly has people talking about him. Elba as Bond is a rumour that has been circling the Hackney-born actor for years, first fuelled by the Wiki leaks hack in 2010 that saw Sony emails from the highest platforms revealed; Amy Pascal, chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment apparently stating that “Idris should be the next Bond.” So why is he not? Good looking, check. Easy charm and blunt good looks, check. Impressive profile, great career track? Check. “I just don’t want to be the black James Bond,” he said. “Sean Connery wasn’t the Scottish James Bond and Daniel Craig wasn’t the blue-eyed James Bond so if I played him I don’t want to be called the black James Bond.” Being defined as a black actor rather than an actor is something Elba has often addressed, moving to New York where he lived for 16 years after finding the roles here in the UK somewhat limiting, once hinting that ‘there was only so many ‘gang leaders’ you can play.’ Most recently his voice was heard in the House of Commons; giving a 30 minute speech in January about the lack of diversity in film. Within 24 hours it had 10 million hits on social media and is one of 2016’s biggest talking points. People want to hear what he has to say.
Idris Elba with Thandie Newton and Gerard Butler at the Los Angeles Premiere of 'Rocknrolla'
“He turned me down at first,” says Oona King, politician and former chief of diversity for Channel Four. “He said, 'The thing is, I don't want to give a speech about black people'. But I was asking him to give a speech about everyone. His whole mentality is that everyone on the planet is a unique individual. The response to it was extraordinary.” He was among those not invited to 2016’s Oscars but stayed out of the #Oscarssowhitedebate, saying only that “we should not be casting films based on colour. We should be casting films based on story. That's really it.”
This is the bottom line for him, the thread that runs through his frustration with the constant Bond talk that journalists are pre-warned not to push with him. “The idea of having a man that is Bond played by a black man is the contributing intrigue to the discussion. And that, for me, is an off-put." So if he’s not Bond, who is Idris Elba? Born in Hackney, only child to immigrant parents from Sierra Leone, his father worked in Dagenham’s Ford factory, his mother a clerical assistant. Idris loved acting from his days at school in Canning Town, working night shifts in the factory and DJ’ing between auditions, acting perhaps an unusual path to follow for someone who described himself as ‘blending into the background.’ “Even with people looking at you, when you’re playing a character, you’re so hidden. There’s a weird little thing there, where you just feel most comfortable being someone else, because then they’re not really looking at you. Know what I mean?”
Idris Elba at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA 50
It’s hard to know what he means looking at a man described as both beautiful as well as masculine. Instead I look for a younger Elba, and find stories of him riding around wild one
[cover story ] night around the Ford factory in a golf cart before his escape to America and the dreams of New York had to offer. Early Elba sees him married young, hopeful and poor in New Jersey, and as things fell apart before they came together, he found himself sleeping in his car, selling drugs at gigs where he DJ’d , his marriage ending and with his estranged wife pregnant. But as with all great underdog stories a stroke of luck came along to pay off all the hard work and big dreams; the moment of glory for Idris Elba arriving in the form of The Wire. Stringer Bell was the beginning, and he still describes it as his defining role although it took a while for the world to catchup; the critically acclaimed drama hitting its popularity almost as the enticing character died. Nobody could trace him back to Hackney in those auditions, where famously they were all were fooled by his American accent, perfectly practiced. “Well, my favourite actors, like Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep, manage to do it. Change their voice so convincingly you're, like, 'F**k' I wanted to be in that sector.” These are his influences, and he advises those who ask for tips to watch what Meryl Streep does in Doubt, as well as reading Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist; a story of choice and fate that we all have within our grasp should we chose the path. Elba has read it twice a year since he was 26.
sadness added to the weight of this project with the actor taking on his own journey creating a character album in South Africa, with the music written and performed out of his love for the project paid for out of his own money before he got a record deal.
the media that he was the proud father of a baby boy. He had been dating a woman in Florida for a couple of years and he described having a son as one of the happiest times of his life. But then came suggestions that things were not as they seemed.
When you invest so much of yourself into a story about a person that meant so much to many, it’s hard to let go of the ghost, the actor moving onto the filming of Thor 2 straight after and consequently struggling with the jarring contrast.
“It wasn’t immediately obvious—well, it was, because he didn’t look like me,” Elba says. “But it wasn’t immediately obvious what had gone down.”
“I was like, ‘This is torture, man. I don’t want to do this, 24 hours ago, I was Mandela’. When I walked into the set the extras called me Madiba. I was literally walking in this man’s boots. [Within] six months, the crew, we were all so in love with this film we had made. I was him. I was Mandela, practically. Then there I was, in this stupid harness, with this wig and this sword and these contact lenses. It ripped my heart out.” The story I dig out on Elba that stays with me isn’t Mandela, it’s not Bond or tales from Dagenham Ford factory, it’s from 2010 when he announced to
A paternity test showed that in fact the child wasn’t his, and Elba was crushed. “To be given that and then have it taken away so harshly was like taking a full-on punch in the face: POW.” I think of that love, momentarily bright and fierce and now gone, the child a memory he only mentioned once in public and now tries to forget, pain a demon you can’t hide from but can at least exercise in a career where emotion is the fuel for the fire. Idris Elba certainly is burning bright; “I’m a very popular actor, I’m not famous, I’m popular. And that popularity is at a feverish pitch at the moment. And I’m definitely aware of it, and I’m taking advantage of the opportunities.”
If you want to understand Elba, his passion, his drive, then look to Mandela, the 2013 critically acclaimed movie. This is a body of work that he talks about with real love and care, a project that took him far beyond himself, even spending a night in a cell where Mandela fought for his liberty, an experience that laid a foundation for the feeling he brought to the character. “When I think about how my performance came together, it was a lot to do with how I reacted to that one night.” Mandela died during the premier of the movie while Elba was sat next to the Duchess of Cambridge, and he was invited to the state funeral alongside world leaders and politicians. MOZART
AT THE MANOR
On Wednesday 8th June Eastwell Manor will once again play host to the talented trio of Dorothee Jansen (soprano), Hanns Heinz Odenthal (violin), and Haydn Rawstron (continuo and narration) as they give the music, story and the historical background (known as the “Narropera format”) of Mozart’s opera “Cosi Fan Tutte”. Last year Jansen, Odenthal and Rawstron brought to life Mozart’s Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro to the Manor, and they are back in 2016 with the third opera the great Austrian composer wrote along with Librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. These three highly successful and internationally known musicians are no strangers to Eastwell Manor. Again, they have just completed a very well received season of ‘Narropera’ in New Zealand as well as various European venues. Dorothee has performed in Opera Houses all over the world in a variety of roles. Narropera
(or narrated opera) aims to make one of the most complex of art froms more accessible and easily understood by general audiences. "Whereas opera is understandably inflexible given the numerous forces that require coordinating," explains Rawstron, "narropera's chambermusic trio-presentation and its storytelling/singing interaction allow for considerable flexibility and creativity, not only in the preparation of the individual narroperas, but also in terms of a certain improvisation in actual performance."
Two options are available for interested parties. For £25 per person one can enjoy a champagne reception on the terrace at 6.30pm followed by the performance in the Rose Garden Room. For those who want to make an evening of it, for £60 per person a four course Table d’Hote dinner with coffee and petits fours in the Manor Restaurant will also be included. Call 01233 213020 or email: reservations@eastwellmanor.co.uk to make your booking.

A DAY TO REMEMBER AT
THE CORNER HOUSE BY VANESSA BENNETT
Kent’s soubriquet as the Garden of England was coined for a reason. The gently rolling landscape, clement weather conditions and fertile earth have made it a growers’ paradise for centuries. It is renowned for its orchards and fields of fruit, hops, vegetables and flowers, and although times have changed and demands for different produce with them, its quality can still compete with the best from around the world.
For a young chef whose whole ethos is predicated on sourcing local, seasonal goods of the very highest calibre, there really could be no better location than Thanet to establish a restaurant,The Corner House, in a place famed for having the most temperate conditions in Kent. Luckily for Matt Sworder he grew up in the area, so was already familiar with the diverse produce it had to offer;
60
taking over his family’s old restaurant, Morton’s Fork, in the pretty village of Minster was perhaps inevitable - despite training for a lucrative career in the city Matt’s love of cooking was irrepressible. This passion was something fostered from an early age, helping out his father, David, a respected local restauranteur of many years standing. Regardless of still being only 27 when he set up his business, Matt
had accrued an impressive amount of experience in some of the most esteemed restaurants in London, including Gordon Ramsey’s La Noisette. Matt’s strategy is straightforward and clear. “The Corner House offers an informal dining experience that focuses on simple dishes executed properly.” Whilst this may sound easy don’t be deceived; the cooking is of the very highest standard,
[food & drink ] A short trip down the road took us to Spanton’s Farm, where the farmer, Matthew Spanton, kindly gave us a tour of his packaging plant, sorting and despatching up to 100 tonnes of asparagus a year to Sainsburys, local shops and restaurants, and his own outlet next to the Co-op at Minster roundabout. Although the weather has been a little cold recently, meaning the asparagus tips have been reluctant to emerge, we were able to see some of them reaching maturity, basking in the warmth of the poly-tunnels snaking their way across the countryside. Matthew informed us that you can actually watch the asparagus grow - by up to eight inches on a sunny day - so if you ever run out of things to watch on Netflix, you know where to go.
with dishes lovingly prepared and imaginatively presented in a cosy wooden bistro setting many London gastro-pubs could only dream of achieving. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with none of the stiffness that sometimes accompanies a fine dining experience. Matt has taken considerable time and effort in recruiting a friendly and professional team to support him, evident as soon as your coat is taken as you walk through the door. The emphasis on locality and family is further established by the presence of his father, David, who is an affable host front of house, only too happy to share his enthusiasm and knowledge about the local provenance of the dishes and drinks on offer. You’re welcome to visit for a meal in the restaurant, a drink in the bar, or to try some of the exciting new bar snacks menu. If you really don’t want to leave, and I can guarantee you won’t, there are even two beautifully appointed ensuite guest rooms, with charming views of the higgledy-piggledy rooftops of historic Minster. Seasonality is key at The Corner House, reflected in the periodic menu changes, so much so they can vary almost daily, as Matt sources as many ingredients as possible from a radius of twenty miles. Our visit coincided with the start of
the local Asparagus season, and we were treated to shared boards which catered for both the vegetarians and meateaters amongst us, including a mouthwateringly light Asparagus,Tomato and Onion Tart accompanied by a green salad so fresh it might have just been picked,The Corner House’s own special blend of nuts (the seasoning a house secret), and a crunchy and perfectly balanced homemade piccalilli. This is not forgetting the divinely succulent griddled asparagus spears with dips, homemade Proper pork scratchings, and a Chicken liver parfait with port jelly and toast. Oh, and the thrice cooked chips. Homemade is a word you see a lot on the menus, right down to the condiments such as tomato ketchup and mayonnaise, and as for the fresh bread on the table before the meal came – well, let’s just say I was completely smitten after the first bite. This ‘light’ lunch was washed down with a refreshingly crisp, dry sparkling brut, from the award-winning Chapel Down vineyard in Tenterden. Matt is a passionate advocate for his local suppliers, and was eager to show us exactly where some of our lunch had started out. There are other chefs who may source locally, and some who actually don their wellies and physically do.
“THE CORNER HOUSE OFFERS AN INFORMAL DINING EXPERIENCE THAT FOCUSES ON SIMPLE DISHES EXECUTED PROPERLY.” We were fortunate to have an awardwinning chef with us - Matt’s impressive accolades include being listed in the Michelin Guide 2016,Waitrose Good Food Guide 2016 and coming first at the Taste of Kent Awards 2015 - and despite standing in a muddy field, Matt certainly proved his mettle when it came to his philosophy of simple food done well. Some freshly cut asparagus, seasoned in golden rapeseed oil from Kentish Oils - a company based in the hamlet of Woodchurch, whose delicious range of oils and brand of Kent Crisps are in demand as far away as Dubai and Mexico – a dash of salt and pepper, and a camping stove were all that was needed for him to demonstrate his considerable skills. After sautéing them in a dry, hot pan for a few minutes, the secret to perfection was a splash of water to steam, and with a last minute inspiration of a dash of Gadds’ No.3 ale - which we
61
[food & drink ] were happily sampling as we enjoyed the performance - the tender young stems certainly didn’t hang around for long. Nothing could have illustrated Matt’s ideology more fittingly. Our final expedition of the day had to be a visit to Eddie Gadds’ brewery, Ramsgate Brewery, originally started in 2002 at the back of a local bar, but now occupying an impressive, purpose built production site in Broadstairs supplying ale and speciality beers to businesses across the county, including The Corner House. Although someone more usually seen with a glass of something sparkling in her hand, my notion about ale being a drink solely for men with beards and a penchant for knitwear was soon (partially) dispelled after Eddie’s rhapsodic tour of the brewery, which included tasting a somewhat comprehensive range of its products. Eddie’s passion for what he does is infectious, and if love could be listed on the ingredients it would be right up there with the East Kent Goldings hops he is well-known for using. My favourite of the day, which is on draught in the bijoux bar on site, was the Gadds’ No.5, supposedly one of the bitterest ales on sale, although I found it surprisingly smooth and mellow, with gentle notes of toffee and liquorice. I certainly left the premises in a much better informed and merrier state. Fortunately for the rest of Kent, Matt has decided to recreate his winning concept at his second restaurant, The Corner House Canterbury, to be opened in June at the old site of The Flying Horse pub. It will be a more ambitious venture, with fifty covers and three ensuite rooms, but will still champion a dynamic, seasonal menu that showcases and supports the best of local British producers. Although having to work under planning guidelines to restore this beautiful 16th century coach house, Matt is excited by the new design possibilities. He enthuses, “We have created a restaurant on the ground floor with an open plan kitchen, so there’s a connection between the diners and the food being prepared.” For someone who’s watched Matt in his element, albeit in a slightly less glamorous, muddier setting, I strongly suggest you don’t miss the show.

Renée's Health Food Tips
The sad truth of a modern day diet is that food related diseases such as diabetes are on the increase. We are all aware of the risk but are we doing enough to protect ourselves and our family from what has for 1 in 3 Americans become the norm?
DIABETES
PANDEMIC
BY RENÉE MAGUIRE
For useful advices and tips on a healthy balanced diet go to www.rawchifood.com
T
oo many of us are making poor lifestyle choices. Fast food is convenient, cheaper and with people leading busy lives, consideration to health conscious food is not at the forefront of people’s minds. It’s time to sit up and look at what effects our diet is actually having on our immune system, as Type 2 diabetes is a direct result of a person’s poor food choices. Excessive refined foods such as bread, biscuits, white pasta, confectionery, ice cream, leads to the blood sugar levels rising in the body, which inhibits the body’s ability to function properly and regulate insulin levels, which will results in Type 2 diabetes. The good news is although diabetes can be a life threatening disease, it need not be. By controlling blood sugar levels and eating a diet rich in organic wholefoods and superfoods, the damage to your body can be controlled and with conscious efforts, reversed. Movie star Halle Berry was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and was insulin dependent, she followed a diet rich in raw whole foods and is now know longer insulin dependent. She claims to have cured her condition by following a healthy predominantly raw diet. A diet rich in raw whole foods includes fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
64
When food is cooked, many of the nutrients are lost, as much as 80%.The natural enzymes within the food are depleted and our body is required to produce more enzymes to digest the meal. This put a strain on our digestive system and also takes much more energy from the body to digest the food we have consumed. It takes the body a matter of hours to digest a salad and yet it can take up to two days to digest a meal consisting of meat. If at the same time our body is also trying to counter act the increase in insulin levels due to excessive refined foods the strain is again increased. We all aspire to lead healthy, fulfilling lives and through a balanced healthy diet we can protect ourselves against diseases such as diabetes, heart conditions as well as other food related ailments such as IBS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and food allergies such as gluten and lactose intolerances. The key is balance, sacrificing all of the food you love takes a strong will and that “all or nothing” regime can leave you feeling deflated and set for failure before you even begin. By gradually making better choices, educating yourself on foods that are highly nutritious and adding them to your diet, you will begin to feel the health benefits. Energy levels increase, weight is controlled, and your stress levels reduced.
Finding the happy alternative to your firm favourites is also the key to success. Taking the foods you love and adapting a healthier version. I make a sumptuous chocolate dessert, it is prepared with natural cacao powder, avocado and agave syrup, which is the sugar of a cactus and is an accepted sugar for diabetics. These are subtle changes and yet they can make such an impact to your health and wellbeing. Diabetes does not have to be an inevitability, it’s a lifestyle choice, and you don’t have to be another statistic to the global diabetes crisis. Enjoying a balanced healthy diet will result in a balanced healthy you. Renée Maguire is a chef, raw nutrition coach, food writer and motivational healthy eating speaker. Through discovering the benefit of her own health improvements she has dedicated her work to helping others find a balance between the foods they love to eat and the foods their body needs. BBQ RIB
LEE BEHAN
BEEF OF BY LEE BEHAN
SERVES 8
Lee's love affair with food started at an early age, joining his Chef father in professional kitchens every spare weekend or holiday available. At the tender age of 13 he cooked dessert for a list of dignitaries which included HRH Princess Anne; opting for a seasonal Summer Pudding with clotted cream. As he notes himself "it involved no real cooking". Lee has had the opportunity to cook with many of the UK's leading chef's including Mark Hix, Anna Hansen MBE and Gizzie Erksine; celebrities such as actress and designer Sadie Frost, singer Boy George and Hollywood actor Stanley Tucci have all enjoyed Lee's food via varied & epic fundraising dinners.
When the sun shines we start to think about the BBQ’s, al fresco dining, & lazy days spent eating in the garden. Most of us own a BBQ, and most us own a BBQ with a lid. If you are one of the lucky ones then you can transform your Sunday lunch, whatever the weather, by roasting / barbecuing outdoors, which imparts a lovely smokiness to the meat. INGREDIENTS: 2.3KG RIB OF BEEF (BONE IN) 1TBSP EACH OF FRESH THYME, ROSEMARY, OREGANO 2 TBSP OLIVE OIL SALT & PEPPER
METHOD: 1
1 hour before you are ready to start cooking, light the BBQ with the best possible charcoal you can find. Keep the coals to just one side of the coal rack
2 Take the beef out of the fridge and its
wrapping and leave to air for 30 mins
3 Mix the thyme, rosemary & oregano
with the olive oil and lots of freshly ground salt and black pepper and then rub all over the beef
4 Once you’ve waited the hour for your
coals to heat up place a drip tray on the cleared side and half fill with water
5 Place your beef over the hot coals and
cook for 5 minutes on the direct heat, turning every minute
66
6 Once you’ve seared the beef all over
then move away from the direct heat and place away from the coals and directly over your drip tray
7 Close the lid and leave for 40 minutes
and then reopen and turn
8 Cook the beef for a further 35
minutes if you want to enjoy your beef rare or 45 minutes for medium to well
9 Remove from the BBQ and leave to
rest in a warm place for 30 minutes and then serve.

SALT MARSH
LAMB
BY DEV BISWAL OF THE AMBRETTE
DEV BISWAL Dev Biswal grew up in Calcutta and trained at the Dubai Sheraton, before moving to London, aged 26 in 2003 for spells at Mangoes and Eriki. He became a partner in The Indian Princess in Margate in December 2006, becoming patron and rebranding it as The Ambrette in 2010. His second restaurant, The Ambrette @ Rye opened in November 2011, and a third Ambrette opened this July in Canterbury. The restaurants are recommended by all the country’s top restaurant guides, including Michelin, AA, Good Food and Harden’s Guide.
The lamb we use is Romney breed which grazes on the salt marshes in coastal Kent. The meat is naturally sweeter, juicier and has a natural salty flavour due to coastal herbs and samphire in its diet. It also has excellent marbling due to the tough environment all conditions compared to pasture fed animals. Most salt marsh lamb today is exported to France where it is prized by top chefs.

SUMMER
TRAVEL
SPECIAL
BY JAILLAN YEHIA
THE REIGN OF SPAIN Our travel editor Jaillan Yehia, of SavoirThere.com, shares her hand-picked guides to two of Spain’s lesser-known destinations - from fulfilling your foodie fantasies in the Spanish seaside city of Valencia to the ultimate list of must do’s on the tranquil Balearic island of Menorca.
Summer is finally upon us, and for Brits that usually means one thing: it’s time to rekindle our long-standing love affair with Spain. Over 12 million of us visit our favourite southerly neighbour on holiday each year, and no matter how many travel trends come and go, our attraction to holidays in Spain endures. So whether you’re looking for your next vibrant European city break on the Spanish mainland this year, or fancy a leisurely and laid-back holiday with an emphasis on nature, both within easy reach of Kent, then we’ve got you covered.
SPAIN’S SECRET CULINARY CAPITAL: VIVA VALENCIA When British Airways’ predecessor British European Airways opened it’s first ever route to Spain from the UK back in 1957, the original destination for those pioneering English holidaymakers was none other than Valencia.
Fast forward almost 60 years and many Brits have been to Barcelona, mooched around Madrid and conquered the Costas - but a surprisingly large number have missed out on a trip to Spain’s third largest city.
Best known for the celebrated Spring festival Las Fallas (meaning ‘The Fires’) when it comes alive with history and tradition,Valencia goes into overdrive in March attracting up to a million tourists, here to enjoy the processions, parties and parades and soak up the celebratory atmosphere. But visit at any other time and this port city on the Mediterranean Sea will give you an atmospheric old town and a beach break all rolled into one; there’s a palpable creative edge involving plenty of street art and cool culture, as well as a dedicated coastal area, making it the perfect city sojourn for those looking for a Barcelona in miniature, or even a Spanish-style Berlin. Now Valencia’s exciting culinary scene has become one of the true highlights of any visit - and a reason in its own right to jump on that plane. Here’s your cut-out-and-keep guide to Valencia’s food highlights for visitors:
71
[travel ]
SOAK UP THE CAFE CULTURE Where: Dulce de Leche If you want to try Valencia’s cafe culture and avoid the smattering of tourists with whom you’re sharing the city, then heading to the burgeoning hub for the thriving artistic community is highly recommended. While there are two branches of cool cafe Dulce de Leche it’s the Ruzafa branch (that’s a neighbourhood just south of Estación del Norte) which is the place to see and be seen for the creative crowd. There’s an eye-popping and mouthwatering array of desserts and cakes on display - and if you can take your eyes off the sweets, the people watching isn’t bad either. www.pasteleriadulcedeleche.com
SAMPLE THE MENU DEL DIA Where: La Lola The Menu del Dia is popular across Spain, offering a set lunch at a reasonable price and giving holidaymakers an excuse to stop the sightseeing and indulge in a leisurely midday meal, Continental style. Here at La Lola the bohemian owner has cultivated the ambience of a Miro painting come to life in a contemporary space and the lively ambience makes the place popular with visitors of every nationality. It’s well worth seeking out despite being quietly tucked away down a flower-filled alleyway, which is teaming with the street art that seems to be Valencia’s signature.
72
They offer a great value €15 Menu del Día which consists of hearty-yet-healthy local dishes presented artfully and with an innovative twist. But if you’re seeking classic Spanish cuisine look no further than the three types of traditional paella, made with Albufera rice and saffron.
TRY TRADITIONAL SPANISH PAELLA Where: El Canyar Mountains of fluffy bright yellow rice is a show for tourists; the prerequisite for authentic paella is a thinly covered pan of caramel-coloured rice punctuated by duck, rabbit and other meaty chunks, and if you must, seafood. Similarly paella is a weekend lunchtime dish, like a Spanish Sunday roast so having it for dinner or in a hurry isn’t on either. But until you’ve had paella in its birthplace of Valencia you could be forgiven for being in the dark about those rules.
The best paella in town has been produced at El Canyar under the watchful eye of the same chef for 28 years - and there’s a full menu of tinglingly fresh seafood on offer, including standout Spanish dishes such as fresh prawn gazpacho and a delicate hake from the country’s north. Competing for attention with the food are the restaurant walls: world famous actors, musicians and other sportsmen have been asked to doodle on their napkins here - so everyone from Michael Schumacher, to Yoko Ono and Daniel Craig have their scribbles on display. www.canyarrestaurante.com
SAVOUR SEASIDE TAPAS Where: Casa Montaña After 180 years selling tapas at this very spot to trading fishermen word has gotten around of just how good it is. On our visit there were a surprising number of English voices reverberating around the casual olde worlde dining room - but somehow neither the
[travel ] authenticity of the surroundings nor the standard of the food has been compromised by sharing it with people who’ve arrived here by plane rather than boat. Wine is still sold, as it was to the fishermen, by the litre to take away and all the original rusty wine taps serve as wall decorations to retain a tangible link with the past. Every vestige of the history at Casa Montaña seems to not only survive - but to continue to be celebrated, and the family atmosphere is palpable. You’ll find a menu of simple and unfussy tapas with flavours elevated by the quality of the handful of ingredients on the plate - tuna served with cardamom and mace and a snack known as habas mi-chirones - a bean dish which turns out to be extremely moreish.
As well as being famous for rice, the region is renowned for oranges and everything from scented soaps to artisan jams come in a delightful orange variety - as well as Agua de Valencia - the city’s famed and fortified alcoholic tipple which is mixed with orange juice, what else?
One of the best aspects of holidays in Spain are of course the fresh vegetables which have the bright taste of sunshine that is all too often absent from what we’re used to outside the Mediterranean and they’re much in evidence here.
There are also numerous edible temptations from the surrounding area; hand-crafted beers made with blossom and honey, wines aged in clay pots and even hand-painted kitchen tiles, meaning no foodie could hope to leave empty handed.
www.emilianobodega.com
SHOPPING FOR FOODIES IN VALENCIA
The main store is a feast for the eyes - it’s said to be the city’s oldest building with a ceiling that would have Michelangelo in awe.
Where: Mercado Central Valencia’s Mercado Central is right in the Centro Historico making it virtually unavoidable whether you’re a foodie or not, but anyone would do well to devote some time for a tour and tastings in the 8,000 square metre culinary palace.
www.originalcv.es Unless you’re staying in self-catering accommodation the temptation to buy everything in sight will need to be resisted, but there are packaged options available - jamón ibérico being the obvious choice, especially as many vendors offer samples meaning you can try before you buy. The market also makes the ideal place to sample a quick horchata, the signature Valencian drink made by pressing tiger nuts with copious amounts of sugar and served, as if not yet sweet enough, with long thin sugary donuts called fartons.
GOURMET VALENCIAN SOUVENIRS Where: Original CV If you’re looking for a tasty souvenir for a friend back home with impeccable taste, the beautifully decorated cloth bags of Arroz Albufera are a uniquely Valencian option.
WHERE TO STAY IN VALENCIA There are plenty of gorgeous bolt holes in Valencia - and depending on your needs you could choose a city centre hotel within walking distance of the Old Town such as SH Ingles, or for the ultimate indulgence try the luxurious beachside spa hotel Balneario Las Arenas which is the perfect retreat after a day of shopping, sightseeing - and of course food sampling - in the city. www.inglesboutique.com www.hotelvalencialasarenas.com For more information about Valencia online visit TurisValencia.es You can also follow Valencia on social media (Facebook,Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest) via the hashtag #VivaValencia

Xoriguer continues to hand-make artisan gin and is open to the public for tastings. There are a variety of different drinks and flavours to choose from - everything from a gluhwein-style schnapps to a prickly pear infusion - including the signature Mahon gin which can be bought here in the traditional stoneware bottle, complete with carry handle for ease of swigging, true sailor style.
GET BEYOND THE BALEARIC’S BEST BEACHES: 7 THINGS YOU MUST DO IN MENORCA
Best known for its beautiful white sandy beaches and Caribbean-worthy caves and coves (known as calas in Spanish) it’s the chosen destination for many natureloving families seeking a low key beach break. But there’s plenty of ways to relax here that don’t involve a sun lounger.
Just twice the size of the Isle of Wight and declared a Biosphere reserve in 1993, the island of Menorca is sleepier and more tranquil than its big hitting Balearic neighbours, with a reputation for impeccable unspoiled coastlines and eco tourism which is a world away from the hedonistic holidays on offer in Ibiza and Majorca.
HERE IS YOUR CUT-OUTAND-KEEP GUIDE TO MENORCA’S TOP 7 MUSTDO’S: 1. Climb Bull Mountain For Legends & Lookout Points The highest point in Menorca (at 342 m) is Monte Toro, meaning Bull Mountain, and it has a special place in the hearts of residents, as well as being a lure for tourists seeking stunning vistas. The legend behind this lookout point inspired the name: back in the 13th century a light was seen shining on the mountain top, causing the locals to investigate.
3. Explore Ancient Burial Monuments Menorca’s answer to the Pyramids and Stonehenge, the taulas and navetas give clues to the rich pre-history of Menorca and make for an interesting and educational excursion. Menorca wasn’t inhabited at all until around 5,000 years ago, as the rocky nature of the island means it wasn’t deemed as fertile as the neighbouring Balearics. By the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age the tribal population of Menorca began to grow, and started building burial chambers for their dead, which have some gruesome and fascinating stories and leave a few unanswered questions? Were the giant T-shaped taula monuments sacrificial altars or primitive astrological moon-dials? 4. Navigate The Cami de Cavalls
A giant bull appeared and used its horns to break the rock and reach the very top where the people found an effigy of The Virgin Mary - with absolutely no explanation of how it arrived there. Now there’s a church at the top.
Keen walkers can choose anything from the easiest stroll through the Menorcan countryside to tack-ling a unique walking holiday on the island that’s anything but pedestrian: the historic Cami de Cavalls.
2. Say ‘Gin Gin’ at Xoriguer Distillery
This 20-section coastal path takes the visitor around the entire island, revealing some amazing secluded beaches and charming villages along the way.
Menorcan gin was of course made popular by the British Navy - back in the day when alcohol was a more trustworthy tipple than water due to its disinfecting qualities - and the good news for us today is that local distillery 74
www.xoriguer.es
You can enjoy Menorca’s idyllic walking trails at any time of year, but spring makes the ideal time to take in the surrounding scenery: 900 types of native plant life
[travel ] burst into bloom, and it’s also the height of season for many species of migratory birds who flock to Menorca. 5. Snap Up Shoes As Souvenirs For such a small island, Menorca packs a big punch in the shoe department: whether you know it or not you’re already familiar with Menorca’s biggest export: traditional Menorcan sandals known as abarcas (sometimes avarcas) or menorquinas have become one of the most enduring and popular styles of summer footwear in the world - and they’re still made by hand on the island. There are endless shops selling these comfy and stylish shoes in every combination of colours you can imagine, but the local tip is to head to the port at Mahon where Toni’s Abarcas workshop is still using traditional materials and techniques that haven't changed in generations. High class shoe brands Pretty Ballerinas and Jamie Mascaro were also founded in Menorca, with a history dating back to 1918 when the firm began making dance shoes so that the upper class ladies could practice ballet. Now you’ll be doing pirouettes when you see the factory outlet prices at their main location in Ferreries - and your head will be spinning at the choice of colours and styles on offer. www.mascaro.com 6. Get in the Soup with your Bank Manager Q.When does a bowl of soup cost €70? A.When it’s the signature Menorcan Caldereta Lobster soup prepared at the island’s upscale eatery Cafe Balear, and making a hearty dinner in its own right. If you want to splash out on seafood while you’re in Menorca there are a million places to do so - and the food is usually ocean fresh and delightful, especially when washed down with a sea view.
But real fruit de mer fans can do no better than paying a visit to this high class harbourside restaurant which serves a great selection of seafood, including delicacies like escupinas: think of them as the discerning person's oyster, a type of local cockle that’s sensitive to the environment making them more delicate and rare, and costing twice the price. www.cafebalear.com 7. Kayak The Island’s Coves and Calas
Where To Stay In Menorca: Artiem Audax Spa & Wellness Hotel Of course there are no shortage of family friendly hotels on the island - though happily Menorca’s strict planning laws mean you won’t find high rises and endless resorts cluttering the shoreline here, it’s all about hotels which blend into the environment.
It’s almost essential to see one of the Spain’s most truly unspoiled coastlines from the sea, and you can do this on a boat trip of course, but it’s only by kayak that you’ll have the once in a lifetime chance to enter the multicoloured world of Menorca’s sea caves. The turquoise waters are always an inviting place for a dip, but there’s something undeniably empowering about tackling this rugged coast on a kayak and being at one with nature in a place famous for it. You can also clamber out at various points to see that gorgeous coast from a quiet rocky outcrop which, having arrived by sea kayak, you’ll have all to yourself. www.menorcaenkayak.com
If you’d like to leave the kids behind then the adults-only concept by boutique hotel group Artiem is ideal: their Audax Spa & Wellness Hotel at Cala Galdana, 25 minutes from Ciutadella, is a short walk to the beach and surrounded by abundant nature. The staff are friendly and helpful, the atmosphere laid-back. www.artiemhotels.com For more information about Menorca online visit www.menorca.es You can also follow Menorca on social media (Facebook,Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest) via the hashtag #MustSeeMenorca

FELLA’S FESTIVAL
GROOMING GUIDE
BY BOBBY GORDON OF FELLA, CANTERBURY
Obviously we all go to festivals for music & good times, but fashion now plays a huge role in the festival season. With this in mind it's important to remain clean, stylish & looking good. Here are some practical & recommended grooming products that are compact, fuss free & effective, making them a must for festival survival. AMERICAN CREW BOOST POWDER
This anti-gravity volume powder with a matt finish will give your festival hair lift & thickness. The weightless powder adds grit for dramatic gravity defying texture & provides a flexible hold. This one is Fella's favourite product of the summer. WINGMAN DEODORISING WIPES
BATISTE FRESH COOL & CRISP DRY SHAMPOO P20
Fingers crossed that the sun will be shining this summer. In which case it's so important to protect yourself from those ultra-violet rays. Fella recommends P20 which once applied will protect you for up to 10 hours. Never under estimate the power of the sun, and don’t settle for anything less than the best – as well as staying healthy you want to look your best, and even the most stylish clothes and haircut won’t make up for the crimson catastrophe of a sun burnt bod!
This unisex dry shampoo is as liberating for blokes as it is for the babes. It’s the ideal way to instantly clean & freshen up your hair between washes. With no need to queue for the festival wash rooms (if there are any!), you just spray this bad boy 30cm from your head, massage in with your fingertips and volia, you’re good to go!
MEN-U MATT REFRESH & MOISTURISE SET
Wingman have revolutionised the festival tradition of the wet wipe shower. With its soothing aloe vera & cooling peppermint oil, Wingman wipes help remove dirt, bacteria & excess oils that can build up throughout the day. Amazing value for money & a festival must.
Perfect for a weekend away this set contains healthy face wash, refresh gel & matt moisturiser. The 15ml tubes mean you will have plenty of space for booze in your bag.
Fella is the destination for sharp haircuts. Founded in 2009 by Bobby Gordon, a 15 year veteran of some of Soho’s hottest hair joints. Fella is located in the heart of Canterbury, and brings a unique boutique feel to the barber shop experience like no other in the area. With no appointment necessary & late night openings you can kick back & listen to some cool beats whilst one of the expert stylists take care of you. Fella has a highly trained & skilled team who pride themselves on grooming for the modern man. 91

East Kent Couple Win National Boarding School Award A national achievement award for professionals who work in boarding has been won by a team of married House Parents at a Kent school. Matthew and Elena Nichol from Wellesley House Preparatory School in Broadstairs were named as joint winners of the Stephen Winkley Boarding Achievement Award. The couple were announced at the BSA Annual Conference for Heads dinner at The Lowry Theatre on Wednesday 4 May during the association’s Golden Jubilee Annual Conference. The award was introduced in 2015 by the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA), which represents over 500 UK independent and state boarding schools. It is named in memory of Stephen Winkley, former headmaster of Uppingham School and Rossall School and
the award marks the contribution of someone from the ‘boarding family’.
Matthew and Elena, have worked at Wellesley House since 1986, and moved into ‘The Orchard’, the girls’ boarding house in 1990. They were nominated by headmaster, Simon O’Malley who described the married team as “uniquely and selflessly dedicated to the girls in their care.”
Matthew Nichol said, “As a former pupil of Uppingham School where Stephen Winkley was Headmaster, I am very proud to receive such an award given in his name. I’m sure he would approve.”
Elena Nichol said, “It is a privilege to accept this award from the BSA. I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to look after hundreds of girls in the last 26 years. I hope I was able to make a small contribution towards their all-round development.” BSA Chief Executive Robin Fletcher said, “Thousands of professionals work tirelessly to provide boarding of the highest quality to over 75,000 students across the UK.” He adds, “The Stephen Winkley Boarding Achievement Award recognises the outstanding commitment of boarding staff and we are delighted the award has gone to such worthy winners.” 93

BUSINESSMAN OF THE MONTH
Former banker Jim Hunt teaches people how to invest in the stock market and beat the so-called professionals at their own game. His proprietary system has avoided all crashes and made an average of 36% a year since 1983… and it’s a very simple system that anyone can be taught to use.
He shares his tricks of the trade with hundreds of people at weekend investment boot camps. Attendees come from all walks of life, keen to see their money work for them in this era of low or no interest rates. Going by the long list of testimonials Jim has received, they are not disappointed.
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR TEENAGE SELF NOW?
We wanted to find more about Jim, so caught up with him during a break in proceedings.
Learn how the stock market works and get a head start so you can make a hundred million before you're thirty! But also, try to enjoy the journey more along the way. When you're financially free, the world is full of options. Money is just a means to an end.
WHAT ARE YOUR EARLIEST MEMORIES?
WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I wasn't exactly born with a silver spoon in my mouth, and times were tough, especially in the early seventies. But I was happy.
Making money from stocks is great, but it can also be lonely. So I particularly enjoy teaching and interacting with others who want to learn about trading. I get a real buzz when total novices become experts because of what I have taught them, and that’s something that money can't buy.
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU LEFT SCHOOL?
I can vividly recall drawing a picture at primary school, after being told to portray what we wanted to be when we grew up. I drew a man in a suit standing next to a table of money, and I said I wanted to be a millionaire.
NAME YOUR THREE IDEAL DINNER GUESTS
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
Jesse Livermore (a long dead and extremely famous trader), Ray Kroc (founder of McDonald's, and master of an amazing business and real estate system) and Dave Gahan (lead singer of Depeche Mode, because I've been a huge fan and grown up with their music).
My first job was at a bank, and then I worked for a property investment firm.
ANY HOBBIES/INTERESTS?
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB?
I'm now a self-employed business owner and stock trader. I'm constantly studying the stock market and perfecting new methods for trading. Then I enjoy breaking down those new discoveries into simple strategies that anyone can replicate. 98
