INTRODUCTION

welcome Dear Parents and Edge Grove Alumni, It is with great pleasure that I once again write the introduction for Life at the Edge; a magazine bursting with memories of a fantastic year at the school. It is easy to forget how much actually happens, the breadth of opportunity and variety of experiences enjoyed by every single pupil. As Aristotle said over 2000 years ago, ‘Schools have two roles, to teach students about the best that mankind has thought and created, and to teach character and values to help students live lives that are meaningful and good. Schools should prioritise interpersonal exchanges, spirituality and social concerns, taking into account the collective’s need rather than individuals.’ Education is therefore founded on the values it instils in its community and once you have forgotten everything you have learnt at school it is, as Aristotle observed, character that remains. At Edge Grove, we aim to instil the values of kindness, integrity, honesty, perseverance, courage, resilience and self-discipline and to build each child’s character through academic endeavours, a full and varied curriculum and our exciting range of co-curricular and after-school activities. We want our children to be intellectually curious, to flounder intelligently, to be able to think for themselves and to challenge themselves academically, in every

sense, and always be keen to know and do more. I am pleased to report that Edge Grove goes from strength to strength in all areas of school life. With over 30 scholarships, exhibitions and awards to senior schools, it has been a record year of success and achievement. We aim for excellence and our pupils embrace the challenge. The school’s infrastructure and resources continue to be developed. My long-held ambition to acquire Edge Grove Park has been realised and the additional twenty acres have been much utilised and enjoyed by the children for both outdoor learning, break and lunch times and the daily mile! Our ten year plan has now reached stage five with the building of a new estates yard and the start of the construction of the new Lower School building which will be completed in Autumn 2019. The pupil roll is once again full and interest in the school continues to grow with waiting lists at all age groups. It is certainly a very exciting time in the school’s history. I would like to thank all the staff, teaching and non-teaching who work so tirelessly and with immense skill, dedication and commitment to allow our children to succeed and experience so many opportunities in such an inspirational setting. The people at Edge Grove do go that extra mile and my grateful thanks to them all for their hard work, support and good humour. The successes

and values of our pupils are nurtured, shaped and modelled by their teachers. This magazine is a fantastic celebration of pupils’ achievements and progress and an opportunity to reminisce on the events that have taken place. As teachers, we are fortunate to have willing, enthusiastic and inquisitive pupils that make our job so enjoyable. I do hope that you enjoy reading this year book and that it brings back many happy memories of the past year. My thanks, as ever, for the support and hard work of the whole community for ensuring that Edge Grove is such a happy and special place to be. Best wishes Ben Evans Headmaster

Creative Arts Week with The Pantaloons The year is 1595. The place, Shakespearean London. As the audience gathers for the premier of a new bestselling play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the actors get ready, asking their characters- ‘How do you experience the world around you? How do you react and interact with others? And how do you move around a space? During Creative Arts Week, 422 years later, Edge Grove pupils explored these elements and more with visiting theatre company, The Pantaloons. During workshops combining music and drama, The Pantaloons shared their wisdom and experience through a variety of games and exercises. In these entertaining sessions, pupils were inspired to delve deeper into character portrayal, culminating in small group performances staging the meeting of Oberon and Titania. Meanwhile, outside these workshops, the entire school embarked on a cross curricular project incorporating the themes of Shakespeare and Elizabethan England.

18

In English there was work on poetry and Shakespearean insults whilst Maths looked at Roman numerals and created fantastic parabola letters to spell Shakespeare A Midsummer Night’s Dream. There was Shakespearean rapping in Music, philosophical debates about science vs magic, and leaf and flower making in Art as pupils learnt to pour paint. The year groups came together and watched The Pantaloons project this theory onto the stage in their touring production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. With only five actors to cover all the roles, The Pantaloons used humour and clever physical signals to demonstrate and portray the different characters, creating an imaginative and whimsical performance. Five very busy and inspiring days, Creative Arts Week provided a cohesive and enthusiastic start to the new school year, and inspired teachers and pupils alike for the term ahead.

Swimming Gala On Monday afternoon we took a big squad of 44 swimmers across to Beechwood Park to swim against them for the first time. We have never swum in a gala in the Autumn term so it was with great excitement that we set off. It was fabulous to see so many pupils representing the school in one gala and there were some excellent, close races. The noise level inside the pool area was testament to the closeness and excitement of each event!!! Although Beechwood Park ran out winners of this gala, we had a number of excellent wins and some good individual and relay performances. Well done to all involved and we look forward to making this an annual event.

Year 6 trip to Kew Gardens The trip to Kew was interesting and we learnt a ton of things there; such as that ferns are not flowering plants and that non-flowering plants came before flowering plants. We also learnt that grass has flowers on it and is wind-pollinated. The landscape was beautiful and neat allowing us a perfect view of the parts of different types of plants such as the stigma and carpel. Everybody was super friendly and explained to us things like the different types of bee and all of us had a great time (me especially for testing Mrs Lewis on aeroplanes!) and it was amazing how much science there was to learn. There was a certain part of Kew Gardens that I found quite interesting, The Hive. The Hive was a giant metal structure that resembled a hive. When you went inside, the view was incredible! But below the hive were these tubes that played a documentary. This documentary was impossible to hear with just the naked ear, so to listen to it, you had to take a wooden lollipop stick, put one end of the stick into your mouth and then insert the other end of the stick into a certain input in the metal tube and when you have done this, you surprisingly hear the documentary! But to hear it better, you should cover your ears. The documentary was about bees in a hive

and explained and showed many things such as the signals that the bees communicate with. The sky-high bridge allowed a wonderful and breath-taking view of the sprawling beautiness of the fantastic nature that dwelled on the estate. The time to get there was amazing and all round I couldn’t have wished for a better trip. By Riley, Year 6

Year 3 visit to Chiltern Open Air Museum Year 3 travelled back to the Stone and Iron Ages on Wednesday with a trip to the Chiltern Open Air Museum. The children experienced life in the Mesolithic period (10 000 years ago) by making fires and shelters. They scavenged and cooked parsnips and had the opportunity to make pigment using natural resources. The Iron Age was explored with a fun workshop in a traditional round house where the children made butter, ground wheat to make bread, created clay pots and weaved a basket. A fantastic hands-on learning opportunity which has fuelled their curiosity for this topic.

Sleepover for hurricane relief Almost 40 pupils slept in the Sports Hall armed with nothing but a sleeping bag to raise money for the Hurricane Irma Relief Fund. We also staged a unique ‘evacuation centre experience’ for pupils to show their commitment to raising money for those less fortunate than themselves. Staff volunteered to man the Sports Hall and manage the registration process. We were thrilled to have raised over £1,850 for such a worthy cause.

Year 3 Rocks and Fossils Workshop What a fantastic morning the children had in the Jurassic park amongst ancient ferns and dinosaurs. They were ably led along a path of discovery by Graham, the workshop leader and paleontologist who is passionate about fossils. The children discussed Charles Darwin, fossil locations around the world and fossil time lines. They also found out how rocks are formed - truly fascinating. The children had the opportunity to do observational drawings of a number of interesting fossils. Graham’s final fossil was a whole egg, probably covered in sand during a sandstorm and preserved with a whole dinosaur embryo inside, millions of years ago.

French Speaking competition On Wednesday 1st November four year 4 pupils entered the Junior French Speaking Competition organised by Queen Anne’s School in Caversham. For the competition, the pupils had to select and perform a poem in French which was related to the theme of les numbrés (numbers). As a school, we were allowed one individual entry and one group entry. Our individual entry was Lottie who recited the French children’s rhyme Ma Belle Crèpe. Her performance was admirable, with a wonderful French accent and excellent projection. Lottie was awarded third place in individual category - congratulations! Diya, Foladara and Lucia’s performance of La Poule Qui Compte was delivered with great enthusiasm and again, great French accents. They faced stiff competition and were not awarded a prize, but should be very proud of their achievement. This is the first time that Edge Grove has entered a team for a French Speaking competition, but, having experienced success thanks to Lottie, we will certainly be returning to the competition next academic year. All four girls showed dedication in learning and rehearsing their poems, but we must also thank Madame Fraissé who helped with our early morning rehearsals. Merci!

FEBRUARY 2018

Downe House Musical Theatre Day A group of year 5 girls went to Downe House to participate in their musical theatre day based on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The girls went to workshops where they looked at the script and developed their acting, were taught songs from the show and choreographed dances. In the afternoon they, together with other schools, performed in front of staff and parents an abridged version of the story. Next term all year 5 will have the opportunity to work with the scenes and music from the story in their drama lessons.

55

FEBRUARY 2018

Year 4 Electricity Workshop with Mr G Tobi “Mr G. came in to talk to the children about electricity. This was a literally hair raising experience for some of the children and they have written mini reports on their best bits. On Monday, we had a whole day of significant science. First we look at renewable and nonrenewable energy and then we made circular circuits.” Monty “When Mr G. came, my favourite thing was the battery which was powered by fruit and vegetables. I also liked it when he taught about the magnet and there was electricity shooting out. It was really cool when the Van der Graaf machine was blowing the foil tins into the air and when the doll’s hair went spiky.” Emily “On Monday, we had a Mr G. science workshop. We used a Van der Graaf machine that was making 200,000 volts! We also rubbed balloons on my head and it created static electricity which we used to move water and a pepperami!”

56

Jesse “Monday was fantastic because we got to make a spinner using a screw, a battery and a magnet! We also got to make a lightbulb light up using only fruit!” Jemima “On Monday we had a day of pure science with Mr G. It was the best first day of term ever! Mr G. brought in some amazing inventions which used static electricity. The Van der Graaf machine creates static energy using a rubber belt - it makes your hair stand on end! I loved the Mr G. workshop and I would definitely recommend him for other schools.”

FEBRUARY 2018

Year 3 materials workshop with Mr G Year 3 were treated to a superb visit from Mr G and an exciting materials and magnets workshop. The children investigated how to use magnets to make objects float, electromagnets and even got to make their own magnetic flubber! It is certainly amazing what you might find if you crushed up your cereal in the morning.

Edge Grove Park We were thrilled to finally acquire the large area of land which separates the main school and our pitches by the front gates. It took much patience and perseverance but now after over 80 years, the twenty acres of land known as Edge Grove Park are part of the Edge Grove estate once again. This extra space will be well used for an extension to our Forest School provision, to provide a safe path and access to the main playing fields, recreational areas for break times, outdoor learning opportunities and for what we hope will become the Edge Grove rare breeds farm.

Gala Concert in Aid of the Rainbow Centre

The gala concert held on Saturday 17th March was a triumph showcasing Edge Grove’s musical and drama talent. The Sri Lankan theme ran throughout with Edge Grove raising money for its long term international charity – The Rainbow Centre, Sri Lanka. The Sports Hall was transformed, thanks to the artistic direction of Ms Evans and her helpers, with rainbow coloured decorations throughout, creating an atmospheric venue for the many performers. The many musical performances by the children were superb and praise goes to Mr Eglinton who worked tirelessly to bring them together. The drama was superb with Sri Lankan tales and poignant poems about the Tsunami. Mr Kay bravely stepped in last minute for the rock band who lost their lead singer to tonsillitis! Traditional Sri Lankan food came out at the interval served on banana leaves – possibly too spicy for some – but only added to the authentic experience. Ms Evans had also organised a scholarship art auction which generated a great deal of interest. Thanks to all who helped bring this event together and the parents for supporting us. The amazing total of nearly £3,000 raised was going to a fantastic cause and Mrs Baxendale had already ordered invaluable learning toys to take out when she visited in April. 68

Young Writers Publication Ethan’s short story Twice-upon-a-time, in a strange little village, lived a not so little girl called Elizalena.

‘Get out of my class you lanky, long-limbed lobslop!’ he’d yell.

To get there from anywhere, you had to take a right-left turn at Split-turtle-rock, go under Dogs-leap Bridge until you go past yourself at Treetop house.

It wasn’t long before Elizalena had enough of Mr. Fidgetmidgetmagee being so incredopalopously angry, so she hatched a plan!

Elizalena was the tallest nine-year old child you did ever see, so tall in fact, that they had to sew two school skirts together just to reach her knobbly knees!

Every lunchtime, Mr. Fidgetmidgetmagee would take a nap at his desk, Elizalena would sneak into the room, carfully take off his stinkalinkawrinkling socks, and plant his two feet into a flowerpot and add a little water, then, just before the bell would ring, she would yank his feet out and scurry away.

Elizalena went to Hedgerows Hall, a suffablous school, or at least it was until last month. Mr. Fidgetmidgetmagee the scribbling-scrawlingsquashed brother of the Headmasters wife, managed to get a job there teaching mathematics. Only 2ft and four-thirds, he was a horrid critteringcretchen who hated every child that was taller than him. He would set all sorts of impossible questions and ask the children their 18 times-tables, and if you got one wrong:

Day by day he grew, and the taller he got, the more pleasant he did become, until one day he was even taller than her! At last, she was free to enjoy school again and lived curiously ever after! Ethan (9)

London Area Regional Athletics Competition On Monday 11th June we travelled with a team of 14 pupils to the London Area athletics meeting at Thames Valley Athletics Centre. This is a major event attended by 39 different schools with hundreds of pupils attempting to qualify for the National Athletics finals. In order to qualify pupils had to either win their event or finish second and still reach the very tough qualifying standards. The competition started better than any of us could have wished for with our U14 boys relay team of Jimi J, Jimi A, Femi and Sylvan winning the 4 x 100m relay. The day just got better and better from then on with Jimi J excelling by winning both his events, the 100m and long jump to qualify for three events at the National finals. Dion won the U14 shot put and Lauren the U12 shot put. On the track Maddie, Oluwaleke, Lewis and Tio got through to their respective finals. Tio finished second in the 200m final and qualified for the National finals as did Femi in the 300m. Ebunlola finished second in both the 100m and 200m and qualified for the National finals in both events. Special mention goes to Lewis who won the U11 long jump. Unfortunately the National finals are only for U12 to U14 pupils. The pupils exceeded all our expectations with 8 pupils qualifying for the National finals across 9 different events. Well done to all the pupils involved and Good luck in Birmingham!!

U12 Aldenham Cricket Festival The U12 Cricket team enjoyed their time at Aldenham School on Friday and represented the school brilliantly in the U12 Aldenham cricket festival. In the three group matches we played against some very difficult oppositions losing the first match with three balls to spare, and losing the second despite nearly chasing down a mammoth 103 in just ten overs. In the final group stage we played Davenies and with one over to go they required just two runs. Buster then bowled a stunning over taking three wickets for no runs to claim a victory. In the trophy final against Aldenham, Edge Grove bowled first and restricted the opposition to just 48 runs. Edge Grove managed to score 49 in just 7 overs. A brilliant day was had by all the players and they represented the school both on and off the field in excellent fashion.

Inter-House Swimming Gala We had three extremely hot but very enjoyable galas with some great swimming on display. Stratton dominated the Middle School gala and Gills winning the Lower School gala. With Hedgerows winning the Upper School gala, it was all up for grabs. After all the points were added together it was Churchills who ran out the overall winners. Proving that consistency is the key in House events. Well done to all the boys and girls who compete for showing great effort, team work and sportsmanship. LIFE AFTER THE EDGE

Alumni Events at Edge Grove Edge Grove Society Golf Day Old Boys and past parents met for the Edge Grove Society Golf day on September 13th at Porters Park Golf club in Radlett. This year we had four teams from a range of cohorts from 1955 to 2006 all playing together.

142

Old Boy and Porter Park member Martin Jeens (1956) joined forces with Sean Gorman and Henry Schreier (1996) and Andrew Robson (1976) giving a fabulous running commentary and history of the course to his team mates whilst walking the undulating course.

Ben Evans joined the teams for dinner and the presentation. Old school photos and diaries were reminisced over and we all agreed that we would do it again next year and try to each put a team out to make it bigger and better.
