Happy Easter to all our readers and welcome to our Spring edition of East Kent Lifestyle. Looks like we’re finally done with winter and can look forward to the lighter nights, better weather, and more chances to enjoy everything that we’ve got to offer in glorious East Kent! Our travel editor, Jaillan Yehia has been busy this issue. Whitefriars’ next top models revealed
Whitefriars Marketing Manager Julie Holness says: “This was a great opportunity for local aspiring models to participate in a professional fashion event. It gave participants valuable modelling experience and exposure without them feeling intimidated by a live show and audience. The resulting images of our retailers’ spring/ summer fashions have also been used to create a style guide which is available for free download from the Whitefriars website (www.whitefriars.co.uk). They will also be displayed on vertical banners throughout the shopping centre over the spring period.” Winning models received a set of professional digital photos, a video of the show and some Whitefriars goodies, including a £50 shopping voucher.
Whitefriars recruited ten local amateur models for their Spring Fashion Show which is now being displayed on digital screens across the Canterbury shopping centre as well as online. Entrants aged 5 and over were invited to send in a recent photo to be judged by a team of retail marketing experts. Over 100 entries were received and judges had a hard time choosing overall winners to appear in the show, which was filmed at The Marlowe Theatre Studio in Canterbury on 4 March.

Beast From The East Covers Ramsgate Beach in Dead Starfish Tens of thousands of dead starfish were washed up on a British beach in the wake of the Beast from the East and Storm Emma. Wildlife enthusiast Lara Maiklem, who captured photos of the staggering scene in Ramsgate said it was 'like the armageddon'. The 47-year-old said it looked like 'hundreds of thousands' of starfish and other sea life were washed ashore this weekend following the spell of sub-zero temperatures. Ms Maiklem was visiting the beach with her five-year-old twins, Edie and Beau, when they stumbled upon the masses of dead invertebrates. In a bizarre twist, visitors on the beach also discovered a pair of false teeth among the mass of dead wildlife. She said: 'It was incredible. There were starfish as far as the eye could see, there were fish in there and sea urchins. 'I had heard about the starfish so I went down. There were quite a lot of people. I think they were first swept up yesterday and somebody told me they were there. I have 12
never seen anything like that before.'Ms Maiklem, who is currently working on a book documenting her activities, said the starfish stretched from Ramsgate to neighbouring beaches in Broadstairs. Ms Maiklem added: 'The beast killed quite a lot of creatures. We saved as many as we could but it was like the armageddon.'

Orbital to headline huge show at Dreamland Margate

Herne Bay Tot Named Baby Of The Year In Photo Competition
Dreamland Margate have announced that the groundbreaking British dance duo Orbital will play its outdoor Scenic Stage. The creators of classic electronic symphonies, timeless dancefloor songs and originators of live dance music are set to bring their must-see ecstatic festival experience to the Margate amusement park on July 28th. Orbital will be the first music act to headline their own show on the Scenic Stage outside of the park’s hugely successful Sunset Sessions in 2017 – which are returning this year from May 4th. They will bring their acclaimed Orbital live show to Margate for the very first time. The show has been described by The Guardian and Q Magazine as among the greatest gigs of all time. Rebecca Ellis, Senior Creative Producer at Dreamland Margate said: “2018 will see us unveil a vast line-up of music at Dreamland and we are thrilled to have Orbital playing at the park. Being such an iconic festival act, they’re a perfect fit for Dreamland’s festival feel – it’s going to be really special!” Tickets for Orbital are priced between £10 - £30 and are on sale now via dreamland.co.uk. Little Jesse Mackeylier has snapped up a huge prize after being named Baby of the Year in a national photography competition. The tot’s image, showcasing his cheeky expression as he peeks out from under a floppy hat, was captured by Herne Bay’s Style Photography and was picked as one of 60 finalists in the Tembo Baby of the Year contest. A panel of professional photographers scored the finalists and their marks were combined with those of a panel of mums as well as a panel of the competition’s sponsors. They were then added to points based on the number of Facebook likes each photo received. Jesse’s image was placed first by photographers and second by mums, earning him the highest number of points and the top prize of £5,000. Photographer Doug Brown, who runs Style Photography in Herne Bay High Street with partner Sheila Mann, said they were delighted for Jesse and his parents. He said: “Baby photography may look easy but actually it is one of the hardest disciplines to get right – and one of the most rewarding when you do. “We were so pleased to hear he had won, and particularly proud that the image was placed first by photographers who value not only the fantastic end result but also the skill and experience needed to create it.” Doug was also named MPA UK Creative Portrait Photographer of the Year for 2017 and received the Judges’ Choice Award for his entry. Jesse and his parents will receive their prize at The Baby Show 2018 at The NEC in Birmingham in May. 13

EXPLORING THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF THE NORTH DOWNS
Explore this picturesque section of the North Downs Way packed full of countryside delights – Breath-taking views, rolling countryside and wildlife. Setting off from the delightful Kentish village of Adisham, you will walk through East Kent, a former coal mining area, enjoying the peaceful woodlands and amazing views over Barham Downs.
This much-loved section of the North Downs Way is a definite must do especially as 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of the North Downs Way. Following little used footpaths and bridleways, you’ll pass through interesting woodlands and may even catch a glimpse of the coast at certain points of your walk! This walk is the perfect reason to board a train and head straight to the village. The walk starts at the small and attractive station. Making your way through the village you will 16
notice the delightful primary school and the Holy Innocents Church, with its 13th century tower, as you pass by, it is worth having a look inside to delve into some of Adisham’s history. Just after the village hall, you will pass through a gate into a field where you will head out of the village into the rolling countryside of the North Downs Way. Follow the broad track into woodland called Twelve Acre Shaw. Look for the signs of spring in the woodland – newly budding leaves, perhaps some primroses or the odd
bluebell. There is nothing to beat the spring freshness of a woodland, where nature is slowly awakening from its long winter hibernation. Emerge from the woodland and follow the field edge into Woodlands Road before heading along a bridleway and past another ribbon of woodland. You’ll follow the bridleway for some time taking in outstanding views across the grounds of Woodland Manor which you will pass on your right. Woodland Manor is a Grade II listed building, take a moment to

Continue forwards until the point where the North Downs Way crosses the path. Pause for a while to reflect on the 40th anniversary of this iconic trail which

Turn left onto a further bridleway passing nearby Ileden Wood. The land you walk on forms the edge of the old coal mining area of East Kent. Kent has a rich coal mining history which you can learn more about from the display at Dover Museum, it’s a great way to expand your knowledge of the fabulous industry that once existed in Kent. Follow a wide track through Ileden Wood before passing through a wide gate and continuing past Well Wood. Now is your time to catch that glimpse of the stunning Kent coastline through the trees, you can also catch some great views of Richborough Power Station too!

After exploring the village, and perhaps finding the perfect spot to enjoy your picnic, its time to head back. You may leave inspired enough to complete the full North Downs Way route or maybe to try another fulfilling section of this much-loved route. RAMSGATE TO HOST PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL
FREESTYLE KITESURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS Ramsgate has been put firmly on the map as one of the UK’s top kitesurfing destinations, with the announcement that it will host the final leg of the 2018 National Freestyle Kitesurfing Championships.

Following a glowing endorsement from record breaking kitesurfing champion Lewis Crathern, who broke the British record for the highest jump on Ramsgate Main Sands in November 2016, representatives from Active Ramsgate successfully concluded talks with the British Kitesports Association (BKA) to become one of just 4 destinations to host this year’s championship.
The final leg of the championships will take place on 18th and 19th August on Ramsgate Main Sands and around 70 competitors from all over the UK will all be competing for the title of National Freestyle Kitesurfing Champion.
The team at Active Ramsgate wants to encourage local residents to engage with them too with plenty of outdoor activities for everyone to get involved with throughout the year. It’s a great opportunity for local businesses to capitalise on the championships.

Andy Gratwick, MD of the British Kitesports Association said: “The Championships are growing, and we’re delighted to be taking it to a new venue this year. Ramsgate Sands is a perfect destination for kitesurfers and we want to encourage as many people to visit and try it out for themselves! It’s where records have been broken in the past, so we know we’re going to be in for a good competition!”
Active Ramsgate, an initiative of Ramsgate Town Council, is designed to support economic development in the town by promoting the Ramsgate area to visitors and local residents through an inspiring range of outdoor activities. The team at Active Ramsgate are delighted to not only be hosting the thrilling final leg of the championships, but to be a headline sponsor of the whole event across all 4 championship destinations – Skegness, Hayling Island, Westward Ho!, and Ramsgate.
There are also other exciting events planned for the year, details of which will be released on the Active Ramsgate website, including free kitesurfing taster sessions for children and a tour of local schools by the British Kitesurfing Association. MAY DAY FESTIVAL AT HEVER CASTLE
Celebrate May Day at Hever Castle & Gardens over the early May Bank Holiday. The May Day Festival runs from 5th to 7th May with a host of customs and activities for all the family to enjoy. Join the Lord and Lady of the May on the Castle Forecourt and see the crowning of the May Queen. Visitors are invited to dance around the Maypole with brightly coloured ribbons intertwined. This age old custom is followed by demonstrations of May Day Dancing accompanied by 16th century music and a playlet about the traditional story of the battle of the seasons. Meet the mythical Jack-in-the-Green and follow the Green Man from folklore in a traditonal May Day procession through the gardens as he wakes up the plants for summer with the help of children and their magical May bells (2.30pm). There’s also a Green Man trail through the Castle and children can have their face painted* (*additional charge). At this time of year the award winning gardens and grounds are a feast for the 20
eyes, with delicate blossom of pear, apple and cherry trees to lift the spirits. Stroll through the Pergola Walk where the walls are bedecked with an array of Wisteria and admire the colourful bedding plants in the Italian Gardens. Visitors aged 7-14 can explore the new Tudor Towers adventure playground with its own moat, drawbridge and three turrets. It features three slides and two poles and lots of interactive elements including musical instruments, a roof maze and hidden boxes to find. With the days getting warmer, adventurous children can risk a soaking as they navigate the Water Maze while more fun awaits in the Yew Maze – how long will it take you to find your way out? CYCLING THROUGH RIVERSIDE TRANQUILLITY
Leaving the hustle and bustle of Canterbury behind, set off along the banks of the River Stour on a wonderful cycle ride to Chartham. The peaceful riverbank is home to river wildlife and a tranquil landscape of marshes and meadows. Why not bring your bike on the train to Canterbury and cycle along this beautiful route, stopping for lunch in Chartham at the Artichoke, a traditional beamed pub serving delicious home cooked food, before cycling back along the trail which begins and ends in Westgate Parks, a peaceful escape minutes away from the centre of Canterbury. For some the Great Stour Way serves as a cycling commute into Canterbury, whilst for others it forms a perfect weekend day out cycling alongside the 22
peaceful river, perhaps after a spot of shopping or to take in a delicious pub meal at the half way stop. Whatever your reason, the Great Stour Way promises a peaceful escape whether you’re cycling solo or as a family. Heading from Canterbury, you will follow the beautiful and tranquil riverbank of the Stour, cycling through heritage sites including the Chartham paper mill which has nearly 300 years of history in the local area. There is an archive available at the mill containing photographs and testimonies of mill
workers, many of whom had a long association with the site. The mill, which is still operational today, was formerly owned by the Weatherly family, later by William Howard and son and later still by the Cremer family. It was brought by Wiggins Teape in the 1930’s and now produces a full range of translucent papers. Stop to admire Milton Manor Church, a delightful 12th century building. It contains a small aisle and chancel, and is little more than a chapel which is exactly what is was used for throughout the middle ages when it was part of the nearby manor. A small stone pinnacle at the West end houses a single bell. The church has changed very little over the centuries and is now only used occasionally in summer months.
[days out ] There are plenty of places to dismount your bike along the route to admire the wildlife on the river. Kingfishers are commonly spotted along the route as well as a whole range of spring wildlife awaking from their winter hibernation. Look out for the elusive water vole, lapwings, the distinctive Great Crested Grebe and maybe a dragonfly or two! You could even stop off for a spring picnic and enjoy a blast of fresh air at the wonderfully carved picnic bench that you will find by the old Elham Valley Railway embankment. The carvings are of river wildlife that can be spotted on this stretch of the river, how many have you spotted today? The Elham Valley Railway line used to provide a popular service to and from Canterbury to both passengers and freight. It operated until 1947, when it finally closed after offering a freight only service in its final years of operation. You’ll pass over several cattle grids during your ride, you might spot livestock which are kept in the meadows found along the route. Here, people and animals can both enjoy the pleasant environment of the riverside, on this multi user route which can also be enjoyed by walkers too. As you head into Chartham, look for the stunning views of both the Stour
Valley and the Kent Downs. The path, forming part of National Cycle Route 18, is a gateway to both of these picturesque landscapes. Chartham itself is very pretty, the river passes through the heart of the village which supports an active industry of arable farming as well as the famous paper mill. St Mary’s Church is found in the village green with a network of tiny streets intertwining through the village. The Artichoke pub nestles near to the riverside and offers a warm welcome to both walkers and cyclists. It serves a range of locally produced beers and ales alongside a good range of home cooked food. The traditional bar area is beamed with a wonderful open fire which is lit during cooler months. It’s a great place to stop for lunch before continuing your cycle ride.

NEW £1M SPA OPENS IN EAST KENT BY JEFF SIMS
The Waterfront Spa & Health Club has opened at the Best Western Plus Dover Marina Hotel – and Ben Cohen MBE, one of the heroes of England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup triumph, was on hand to cut the ribbon. Cohen – who won a legion of new admirers when he appeared on BBC TV’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2013 – joined a host of VIP guests to toast the launch of the luxurious new spa and also the unveiling of four new suites, including a stunning bridal suite. Another special guest at the opening ceremony was popular Indian singer Vijay Prakash, who is one of the artists credited for the Academy Awardwinning song ‘Jai Ho’, which featured in the hit movie Slumdog Millionaire. Vijay delighted guests by performing an impromptu song at the spa opening. The 85-bedroom hotel, a grade IIlisted Regency crescent terrace with an enviable beach-front location overlooking the harbour with views across the English Channel to France, is now home to one of the most luxurious boutique spas in the region. More than £1m has been invested to create seven beautifully appointed treatment rooms, new sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi, a bigger and more luxurious relaxation area, changing rooms and showers. Extended opening hours are also offered for the convenience of clients. During the champagne unveiling, 24
therapists demonstrated the Ayurveda treatments available at the spa, which are designed to promote mental and physical wellness. Award-winning ELEMIS products and treatments are on offer for the first time at The Waterfront and consultants from ELEMIS attended to provide guests with more information and to demonstrate the premium range of products now available there. Improvements to the gym include new state-of-the-art Technofit equipment, while personal trainers are on hand to assist guests and run fitness classes. Managing Director Mr Kanagaratnam Rajaseelan said: “Everyone who has been involved in this exciting project deserves huge credit. It has been a labour of love and we are delighted with the results. The hotel’s position on the seafront is fabulous while the spa and health club offer facilities which are second to none. I can’t wait to return!” he told guests before cutting the ceremonial ribbon. In addition to the new spa, the hotel has also created four luxurious new suites after acquiring an adjoining part of the terraced building. FESTIVAL OF THE BRAIN! Folkestone Quarterhouse have teamed up once again with arts and literature organisation Living Words, and Folkestone Fringe to bring you the fourth annual Normal? DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM A KENTISH ART RETREAT BY JAILLAN YEHIA
The last time I wrote about going on a retreat, I began by talking about crying in a yoga class on a beach in Mexico. At the risk of making it seem like all retreats involve crying, I’m going to start this review of an art retreat right here in Kent by telling you about the tears. But only because there’s a powerful lesson you can learn from somebody else’s eyes leaking. It’s a chilly Friday evening and a small group of strangers have arrived at a picture-perfect farm set amidst 12,000 acres of ancient woodland in rural Shadoxhurst, ready for a weekend of art, yoga and relaxation. We’ve all had a chance to check into our accommodation - a higgledypiggledy bunch of beautiful bedrooms with original beams and old fashioned fixtures spread across the main house and the beautifully renovated 28
outbuildings. Now we’re all ready to unleash our inner artist. We are seated at large wooden desks in an echoey modern barn, heads bent in concentration. We have a selection of natural objects spread out in front of us which we’re encouraged to sketch by Catherine Farr, who will be our artistic mentor for the next few days. Most of us don’t have any kind of background in art. In fact, in a flurry of typical Britishness we all loudly proclaim just how bad we are at drawing before we have even introduced ourselves, and we compete valiantly for the title of Least Capable Artist as if it comes with a cash prize. I feel sure that being a mostly female group has something to do with the
self-effacing atmosphere, but then I realise the guys are at it too - it’s clear we’re actively attempting to lower Catherine’s expectations so that when we do draw something rubbish, she can’t say she wasn’t warned. What we’re not prepared for is Catherine’s complete lack of pretension, her straight talking nature, and ability to turn your preconceptions about art and indeed art retreats - around. A couple of people on the retreat turn out to be fairly practiced artists (the weekend is a Christmas gift from their partner or an excuse to get together with another arty friend) and at first it creates a bit of a ‘them’ and ‘us’ vibe, as we begin our first proper drawing exercises.

This is when the tears of frustration come in. One of the girls in the ‘we can’t really draw’ gang, of which I consider myself a key member, has a bit of a moment. She’s trying to sketch a shell, or a pine cone, or some other deceptively simple everyday item whose lines are harder to nail down than a slab of jelly in the wind, and she feels like she just can’t do it. It’s all over in a flash, I hear a few of Catherine’s words of encouragement, a general tone of comfort, and an overriding message: Each and every one of us has our own unique artistic style, not to be measured or compared against anyone else’s and beautiful in its own way. It is this message which turns out to be the key take-home of the entire weekend for me. This and an A5 sheet of paper with a charcoal seashell in a style that I will describe charitably as ‘art naive’ - but of which I am immensely proud nonetheless.
After Friday’s initial session we have a further three art classes on the Saturday and Sunday, each 2 hours long, punctuated by organic vegan meals, walks, morning yoga, petting the farm’s dogs - and sheep and optional spa sessions. During those hours spent in the studio I discover that I do indeed have my own style, and I watch others’ styles develop. It might sound trite but the variation of what different humans can produce when confronted with exactly the same view and some pencils is remarkable, and endlessly inspiring. I feel the atmosphere change ever so slowly as we morph from a shy group of somewhat stiff strangers, most of whom are convinced of their artistic shortcomings, to a more bonded group of mutually appreciative budding painters and sketchers. The sensation of time passing in this atmosphere of relaxed concentration is quite unique, almost like a meditation, and your troubles, worries and the events of any life that exists outside of the object on which you’re focused simply melt away.
It turns out to be inspiring and inclusive to have different styles and abilities in the room - even the interlopers who are borderline professional and have talents which scared us at the start - as we all begin to tackle different mediums like watercolour and oil pastels. We settle into the rhythm of really looking at things, then silently working, glancing up constantly at our sources, with Catherine guiding our artistic choices in a down-to-earth yet delicate manner. We wrap up the weekend with a show and tell session, enthusiastically discussing what we have learned and commenting on each other’s pieces, all bolstered by positive feedback and a sense of genuine accomplishment. Everyone’s work, from the teary new artist, to the keen amateurs and the practiced painters is spread out around the room in a mini exhibition – and every piece gives the group equal amounts of joy. HOW TO CLEAN WALLPAPER EXPERT TOP TIPS

Sticky fingerprints, scuff marks and even crayon are just some of the ways that wallpaper can become dirty. But the good news is that most wallpaper can be easily cleaned without damaging it. Follow Alex Whitecroft, Head of Design at I Want Wallpaper 1. Pick washable wallpaper You can find out how washable a wallpaper is on most wallpaper websites in the ‘product summary’ section or on the packaging. Look out for vinyl/ acrylic covered wallpaper as this can be scrubbed with mild detergents. If you think you will need a paper that can be washed, maybe avoid a plain-paper wallpaper which aren’t as hard-wearing. 2. Dust or vacuum the walls A weekly going over with the duster will keep walls looking fresh and limit the accumulation of cobwebs and ‘dust bunnies’ (fluffy clumps of dust particles) that tend to gather on walls. Use a feather duster with a long handle or alternatively vacuum with the cleaner attachment for hard to reach areas. Try not to press on the wall with the vacuum extension so as not to leave a mark or transfer dirt. 30
Always vac or dust the walls prior to washing them. 3. Get everything you need ready before starting to clean Tool up with the following items before beginning: •L adder (free standing is best so as not to damage wallpaper when leaning it against the wall) • Hoover/duster •P lastic/cloth sheet (Line the floor and nearby furniture with a large sheet (preferably plastic), in case of drips, dust or spillages) • S oft brush •B ucket of clean water
• Bucket of water with mild detergent • Plain, clean sponge • Clean cloth • Small towel 4. Do a patch test Find a discreet spot and test the cleaning solution to avoid costly damage. 5. Be sparing Too much detergent can actually attract dirt and leave stains. Similarly, too much water can damage the paper and leave water marks. Dip the sponge in the soapy water and wring out excess moisture until the sponge is just slightly damp.

WALLPAPER HACKS FOR HARD TO SHIFT STAINS SCUFFS
6. Be methodical Start at the top left corner and wipe the wall with soapy water using gentle downward motions being careful to avoid loosening or ripping conjoining edges. After cleaning a strip, use the bucket filled with clean water (and the fresh cloth) to remove excess soap. Clean from top to bottom (to avoid drips) and work across the wall from left to right. Rinse the sponges and change the water regularly, so as not to just move dirt around. 7. Towel dry
There are a number of methods for using scuff marks – an eraser being one of the most effective. Baking soda/water can also be used but is slightly abrasive so always test it first. GREASE
Talcum powder can absorb grease stains on non-vinyl wallpaper (simply apply and leave for five mins then brush away)
Dry each section with a towel as you go. Using a towel will gently absorb any leftover moisture and limit the risk of water marks.
Alternatively, a low-heat iron applied over paper towels should soak up the stain.
8. Be gentle
FOOD
Avoid bleach or harsh cleaning solutions. Similarly, abrasive products like hard-bristle brushes may be too coarse for this job. Gentle downward motions will be effective enough to clean off the majority of dirt/stains.
Gently scrape away food that has stuck to the wallpaper. For more
persistent stains, gently rub with a toothbrush dipped in detergent. CRAYON
Scrape away crayon with a blunt knife. Use the iron and paper towel technique to lift more stubborn marks. INK
Baby wipes should remove the ink from washable markers Gently rub baking soda and water onto nonwashable ink. Rubbing alcohol or silver polish can be used on very durable wallpapers. FINGERPRINTS
An eraser should rub the stain away with minimal pressure.

BETTER TOGETHER East Kent Leading the way in Mental Health Care A pledge to provide all day psychiatric help in hospitals throughout Kent and Medway by March 2019 was made by Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust’s Chief Executive, Helen Greatorex, and endorsed by Kent and Medway Sustainability and Transformation Partnership’s Chief Executive, Glenn Douglas, during a conversation about making improvements in mental health, involving over 300 people, which took place this March in Maidstone. Currently 24-hour ‘liaison psychiatry’ services (providing expert psychiatric help alongside physical health services) are provided at Medway Maritime Hospital and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Thanet with development in hospitals in west Kent soon to follow. NHS England has set a 2021 deadline for this service to be provided in general acute hospitals across the country, which is called ‘Core 24’. However, Kent and Medway could now be way ahead of other regions throughout England, pledging to go further and faster on making sure this service is in place. In her closing address, Helen Greatorex said: “We need to step up the ambition as the people we serve deserve so much better. So we commit today to taking some bold steps to having a 24/7 liaison psychiatry service across all of our Accident and Emergency Departments in Kent and Medway.” Glenn Douglas added: “I endorse this approach. We’ve got to do things differently as we continue to strive to 40
give the best service for our patients, making sure we meet their mental health as well as their physical health needs. I commit, and I know Helen commits, to doing that. So, in 12 months’ time we want all of our A&E’s to have that service.” The conversation, which took the form of an all-day conference with delegates who currently deliver and use mental health services in Kent and Medway, and other health and care partners, covered a range of topics including social isolation and loneliness, children and young people’s mental health, perinatal, mother and baby care as well as suicide prevention, local care and crisis and liaison psychiatry. Claire Murdoch, National Mental Health Director for NHS England and Tim Kendall, National Clinical Mental Health Director for NHS England took time out of their busy schedules to give delegates an overview of the national situation and their view of the immediate priorities for regions planning and delivering health and social care services across the country The event also included high profile speakers such as Jonny Benjamin MBE, an award-winning mental health campaigner whose global campaign to find the ‘silent hero’ who saved his life attracted international media coverage. Jonny’s inspirational talk about his childhood, mental ill health and subsequent campaigning received a standing ovation. Mum and Mother and Infant Mental Health Service user, Zoe Gibson, gave a powerful account
of her perinatal mental ill health in pregnancy and her involvement in KMPT’s new Mother and Baby Unit. A marketplace featured a range of organisations from public and third sector partners, such as Rethink Mental Health; Blackthorn Trust, Age UK, Kent County Council ‘Release the Pressure’ and Sheppey Oasis Academy. Delegates included representation from NHS trusts throughout Kent and Medway and beyond, service users, carers, the police, schools, colleges and universities and representation from local and regional councils.

Walter Bruce Willis was born into a military family in Idar-Oberstein, West Germany in 1955. His father, David Willis, an American soldier, was stationed at the Strasbourg army barracks at the time. After being discharged in 1957, David Willis moved his German wife, Marlene, and their four children to Carney’s Point, New Jersey, taking up the kinds of blue-collar jobs which would later become a hallmark of his eldest son’s film roles. Despite his popularity at high school, a young Bruce Willis encountered difficulties with public speaking due to a stutter. A keen interest in the performing arts would provide a breakthrough when, during a performance of Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Willis found that he would stop stuttering when on stage. Willis has often spoken publicly about overcoming this difficulty over the course of his life. "The hardest thing I remember was being a kid stuttering. My advice to the people in this room is to never let anyone make you feel like an outcast, because you will never be an outcast," he told the Hollywood Reporter at the American Institute for Stuttering’s 2016 gala, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” 44
Leaving Montclair State University in his junior year to pursue an acting career, Willis moved to New York City. Like many aspiring actors before him, he supported himself with bartending, striking up a friendship with John Goodman while working at a bar frequented by actors and musicians on the Upper West Side. “Bruce was the best bartender in New York,” Goodman told the New York Post, reminiscing about his co-star while promoting their 2017 film Once Upon a Time in Venice, “He kept an entire joint entertained all night. He just kept the show going. He was amazing.” That charisma would soon grab the attention of television writer Glenn Gordon Caron when Willis was cast in his show Moonlighting (1985), a comedy drama revolving around two unlikely partners at a detective agency. A virtual unknown when he showed up to the audition in military fatigues and a punk haircut,Willis got the part of wisecracking private investigator David Addison at the urging of his co-star, former model Cybill Shepard. Despite reluctance at his casting from the producers at ABC, their on-screen chemistry proved popular with viewers, and the show launched Willis into the public eye.
While still working on Moonlighting, Willis became the latest in a long line of actors being considered for the leading role in an upcoming action film, Die Hard adapted from Roderick Thorp’s 1979 detective thriller novel Nothing Lasts Forever. Die Hard director John McTiernan had already offered the script to a string of notable 80’s action stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, who all turned it down. Despite only having appeared on the big screen in two moderately successful films, the backing of producer Larry Gordon and audience demographic data persuaded the studio to hire Willis. The story of a lone cop in the wrong place at the wrong time went on to be a huge hit and kicked off one of Hollywood’s biggest action franchises, making Willis an overnight action star. He earned five million dollars for his appearance in the film, an unheard-of amount at the time for a lesser known actor, as he once told Entertainment Weekly: “Five million dollars. It was an enormous amount of money at the time. And I was a TV actor! The day after I signed the deal, every actor in Hollywood’s salary went up to $5 million. It was nothing more than the
[feature ] fact that a film I’d done, Blind Date, had a good opening. A good opening weekend in those days was $7 million. Now, if it doesn’t make $100 million it’s a failure.” Despite this strong start to his movie career, Willis found his success waning towards the start of the nineties with a string of commercial flops, most notably 1991’s Hudson Hawk, which he also wrote, being panned by critics. He did however see some moderate success in the music industry, with his blues album, The Return of Bruno and a UK Top 40 hit with a cover of the Drifter’s Under the Boardwalk. Willis’ career received a much-needed boost in 1994 with a supporting role in Quentin Tarantino’s comeback vehicle Pulp Fiction, his performance catching the eye of director Terry Gilliam, who gave him the lead in his noir hit 12 Monkeys (1995), kicking off a string of science fiction success for Willis who went on to star in Luc Besson’s cult classic The Fifth Element (1997) and Michael Bay’s apocalyptic disaster movie Armageddon, the highest-grossing film of 1998. Undertaking a quieter role as child psychologist Malcolm Crowe in award winning supernatural horror The Sixth Sense (1999), Willis formed a close friendship with director M. Night Shyamalan. “I admire his work.” He told Rolling Stone in a 2000 interview, where he discussed his own reaction to the famous twist ending. “When I read the script, I was completely fooled in the same way the audience was when they saw the film. No one, not even Night, believed we would be able to fool the audience the way we did. Generally, when there's a surprise ending like that, people go out and tell their friends what happens. But for some reason, they didn't. It was phenomenal." Willis reunited with Shyamalan for his deconstructed superhero thriller Unbreakable (2000), and surprised audiences with a cameo as his character David Dunn at the end of Shyamalan’s 2016 film Split, revealing it to be a standalone sequel to Unbreakable. The final entry in the planned trilogy, Glass, is currently in production.
After starring alongside Matthew Perry in The Whole Nine Yards (2000), Willis made his return to television, agreeing to guest star on long-running sitcom Friends. Winning an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance, Willis donated the fee for his appearance to several different charities. In recent years Willis’ long line of action roles have earnt him a spot in the Sylvester Stallone spearheaded ensemble franchise The Expendables, which features some of the biggest stars of action blockbusters as a group of elite mercenaries. A sixth entry and possible prequel to the Die Hard franchise is rumoured to be in the works under the working title of Die Hard:Year
One. Outside of his movie career, Willis made his Broadway debut as tortured author Paul Sheldon in an adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery in 2015. Willis lives with his wife, model Emma Hemming and their two daughters, Mabel Ray and Evelyn in New York. He has elder three daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah from his first marriage to actress Demi Moore. His latest movie, a remake of seventies vigilante action film Death Wish, is out April 6th. When Canadian born, Texas-raised chef Travis Catfish moved to Kent he decided to recreate the flavours of home by making Tex-Mex food in his own backyard. Here he shares the secrets of good Southern flavours and shows that it’s easier to make Mexican food than you might think.
and the smaller mom’n’pop shops for masa harina, the ground corn flour which is the base for tacos, I turned to the internet.
Short of snagging a table at the latest pop-up restaurant in London, you could end up deeply disappointed if you’re on the hunt for fresh lipsmackingly good Tex-Mex food in the South-East of England.
If you’re serious about starting a Mexican revolution in your own kitchen you can also find a tortilla press online and have it delivered to your door.
After moving to the UK with my British partner I was craving a taste of home, especially a taco dinner consisting of smokey meat, sweet and crispy corn tortillas, tangy queso fresco and citrusy coriander - but I soon realised I’d need to take things into my own hands and get cooking.
Making tortillas is surprisingly easy; you’ll need to use a slightly different ratio of water to flour depending on the colour of the corn, but the process is always the same and once you’ve got a stack of warm fresh tortillas, the rest of the dish is as easy as pie – and a lot of fun to make with your family. The dish is a great gluten free option too.

You can go one of two ways with toppings for your tacos; choose either
refried beans or slaw; both are great fillings for your hand-made corn tortillas. In the winter months I recommend making lovely spiced black turtle beans with onions, garlic and cumin. Cook them low and slow to get them mashable. Leave these beans retaining some texture for the perfect taco topping. In the warmer months, go the slaw route with your own take on coleslaw, perhaps a fresh bright shaved red cabbage simply dressed with some quality white wine vinegar and coriander. Now it’s all about the meat, I favour pork ribs but beef brisket works exceptionally well too. It may be an easy decision to make, as an entire continued overleaf >>

[food and drink ] brisket usually weighs in at seven to eight kilos, and costs around £50. This means it’s best left for your big summer party or a special occasion it’s hard to justify when it’s just for a cosy home dinner. Ribs are more accessible; you can often buy a full rack of ribs for around £10 and they’ll feed two people comfortably. Whichever meat I use, I send it on a nice warm vacation first: to my smoker. When smoking meat there are a few simple but crucial steps to follow. First you need the smoker to
be hot before you load it with meat. The real secret however is basting the meat every half hour to hour with what BBQ pit masters call a mop. A mop is a thin, slightly watered down sauce, which helps keep the meat moist and tasty. Even if you don’t have a smoker, you can still achieve a delicious meat filling for your tacos using your regular oven and then it’s on to dressing up the dish with some extras before devouring it. Try adding some sliced avocado and coriander to finish the dish. I spoon on some nice thick plain yogurt
instead of sour cream in a futile effort to save my waistline, but you can also crumble goats cheese on top if you’re feeling indulgent. Some people love tacos for the textures and flavour combos and I love them for those things too, but also for another reason: the memories of my childhood being raised in Texas. Each bite takes me back to a carefree existence around my family and this dish makes the perfect fun sharing plate for a nostalgic family dinner something I think we all miss from time to time.
TURN YOUR HAND TO TORTILLAS 1. S imply mix warm water and masa harina with a sprinkling of spices of your choice to add flavour. 2. You’ll know the mixture is ready when a semifirm dough forms. I recommend using clean hands to really feel the dough so you get to know when it’s just right. 3. R oll into small size balls (about half the size of a large egg) and press in a tortilla press. Covering the press with cling film or greaseproof paper helps to prevent sticking, as does adding a splash of vegetable oil. 4. K eep pressing each in turn to the desired thickness: I like them super thin, but they can be a little more fragile so start with thicker tortillas to get used to working with the dough. 5. P an fry them until the edges get a little bit crispy. Stack the finished tortillas between two plates to keep them warm.

MAKE YOUR OWN SMOKER When I moved to England from North America I sold everything that wouldn’t fit in a suitcase - so with teary eyes I sold my beloved custom made smoking cabinet. At nearly seven feet tall I could fit about twenty trays of jerky or biltong in that smoker at once. So, after a few months living in England it was very apparent I was missing something in my life and I was again ready to build a smoker.
MEAT THE PERFECT TACO FILLING 1. First find a nice product – you’re looking for meat with some marbling. Don’t be afraid of a bit of fat in your meat whether it’s beef or pork. Remember that for our purposes fat = flavour. 2. Season with whatever spices you fancy, don’t be scared to experiment. HEAD BREWER TO RETIRE AFTER 40 YEARS OF BEER After 40 years in the brewing industry, Shepherd Neame’s head brewer Richard Frost is to retire at the end of the month. Richard joined Britain’s oldest brewer, based in Faversham, Kent, as Master Brewer and Production General Manager in 2012. He was personally approached for the role following a long and successful career which began as a trainee brewer with Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries in 1978. Richard, 60, said: “I studied biology at Nottingham University and went on brewery visits as part of the course which I found really interesting. I wanted to do something practical with my degree, so going into the brewing industry after my studies seemed the perfect choice.” Richard worked in a variety of roles for Wolverhampton and Dudley, including shift brewer, packaging manager and technical services manager, before being promoted to site director of Camerons Brewery in Hartlepool in 1998. He was then appointed head brewer at Banks’s brewery in Wolverhampton in 2003, and remained there for nine years before joining Shepherd Neame. Richard said: “I was ready for a change, and when the opportunity to work for Shepherd Neame arose, I liked the idea of having a more influential role in a smaller business.” During his time with Shepherd Neame, Richard has overseen major expansion
of the beer portfolio, including introducing the popular Whitstable Bay Collection, extending the Spitfire range to include Spitfire Gold and Spitfire Lager, and winning a Gold International Brewing Award for the cask variant of the new Bear Island East Coast Pale Ale. He said: “It is a really good time to be a brewer, as the surge in microbreweries and craft brewers in recent years has prompted consumers to become more knowledgeable and interested in beer.” Richard has managed major projects during his time at Shepherd Neame, such as the introduction of the £3 million water recovery plant in 2013 which allowed the brewery to recycle its waste water and reduce consumption by 40%. He has also dealt with several unexpected incidents during the past six years, including a freak tidal surge which left many parts of the brewery flooded, and a lightning strike which hit one of the tanks and took out the site’s electrics.

But I plan to keep in touch with everyone, and of course I will continue to drink Shepherd Neame beer, to check it is still of the highest quality!” Chief executive Jonathan Neame said: “Richard is well-respected throughout the brewing industry, and has been a huge asset to Shepherd Neame. We would like to thank him for his dedication and hard work during the past six years. He will be greatly missed, but he leaves the brewery in excellent shape for the exciting times ahead.”
He said: “After 40 years in brewing, I know that things will go wrong, but the key is to remain calm and deal with it. Work with your team to sort out the problem and then think about how to stop it happening again.” Richard will be leaving Shepherd Neame on Thursday, March 29. Mike Unsworth has been appointed as his replacement, and will be joining 55

On a clement but blustery early Spring afternoon I headed off to Margate with my partner to sample the delights of Woody’s, one of the town’s charming bijou eateries and bars. Situated on The Parade, a literal stone’s throw from the Margate Sands, Woody’s is a self-styled ‘retro/vintage’ restaurant serving quality freshly prepared fayre to suit all palates.

Woody’s is big enough to create a lively atmosphere when busy, but small enough to feel cosy and inviting when the Margate winds are trying to knock you off your feet (as they were on this particular Friday).
Onto the mains and my partner opted for a simple but classic four cheese pizza. All Woody’s sourdough artisan pizzas are cooked in view of the diner in the their very own brick oven, (imported from Portugal no less) and for the generous portions served they offer decent value at between £9-£12 per pizza depending on your choice.
Inside the décor is best described as ‘quirky’, or perhaps ‘shabby chic’, with some nautical elements, artfully graffiti’d walls, vintage furniture, and fascinating artwork. Whatever the theme, it certainly adds character to the space. The menu offers a decent choice of amazing food. Breakfast is served until 11.30am, after which there is a substantial choice from either the pizza, tapas, or burger menus. Having worked up an appetite on the walk from the other end of town I decided to go for a starter as well as mains and my Asparagus & Parma Ham was spot on. Served on a stylish slate with a balsamic drizzle the asparagus was bright, crisp and clean, and just
Being very much of the carnivorous bent myself I had to try one of Woody’s legendary hand-made burgers. I ordered the ‘Surf & Turf Burger’, a 6oz burger topped with king prawns, mayo tomato in a toasted brioche bum, mushroom and chips. Stacked high and wide this was, to put it mildly, a substantial burger. Mouth-watering and delicious I happily gorged myself on some real, rustic comfort food and enjoyed every mouthful. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert, although there were a selection of tempting homemade pie and cakes on offer. I rounded off my meal with
a splendid local artisan beer while my wife enjoyed a superb freshly ground coffee. With summer on the horizon the tables and chairs will soon offer alfresco dining as Woody’s spills out onto the Piazza. Had we visited a couple of months later I’m sure we’d have been tempted by the wonderful looking tapas, another speciality of Woody’s who offer a wide selection of meat and veggie options, as well as an array of sharing platters. KENT’S ‘BEST CURRY HOUSE’ RAISES MONEY FOR REFUGEES Customers of The Rajdani Indian restaurant in West Kingsdown, near Sevenoaks in Kent, raised £1185 at a special charity lunch on Sunday 15th March.
The restaurant which was named Best Indian Restaurant in the South East at last year’s prestigious Asian Curry Awards, served a selection of its acclaimed dishes, for which 69 regulars paid £15 each. A further £150 was raised through a prize raffle. The proceeds will be divided equally between the St Edmund’s Church in West Kingsdown and Rohingya refugees through Global Aid Trust. Rajdani owner Rob Khan said the lunch was a great success, raising money for two excellent causes. Rohingya people are one of the most persecuted minority groups in the world, according to Khan, who points
to the genocide which has led to over 600,000 refugees to flee their homes in Myanmar, in fear of their lives.
St Edmund’s is the centre of a vibrant Christian community within the village and is involved in many charitable works. “People often say charity should begin at home, which it should – but it should not end here,” said Khan, whose restaurant, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, has long been involved in fund-raising for good causes.

As fashion weeks come and go we are left with the on-going looks and trends. Filtered down to wearable looks this gives us the chance to use our creative side and create new styles. I took my inspiration from Erdem’s fashion week catwalk; by creating finger waves with a sleek low pony it makes the look more wearable. If you’re looking for a Great Gatsby party look this would be a great idea. Obviously it’s not an everyday wearable look but it’s a go-to for anything fancy. To create this look I used Kerastase mousse bouffant on the roots and then combed from the roots down. I then sectioned apart the pony and put that into place followed by layering the mousse on the section where I wanted the finger waves to be. Finally I used a comb and clips to set into place.
The Chair’s Senior stylist Nick Rose has been in the industry for 6 years and has extensive knowledge in all aspects of hair. Nick started his career with an apprenticeship at Sassoon’s, finishing his training at The Chair after moving to Canterbury. Nick’s skills enabled him to progress to the backstage finals at the prestigious L’Oreal Colour Trophy. In 2016 Nick temporarily relocated to an exclusive Mayfair salon to undergo further intense training in designer cutting and creative colouring. An exciting new venture for Kent College Canterbury, as the school opened the doors of its Garden Cottage Nursery.
Nursery Manager, Zen Stedman leads a team of dedicated and highly-qualified staff, and Zen also works closely with Andy Carter, Head Master of Kent College Junior School, as well as the Reception and Early Years teachers in the school. Zen’s passion for early years education shines through in all aspects of the Nursery from the personalized childcare and childcentred approach to the emphasis on parental involvement and choice. Zen has also worked closely with the Head Chef at Kent College to create a healthy bespoke menu of fresh food suitable for the babies and toddlers.
An exciting new venture for Kent College Canterbury, as the school opened the doors of its Garden Cottage Nursery. On a beautiful sunny morning, the first babies and toddlers ever to attend the school were greeted by Nursery Manager Zen Stedman and her team to the welcoming and homely Nursery. Garden Cottage Nursery is situated in the idyllic grounds of Kent College Junior School in Harbledown, just five minutes from the centre of Canterbury. Located in the old lodge that used to form the gatehouse to the estate, the Nursery features a role-play kitchen, a conservatory area used for messy and physical play, and dream coracles and bed mats for the children to take naps as needed. Outside, in the brightly decorated Nursery garden, the young pupils can sit on a comfy grass sofa or play with a wide variety of outdoor learning toys. As one delighted parent remarked: “It’s just like a mini-house!”
For Head Master Andy Carter this is the realisation of a longheld dream to extend the Kent College family to include the youngest age-group. He said: “I am delighted to welcome our youngest ever pupils and their parents to the school – the opening of Garden Cottage Nursery is a really exciting step forward for us. The Nursery building and garden is a wonderful addition to our campus, and I know that Zen and her team will do a fantastic job of looking after and nurturing the babies and toddlers under their care.” The Nursery accommodates up to 12 babies and toddlers at any one time from 6 weeks old to 3 years. Most places, half day or full day are currently reserved but owing to the overwhelming response from parents, plans are already underway for further expansion over the next few months, with the redevelopment of a cottage in the grounds which will have a large outdoor play space and will be ready to accept children in the autumn . A NEW DAY HOUSE AT THE KING’S SCHOOL, CANTERBURY Following hot on the heels of the impressive new Pupil Social Centre The King’s School have opened a new state-of-the-art Day House on St Radigund’s Street, just outside the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. The new Mitchinson’s House, which can accommodate seventy-five day pupils, is the culmination of years of planning and hard work by the school Estates team and the numerous contractors involved. The new site has a fascinating background, including an important part in the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang story. The existing building, whose listed frontage and timber elements have been retained, was the original auto-works used by Count Louis Zborowski, an English racing driver and automobile engineer. Following the death of his father in 1903 and his mother in 1911 Louis became the fourth richest under21-year-old in the world with a personal wealth of £11million and a property portfolio which included 7 acres of Manhattan and several blocks of Fifth Avenue, New York. His home, however, remained the Higham Park estate at Bridge, near Canterbury which had been purchased by his mother in 1910. It was here in Kent that a young Louis pursued his interest in racing cars, designing and building a number of cars in his autoworks at St Radigund’s and storing them in the stables at Higham Park.The first of these cars was powered by a 23-litre six cylinder Maybach aero engine and called “Chitty Bang Bang”.The origin of the name is disputed but the cars were reportedly so loud that Canterbury passed a law prohibiting them from 84
entering within the city walls. Chitty 1 was raced at Brooklands in 1921, winning two races and reaching speeds of over 100mph. On its next outing the car was refitted, improving the speed to almost 120mph before crashing and subsequently being retired from racing. Chitty 1 was followed by three more Chitty cars which variously took part in races at Brooklands and even an expedition to the Sahara Desert. Zborowski’s passion for racing ended abruptly in disaster when he crashed at the Italian Grand Prix in 1924 at the age of just 29. The legend of the cars, however, lived on in the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang by Ian Fleming and the subsequent musical film and stage production.
The former auto-works building, which features a blue plaque commemorating Zborowski, has been reconfigured and extended to provide contemporary areas for both study and leisure activities within easy reach of the main school buildings. The impressive new Day House continues the £50million development at the School which includes a 350-seat theatre and underlines the School’s commitment to the local community. CREATIVE ENDEAVOURS AT ST LAWRENCE COLLEGE It’s been a busy and very creative term for both Junior and Senior School pupils at St Lawrence College in Ramsgate. Continuing its Learning Partnership with Turner Contemporary, the School held an exclusive evening event for parents, pupils, staff and friends to showcase senior pupils’ work on T S Eliot’s poem ‘The Waste Land’. The school has worked closely with the gallery since 2014 and the current exhibition, ‘Journeys with The Waste Land’, is the third collaboration between the organisations.

As well as an impressive display of art and photography by pupils, there was a performance of music and spoken word, before guests were then able to enjoy a private viewing of the exhibition alongside several members of the Waste Land Research Group, some of whom had worked with the pupils, coming into School to share their knowledge.
St Lawrence College Junior School pupils had the wonderful opportunity of exhibiting their work in the York Street Gallery in Ramsgate for a week at the end of February, part of a prize won by the talented young artists who entered the Thanet Rotary Club Young Artist Exhibition last year. The work submitted for exhibition spanned the age range from Reception to Year 6 and showcased a vast variety of media.

TEDxFolkestone is being organised by Liú Batchelor, the Folkestonebased coach and project leader, and a committee of like-minded professionals as part of the global TEDx event programme that highlights ideas worth spreading. Liú Batchelor, said: “The response from potential speakers was excellent and we have been able to pull together what will be a thought-provoking, challenging and diverse programme covering a wide variety of courage-related issues.” Themes for the talks include how individuals deal with situations requiring personal and collective courage, whether it’s saving a life, surviving infidelity, and broader issues such as globalisation, education, and the next big idea.
