FLOODS DEVASTATE DAVAO ORIENTAL AS GOVERNOR DECLARES ‘STATE OF CALAMITY’

The whole province of Davao Oriental has grappled with heavy rain, flooding and landslides since the beginning of January, prompting evacuations and spurring Governor Nińo S. Uy. to declare an official “state of calamity” in the whole province.

At least 2 people have died and 4 were severely injured in January, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, and more than 64,330 people have been displaced. Torrential rains have occurred nearly every day this month and have destroyed homes, agriculture and infrastructure across the country.

The downpours are happening even though the Philippines is normally in its cool, dry season from December to February. Davao Oriental, the Northern Mindanao region and the Eastern Visayas in central Philippines are among the affected areas.

The Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,100 islands, is ranked among the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate-related disasters, but it is a minor contributor to global climate change.

The Philippines is typically hit with 20 typhoons each year and roughly six to nine storms that make landfall annually. The country also experiences frequent landslides and floods that are partly a result of the increasing intensity of tropical cyclones.

The governor, who was recently overseeing aid distribution in Lupon, said there must be a long-term solution to the flood-

ing in the country.

“We are looking at everything to find a solution,” Uy said last week. “But in the long term, we need to think about how we can do it so that this never happens again.”

The deadly flooding this month has prompted fears over how climate change is triggering more frequent and intense extreme weather across the country. Typhoons, sea level rise and storm surge, all of which put the Philippines’ urban and coastal populations at high risk, are expected to intensify as climate change worsens.

SEVERAL national highways and major bridges in some municipalities in Davao Oriental were reported to be partially damaged caused by continuous downpours as an effect of the current surge of Northeast monsoon (Amihan) and the trough of Low-Pressure Area (LPA) affecting the entire north and southeast side of Mindanao.

In an updated report from the Provincial Local Government Unit of Davao Oriental (PLGU-DavOr) at least five areas in the municipality of Caraga recorded minor to major landslides and soil erosions where the LGU confirmed some of them are only passable by small vehicles.

In the municipality of Lupon, a minor landslide has been reported at Banhawan in Barangay Marayag, and the LGU has already responded by prepositioning heavy equipment to clean the area.

Meanwhile, a concrete bridge in Barangay Don Leon Balante (Tigbawan) connecting to Barangay PM Sobrecarey was damaged amid the heavy torrents of the Kawaig River.

On the other hand, Sitio Papag in Barangay Poblacion was submerged again in a heavy flood, causing the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDDRMO) and its security clusters to activate the search and rescue operation.

The PLGU-DavOr also recorded major landslides along Sitio Slide, Barangay Mayo, Mati City where the road is deemed not passable to all types of vehicles as of the present.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) of the City of Mati also reported ongoing flash floods along Rotunda, Barangay Dahican and in Barangay Madang.

49 FAMILIES in Lupon receive relief goods

AThese calamities are reported a few weeks after the effects of the shear line have been logged.

As of press writing, all municipalities and city in the province have released their respective Executive Orders (EOs) declaring suspension of classes while only a few opted to suspend the work in government offices starting from January 29, this year until further notice.

This is still in line with Section 2 of Presidential Executive Order No. 66, series of 2012, which states that “In the absence of typhoon signals from Pagasa, localized cancellation or suspension of classes and work in government offices may be implemented by local chief executives.”

Based on the daily bulletin board by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Davao Oriental will experience heavy rains as Amihan and the trough of LPA will be the dominant weather system for weeks.

Additionally, close to 500 individuals in the Davao Region are sheltered in evacuation centers while being assisted by the Department of Social Work and Development-Davao Region (DSWD-Davao) as confirmed by Franz Irag, operations chief of the Office of the Civil Defense-Davao Region (OCD-Davao).

TOTAL of 49 affected families from several barangays in the municipality of Lupon have been given basic commodities and relief goods through the massive relief operation conducted by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) on February 1, 2024.

Based on the data provided by the Municipal Government Unit of Lupon, Davao Oriental, 7 families and 9 families were reported from Barangay Poblacion and Barangay Langka, respectively; 8 families in Barangay Cocornon; 13 families in Barangay Ilangay; 7 families in Barangay Corporacion; 5 families on Barangay Don Mariano Marcos.

Local schools played a pivotal role in identifying families most in need, ensuring that the assistance reaches those who require it the most. Through close collaboration with educators and school administrators, the distribution

process was streamlined, allowing for efficient and equitable allocation of resources.

“I cannot express how grateful we are for this support,” remarked Maria Rodriguez, a mother of a student from LNCHS whose family received a relief package. “With my husband’s job affected by the crisis, it’s been a struggle to make ends meet. These supplies will make a world of difference for our children and ease some of our worries.”

The generosity and compassion exhibited by volunteers and donors have been instrumental in driving the success of these relief ef-

forts. Countless individuals have come forward to offer their time, resources, and expertise, embodying the spirit of solidarity that defines our community.

“These relief efforts exemplify the power of collective action in times of adversity,” stated Mayor Lim. “By standing together and supporting one another, we demonstrate our resilience as a community and our unwavering commitment to ensuring that no family is left behind.”

Meanwhile, the LGU-Lupon alongside the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Manage-

ment Council (PDRRMO) and other humanitarian and disaster aid clusters have started their repacking of another batch of relief goods to be transported to isolated communities that were greatly affected by the massive flooding caused by the trough of the LPA since January 29.

The fund comes from the provincial government’s Quick Response Fund (QRF) under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) activating the financial aid, relief, and rehabilitation services to the communities affected by calamity or any natural disasters such as flooding.

KEEP PETS SAFE during natural disasters, Luponians urged

LUPON - Animal rights advocates reminded on Monday Luponians to keep their house pets safe during natural disasters, in the wake of the massive flooding in municipality that resulted in the death of several animals.

Concerned Netizens all over social media issued the reminder following the photos circulating on social media showing dogs drowning.

Some of the images showed that the ill-fated dogs were still in chains and some in their cages when they died after floods hit the city early this week.

Authorities said the flooding was caused by a localized thunderstorm that brought heavy rains.“In the event of any disaster, fire, earthquake, flood, and any other fortuitous events, please don’t leave your pets behind. Secure them, unleash

them, uncage them, so they can find a way to survive,” animal activists on Facebook told the people.

Pet owners and local government units, should include their pets in their disaster preparedness plan and designate holding areas for pets in evacuatio n centers.

Animal activists proposed that the local government create an animal welfare council that would also focus on the welfare of pets.

“And when a disaster is over, look for them. Just like you, they are scared too,” they told pet owners.

FLOODS hit Lupon roads; 1 LPA monitored

Davao Oriental, Philippines — Parts of the Municipality of Lupon were submerged in floodwaters due to heavy rains yesterday, causing traffic jams in major roads.

A portion of Aguinaldo Street in Barangay Poblacion had up to 13 inches of floodwater since before noon, according to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC).

Private vehicles and pedicabs using the Rizal Street at the innermost lane of the municipality of Lupon got stuck and did not attempt to pass through the deep flood.

The floodwaters even almost completely submerged the concrete barrier of the Bus Carousel, resulting in the line of stranded ve-

hicles to reach as far as Barangay Ilangay and Barangay Bagumbayan.

A traffic enforcer was assigned to assist motorists who attempted to drive through the flood.

The flood at Barangay Poblacion subsided at around 3:20 p.m., allowing some cars to pass through, the MDRRMC reported.

The floods also invaded some terminal stations of the Municipality, causing delay in the normal deployment of vehicles.

LUPON, DAVAO ORIENTAL – Several local government units in Davao Oriental suspended classes on Monday as incessant rains caused flooding in low-lying communities.

Davao Oriental Governor Nińo S. Uy ordered the suspension of classes at all levels for both public and private institutions in the province due to inclement weather.

The provincial government said the suspension of work would depend on the discretion of the town mayors.

Before the issuance of the directive by the capitol, mayors in the towns of Lupon, Banaybanay, Cateel and Mati City also signed a tsimilar directive.

The document emphasizes that classes are automatically canceled in schools situated in Local Government Units issued with orange and red rainfall warnings by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

An orange rainfall warning was issued in the southern part of Davao. Red rainfall advisory is issued when rainfall is more than 30 mm (millimeter) within one hour or if it has continued for the past three hours and is more than 65 mm.

The orange rainfall advisory is raised in areas where rainfall is between 15 mm and 30 mm within an hour.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways closed road sections in Badas, Mati City due to minor landslides; PAGASA said on Monday that the shear line affecting the southern section of Davao Oriental is expected to dump heavy rains.

In SDO Davao Oriental, the

education department has recorded 4,263 schools that shifted to modular distance learning modality due to shear line affecting the southern section of Davao Oriental and northeast monsoon affecting Luzon.

SDO Davao Oriental SDS advised learners and parents to wait for the announcement and clearance from their local chief executives when to resume their in-person classes, as DepEd also prioritizes the safety of everyone.

30 STRANDED Davao Oriental miners return home safely; 10 DEAD and 30 INJURED due to shearline

DYK?

In a heartwarming turn of events, the relatives of LNCHS students who were trapped in a mining accident have been safely reunited with their families. The harrowing ordeal began when a mine collapse occurred several days ago in Masara in Maco, Davao de Oro.

Amidst tense rescue efforts, which involved coordinated operations by emergency response teams and mining experts, there was an air of uncertainty shrouding the fate of those trapped below. However, hope persisted as rescue teams tirelessly worked around the clock to reach the stranded individuals.

Today, that hope blossomed into jubilation as the relatives of the trapped students were finally able to embrace their loved ones once more. Tears of relief flowed freely as families were reunited, with emotional scenes unfolding at the mine entrance.

“I can’t describe the feeling of seeing my uncle walk out of that mine,” exclaimed one student, overcome with emotion. “We’ve been hold-

ing onto hope, and now our prayers have been answered.”

The successful rescue operation serves as a testament to the dedication and bravery of the rescue teams involved, who risked their own safety to ensure the well-being of others. Additionally, it highlights the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

As the community comes together to celebrate this miraculous outcome, efforts to investigate the cause of the mine collapse and prevent similar incidents in the future are already underway. However, for now, the focus remains on cherishing the precious moments of reunion and gratitude for the safe return of loved ones.

School District Hosts FIL-IRI Sessions to Test Student Reading Ability

Idesigned to assess students’ reading abilities and diagnose potential learning disabilities.

An analysis of test scores before and after the implementation of FIL-IRI sessions revealed that an insignificant number of students showed improved reading abilities. On average, students who participated in FIL-IRI sessions showed a 15% decrease in their reading comprehension scores.

According to the district’s superintendent, the FIL-IRI sessions are an important step in identifying students who may be struggling with reading and providing a targeted, effective response. “By identifying potential learning disabilities early on, we can develop an individualized plan for each student to help them reach their full potential,” said the superintendent.

“It’s been amazing to see our children’s progress after participating in the FIL-IRI sessions. The personalized attention and support that the sessions provide have

really made a difference in their reading abilities and confidence levels. As a parent, I’m grateful for the opportunity for my child to receive this support and for the district’s commitment to ensuring that all students can achieve their reading potential!” says a parent.

The positive response from parents reflects the effectiveness of FIL-IRI sessions in improving reading comprehension. These sessions provide targeted instruction, assessment, and intervention, which can help struggling students improve their reading ability, resulting in improved comprehension and higher test scores.

However, a parent has also responded, “I’m not sure that these FIL-IRI sessions are having a positive impact on my child. I haven’t noticed any improvements in their reading abilities, and I’m worried that

they’re just another form of testing students and adding to their stress levels. I wish the district would focus more on providing a supportive and positive learning environment instead of just another way to assess students.”

While some parents have raised concerns about the privacy and confidentiality of the testing process, district officials have stated that all testing is conducted in accordance with student privacy laws and regulations. They also hope that the FIL-IRI sessions will ultimately help to reduce the number of students who struggle with reading and improve overall learning outcomes.

The FIL-IRI sessions are expected to be ongoing throughout the school year, and district officials are already looking ahead to expanding the program to middle and high schools in the coming years.

Tricycle Drivers Underfired After Student Rape Incident

In the wake of a horrifying rape incident involving a student and a local tricycle driver, the incident occurred two weeks ago in Davao City when a student was sexually assaulted by a tricycle driver while on her way home. The incident has not only shaken the community but also cast a dark shadow over the tricycle drivers, who are now under intense scrutiny.

The news spread like wildfire, causing widespread fear and anger among the residents. Parents are now hesitant to let their children use tricycle services, fearing for their safety.

Tricycle drivers, who were once seen as reliable and convenient means of transportation, are now viewed with suspicion. Many drivers report a significant drop in passengers, and some have even been subjected to verbal abuse. “We are all being painted with the same brush. It’s not fair,” says one of the drivers.

The local government has responded swiftly to the incident. A thorough investigation is underway, and there are plans to implement stricter regulations for tricycle drivers. These include mandatory background checks, regular drug testing, and training on passenger safety.

However, these measures have done little to assuage the fears of the community. Parents are demanding more concrete actions, such as the installation of CCTV cameras in tricycles and the presence of security personnel at tricycle stands.

The incident has also sparked a broader conversation about women’s safety. Activists are calling for comprehensive sex education in schools and stricter punishment for sexual offenders. “This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers women face every day. We need to address this issue at its root,” says a local activist.

Meanwhile, the tricycle drivers are grappling with the stigma attached to their profession. Many are worried about their livelihoods and are calling for the perpetrator to be brought to justice. “We want the culprit to be punished. His actions have affected all of us,” says a driver.

As the community continues to reel from the incident, it is clear that the road to recovery will be long and fraught with challenges. However, there is a collective resolve to ensure the safety of all residents and restore the reputation of the tricycle drivers.

Students of LNCHS commented and expressed their thoughts and doubts about the issue.

“Stop the hate and spread love towards each other, let people be confident!”

Teachers of Lupon National Comprehensive High School were also shaken up by the issue calling the attention and awareness to spread love to each other, “if only I can teach people to be good and to be grateful for having one another then we can have a better world where no toxicity will linger”. Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray said.

PASSION FOR LEADERSHIP

An alumna from Lupon National Comprehensive High School won the position of SK Chairwoman in Barangay Ilangay.

Princess Mae Villamor Suyman is currently a college student who graduated from LNCHS with flying colors and visualized as a student-leader since elementary, and is now a leader for the youth of Barangay Ilangay.

“Truth is, I did not have any intentions to enter politics. It was my father who pushed me to run for SK Chairperson because he saw that the youth in our barangay longed for change, and he believed that I can lead. “

Even though Ms. Suyman was known as a student-leader, entering politics and running for the position of SK Chairwoman is a

big step for her, but still, her father pushed and believed in her capabilities in being a leader.

“Now that our constituents gave us a chance to serve them, we plan to bring our platform to life. We aim to help, if not prevent them to mitigate concerns that negatively impact our youth on issues such as on education and health. In addition, I want to uplift other sports, not just ball games which are commonly criticized for being the only games to be focused on by other administrations. I also hope to give my constituents a chance to showcase their talents on dancing, singing, and arts.”

It is visible in her advocacy and plans that she wants the best for everyone and talk about the issues that are neglected by

the others and take action in helping and preventing it.

“All of these would not be possible if not for the experiences I had during my early years. One of the greatest contributions of who I am today is what I’ve learned from my experiences in school. I have led, been criticized, loved, and inspired which helped me today on how I perceive and act on situations. I really believe that everything happens for a reason and that everything that I went through was part of the preparation for me to be a leader. I am not perfect, but I strive to become better every day.”

“I want to become a leader for everyone, not just a leader of a few.”

In an unexpected turn of events, parts of Metro Manila have been grappling with frequent power interruptions over the past week, causing significant distress among residents and local businesses.

The recent power outages in parts of Metro Manila and surrounding areas have once again sparked conversation about power electric interruptions in the Philippines. These outages have been a long-standing issue, with increasing demand for power from a growing population causing a rise in frequency.

In an interview, an energy expert stated, “The impact of these power electric disruptions is not only felt by the economy, but also by the daily lives of people. We need to take a more comprehensive approach in addressing this issue and work towards finding

long-term solutions to improve the power supply in the country.”

Ahorrifying gang rape incident occurred in the Philippines where a 20-year-old woman was brutally assaulted by more than 10 men. The shocking crime took place in a public place, highlighting the prevalence of sexual violence in the country.

The victim, identified only as ‘Nicole’, was lured to an isolated area under a bridge in the city of San Pedro. There, she was ambushed and held down by several men while others took turns raping her.

Nicole’s family is deeply saddened by the tragedy and is demanding justice for their daughter. “This is an inhuman act that is beyond comprehension,” said Nicole’s mother. “We are devastated and want whoever is responsible to be held accountable.”

Nicole’s family is shattered by this brutal crime. They are in shock and disbelief that something like this could happen to their daughter. The parents are seeking justice and support from the authorities and the community to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“This is a horrific example of the violence and brutality that women face in our society,” said investigator John Doe. “We are taking this case very seriously and every effort is being made to identify and prosecute the individuals responsible.”

The police are actively investigating the case and have identified several suspects. They are gathering evidence and statements from witnesses and victims to build a solid

case for prosecution. The police have also set up a special task force to address sexual assault cases and advocate for victims’ rights.

“This horrific crime has shocked and outraged the local community,” said a community leader. “We stand in solidarity with the victim and her family, and we demand that those responsible be held accountable for their actions.”

The local community has organized protests and vigils to show their support for the victim and her family. They’ve also set up support groups for survivors of sexual assault and their loved ones. The public pressure on the authorities to expedite the investigation and prosecution process is significant.

INFLATION AND RISING FEES : The Impact on Parent’s Budget

n recent months, prices of many goods and services have gone up and the inflation rate is at a 40-year high, leading to increased costs of groceries, fuel, and other essentials. This rising cost of living places a significant burden on many of the parents’ needs and money causing them great complaints.

The Increased cost of living affects many areas of daily lives including transportation. Many parents exclaimed and complained that everything has become increasingly difficult to keep up, especially during this holiday season.

I“As parents, we are feeling the impact of inflation on the cost of essential services like education and childcare. This may require us to make tough financial decisions, such as cutting back on discretionary spending or exploring more affordable options for these services. We need to mindful of our budgets and make sacrifices to cope with the rising costs.” Says a parent. Due to rapid inflation, parents must

make sacrifices, such as reducing non-essential purchases or exploring alternative options for childcare and education, to manage their budgets and offset any potential financial strain.

“We understand that the cost-of-living crisis is a significant concern for many families and individuals,” said a government representative. “Our government is committed to supporting those who are struggling and taking action to address the root causes of inflation.”

The government recognizes the impact of rising fees on families and communities and is taking steps to address this issue. As inflation continues to rise, the government is working closely with experts and stakeholders to monitor the situation and implement strategies to mitigate its effects.

Inflation can negatively impact the economy and individuals’ budgets. Furthermore, some areas of the economy may benefit from increased spending, such as real estate, as people may choose to upgrade homes or invest in properties.

VOTE BUYING BITES, YOUTH FIGHTS: EMPOWERING YOUNG MINDS

The 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections held on October 30 were not merely a contest between candidates; it was a battleground for the future of Philippine democracy. In this pivotal moment, a harmful force emerged, targeting the 1,654,373 registered young voters with the` potential to shape our nation’s path, particularly focusing on the most vulnerable: the students and first-time voters.

Vote buying, a familiar predator, preys on the uninformed and the desperate. According to a study by Mustika et al., young people, often brimming with idealism but lacking experience, become easy targets for manipulative tactics. Through subtle manipulations, young voters were unwittingly drawn into the web of money politics. Charitable projects timed around elections, promises of quick cash whispered in hushed tones, door-to-door campaigns with overflowing boxes of “door prizes” become insidious marketing strategies, each gift a silent plea for electoral support.

This indirect feeding of money politics is perhaps more dangerous than its blatant counterpart. It exploits the vulnerabil-

ity and naivety of young voters, luring them with the allure of immediate gratification before they even grasp the true cost of their vote. Furthermore, it normalizes the exchange of political support for personal gain, eroding the very foundations of a healthy democracy. This not only undermines the integrity of the election process but also creates a dangerous cycle of dependence on patronage politics. Young minds are conditioned to believe that their vote is a commodity, not a powerful tool for shaping their future.

However, hope still glimmers amidst us. The very susceptibility of young voters to manipulation also speaks to their potential for engagement. Their idealism, once harnessed, can become a powerful

force for positive change. We must empower them with knowledge, not merely warnings. Interactive voter education programs, accessible explanations of platforms, and debates focused on youth concerns are crucial to equip them with the tools to make informed decisions.

In today’s dynamic democracy, political knowledge alone isn’t sufficient. Young voters need a toolkit of critical thinking skills to navigate the complex currents. Active listening helps discern fact from opinion, while the ability to identify, describe, and analyze emerging issues empowers them to understand the landscape. Assessment skills let them evaluate solutions, and creativity allows them to shape public discourse

Bby identifying and articulating concerns. By wielding this arsenal, young voters become more than informed citizens; they become active contributors to shaping their future.

The fight against money politics is not a one-sided battle. It requires a collective effort from young voters, civil society, and responsible leaders to raise awareness, hold perpetrators accountable, and promote a culture of ethical politics. By wielding the power of informed choices and collective action, young voters can transform the dance floor of Philippine elections, replacing the seductive sway of money with the powerful steps of a truly democratic future.

efore the start of S.Y. 2023 - 2024, the Department of Education ordered that classroom walls should be free from visual aids and decorations. “All walls should be bare for classrooms to be clean J. orderly and functional” DepEd spokesperson Michael Boa relayed Duterte’s directive in a radio interview. These implemented order would help teachers to focus their salary on more vital things for their daily lives.

Digging deeper to the policy implemented, the DepEd secretary implied that these decorations prevents learners from focusing in their studies and removing it from the classroom walls should be done. Decorations may add to the beauty inside a certain class but it takes away the student’s attention from the teachers, hampering them from learning crucial lessons and topics.

On the other hand Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) stated that there is enough evidences showing that educational posters contribute to learning. There are many ways a student can learn and gain knowledge, listening to the teachers are not only the processes of learning, but also by looking at pictures or diagrams and other things that requires the use of our eyes. Acknowledging other pro-

cesses of learning can greatly make learning inclusive to all other children.

Looking further at the uses of visual aids, learners in kindergarten mostly learns through educational posters. For instance, learning colors knowing the types of emotions, and learning the process of simple addition. Making the classroom walls bare would really prevent the students in kindergarten to learn numerous things that is beneficial for their growth. It would also make learning for them a not easy challenge.

Bringing light to the other side of this issue, expenses from educational posters are from teachers pockets as stated by Philstar In their article. It is not new to the knowledge of Filipinos that teachers’ salary are only

sufficient for supplying the needs of their daily lives. These educators only get a miniscule amount of money for leisure that they deserve, instead they use this to beautify the walls and corners of their classrooms.

On the whole, classrooms should be minimized of educational posters, but still leave some crucial one’s for students in lower levels especially in kindergarten. Let us also consider where the budget of their educational posters are from, which is towards the sweat and energy teachers use daily. The main purpose office working is not only for students to learn, but for them to live and not beautify.

MIXED PROFESSIONS, MIXED UP EDUCATION

Effects of Out of Field Teaching to a Learning Institution

Psalm Alda

editorial

eachers are known to be bearers of precious knowledge and heroes of young dreamers, however, they are faced with many adversaries inflicting storms of trouble in their lives, and out-of-field teaching is one of the culprits. Educators teaching unspecialized subjects is rampant worldwide, according to one of the studies in International Journal of Multidisciplinary Research (IJMR). Learning is crucial in building a hope-filled future for the youth and to make it effective and efficient, an educator must have a vast knowledge of the subject he/she teaches. Considering those, out-of-field teaching should be prevented since it lowers the proficiency of learning for students, causing a mixed up state of education for willed young dreamers.

Digging deeper to the circumstance, a group of education workers worried the reported resignation of over a hundred (100) teachers only in Visayas to search for better job opportunities outside the country, as stated by Manila Bulletin. Additionally, 5 educators of Lupon National Comprehensive High School (LNCHS) had also filed their resignation last school year to work abroad. With this situation causing a lack of educators in the educational system of the country, the learning journey of numerous students and the near future of the country would be in great peril, pushing learning institutions to implement a double edged solution —out of field teaching.

In addition to the lack in teaching force, the K-12 curriculum also intensified the insufficiency in the number of teachers. Based on a research from University of Mindanao, our country faces a shortage in teaching force

as a result to Department of Education’s K-12 curriculum, and about 60,000 teachers are needed to address this deficit. Teachers play a vital role in the education of students, without them a step cannot be taken towards learners’ yearned bright future filled with dreams and achievements. This problem puts the state of learning in a stir, worsening the storm that looms above Filipinos education, hence, it is difficult to put an end to out of field teaching, since it is treated as a solution to the current issue.

Nonetheless, as we closely look on the other hand, in a study from IJMR, a researcher confirmed that out-of-field teaching is widespread and affects teachers’ teaching efficacy. In addition, teachers working on unspecialized subjects tends to have low self-esteem. Educators spends about 4 years mastering the subjects they teach and from their experience in these years ensures the effectiveness of

their work. Also, in those years of mastering, they find the confidence to face and educate students on a daily basis. Even though outof-field teaching patches up a timely problem it can strongly make learning inefficient and ineffective, taking away its importance

Moreover, many new educators are presently waiting for an opportunity to be working on DepEd since it offers more salary than in some private schools. A great number of 24,829 teachers for elementary education and 48,005 for secondary education passed in the recently concluded Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) this year, from the Republic of the Philippines. With the new Licensed Professional Teachers, it is hope that DepEd can use them to attain to a better resolution to the issue of the lack of teaching force in vital learning places and not use out of field teaching instead.

REVISING THE K-10 CURRICULUM: MAKING EDUCATION ACCESSIBLE AND EQUITABLE

The revised and recently implemented K-10 curriculum in the Philippines, known as the MATATAG (Mastery of Basic Learning Subjects in a Timely Accomplished and Graduated Way) curriculum, has gained much attention in the country. Many experts and stakeholders have raised concerns about the effectiveness and efficiency of the MATATAG curriculum, particularly in addressing the problems of poor student performance, the lack of a structured and organized approach to learning, and the high rate of student failure and retention. While I acknowledge these concerns, I believe that the MATATAG curriculum has the potential to make significant improvements to the education system in the Philippines.

As it was being said to have less concern regarding this school year, the continuous rapid increase of overcrowding is causing classrooms to be unpleasantly uncomfortable causing complaints to students. Over 28 million students are enrolled in the school year 2021-2022; and 22 million students are recorded to be enrolled in this school year, according to DepEd. A higher chance is observed that the number will increase as being stated by DepEd.

Concerning as it can be, I, as a student, find it extremely unpleasant and uncomfortable having such an irresistible and distracting environment in learning. It is a matter of concern of how the number gets higher as the school year proceeds. The fact that these small quantities of classrooms aren’t enough, I still don’t sense the changes of their conducted actions about the issue.

However, aside from the crowded environment, I can also feel how the unavoidable and observable situations are causing the teachers. Studies show that overcrowded classroom conditions not only make it difficult for students to concentrate on their lessons, but inevitably limit the amount of time teachers can spend on innovative teaching methods such

as cooperative learning and group work or on teaching anything beyond the bare minimum required by the curriculum.

Giving the stated situation, from the bare minimum, we students are still forced to attend in such an environment, whether we like it or not.

According to DepEd, 18 percent of the entire student population in the Philippines are forced to attend extremely overcrowded public schools. This concerning situation makes me completely unmotivated to go to school. What’s even worse is that it’s completely ruining our ability to focus, affecting our overall mental health and well-being.

Despite the shortage of space for many students at public schools in the Philippines, the DepEd had never attempted to purchase land for new school sites for several reasons. Instead, the DepEd focused on constructing additional classrooms at existing school sites. While purchasing new school sites may seem like a more effective solution to overcrowding, the DepED has decided to focus on constructing more classrooms at existing school sites. I believe while this method can alleviate overcrowding and improve academic performance, it may not address the root

causes of the issue, such as limited land availability.

Conversely, the DepEd also developed and implemented a wide range of strategies that were often seen as controversial. This includes splitting classrooms in two using wall dividers; and dividing the classes into morning and afternoon. Still, these solutions did not solve our problem, and the learning environment in congested public schools continued to deteriorate.

Combining what has been stated so far, immediate action from the overflowing of crowded classrooms must be taken. Addressing classroom overpopulation and overcrowding requires a comprehensive approach. If there is not enough budget for comprehensive solutions, cost-effective measures can be implemented to alleviate some of the issues. Advocates should continue to prioritize increased funding for education and comprehensive solutions to address the issue in the long-term. DepED should also explore long-term strategies for improving public school infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all Filipino children.

The lack of teachers is a great problem faced by the country’s educational system, but it is without a doubt that out of field teaching is not the best solution to mend this issue. Every year thousands of Filipinos graduate with a degree in education and with enough experience the Department of Education should include them to be one of the new educators being the vessels of knowledge and hope for young dreamers, while also resolving the challenges posed by the lack of teachers.

With all of this, as out of field teaching mixes up hard earned profession of educators, it also possesses detrimental effects to the efficiency and effectiveness of learning. It is etched in every humans mind how important quality education is in determining the future of young individuals, thus, we should put a stop in tending to out of field teaching to defy learning limitations and not have a mixed up education.

ELECTION CHAOS

Michaella Vecino

One of the responsibilities that each student must undertake at the very beginning of each school year is to choose officers who will lead the entire class during that academic year. Chosen officers must be responsible for all class activities, guide their peers and be aware of what should be done inside the classroom. However, students tend to be irresponsible in choosing their leaders, leading the class in a complete mess.

When students fail to choose the right leaders, it is expected that unity will be nowhere to be found inside the class. “When it’s time to elect the class officers, students should not vote jokingly, others don’t think that when they do that, they are also the ones who will be negatively affected, based on experience, when the leaders fail to lead, the whole class are chaotic, and there is no unity in the section”, a grade 12 STEM student shared during an interview. In light of this statement, choosing individuals who will serve and guide us must be taken seriously.

Being a class officer is a very hard responsibility one must consider in a serious manner. Since it is their goal to ensure the discipline and safety of the class, before considering the position, they should make sure that they have the capability and dedication to lead, organize and facilitate the` whole class. If chosen leaders don’t have the confidence to rightfully lead, it is their responsibility to step down and be honest about it.

On a serious note, some classroom officers tend to fastly accept the position they were given to without even thinking if they could really handle the responsibilities. As a result, they can’t fulfill their duties and unintentionally let the whole class mess up the whole school year. Officers should really have a genuine dedication and capability to lead.

In addition, during the election, the whole class must be guided by the advisers to ensure if the nominees do really have the capability to guide the class. Some students tend to vote irresponsibly so teachers should address this and discipline them. Selecting officers more on the basis of popularity or connections than on a track record of leadership and service should also be stop.

And to us students, we must be aware that it is also our responsibility to choose the right leaders within the class and call out the chosen ones in order to make sure that we will surely benefit from their leadership skills. Electing officers is honestly like electing politicians in our country, we must ensure that as we cast our votes, we know for sure that the elected ones are responsible and capable of being a good leader.

Maximizing the Budget of Teachers

The workplace of an employee is widely thought to be their second home where they will spend most of their hours in a single workday, but imagine it shaped not as a comfortable working space but a cramped and chaotic area in shambles. A situation common in the work environment of teachers in Lupon National Comprehensive High School (LNCHS). Many studies shows that a work environment has an important role in determining the amount of dedication and enthusiasm employees give towards their jobs and who they deal with. Cramped workplaces are one of the many factors that pushes Filipino teachers to leave their motherland to go work in an unfamiliar environment in another country. Therefore, let us ensure that this institution can lend an enabling workplace to build a safe and healthy community to educators in the campus.

CRAMMING FOR EXAMS : Teachers Face Pressure Covering Entire Curriculum

On the other hand Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) stated that there is enough evidences showing that educational posters contribute to learning. There are many ways a student can learn and gain knowledge, listening to the teachers are not only the processes of learning, but also by looking at pictures or diagrams and other things that requires the use of our eyes. Acknowledging other processes of learning can greatly make learning inclusive to all other children.

It is not new to the knowledge of Filipinos that teachers’ salary are only sufficient for supplying the needs of their daily lives. These educators only get a miniscule amount of money for leisure that they deserve, instead they use this to beautify the walls and corners of their classrooms.

Let us also consider where the budget of their educational posters are from, which is towards the sweat and energy teachers use daily. The main purpose office working is not only for students to learn, but for them to live and not beautify.

The semester is coming to an end, and teachers are scrambling to cover all the material before the exams. This often results in cramming a lesson the night before the exam. Although cramming might work to some extent, it is not an effective learning method. Students are not given enough time to process the information and teachers become frustrated and stressed by the need to cover everything before the exam. This creates a vicious cycle that affects both students and teachers. Myself believed that cramming a lesson before an exam is a last resort rather than an effective learning method. It’s impossible to retain all the information and fully understand the subject matter in such a short period.

H.E. Gorst, in his book The Curse of Education, argues that as long as education is synonymous with memorizing organized information, it will continue to produce mediocrity. However, students often engage in the cramming study technique, especially in secondary and university education, to memorize large amounts of information in a short amount of time. Due to pressure to perform well and engage in extracurricular activities, along with other responsibilities, cramming has become a widely used study strategy. Despite its commonality, the technique is generally considered an undesirable study method and can lead to shortterm memory retention, stress, and burnout. Alternative study techniques should be prioritized instead of cramming, such as time management, note-taking, and active learning, to encourage a greater understanding of the material and promote better academic performance.

To begin with, cramming a lesson before an exam can lead to students and teachers feeling overwhelmed and anxious. This has been proven to increase stress levels, and can lead to panic and anxiety, making it a lot harder to take in information. They may feel like they don’t have enough time to fully comprehend the material, and they may miss important details.

I remember a time when I had to cram for my quizzes tomorrow. I spent the entire night studying my notes, only to realize that I’m definitely not gaining information. I was so stressed out that I couldn’t sleep, and I felt exhausted during the exam. This experience

taught me the importance of spacing out my studying and not leaving everything for the last minute.

Moving forward, cramming a lesson before an exam is not an effective learning method because it does not allow for deeper understanding of the material. Students need time to process the information and apply it to real-world scenarios. Rushing through a lesson before an exam might allow students to learn enough to pass the exam, but they will not have a deep understanding of the material. This means that they will not be able to apply the knowledge in practical situations.

I remember cramming for an economics exam, and just memorized enough information to pass the exam. However, I didn’t truly understand the concepts, and I struggled to use them in my later assignments. Had I had more time to study and process the information, I’m sure I would have had a much deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Additionally, cramming also places a heavy burden on teachers who have to cover all the material within a limited time frame. It creates stress among teachers and may lead to them rushing through lessons, which is not beneficial for students’ learning. Teachers who are stressed may not be equipped to deliver the lessons effectively, which can negatively affect students’ learning. I remember a time when my Math teacher was rushing through a lesson before an exam. He was so stressed and frustrated, and it affected his teaching. He would skip

over important details, and we students felt like we were not prepared for the exam. It was a difficult experience, and it was clear that my teacher was not happy with the situation.

Furthermore, teachers and students alike are under pressure to perform well, and the pressure to cram a lesson before an exam doesn’t help. It’s important to prioritize student learning and well-being, not just exam performance. This creates an unhealthy learning environment where students feel they have to sacrifice their well-being to do well in an exam. I remember a time when my English teacher created a comfortable and supportive learning environment. He encouraged our class to engage in discussions, ask questions, and share our opinions. This created a positive learning environment, and I felt more engaged with the material. It was a great experience, and it taught me the importance of creating a positive learning environment where students can thrive.

Consequently, the problem of teachers cramming a lesson before an exam due to a lack of time can be addressed by creating a more balanced and deliberate approach to teaching. This includes incorporating active learning techniques, ensuring that students have enough time to process the material, and finding ways to lighten the burden on teachers by using technology or other resources. This also includes creating balanced and deliberate teaching methods and prioritizing student learning and well-being in a supportive learning environment.

EMBRACING FASHION DIVERSITY

Accepting Cross-Dressings within School Regulations

The idea of cross-dressing which is the wearing of clothes made for the opposite sex and such has been accepted slowly by the public and people are starting to be more open about it now. This highlights the need to allow each individual to express themselves without the fear of judgement. With this growing acceptance, institutions should start to acknowledge this form of self-expression, allowing students to dress freely.

In fact, signed in 2017, DepEd’s Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy integrates “the principles of gender equality, gender equity, gender sensitivity, non-discrimination, and human rights” in elementary and high schools across the country. The 2017 DepEd order hopes to ensure students are protected from gender-related violence, abuse, exploitation, discrimination, and bullying, as well as to promote gender equality and non-discrimination across levels. Given the fact that the policy emphasizes gender equality, gender equity, and non-discrimination, we must be committed to creating an inclusive environment for each and everyone in the halls of education.

Allowing cross-dressings in school would surely create an environment where students feel confident and respected. “Strict dress codes infringe on a students

self-expression and make for a dull environment with little creativity”, staff writer of The Purple Tide Org, Thalia Sabit once said. In light of this statement, everyone should bear in mind that how students express themselves through their clothing should never be an issue.

Moreover, this will build empathy, understanding, and respect among students creating a unity within them. In an article written by Sumit Tiwari, it was stated that empathy enables individuals to understand the unique perspectives and experiences of their colleagues, fostering a sense of connection As it challenges the norms, it will help on allowing more people to be open about it and a lot will be encourage to acknowledge and accept everyone, letting then feel seen and respected.

As mentioned, the more

people become open about this, the discrimination about them would be lesser now. In fact, according to Pettigrew and Tropp in 2008, improving empathy toward diversity will reduce prejudice by reducing intergroup anxiety. This way, students will be encouraged to express themselves freely and can be ensured that their spaces will be safe away from potential bullying situations.

In order to create an environment wherein everyone feels safe and accepted by their self expressions through clothing, institutions should start embracing fashion diversity. As what the 2017 DepEd Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy, emphasises, we should continue on promoting acceptance and protect students from gender-related issues. The public should focus on reducing discrimination and cultivates empathy and understanding among students.

In the halls of education, where everyone should be able to express themselves freely, educators and students should collaborate and uphold principles on non-discrimination gender equality. Schools should actively support students to express themselves especially through their clothing choices. However, in able for everyone to completely accept this, students should also be aware that they must not abuse how the school are letting them have the free will to wear any clothes they want for themselves. They must bear in mind that there are rules and dress codes to be followed within the campus. While promoting inclusive community for students to feel that they are accepted for who they are, rules and regulations should be still maintained and also respected.

DETERIORATED LABORATORY SETUP

Lack of Laboratory Appliances

Aresearch conducted by the Department of Science and Technology, revealed that thousands of schools across the Philippines have no access to a well-equipped laboratory. This implies the shortage in appliances and inability of some institutions to provide the necessary facilities for students to conduct their experiments and learning experiences. In this field wherein ‘learning by doing’ is required, a poor laboratory setup deeply affects the outcome of the students’ performance.

Out of approximately 13,000 high schools across the Philippines, more than 4,500 have no access to a designated (and working) laboratory for their students. On the other hand, from the fraction which have working laboratories, around 2,800 have no access to newer, digital tools. In fact, the STEM students of Lupon National Comprehensive High School here in Lupon, Davao Oriental is one of the schools who are facing difficulties in laboratory activities, highlighting the need to address this problem involving the shortage in appliances and poor facilities.

To start of, it is a real struggle especially for STEM students to be dealing with a poor laboratory setup as this becomes a hindrance for them to rightfully perform the tasks they are asked to do so. “During sa ubang mga activities namo by group, dili kaayo makuha ang accurate nga results tungod sa mga kulang kulang nga appliances”, Valerie Asaias, a Grade 12 STEM student from LNCHS stated. In light of this statement, we cannot expect students to learn and gain knowledge if they are not well-provided with the right equipment.

Moreover, poor laboratory setup

will also mirror the absence of safety equipment including the safety tools and gears which will surely increase the risk of accidents and injuries on students while performing their tasks. “I remember when we conducted an experiment and that experiment deals with toxic solutions and explosions, and our laboratory doesn’t have any safety goggles”, stated by Junevel Catog, also a Grade 12 STEM student from the same school. Indeed shortage in laboratory equipment especially the ones for safety purposes will lead to unsafe demonstrations.

Furthermore, due to this kind of setup, students’ are limited from doing some of the important activities in line with their major subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology, simply to avoid such activities with difficult procedures, and safety concerns. In fact, it was stated by the MRC Lab that without the right tools, experiments would be prone to errors and inconsistencies, making it difficult to draw valid conclusions. As a result, students’ learning is negatively affected due to the limited application of theoretical knowledge in practical settings.

Addressing the overall laboratory setup should be prioritized in

order to help the students especially in the STEM field gain more experience and knowledge. Government and other stakeholders should invest more in laboratory appliances and make sure that schools are well-provided. They should collaborate on providing our students with enough tools throughout their academic journey. To avoid the limited and unsafe experiments, school laboratories should be given enough attention and support.

Needless to say, the government, industry stakeholders, and educational institutions should start on implementing programs that will allocate funds for providing, upgrading and maintaining school laboratory facilities, especially those that cater to STEM fields. Through these partnerships, they should also provide training programs for educators to ensure effective usage of the provided tools. A regular monitoring session should also be implemented in order to make sure that the environment of the students performing their experiments while gaining experiences is safe and accurate. This way, students can explore more scientific concepts and applications rightfully

Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty

Rethinking ChatGPT and its Use

Ajrah Gudes

The emergence of AI-powered language models like ChatGPT has sparked a critical conversation within the academic sphere, particularly regarding its potential for facilitating academic dishonesty and plagiarism. As a matter of fact, educators have been struggling with how to handle a new wave of student work produced with the help of artificial intelligence since OpenAI launched the chatbot in November 2022. While ChatGPT boasts impressive capabilities in generating human-quality text, its accessibility raises concerns about its ethical use within educational settings.

As a Grade 12 STEM student, I find myself constantly bombarded with numerous assignments and projects and rushed with deadlines. The pressure to excel and maintain high grades can be overwhelming, and AI tools that offer the ability to generate seemingly human-quality essays and assignments within minutes can be incredibly appealing. For me, ChatGPT is a very tempting solution to ease some of my academic burdens. Yet I doubt if doing exactly that could be considered plagiarism for it is not my own work.

Traditionally, plagiarism is defined as the act of using another person’s work or ideas without proper attribution, and has long been considered a serious offense in academic institutions. It undermines the fairness and credibility of academic institutions and erode the value of education. However, attached to this is the assumption that humans plagiarize from other humans.

In this case, ChatGPT do not follow the traditional sense of plagiarism. The text generated by ChatGPT has been taken from a variety of online sources. These data and info are then fused together to form a new whole text and is completely original to a fault. As a matter of fact, ChatGPT can fabricate details and the resulting text is not only original, it can be completely untrue and/or contains factual errors. Through this, it can also help students learn the skills of fact-checking and critical thinking.

Hence, the use of artificial intelligence tools does not automatically constitute academic dishonesty. It depends how the tools are used. For example, ChatGPT can be used to help poor writers form ideas from it, as well as to generate a rough draft that they can then revise and update. It can only be considered as academic dishonesty when the students use it to do their own homework, directly copying the text and submitting it as their own work, because they are not learning how to do it themselves. So, the students are to blame, not the AI tool itself.

The best approach to this issue would be to promote academic integrity where students understand the value of honesty and ethical conducts and enhance their critical thinking skills to develop their own ideas and arguments rather than relying on AI-generated content. Also, instead of fearing AI, educators can explore its potential as a learning tool and use it to provide personalized feedback, generate discussion prompts, and facilitate research.

Addressing the challenge of academic dishonesty posed by ChatGPT requires a collaborative effort from educators, students, and technology companies that ensure academic integrity and foster a positive learning environment, where technology complements rather than undermines the educational process. This serves as a wake-up call for the academia. We, as people of the 21st century, need to re-evaluate our practices and embrace innovative solutions to promote ethical and meaningful learning in the face of evolving technologies. By adapting to the changing landscape, we can ensure that AI becomes a tool for empowerment and genuine intellectual growth, rather than a facilitator of academic dishonesty.

A PART OF ME

The prodigious twins of LNCHS

Being alone in the world is a terrible thing.

Life is beautiful and cruel at the same time. It can offers you magnificent views that can satisfy your eyes; offers people to learn lessons with; let yourself experience all the things out of this world. It is a vast map you can endlessly try to explore in your entire life. On the other hand, life will also give you the heart breaks that will tear you apart. Events that will either leave you traumatize, anxious, or sympathetic. Lives burden will always be there. It is a hurdle, implemented years ago even before the long run. Having someone to share life is reality a haven, as if you are in the clouds. You are free to reach those dreams with a heart full of courage and hope because you know that no matter what happen, there is someone below, waiting for you. Someone who can take away your sorrows and griefs, and bring the colorful rainbow after the tremendous, tragic storm.

A sibling is a blessing but having a twin is more than a blessing. It is the most wonderful thing a parent can have as a gift from Above. You were able to share nine months with someone and you know that he will be with you always. Your sibling or twin is your ally and your biggest foe in life. You will learn to cherish things, to fight the things you want, and to sacrifice things for them.

They are your strength in tough times. LNCHS have had the grace to witness three sets of twins who are currently studying in the institution.

These twins are: Sheena and Shaina Masisay, Khim and Khian Roa, and lastly, Argon and Arigorn Sabuero. All are from the Grade 10 Department of LNCHS. Each set of pairs has a unique and similar abilities. The Masisay twin and Sabuero twin are paternal twins while the Roa’s are fraternal. It is long believe that twins should look alike but these twins prove this hypothesis wrong. Some of their physical features make each of them differ from each other. The most identical and hard to recognize are the Masisay twins, for they are really a carbon copy of each other. From their darkcurly hair to their cream like white skin; it is a challenge to recognize whether you are talking to Sheena or Shaina. The only thing their friends remember is a very unusual behavior of the two. They said that Shaina usually holds her phone or make tiktok videos unlike Sheena, the one who usually laugh.

Another example of twins being different in a way are the Sabuero twins. Argon, who was the first one to be born, has more chinito eyes than Arigorn. They both have the same height: 5’7ft but when it comes to weight, Arigorn surpass his twin. Weigh ing 49kg while

Argon only weighs 46kg. They are both fit and healthy. The Roa’s twins are different case. They are twins with opposite gender, unlike the other twins who are paternal and both have the same sex. Khian, who was a minute older than Khim, is a male and Khim is a female. They both have different heights: Khian, 5’3ft, and Khim, 5’4ft. Their features are not the same as well. When you look at both of them, surely you will be surprise to know that they shared a home in their mother’s womb for nine months. They are not look alike at all! Khian is more fit, has larger eyes, and has a messy black hair while Khim has more fats than her brother, though also fit, she has a chinita eyes and straight, black hair.

There are certain things we can point out about their differences. People whisper gossip about twins having an ability to perform

They all excel in their different events.

Hearts and mind do align sometimes. I have asked the six of them of what they felt about having someone who is their other half. Their responds move me. A wave of warmth overwhelm my heart as they have the same answer to my question. Their answered was that having their twins means joy. They enjoyed the company of one another. The answer that became precious to me was Khim’s added answer. She said that her brother, Khian, was the reason why the dark clouds in her rainy days suddenly disappear. That Khian was her sunshine that lifted her up through her time of need. Oh! The wonders of love is always a pure gift someone can have the honor to receive in his or her entire life.

A sibling is a gift from Above that no one can ever replace. The

RISE OF THE GIANTS

Miss Nepal, breaker of stereotype

Dreams were woven by the dreamer.

Have you ever had a dream you desperately want to become true? A dream you always have this feeling of solace whenever thinking of it that maybe someday you will make it true. It is indeed a dream come true for us, women, who are extra when it comes to size that we see Miss Universe Nepal 2023 walk with pride and beauty any insecure and shy people wish to have. Miss Nepal 2023 candidate, Jane Dipika Garrett, open a new window after she pave her way to Miss Universe to represent her country. Although she did not win, she wins the hearts of many women, especially plus size woman.

A warming feeling, it is true, to see such woman walk on stage. Life has ways to make you feel insecurities. My life as woman with plus size feels a heavy burden at most times. For years, I have heard that I need to be fit from countless mouths already. It is not wrong to ask, yet, I was drowned with self-doubt. I see my sister and friends put a makeup and dress whatever they want while I am in the corner, watching them trying to balance the redness of their cheeks and lips. I felt my

confidence eloping from my body. I am beautiful, I know that as we are created with grace and beauty, but I could not help myself. I can still feel envy living in my heart watching them look so lovely and confidently walking with their head held high. I always wish I was them. I wish I had their body, slim and full of beauty.

Being large in body size feels like I am a giant. Insecurities and anxiousness with your body arises from the bottom of my heart. It is like a rhyme you cannot rhyme. When you dress something that exposes your skin, a dress for example, is exhausting. If only people can hear thoughts. They will hear a loud anxious voice that speaks highly of worries. It drains the confidence stored in my body. Being with someone that is pretty and lean lets me resurface my insecurity. I am being reminded that I am a giant, trying to squeeze myself in such small circle of hope. So, it is better to conclude that I stay out of town and hide myself in my cave instead. To avoid feeling the stressing truth of being unfit in the world.

The 2023 Miss Universe, held in San Francisco, El Salvador, turned the tables for many plus size woman. Miss Nepal 2023, Jane Dipika Garrett,

made a way for every plus size woman. It was like waking up from your dreams and your heart was fulfilled to see it come true. The dark nights were turn to merry ones. Confidence knock the closed hearts of many women, including me. It is safe to assume that it is not just women with extra sizes that benefited with Miss Nepal’s opening doors, she influences the whole community of women.

Hearts became one in supporting her. They hail her for having been flawlessly showing confidence and grace in her performance in MU. Miss Garrett surely marked something in our hearts. I realize that, in the end, size does not matter. It does not measure one’s beauty or wit. It is our choices that makes us all different from one another. It is our views that makes us dig our own pathway. Our hands were weavers of our history and legacy. In our decisions depends what we will do and have as a path. If we choose to hide from the world, let ourselves be drowned in diffidence and self-doubt, we will end up wasting the brighter that is ahead of us that we are yet to discover.

Miss Garrett open the window for the women to see that our life is

THE UNFIT IS FITTING

like a wheel. It goes on and on. It never stops. If we try to stop it, we will fail. It is better to stop it. We have to stop what has been the norm. Set ourselves in new ideas and views. Stay out of sticking to the old sayings and beliefs. We have to try breaking the wheel and not just kept on going with it. Let us not settle for less. We are women, born with beauty. Parade our pride all over the world. Cherish the gift we have. Embrace the differences. Never let your dreams be woven by an empty hand.

Spreading false rumors; resulting to alertness of people

Alert your ears to hear what you fear. Do not let it get you near.

Our world is full of people who wears a façade mask. A world that is black and white. People can be pleasing and rude. Now a days, legitimacy of an information has been an issue. We no longer believe immediately with information whispered in our ears. False information is unavoidable but many people enjoy spreading it. It is like a rotten fruit you suddenly find in a healthy tree. It does not fit in but it did, somehow. It wears a mask to hide its own agenda.

In our school, LNCHS does not have a protection against the spreading of false information. Today, we have these people who are like spiders hiding in small spaces that able them to hear and learn things. One misinformation can echo into mistake. As the old saying says that gossip has wings. It true indeed. In a blink of an eye, you might find yourself in some issues that you do not even know. Well, life is full of surprises.

Disturbing, yet, one rumor says that a teacher is having a romantic relationship with one of LNCHS’s student. It has long been a taboo for a teacher to be roman-

tically involved with his or her student. There has been a rule about it and a law against such act. It is a rumor disgustingly spread. A rumor that was clearly a false one. It is alerting how such rumor spread. And with that, someone can suffer deeply because of false news.

Since ancient time, words of mouth is really a big problem the society have. Scholars usually debates of what happened because of information’s being altered. It is a challenge identifying what is right and wrong with our history. So it was easy to say that fake news is expected to spread violently. If our history can be

altered, what about the simple everyday news we hear and discover?

A healthy tree should stay healthy. If we can shield it from rotten, then let us start now. A false information is like a virus. It scares us and it can spread rapidly if we will not be cautious. Let us know facts to avoid misunderstanding. After all, a virus cannot spread if we will be just careful. Do not let the fire spread and make wildfire. Extinguish it to avoid chaos and destruction in one’s life.

REPRESENTATION INCLUSIVE

If there is “Mr. And Ms. Intramurals”, should there be other pageants for our other friends who identify themselves as neither a man nor woman?

A great opportunity was given by the LNCHS after launching the “LNCHS Queen” as one of the events for the INTRAMURALS 2023. It is a beauty pageant that showcases the talents of those students who are part of the LGBTQ community.

LNCHS Queen is just like a typical beauty pageant. The candidates were given a chance to express their intelligence through the Q&A portion of the contest. Proving their hidden wits. Of course, what is a beauty pageant without the elaborate and grand gowns the contest wear! The contestants awed the audience with their splendid

gowns as they walk with confidence like they own the stage.

Like a tree growing, LNCHS had given a great part in honing their students and with this event, they just proved how open-minded they can be when it comes to these matters. It is proof that they welcome them with open arms. That the LGBTQ community members should not hide behind shadows.

That they are free to express their true self within the school ground.

The event became a platform for the LGBTQ community members to shoved away

Breaking Barriers, Redefining Standards

Face power plus lip tint or a full blast make-up were worn by students from the different grade levels in High School. It is no secret that discrimination and bullying were a bitter popular trend to those who wear makeup. Judge by those who wore a “natural” beauty, no makeup can cover the harsh truth brought by those hurtful words. A torment that forever bruised the hearts of those who cannot save themselves from this cruelty.

Self-Confidence. The first reason why a lady buys make up brands. A thing they always lack and wish they could have.

Lipstick, to cover their white like sunny cloud lips.

It can color the lips of the ladies that were exhausted from the whole day of school work and activities. It can also be used to patch the dark days of students.

Concealer to hide the dark, eye bugs trying to take a peak in the student’s eyes. Results of them lighting their midnight candles to finish the assignments and projects while trying to fulfill their responsibilities in their household. It helps hide the suffering they endure to have high marks and pass the quarter.

Mascara to secrete your burned-out eyes from reading all the learning materials when the teacher’s explanation did not process in your brain anymore.

Powder to take care of the oily face from the scorching sun, added by the boiled anger of the teachers. This will always be found in the bags of your classmates.

These are just some of the products every girl students used to conceal the insecurities they have. However, wearing these products became a subject of discrimination from others. They are like weeds trying hard to evade the blooming of a rose. In their view, they thought wearing these were just some exaggeration and desperation to quench their thirst for men to be attracted to them. That they use insecurities as an excuse when they only want validation from men. But no matter how much make up they wear, their reasons were valid.

Wearing a makeup gives confidence to the ladies. It is not an invitation for bullying to occur. Make-ups’ were like a magic dust we, ladies, put in our faces. It serves as our identification as a woman. We represent our gender through wearing it. After all, beauty cannot be measured how natural our face looks. Instead, it is measured by how pure our hearts were and how we respect others. In the end, it is our heart and virtue that radiates true beauty.

the prejudice and misconception everyone thought of when thinking of their community. That they are not just for entertainment and fun but can also be on the floor of wits and logic.

All of us have fortes. We were shaped differently by time and life. Our different talents and abilities were the reason why we are all unique from one another. Nonetheless, we should not forget that no matter how different we are from each other, maybe in our beliefs and gender, all we lack of was a platform where we can express our unsaid thoughts. A platform we can all rely on, a

platform that we know our little voices can be heard.

The floor they made was a window for a bright future. Being exclusive with this matter became a vital opportunity for everyone to know that they can always find a home in our institution. A home they can never be afraid of showing their real self. A home where they can find clean, white, pillows and blankets, sheltering them from this cruel world full of judgment.

BANANA: A PUPIL’S POWER SNACK

The key question is how a banana, one of nature’s greatest

be

students to use, and it can benefit them in a variety of ways as they strive to be the best they can be.

The banana plant is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form trunk-like pseudo stems. Moreover, It offers vitamin B6, which is beneficial since it enhances metabolism and is required for the body’s appropriate use of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. High homocysteine levels have been linked to dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and cognitive decline, according to Poonam Sachdev, a pediatrician and medical specialist. A banana is always there to save students who are searching for their last remaining brain cells at the last minute because vitamin B6 helps the body manage levels of homocysteine in the blood, which means that it helps the brain work properly.

Furthermore, Because of its high dietary fiber content and resistant starch content,

it may help you feel fuller and eat fewer and smaller meals. This is according to medical expert Kim Rose-Francis. Pectin, a dietary fiber included in both ripe and unripe bananas, has been shown in studies to have the potential to ease constipation and soften stools. A vital tool for teenagers who, in their rush to achieve academic brilliance, neglect to drink enough water. This is the key to students’ continued good health and fitness.

On a note, Statistics show that there are 15 people who work for TADECO at LNCHS as of 2023. They provide the students with delicious bananas because many people are unaware of the benefits of bananas, which go beyond just their nutritional value and can have a positive impact on a student’s life at

LNCHS.

However, while banana may be healthy, there are negative effects if consumed excessively it will result in migraine, tooth decay, and an increased risk of nerve damage. They may also cause gas or bloating in moderate cases and trigger an anaphylactic shock in severe cases. Due to excess of vitamin intake these are the negative effects of it.

On top of that, excessive intake of bananas may cause weight gain, and people who are allergic to latex may also be allergic to bananas, due to its high sugar it also causes diabetes. These are all because banana contains lots of sugar and carbohydrate content and so it may result in these effects.

As of now we cannot immediately have a healthy lifestyle but what we can do right now is eat a healthy diet, stop eating junk foods, always stay hydrated and eat more fruits like banana to avoid diseases that can stop you from moving forward.

Our own powerhouse is at our disposal. We need to strive to be healthier and mind how much we intake to save ourselves from driving into impending madness. If we do not take action, we will all experience the harsh effects of being unhealthy and eventually we will experience the void, or death.

ike being a sardine stuck in a small can together with others, the space is too tight and the environment was so hot. Later you find yourself feeling uncomfortable and uneasy, you try to cope with it but it is not like what you think.

As the school year 2023-2024 almost started, many students enrolled in Lupon National Comprehensive High School, resulting to increase it’s population. A teacher from the said school mentioned that they are almost 60 students per classroom and it really became a big problem not just for the school but especially for the teachers. This problem was discussed and solved by both of teachers and parents in the first homeroom meeting last

On top of that, according to an article by Ablison Company, one main advantage of electric fans are their energy efficiency. Energy effiecieny plays a crucial role in determining the overall performance of the fans and its impact on electricity bills. Validating that fans were one of the best solution to lessen the heat inside the classrooms that are over populated.

Moreover, “to make electric fans even more appealing, they’re also quite affordable

and can easily fit within your budget,” added by the Ablison Company. An affordable appliance that will not only help the students but the teachers also.

Nevertheless, “one major drawback of electric fans is their limited cooling capacity, as they’re only able to provide a small amount of air circulation,” avowed by the Ablison Company. Its cooling capability have limitations but it does not affect its effectiveness of

electric fans to overcrowded rooms.

Despite of how hard it is, the teachers were still seeking for another solution, to provide the best education they can give. Adding more electric fans were an out of nowhere decision but it now helps a lot. Students only need to be responsible and take good care of the appliances to make it stay in good condition.

In a cold morning when you are doing nothing, just laying down and scrolling through your phone, a sudden electric power interruption occurs. After a few moments when the power is back, you noticed that your appliances were not working and you tried to fix it but you were unsuccessful, but you think again.

Starting from the month of October, electric power interruption occurs simultaneously in the Municipality of Lupon. The teachers of Lupon National Comprehensive High School pinned safety circuit breakers in their respective classrooms to avoid possible fire cases.

Over and above that, Cathy Habas specified in an article that, circuit breakers are a contraption with an external switch and either a metal strip or a magnet inside, circuit breakers have a top and a bottom so that electricity flows through them correctly. Proving that circuit breaker has something different and the best problem solver to avoid disastrous

scenarios.

By the same token, “When too much current runs through a circuit breaker, either the metal strip bends and flips the switch, or the magnet becomes strong enough to pull a metal lever that flips the switch,” Habas added. A helpful equipment that thinks of your safety and finances, like mankind, it changes for the better when everything feels wrong.

Nevertheless, Habas stated that circuit breakers are more complicated pieces of equipment, they have a higher cost of installation and repair. In these days, high quality product

asks high cost of money, confirming that circuit breaker fits in with the equipment people can rely to.

Despite of the various threats that sudden electric power interruptions can bring to humanity. If people will be knowledgeable enough and buy safety circuit breakers. Grounds, malfunctions, and even explosions in your appliances can be prevented. So, help in developing a better society and decrease the risk of casualties, be responsible and buy circuit breakers.

LUNG BUSTERS

Since smoking can have such negative repercussions, students give up the habit

On a Monday morning, a student is walking down the aisle, and notices another student smoking, he passes by and wonders about the reason he is smoking. It may be due to family problems or influenced by peers, but the main question is what are the effects of smoking? Is it just a waste of money? Smoking doesn’t make a person look cool, it makes them look like a fool.

On a Monday morning, a student is walking down the aisle, and notices another student smoking, he passes by and wonders about the reason he is smoking. It feels like you are going outside to breathe in some fresh air but you are disappointed as you unfortunately smell the reeks of cigarettes. It may be due to family problems or influence by peers. Smoking doesn’t make a person

look cool, it makes them look like a fool. The real danger is the addiction.

Smoking is the act of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning plant material, it contains nicotine which makes smoking addictive. Smoking can lead to cancer and subsequently prevent your body from combating it. Tobacco smoke contains toxins that can alter or harm a cell’s DNA. The “in-

Furthermore, Smoking also harms the cardiovascular system, The chemicals in cigarette smoke trigger blood vessel lining cells to grow enlarged and irritated. This may cause blood vessel narrowing and a number of cardiovascular diseases. Atherosclerosis is a condition where blood clots in the artery walls due to the accumulation of fat, cholesterol, and other chemicals. This causes the arteries to narrow and lose their flexibility. When plaque accumulates inside the arteries, the lumen narrows and blood flow to different parts of the body is disrupted. Smoking causes more plaque to build up in blood vessels.

On another note, smoking causes chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which includes chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is long-term inflammation of the bronchi. It is the blocking of airways in the lungs making it harder to breathe, on a long term it will eventually result to death.

On top of that, as of 2023 there are 2 confirmed smokers in LNCHS, despite them knowing the dangerous effects of smoking, yet they still do it. This is because the lungs are an easy way for nicotine and other chemicals in tobacco smoke to enter the bloodstream. Nicotine swiftly permeates the body from that point on. Nicotine produces pleasurable feelings and diverts the

he salt air from the beach lingered in the hot summer morning. However, you found the palm of your hand covered with sand so you walk straight to a faucet to wash it. However, you were shocked when you see that the water is not clear and has black spots, you thought you were just dizzy and shook your head but you are not.

As the 2023 is coming to an end, many trials and hardships were experienced by the Luponians on the way especially when it comes to water. Water or an inorganic compound with the chemical formula H2O is the most important necessities in our daily living, it can be used in just washing hands, taking a bath, cooking meals, and even drinking it for hydration. Proving that water is the most important molecule for humanity because of its many uses.

Over and above that, Anne Marie Helmenstine avowed in an article that water is the main compound found in living organisms with approximately 62 percent of the human body. Just like how boats needed water to set sail, humans needed water to survive also.

Moreover, “About 71 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. Breaking it down, 96.5 percent of the water in the Earth’s crust is found in oceans, 1.7 percent in ice caps and glaciers, 1.7 percent in groundwater, a small fraction in rivers and lakes, and 0.001 percent in clouds, water vapor, and precipitation,” added by Helmenstine. Water is not just important in terms of its usage but of its entirety, it completes more than 50% of Earth as a whole.

However, waters can get polluted when it is contaminated by chemicals or microorganisms. “If a water source becomes contaminated due to pollution, it can lead to health issues in humans, such as cancer or cardiovascular conditions,” specified by Anna Smith Haghighi in an article. Proving that waters can be dangerous more than any weapons when it is abused.

On top of that, there are many causes of water pollution but the most common reasons behind it are caused by humans. Domestic sewage is one of the causes and the primary source of pathogens (disease-causing microorganisms) and putrescible organic substances, stated by Jerry Nathanson in an article. Proving that filthy humans were the reasons why our fresh crystal clear waters are contaminated with deadly microorganisms.

Nevertheless, parents keeps reminding their child to be safe and be observant all the time, They kept on feeding informations to keep their children safe especially with the contaminated waters that we are seeing nowadays. They played a vital role in preventing the increasing cases of water contaminated caused diseases.

user’s attention from unpleasant feelings when used in moderation. The tobacco user becomes more motivated to use.

Second hand smoke is more dangerous than smoking, even for brief periods of time, nonsmokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke may experience negative health consequences. Secondhand smoke exposure can result in lung cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke, and other illnesses in persons who do not smoke. Additionally, it may cause an early death.

As of now we are unfortunately unable to immediately stop the effects of smoking. But WHO has suggested ways on how we can gradually reduce smoking but make it a point to quit fully in a specified time duration. Engaging mind in higher activities like meditation, yoga and services help a lot to quit smoking. Also drink cow’s milk in night before sleep. Call for reinforcement, engage in recreation activities, resist the temptation, the mind is the master of the body.

Lung busters, the slowly but deadly killers. We need to stop this madness and prevent people from smoking these disastrous substances otherwise everyone will experience the short term and long-term effects. If we do not take action, we will all eventually suffer and live through the madness and eventually experience the void.

“Depression is really hard to deal with especially for students, it affects your mental issues, emotional status, and physical health,”

ou were so happy in school, talking and chilling with your friends. However, when you’re all alone and on your way home, your heart beats faster and everything feels heavy. You tried to cope with your emotions and smile, but you cannot.

As the face to face classes were back again. Most students were not the same after pandemic. The happiness in their hearts and the smiles on their faces were cannot be seen anymore. Most students said that they are facing depression on the way and encountered so many hardships as they continue in life.In Lupon National Comprehensive High School, 2 out of 10 students were facing depression. “Depression is really hard to deal with especially for students, it affects your mental issues, emotional status, and physical health,” stated by a student in an interview. Some students said they can’t eat well and cannot sleep staying awake all night till dawn.

Over and above that, “Depression (also known as major depression, major depressive disorder, or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how a person feels, thinks, and handles daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working,” testified by the National Institute of Mental Health in their published article. Depression is not easy to deal with, like a boat with no sail going out in a raging sea of storms, its so hard to get going in the right direction.

On top of that, according to an interview, most of the students got depressed because of

family problems. In an article by Taylor Bennett, she avowed that family problems — like major changes in family dynamics, financial instability, and sibling bullying — can have a significant impact on children, these challenges can put stress on a child’s emotions and contribute to loss of focus or acting out at school. Family should be the one students ran back to when they are lost, but now, family is the number one reason why students are lost, and not yet found.

However, depression can be cured if parents will maintain an open communication lines with their children and offer them con-

tinuous love and support, added by Bennett. Instead of ruminating over problems, parents should be the one acknowledging their child’s hard work and efforts then focus on providing what their child needed.

Despite of how problematic life is, as a student whose facing depression, you should keep the battle on, you should keep your stand and fight for the dreams you wished to obtain in the future. Do not underestimate your skills because no one is supporting you, you have something in you. Do not downgrade yourself because no one is celebrating for you, you are worthy to live and not just to survive.

Teachers and Students Participated in Tree Planting Activity

he cold breeze lingered in one fine December morning as you go out for hiking. However, as you continued walking, you found yourself sweating and your shirt soaking wet and you thought you were missing out the essence of Christmas. You looked around and find a shadow to shelter but you did not find anything.

As December came, the cold breeze of air and heavy rainfalls were experienced in Davao Oriental. The essence of Christmas is unstoppable and it cannot stop students as well as teachers to get so excited. However, DepEd thought that schools were missing something, and they found out.

On top of that, public schools were missing out trees. It is because of the new infrastructures that are established per schools. In Lupon National Comprehensive High School, trees went missing because of the established senior high school buildings. With trees missing, the true essence of Christmas became invisible as well.

However, the Department of Education will not let that slide. They will not let the students to not feel the true essence of Christmas, they will not let the students forget where did they started. They will not let the students spend their vacations without any learning to bring in their respective homes.

Over and above that, “along with the public schools and field offices nationwide, the Department of Education (DepEd) led the simultaneous conduct of DepEd’s 236,000 Trees – A Christmas Gift for the Children,” according to an article published by the Department of Education. Working through everyone’s differences and connecting gaps by one magnificent gift to the

Junk foods are types of foods that are low in nutrients and high in calories these are the type of foods that are high in sugar and hence bad for health. School follows food memorandum from DepEd which is DepED order 17, and bans all sorts of junk foods in school. DepEd aims to promote healthy eating habits among students through making healthy and affordable menu choices, they categorized the food that should be allowed in schools and not allowed in schools.

Moreover, green category contains all of the healthy and nutritious food items that are low in fat, sugar, and salt, and that are beneficial to the students physically and mentally. These food items are always available

in school canteen. They can be eggs, fresh fruits, vegetables, etc. Since students are at the growing stage, they need healthy food and plenty of nutrition, stronger bones, stronger immunity to grow to their full potential.

Furthermore, yellow category contains food that have a little of fat, sugar, and sugar. The food items in this category are allowed to be sold on Tuesday and Thursday only. Students need to have flexibility in their diet and they can eat the food they want on some days. Students also need to have some fun, always eating the same food can be a danger for health and is also very boring.

On top of that, Red category contains

learners, the trees.

Equally Important, the Department of Education testified that Undersecretary and Chief of Staff Atty. Michael Wesley T. Poa, National Capital Region Director Jocelyn Andaya, and Pasig Representative Roman Romulo led the main program conducted in Pasig Central Elementary School. Trees that signifies the essence of Christmas, but also to bring hope and motivation to students and a lesson that just like trees, they will always start from the ground and go back to the ground as well, to make the students humble and full of respect.

Moreover, last December 5, 2023, teachers as well as students under the science

club of Lupon National Comprehensive High School, participated in the tree planting mission of DepEd. Under the heat of the sun, the smiles on everyone’s faces as they plant the trees in the ground were priceless, definitely the essence of Christmas, love.

Despite of the calamities Philippines are facing, from the earthquakes to typhoons, the Department of Education never forgot to bring the best gift for the learners. Going to their houses with new learnings, new hopes, new memories to cherish, and new trees to go back when classes resumes, an experience that will make the students Christmas a merry one.

It’s 9:30 in the morning, students are already worn out. As the students walk to the canteen, they noticed that the food items they wanted were not there. They frowned as they wandered around aimlessly. The same can be felt like when you are searching for something that you really wanted to have but it was sold out or not available. The danger is junk food.

food that have very little nutrients or no vitamins and minerals but are high on fats, sugar, and salt. These foods are not permitted to be served in school canteens. Giving these kinds of foods to developing students is not advised because they may be harmful to their health, it will stunt their growth and they might develop diseases and sickness. These food items are hamburgers, sugar-sweetened beverages, energy drinks, chocolates, candies, French fries, deep-fried food or in general junk foods. Additionally, junk foods has a great impact that affects the education sector. It causes osteoporosis which is deadly to students who are still growing. A lifelong lack of calcium plays a role in the development of

osteoporosis. Low calcium intake contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures. Eating disorders. Severely restricting food intake and being underweight weakens bone in both men and women.

As of now we are unable to immediately stop it’s effects, Nevertheless there is a saying that states “prevention is better than cure”. However, WHO has suggested ways on how we can prevent these deadly long term diseases and head off the negative effects by eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated, eating at the right time, and having a healthy lifestyle.

PADDLE POWER : PERSIST, PREVAIL AND ACE THE COURT

Being an athlete taught me a lot of things; it taught me about good sportsmanship, how to accept losing and how to appreciate winning.

At just 16, Mariela Jhoyce Retiza is making waves in table tennis, fueled by passion, and perseverance that belies her age.

In the bustling world of sportswhere the echo of paddles speaks volume, a story of grit, determination, and undeniable talent can be witnessed. At just 16 years old, Mariela Jhoyce M. Retiza, a student at Lupon National Comprehensive High School, has already left a mark in the field of table tennis.

Mariela’s introduction in the world of table tennis is not a mere coincidence; it was fate. Her journey from a 10-year-old beginner to a Palarong Pambansa qualifier is nothing short of inspiring. Mariela’s journey into the world of table tennis began at a very young age, during her 4th-grade year - steered by her tito, who was also a coach and a palarong pambansa qualifier. “The one who inspired me to play table tennis was my tito Edwin” she stated. “He’s the one who influenced me in joining our club in school.” Mariela added. Yet, for Mariela it was not only her tito that inspired her. She was also influenced by a fellow player - Jonalyn.

“Yes, si Jonalyn, because first year pa lang of playing table tennis, na qualify dayun siya sa Palaro” Mariela said. She also emphasized that Jonalyn became her inspiration to keep striving

to pursue her dreams in sports.

But, talent alone doesn’t forge champions; it should be backed by rigorous training coupled with a disciplined mind. Training, for Mariela, is a holistic endeavor. “Training of course, lots of training, usually me and my teammates train together, we do drills to train not only our body but also our mentality.” She also highlighted that they train not only to improve their stamina and for physical conditioning, but also to improve their mind fortitude as well as their tactical acumen.

However, no journey is devoid of challenges. For Mariela - it was when she was defeated by Jonalyn. Her defeat against Jonalyn was a bitter pill to swallow. “I don’t really like losing because I dont want to be a failure. During my first game, napildi ko which is si Jonalyn nakapildi sa ako, na discourage ko magdula after ato.” Yet, rather than succumbing to despair, Mariela unearthed an invaluable epiphany; she viewed it as a test for her, a stepping stone, and a catalyst for growth. “But then I realized na there’s nothing wrong in losing, rather it’s

what makes an athlete strong and it pushes you to work harder and improve yourself in upcoming tournaments or competition in the future.”

“I would often tell myself it’s okay, bawi nalang ta next dula and training pa ta aron mas mukusog ta. I avoid saying “sayang” or anything negative things about my loss kay if i-tolerate nako ang ingon ana na behavior towards myself dili ko mu-improve as an athlete. That’s why I avoid anything that would make me feel bad about losing.” Mariela added.

Beyond all the nail-bitting matches, the medals, the glitz and glamour, the victories, and defeats - Mariela’s odyssey goes beyond the corners of the court, offering invaluable life lessons. “Being an athlete taught me a lot of things; it taught me about good sportsmanship, how to accept losing and how to appreciate winning.” She also emphasized that being an athlete taught her discipline. “It taught me how to manage my time and how to my prioritize tasks. It taught me life lessons, and most importantly, it taught me to love sport.”

Whven asked for advice to other aspiring athletes Mariela offers a response, honed through her personal experience. “If ever man mapildi mo sa game, ayaw ka discourage instead make it your anchor to do better next time ayaw ingon na “ay napildi man ko, dili nako mudula” instead say “bawi ko next time” or “I’ll train harder and do better next game”. Mariela also highlighted that defeats are part of the journey—both in sports and in life, and that they should embrace and learn from them, and always look for the silver lining.

From a little girl - a 10 years old aspirant to a table tennis pantheon - Mariela’s journey is a mosaic of dreams fervently pursued, challenges stoically surmounted and a story of passion, and dedication. Guided by mentors and fueled by indomitable spirit; one thing becomes abundantly clear: her journey is far from over. With each passing day, Mariela’s trajectory is poised to reach new and greater heights, emphasizing the timeless adage that when passion meets perseverance and talent aligns with hard work, the sky is not the limit— it’s just the beginning.

RUNNING Against UNCERTAINTY

Phoebe Yder Magadan is a 23 year old athlete who has etched her name in the field of athletics. Phoebe stumbled into athletics during her Grade 5, motivated initially just by the promise of extra points by their MAPEH Teacher. So, in her school uniform with a skirt and black shoes, she discovered an innate talent for running.

“I don’t even understand the rules of the sport of running” she stated highlighting that the rules of the sport were unknown to her, and yet she managed to clinch the first place for both the 100 and 200 meters dash, making her the representative of Lupon West District for District Meet.

As she advanced through district, unit, and provincial meet, she faced challenges, often competing against older opponents. De-

feats shook her confidence, “I can’t even win in lower meets like Unit Meet.” However, despite those setbacks, Phoebe’s determination and love for the sport shone through. She continued to play throughout High School, participating in Batang Pinoy and DAVRAA.

PADDLING TO GLORY

REACHING DREAMS ACROSS THE TABLE

Reccabeaben Sercidillo

Meet Jehum G. Avila, an 18-year-old table tennis player from Lupon National Comprehensive High School whose journey into the sport began back in grade 5, year 2017

Qualifying for Palarong Pambansa and clinching two silver medals on the year 2018 marked a significant milestone in Jehum’s sports career, and his passion for table tennis has only grown since.

Picture a young Jehum, thrust into the world of table tennis by none other than his Kuya. “The first person who influenced me to pursue table tennis was my kuya, since he’s the one who taught me.” He said.

In the beginning, Jehum’s goal was simple – to win a match. Yet, it gradually evolved into a love affair with a sport that would become his sanctuary.

“I was taught by my Kuya, and my goal was to win a match. But as time goes by I learned to like the sport and continue improving my skills.”

Jehum’s journey was no walk in the park, it was a rollercoaster with its highs

and lows, but for Jehum, it was always a fight against himself, a relentless pursuit of self-improvement.

“My journey was not that easy. There were many ups and downs, wins and losses but at the end of the day, it will always be me against myself. Thus, I always focus on self-improvement.” Jehum stated.

Behind every successful athlete, there’s a support system - family, the unseen squad in every victory and defeat, plays the leading role in Jehum’s story.

“Especially my mama and papa. They have been the most supportive parents an athlete could ever have. They played a big part in developing my skills. I was able to a ttend all my trainings and games because of them.”

Before the adrenaline-fueled clash of paddles, Jehum engages in a prelude of prayer. The rituals of physical warm-

ups take a back seat to the spiritual crescendo that precedes the game. “First and the most consistent routine I do in every game is to pray. I do routines like stretching and warm ups before the game but praying comes first.” He said.

Like any other, Jehum also faced the greatest foes of any athlete - challenges, akin to tempests; dot his expedition, with the pressure of competition standing as the mightiest squall.

“There are a lot of challenges I encountered. Aside from the challenges in trainings, the toughest challenge I had to overcome in every game is pressure.”

In the face of defeat, Jehum doesn’t grapple alone; he seeks refuge in prayer. “I don’t handle it. I pray for it.” He also emphasized that it is difficult to overcome it alone.

As he continues to carve his path,

dreaming beyond the bounds of the table, as he sets his sights on joining the Philippine team colors, he imparts a simple message to all those with passion for the game; never lose hope and keep on moving forward.

“As an aspiring athlete, you have to work harder and smarter. Never stop learning and never stop improving.” He highlighted.

Jehum G. Avila stands ready, with paddle in hand and dreams in his heart. His victories and the lessons from defeats serve as a rallying cry for those who dare to dream, reminding them that the journey is as significant as the destination.

KICKING towards SUCCESS

uccess should be measured not just by physical prowess but by the dedication and resilience of the athlete. For 19-year-old John Tildon V. Basilisco, these qualities serve as the cornerstones of his success in the sport. S

Tildon was first thrust into the world of taekwondo during his third grade with a simple invitation from a friend to join a training session. Despite initial hesitations, he quickly realized that his passion for the sport surpassed any challenges he faced. Drawing inspiration from his idol like Japoy Lizardo, Tildon found the drive to persevere through the uncertainty.

However, financial constraints and a lack of proper training facilities are common challenges faced by athletes. “Isa sa

problem gyud labaw nag mag compete kog tournaments is financial gyud.” Facing these hurdles, Tildon’s resourcefulness became evident. Whether it’s through solicitation for support or borrowing equipment, he exemplifies the spirit of an athlete committed to his sport.

“Ang kapildihan is part as a player, wala pay player nga waka napildi tanan gyud muagi ug kapildihan.” he stated emphasizing that losses is a key part of his success. Instead of viewing defeat as a setback, he sees it as an essential part of the journey, a factor that contributes to growth and improvement.

Even with numerous competitions under his belt, for the first time since he entered the world of taekwondo, he considers one particular moment as his proudest. It was when he represented his school and province and achieved the only gold medal for Davao Oriental in the 1st Araw ng Davao del Sur Taekwondo Invitational Tournament Palarong Pambansa Continuity Plan on June 26, 2022.

Proud of his accomplishments, Tildon finds true joy not just in winning but in sharing his knowledge with fellow athletes, especially the younger ones. He expressed, “Kanang maka-share kas knowledge nimo as a

Taekwondo player, like mag-share kas nahibal-an nimo sa imong constituents nimo, mga junior.” Tildon also emphasized that seeing their progress gives him a sense of fulfillment.

John Tildon Basilisco’s success in Taekwondo is not solely defined by the medals he has earned but by the dedication and resilience he brings to every training session and competition. Furthermore, as he continues to inspire those around him, Tildon’s success serves as a proof to the power of passion, commitment, and an unyielding spirit in achieving excellence in sports.
