ANDREW BAKER (ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER)
Father. Photographer. Londoner. I was born in Stratford (when Stratford had a hospital) and lived in Leyton until the age of eight when my parents moved out of London. Reluctantly, I went with them, but moved back to Newham in 1999. I have worked as an editorial photographer for nearly 20 years, and if I have to pick a preferred subject it is portraits of people either in the studio or the environment they live or work in. However, my photography has branched out into editorial, sport, press, PR and marketing. There aren’t any words to describe how much I enjoy what I do, but whatever happens to this industry in the future, I know I will always be a photographer.
I was originally sent to photograph just hammer and anvil stock to promote a local blacksmithing course but I couldn’t resist photographing the characters that were the blacksmiths themselves. I nearly crashed the car when I saw this towering spiritual figure waiting in the middle of the road for the traffic lights to change. I had a chat with him and discovered that the 6 1/2 ft smock-wearing Californian was on his way to the British Museum; so in exchange for a lift, I took the opportunity to photograph him in front of the church. During the journey, I gave him an improvised verbal tour of London, then left him on his way. A part of me wishes that I stayed with him and kept on documenting him. After graduating both developed Backwards Burd into a thriving independent printing and publishing business based in East London.
